Overnight Open Thread (7-23-2012)
— Maetenloch

Oh and an update on last night's rankings - Doug Ross (no relation to Bob) says he used the wrong data and that Ace and company should have been #33. In light of this the kick murder squads have now been recalled.

Remembering Bob Ross

He's been gone for 17 years but his memory lives on and episodes of The Joy of Painting are still in syndication. He was most famous for his wet-on-wet painting technique and crazy afro hairstyle. Longtime ONTers will also know what he did before he became a painting instructor.

I remember running across his show on PBS and being mesmerized by his voice and style even though I didn't paint. By all accounts he was a decent and gentle man and I think the YouTube commenter was right who said that "This man was a beautiful human being, the world is a darker place now that he's gone".

And he never took himself too seriously as you can see in this promo he did for MTV. The world could use more of his Happy Little Trees therapy.

His son, Steve, also paints and is a lot like his dad but also works in innuendos as well.

Five Men Agree To Stand Directly Under An Exploding Nuclear Bomb

And four of them were volunteers.

On July 19, 1957, five Air Force officers and one photographer stood together on a patch of ground about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. They'd marked the spot "Ground Zero. Population 5" on a hand-lettered sign hammered into the soft ground right next to them.

...This footage comes from our government's archives. It was shot by the U.S. Air Force (at the behest of Col. Arthur B. "Barney" Oldfield, public information officer for the Continental Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs) to demonstrate the relative safety of a low-grade nuclear exchange in the atmosphere. Two colonels, two majors and a fifth officer agreed to stand right below the blast. Only the cameraman, George Yoshitake, didn't volunteer.

Luckily for them the bomb was only a 2 Kiloton one and detonated 18,500 feet above them. And thanks to a recorder we can see and hear what they felt under the blast.

The Sexual Assault Victim Who Can't Legally Name Her Attackers

They pled guilty but because they're under 18 the judge issued a gag order prohibiting their 17-year-old victim from naming them.

A 17-year-old sexual assault victim is facing a jail sentence for tweeting the names of her attackers in anger at their light punishment.

Savannah Dietrich named and shamed the boys on the social messaging site, writing: 'There you go, lock me up. I'm not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell.'

The teenager told from Louisville, Kentucky told The Courier-Journal she was frustrated by what she feels is a lenient deal for her attackers.

...The contempt charge carries a possible sentence of 180 days in jail and a $500 fine.

The boys pleaded guilty on June 26 to first-degree sexual abuse and misdemeanor voyeurism. Miss Dietrich says she was unaware of a plea agreement until just before it was announced in court.

I understand the desire to protect juvenile offenders but on the other hand the victim of a crime should always be free to tell their own story. Personally I'd take the fine and jail time if necessary.

Harriet Tubman's Perfect Record: Brains and Opium on the Underground Railroad

Tubman ran up her unblemished record while leading groups of runaways on a 650-mile odyssey from eastern Maryland to St. Catharines, Ontario. Starting in 1850, Tubman made a total of 19 journeys, personally freeing more than 300 slaves.

And here's some of her tips on how she did it. Most of them would still be effective today.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS: Although there were thousands of slaves waiting to be freed, Tubman never bit off more than she could chew. Since large numbers would inevitably attract more attention, she usually conducted runaways in groups of 12 to 15-the most that could safely take cover in an out-of-the-way barn, cellar, or ditch.

DRUG THE KIDS: Since Tubman always tried to keep families together, her traveling parties often included small children who could slow the group down or, worse, give it away by crying at the wrong moment. To curb these problems, Tubman always carried paregoric, an opium tincture that could knock out tots for hours at a time.

Are You a Twitter Psycho?

Well according to a study your Twitter style may be signs of psychoness:

What are some of the Twitter stylings of these undesirables? Curse words. Angry responses to other people, including swearing and use of the word "hate."  Using the word "we." Using periods. Using filler words such as "blah" and "I mean" and "um."

And to confirm their results they had people agree or disagree with a series of statements like this and then examined their tweets.

Psychopathy
  1. Payback needs to be quick and nasty.
  2. I like to pick on losers.

Narcissism

  1. I have been compared to famous people.
  2. I insist on getting the respect I deserve.

Machiavellianism

  1. You should wait for the right time to get back at people.
  2. Most people are suckers.

Well um blah blah you just made our list buddy.

