No Progress in the War on Poverty - And There Never Will Be
For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always - Mark 14:7
So the War on Poverty has been on-going for 47 years and after untold billions spent the net effect has been...nada, zip, nothing:
"[S]ince President Obama took office [in January 2009], federal welfare spending has increased by 41 percent, more than $193 billion per year," the study says.
Federal welfare spending in fiscal year 2011 totaled $668 billion, spread out over 126 programs, while the poverty rate that remains high at 15.1 percent, roughly where it was in 1965, when President Johnson declared a federal War on Poverty.
Now if you dig down enough, you find that the federal poverty levels were basically set in 1962 as 3 times the Department of Agriculture's economy food plan for families of three or more people and have been adjusted for inflation every year since then. Which is not a terrible way of measuring poverty but also ignores the fact that the cost of food in constant dollars has actually gone down since 1962.
But the biggest reason that the poverty rate has remained unchanged is because it only measures income - not actual poverty:
The official poverty measure counts only monetary income. It considers antipoverty programs such as food stamps, housing assistance, the Earned Income Tax Credit, Medicaid and school lunches, among others, "in-kind benefits" - and hence not income. So, despite everything these programs do to relieve poverty, they aren't counted as income when Washington measures the poverty rate.
So basically the federal poverty rate reflects the number of people who are poor before they receive any charity or government benefits. And since this effect is more or less baked into the statistical cake, you can bet that the official US poverty rate circa 2050 will be around 15%.
Let the preemptive hand-wringing commence.
Feeling Down and Demoralized after The ObamaCare Decision?
Then let Dick Butkus cheer you up:
Tom Elia, who blogs at The New Editor, watches this video reel regularly to get himself in the right frame of mind for the political fight facing us
Well Butkus was a bit before my time so I only know his playing through highlight reels. But yeah after watching this I am feeling better.
With their own equipment budget and few bureaucratic restrictions special forces can buy pretty much whatever they can afford. And their choices often help determine what regular forces go with.
Special Operations pioneered the use of fused imaging systems that combine a thermal camera with night-vision light intensification in a package light enough to fit on a helmet. The monocular combines imagery from an infrared heat sensor with traditional image intensification to create an enhanced fused image with an infrared highlight. The combination enables the operator to pick up heat signatures in the distance that may be hidden behind bushes or vehicles. ...Finally, the i-Aware Fusion also allows the wearer to transmit and receive real-time color video and other battlefield information. This means that the operator could see the feed from an overhead UAV, or share imagery with other users or beam it back to a command post.
Plus the British have their spec op jeep:
Just add a bar and semi-gullible friends.
Is There a Formula For Hit Songs?
Well after analyzing over 1300 popular songs there is a formula for which chords work well together in progressions. Probably not a big surprise to anyone who's studied music theory but it is interesting to see it quantified.
Here are the most popular keys:
and the most popular chords when transposed to C - the I IV V and relative minors pretty much dominate:
June 12, 1897: The Swiss Army Gets Its Knife
[Karl Elsener], a Swiss manufacturer of surgical instruments and cutlery, was a very fashionable man indeed. So he was less than thrilled to learn that the Swiss army was importing Solingen blades from neighboring Germany. Elsener set out to develop a homegrown multifunctional tool worthy of being carried by his local Alpine troops. His prototype of what became known as the Swiss army knife appeared in 1891. The original - made with a wooden handle - included a blade, a screwdriver and a can opener. But Elsener was not happy with it and tinkered endlessly, adding a second blade using a revolutionary spring mechanism, and strengthening the housing.
The addition of a second blade necessitated extra space for the spring, which also opened up more room for other tools.
More than 34,000 Swiss army knives are manufactured every day, and small wonder. This remarkably versatile tool is standard equipment for everyone from Boy Scouts to building contractors to mountaineers. It is even carried into space aboard the space shuttle.
Oh, and every recruit in the Swiss army still receives a knife upon entering the service. Victorinox supplies the army with about 50,000 knives each year.
I carry the 4 GB version of this one daily and it's been very handy since you never know when you'll need a laser, flash drive, pen, scissors or a knife or all of them at once.
Apparently it's fairly common in Russia to have a constantly recording dash-cam in your car for legal reasons which leads to recordings like this.

