"The Obama Effect": Not a Parody
Okay when I first watched this trailer I thought it was just a fairly lame SNL attempt at parody but nooooo...it's for reals - as in people are actually going to the theater tonight and paying money to see it without men with guns or kidnapped children in vans down by the river being involved.
Charles Dutton wrote and directed this movie where he plays man in his 50's who has a heart attack and then develops a obsessive man-crush on the presidential candidate, Barack Obama. He dedicates his entire life to Obama's campaign but then realizes - thanks to the guidance of Saint Obama - that he's also neglected his family and friends. Luckily thanks again to the 'Obama Effect' he gets his life back on the right path just as Obama sweeps to glorious victory in the 2008 election.
Yep there's 83 more minutes of maudlin agit-prop where this came from. Even Twilight-loving Mrs. Justin Bieber-signature-practicing middle-school fan girls would find this movie just a bit heavy handed. And before you watch the trailer below be sure and read King Shamus' epic take-down of it here.
Oh and the black Republican character is supposed to be an over-the-top caricature but I'm betting that a movie about him would have been a lot more entertaining, interesting and profitable as well.
According to this movie Democrats quit their jobs, have uncontrollable man-crushes on their presidential candidates and annoy their neighbors. In the meantime, Republicans get to be rich and have a lot of sex. Was the script written by Ralph Nader?
Conclusion: What is the point of "The Obama Effect"? Seriously, what story is this flick supposed to tell? I think everybody knows Obama won the 2008 election. We needed a feature length motion picture to fill us in on that?...Apparently "The Obama Effect" means people should sacrifice their time, money and livelihood so that their dreamy puppy-dog crush can live in a nice house and rule over us all in an imperious fashion.
If that's the case, then we've all been living The Obama effect for the last three years, whether we wanted to or not.
Of course as a convicted felon Charles Dutton couldn't actually vote for Obama himself in 2008 so I guess this movie falls under fantasy-prop as well.
Ah Those Thoughtful Columbia, GA Code Enforcement Officers
Because if you don't hear them knock at the door, they'll even come inside and wake you up.
A woman got the shock of her life when she woke up to find a stranger in her bedroom, yelling at her to wake up because her grass was too long. Erica Masters was asleep when Columbia County Code Compliance Officer Jimmy Vowell entered her Martinez, Georgia, home without permission to serve a violation notice for her overgrown lawn. After knocking on the woman's door a few times, Vowell let himself and made his way into her bedroom, which was captured on surveillance video.
Ten Conspiracy Theories for Nerds
For the nerd-types who prefer smarter theories and less conspiracy involving <shudder> other human beings.
Of course the details don't really matter since this is all just a simulated universe where entities like you and I can imagine simulated universes. Oh and the NSA has had quantum computers since the late 70's. Computers capable of simulating smaller universes.
The Simulation Argument. This is legion in popular culture from "The Matrix" and "Inception" and other sci-fi, so we'll just refer you to Nick Bostrom's formulation of it. In theory we could tell the difference if something happened in the manner of The Truman Show where a light labeled "Sirius" falls from the sky. But are there any such events?
We offer one complexity-related observation. Although it is routine to say that classes like P and BQP have universal simulation, this isn't strictly true. The universal function for P doesn't belong to P - if it did, then P would be in some fixed polynomial time bound, which it isn't. Although proving this is technically murkier for "random" or "promise" classes like BQP the essential idea holds for any reasonable complexity class. Thus a universal simulation involves dropping down to a lower grade than the resources on which you draw. If our universe is convincingly universal, perhaps this is a well-motivated reason to reject the argument.
Heh: "You Got Laid Last Night? That's Nice, But . . .somebody else made that happen. Sport."
"If you are healthy, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great doctor somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American medical system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in bikepaths and broccoli. If you've got a healthy body - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. Cyclosporine didn't get invented on its own."
Getting Star Trek on the Air Was Impossible
From a series of letters between Isaac Asimov and Gene Roddenberry on the difficulties of creating an entertaining sci-fi tv series and trying to be scientifically accurate at the same time.
Quoting Ted Sturgeon who made his first script attempt with us (and now seems firmly established as a contributor to good television), getting Star Trek on the air was impossible, putting out a program like this on a TV budget is impossible, reaching the necessary mass audience without alienating the select SF audience is impossible, not succumbing to network pressure to "juvenilize" the show is impossible, keeping it on the air is impossible. We've done all of these things. Perhaps someone else could have done it better, but no one else did.
June, 1967Dear Isaac,
Wish you were out here.
I would dearly love to discuss with you a problem about the show and the format. It concerns Captain James Kirk and of course the actor who plays that role, William Shatner. Bill is a fine actor, has been in leads on Broadway, has done excellent motion pictures, is generally rated as fine an actor as we have in this country. But we're not getting the use of him that we should and it is not his fault. It's easy to give good situations and good lines to Spock. And to a lesser extent the same rule is true of the irascible Dr. McCoy. I guess it's something like doing a scene with several businessmen in a room with an Eskimo. The interesting and amusing situations, the clever lines, would tend to go to the Eskimo. Or in our case, the Eskimos.
And yet Star Trek needs a strong lead, an Earth lead. Without diminishing the importance of the secondary continuing characters. But the problem we generally find is this-if we play Kirk as a true ship commander, strong and hard, devoted to career and service, it too often makes him seem unlikable. On the other hand, if we play him too warm-hearted, friendly and so on, the attitude often is "how did a guy like that get to be a ship commander?" Sort of a damned if he does and damned if he doesn't situation. Actually, although it is missed by the general audience, it is Kirk's fine handling of a most difficult role that permits Spock and the others to come off as well as they do. But Kirk does deserve more and so does the actor who plays him. I am in something of a quandary about it.
Got any ideas?
Gene
Read the rest to see how Asimov resolved the Kirk/Spock plot quandry.

