WTF Is The Deal With People Who are Contrary Conversationalists?
We've all dealt with people like this where every conversation is a variant of this one:
Them: "It's a nice day outside."
You: "Yes, it is."
Them: "Not really. It's kind of crappy outside."
Well Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, has coined a term to describe this behavior:
Here's a new phenomenon I've tentatively identified: oppositional conversational style.
A person with oppositional conversational style is a person who, in conversation, disagrees with and corrects whatever you say. He or she may do this in a friendly way, or a belligerent way, but this person frames remarks in opposition to whatever you venture.
I've always referred to them as quibblers - people who simply will never accept any statement from you - no matter how trivial or obviously correct it is - as true on its face. They must always quibble, argue, or simply contradict what you said.
Needless to say people like this are extremely annoying and by breaking the unspoken 'yes and...' rules of conversation they basically make every interaction with them a chore.
For a long time I assumed they were just being asshole-ish and trying to establish some kind of dominance - and for some that is the case. But later I realized that for many of them it was unintentional behavior and they were clueless and genuinely mystified as to why they always seemed to rub people the wrong way and why casual chats often ended with people storming off.
You tend to see this much more among engineering and technical people where it comes out as compulsive hyper-correction and quibbling - so much so that I'm now convinced that it's actually a very mild form of Asperger's.
In fact I've run into some engineers who were such extreme contrary conversationalists that they would go into what I call 'hostile witness' mode over the simplest questions. Here's an example ripped from the pages of my life:
Me: Hey I think the problems at customer X may be due to flaky hardware so I'd like to automatically run tests on any idle nodes. Do you still have that automated test code you wrote for customer Y?
Co-worker: No. I don't have any automated test code.
Me: Wait - but didn't you write the programs used during their verification tests last year?
Him: Yes.
Me: Well couldn't that work?
Him: No. That was for automatically profiling the performance.
Me: Okay...but wouldn't it also detect if a node wasn't responding or producing errors in its results? That's all I'm looking for.
Him: [long pause] Yes. But it's NOT a test program - it's just for profiling performance.
[a few wasted minutes where we go round and round over whether profiling is a subset of testing or not]
Me: Uh okay anyway...just send me what you have and I'll see if I can use it as a basic test as well.
Him: Why? I told you it's not a test program - it's a profiler.
[At this point in my mind I'm thinking 'Dude we work for the same fucking company - help me to help us!' as well as pondering over how just a short century ago it was perfectly acceptable to beat such people senseless]
It's more than just a delicious food - it's also what helped build the United States of America.
From the 1901 issue of The American Kitchen Magazine:
IMPORTANCE OF BACON"I Have a profound respect for bacon," remarked a thoughtful citizen at a local hotel cafe, spearing one of the savory brown slices that garnished his breakfast eggs. "As a patriotic American, it commands my unbounded esteem and gratitude. Did it ever occur to you that we are indebted primarily to bacon for the opening up and development and civilization of more than one-half of this grand and glorious Republic? That, without bacon, the great West, with its thriving cities, its countless industries, its fertile farms, its magnificent mines, its gigantic web of railroad and telegraph and telephone lines, and all its other wonderful evidences of progress and prosperity - that, without bacon, this superbly flourishing domain would in all probability be a howling wilderness at the present moment?" The thoughtful citizen paused for breath.
"You astonish me," said his friend across the table.
"That is because you have never given the subject any attention," he replied. "Bacon has been the chief agency in the development of our country, for the simple reason that it has been the chief food of the pioneer. It was the only kind of meat that was easily portable and would keep for an indefinite period. Fremont's pathfinders carried it, so did the gold hunters of '49, and so did all that tremendous army of emigrants and frontiersmen who gradually opened up the unknown region between the Mississippi River and the Pacific coast. The prospectors who toiled up and down the continental divide and located the great mineral resources of the country lived principally upon bacon, and to this day it is the main item in the 'grub stake' of every adventurer who