Utah Man Uses Obituary To Get Some Things Off His Chest

Val Patterson died of cancer earlier this month at the age of 59 and in his obituary he decided to come clean on a few things:

Now that I have gone to my reward, I have confessions and things I should now say. As it turns out, I AM the guy who stole the safe from the Motor View Drive Inn back in June, 1971. I could have left that unsaid, but I wanted to get it off my chest. Also, I really am NOT a PhD. What happened was that the day I went to pay off my college student loan at the U of U, the girl working there put my receipt into the wrong stack, and two weeks later, a PhD diploma came in the mail. I didn't even graduate, I only had about 3 years of college credit. In fact, I never did even learn what the letters "PhD" even stood for. For all of the Electronic Engineers I have worked with, I'm sorry, but you have to admit my designs always worked very well, and were well engineered, and I always made you laugh at work. Now to that really mean Park Ranger; after all, it was me that rolled those rocks into your geyser and ruined it. I did notice a few years later that you did get Old Faithful working again. To Disneyland - you can now throw away that "Banned for Life" file you have on me, I'm not a problem anymore - and SeaWorld San Diego, too, if you read this.

Tampa Strip Club Hires Sarah Palin Lookalike For GOP Convention

Thee Doll House, on North West Shore Boulevard, doesn't have webcams but its dancers are also planning to cash in during the convention.

Thee Doll House recently underwent a $1 million renovation and plans to bring in a Palin impersonator to entertain customers.

Neither club would predict how much money they would make during the convention but both expect business to more than quadruple.

Okay I guess I'm supposed to be OUTRAGED!! but really...eh. On the other hand is there even a single Democrat female politician that men would go pay money to see a nude lookalike of?

100 A shame what happened to the girl, but I'm glad she threw it back at the system. IMAO, DAs have gotten way too easy with plea bargains--yeah, they want to get the case off their desk, but they need to ask the question every time, is justice being served here?

As for judges, I'm not all that thrilled with their act, either. Last time I was on jury duty, the judge lectured us that it was "not our job" to decide whether the law was fair, just to determine if the defendant violated it.

Screw that. The Constitution sets up the citizens as sovereign in this country. They get to be the ultimate arbiters of justice, not some politically appointed hack in a robe.

That's why we have jury trials in the first place. Otherwise, we would let the almighty judge decide, like in the United Fucking Kingdom.

138 Varying primary yield by boosting with fusion, using small amounts of deuterium / tritium gas inside the primary fission bomb to increase its yield. Typically, the gas is injected a few seconds before detonation and the amount used can be preset.Varying primary yield by varying the timing or use of external neutron initiators (ENIs) These are small particle accelerators that cause a brief fusion reaction by accelerating deuterium into a tritium target (or potentially vice-versa), producing a short energetic pulse of neutrons. Precise timing of the ENI pulse as the nuclear primary's pit is collapsing can significantly affect yield, and the rate of neutron injection can also be controlled.Shutting down the thermonuclear secondary, either by firing the primary at low enough yield that it does not compress the secondary sufficiently to ignite, or by blocking energy transport inside the warhead briefly as the primary is firing using shutters or a similar mechanism. If the primary's energy starts to disperse through the radiation case before being focused on the secondary then the secondary will likely never detonate

Seriously, it's a fantastic role model for other fast food chains. The food is good (except the waffle fries, which I still haven't figured out the appeal of), the employees are unfailingly polite, and the kids meals always have something decent as the "prize", not plastic crap that's tied to an awful movie I wouldn't let my kids watch in a million years (unlike Mickey D's or Burger King---I think Burger King actually had Twilight toys in their kids meals before).

Y-not, thanks for posting that, just so I could see that someone would put pen to paper in such a nasty way - That is so deliberately twistedly evilly wrong that I was actually a little shocked to see it in print...it's a perfect example of the Big Lie.  White people have always had guns.  In most states, they always will.  Gun control and other restriction efforts came about after emancipation as a way to control newly-"freed" slaves by preventing them from the means of self-defense.  Gun control was just one part of the Jim Crow society, and that's where it got its start.  Firearms restrictions are always, 100% of the time, about preventing the weak from defending themselves against the strong, whomever the strong may be, e.g. government, oppressors, or favored criminals.

One approach to dog training avoids smacking the dog directly, especially for an offense well in the past. Smacking the object of the offense and declaring it bad has just as much psychological effect on the dog.

It's kind of like that.

I once watched a Berkeley cop fend off a bad guy who was trying to grab his gun. The cop just poked him with his baton. No strikes, no drawing of weapon or mace or anything. The cop knew that if he hit the guy he would lose his job.

At that point I knew that perhaps even NJ was better.

