I spent the afternoon at the dentist so that means you're gonna get a half-assed ONT and like it.

Unemployment Trends Over Time, State-by-State

Here's an chart showing the relative unemployment rates of different states over the past 40 years. They're ranked from from the worst long-term average to the best with shades of red denoting higher than national average rates and blue lower than average.

It's pretty clear that West Virginia, Michigan and Alaska have been under-performers for a long time but I was surprised to see that California had only slightly better employment.

Interestingly the rankings don't really change that much when you just look at employment rates since 2010. And unshockingly the best long-term employment states are mostly Red ones with ND, SD, and Nebraska currently dominating.

Why suffer in the Blue state doldrums when a better future awaits you in the off-world colonies Red states?

The 50 Best Movies That You've Never Seen

I've heard good things about most of these but have only actually seen four of them. And those 4 were pretty good actually.

Likely Voters Can't Rank Presidents for Shit

Here's their 10 Best Presidents:

1. Abraham Lincoln, +27 points (28 percent place in top-2, 1 percent place in bottom-2)
2. Ronald Reagan, +25 points (31 percent place in top-2, 6 percent place in bottom-2)
3. Franklin D. Roosevelt, +22 points (23 percent place in top-2, 1 percent place in bottom-2)
4. John F. Kennedy, +19 points (19 percent place in top-2, 0 percent place in bottom-2)
5. (tie) George Washington, +15 points (16 percent place in top-2, 1 percent place in bottom-2)
5. (tie) Bill Clinton, +15 points (28 percent place in top-2, 13 percent place in bottom-2)
7. Thomas Jefferson, +6 points (6 percent place in top-2, 0 percent place in bottom-2)
8. (tie) Teddy Roosevelt, +5 points (5 percent place in top-2, 0 percent place in bottom-2)
8. (tie) Harry S. Truman, +5 points (5 percent place in top-2, 0 percent place in bottom-2)
10. Dwight D. Eisenhower, +4 points (5 percent place in top-2, 1 percent place in bottom-2)

Alana Goodman comments:

Lincoln - great; Reagan - good; FDR - definitely not my choice, but okay, let liberals have their guy in the top three. But hold on here, JFK beats out George Washington? Bill Clinton outranks Jefferson, TR, Truman and Eisenhower? What is Bill Clinton even doing on this list, and how is it that he's tied with the Father of Our Country in fifth place?

And here's their 10 Worst Presidents:

33. (tie) Andrew Johnson, -2 points (0 percent place in top-2, 2 percent place in bottom-2)
33. (tie) Warren G. Harding, -2 points (0 percent place in top-2, 2 percent place in bottom-2)
33. (tie) Calvin Coolidge, -2 points (0 percent place in top-2, 2 percent place in bottom-2)
36. (tie) Lyndon B. Johnson, -3 points (1 percent place in top-2, 4 percent place in bottom-2)
36. (tie) Gerald Ford, -3 points (1 percent place in top-2, 4 percent place in bottom-2)
38. Herbert Hoover, -4 points (0 percent place in top-2, 4 percent place in bottom-2)
39. George H.W. Bush, -9 points (4 percent place in top-2, 13 percent place in bottom-2)
40. Jimmy Carter, -20 points (5 percent place in top-2, 25 percent place in bottom-2)
41. Richard Nixon, -24 points (2 percent place in top-2, 26 percent place in bottom-2)
42. Barack Obama, -25 points (11 percent place in top-2, 36 percent place in bottom-2)
43. George W. Bush, -39 points (4 percent place in top-2, 43 percent place in bottom-2)

The fact that George W. is so far down is a sign of just how successful the Democratic demonization campaign against him was. On the more positive side Obama has already fallen beneath the worst president and ex-president of all time.

Obama Plays The Fundraising Pauper But Is He?

Well to hear him tell it he's just trying to catch up to Romney:

Since losing the monthly fundraising battle for the first time in May to Mitt Romney, the president appears to have changed his fundraising strategy to suggest he's just trying to keep pace.

"We might not out raise Mitt Romney," the president said Saturday in an email to supporters. "But I am determined to keep the margin close enough that we can win this election the right way."

But looking at the funds raised through June 1st Obama has about 8x times as much cash on hand as Romney which means Mitt has a long way to go even with his ObamaCare reaction bump.