goes into the mountains to seek for ore. To sum the matter up, the advance guard of civilization has moved steadily westward, eating bacon and conquering savage nature, and without that humble article of diet the red man and the buffalo would still be prowling over regions where pink teas flourish and culture rules the roost. You must bear in mind, too, that the bacon upon which all these gigantic achievements are based is not the high-priced, delicately flavored breakfast bacon of a first-class cafe. It is sterner stuff. It is the strong, dark, greasy bacon of ordinary commerce, that comes in great, rough slabs and smells like scorched shoe leather. At first sight you would turn away from it in disgust, but as a ration to work on and fight on it has no equal in the world. I grant you that the fancy condensed foods they are putting up for the armies nowadays are vastly prettier to look at, and the chemists say they contain ten times the nutriment to the square inch, but let a company of tired, hungry soldiers go into camp after a forced march or a fierce battle, and I will wager horses to horsehair that they throw away all their tinned gimcracks for one rasher of good old-fashioned bacon, hot from the skillet. I am not especially fond of bacon myself," added the thoughtful citizen, "but I revere it for the illustrious part it plays in history. If I had my own way about it, I would remove the torch from the upraised hand of Bartholdi's magnificent statue of liberty enlightening the world and substitute a colossal rasher of bacon. Then it would be truly symbolic of American progress."
The Time Andy Kaufman Wrestled a Bunch of Women
I vaguely remembered his wrestling a woman on SNL but had no idea that he'd been doing it across the country for several years.
His friend and co-conspirator Bob Zmuda, dressed as a referee, would set up the challenge. Any woman that could pin Andy Kaufman walked away with the cash. Fifteen or twenty ladies would volunteer. Then, to prove that they weren't using a shill, Kaufman would let the audience vote for the best candidate.
"I wanted to recapture the old days of the carnivals," Kaufman said. "Wrestlers used to go from town to town with carnivals, and offer $500 to any man who could last in the ring with them for three minutes. So I figured if I could offer a prize and make it like a contest, it could be very exciting"
Dressed in full-length white thermal underwear, baggy black swim trunks, black socks and black shoes, Kaufman strutted around, claiming he was the World Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion. He goaded the females in the audience, poking fun at women's lib, and saying that women were "meant to be in the kitchen" while "washing the potatoes, scrubbing the carrots, raising the babies."
And woman wrestling was bery bery good to Andy too:
For Kaufman, there was a fringe benefit to the wrestling charade. He was painfully shy, and always had trouble meeting women. But rolling around on a mat for a few minutes with the opposite sex proved to be a very effective way to get dates. According to Bob Zmuda, Kaufman ended up sleeping with some of his wrestling opponents.
Are You Too Old for the Olympics?
Probably unless you're competing in archery, shooting, or sailing.
How an Unemployed Programmer Kept Sneaking Into Apple to Finish the Job
I've heard various versions of this story over the years but this is one of the more complete ones. If you've ever used the graphing calculator that was shipped with Apple computers, you've enjoyed the fruits of Avitzur's 'illegal' work.
Ron Avitzur knew his project was doomed. By the time his bosses cut the cord in August 1993, his team was actually relieved. The graphing calculator program they'd been working on for new mobile devices had finally been shelved, and they could all move on.
Most of his fellow programmers were reassigned to other projects within Apple. The company offered Avitzur a job, too, but it didn't interest him. Avitzur, then 27, had been freelancing at tech companies since he was a student at Stanford-to him, the work wasn't worth it if it wasn't interesting. And what interested him was finishing the graphing calculator program that had just been canceled. But his ambitions were greater than that-Avitzur wanted to make the graphing calculator work on the new PowerPC computer that Apple planned to ship in early 1994.
Read about how he used tricks, guile, a conspiracy of support from other Apple programmers, and months of volunteer work to make his program a standard part of MacOS.
The 50 Greatest American Weirdos, Part 2
Well Hedy Lamarr doesn't really belong on this list but Crispin Glover most definitely does oh yes. If you doubt, check out his version of "These Boots Were Made For Walking". I thought he did an incredible job of acting in River's Edge but later I realized that a lot of it was just channeling his inner weirdo.
It is their...destiny.