I remember the one near Thousand Oaks. Though the mascot kid was very dark skinned he was dressed to indicate he was Indian rather than Africa. This made the tigers make more sense but went against the source material. My father had an edition from about 1920, possibly passed from an older cousin since he was the oldest kid in his family and not born until 1928. The artwork was the sort of thing that would send some people into a seething rage.

When I took my concealed carry class, the majority of the students were 1) African-American and 2) middle-aged. That's not terribly surprising, as St. Louis is a majority black city. It's racists like Marcotte who want to take away their (and my) right to protect our lives, liberty, and property. That's evil.

It's stories like that that help fuel my anger against those like Marcotte and her ilk.  Every time they raise the barriers to gun ownership, they prevent those on the economic margins from being able to participate.  They are actively disarming the (law-abiding) poorest and most in need of the tools of self-defense, then wave the bloody shirts and scream when the very people they've declared permanent governmental paternal status over are harmed.  They are blind to the fact that they are in fact accessories to the crimes they claim to hate, refusing any admittance that they may have facilitated the violence as they perfect humanity.

/I'm not trying to make this a gun thread - that's just one of the things that pisses me off very personally.  Not from experience, but because I believe everyone should have the ability to defend themselves when trouble comes knocking.  It's absolutely despicable the way the left has taken the poor and shackled them into a life where they must choose between grinding poverty and defenselessness or a short life of aggression followed by early death or imprisonment.  It's 2012, for God's sake.  We should be better than that.

The tip-off is when they suddenly change banks to one 10 states away for the payroll accounts.  That's a very common ploy used to buy time and lengthen the amount of time it takes checks to clear.

When the bank switch happens, the end is very very near.

Ewan joined Thomson Reuters, which assists in setting the BBA Libor rate, as head of business development for the company’s benchmark operations. “John Ewan is no longer at the BBA,” Brian Mairs, a BBA spokesman, said in a telephone interview today. “He left to pursue a new opportunity to further his career.” Ewan joined the BBA in 2005, according to his profile on networking website LinkedIn. The U.K. has come under fire for failing to address problems in setting Libor years before the record 290 million- pound ($456 million) fine against Barclays (BARC) Plc for attempting to manipulate the benchmark last month. Timothy F. Geithner, then the New York Federal Reserve President, in June 2008 warned the Bank of England that the method used to set the London interbank offered rate was open to abuse.

514 @515 well, it's a fair enough description to call mri one big emag field, but note also that earth itself is surrounded with "a huge electromagnetic field", and has been since the advent of our harnessing of radiative technologies ca. 70 years ago! we have LONG been in the age of radio technology, and while these days, most signals are sent via high-gain (i.e., "directional") antennae, things like broadcast, wi-fi, and cellular signals still radiate essentially spherically, filling up every single nook and cranny of space transparent to their travel! mri is exceedingly safe, at any rate. the radiation involved is in the radio range; i.e., the very-lowest-frequency band of the electromagnetic spectrum. unlike x-rays and the gamma radiation involved with radiotherapy, which are the two highest energy forms of electromagnetic radiation, radio frequencies are not ionising, and therefore are extremely safe. the ultraviolet frequencies in sunlight are more dangerous to the human body than the RF field created during an mri! the claustrophobia-inducing device may be uncomfortable, but unlike in the case of, say, PET and ct, mri radiation is non-ionising and nothing to worry about, so don't let health considerations influence you to put that diagnostic off!

The 'open' MRI deliver much lower resolution. They simply aren't effective for many common items doctors are looking for in a scan. Someday perhaps but not now.

I didn't know I had serious claustrophobia until I had to have an MRI. I was being treated for high blood pressure and the anxiety of being in the tube was going to make me stroke out, which would have made checking my renal artery for blockage a moot issue.

They offered to sedate me (Ativan) but then some bright person thought to mention that the same exam could be done by ultra-sound. They just don't like it because it takes about three hours but I was fine with that.

The other 36 clones are secured in geologically stable repositories in case they're needed in the future. The original Bob Ross just went back to his homeworld in the Kalium galaxy to share what he'd discovered of our art and culture.

531 Do they still have the little panic button thingy in the MRI tube? It's been 8 years since I had mine for a herniated disk, and to this day, I still can't believe I was able to do it. Cramped spaces don't really make me claustrophobic, but pipes, tubes, tunnels and caves skeeve the f out of me.

Since it was my lower back, they did let me wear some headphones and listen to music.

