History's Bloodiest Wars And Who To Blame

From our own beloved pixy.

Rank Name Aggressor Victim How Many
1 World War II Germany, Japan,
sundry others
best forgotten
Everyone else 40 million+
2 An Lushan Rebellion China China 33 million*
3 Mongol Invasions Mongols Everyone else 30 million**
4 Yuan Dynasty Collapse China China 30 million
5 Ming Dynasty China China 25 million
6 Taiping Rebellion China China 20 million
7 World War I Germany,
Austria-Hungary,
Ottoman Empire,
Influenza Virus
Everyone else 15-65 million
8 Tamerlane's Conquests Tamerlane Human decency 15 million
9 Dungan Revolt China China 8 million
10 Russian Revolution Filthy Commies Anastasia,

policy
5 million

Looking at this table I'm thinking that China has been just a little too quiet for a little too long. And if Lewis Richardson got it right, we are getting near the statistical due date for a 109 death conflict.

Retirement Ages

Note that these are the 'official' retirement ages. But often government workers, members of certain unions or anyone deemed in a 'hazardous' occupation (such as hairdressers in Greece) are allowed to retire at 50.

Firing For Questioning Stolen Valor

You may have heard of the recent Alvarez supreme court decision but here is the sordid dénouement to the original case:

On a tour bus trip to Southern California Edison's Big Creek power plant, event planner Melissa Campbell was passing out snacks to dignitaries when one of them asked her a question that would change both of their lives and make U.S. judicial history.

"Do you know who I am?" asked Xavier Alvarez, an elected member of a local water board, not waiting for an answer.

"I am a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient."

But of course it turns out that Alvarez was never even in the military much less a recipient of the medal of honor. And this made Campbell mad enough to confront him.

Less attention has been paid to the fate of the woman who helped expose Mr. Alvarez and who brought him to the attention of the FBI. Ms. Campbell, the event planner serving Mr. Alvarez snacks on June 27, 2007, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served her country for 10 years.

...By the time the investigation into Mr. Alvarez was under way, Ms. Campbell had other concerns. Days after the trip to Big Creek, she said, she was suspended by the company and told that it was unprofessional to confront Mr. Alvarez.

One supervisor said, "I don't understand why you made such a big deal. You're not even a Marine anymore," Ms. Campbell recalled.

"Do you understand what they do to earn their awards?" Ms. Campbell replied.

Suspended from her job, Ms. Campbell said she later got a phone call from the company asking her to attend a meeting. When she walked into the office, she said, she saw boxes full of her belongings.

It was official, she said - she'd been fired.

Well I guess no modern legal story is complete until the guilty have gone free and the virtuous are punished.

Well Woody's 1941 version may be more folk-authentic, but I think the Animals 1965 version has more passion and is just plain better.

Reclaiming China's Photographs

Almost no photographs from before 1970 exist in China. Why? Cultural Revolution and a communist police state that's why.

China's photographic record begins only in the 1970s because nearly all earlier pictures were destroyed. The ones that survived are mostly outside China, and a major effort is now under way to bring them together online, says the BBC's Mary Ward-Lowery.

Any government that deliberately tries to destroy memories of the past is pretty much guaranteed to turn a country into bloody hellhole.

The One Food Item You Shouldn't Order According to Fast Food Workers

  • Fast food ice. This seems to be recurring as it is difficult to keep the machines clean and mold free. There have been studies and articles regarding this issue. Added We tend not to think about soft drink machines, how often they're cleaned and the amount of calories in the drinks themselves.

  • Unconventional pizza toppings or menu items seem to be a popular concern among the employed. I can attest to this personally in regard to topping meats and certain specialty items.

18 And if Lewis Richardson got it right, we are getting near the due date for a 109 death conflict. Yep and our own SCoaMF CinC certainly is contributing to that possibility. With all the chaos occurring in the ME right now, God only knows how long it will be until Islamists get enough of a chem/bio/nuclear arsenal to launch the Third (and final?) Jihad. Also, China is *too* quiet. Mark Steyn said it the best when he wrote that the most opportune time for conflict is when it is no longer clear who is in charge. With both China and Russia (and their various allies) looking to bring down America a few pegs, with China and Russia both planning for a world where the US is very limited abroad, the next couple decades look worrisome in the conflict department.