First World Problems: There's Now Plastic Surgery for Fat Toes
Because women don't have enough of a perfection complex in our culture, now comes the latest plastic surgery craze: toe-slimming surgery, for those with toe-bese phalanges. Apparently plastic surgeons are seeing a rise in people requesting toe-shortening and slimming procedures. Surgeon Oliver Zong says the operation was born out of patient requests.
...But ethical or no, people are doing it. People like E.R., who was stricken with an ultra-large big toe. "I always had issues with it," he said. "It was one of those things that you're just not comfortable with and try to hide it." So he had the toe shaved down.

Barack Obama was seated next to a little girl on an airplane trip back to Washington. He turned to her and said, "Let's talk. I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."
The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to The Obama, "What would you like to talk about?"
"Oh, I don't know," said the Obama. "How about What Changes I Should Make To America?" and he smiles.
"OK," she says. "That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?"
Obama, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it for a second and finally says, "Hmmm, I have no idea."
To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to change America when you don't know shit?"

There is a real dilemma in the black community. Obama is a failure and it is obvious. So what to do about it? The consensus is act like ti does not exist. The last thing middle class supposedly intelligent people want to talk about is Obama. Beyond the knee jerk "Republicans are out to get him." They DO NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. My good female friend, a lawyer, has never been to a public school, buried under student loans 5 years after law school, and the lasat thing she wants to talk about is Obama. Because there is nothing positive she can say.
I made a prediction to my coworker, black kid fresh out of college; it was this: As Obama tanks watch black people turn on him and he won't be black anymore. This was maybe 4 months ago. And we get Chris Rock, Tavis Smiley and Morgan "Right in the kisser" Freeman playing out that exact scenario.
I could easily see Obama slipping to 80-85 percent of the black vote nationally. This would be devastating to black democrats. Could be electoral game changing. So view this movie as an affirmation that prostrating yourself for Obama is the right thing to do.
*I'll bet Kat Williams has a come to Jesus moment in which he realizes the error of his Republican ways...

Greetings from South Central. Virginia.
For all you historically oriented war Morons. A strange but true blurb by Rabbi Daniel Lapin:
“Their horse cavalry, of which they had twelve brigades, charged valiantly against the swarming tanks and armored cars, but they could not harm them with their swords and lances.”
Thus did Winston Churchill describe Poland’s attempt to defend itself against the German invasion of September 1st, 1939. In his war memoirs, German general Heinz Guderian wrote, “The Polish… in ignorance of the nature of our tanks, had charged them with swords and lances and suffered tremendous losses.” In his 1959 novel, The Tin Drum, German novelist Gunther Grass likened the Polish horsemen’s doomed assault against a Germany Panzer division to Don Quixote’s hopeless idealism.
There’s only one problem—it never happened.
In reality, at 2:00 pm in the afternoon on the first day of World War II, the commander of the 18th Regiment of the Pomorska Cavalry Brigade, successfully attacked and overran a badly exposed battalion of German infantry near the Polish village of Krojanty. Suddenly German tanks appeared and began firing at the retreating Poles, most of whom were killed. The next day, the Germans brought war correspondents to the scene and told them that the Polish cavalrymen had charged the German tanks.
This was a falsehood preserved as truth. However, some truths eventually become thought of as false.
In times to come, people will assume that some of World War II history was fabricated. They will claim that it’s hard to believe that the ‘bad guys,’ Hitler, Stalin, and Molotov really had sinister-sounding names that mean ‘wolf’, ‘steel’ and ‘hammer’ respectively while France was led by a man, De Gaulle, whose name just coincidentally means ‘Of France’. England’s leader just happened to be a ‘Church-on-the-hill’ and America’s a ‘Field-of-Roses’ whose speeches were written for him by the rose-man, Samuel Rosenman.
LetÂ’s not forget that the hull of the ship of state was in the hands of Secretary of State, Cordell Hull and that the man who nourished the roses with money or morning dew (morgen thau in German) was Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau.
They will say that historians made up the name of the man who led the allied invasion from England to Normandy on D Day in 1944, Eisenhower. The general’s real name must have been lost in the mists of time so the literary academics decided to be poetic. One of the invading leaders of the Norman invasion of England in 1066 was Taillefer whose name means ‘Hewer of Iron’. Improvising a name for the World War II leader, they simply translated Hewer of Iron into German and got, yes, Eisenhower.
So it just happened that back in the 20th century, the bad guys all had malevolent names and the good guys all had benign ones? Puh-leez.
That these things are all true, challenges rational belief. Yet they are true.

