 Happy Cost of Government Day

hayward-cost-of-government-day-july-15-2012-620x415

Congratulations - you've been working exclusively for the government all year until today. And now you get to keep what you earn.*

Come sundown on Sunday, you all are free of your 2012 obligations to the government. Which now takes 197 days out of your year. My advice: you begin telling every "progressive" and Democrat you know who tries to engage you or approach you or talk to you or ask something of you, that you're now closed for business, and would they kindly piss off.

And believe it or not we're actually worse than the UK which left annual tax-serfdom back in June:

Tax Freedom Day only measures the money actually raised by the government in taxes, not the full amount it spends. The government borrows one pound for every four it raises in taxes, so if the full cost of government is considered the Cost of Government Day, this would fall on 23rd June.

* Unless you live in CT, NY, or NJ in which case you've got a few more weeks to go.

Remembering Telstar

Just over 50 years ago the world got smaller with the launch of the first commercial communications satellite:

The launch of the original Telstar satellite on 10 July 1962 was a true communications breakthrough, allowing for television, phone, and even fax transmissions to be beamed around the world via space rather than through transcontinental cables. It also allowed for even more precise time synchronization between North American and Europe.

Telstar was a truly international project, combining the efforts of American, British and French agencies. They created a satellite that is a mere 34.5 inches in diameter and weighs just 77 pounds.

It runs on just 14 watts of power, provided by a series of solar panels placed around the spherical surface.

Sadly it failed within a year most likely due to radiation left over from the space nuclear test, Starfish Prime. But it revolutionized communications and had an immense effect on pop culture influencing everything from robots to soccer balls. And it's still up there orbiting even today.

Universities Going Full-Tilt Left

Academia is strongly tilted to the left today but there are conservative faculty members. But based on these statistics universities will be conservative-free in 25 years or so.

The slant is even now rapidly increasing. At Berkeley the 2004-5 imbalance in political affiliation for the most senior faculty (full professors) was 8.3-1, but for the next rank (associate professors) it was an overwhelming 30-1. And for the most junior level (assistant professors) the figure was almost exclusionary at 64-1. Assistant professors are the most recent hires, and associate professors the ones immediately preceding. These strongly suggest that the university of tomorrow will virtually exclude political or social perspectives that are not left of centre. Attempts to stop this trend, or even to draw attention to it, are dismissed as partisan. Campus liberals are too comfortable with the status quo to worry about a problem that seems to trouble only people unlike themselves. What will happen when the world of academia has finally taken an ideological shape completely unlike that of the world beyond the campus gates?

Over-priced and ideologically out of step with the rest of the country is not a sustainable business model.

Investors: America is Where to Send Your Money

Despite all of our issues to investors we're still the best bet:

The U.S.-the world's most popular destination for capital-is becoming more appealing relative to other economies. Foreign investment into China-the second-most-popular destination-grew around 8% in 2011 from the previous year, to $124 billion, compared with the U.S.'s 15% gain.

Why the Official Pictures of US Olympic Athletes Sucked So Much

I saw some of these on a news site and I thought they looked like crap but assumed that since they were the official ones, maybe it was some kind of new ironic instagram-like aesthetic of bad photography.

But no - it turns out that the photographer was just unprepared:

"I was under the impression that I was going to be photographing athletes on a stage or during press conference where I would take their headshots for our archives," he explained. "I really had no idea that there would be a possibility for setting up a studio." It was the first time AFP had been invited to participate in the U.S. Olympic Committee's Media Summit, which was held this year, in May, at a Hilton Hotel in Dallas.

Joe had come armed with two cameras and three lenses (17-35, 70-200 and 300), plus one flash and a 12-inch laptop. To his horror, he saw upon arriving that his colleagues from other news agencies and media organizations had set up studio booths with professional lights, backdrops and prop assistants.

How To Shave Really Old School

As in cave man-style. Mike Cook is no slave to the razor-blade industrial complex - he just knaps off a piece of obsidian and starts shaving.

Some of you sissies are still shaving with sharpened shovels. But Mike Cook does it old school-as in using Stone Age technology. Watch him knap a slice of obsidian off a block and then shave his face with it.

Cook refers to obsidian as "the sharpest substance known to science." I don't know if that's true, but at the link, you can see electron micrographs of a surgical scalpel and an obsidian blade. The obsidian appears to have a sharper edge.

