Since you've all been jonesing for a gun thread - well here ya go. Oh and FYI I'll be off traveling tomorrow and Thursday so be nice to the subs.
I had heard the name but didn't realize how unique the Five-seveN is until I read Bob Owen's post on why it was George Zimmerman's choice when faced with a potential lynch mob:
After the New Black Panther Party put a price on George Zimmerman's head, he decided that he wasn't going to take any assassination attempts lying down.
Having not been accused of any politically-motivated crimes at the time and still in possession of a valid Florida CCH permit, Zimmerman equipped himself with a FN Five-seveN, a decent choice of weapon for some that faced the possibility of a lynching if caught by the racist mob.
What's special about it? Well it's semi-automatic, only weighs 1.39lbs, and can hold 20 rounds of the unique FN 5.7x28mm cartridge. I was skeptical but the more I've read about it, the more intrigued I am.
And another interesting gun that I wasn't aware of until recently is the Revolver Rhino.
It comes in typical revolver calibers but what makes it different is that fact that it has a flat cylinder and the barrel is aligned with the lowest chamber. This combination gives you a very low profile concealed carry gun with much reduced recoil.
Meanwhile the US military for the first time in 67 years is once again ordering 1911 pistols - this time for the Marines.
Colt Defense LLC said Friday it has been awarded a $22.5 million, five-year contract to provide theU.S. Marine Corps with the latest .45 caliber pistols that were originally provided to the military in 1911.And if you're looking for some ammo, check out Palmetto State Armory. They have pretty good prices and are offering free shipping all summer. I just replenished using them and am now at 96% zombie readiness levels.
...The contract is to provide as many as 12,000 tan-colored, M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistols (CQBP), plus spare parts and logistical support for the pistols. The new version of the semi-automatic .45-caliber pistol, CQBP, is a descendant of the Colt M1911 first used by the military in 1911.
Pat Sajak on Obama's You-Didn't-Build-It defining moment:
It's as if President Obama climbed into a tank, put on his helmet, talked about how his foray into Cambodia was seared in his memory, looked at his watch, misspelled "potato" and pardoned Richard Nixon all in the same day.
James Cameron channeled his inner historian, Oliver Stone.
It isn't that Cameron didn't get a lot of the basic history right as a skeleton. And the identity of many passengers, the clothing they wore and so on were historically dead on (as usual in modern cinema). He did have some errors, such as paintings by Picasso and Monet that were not on the ship, but for the most part the decor and so on was dead on. But there were a host of errors, deliberate falsehoods, and even cruelly insulting injustices in not just Cameron's movie but previous efforts.
5 Things Modern Kids Don't Understand About Being a 'Nerd'
Sure Hollywood caters to the nerd demo now but just a decade or two ago they were a stigmatized underclass who were regularly beaten like the gheys and considered even uncooler:
And if you cared too much about it, like if you owned your own Starfleet uniform, you hid that shit like a fetish. You were flat out persecuted for your taste in entertainment, and I don't mean that you were just made fun of. You got bullied, beaten up, or just trolled out of existence. Not in Internet chat rooms like today, where your real identity is hidden under a ridiculous handle like "b0n3r_whip69xxx." But right out in the real-life public where everyone you know could see your humiliation. There was no logout option when you found yourself dangling from a stop sign by your underwear, your Captain Kirk outfit in shreds at your feet and your asshole throbbing from the cotton burn.
But at least the Trekkies were still higher on the nerd food chain than fantasy geeks and furries.
New Egyptian TV Station Run By Women
And no this isn't a parody.
Wearing veils and dressed in black from head to toe, these women are symbols of Egypt's cultural revolution following the Arab Spring. They are employees of Maria TV, a new satellite news channel that features only women wearing full Islamic attire.
Men are banned from the show, even on phone-ins, and all staff, including those behind the camera, also wear veils.
Also Candid Camera Does Not Translate into Egyptian
Here Egyptian celebrities are being interviewed for a TV show and as part of a gag the producer lets 'slip' that they're Israelis. Watch them become violent and nearly shooty.
Sure one of the celebrities slaps around the female interviewer (then later tries to pick her up) but to be fair that was only because he thought she might be a Joo. Thoughts on what this means for Egypt here.
Archaeologists have unearthed several 600-year-old bras that experts say could rewrite fashion history. While they'll hardly send pulses racing by today's standards, the lace-and-linen underpinnings predate the invention of the modern brassiere by hundreds of years. Found hidden under the floorboards of Lengberg Castle in Austria's East Tyrol, along with some 2,700 textile remains and one completely preserved pair of (presumably male) linen underpants, the four intact and two fragmented specimens are believed to date to the 15th century, a hypothesis scientists later confirmed through carbon-dating.
...While medieval-written sources sometimes mentioned "bags of the breasts," "shirts with bags," or "breast bands," history has shown little indication that bras with clearly visible cups existed before the 19th century, according to Beatrix Nutz, an archaeologist with the University of Innsbruck who made the find. "My first thought was what probably anybody would have thought, 'That´s impossible, there aren´t such things as bras in the 15th century,'" Nutz tells Ecouterre
PSA For Men: Never Let Your Wife Move in a Lady Friend
Because if you're not sleeping with them, you are being replaced. I've seen this happen in real life to a minister and his family so it does happen.
As Kirstie Maguire and Aimee Watson coo over baby clothes they look like any other friends. But the two women are actually a couple expecting their first child together after Kirstie left her husband, Dave, to be with Aimee.
In a further twist, Aimee was living with Kirstie and husband Dave as a 'friend' while the two women carried on their secret affair for three months behind his back.
Kirstie, who has three kids with Dave, says: 'Nobody is more surprised than us at the way things turned out. I was a married woman and never planned to have an affair, least of all with another woman.
'But we're both so happy and can't wait for our son to be born.'
You know who's not so happy? Dave and the three kids.

