Barack Obama Channels his Inner Fake Cherokee
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don't do on our own
Yeah Ace covered this earlier but I think it's worth covering again for what it says about the left.
A key trait of the left is that its political positions are almost always emotion-based rather than reasoned out from a set of principles. There may be intellectual arguments for their policies but they're almost always tacked on long after the fact to justify a position that feels right. So it's natural that they will try to sell a position using the same quality that makes it so appealing to them.
One shared quality among humans (and some apes) is that we all have a built-in sense of fairness in our brains - or to be more accurate a keen detector of unfairness. And leftists use this unfairness sensor all the time when they're promoting forms of wealth redistribution e.g. it's *unfair* that the rich have so many boats and houses when there are working people who can't feed their families.
By re-framing a situation into an 'unfair' narrative they're trying to activate people's anti-unfairness brain circuitry to get them to emotionally accept the proposed solutions to make things 'fair' again. Now this works fairly often but it's certainly not the magic bullet that leftists believe it is. In particular it only works if the proposed 'fairness' solution doesn't itself also activate the unfairness-detector.
Now Americans generally admire people who've built up their own successful businesses through hard work, investment of money and huge amounts of time - so much so that this is a key component of the American Dream. So when politicians talk about making these businesses - particularly small ones - pay much higher taxes and fees, it also seems unfair that those who've made risks and worked very hard to build something should be the very ones to be singled out to have more of their earned wealth taken away. That also sets the unfairness neurons a-twitchin'.
The left knows this which is why they're always looking for some way to disqualify and devalue the achievements of successful entrepreneurs. So it's no surprise that both Elizabeth Warren and Obama (using nearly the same words) claim that no one really builds a business by themselves - it's really the result of government help, the work of other people, and plain luck.
Then it follows that business owners don't fully deserve their financial gains either and so it's completely reasonable to make them share it with others. Thus taking more from the successful who earned it is now the truly fair thing to do.
Of course their no-one-is-really-independently-successful argument is wrong for a host of reasons but now you know why they're making it in the first place.
Jonah Goldberg on the Suckiness of the UN
Not everything the U.N. does is evil. Some of it is just incompetent. The whole of what passes for the "international community" has been trying to enforce sanctions on Iran and North Korea. But nobody told the U.N.'s intellectual-property agency, it was revealed earlier this month, so they went ahead and gave North Korea and Iran computers and IT equipment.A few days later, the invaluable human-rights group U.N. Watch reported that Iran was elected to the U.N. Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, despite having just been declared guilty - in a U.N. Security Council report! - of illegally shipping guns and bombs to Syria.
Speaking of Syria, which is currently violating agreements to not murder its own people, it recently had a big victory at the Human Rights Council. Syria co-sponsored and passed a resolution pushed by Cuba (and supported by the usual Legion of Doom nations) to establish a "Right to Peace." The document is a lot of boilerplate until you get to the part where it says "all peoples and individuals have the right to resist and oppose oppressive colonial, foreign occupation." This is Middle East-speak for "It's okay to blow up Israelis."
Up is down, black is white, and human rights are really just a boot stamping you in the face in some hell-hole state.
China's Beautiful 'Green Cities'
The praise for the People's Republic of China isn't just coming from the likes of Barack Obama and Thomas Friedman, both of whom pine for a simpler, more -- eh -- totalitarian form of government. The PRC party line is also gleefully recited by the hacks at USA Today, who claim that "China builds [the] most ecologically friendly cities."
Designed to be low-carbon and energy-saving, China is building more eco-cities, as they are known, than any other country, according to a survey by the University of Westminster in London. The United States ranked second.
But one thing we learned from the fall of the Iron Curtain is that communist countries treat their environments the same way they treat their citizens - brutally and nastily - and lie about it the entire time.
Pity USA Today is only in the business of reformatting PRC press releases and can't concentrate on the real environmental issues in Red China. As CBS News reports, 16 of the 20 most polluted cities on the planet are in China.
Games collection sells on eBay for US$1.2 million
Perhaps if you'd geeked out just a little harder this could've been you:
The collection is ridiculously complete, with every single game released on every Sega console, every game for many of Nintendo's consoles, and full sets for lesser-known consoles such as the PC Engine and Pioneer's Laseractive. All of the games are either factory-sealed or in mint condition with the original boxes and instructions. As an extra assurance the seller promised the collection came from a "pet-free/smoke-free home" and were "stored out of direct sunlight." The listing also contains hundreds of photos of the collection. The asking price for this mind-blowing collection of games was equally gob-smacking, with the seller only willing to part with his collection for 999,999 euro (approx. US$1,230,699.99).
Including Stallone back in the day.

As for Comrade Obama. So will he now admit, after a microsecond of introspection, that he got where he got only because other people selected him to be there? Probably not.