7 Finish the destruction of the USA. The Hill: President Obama dismissed suggestions that young voters who backed him in 2008 were less enthusiastic this election cycle, saying that he believed they wanted to “finish what we started.” In an interview with local Washington D.C. station WJLA released Sunday, the president predicted young voters would again rally behind his presidency. “2008, obviously your first time around in some ways it was lightning in a bottle. There were so many young people who just automatically got involved and, you know, we’ve gone through three and a half tough years. The economy is tough, especially for young people,” Obama acknowledged, according to a transcript of the interview. But Obama said he was “encouraged” by the number of young voters volunteering for his campaign. “We are still seeing just tons of volunteers getting involved, a lot of passion, a lot of interest. And I think the reason is they understand in some ways this election is more important than 2008,” he said. “The choice in terms of the direction we want to take the country is very stark this time, so the stakes are big, and I think people want to finish what we started in 2008.”

28 Academia is strongly tilted to the left today but there are conservative faculty members. But based on these statistics universities will be conservative-free in 25 years or so.

But, as has often been pointed out, what cannot continue, will not. It's perfectly obvious that "higher ed" cannot go on as it is, so something will change, and most likely that will be the hard-left culture that teaches nothing useful.

The trouble is, college grads in the "humanities" (or at least in English and Literature) cannot think and don't have the faintest idea how to analyze anything.

3 Amelia Earhart was,by many accounts,a poor pilot.

There were a few other female pilots who were close to setting some "Firsts" back then too.

Some said, the whole reason she became a pilot in the first place.....was to go after the "first female pilot" records.

Male or female....setting records should be a secondary concern to developing good piloting skills.

Or the consequences could be deadly.

73 "The trouble is, college grads in the "humanities" (or at least in English and Literature) cannot think and don't have the faintest idea how to analyze anything. Posted by: Dianna" That wasn't as true years ago. I went to a not particularly demanding state university in the late sixties, early seventies, and professors didn't let you get away with just spouting of opinions. You had to justify what you said and at least show some logic. History professors could really tear apart your reasoning, and you learned the first few weeks of freshman year not to just write a bunch of drivel. They were also like that in classroom discussions. And people who were of a more conservative bent were not disrespected.

Okay, looking for the Moron Horde collective info again.

The deal is, since I'm attempting to live on the income from John's life insurance (and Aid to Dependant Children for a bit) it would behoove me to be in a state with low taxes and low cost of living. As much as I'd like to go back to family in CO, housing prices and living costs make it less attractive than it normally would be.  I also need a state that is accepting of home-schooling, is relatively sunny, and has a moderate climate.

The question is, which states qualify best?

One interesting claim is that this all can be laid at the feet of the Vietnam War draft, and the college exemption. The lefties stayed in college as long as they could, rather than serve, collecting advanced degrees, then found that they were only fit for professorships, so they stayed on.

91 One interesting claim is that this all can be laid at the feet of the Vietnam War draft, and the college exemption. The lefties stayed in college as long as they could, rather than serve, collecting advanced degrees, then found that they were only fit for professorships, so they stayed on. Posted by: Splunge at July 15, 2012 10:58 PM (2IW5Q) I remember plenty of teachers who said they stayed in school to beat the draft. They were all lefties.

Posted by: eman at July 15, 2012 07:00 PM (ejmiE)

92 The best way to fix college is to get the federal government out of the financial aid equation.  If student loans were guaranteed by actual banks or if the universities guaranteed their own loans, you wouldn't see a lot of loans being awarded to people majoring in women's studies or (fill in the blank) science.  Banks would make loans to people majoring in subjects that actually lead to good paying jobs cuz they kind of want their money back some day. (Sorry Occupiers)

I suspect that the cost of a college education would actually go down because, just like the housing bubble, the cost of college will keep going up until the money tap is turned off.

93 Malamutt wrut @ 78,

They also sent up a midget to take one at bat......the midget got walked on 4 pitches and was promptly pitch ran for.

Eddie Gaedel was the guy. Bill Veeck, who owned the Browns at the time, snuck Gaedel's contract through the AL front office in such a way that they never got wind of the prank, the point of which (of course) was to put a guy up whose strike zone was so tiny that a pitcher would find it nearly impossible to get a ball through it.

Veeck warned Gaedel never to take the bat off his shoulder, under penalty of death. He told Gaedel that he'd be stationing a sniper in the owner's box with instructions to shoot to kill if he swung.

It isn't dying, it's just overinflated in it's importance.

One big solution is to get rid of the graduate level programs that don't need to be graduate level.  If the requirements for the bar were the same as those for getting your CPA, you'd see a lot Poli-Sci departments take a hit.  Same with if Medical School was not restricted by so many state regulations.