Posted by: steevy at July 12, 2012 06:24 PM (Xb3hu)

13 Coolidge is so far down because the Democratic machine has painted him as the guy who caused the Great Depression. I was discussing The Forgotten Man with a friend once whose brother is a HS history teacher and he exclaimed "My brother tells me Coolidge is the worst president ever, etc." all because that's the impression - even though he wasn't in office at the time, Hoover was. But if anything, FDR caused it to turn into a depression but the whitewashers get their victory in history over all of that.

32 Ref the 50 movies. Hmm. I've seen a few on that list. Each I've seen has been very good, at worst, so you should sample ones from that list that appeal to you. The SF ones (moon, primer) and tremendous! Of course, the list is bunk because "The Lives of Others" isn't on it.

53 Your first link should probably go to ZeroHedge, which brought it to that blogger's attention. Mind you, their chart does annoying Java things when you click a row, so, there's that.

Isn't Vermont run by Democrats? It's been doing great lately! It's almost as if the base population of the region has more of a hand in how well they do, than over which team they vote for. . .

Texas has two problems. Yes, the economy there is awesome, but unfortunately everyone knows it's awesome, so unemployed people who aren't bums move there. That runs up the people-looking-for-work metric; and that... is the unemployment rate. The other problem of course is illegal immigration, which pushes citizens out of that work they were looking for.

133 Despite being shown to be wrong, they persist. I just received this email from the "Truth Team".

Friend --

The more everyone finds out about Mitt Romney's finances, the more questions they have. Perhaps that's why he's hiding as much as he thinks he can get away with.

Today, The Boston Globe reported that Romney was still running Bain Capital two years after he claims he left the firm, directly contradicting his campaign's denial that he was involved in deals that led to layoffs, bankruptcies, and American jobs getting shipped overseas.

It's a pattern of secrecy, and this is just the latest example of him trying to hide the truth from voters. There are a number of issues in play right now -- and voters deserve answers:

1) Mitt Romney refuses to release multiple years of taxes, ignoring decades of precedent.

2) He won't disclose his "bundlers," the people raising millions for his campaign.

3) He is the sole owner of a questionable shell corporation in Bermuda.

4) Until recently, Romney kept cash in a Swiss bank account.

5) According to the Globe, he hasn't been honest about when he was running Bain Capital, even though legal documents refute his claims.

Please forward this email and share this with everyone you know who cares about the outcome of this election.

Everyone deserves the right to judge for themselves whether Romney's motivations, experience, and perspective are what they want in a president. But Mitt Romney doesn't want people to have the information they need to make those judgments.

More to come,

Stephanie

and then there's a graphic:

Five Facts about Romney's secrecy

1. Romney refuses to release multiple years of taxes, ignoring decades of precedent.

2. He won't disclose his "bundlers", the people raising millions for his campaign.

3.  He is the sole owner of a questionable shell corporation in Bermuda.

4.  Until recently, Romney kept cash in a Swiss bank account.

5.  According to the Boston Globe, he hasn't been honest about when he was running Bain Capital, even though legal documents refute his claims.

Note the attention to referencing the Boston Globe so that they can later claim that someone else did the fact-checking. They never reference any other source. They KNOW they are wrong.

139 Every year or two there's a book rating the presidents. Here's the latest : http://www.amazon.com/ Where-They-Stand-Presidents-Historians /dp/1451625405/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_4   -- Delete the spaces.

I leafed through this. That book is interesting in that it compares the MSM's ratings against how people rated them at the time. It's doubly interesting in that it (often) takes the peoples' side. So, yes, Harding does get raised up over MSM opinion here, and Coolidge especially gets raised up.

(But there, still, can be no polishing of the turds that were Pierce and Buchanan.)

The book seems to be saying, as subtext and hush-hush, that professional historians nowadays tend to the Left and have been over-rating the Left's presidents, whilst downgrading presidents who weren't that bad (Harding) or were actually good (Coolidge).

Lilya 4-Ever makes you wish that Taken were true.

181 IMO Lincoln was probably a pretty shit president considering the civil disaster that unfolded under his watch. Also, Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover were good, especially Coolidge. Coolidge might be one of the best. They just rate so low because you never hear about them in school but they're recent enough for their names to be familiar. And they're blamed for the Great Depression, instead of the asshole (I won't say who but he's in the Top 3) who actually took a 'depression', added the prefix of 'great', and converted it to ALL CAPS. Now, back to your scheduled broadcasting.

189 The 80's? Really. A few, damn few, decent new groups came out. And most of them only had a couple or so really decent tunes. Most of the good music in the 80's came from bands of the 60's and 70's who were still doing it. Favorite guitar case sticker - It's not that I'm old. Your music really does suck. Note all.