I only rarely thought he was funny. But I always thought he was different from anything else, and pretty often, I found that I couldn't stop watching what he was doing.
The stuff I especially liked, I can't really explain why I liked it. Him standing there immobile, while the Mighty Mouse song played, then he gets all animated and joins the chorus with a rousing lip sync. I shouldn't have liked that, but I did.
Watching his Carnegie Hall show, which is on YouTube, gave something that might be an insight: I think he was basically doing a children's show, all along.

What I want is an analysis of the Leftist conversation style, which seems to consist of refusing to acknowledge that the opposition consists of human beings who disagree. Actually, Zombie did a really great version of that, posted here recently (never knew he/she was quite that brilliant, more please). But how about a label? "Stamp your foot" conversational disorder? "I hate my dad and you're just like him" conversational disorder? "Like a shark, I have to keep my hate moving and fresh, or I will start looking inward" disorder?

Andy Kaufman once took his wrestling show to the Playboy channel, and got to wrestle one of the Playboy Playmates who was decked out in a tight spandex body suit. I remember watching this on cable years ago at a friend's house and we both laughed at what an incredible gig Andy had.
Wrestling with a Playboy Playmate who was dressed in a tight spandex bodysuit. What a geek. What a freakin' lucky geek.
And he was funny on "Taxi" where there was some structure of a show that made his freaky character Latkos funny. Latkos was a permanent riff on his play as "foreign man" he did on SNL years before. Afer watching "Taxi" enough, it was hard to believe that this wasn't the way that Kaufman really talked.

Them: "It's a nice day outside."
You: "Yes, it is."
Them: "Not really. It's kind of crappy outside."
You: "Fuck you, cunt."
The problem is not, as the writer posits, a matter of conversational contrarianism (or whatever). The problem is an unwillingness of people to say "Fuck you, cunt" when it's sorely needed. Try it sometime. And be amazed at the result. The power is yours. Use it.

Mrs. Chronda will go on these big, rambling stories during which she leaves out the one word or phrase that would make sense of the whole thing. Sometimes I can figure out what she's left out (usually because I was involved in whatever the story is about) and fill in the gap.
Like she's going on and on with this group of people about something or other and they're just looking at her like she's got two heads or something. Finally, I pipe up and say "Y'know, dear, it might help if you had used the word LEGO in there somewhere", then they'll smile and nod and know what the hell the story was about.
Apparently it's one of her mutant psychic powers like the ability to spend all of the money in my wallet down to the penny without ever having known how much I had to start with or the ability to lose keys WITH HER MIND!

Yes, we are. I am. I try not to do that, but sometimes I still do. But being guilty of this, I know why I do it to women especially. Men seem to know when to leave a rising inflection, or some other vocal signal that the story is not over. Women often seem to drop something that sounds final, and then the listener finds out it was just a way station.

Nobody in either camp could bond. The engineers were not fickle, they simply could not understand why the marketers kept changing essential parameters to every question. The marketers felt the engineers were obtuse.

Their interruption ruins the punchline or the impact.

The problem here is the direct contact between marketers and engineers. It's not natural. You need an interpreter, either a manager or an architect, people who are certified by experience or inclination to bridge the wide gap without getting frustrated. Direct contact destroys engineers' assumption that the marketing people must be pretty smart, too, in their own field (they are, but engineers really have no conception of what that field is and how different and people-oriented it is), and destroys the wizardly mystique of the engineers in the eyes of the marketing people (which they deserve, but whose actual nature marketing people will not ever understand). Bad all around.

Jesus took up the word to give people a message, that excluding the theological aspect, most atheists would agree with. Even hard leftwing "morality" is just a facade slapped on Christian morality.
Muhammed, conversely, took up the sword to force people to submit. It is literally what Islam means.

Perhaps ladies stories should follow the movie formula. I guess in most action movies and such they have a big explosion around the one hour mark to help keep people's interest in the movie. So all ladies' stories should have an explosion at the 5 minute mark. I recommend hiring Michael Bay for the effects.