Ah, one of THOSE places. I don't know if they exist in your neck of the woods but back in the 70s JCA ran some good Jewish but apolitical camps. Outside of trying to perpetuate some of the culture there were no elements of indoctrination I can recall.

The camp for blind kids in the movie 'Mask' was a few miles away. I remember seeing Rocky Dennis but didn't learn his name until that movie many years later.

Looks like the Malibu camp is still going.

546 @552 i know what you mean. i'm really bad with blood -- ESPESH my own -- so it doesn't take much to disconcert me completely. i had blood taken for a diagnostic once, and i'm a notoriously difficult patient to take blood from, so they always need a couple of nurses to hold me stationary for the phlebotomist to git 'r dun. one time, the nurse actually taking the blood removed the needle in an unusually violent manner, and it caused me to bleed rather considerably around the puncture wound...when i looked down to inspect the damage after they had cottoned and bandaged it, blood was visibly seeping out. panic begun to take hold, and though it was many years ago, i still remember thinking i was going to die. i couldn't breathe; i couldn't move; i couldn't think about anything but how wrong this simple procedure had gone, and as a result, i was now going to bleed out and die right here in the nurses' restrictive embrace. panic is no joke, and i can imagine that for those wilth even mild claustrophobia, the mri procedure can be be a consternating experience.

Philip K. dick wrote a story called 'The Pre-Persons' (collected in 'The Golden Man' anthology) in which post-natal abortion is legal up until the age when a human becomes a person. The criterion is the ability to perform algebra. The lead character is a Stanford mathematics professor who suffers a brain injury and can no longer meet the base cognitive requirement to be considered a person no longer subject to the whims of his parents in regard to his very existence.

555 A couple weeks after the attempted MRI I had a job in San Francisco for a week, supporting an event at the Metreon. The motel we were staying in had the tiniest elevator I've ever seen and there was no automatic door at the top floor. Just a normal hinged door to push outward.

My expectations for an elevator were so trained to expect an automatic door and I was already feeling extremely uncomfortable in that tiny space. I went up and down, building towards a panic before I realized what I was missing.

I'm really glad none of the other people on the gig were around at that moment. Embarrassment on top of the anxiety would have really sucked.

Now, he's not been great this year (around 260 batting) but he was the ONLY draw for the team, they have nobody else to pull in fans to games. And to top it all off, they PAID THE YANKEES TO TAKE HIM and got two unknown chump pitchers in return.
If there's one thing the Mariners do not need, its pitching. That has to rank as one of the top 10 stupid trades of all time. I think the owners of the M's want to move, or something.

Cro-Mags - "World Peace"

All you hippies better start to face reality,
All your far fetched dreams of anarchy,
Better start to see things the way they are,
Cause the way things
Are going, they won't be goin' far.

World peace can't be done.
It just can't exist.
World peace can't be done.
Anarchy's a mess.

Things are gettin' hectic.
It's all gonna end.
You don't know what's waitin' up around the bend.
Open your eyes, perhaps you'll realize.
If AIDS don't get ya then the warheads will.

World peace can't be done!
World peace!
It just can't exist.
World peace!
World peace can't be done.
World peace!
Anarchy's a mess!
World peace can't be done!
World peace!
No it can't.
World peace!
It just won't exist.
World peace! World peace! World peace!

i think they liked him. they all behaved really well in front of him. Frankly i ended up having to work while he was here. a client brought a new horse in for an eval and drop off and then we ate lunch with him and Mero. Then i had to work mine. I think he was surprised when i stuck the hose running water in the socket of my one eyed stud's missing eye, and the horse liked it. we agreed it must itch, and the cool water feels soothing. My black mare showed off for him. It seems empty with my two favourites missing.

but uncle Horse is gone to a new family with kids to love him, and the Famous Ellie is at summer camp. what was funniest was how the little hairless wonder took a shine to him. That was so cute. She crawled into his lap and decided Uncle Mero was Teh Bomb. she curled up in his lap and showed him her belly and purred and purred. You could see her smile up at him. if she was a girl shed have thrown him her panties. Funny little cat. she and Mo were fighting over him, and who uncle loved best.

634 In south FL, I'm unconvinced that attic insulation does anything at all, and in fact may hurt.  The old style Florida houses that cooled with ceiling fans and jalousy windows weren't insulated.

An ex-neighbor just bought a 2-story repo down the road and his 2nd floor is hot even with the A/C running full crank.  The attic insulation is trapping all the heat that radiates in through the walls during the day.