A man applying for a job with Customs and Border Patrol allegedly revealed that he had previously molested a two-year-old girl and committed bestiality during an interview. Cody Slaughter, 22, of Somerton, Arizona, was arrested after the admission to officials on July 2.

Customs and Border Patrol agents told the Yuma County Sheriff's Office that Slaughter had confessed to molesting a two-year-old girl when he was 14 during a pre-employment interview. He said he abused the little girl on one occasion but also admitted to having sexual interactions with a pig, a dog and a horse between 2004 and 2012 and having a history of drug abuse.

Slaughter's admission came after interviewers asked him a standard question about whether he had committed any unreported criminal acts.

45 I really don't understand cultures that don't value their children. They seem to be the ones that are open to genocide of various types more often than any other cultures. The Chinese [if it ain't a boy, kill it] and the Russians [we ran out of food so the baby went without] and even the Indians [dot not feather] tend to assume babies are pretty much on their own. If they live, so much the better, but if not... And eventually that disregard for life leads to the big stuff. That is one reason to fear the pro-abortion folks. The age of accommodation seems to rise every few years with them, and eventually it will be okay to perform retroactive abortions as well.

Unfortunately most of the genocide action in the last 20 years is happening in Africa.  In the 70's and 80's it was Indo-china with the killing fields of Cambodia and Kampuchea.

China's one child policy with preference for sons has resulted in millions of young Chinese men who will never have a girlfriend

Several countries over there have a skewed male/female ratio - India and Pakistan among them, I believe.

Lots of males with no prospects for wives - the weak ones will be  turned into cannon fodder, no  doubt.

I've found the OS more intuitive...another cliche...but when I've hit the "how do you do X" question, a quick Google search has tended to get me right back on track. The thing I like the most is that for the most part the OS takes fewer "clicks" to do what I want without pop-ups asking me it that's what I really want to do. I also like how it freaks me out when I download a program on my iPhone and it shows up on my iPad...and when I turn on Apple TV I can play everything from my other devices, the painless connections between all my Apple items without trying to find the right drivers and multiple screens of clicking this and downloading that are a dream come true.

Peugots are nice little cars, if you live in France and have a mechanic that can fix them.

Things you notice when you travel.

You will see BMW's, Mercedes Benzes, Audis, VW's,  Hondas,Toyotas, Nissans, Lexus and Infinitis everywhere in the world (including Beijing).  You will rarely see a Peugot outside of France, and that even means other parts of  Western Europe.

I even saw  Chrysler cars in Paris  ( a Viper and a PT Cruiser were at a light together) .  But you won't see a Renault or Peugot in the US, hardly at all. Ever.

146 Leftists who hate Israel can rejoice; their efforts at securing the release of a Gitmo detainee and their subsequent lionizing of him allowed him to murder five Israelis in the bombing Wednesday in Burgas, Bulgarian. The bomber has been identified as Mehdi Ghezali, who was detained at Gitmo Bay in Cuba from 2002 to 2004. According to Wikileaks documents, Ghazali was “uncooperative, unforthcoming and deceptive during interrogations.” His father had met with Abdolrahman Barzanjee, an Al Qaeda associate and possible Ansar Al-Islam coordinator for Europe (Ansar Al-Islam is a group of Sunni Muslims trying to turn Iraq into an Islamist state), and Ghazali was friends with a Swedish operative who was a close associate of Abu Zubadayah, a high-ranking official with Al Qaeda. Ghazali, who was a Swedish citizen, was visited by members of the Swedish government frequently while he was in custody at Gitmo, and the Swedish media played up his incarceration. While Ghezali was detained at Gitmo, he was featured in the documentary Gitmo – The New Rules of War, a film that savaged Guantanamo Bay detention camp by film directors Erik Gandini and Tarik Saleh. In February of 2004, Ghazali was reassessed and regarded as an enemy combatant who had gone to Afghanistan to support the Taliban, but although Gitmo concluded that he was a “medium risk, as he may possibly pose a threat to the US its interests and allies,” the decision to release him to Sweden followed: “Recommendation: JTF Gitmo recommends that this detainee be transferred to the control of another country for continued detention.” He was released to Sweden on July 8, 2004. And guess how much he meant to the Swedish? He was flown home to Sweden by the Swedish Air Force on a Gulfstream IV jet, at the expense of the Swedish government. Ghazali joined a July 4, 2006 demonstration held outside the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden calling for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay facility. But the liberal Swedes weren’t done with nurturing Ghazali yet. He was arrested in September of 2009 in Punjab, Pakistan, on suspicions of having ties to al-Qaeda; Pakistani police chief Mohammad Rizwan described Ghezali as "a very dangerous man". But the Swedish newspaper The Local described his actions as "a harmless meeting with a Muslim revivalist movement, Tablighi Jamaat." One month later, Ghezali was released to Sweden. The Swedish Ambassador even accompanied him on the flight home. With all the help Ghezali received from the liberal media and liberal governments, it’s obvious they have blood on their hands. But the blood is Israeli, so don’t expect the Left to shed a single tear. This should make a good thread tomorrow