What you need is a PMO between them staffed with tech savvy people who can tell marketing "no" and have it stick, and who can tell the dev staff to stop whining and suck it up.
One way to make "no" stick is have all design changes, even seemingly trivial ones, require impact assessments from design, development, and test organizations. Even seemingly trivial changes, like going from Ariel (proportional) to Courier (monospaced) can have significant impact on automated test scenario screen scrapers and their associated data files as well as messing with 3rd party software that's being developed concurrently using your alpha/beta releases.
When everyone comes back and says, sure we can do that, but it'll cost 2 weeks on the release date schedule and break XYZ Corp's BarfoCalc that just went to CD manufacturing last week, the marketing guys suddenly get new perspective on how unnecessary it really was.

@66
My favorite Andy Kaufman experience was when he was on the Carol Burnett show, and the setup to his bit began with about six grim-looking black percussionists pounding out a thundering polyrhythmic cadence. Andy came out on stage, proceeded solemnly to his waiting bongo drums, paused theatrically, began slapping away at the drums, and then sang "It's a Small World"...the whole damn song.
He was not even the funniest part of the whole bit. The Black dudes on the drums were glaring holes in the TV, but they kept stoically playing. I swear they weren't in on the bit. Kaufman probably told them they were getting their Big Break or something. Hell, I don't even think Carol Burnett knew what was going on. It went straight to commercial while Kaufman circled his finger for another chorus. And not one of those guys, including Kaufman, ever cracked so much as a smirk. Some serious comedic tension was going on there.
This was in the mid-seventies, I think I was about 16, and I cannot remember another time in my life since then that I have laughed so hard.

The Transformers one is kind of silly too. I mean its true that Michael Bay did that and made non military government personnel idiots. Because that's what the liberals would do. He made them a bit of an over the top caricature in the exact same way he did for the Bush Administration in the first movie. Hell he had Bush make the flight attendant get him ding dongs. And then they were going full bore military ramp up we need to go to war with whoever is attacking us even though we don't know who it is. So first movie has caricature of Conservative hawks. Second movie has caricature of liberal pussies. And they get all upset about their portrayal in a movie because it exposes them for what they are.

The best way to handle mr contrarian is to not give him anything to argue with..since he won't give you any facts back anyway.
Maet: dude, remember that program you did for customer X a while back?
Mr Contrary: The profiler?
Maet: Yeah, give it to me. I need to "profile" something.

Apparently they brought in some models (they all seem to be British and mixed-race West Indian, at a guess), and then... they just left the camera running. Spliced it in with some random stuff just to keep the viewers' attention.
It's interesting as an artistic expression but does it fit the song?

Robotr, you gave him a statement to disagree with. Tsk. The proper response now that he has admitted that he remembers it is to say...give it to me.
And you might as well just go look the program up in source control yourself, or on his hard disk rather than ask him a damn thing.

To me this sounds like a portrait is counteracting the narrator's identity. Especially when sung in Sumner's arch accents and played over a techno beat - which it is - I keep hearing it as the soundtrack to Oscar Wilde's Dorian Grey.
That should have been the video.

Just thought I should post to see if I'm banned.
I work with a contrary conversationalist. He is a pain. He automatically takes the opposite side of any statement I may make. He has stabbed me in the back twice with this tactic. it will not happen again.
He claims to be a libertarian but is actually an anarchist. He claims to be able to see both sides of an argument but is actually a moral relativist. He is morally bancrupt. He is also however, smart, interesting, and capable.
He regrets his vote for Obama ( an effort, he claims, to punish the Rethuglicans for Palin) but has yet to admit he was wrong to vote for an obvious fraud (Obama).
Oddly enough enough I kind of enjoy his company as he forces me to really think through an opinion before I express it, just so I can argue efectively with him.

Heck... I've worn a Tux to a Bikers Bar... and my leather Jacket to a posh Hamptons Cocktail Party.... its NOT what you wear... but the confidence with which you wear it...
