On Obama's You Didn't Build It Quote
That brings me back to the creepiness of it all. It is as if a Dutch politician-an intelligent, well-meaning Dutch politician-were somehow running for the American presidency, but bringing with him the Rawlsian, social-democratic ethos that, in the Netherlands, is the natural way to talk about a properly run society. We would listen to him and say to ourselves, "He doesn't get this country." That's the thing about Obama. Time and again, he does things and says things that are un-American. Not evil. Not anti-American. Just un-American.
Back in 2008 I kept pointing out to family and friends that given Obama's foreign background, Hawaiian childhood, and education and job experience he was profoundly out of touch with how middle America actually lives. And nothing since then has made me think any different.
And Was Obama's Quote a 'Gaffe'?
Nope - here's was what he was saying back in 1995 when he was a community organizer about to run for office:
In America we have this strong bias toward individual action. You know, we idolize the John Wayne hero who comes in to correct things with both guns blazing. But individual actions, individual dreams, are not sufficient. We must unite in collective action, build collective institutions and organizations.
Plus this:
Every Obama Speech in One Paragraph
Thanks to Peter Kirsanow of NRO:
If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen because you've been a little lazy over the last couple of decades and you've lost your ambition, your imagination and your willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge, causing you to become bitter and cling to guns and religion and antipathy toward people who aren't like you, and to act stupidly, just like a typical white person or our troops who are just air-raiding villages and killing civilians. Frankly, that's why I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism, and that's why it's necessary for me to fundamentally transform America and spread the wealth around - just as soon as I get more flexibility in a second term.
"Overpopulation" and Population Density
The world only looks overcrowded if you live in a major metropolitan area. America, for instance, may look overcrowded if you live in New York or Los Angeles, but the view from Montana is quite different.
...There's no real point to this-it's a rhetorical exercise. But it highlights pretty nicely how uncrowded the world is. There are other arguments against population growth, but overcrowding isn't one of them.
Apollo 11 Flight Director Gene Krantz: "How To Park On The Moon"
Gene Krantz: The "1201? and "1202? were two program alarms we learned about in our final day of training for the Apollo 11 team deployed to the Cape [Kennedy]. We made a wrong call in simulation, and didn't understand the nature and significance of the alarms. So we sent the team back to work overnight to come up to speed with implications of the alarms on the mission and the LM [Lunar Module] guidance computer during the process of going down to the Moon. The amazing thing was this was our final training run. Normally final training is a graduation ceremony, but the instructors didn't treat it that way. We thought we weren't quite ready. When the real mission came along, we had come up to speed on what the program alarms meant. And, right in the battle of getting the crew down to the surface, we saw the alarms. We knew exactly what to do, continued the mission and landed on the Moon with less than 17 seconds of fuel remaining.JC: In the Apollo movies, everyone looks to one young guy for a signal whether to abort or continue when those alarms come on.
The average age of my entire team at Mission Control was 26. That was a young man by the name of Steve Bales. He knew exactly what to say. We were all glued to our own consoles because we had a lot of other problems at the same time. We knew we were going to be landing long, we had trajectory changes, we were waiting to get our landing radar in. We also had a minor electrical problem - communications weren't all up to snuff - so we had our hands full.
Plus you can watch live coverage of the moon landing synced to today here.
- Dépaysement: The sensation of being in another country.
- La douleur exquise: The heart-wrenching pain of wanting someone you can't have. Even a Sex in the City episode was named after it!
- Chômer: To be unemployed, but because it's a verb, it makes the state active.
- Profiter: To make the most of or take advantage of.
- Flâneur: As defined in the book Elegant Wits and Grand Horizontals, it's "the deliberately aimless pedestrian, unencumbered by any obligation or sense of urgency, who, being French and therefore frugal, wastes nothing, including his time, which he spends with the leisurely discrimination of a gourmet, savoring the multiple flavors of his city."
- Esprit d'escalier: The literal translation is staircase wit, but it means to think of a comeback when it's too late.
- Retrouvailles: The happiness of meeting again after a long time.
- Sortable: An adjective for someone you can take anywhere without being embarrassed.
- Voila/voici: It's so necessary that we use it all the time. "Voila" literally means "there it is" and "voici" means "here it is."
- Empêchement: An unexpected last-minute change of plans. A great excuse without having to be specific.
The Place in Israel Where Jews Are Banned
There is actually a place in Eretz Israel that Jews are strictly forbidden from entering. Notice how the sign reads "Jewish Access Forbidden" rather than "Israeli Access Forbidden." This means that Israeli Arabs-who make up 20% of Israel-are allowed to access this Arab neighborhood of Hebron, but not Jews. I spoke to many experts throughout Israel, and they told me that there is nothing comparable to this within Israel that forbids Muslim access.
The Israeli soldiers are guarding the check point because if any Jew gets through they are likely to be murdered.
Philly's Top Cop: If a Theater Patron Had Been Armed, 'Now You Got Two People Randomly Shooting'
I think he's confused on what random actually means since there was nothing random about Holmes' shooting.
The commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department said on ABC's "This Week" this morning that he didn't think a theater patron carrying a gun during the Aurora massacre would have helped stop the killings.
"You had tear gas in there, and unfortunately, many states, and I don't know about Colorado, but many states that authorize concealed carry have no provisions at all for people to receive training, marksmanship, proper handling of firearms, or whatever," said Charles Ramsey. "So now you got two people randomly shooting in a movie theater. I don't know how that helps."