220 Lincoln had the choice of letting the South secede or else fighting a bloody civil war. If you think that the Union is worth saving, then Lincoln was a good President; if you think that the Union is a force of international liberalism, then he was a devil out of the drawings of Volck. (Either way, we must agree that Lincoln was the greatest President.)

Those are the choices you get, re Lincoln. There are no others.

Likewise, if you're pro-Confederacy - you're objectively racist. Your choices there are to accept race realism and white supremacy; or else, to be liberal, and democratic, and ultimately socialist.

History is no comfort to those who want their beliefs to be easy.

223 Rainbow:The Faggoting NY Times: The Episcopal Church on Tuesday approved an official liturgy for blessing same-sex unions, enabling priests who have the approval of their bishops to bestow the church’s blessing on gay couples whether they live in a state where same-sex marriage is legal or not. The adoption of an official rite, significant in a church in which liturgy is central, further solidifies the Episcopal Church’s shift to the left on sexual minorities. A day earlier, the church voted to approve a nondiscrimination policy that will allow transgendered people to be ordained to the priesthood. The vote on gay blessings, which took place at the church’s triennial General Convention in Indianapolis, was 171 to 50. The vote was by the House of Deputies, which includes laypeople and clergy members. The church has a bicameral structure, and its House of Bishops overwhelmingly approved the new liturgy on Monday by a vote of 111 to 41, with 3 abstentions. “This is significant because it’s saying, ‘This is around to stay — this is not a passing fad,’ ” said Mary A. Tolbert, founding director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry at Pacific School of Religion, in Berkeley, Calif. “It’s making a statement about the continued presence of gay and lesbian people among the congregations of the Episcopal Church, and that their lives need to be marked by liturgy as well.”

228 Prosperity!! Weekly Standard: The federal government has been making the case that, with food stamps, “everyone wins,” according to literature meant to promote the federal social welfare program. The argument is that accepting food stamp benefits helps to promote economic growth for the communities hosting those recipients. “Each $5 dollars in new SNAP benefits generates almost twice that amount in economic activity for the community,” states the federal government pamphlet. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the official name of the food stamps program. “Everyone wins when eligible people take advantage of benefits to which they are entitled,” states the pamphlet, which is written and distributed by the United States Department of Agriculture, the federal entity responsible for the program.

Shell and Winn Dixie grocery stores have teamed up to offer discounts. I spent $300 at Winn-Dixie and after the sales were applied, I paid about $240 for the groceries. Then, my rewards card was credited with a 95 cents per gallon discount on fuel and I waited until there was barely a drop in the engine before filling up, so I saved $18 on gas.

They award 5 cents per gallon for every $50 spent but then they have special items that offer bonus awards. For instance, they had BOGO corndogs so I bought those and got another 20 cents per gallon off. All in all, a pretty good deal.

Winn-Dixie also does bundled deals like Buy three GM cereals and the rest of the breakfast; milk, orange juice, muffin mix, and grape jelly are free.

Gas here went from 3.41 to 3.56 in a 4 hour span today. I suspect it will reach 3.60 in a couple days, and hang there.

That caused the insurgency to succeed in 1964-1967.

LBJ's micro management and bombing halts did not do any good either.

South Vietnam and the ARVN had the war under control until the cocksucking, quisling, communist sympathizing, traitors in the Democrat Congress and Democrat party cut off funding for the ARVN. You'd be amazed at all the data settings that can frustrate the shit out of you. One narrative I read about a car that had a Corvette engine dropped into it wouldn't stay running for more than a few seconds. After looking everything over and over and finding nothing wrong, finally someone discovered that the computer coding wasn't right for the theft detection, and the computer shut off thinking the car had been hot wired.

I couldn't get my Firebird to even try to start one time, had to start it by using a screwdriver I could start it by touching the battery lead to the solenoid lead. Turns out the ignition key lost its coding and I had to order another from a GM dealership

I got lucky with the fobs. Right after I bought my jeep there was a recall because the fob could separate from the emergency door key and be lost. S, they had me go to the dealership to pick up two replacements but, instead of keeping the originals, they gave them back to me. Now I have spares.

The batteries may go dead from non-use but shouldn't die as quickly as the ones I am using.

339 338 My first car, a 72' VW Beetle, had none of this crap. Rolldown windows, no automatic anything, no AC, etc. The key was quite good too - made from a decently hard steel rather than easily snapped off brass.

That wonderful car went cross country many times with no incident, and most issues could be resolved on the side of the road. I flogged it hard, offroaded in the desert, went into the mountains.