The return key is your friend.

1) To avoid weird formatting (eg. breaks in the middle of a line and hidden HTML code) copy everything into MS notepad first, clean up any unwanted line breaks and then cut or copy it from there into the comment box.

2) For italics, bold, strike through and underline, do a search for BBCode and follow the instructions. Use brackets: [ ] instead of sideways carets: < >. Italics, bold, strike through and underline are the only codes accepted here. The commands for them are i, b, s and u, respectively.

3) The URL box (above the comments box) will accept just about any URL except TinyUrls. It probably will kick out other shortened URLs too, however, because I've never tried any other shortened URLs in the box I really don't know. Anything in the URL box that contains HTML coding will be rejected.

4) The name box will only accept names, do not try using HTML code in it.

My portable before that was a PC Club - about the same. .... About 5 years ago I figured that about 1000 was where you were starting to get vanity pricing kicking in. Here's another story about Elvis.  My Aunt from Mississippi went to see him in concert in about 1973.  Somehow she managed to get front row tickets.  During the concerts he approached some women in the front row, embraced them, and kissed them in the mouth.  My Aunt was one of them.  He took a scarf she was wearing off and put it around his neck, and gave her a blue scarf he was wearing.  He then gave her back her scarf but let her keep his.

She told two girlfriends about this and they begged her to let them borrow the scarf.  My Aunt then showed me the scarf.  I looked at it and it had a square piece cut out of the corner.  I asked her why that was.  She said that when the two girls gave her back the scarf, it had a piece bitten out of it.

From the local dog catcher up to the Premier, corruption isn't just a part of the job, its the job description. It has been a strict part of their culture for thousands of years, its simply expected. 239 Posted by: acme shelving unit at July 19, 2012 11:53 PM (xotMI) While China is working on having a blue water Navy, they are very far from that having those capabilities. China has never (until now) focused their priorities into forming a competent Navy. They'd be hard pressed to take Taiwan now by force even without the US Naval presence there. Doesn't mean the Chi-Coms aren't a potential threat, but we don't have to worry about them making beachheads on the Left Coast..yet.

258 Big change with China will be when they surpass as the largest economy on the planet. That will happen and sooner than most think. And it won't stop at parity. By 2050 China will likely have 2x the GDP of the US. I expect we'll abandon Taiwan at some point in the next few decades. China will surpass in the 2020s, right as the Reagan naval build-up ages out of the fleet. The Navy already calls the 2020s the Terrible 20s because there is no way to pay for all the ships we need just to maintain the fleet. I expect China to start funding Hawaiian separatist groups. They'll team with leftists and NGOs demanding Hawaii is declared a tribe like the Navajo and Hawaii is made an independent, sovereign nation.

319 I know we're just having fun here acme but do a little study sometime on the number of firearms owners in this country. And the billions (yes, with a b) of rounds of ammo in private hands. And a lot of those folks are veterans to boot. Then ask yourself if you want to, with your AK, go up against a lot of men that are gonna start taking you out at 400+ yards. Hey I'm getting old so my eyes aren't so good. Start grabbing their puny little scoped "black rifles" inside of 300 and well...you get the picture.