Charles Ramsey is a freckle on the ass of my department. He and Mayor Nutter spend their days commenting on other shootings (Trayvon Martin, Aurora, etc) while pretending to be blissfully unaware that we have 196 - Oops, 197 now, with the homicide we just responded to an hour ago - murders here.
Physician, heal thyself.

Paris is more densely-populated than New York ...
... yet the French seem to have an aversion to washing.
Some things are truly beyond explanation.
Exit questions for chemists: How much cologne is needed to neutralize 5-day old B.O.? Could I carry a bottle of Vitalis or Lectric Shave, to splash on my moustache, and would it be enough for 1 week? Or is VicksVap-o-Rub the only sure method?

Money quote:
The software rebooted and reinitialized the computer, and then restarted selected programs at a point in their execution flow near where they had been when the restart occurred. To give you an example in today's terms, right now I have Windows95 with Netscape Communicator active as I compose this message. In the background, an audio CD is playing. WordPerfect is open, but has no active document, and Quicken has my checking account open. If I were to reboot now, all of those programs would be closed down. If Windows was a smart as the Apollo LGC executive, after the reboot the CD might not be playing and WordPerfect might not be there, but I would come back to this message composition window, with the same text displayed, and Quicken would have my checking account open to the proper place.

The shooter was wearing body armor- IF you were in that theater and IF you were armed and IF you managed to get off a few shots, they might have been ineffectual- UNLESS you figured out in a matter of seconds that the shooter was armored and you managed to find an unprotected spot to shoot at
lotta ifs
still, ONE person shooting back would have been preferable to no one shooting back

You could be completely wrong.
But I doubt it.
We are all looking to impress our own thoughts on this tragedy, and find some logical way to explain it, or find in some alternate reality what could have stopped it. But there is not alternative to what actually happened. And yeah, that police chief in Philly comes across as a total ass.

And yeah, that police chief in Philly comes across as a total ass.
He has a habit of firing officers before an investigation is conducted. As a result, these officers - some of which should have been fired - get their jobs back because the Chuck Wagon is too fast with the hammer.
Mayor Nutter gave him a $600,000 raise last year . . . after we tallied the biggest homicide numbers in five years. People don't lump Philly in with the big Democrat shitholes for some reason, but believe me, if you had any idea what goes on here, you'd run screaming.

Reason and Zerohedge are not "conservative" web sites. Reason is interesting, but it is a libertarian web site, and really not in tune with conservative American politics. And ZeroHedge is close to SF some times.
And the Telegraph.UK is not one either, although it does tilt a little that way. It's the only major news outlet in the English speaking world where you can find things reported that go down the memory hole with respect to the "free press" 'snort' in the United States.

Wyatt, my sis and bil live in nj, just outside of your fair city. It takes a lot to make Baltimore look habitable, but Philly and Detroit really make an effort.
It's a shame because Philly has a lot to offer - other than corpses. But 70+ years of Democrat rule destroyed us. Plus side? I have job security forever.