I want to know to what extent they understand that the MSM, in the age of Obama, has moved from simple partisan bias to active collusion.
The template has been set, Obama will launch an attack of the week, and in coordination the MSM will demand that Romney answer the "serious and troubling questions that have been raised."
Anyone who discounts the power and influence of this wholly corrupt MSM on an ignorant and easily manipulated populace is a fool.
I truly hope the Romney camp knows their enemy, the last couple of weeks haven't been reassuring.

I could send them to the recruiter that placed me. So I sent him an email essentially asking if they give a referral fee - and the answer was essentially yes, how much do you want.
I know how much various companies will pay for internal referrals in my field, usually $1-2k. I know that recruiters normally get a fraction of the first year's salary with in software development is usually 60-100k for the people I'd be sending to him.

They completely miss the point that Obama was actually elected because a lot of "independents" apparently were affected by Obama in the same way the hero of this tale was.
And also because of at least a smidgeon of white guilt.
Top it all off with a few diehard who refused to vote for Mr RINO himself and voila'; instant karma puts a turd in the White House.
The only good thing that I can find to say about this movie is that at least they acknowledge that there's such a being as a Black Republican.
Maybe it will give some Blacks something to think about.

"Unfortunately that is a losing strategy when the media keeps pounding the "cloud hanging over Romney's tax returns," and Obama transcripts fom Occidental and Columbia registers a yawn from 0.02 of the population."
Fewer and fewer are buying what the media is selling.
It's a wonderful chance to use the left's more potent weapons they've had a monopoly on until recently - ridicule. "I'll release my tax returns as soon as The Most Transparent Presidency Ever releases his academic records. If he can't release those basic records, how will we ever get to the bottom of hundreds of dead Mexicans and a slain border patrol agent? How can we ever expect true transparency? What else has he hidden from the American people?"
It won't be a huge tactical victory, but it will be one more thing to make Obama react to and one more chink in his armor.
Was that racist?
Posted by: Burn the Witch at July 17, 2012 08:07 PM (rX1N2)
Sure about that? I'd love to see the documents and reveal he's a fucking fraud. But what happens when we don't get to see that? Then he'll likely get to point to whatever bs therein (or changed to include/exclude) and say see, nothing to see here. Just these crazy right wing racists looking to prove the first black president isn't smart enough. Or scammed the system by claiming he was a foreign student. Or blah blah blah.
Then the MSM will pull their faces out of his lap long enough to echo that once again (like the "birth certificate") these documents show what Obama says. See isn't he soooo truthful! Nothing to fear from him once again.
Then what?

This is why leftist push for things like the motor voter law. They want everybody who can fog a mirror to cast a ballot. (They'll take care of the post-living voters on their own.) It has long been common for operatives of DNC candidates to cruise around skid row and hand out money to anyone who get in their bus and vote the way they're told.
Nancy Pelosi's father was big on this sort of thing. You can bet she is dead set against anything that might eliminate a person from casting a vote or three.

Women are fainting at his rallies, still, but I'm probably not too lonely in believing that these are preconceived theatrical gestures, whether planned in the campaign, or hatched in the quivering belly of some follower who still believes, or wants to think she does.
His crowds are remarkably tiny, and his increasingly whiny pleas for money smack of the sort of dude that no self-respecting woman would want to date. He looks like a loser.
The thing is falling apart, and not a moment too soon. This movie may be treasured someday, as a documentary of the last wheezing gasp of a dying cult.