Its like when they say give SCoaMF the respect of the  office of the presidency. Bullshit. Heckle him down anytime he shows his face in public, and if you can get away with not receiving a 20 year prison sentence, throw a tomato at his face too.

188 Heh. Over on Warm Gas, tried to post the following with regard to "the candidates must produce a plan to deal with the train wreck we're headed into":

The plan we need is very simple. There's going to be pain -- things have gone on too long in too many fields to avoid that. So let's choose where the pain hits.

I think that the pain shouldn't hit the farmers of Nebraska, the oil workers of North Dakota, the furniture builders in North Carolina, the casinos of Nevada, the insurance companies of Connecticut, our brave men and women in the military, the media workers in Hollywood, or timbermen in Oregon....half as hard as it hits the worthless Federal bureaucrats in Washington, D. C. that got us to this ugly place.

Fire 3/4 of them, and cut the salaries of the rest. Tell the EPA to stop blowing smoke, the Dept. of Education to stop stuffing dollars into its entire program of failure, open up the resources in the land of the United States to the ingenuity of the people of the United States, end market-distorting subsidies and grants across the board. Put each agency's servers onto the internet, so people can see the dripping contempt and scheming that drives their every action, pink-slip the employees, and sell the buildings so they don't come back.

And every time we hear a sob story from anywhere in the country, fire more bureaucrats. It's not like they've ever helped anything.

The only time I was able to see fireflys was on my Aunt's place in Rockford Illinois. My Aunt made us quit early and made us sit down in the living room to watch the moon landing. No, there are single edge razor blades available at Home Depot (in a spring-loaded cartridge, ejected by thumb) that are for general purpose "stuff" and will fit one of the straight razor variants (frequently used by barbers) that takes a blade.

These will leave marks ... I was 18 ... thought I knew better. The blades barbers use have rounded corners. They are NOT available at Home Depot.

304 I've read several books about Amelia Earhart. One was Ric Gillespie’s book “Finding Amelia: The True Story of the Earhart Disappearance”, published in 2006. Apparently the British found human remains on Gardner’s Island in 1940 that were since misplaced. The account of the radio distress calls heard by Betty Klenck is absolutely chilling. On the other hand, there’s also “Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved” by Elgen M. Long, published in 1999. He took into account the fuel usage of the Electra (a young Lockheed engineer by the name of Kelly Johnson was involved in calculating those figures) and concluded that there was no way in hell she could have made it to Gardner’s Island, and likely ditched in the ocean near Howland. Earlier, there was “The Search for Amelia Earhart” by Fred Goerner, published in 1966. He theorized that she landed in the Marshall Islands and was interned by the Japanese and later died on Saipan. Admiral Chester Nimitz was featured prominently in that book, encouraging Goerner in his investigation. All three books are utterly fascinating, and point in completely different directions. The only way this thing will be settled one way or another is to find the Electra. If the TIGHAR people think she ended up on Gardner’s Island, then they should be focusing on searching the waters around the island for the plane’s remains. But Goerner recounted an eyewitness claim that the plane was found during WWII and was deliberately destroyed.

The Japanese had some interesting air/naval technology in the lead up to the war.

As one out of the blue possibility - imagine you are a Japanese commander and spot a couple of Americans hiding in the jungle where you are testing out your new Kawanishi H6K (an airboat).

So you send them to an internment camp and there the commander finds out he has one of America's biggest celebrities imprisoned...and since the Japanese government does not want to piss off the US more then they have to, he takes care of the problem and Earhart disappears...

321 #327  18-1  that is the theory if Earhart managed to be taken to Saipan.  She and Noonan were simply killed by the Japanese troops.  There have even been 'eyewitness' accounts from locals of a white woman and white man being killed.

In 1943 the Japanese commander of captured Wake Island had the 93 civilian contractors, who were captured when Maj. Devereux surrendered, murdered.

Or in 1944. During the American attack on the island of Truk in the Carolines, around 100 women, (most of them 'Comfort Women' girls forced into prostitution by the Japanese Army) took shelter in a dugout behind the Naval base where they worked. With defeat staring them in the face, the Japanese, fearing that the 'comfort women' would be an encumbrance and an embarrassment, should they fall into American hands, decided to dispose of them. During a lull in the fighting, three ensigns were sent to the dugout. Armed with machine guns, they approached to find a few women emerging from the pitch-dark interior. The women were immediately shot on the spot. Entering the dugout with guns blazing, the ensigns fired randomly in the darkness. When the screams of the women had died down and only the moans of the wounded could be heard, the ensigns flicked on their torches to find around seventy bodies, drenched in blood, lying on the floor