I hadn't been in Baltimore for years, and I was there the summer of 2010. I could not believe how run down the place looks, except the Inner Harbor which has been spruced up.
And Detroit is a total shit hole. It is hard to believe how far that city has fallen.
I used to live in Cleveland (suburbs) off and on in the 70's and 80's, and I have to say Cleveland is much nicer than any of those cities (Baltimore, Philly or Detroit). I have gone downtown many times in the past 10 years to go to a baseball or football game, and most of the actual downtown is really OK. Some parts of the city are really bad, though. But the far east end of the actual city (the Hough), was far worse in the 60's and 70's.

buzzion called this a "piss-poor argument". I can help you understand WHY this argument is poor. . .
Tyler Durden's prose is convoluted, dense, often ungrammatical and overfull of snark. Usually I can't even understand what he's on about, beyond "blah blah blah DOOM". And then he's often wrong and gets called on it in his comments.
So as a rundown of this century's economics... 0h doesn't work. 0h works only as a crank's-eye view of what is going on day by day.
I'm not saying ZeroHedge is entirely worthless; it does *link* to material that traders read, that otherwise might not be accessible to non-traders. The book 'Dark Pools' by Scott Patterson, for instance, I found out about via 0h.

Within one month our instructor taught us how to kill or seriously incapacitate an attacker so we had time to get away. The guy I take classes from teaches the local city cops.

As a right wing blog, zerohedge supported the OWS movement in its early stages, and has often called for federal regulation in the markets - in a confused fashion - which tells me that zerohedge hasn't really got a plan for HOW to organise a market. It's more: "government should do something!" meaning, "make Tyler Durden il duce and let HIM do something!" It's completely arbitrary.
Which makes zerohedge a fascist blog, not a (properly) right-wing blog. It is certainly not libertarian.

With respect to my experiences in Philly? Laziness.
Some of our female officers (and male officers, for that matter) are either way too fat or way too slight. The academy instructors offer defense techniques from time to time and the academy has a weight room - as do some district buildings.
That being said, very few people take advantage, and in many cases, the really out of shape worm their ways into desk jobs so they don't have to go out on the street. I could write a book about those stories.
Of course, the best partner I ever had was female, and she was tougher than I was. (It helped that she also looked like Cameron Diaz.)

Esprit d'escalier ... I am reminded of a girl from Pittsburgh, who after a swift ride through Munich (from the Hofbrauhaus) in a taxi, as only a native driver in a Mercedes can do, decided that we couldn't wait until we got to the room ... at 3:00 zulu ... oh, what a night, late september back in .... lol!! There was no empêchement, even when her traveling companion, another nurse, came out and shreeked at us!

Our instructor is a relatively short but strong guy who hails from a 'hood in south Richmond. We've gone over every situation the ladies can think of, with him as the thug and pulling no punches. I think one of the things a woman would have going for her would be the element of surprise. Most men aren't going to expect a woman to fight back or fight back effectively. He teaches Wing Chun, developed by a woman and good for those of small stature.

. . . about half the songs were basically "aren't we all cool because we're liberals?" with a strong undercurrent of "Christianity sucks!"
I wasn't especially surprised by this, given where we live. But it started me thinking. Can anyone think of a SINGLE musical performer who routinely does songs which blatantly insult liberals?
There are country singers who have lyrics like "I love this old country and if you disagree you can say hello to my fist" but I don't know of any musicians who come right out and sing about "liberals are hypocritical douchebags, tra la la." Even out-and-proud conservative musicians like Ted Nugent actually sing about girls and drugs and regular rock-lyric stuff like that.

Not to sound sexist, but most men are much physically stronger than women, so the instructor isn't an apples to apples. A 250lb man sitting on top of a 100lb woman will wear her out before she can get away from him. She will have to exert maximum force to get away, he will not. If teaching some martial art would make a 100lb woman equal to a 250lb man, we would have women prison guards guarding men. But as it is, we have male prison guards guarding females (not all, but alot) because they will be able to control the situation easier.
I'm not saying that women can't protect themselves, and that surprise is good, but brute force will win out time and time again.

Also, Taubes says you can have butter, cheese and bacon - but no fruit. The Paleo diet book I have says you can have fruit but no butter, cheese or bacon. Being a moron, I opted for the Taubes option of bacon and butter - but ,damn, blueberries and raspberries are in season and I love berries....

Free Republic lost it for me not because of evolution (as an agnostic, I agree evolution lacks persuasive evidence, and looks more absurd as time goes by).
There was a lot of great stuff on FR (have not read it in a long time).
But the relentless identification of conservatism = Christianity (or Judeo-Christian) = Republican party = Americanism, and the frequent expressions of hatred for gay folks, made it too frustrating to read.