It was actually pretty funny. Maybe a few too many 80s pop culture references, some of which were hammered into our heads a bit much. Nice extended cameo scenes from that "New York Jets" guy, though.

Will they run you an extension-cord for the fridge?
We were without power for 5 days after the ice-storm here in the NW, and ran the gas-generator for several hours during the day to run the fridge/well.
Our friends have an automatic propane generator that ran 24/7, so they had everything the whole time power was out.
It cost them a fortune! Propane was $3+/gal at the time.

Also, probably not as bad as I made it sound, but I am on a roll. I'm considering putting on one of those sandwich boards and marching around the Capitol building here in WI. A sign concerning the malfeasance of the JEF and his fat wife, and I will throw in the teachers' union just for fun. The private sector is going down in flames and we are still listening to the whiny idiots who just cost this state some $12M on a waste-of-time recall that did exactly nothing except smack them down.
So, yeah, I'm still cranky even though we won, because we are still dealing with the drummers and losers moping around town. Guess I should consider myself lucky they aren't actively seeking jobs, since I am.
So now, I'm going back to school in the fall to see if I can do something more employable. Went to sign up and everyone there is between 18 and 22--I'm a fossil. Oh well. I'm kind of looking forward to the phlebotomy class, so I can stick it to someone the way this economy has stuck it to me.

In the meantime, I'm an evil, evil taxpayer, and I don't have 1) a smartphone, 2) a Kindle, 3) an MP3 player, or 4) numerous exotic tattoos and piercings. Instead, I pay my bills, and there's no money left over for luxuries. And yet, apparently I'm a bad person for wanting the poor to be drug tested in order to receive benefits, because they're suffering so much in their poverty, it's no wonder they turn to drugs.
Pisses me off. Most of "the poor" people I've seen out and about have nicer shit than I do.

Best thing that ever happened to the residents of the former northern portion of Mexico was the war with the US. Another go around could improve things again. Push the border south few hundred miles, make it a territory with an option for statehood in a few decades if there is sufficient assimilation. Anyone who doesn't like it gets a free trip to the capital of their choice in South America.
Keep going until we take back the Panama Canal. That little narrow strip would be a lot easier to have as a border.

I guess we will get by. We always do. But it sure would be nice to have an economy that favored us for once. We really are the first generation to do worse than our parents, so I guess the war on poverty did accomplish something. It put us so far in debt that we all get to experience the joy of being broke.
So far, I haven't had to miss a meal, but I can see that time coming. We haven't paid the mortgage for three months so it is getting to be reckoning time on that as well. Maybe once we lose the house we will qualify for some of that govt money. Who knows? I hate this, but I'm also sure I'm in His hands. I refuse to lose hope.

Do they actually go to the places they're named for? I've been baffled most of my life by the San Diego (405) Freeway that ends well short of San Diego.
At least the Ventura Freeway actually takes you through Ventura County and Ventura itself.

I have a lib sister-in-law that used to love her some SCOAMF. Seems like the bloom is off the rose now, though.
She works for a subsidiary of GE and her job, along with that of 500 co-workers just got moved to India. Now the sister-in-law hates Jeffrey Immelt and just can't believe that her god-king Obama would take advice from Immelt.
Mrs Cop just told her that Obama hates America and she really didn't understand why her sister was surprised since anybody that paid attention knew what Obama actually stood for. I don't think the s-i-l will vote for Romney but she's probably going to stay home in November

eman, I was an architect. My husband is, too, but when push came to shove, he stayed employed and I went out the door. NOT the same firm, just the same crappy economy. Finally got an offer today that was decent - now if the realtor and my soon to be ex-wife don't screw up the process, I should be out of the house and into something else by the middle of August...