333

There was a TV show in the late 1970s or early 1980s that made a good case for Earhart being a Japanese prisoner. They had a number of GIs that told of finding her plane on some island they captured. Some even wrote down numbers. A special plane was sent from Hawaii, and after looking at it and working on it, an American pilot fly it off the island. The GI that opened the safe on the Japanese commander of the island said on camera that he found her leather monogrammed flight case in the safe and her scarf. That was taken away by the Hawaiian contingent. Officers from that party told the guys that found the plane to keep their mouths shut--they didn't see anything. The show found an old native woman that told of seeing a white woman as a special prisoner. She was often raped publicly by some of the officers. She saw them execute the woman and bury her when the Americans were starting their attack.

The Japanese were worried about US spies viewing their pre-war operations and preparations. The Americans were worried about the US public reaction with a beloved celebrity like Amelia Earhart in light of plans for post-war plans for Japan.

346 After the Japanese government failed to squash the mutiny of the Manchurian army it was only a matter of time.  One of the things for a government to form the Prime Minister need a Minister for the Army, the officer selected had to be on active duty.  If a PM appointed someone the Army did not like, that guy was immediately retired.  So that is how the Army had the veto on the civilian government of Japan in the 1930s.  Plus the odd assassination of problem politicians.

I have OCD and whenever I get wind of that blasted 1962-era battery-operated Clavioline synthesizer (yeah, I've read about it) that sounds to my ears like literally a billion filthy flies all buzzing at once, it practically takes listening to my entire Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and several other classic rock catalogs non-stop for a month to drill it back out.

It didn't help either, of course, when I looked up the history of the song. It turns out its producer, Joe Meek, was not only one of the unluckiest folks on the earth, he was crazy as a loon to boot. Thanks to not paying attention to the contracts he'd already signed, all the royalties from sales of Telstar got tied up in court, leaving Meek virtually penniless, until he was finally awarded said monies in February 1967... exactly one month *after* he had murdered his London landlady, then immediately killed himself in his studio afterwards. Yeesh.

356 The Obama says  “if youÂ’ve got a business, you didnÂ’t build that.”, well that is just about crazy enough to convince almost everyone who never built a business. Or convince anyone who ever worked at a business where the guy/gal that started it worked harder than anyone else, or convince anyone who ever got up in the morning and went to work somewhere that has been in business for more than two weeks! What a moe-ron! This can't go on. Crush him, Mitt. Right hook! Uppercut! Forget the jabs, man, just pound him! Wade in!

Hi Polliwog:

I'm late to this thread but here's an interesting site that gives you the ability to input your choices on just about everything and comes up with quite a few towns/cities that match your criteria.

http://www.findyourspot.com/how-it-works

If I recall, you need to register first and then you can Start the Quiz and play forever.

365 Merlot...I'm a shiraz/cabernet kinda guy. I made the mistake of hardly eating Thursday night and drinking...a lot. Was only a little tipsy but woke up with an awful hangover. I guess this weight loss thing means I can't drink as much as I used to without feeling it more.

366 Actually, if you're a poor guy or gal, you're going to have to work a few more days, since you likely spend a higher-than-average proportion of your income on taxation. Keep working for the man.

Consider the amount of expendable income you have left after paying the necessities of life...rent or mortgage, groceries, gas, utilities.

Now consider that the amount you pay in taxes is likely 10 times what you have left over.

Even a 10% reduction in your tax burden would double the money you have available discretionary (i.e., quality-of-life) spending.

Taxes should always be compared to discretionary income, not total income.

372 Morning morons. I guess we're in for a week of Mitt the Felon talk. Romney should take Rahm's advice - stop whining, and talk about THE ECONOMY instead.

374 What is going on in academia has to do with hiring criteria.  Many of these positions almost require a social activism type of experience which conservative students just don't have (or don't have the correct kind of).  In addition, many rely on applicants having received "Fellowships" (often from government agencies) that have ways of filtering out conservative students.  I have actually seen these government "Requests for Application" (which are available online), and they deliberately mix in activist criteria (such as creating better environments for "disadvantaged communities").  So you all are surprised by the results?

375 Concerning Tax Freedom Day....WHERE IS NEW YORK?  Working in Manhattan and having to pay two state taxes as a non-resident (yeah...that's right...my state and NY both require state taxes regardless of domicile) I can't help thinking that NY should be just above or below the Nutmeg state.

376 The Tax Freedom Day chart was brought to you by our Liberal Arts educated masses, apparently. 51 lines, 26 labels, and what state is IO? Geez.