It was Protestant Christian morality and ethics that allowed for representative democracy to work. Other cultures and ethos can borrow what the Anglosphere got right, but it is hard.

The weapon of choice is then the most reliable AR-15 you can get, with at last 10 high-quality mags. 20rd mags may be better than 30rd, as they are less likely to catch on anything, and they force a higher level of shooting discipline. OTOH, 30rd magazines are better if you have a large number of very close targets. 2, maybe 3, loading devices, Lula or other. Verify barrel twist rate, and buy appropriate ammunition ... 500 rds +. 4x scope. Cleaning equipment.

No question that Christianity, or a form of it, has been the cause of many, many good things in the world, nor is there a question (in my agnostic mind) that Christianity is important to the thinking of any American conservative.
Free Republic commentators, mostly wonderful folks, it seemed, too often had (to my agnostic mind) the narrow perspective that conservatism and Christianity were strictly identified.

The conservative atheists and agnostics I know generally recognize value in the Judeo-Christian tradition. It's the liberals (and frequently, the libertarians, which is one thing that drove me away from libertarianism) who feel the need to ridicule and belittle believers. But the libertarians don't want to make it a crime for parents to teach kids about religion - they're content to just ridicule (and they have that right). They're not trying to replace religion with the Creed of the State. The lefties are.

A large part of the reason that America is where it is right now is the inability of libertarians to sell their vision of America to average voters.
I'm libertarian leaning myself, but I've taunted many a full fledged libertarian that maybe those bible thumpers are inbred idiots, but somehow they can draw more then half a percent in a federal election.
I think that the slide of formal Libertarian Party types to Dopetarianism in the 90s is something we are paying for to this day.

I'm not really happy with my .38 snub. It's just not comfortable to shoot, at least for me.
Seriously consider replacing the grip first. A nice Hogue or Pachmayr can be delivered to your door for maybe $30.00, $50.00 if you want a bit more.
Spend some time on GunBroker, looking for grips. I have a Ruger Speed Six .357. The Hogue Monogrip, which I like, is a bit big and does not cover the back. I found the Pachmayr 2piece grip which completely covers the grip on all surfaces exceptthe top, and is noticeably smaller.
The Hogue grips my hand, so I have to grip it right the first time. The Pachmayr lets me adjust my grip a bit. I stick with the Pachmayr.
I also use 38+P, not .357 ammo, in the snubbie. .357s work in the snubbie, and deliver more power, BUT they make a lot more sense in a 4"+ barrel revolver.

I have Hogues on several other things. I really like their "grab" and lack of a seam. But the size on the Ruger was an issue, and the exposed metal (where it transmits recoil to my palm ... ?) and the fact that I cold grab it with the Hogue grip and grab it wrong and not be able to shift easily ... The Pachmayer solved all those problems, and I can't feel the seam. P wins.

Remember to check your loads. A .357 snubbie will fire higher load .357 rounds, but will be unhappy (with the higher quality ones taking longer to become unhappy). Your hand will likely become unhappy after 10 rounds or so. Move down to .38 or .38+P, and a Pachmayr, Hogue or other quality grip, and things will change a lot.

Don't. Seriously, just don't do it. They're cool, they're fun, but just don't. .410 shotshells don't have the ass to do much, so being able to fire them is nice, but not a big deal unless you have some land, in which case it's a great snake round. If you want a Judge / Governor to be an effective fight-stopping handgun, you'll have to load it with .45 Colt. At that point, why not buy a gun chambered for that round, or one of several Smith handguns that run .45ACP in moon clips?

Grampa, you are ruining all the expensive advertising all the gun companies do, wherein their brand new bullet-thrower is "breaking boundaries, making you a ninja with a pistol - YES, a pistol-ninja, if you just buy our gun." Like you, I have a 1911, but my EDC is a Sig 229 DA/SA. Why? I like it, and it has eaten everything I've ever fed it, 2-3k rounds in. Those of you who want to carry, find a gun, any gun from a top-tier manufacturer, and shoot it...and shoot it, and shoot it. There is no easy way to be capable, and I say that because I am not yet. I fully intend to get professional training, and those who are interested in carrying a gun should do so as well. The process doesn't end after buying a gun - that's where it begins.