Now, I'll buy that you don't care for the man, and he certainly is wealthy but... destroy democracy? Upon what possible basis does someone come up with that?
I didn't bother reminding the guy that the Obamas are rich too, or note that Mrs Romney said 'you people' to the news media. He wouldn't even care.
I just thought that was such a bizarre fear of Romney, given the president we now are suffering under. I mean if you're going to oppose the guy, at least come up with something sane and plausible.

China has always been certain they can beat the US, and everyone else on earth. It getting that tiger moving that's the hard part. They could barely muster an invasion of Korea. The big reason China hasn't dominated the world is that culturally it is incredibly regressive and passive. “Fifty-Cents” ???

Because Jay Cutler is only good for 2 quarters

The Chicago Bears signed Jay Cutler to a two-year extension. Or 100 fourth-quarter interceptions, whichever comes first.

Whats the only thing Jay Cutler can throw?

A tantrum

397 Gee. It got busy all of a sudden. I guess dinner is over on the West Coast.

Goodnight, Hexagon Fan. And, actually, we use a 3" hexagon grid for our 25mm figures to get rid of the rulers so there's no excuse for you not converting to white metal.

There are several web sites that have paper soldiers, Oldcat, although not as fancy/realistic as 19th Century lithographed paper soldiers.

And I've forgotten the game name (it's a newish one) that I think is only various Eastern Front scenarios so far but it has a hex map or multiple sections that have wargaming type terrain indicated on it and you use counters on them the same way you'd use metal or plastic figures.

There are also several figure companies now that produce 28mm 1/56 hard plastic figures that are relatively inexpensive and don't have the painting problems that soft plastic like the old Airfix 1/72 figures had.

415 re carriers, I think the very nature of warfare is changing quickly. Note that we are using underwater drones in the Persian Gulf right now. Also, I saw pretty recently that the Navy is reconsidering their purchase of F35s and leaning more towards lots of air drones instead. Now, maybe that is being driven by the big budget cuts (sequestration) coming to defense, but smart drones are the future (think Skynet).

418 "Taking your baseball loving 15 year old son to a professional baseball game...Awesome."
You are truly a great parent.
There is really nothing quite like walking out into the stands for a baseball game. You pass through those brutal concrete tunnels and steps, past the vendors and overpriced food, hearing echoes of footsteps, and then... you step out of the tunnel. The sound of the park, the smells of the peanuts and popcorn and beer wash over you, the almost impossible green of the field and stark bright white of the lines washes over your eyes. Its simply wonderful.
And if its a minor league game, there are no bad seats. I've never yet gone to a minor league game that was anything but a wonderful time.

Is it out of line to request that they sort out the intra-religionary issues re: Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Salafi, etc. before moving on to killing the non-believers?  That should satisfy the "billion dead" mark that has been predicted while allowing civiliation to continue apace, as there is little that the modern muslim world contributes to societal advancement in general.  I'm being generous with the "little" part.  Where should the JDAMs requests be sent to reach those with maximum influence?

There were many problems with the Stolen Valor Act -- among them, that valor can never be stolen....merely pretended. It also erred by going after the speech, which the SCOTUS rightfully declared as protected. Instead, the Pretended Valor Act should have focused on the results of such pretending -- (1) Any benefit granted to someone who falsely self-identifies as a current or former vet constitutes fraud, and can be reclaimed threefold by the grantor; (2) All injuries suffered by such a fraudster at the hands of actual current or former vets are hereby declared as "accidentally falling down the stairs" -- regardless of whether there were any actual stairs in the vicinity.

He was better than the hell of Kyle Boller, and probably still is better than the junk they played there before. He's not a team leader though. Bengals found that out. So he will get the offense going, and also give the defense some chances to hurt them back. Job is having the offense be able to overcome the mistakes.

Think about John F'ing Kerry and his bullshit "throwing medals over the White House fence" story. That's free speech.....and he should be called on it and ridiculed thoroughly. Or Sandra Fluke being an expert on female exploitation. The world is full of bullshit, but the government does a lousy job at sorting "truth" from lies.