I wonder if the sexual orientation of women in pre-monagamistic (is that a word?) societies tended to also be fairly fluid?
Grognar the chieftain might have had a dozen wives AND have been off in the field for significant parts of the year. And while fooling around with Lowly the swinheard might get your head chopped off...I doubt liasons with other wives would draw much concern.
Clearly, I need a large grant from the government to study this.

Just firin' up a new law firm (all by my wittle self) and leaving the shitbirds in the dust. It's been good but head splodin' crazy, wrote myself the 7/15 paycheck today, finally, dashed it over to the bank. Hollywood Forever is awesome, the people who made that happen are true American capitalist-pig heroes to me. And, yeah, THEY made that. I'd go, but I don't actually go out after dark, lol

You're probably not far off the mark. Men who are homosexual benefit the tribe because they can still contribute to it's support while not competing for women. Women who are bisexual share a husband but also form bonds with each other, ensuring stability and creating an incentive to protect and help each other's children.

With a standard revolver the force of the round results in the "kick" as the force rotates the firearm into an upwards direction.
The Rhino just takes all of that energy and instead of rotating the weapon letting your wrist tendons take the brunt, puts the force longitudinally and breaks your forearm.
Thing is awesome and even as a revolver hating guy, I want one. But like all CCW weapons: I hope to God I never have to fire it.

I used to think he was a shitweasel loser actor, too & then I saw him in The Aviator, which was a film about Howard Hughes. My dad worked for Hughes in the 50s and 60s (he was part of the Mormon Mafia before he had to quit because he got jaundice, which meant that Hughes fired him ASAP), so I have always been fascinated by this semi-mythical American phenomenon. I have to say, DiCaprio is absolutely outstanding in that film. It is a real pleasure to see him portray a genius slowly sinking into madness and decay as his mental state deteriorates.

The 5.7mm is the most overrated handgun cartridge in human history. It's an overblown .22 Mag. Yes, Nidal Hassan used it at Hood, but look at his ratio of "shots fired to killed." You had a lot of wounded people at Hood, and really not many dead ones. Hassan could have done a lot more damage with a .45 if he'd practiced his speed-reloads.
Even the venerable 7.62mm Tokarev is better on punching holes in most armor- same reason the Hong Kong cops had to get special vests to deal with all the ex-ChiCom Toks floating around.

Yup. Obama's All In now on a GOTV (Get Out The Vote) strategy. He is going to be nasty and divisive all the way up to election day.
He sees his only hope as getting his various client groups to come out and bring the rest of the Dems with them.
His problem is that his strategy is contradictory. He's so polarizing, the more he panders to each interest group, the more he pisses off the middle. And of course the Right is already pissed off and ready to vote for ABO.

Even the security guards were not allowed to be armed. That's an open invitation to people who want to kill. Concealed carry decreases crime. Why is that not a news headline?

At a news conference Tuesday night, police Chief David Brown said when three officers surrounded the house on Borguin Street responding to a 911 kidnapping call, four people ran from the residence from the front door and from windows.
Brown said veteran Officer Brian Rowden began a foot pursuit of 31-year-old James Harper. Brown said the two engaged in three separate "physical fights" as the suspect ran down an alley and hopped over three fences.
"After jumping the third fence after Harper, Officer Rowden was basically out of energy and just clinging to Harper, who was beating on him," Chief Brown said. "Officer Rowden states at this time Harper said, 'You're gonna have to kill me.'"