Damn, I wantanother one.
Posted by: @PurpAv at July 13, 2012 12:40 AM

On Top Gear's Africa Trip epidsode, a VW Beetle followed them, and if one of them could not finish the trip in their cars, they would be forced to finish in the Beetle. The Bug was the only car to make the trip that didn't break down or have to be stripped or altered to the conditions

Woody Allen's "Sleeper" has a scene where he finds a 200 year old VW Bug in a cave and it starts right up. I wouldn't be surprised if that could really end up happening (not counting a fresh battery)

After the engine wore out, you could do a rebuild with a floor jack and a work bench in your garage

Did you know that a Subaru Impreza engine easily fits into an old VW Beetle? Makes for a scary fast Beetle so it's a really good idea to upgrade the suspension and brakes too

349 clip... The article M.D. posted in last weekÂ’s Friday Miscellany on living conditions in Greece really hit home with me. I did a bit more research. There are food shortages. There are shortages of life-saving medications. There are concerns about the power grid. And if the electric grid goes down, clean water may not flow from the tap. In an economic collapse, debit cards may not work; cash will be king. Once awareness of the situation sets in, rioting, looting and violent crime will be the new norm. All I gotta say is it sucks to be unarmed.....

355 Much as it pains me to say it... I'd bet on Michelle Obama to hang tough at the White House, whilst Barky was in an undisclosed location if Vladimir Putin ever came knocking at the door, a la Dolly Madison. Other than Sasha & Malia, I'd probably be pretty pissed off about what she would choose to save and what she would let burn. Granted, thete was a lot less to choose from in Dolly's time but still... As an exercise and without being mean... What do you suppose Michelle Obama *as First Lady* would try to save if she had to flee a burning White House? Now that I think on it, Dolly Madison really fucked up the gig of being First Lady forever, didn't she?

Not quite sure about them. Maybe not for someone as flat footed as I. They got like a fucking bump in the middle meant for someone with an arch? My asshole brother recommends them but I could swear my asshole brother walks like a pigeon. I should know better than to listen to my asshole brother, but sometimes he just sounds so convincing. Oh well. Or maybe it's just cause I'm such a fat fucking fuck and so out of shape, yeah? I dunno. I expect to beat these sonsabitches back in the coming weeks. But damn, harsh on the dawgs, ya know? I'm tryin' my best to get into shape. I'm so out of shape and need to get into shape. I've had great success so far, but I think I've hit the limits of the current ray-jeem. 423 Robert, for early stages of foot-pain-inducing exercise, consider one of them Thar "Gazelle Freestyle" style swingy things. Easy on the feet. Ish. Note that the super cheap one only holds 200 lbs... but even the one a step up from that is pretty cheap. Not as good exercise as running but indoors for when it's too wet or hot or whatever. Can exercise upper and lower body. Also when it's indoors you can do 5 min here or 5 min there, as convenient. Not very loud, seems to be pretty reliable, had mine for a year and a half.

Robert, I hope you find something that works for you.  I lost about 30 lbs when I started working again and had to walk back and forth from the train every day for my commute.  That was it...didn't really alter my diet at all.

429 I've also seen four of the fifty.  Idiocracy is not quite as good as a I wanted it to be, but very entertaining nonetheless.  Layer Cake was excellent.  Iron Giant was overrated.  And I liked Primer a lot, but still don't know exactly what happened...

The JFK idolization is a perfect example of media creation at its best.

1.  He accomplished nothing.

2.  He was not a Berliner.

3.  He traded off missle bases in Turkey for those in Cuba which was trumpeted as a feat of tough diplomacy while pissing off a bunch of Turks.

4.  Managed to kill or imprision our Cuban allies with his botched invasion at the Bay of Pigs.

5.  Got himself shot whereof the media could blame the city of Dallas and their police department, the FBI, the CIA, more Cuban allies, and  conservatives everywhere while ignoring the fact that he was nailed by a genuine card-carrying communist.

6.  Gave rise to the adoration of a  horde of Kennedy drunks, murderers, idiots of various stripe and imbecilic children and their progeny.

Somehow his image is pushed so hard that he constantly pops up in a list of the greats.  Got me stumped.

431 The sample chart that's posted does NOT match the description. Anyone scrutinizing it could see that. The points are still valid, though. Let's at least be intelligent morons. Visit the Tableau site for the real deal: http://www.tableausoftware.com/learn/gallery/unemployment-horizon-chart

432 My favorite was Wm. Henry Harrison.  Dies a month into office.