So, let them stick to their core competency -- process. Let people say, "he said he was a vet so I bought him a beer, then I found out otherwise" and get three beers with the public humiliation of of the attendant mockery.....and if the guy bumps into a couple of vets on his way out the door, trips over a shoelace and falls into a dumpster....c'est la vie. A couple of such interludes would surely educate such a blowhard as to the virtues of silence.

No right of free speech exists which supersedes this sovereign right.

But the "Constitutional" issue is the same.

If you can lie that the government gave you a CMOH, you can lie that the government gave you a badge.

Now, if you attempt to physically arrest someone, that is certainky different - touching someone is rather a different matter then making a statement. But lying that you are a cop and getting people to do things solely because you lied about it should be just as protected as lying about your status as a veteran.

Either the Constitution allows no restrictions on clear, factual lies about your status with the government or it allows any restrictions on such clear, factual lies. It does not ban some and allow some others others.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,

There is no special exception for cops.

I think it's wrong and pathetic but I don't agree. Lying is as old as the human race, but with a nation that allows lying so long as it does not infringe upon the rights of a free people is quite common. Not defending it, but it happens everyday without consequence. (See Obama and the media.) I remarked to my buddy that the only thing she needed to be perfect was red hair.

The next time I saw her, she sported a mane of auburn locks. I found out soon after that she could put her feet behind her head.

And yeah. It was all that.

Six months later it was over and I still don't quite know why, but I suspect it was my fault. Freshly seperated/divorced men do not make good companions.

If she's fat and gray with ten kids now I don't want to know about it, because in my mind she is still just as perfect now as she was then.

I never disagreed with the freedom of expression ends when it harms the right of others. That's the biggest point of the argument. You can say to anyone that you were the biggest war hero of WW2, but if you claimed to be Audie Murphy then you can go to jail. There's the distinction, unless you make a false claim on a job app or legal document that you were awarded something you weren't. Whether you like it or not, our Constitution protects fucking assholes so long as the fucking assholes don't say they are someone else or sign/lie on a document that prohibits them from lying.

You don't so long as you don't assume an identity that is not yours. CMOH recipients are listed as public information. If my name is Fred Smith and I'm a lying shitweasel and claim to be on that list and it is proven that I'm not on that list, then Fred Smith should get his ass kicked as a fucking liar. But what crime did he commit? He didn't say he was an actual CMOH recipient and assume the actual recipient's identity. Or Purple Hearts for that matter. All Purple Heart recipients are public record as well I believe.

Here is Maine's law for example;
§457. Impersonating a public servant 1.    A person is guilty of impersonating a public servant if he falsely pretends to be a public servant and engages in any conduct in that capacity with the intent to deceive anyone. 2.    It is no defense to a prosecution under this section that the office the person pretended to hold did not in fact exist. 3.    Impersonating a public servant is a Class E crime.

I even had a conversation with a VA rep who told me that I should be applying for benefits, and I told her that I was a peacetime Vet and that in my opinion those benefits should be reserved for combat Vets. I have never asked the VA for anything and I'm proud of that. But I would do anything in my power to get a combat Vet to seek assistance with the VA if that is what they want.

We keep forgetting that dueling was legal and an accepted practice when the Constitution was written.  If someone called them on a pathetic lie like "I won the Silver Star and was a SEAL in the Army," they could be challenged to a duel.  Now, if you so much as muss the lying bastard's hair, much less drop him down the stairs, you will likely go to jail.

The law throughout the country, as for example Maine's law, makes it illegal to claim to be a cop (or many other types of officials) by sheer nature of making the claim with the intent to deceive, again read Maine's law. That's it - you don't need anything more then a false claim that is intended to deceive.

Now the SC is claiming that the government can throw you in jail for claiming you have a badge (and people are indeed arrested solely for claiming to be a cop), but not for claiming you have a medal.

The legislature has the power to make that distinction, the courts do not.