A Single action revolver did have to be cocked.
But carrying a six shooter in a holster and bouncing along on a horse MIGHT cause the hammer to bounce around and fire off a round. And a lot of those old revolvers had no safety (did any of them have a safety?).
Yeah, I can believe no one rode around with the hammer on a live round. There just wasn't that much of a need to quick draw and fire. All that gunplay in movies has the ring of horseshit to it all.
Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch writes.... at July 22, 2012 08:03 PM (sJTmU)
Modern revolvers (mid-1970's) now incorporate a "transfer bar" between the hammer and the firing pin. The bar is dimpled so the firing pin will not toufh the cartridge primer. Pulling the hammer back moves the bar and the dimple, so when the hammer is released, the hammer strikes the bar, and the firing pin is forced against the primer. With this device, it is safe to have a cartridge in the cylinder lined up with the hammer/firing pin.
Formerly, the pin was part of the hammer, and revolvers were customarily carried with a empty chamber indexed with the hammer.

I was thinking about this earlier today in the car - is it odd to anyone else that the desire to adopt "rescue" pets is considered a virtue (and I agree it is - I've only had "free" dogs that would have gotten the gas if they weren't adopted) while the right to end human life must be defended as though it's the hill to die on? Where are the human adoption advocates amongst the animal rights crowd?

@ 389-
Supposedly that goes all the way back to the cap and ball revolver era-
I never would load all 6 chambers in my Italian replica cap and ball revolver, but I see no reason for such precautions in a modern design revolver.

My 1858 Remington is the only oldie that you can carry 6 safely. It has a notch for the hammer to rest in. None of the others have this.
My Blackhawk has the transfer bar, but it's still a 5shooter--for me.

Teaching a kid how to shoot, or an adult who's never fired a gun, for that matter, is one of the great pleasures on this planet. They learn to respect the gun, but also learn to see it as a simple tool and stop fearing it as though it was a living thing, capable of acts of destruction independent of the hands controlling it. Most times, they want to learn to master it. Converting one at a time...

I am not sure I like the sound of this. The Marines are training up 3 new Police Battalions for rapid deployment supposedly to our allies who are having civillian policing problems. They have special training in civil disturbances.
Now it would be illegal for them to be deployed in the US, unless of course some crazy narcissistic president decided to declare a state of national emergency. Then bang, 1,500 Marines in your town with orders to police you. Maybe I am just paranoid but I really don't trust Obama all that much.

Well he could always make sure that the zoning board won't let him get zoning for his restaurant. Then the building inspector can find all kinds of code violations. Then the health inspector could find out that there are rat droppings everywhere and needs to close you down until that is fixed. Then the, well, you get the point. As a commercial Realtor, I run into this all the time with one of my tenants. The city doesn't like him, so I get letters from the city telling me of all the code violations that he is "guilty" of. Such as not closing the door on the dumpster enclosure. Of course, the trash company picks up at 7am, he doesn't open until 9am, and if the driver leaves the gate open, he is in violation. Has nothing to do with the fact that another place down the street does the same thing, but he is not a "local", the other guy is. When a city wants to get rid of a restaurant, they go about it like this.

Back from the vigil in Aurora CO. Westboro found themselves 'detained' on their way to disrupt the memorial. Gosh darnit. I was part of the 'wall' to shield the mourners from view and amongst Denver's Reddit group, we quickly discovered Westboro was photoshopping themselves into pictures from the vigil in places they would not have been able to get to, thanks to our efforts. I'm glad it turned out we weren't needed as a shield and instead could just be there as support.

"... That's the thing about Obama. Time and again, he does things and says things that are un-American. Not evil. Not anti-American. Just un-American."
Mr. Steyn, I love ya, but you're wrong. "un-American?" No. "Un-American" is what I call the conservative assault on (or at least denial of) Separation of Church and State. That's just one part of one amendment to the Constitution, although it IS the first sentence in the Bill of Rights.
The Constitution starts off with "We the People", and guys like Obama have a problem with even that part. The idea is for the people to govern themselves, for the purpose of protecting the rights of individuals. As Lincoln put it, "Government, of, for, and by the people."
Guys like Obama bristle at such ideas. To them, it's "People of, for, and by the Government." The part of Obama's Roanoke speech where he says "you didn't build that" makes this glaringly obvious. Considering that this is the EXACT opposite of what America is all about, that makes him - most definitely - "anti-American".
Seems like high-profile pundits don't want to say the obvious, because the clueless masses don't understand it, and don't want to hear that the President is anti-American.
On Day One he sent back that bust of Churchill, and it went down from there. Shutting down oil & coal production, while pissing away money on Green energy. Wontonly running up the debt. Consulting the UN but not Congress before going to war. Betraying Isreali state secrets. Even the Keystone Pipeline. Socialized medicine. Defending Atty Genl's contempt of Congress. No other President has behaved this way.