So we decided to have a barbecue tonight and "smoke" a little chicken and veggies. We simply take trimmings of appropriate plants and cover the part of the grill where we're not cooking. But one of the plants I used was a sage that had rooted in, grew, and now was dying back 'cause the taproot was gone (the other main one is a rosemary that's going to have the same problem shortly). First thing I notice is that the little "puff-puff-puff" I'm supposed to be getting is looking more like "3-alarm fire in residential neighborhood"....and some smoke is even blowing into the house. So I open it up to take a peek and the little bastard flash-fired. Bad behavior!!!
So if I seem a little scorched tonight....or if you think it smells a bit smoky downwind from me -- well, that's why.

But yes the ladies used to get the deluxe treatment as far as lounging facilities in a restroom.
Every factory I ever worked for had sofas, cots and other accoutrements that were missing from the men's.
Of course THEY see limited access compared to men's because we can pee into a device on the wall which takes up less space. Whereas the ladies usually squat and that takes more room.
Sorry ladies the lack of facilities compared to men's is your own fault. If you had just learned how to pee standing up just think of all the aggravation that could have been avoided.

They lost all semblance of honor when they started to bleat about their integrity as being why people should listen to them. If they'd had actual integrity, they wouldn't need to talk about it so much.
Small-town newspapers used to have some doozies. Place I used to live, when a well-known local man showed up at the local hospital to have a still-functioning vibrator removed from a non-recreational section of his lower GI tract, it ran on the top-right corner of page 3 with the headline "The Agony and the Ecstasy".

I told him he should have gone to Barbados instead. Maybe I had a better time in "Bimshire" than he did in Nassau because I passed as a Brit and not an American. Or maybe not. I suspect that in Barbados, the tourists you don't want to look like are Australian - the Australian tourists were the absolute worst I've seen anywhere.

They are correct. The power to tax is not unlimited. They can tax Income DIRECTLY, and it does not have to be capitated, but all other Direct Taxes must still be capitated.
Just as Imposts, Excises, and duty taxes must be uniform throughout the United States.
Problem is that while the individual tax within ObamaCare IS tied to income, the BUSINESS tax of 2K on each person you do not cover, is not. Its a Direct UnCapitated Tax.
Add in the religious exemptions, and the fact that some States will be able to opt out (making them non uniform, and giving some religions an advantage)....
They are correct, Roberts threw out EVERY Limit on Taxs by the Feds.

On our Fiji trip, we were staying at a place in Taveuni for a bit, and halfway through there was this junket for Australian travel agents (so that they could recommend it to their clients [**cough** kickback **cough**]. So, no great surprise they're on the next morning's dive.
We had a lot of fine diving in Fiji, but on this one we saw a banded sea snake. Very cool snake with white and black bands around it -- lives in open water, but doesn't have to worry about much as it slithers through the coral looking for fish....because it's a close relative of the cobra and slings a potent neurotoxin -- potent, as in most people don't make it out of the water, much less back to the dock. And we're about 15-20 feet away, pointing, and trying to give off a "we don't bother you, you don't bother us, everybody's cool" vibe -- and those yahoo Aussies go charging off after the thing and try to get it out of the reef so this guy with a 87-pound camera rig can get a "good shot". Not a "natural shot", mind you, where it'd be doing its business along the reef looking for food -- more like the shot of it, half-angry and half-panicked, bolting away from the harassment towards a pair of Americans frantically going "vibe, vibe, vibe, vibe...."