Self-esteem is really important. But you don't get it by being praised undeservedly. The best definition I've seen is that (real) self-esteem is "the reputation you get with yourself."

It seems to me that while the media was in the tank for the Democrats since at least 1962, they've gotten extremely more so since the arrival of the new media blew their monopoly completely out of the water.
Now, faced with a real competitor for control of the public's understanding of events, they've gone overboard to the left, furiously trying to control events and politics to their liking because they think they have to in order to counter Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and those damnable blogs.
In the process they're ripping off the mask like Horatio Caine's stupid sunglasses and its ugly underneath.

And , of course, we all benefit from infrastructure paid for (but not designed, not constructed) by government. So why do some become successful and others not?
Then there's Henry Ford: he created a mass-production line for cars that preceded the roads needed to carry them. More cars, THEN more and better roads.
So...government infrastructure not a necessary condition...not a sufficient condition. Ergo content-free bloviation for political effect -- by the Blue-Lipped Princeling with almost ZERO experience in the private sector.

I kept MS-DOS till 2002. (I have the DOS DukeNukem3D user created files to prove it).
I didn't put Win 3.1 on until about '97 and that was really just a shell.
Went Win 98 in 2003 cause I need some hardware and none of it would work with DOS.
Went Win XP when I bought a Dell in 2003 and 2005 and that's IT until I'm satisfied that Win 8 is the fixed version of the latest OS attempt. Or until all of my 3 computers die.
Then I'll have to buy one with it installed.
And yes, I can still remember how to create and trouble shoot a .bat file.

Keep it up with the occasional reference to the theme "Cops Gone Wild'. This is a way underexposed problem in the US and it will only get worse. The SC is part of the problem here, finding justifications for dog searches of cars, Border Patrol searches of electronic records such as on phones and laptops, no knock warrants, secret warrants and warrantless searches, etc.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Yeah that sounds real ambiguous to me. Shucks, I can find all kind of exceptions in that wording if I've got shit for brains.
Good evening, all.

I KNOW!
Last time I ran a scan there was something over 40,000 files on this thing. ?!!!!!!!
What happened is that after the price of memory dropped and a processor that could handle protected memory came out, programmers got laaaaaazzzzzzy and instead of fine tuning their code and making it small and fast, they threw stuff in .dll's and then put them all over the place.
MS led the way with some of the slowest largest code ever written in win '95. 3rd party software makers just followed suit.
It got worse when the registry came to the fore and then they could put shit ANYWHERE and the program could find it.
Ah well. Those were the days. 640k memory and 20meg hard drives. Hard resets cause some subroutine hung and couldn't return.
.com and .exe files of 30k's or less still the speed's the same as they were fast only because they were small now even though they're huge, the processors are faster and the memory is faster. I've got 4gig ram and it blazes.
I had an xt once that only had a 10 meg hard drive and it was slower than snail shit.
I don't miss it one bit. Except I could build my own programs from scratch without buying a $200 Editing suite.

That is a sloppy developer problem. Plenty of apps mind their business and keep themselves to themselves.
Microsoft has made major changes in the post-XP releases to offer better segregation of user data from apps. A system that had only compliant apps on it could back up a user just by copying their entry in the Users folder and copying it back when the machine is restored. (This is an area where Unix and derivatives have long had the advantage, although some versions got fancy and screwed it up.)
You may have noticed that post-XP Windows versions have a Program Data directory, separate from Program Files. This is to encourage the preferred practice of keeping files subject to change in a separate area from those that remain static once installed. This makes it easier to defend against malware by making larger areas subject to rapid testing for conformance to checksums and other measures.
The infrastructure is there but unless you want to go completely to the walled garden approach where all software has to pass through a central authority for approval on following the guidelines, it is really hard to get everybody to follow the rules. One of top items that caused existing software to break under Vista and later is the protections added to the registry. Third party developers had been completely ignoring the rules laid down long ago and Microsoft got tired of being blamed for when things got broken by these bad apps. (Quicken and QuickBooks were huge offenders in this area.) The real blame for Microsoft was in not being more hard-assed about this a decade earlier but the long prevailing policy was to let ISVs do what they wanted.
One of the other big items was companies still using 16-bit installers on their latest versions. 16-bit support went away and these dumb shits had the nerve to act surprised. It had only been announced three years in advance.

Well, maybe it takes an SOB who's not bound by the polite struggle to remain politically correct to investigate such a concern. Folks have been so afraid of being labeled a loon for even entertaining a "what if" that nobody but the most bold will take it on. Is it for publicity? Perhaps. But there's apparently enough weight behind the allegations that Florida is looking into them.