We live in Silicon Valley. BH is on business trip to North Carolina.
For some inexplicable reason, corporate travel launches her out of SFO (an hour away) at 9 am and has her do a 3-hour stopover in Detroit. Which becomes a 6-hour stopover. She lands in NC half an hour after the rental car place was supposed to have closed.....fortunately, she called ahead and they held a guy over to get her a car.
Checks into hotel -- smells kind-of funny, but it's well after midnight. Sleeps in, wakes up, finds previous guest left chicken dinner in microwave a while back. Goes outside to run errands, discovers 3 tires slashed on rental car.
She seems to be coping ok, but I'm somewhat glad to be 3000 miles away at the moment......you've heard of someone "getting ripped a new asshole"? -- the next person to get on her nerves is getting a whole new set of orifices as a package deal.

Speaking of songs, I saw a seemingly new anti-Romney ad within the least few hours. I guess the cease-fire is over.
There are many things that strike me as odd about it:
1) This is NY. Why the hell is he wasting his money here? But since it means he's wasting money that would be better spent elsewhere, I would gladly watch Obama ads all day long.
2) The whole ad has Mitt Romney singing "God Bless America" in the background. He's not a great singer, but it's not painful to listen to. Seems to me, this speaks to Obama's anti-Americanism and tone-deafness. Romney comes off like the average American, singing a patriotic song just as proudly - and as poorly - as everybody else. Obama's base probably considers the song that he's singing to be damning enough by itself.
3) The rest of the ad is a series of claims about Romney outsourcing - the same claims that even the Leftist media says are lies, and which gained little traction, despite the huge sums he has spent.
He's still got nothing new, he's doing a lousy job making Romney look bad, and he's wasting his money by singing to the choir, in this state.

"Obama was probably offended by WC's iron curtain speech."
Not a bad theory, but the best theories I've heard involve the anti-colonialist marxist influences in his life. Related to that - since Kenya was a British colony under Churchill - is that Obama's grandfather was jailed (for political reasons) by the British, IIRC.
Yeah, anybody who knows a fair amount about Obama should be asking WTF is this guy doing as POTUS?

"A while ago I boldly predicted that NY might actually be in play come Nov.
Ogabe has done his level best to alienate a big chunk of the jewish vote, and Mayor Nannystate is scaring the crap out of a lot of people...and the NYS economy is in the shitter and looking more like MI/CA every day...and businesses/residents are fleeing. "
Sadly, you seem to have no idea what these people are like. The jewish guy I used to know seemed pretty clueless about how anti-Isreal Obama is, and didn't seem to care about it much, even though he, himself, had lived there several years. The Jewish in NY seem to be liberals first, and sympathetic with Isreal 2nd. I think half of them don't give a shit about Isreal (Christian Fundamentalist with Bible prophesies seem to care more!), and they are probably less than 5% of the state's population.
Mayor Nannystate has made headlines for fascist craziness, but I wouldn't be surprised if they voted him back in anyway. NYC has been on a different page than the USA since before there WAS a USA.
Seems like the NYS economy has been in that shitter for 50 years - they DON'T CARE. They complain bitterly about how their kids have to leave in order to have a decent future, but when some private-sector business is foolish enough to try to come here, they are openly hostile. They are EXACTLY like Obama. They always have some government initiative going on to make things better, and there is some community organizing-type stuff that has a very small footprint, is superficial, and lasts for only a short time. So everything is always "getting better", but everything stays the same.
But maybe that's just my end of the state - near Buffalo. Regardless, pigs will fly before this state votes against Obama. These people remind me on a girl in High School who kept insisting that Nixon was innocent, long after the facts came out. They will consider no other way. They are "stuck on stupid".