Actually, I'd love to see a elected official with some balls just start arresting these medal claimers under the pre-existing laws. Make medal holders a class of unpaid, permanent government official. Dare the 5 leftists in the SC to take their ruling to its ultimate conclusion.

589 Fears of a Chinese naval war are looking at it the wrong way.  China's navy will be used in conjunction with shore based planes and missiles to keep the US Navy at bay, but won't try and engage us in a pitched battle.

If I were the Chinese, my goal would be to build up my influence in key areas of the world, with an eye to eventually placing planes and anti ship missiles where they can disrupt the ability of the US Navy to respond quickly to a crisis.

I still believe that the Chinese will try to expand into Central Asia.  The resources available have to be tempting, and it's a lot easier to move a million man army across the mountains than it is to try and float it to Taiwan.  In this case, Chinese troops and equipment based in Africa and elsewhere would act as sacrificial stones, used to force the US to respond away from the main Chinese goal.

That is irrelevant.

If freedom of speech includes the right to falsely claim to have a government issued citation, it also includes the right to falsely claim to have a government issued badge. If people act in the way you want them to based on your lie, well, apparently tough luck for them in the Roberts-era.

There is no text in the Constitution, or anywhere else in the documents of the founders' era that supports such a bizarrely limited exception to the actual text.

Now, the legislature can certainly distinguish between the two types of lies if it chooses. And it did. And the Supreme Court then superseded their law with its own.

Well for the libertarians of the bunch. Yes having a military award has a value, that in fact belongs to the US govt, and that using it without their permission devalues it, and is therefore an abridgment of the governments rights. The othe side is, why do they want it to have value? So that they can give permission to use it to those that they deem have earned, so that those individuals may enjoy its rewards and values. This all lies within the Constitution. I don't understand why some folks don't understand why distinctive markings (TM) are off limmits.

Didn't the Supremes decide on this issue and that is what everyone is pissed about? The US Supreme court has jurisprudence over any California law if they decide to take it into consideration. And, I might add, a guy bragging to a girl in a bar that he is a cop is very hard to prove versus a guy using his car with cop lights to pull over the same girl to rape her. Granted the rape is a felony and the guy bragging is a misdemeanor in California, but there is a huge difference. I'm sure that there is some ordinance in California somewhere that doesn't allow you to smoke in your apartment, but again it is a misdemeanor and highly unlikely to make it to the Supreme Court.

Having a badge.

Which is not in any way constitutionally different from claiming to have medal.

Nothing about government office holders having a special status.

Oh come on now, the only reason the Stolen Valor case went to the SC is that the left wants to further shit on veterans.

There is no serious constitutional issue at stake, and up until the modern era would have been laughed out of the courts (and the fake veterans tarred and feathered).

611 Well for the libertarians of the bunch. Yes having a military award has a value, that in fact belongs to the US govt, and that using it without their permission devalues it, and is therefore an abridgment of the governments rights.

You keep asserting that military awards  belong to the government but I just don't see how that is true.

Certainly the physical medals would belong to the individual. And the ability to state truthfully that they received a specific award during their military service would also belong to that individual.

If they *do* belong to the government, certainly that would be apparent by some kind of control they have over the awards after they're handed out. But I don't see any evidence of that.

I am not technically a civilian. I am on inactive fleet reserve (COMNAVFLTRES), and as such can be recalled any time the USN thinks they need me.  They probably won't ever do it, but theoretically they could.

Circular reasoning. It's also possible that the rules haven't been enforced because the government doesn't own the awards.

One case in point is the US Flag Code. It's a full law that specifies the display and destruction of US flags. But it's not enforceable since there's no penalty for violating it.

And that, inevitably as it was going to be, is a fail.

A Silver Star award, or a CMH for that matter, does not predate intellectual property law, chief. Neither does any other award granted by the United States. That is a feeble attempt to conflate the CONCEPT of a military honor with ACTUAL modern military honors. Fail.

Secondly, "award" by its very nature, is an earning, or a gift in recognition of service, or act. There are no strings attached, akin to taxes owed on a "winning", or property right incombrance associated with a "lending". Fail.

No medals awarded by the United States government to military members has a "Property of the U.S. Government" declaration on them, and the certificates that accompany them, IN EVERY CASE, clearly grant the award solely and completely to the awarded. Fail.