Posted by: Romeo13 at July 02, 2012 12:21 AM (lZBBB)
This is close to what I've been musing about.
To start with, the States came in and sued to toss Obamacare because the mandate was unconstitutional. So the Court looks at the mandate and is about to say "the mandate's unconstitutional under the Commerce Clause" -- when Roberts gets annoyed at the Dem, WH, media (but I repeat myself) BS, and gets all cute with "well, it could be constitutional as a tax."
SCOTUS wasn't asked about it being capitated, or uniform, or if the regulations (which didn't exist when the States' case was filed) were constitutional, and so they don't say. There is a way for a mandate to be constitutional if it falls within the power to tax. Period.
Now Kennedy, Alito, Thomas, and Scalia are scandalized by this -- they're thinking "cut the crap! We're here to solve problems, not create them." But Roberts cannot be budged. It's personal.
Libs see "a win" and predictably spooge themselves. Everyone gets wound up and prickly. Conservatives vilify Roberts....but.....
[As I recall, one of the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks had a finale where there were three ships caught in a whirlpool, and at the end the English prig finds himself between the other two while they unload holy hell upon him -- essentially turning a ship under sail at one end into splinters at the other, with a line of damage working down the ship.]
.....but, as we come one more turn around the whirlpool, Obamacare starts being blasted apart for its "non-tax" aspects. And that shredding is done at lower levels, by courts and appeals courts -- hundreds of them, all at once.
Mind you, I wouldn't think that what Roberts did in this case was at all proper. It will cause unnecessary grief to citizens, it will confuse people, it will lose precious time. It's like the Coast Guard coming up to a rowboat and saying, "sorry, this isn't general sailing -- you can only qualify to take your boat across here if it's a ferry...and a ferry has to carry a car." Once the CG leaves, it's anyone's guess who'd be the first to drop a car on the guy's dinghy.
And I'm not sure if "tax" is even the right wrinkle. But I'm suspecting that Roberts changed his vote from a "sorry, no" because of Chicago persuasion....and I'm also suspecting that the change was to a lovely golden chalice, containing painful poison.

Cedar-shingled roofs are really only an issue with falling embers. If you have dry weeds up to the house, and a woodpile up against the back door, you're already done before the roof is involved.
Problem is, a fire can be in brush, come up to a house and get some wood, suck that wood into the updraft and drop it as embers far ahead of the fire line, and get the one guy in 20 who has a cedar roof. When that house catches fire, it spreads to his immediate neighbors on the ground again, and burns out the subdivision. Fire probes a myriad of weaknesses, all at once. It's like "herd immunity" with epidemics -- it's not the one particular cause that broke down, it's all the possibilities left open.

On this video, you can skip/fast forward to 5:42 and listen to an almost finished copy of the song. This was from the original studio tape about 1965.
http://snurl.com/245pk8j or Click on my name for the video.
The thing that strikes me about this piece are how complex the arrangements are. About 23 musicians were in the studio which for the time period was unheard of for a rock/pop song. Oh yes, the vocals are simply awesome.

Stopped going to movies a long time ago when people started being not people but out of control children with a entitled to act anyway I want attitude.
Realized that if I kept going to movies, I was going to get killed or seriously injured or I was going to do that to someone else.
I think Star wars IV was the last until the Matrix series. Wasn't patient enough to wait for the dvd of Revolutions. That's IT. I picked and chose the neighborhood and time very very carefully.
Didn't go to LOTR (crap I've READ the series about 6 times).

I could go on about shitty audiences. Man alive, shitty audiences FUCKING SUCK! I have had many a movie ruined by terrible audiences. The most recent one being The Lady In Black (herpes upon that sonovabitch that was behind me).
But I still enjoy seeing a movie on the big screen with big sound with a big audience. If the audience is generally respectful, the film is in focus and the sound is cranked way the hell up, I'm a happy camper.
And I think, with a movie like Batman, seeing it with a nerd audience is the way to go. Fanboys tend to be be better if for any other reason they are there for the movie and aren't just pissing away a couple of hours.

It's like God wanted Aussies and Americans to bond and get along......but they are also the most reckless and oblivious tourists out there -- it's like they're trying their damnedest to overtake the "ugly American" caricature because they're good folk and they thought we previously got the raw end of it. Teasing a neurotoxic reptile out of coral 40 feet below the surface shows a certain, how shall we say.....stupid disregard for consequences? Automatic weapon mandate.
Every American will be mandated to buy an assault weapon of a minimum prescribed caliber for the defense of self and family AND attend annual weapons training. Further, all able bodied citizens without criminal background shall be allowed to conceal carry without the need for a licence. Failure to arm yourself will result in payment of a tax towards funding of new police officers and equipment.
Because, hell, if I have to buy insurance because some other asshole's premiums are going up then that asshole should be made to buy a gun since dead little girls inevitably...I dunno...drive down property values or something.

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'
And if its that fucking raven, it'll be flying looking out his squeak hole after I'm done.