642 When we re-roofed 2 years ago I redesigned the attic ventilation. House is shaped like a U -- one upright is the garage, so no attic; other upright is cathedral ceiling (converted garage), so no attic; main house sits crosswise and I stuck large vents up high on each end with a solar fan in the middle, then made sure I had sufficient vents around the edge. It's actually livable (though hardly pleasant) in the middle of hot days without anything else, and we never have the feeling that heat is radiating from above in the living quarters.

Contrariwise, once you heat the living quarters, it stays warm pretty well.

Posted by: a cynical but rarely angry Adriane at July 24, 2012 02:49 AM (qmMAj)

Heat rises. The normal pattern of airflow in the attic is inward by the eaves and out from the top. The air will be coolest by the edges and hottest at the highest point. That's why having big vents near the top of each end with a little solar thing in the middle is very efficient in the summer -- the solar doesn't move much air, but it moves the hottest air out first. If you have 100% venting at the eaves, it won't do much unless the air has somewhere to go. I have considered putting a kill switch on the solar fan for the winter so that the attic isn't quite as much of a refrigerator, but it hasn't been that bad yet.

OK so I got Three Dog Night cranked on my urban ears phones. Out in the country should have gone to number one on the charts.

You got vocal harmony with a cool wurlzbach organ, guitar licks and a pure energy in that song.

704 Good night, Adriane! Pleasant dreams of Ben Browder tenderizing a steak and installing vents in your new old house.

705 Night, adriane!

706 Everyone say, "goodnight, DC" Schedule is getting goofy on me, so I won't be around late night for a bit. Have fun, y'all.

707 The missile was likely a Genie missile.  My Dad was a mechanic on the F-89.  The trailing plane is NOT an F-89 so the wording is wrong, it is not a pair of F-89s.  The trailing plane is a B-57 Canberra (Dad worked on those, too).

708 I actually liked the PK mechanic (Galina was her name, IIRC).  She was cute.

709 What gives? The ONTs are much livelier lately.  They were petering out before comment 500 earlier this month

Well there was a lot of gun talk earlier and that'll sustain a conversation for quite some time.

Posted by: Robert at July 23, 2012 11:51 PM (4ixH5)

712 and politics haven't been brought up that much tonight, quick way to clear out the ONT

713 Did you get stormed upon Zakn?  Looks like a train of red hitting my place on the radar... I'm 50 miles from home so I'll espy the damage when I get back

Posted by: zeera at July 23, 2012 11:54 PM (XtxRN)

714 Storms in MN. You all never get a break...unless it's from slipping on the ice walking to your car or somethin.

Posted by: Journolist at July 23, 2012 11:56 PM (WzLTm)

715 ya, we got the ice and snow to look forward to.  But the bugs aren't an issue then.

Three Dog Night should have played the intro to "Out in the Country" for another 20 seconds to hold it open. Amateur producers back then.

721 wish we could get some rain

Posted by: The Dude at July 24, 2012 12:24 AM (tw6Ar)

722 Looks like Indiana has a chance to get some if the storms don't fall apart.  It sounds pretty dire down there

Posted by: zeera at July 24, 2012 12:38 AM (XtxRN)

723 I got one of those $40 cable thingies...haven't even taken it out of the box yet.  Don't have cable TV either...so that tells you how much TV I watch...like zero.

724 Posted by: @PurpAv at July 24, 2012 04:52 AM (0vxwX) It's a converter so you'd still need to buy the digital antenna. For a cheap one that costs about...well, it's been a few years but mine costs something like $15 bucks?

726 #738  It is terrible,  and I have to tell you I would rather have a long,  cold winter than a drought and heat wave.  Everyone who isn't watering has dead lawns.  Yards are straw-colored and shrubs and trees are dying.  It's devastating to the farmers.

727 Well Miss Marple is up. Good morning young lady. I imagine you've left like I did an hour ago when I saw no one was around. I'm gonna go catch up at AT till I hit the shower. Have a great day ma'am and morning to you too Vic.

I was on a traveling about a decade ago on a business trip somewhere in Europe--travelled a lot in those days -- and couldn't sleep in the wee hours of early morning and switched on the TV and there was Bob Ross-- speaking Turkish with subtitles.

He'll no dbout be on TV for another 50 years somewhere in the world.

729 Bob Ross was always fun to watch. When I channel surfed, bored with everything I saw, I come across Bob Ross and stop clicking. He had one flaw. He would make beautiful paintings with "happy trees" but every time he would then ruin it with one large tree covering up what he did. I suppose it was his intent to show perspective the painting, but it was a distraction. He just couldn't leave a good painting well enough alone.