Your argument......seems legit.

Hey, there have been some female Robins. Frank Miller had one in The Dark Knight Returns, and she'd become a new Catwoman in the sequel.

In the regular comics continuity, before the recent reboot of the DC Universe, a character named Stephanie Brown was Robin briefly and later Batgirl, after the scary third one quit. (Barbara Gordon from the 60s TV show was the second.) I'm not sure if she still exists post-reboot.

682 I've had to check out for a while and realize you people don't know me from Adam but I have to get something off my puny chest.

Dad almost died last night or I should say very early this morning because my stupid ass mother fucker of a 26 year old brother who was insisting on Dad coming home yesterday from the mid term care facility couldn't take the time to figure out that Dad was choking to death on his trachea tube. Kid sleeps 14 - 18 hours a day and constantly complains about how tired he is. My husband had a come to Jesus meeting with my aunt today over how mollycoddled the kid is and he may be out on the street here really soon with his college funding cut off. Then he had the temerity this evening after he managed to get his fat ass out of bed to blame my aunt because "she didn't tell him how bad off Dad was". Kid gets into the kitchen and cooks without ever cleaning up after himself. While we were over there I spent over an hour scrubbing and doing dishes so my aunt wouldn't have to do it while simultaneously trying to keep an eye on Dad. I'm not in the best of health myself but I cook, bake and clean. That's about all I can do. My aunt did crack me up when she started flinging my brother's kitchen shit into a big plastic tote. We are moving in with aunt and Dad as soon as we finish getting the farm cleared out (HA!). She basically told me today "screw your brother - take what you want, pack it up for yourselves and put the rest in storage".

Currently Masjid Abu-Bakr is completing the final stages of its multi-million dollar expansion, thus doubling the size of its prayer facilities.

Looking back at the history of violent film presentations, pretty low.

I mentioned the Warriors earlier. That was a movie that gained a reputation for outbreaks of violence in the audience. Some others like Boyz in the Hood had incidents. But in general there hasn't been a lot of problems at action movies. And this situation goes far, far beyond anything I've ever heard of in association with a theatrical presentation.

731 I doubt it's just a nutter like Loughner. This was not a spontaneous decision. There was a lot of gathering of gear and planning in this case. That takes a certain level of rationality, well in excess of what Loughner exercised.

It will be a couple days at least before we really know. did this guy have any online presences? If so, that is going to get scrutinized down to every word.

Gang activity doesn't seem likely. Terrorism appears the most likely with the big question mark being whether it's the usual suspects or a Coast to Coast AM listener with a view of the world known to nobody but him.

One thing that gang bangers dont care who gets killed in a shootout, but they usually doesnt target ordinary people in groups.

735 News is saying they got Obama out of bed to brief him on the situation. Which also makes gang activity appear less likely. The President would be expected to have some comment on a big story like this but is it to be considered a possible national security issue?

Don't know.  Went to Denver Post story and read comments.  Not gang related, apparently Aurora is an affluent suburb.  Some people are blaming the NRA.  Most the dead and wounded are assumed to be teenagers.

I would think if the shooter was someone who fasted, they would have exploded themself too.  Except Major Hassan didn't.

Pray for the families.

Posted by: AmishDude at July 20, 2012 03:09 AM (T0NGe)

742

I know there will be lots of keening about guns and movie violence, but this particular movie has attracted a lot of controversy.  Reviewers were getting such violent, threatening emails, Rotten Tomatoes actually closed comments for this movie, something they almost never do.  And isn't the buzz that it's very anti-OWS and blatantly conservative?  Not that it necessarily IS - people slap these simplistic labels on anything, but my first thought was that this could be an OWS supporter "teaching us a lesson" for getting out of line.

Yeah, I was wondering about that.

Weird to think this could affect the election depending on how the narrative gets played. Which means we know what to expect from the MSM. But the level of attention is going to be such that they won't be able to bury it if it was a leftist behind this.

Its still illegal, as far as I know, to impersonate a soldier. This ruling only allows claiming awards you didn't earn.