Another reason why they make this argument is that it just so happens that Leftist busybodies really like having jobs where they can redistribute others' wealth without actually having to compete for that wealth and the only place where one finds such jobs is in government. So, the argument is "ideological" in the most basic sense of being a smokescreen for procuring income. I don't believe syllable one about that "helping the poor" crap. It's all a big jobs program for sociology/poli sci majors and other assorted dregs of society.

Poor people in America are generally fat. If they aren't obese that is.
Which is perhaps the perfect metaphor for government.
We solved the hunger problem...now we've made them all fat. So we need more money to make them not fat.

In a workshop Friday at the Hackers On Planet Earth conference in New York, a German hacker and security consultant who goes by the name “Ray” demonstrated a looming problem for handcuff makers hoping to restrict the distribution of the keys that open their cuffs: With plastic copies he cheaply produced with a laser-cutter and a 3D printer, he was able to open handcuffs built by the German firm Bonowi and the English manufacturer Chubb, both of which attempt to control the distribution of their keys to keep them exclusively in the hands of authorized buyers such as law enforcement.

I got my current job through a recruiter. He in fact got me two offers at the same time, and ended up pissing off the company I turned down when they found out he was handling me at both places (I didn't give up the secret).
I saved his ass though by finding him another candidate to fill the other role.
Now my ex company laid off a bunch of good people last week, and I can point them to the recruiter who got me placed. However...it seems that I might have some leverage, and a proven record, with this recruiter.
So how should I approach seeing if I can get something out of any placements he makes? Or am I being crazy and they don't do things like this?

The most critical mistake conservatives have made in judging liberals is presuming they are merely naive and unrealistic.

However, they are amazingly insular. There is a lot they don't know. They really believe people who oppose Obama are racists. They believe it like an axiom in geometry.
They really believe conservatives hate poor people, and like war, and all that bullshit. And if you talk to them and explain how wrong their worldview is, they assume you're lying.
It's not evil, not all of them. A lot of them are just stupid, and a vast number of them are incredibly self-absorbed.

ThatÂ’s at first glance, at least. Two experts who recently scoured Section 1401 think they found something huge: a missing word that could undercut the Affordable Care ActÂ’s promise of affordable health insurance.
Case Western Reserve UniversityÂ’s Jonathan Adler and Cato InstituteÂ’s Michael Cannon argue in a new paper that any federally-established health insurance exchange does not have the authority to dole out health insurance subsidies. Those subsidies are important: They are the $800 billion in tax credits meant to subsidize coverage for low- and middle-income Americans.
If that is true — and it’s worth noting that the Obama administration, along with a number of legal scholars, argue that it is not — it would significantly curtail the Affordable Care Act’s ability to do what it’s supposed to do: make health care affordable. And that puts Section 1401 at the center of a burgeoning debate over what Congress meant when it wrote the Affordable Care Act, and how that effects its ultimate implementation.

It is interesting to observe the liberal perception of reality - namely that it is highly malleable.
Thoughts are more important then actions, and can by themselves remake the universe.
And oh how they rail against the reality that is. As observed of one other liberal of some renown, they would rather rule in their own hell then recognize the futility of their rebellion.

I've never been much of a computer gamer and have never owned any of the gaming consoles. I'm old school and prefer to do my wargaming either with tabletop miniatures or boardgames.
Pay over $1 million for games? I thought I was living on the edge when I ponied up a few hundred dollars for several mint condition wargames published in the 1980s.

Liberals? Misunderstood? Sure, at least one or two. Probably.
Let me tell you about the times I have been threatened, intimidated, attacked, and insulted by those mis-informed liberals.
My brother-in-law for 34 years? Choked me over a political disagreement. I try to put that behind me, but really. Fuck that guy. I've really had it with him.
This fat, overweight, obnoxious old liberal guy that is supposed to work for me? Tries to stir up shit every time you give him half a chance. If it was up to me, I'd fire his ass. He makes me so sick I'm just about to quit because I really can't stand his shit anymore.

My daughter, who is now 30, did a summer there between her freshman and sophomore years in college. She probably did it because we were a big "Disney family". (Nothing wrong with that!). She hated it, but loved it. They pay a pittance, and work you like a rented mule. But, experience! I would say go for it, but it's hard, and not appreciated. Just like life, so, yeah, go for it. Can't hurt, might help, and you get a real awakening about real life masquerading as fantasy. Your kids won't be naive after the experience, that's for sure. I believe that is always good!

100 Thanks everyone for the info last night. Now I have a different question. Has anyone worked for Disney at Disney World? For some reason my three youngest kids have decided that when they turn 20, 18, and 16 they would like to live and work in Florida and since they're all very out-going and hard workkers I suggested Disney. Is there anything they should think about over the next eight years to make that more likely to happen?
Posted by: Polliwogette, teahada Hobbit at July 16, 2012 10:57 PM (h6HiH)
Disney has high recruiting standards depending on what type of job they want to work. If they want to compete to be a Disney character, they will look at their school grades, any volunteer work, extra-curricular activities, etc.
So our President wouldn't qualify. Not even as Odumbo.