Oh, I should add that those ads here in NY are at least fairly infrequent. I think I saw 2 tonight, and that seemed like a lot.
I have this theory that President Smartest-Guy-In-Room is worried this time around, and is insisting on micromanaging the campaign. He has this massive, ineffective bureaucracy, is deficit spending, and has only the same old lies, celebrity, class warfare, and hot air to offer. The lower the percentage of carbohydrates in your diet, the faster the weight loss.
Since joining Livestrong.com I've found out why my weight seems to plummet during the weekends. It's because I stop eating my All Bran cereal. Drops like a stone. Apparently the cereal accounts for most of my carb intake.

When I was in college, there was a period where I was having three bowls of cereal every morning for breakfast.....and I was gaining weight steadily. Then I changed to two bowls each morning, and slowly lost weight. Same dorms, same insipid entrees, same walk to classes. Little lifestyle choices + daily repetition + time = something very powerful.

Sadly, I don't even own a truck. The odd use for carpet scraps is padding the edges of water gardens -- and I'd probably just toss these rather than go through the hassle.

He's already been quoted as saying he believed he could do anyone on his campaign staff's job better than they could.
I doubt any of the long time professional DNC campaign experts are involved in this clusterfuck at all, or if they are they're being completely ignored. Anyone with a handful of neurons firing would have counseled him against saying some of the stupid shit he has.

I bought this joint new in 89'. Its still not the way I want it, and I haven't started on any of the cosmetic shit yet...all electrical, structural, plumbing, etc
I want all the infrastructure mods bagged and tagged before doing any cosmetics.

The fucking cocksuckers cut off free access to the on-line crossword (for home delivery customers no less!).
It's the only reason I get the damned paper. My wife gets it for sports and the Style section on Sundays. We laugh at the homosexual marriage photos.
I will be calling, complaining, and then cancelling. They will respond with a counter-offer that makes the paper essentially free for six months. I will accept and laugh.

Pathetic.

And an artificial jellyfish seems to be a low-demand item, if you ask me.

There is a good Chinese restaurant in NYC that makes Jellyfish salad. It sounds awful but it's actually quite good. Maybe that's the reason for the research?

They're trying to grow replacement hearts that don't trigger an immune response.
It's straight out of Larry Niven's 'A Gift From Earth' but a couple centuries sooner.

Scientists have created a free-swimming 'jellyfish' out of silicone seeded with living heart muscle cells.
The Harvard University and Caltech team say that their work marks a big step towards the development of an artificial heart - and suggests a broader definition of what counts as synthetic life.
"I was surprised that with relatively few components - a silicone base and cells that we arranged - we were able to reproduce some pretty complex swimming and feeding behaviors that you see in biological jellyfish," says professor John Dabiri of Caltech.
Jellyfish, believed to be the oldest multi-organ animals in the world, use muscles to pump their way through water. Surprisingly, perhaps, their basic morphology is pretty similar to that of a beating human heart.
To reverse engineer their medusa jellyfish - dubbed Medusoid - the investigators used analysis tools more generally used in law enforcement biometrics and crystallography to map the alignment of subcellular protein networks within all of the animal's muscle cells.
They then took a sheet of cultured rat heart muscle tissue and incorporated a silicone polymer, fashioning the Medusoid's body into a thin membrane like a small jellyfish, with eight arm-like appendages.
It was placed in a container of ocean-like salt water and successfully shocked into swimming with synchronized muscle contractions like those of real jellyfish - indeed, the muscle cells started to contract on their own even before the electrical current was applied.
The same strategy, says professor Kevin Kit Parker of Harvard, could be used to reverse engineer muscular organs in humans.
"As engineers, we are very comfortable with building things out of steel, copper, concrete," he says. "I think of cells as another kind of building substrate, but we need rigorous quantitative design specs to move tissue engineering to a reproducible type of engineering. The jellyfish provides a design algorithm for reverse engineering an organ's function and developing quantitative design and performance specifications. We can complete the full exercise of the engineer's design process: design, build, and test."
The researchers now plan to make the artificial jellyfish more sophisticated, allowing it to turn and move in a particular direction - and even incorporating a simple 'brain' so it can respond to its environment by, say, heading toward a light source or seeking food.Posted by: epobirs at July 23, 2012 03:29 AM (kcfmt)
If it takes 1960 technology to get to the moon, I guess Islam won't get there soon even with NASA's help.