Trust me, I am more than ready to go Galt.
Not meaning to pick on you, but what could you possibly be waiting for? In all seriousness, that quote from Obama is probably the most evil sentence that has ever been uttered by a President of the United States. It is a complete rejection of the value of the individual human being. The attitude of "Well, if he gets re-ected, then, by golly, I'll really be upset" doesn't cut it. The motor of the world needs to stop NOW. I understand people's desire to provide for their families, but anything beyond that is cooperation with your own hangman.
Sure, maybe I'm just psyched because I just watched Atlas Shrugged on DVD (and was reminded that Breitbart was in the background in the anniversary party scene). But I started my own version of going Galt years ago, and it's getting lonely out here.

The Obama argument is that success only comes through collective action and the individual is unimportant. But everyone has the same access to the public goods that Obama credits for success (even though a smaller and smaller portion of the public actually pays for those goods). So the fact that one person utilizes those opportunities to make himself successful while another doesn't, doesn't mean that the unsuccessful one was cheated out of anything and has a claim on the rewards of another. He had his chance and either by choice or luck didn't achieve what the other did. There is no injustice to be remedied.

"I agree with your premise but somehow, no one ever seems to list any of the reasons why the argument is wrong."
The argument is self evidently fallacious, but since you can't seem to work that out, here you go:
President Obama's argument is that since nobody is 100% totally alone and self-made, then rich people should pay more in taxes, since government was behind all that stuff they built themselves up on.
That's it, that's why he even brought this up. The problem isn't that we disagree that everyone had to lean on someone else, its the idea that everyone had to lean on the government.
For example, Hershey didn't become a multi-millionaire making tasty chocolate bars because the federal government helped him, he did so because he worked hard. The people who helped him get there WERE PAID FOR THEIR HELP because that's how the free market works.
Nobody is an island, nobody is totally self-made. But government didn't make them, either, and almost in every case the people who did were compensated for their efforts.
President Obama wants the people who pay the vast bulk of taxes to pay EVEN MORE because he argues they didn't make it on their own. Which is irrelevant to taxation, pointless in this context, and simply an idiotic argument for increased taxes, given the amount paid now.
And since you could tax every single penny every single person alive making more than $250000 a year makes for the whole year and still only pay for a few weeks on the INTEREST ALONE of the national debt, its simply meaningless.

What might Leonardo Da Vinci have done if given an RandD organization of the sort that Edison pioneered? Da Vinci existed in a world where his ability to devote time to his interests depended on a small set of wealthy patrons. A free and prosperous society allows the talented to do more. Nobody, least of all a government, can predict where that next bright spark with a big idea will appear. We can only seek to build the best world for ourselves and try not to be in the way when that person comes along.
It may be an advance in treating cancer. It might be a hot new style trend in women's shoes. No matter how frivolous it might seem to some, if it generates economic activity, there is benefit to all. Government has never been able to generate economic activity other than in those areas which are its defined duties, such as a product that may be useful tot he military and nobody else. For the vast majority of human endeavors the best thing the government can do is not attempt to understand it too early and especially not try to help, as that is all too often indistinguishable from intentional hindrance.

Ask yourself why all the Occupoopers don't run successful businesses, if all it takes is a grotesquely-large government writing reams of self-contradictory regulations?
The government doesn't supply the ideas, planning, drive, risk-taking, sweat and toil it takes to start up and run a successful business. Government is dependent on the owners of those businesses, and ought to be extremely fucking careful of creating a situation where it's no longer worthwhile to them to put in what it takes to bring an innovation to fruition. Not to mention that, once they're running a successful business, the "somebody else" in Obama's idiotic formulation who's supplying the vast majority of tax revenue to build that road or bridge or (far more often) paying the salary of whichever insulated bureaucratic shithead decided they need to cream off some money to pay for a wind turbine so that electrical power generation can be less reliable and cost eight times, is, hey!, that same business owner.
I leave you with a Heinlein quote:
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded- here and there, now and then- are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.

Should we put an 'Ambition Tax' on our roads to level everything out?
How can things be both "fair" and "equal" at the same time? Paying a 'fair share' and paying an 'equal share' are not the same thing, are they?
If freedom is the right to be different from everyone else, does that not include a different level of wealth? If everything in our lives is quantifiable with money, do we have the right to choose anything?

Barack Obama is a direct product of the welfare state. People, in his point of view, can never do anything except through government..When every opportunity and every meal and every opportunity, of a person from a broken family, comes through government, they begin to see government as the center of the family unit. Obama's daddy, whomever he might be :-) , was a drunken, abusive asshole who abandoned his family. And now the adult Barry is a product of that distorted reality.