Lincoln with a closed system--one of Ford's dimmer ideas.
You need to find the capacity less the converter amount and add that amount. The converter doesn't drain, which is why you subtract that amount.
What really works is finding a shop that does tranny flushes with a machine designed for doing just that and have them do it.

It has a 30 round capacity and you'll barely notice the slightly longer mag.
Anyone who wants to poo poo it because if it's size should remember, this round will penetrate body armor, and it works really well in the 50 round carbine.
I have my dear old friend, an 1911 I carried when I was in the military and they still let us carry personal weapons (do they still do that?), but there is one truth, if you are not the one to start the gun fight, you'll probably miss hitting anything of importance with a hell of a lot of your first shots. So having 30 tries is a lot better than only having 7. I'm more than happy to hit some targets two or three times. And if it is three 5.7 for every one .45 well great, what happens when your hit rate drops below 30%? With the 5.7 I'm still hitting targets.

Obama's new "I didn't say that" ad really bugs me. It's so "I'm lying to your face, even though I know you can easily check it out for yourself, and see that I am most definitely lying."
That goes way beyond Bill "is is" Clinton, and Richard "I am not a crook" Nixon. I've seen Obama lie - a lot, and I've even seen lie a whole lot at one time - in rapid succession, but this is whole new level, even for him.
It's pathological lying.

Checking "Merkur" in wikipedia, it was made by Karmann.
Found this, too:
In 1968, AMC introduced the Javelin, a new competitor in the U.S. "pony car" segment. AMC did not have a manufacturing subsidiary in Europe, therefore, Karmann assembled the American designed car for distribution in Europe. Karmann built the cars in Rheine with 280 horsepower (209 kW) 343 cu in (5.6 L) V8 engines and they were named "Javelin 79-K".

The 62 F-85 had an option for a turbocharged 215 cubic inch engine that turned out 215 hp. It overheated constantly as owners neglected to keep the coolant for the turbos filled and GM punted on it. The GM A bodies of the early 60s tried a lot of new things, but being GM they gave up on it rather than iron out the problems
The 215 aluminum block was discontinued by GM, but the British liked it, bought the rights from Buick, and was a standard for them for the next 37 years in the Rover

turns out that when a society opposes wealth creation but not wealth consumption, their wealth keeps going down. who-da thunk it?
they are fucked any direction they go. if they let the market-clearing foreclosures take place that will establish a new, solid, but lower price base -- which means less property taxes. it would be the right thing to do, but they have fucked themselves so bad they figger they can't take a short-term hit.
plus, the secret of fucking over a large group of people is to do it to a few at a time. people who have lost their jobs and face foreclosure don't tend to be all that cheerful. and there is nothing more dangerous than a person who has decided they have nothing left to lose.

They made it into your music collection ...
Posted by: A cynical but rarely angry Adriane at July 25, 2012 03:41 AM (qmMAj)
true but shit is depressing. It's like how can a dj like Forrest Hill release 7 amazing singles in a year but they don't sell (hell, they barely got pirated) and then he disappears. If nothing else, at least sharing music online keeps unknown/under appreciated shit relevant and makes it get listened to

chemex is more work but a french press is stupid easy. Dump fresh medium ground beans into press, pour hot water over and let it sit for a few minutes, place plunger into the carafe and press down and you're good to go

I got a little french press, but I'm quite happy with my dinky Mr. Coffee machine.

Will it kill? Well of course silly. But not better than a .45, .40 or even a 9mm.

That must have really hurt him. Heh.
The thing about Obama is that he has that same arrogance about everyone that isn't in his little exalted circle. Remember the "bitter clingers" comment? Same arrogance and contempt.
I look forward to the press conference, because I know they will step in it again What, is Debbie Wasserman-Schults going to turn on her charm? LOL!

At present, no one in power is held accountable for their corruption. But there are yet enough "Tea Party" Americans demanding accountability to make it so, to keep at it with the same dogged persistence as any Joker in Charge. Listening yesterday to Jerry Doyle, he read the current zeitgeist from the banner at Penn State, "Take It Down or We Will." There MUST be consequences. Everyone must be held responsible for their actions. Ex: Fast and Furious. Though the organized crime within government would have it otherwise, enough Americans yet demand responsibility and accountability of "officials" to make it so. That tipping point of moral outrage has erupted, not simply against Obama but the placating McCain Republicans. Republican Leadership, get your damned asses in organized caucus gear and remove Holder from the Justice Department. No lip service. Do it. Or you are accountable, complicit beyond "brainwashing Americans", enabling Holder to remain in power to literally kill rule of law and human beings including good people, law enforcement officers and all those opposing organized crime demanding decency in Mexico as well. From our Western Hemisphere and even compared to the rest of the world, the USA always stood for Rule of Law, the light on the hill that made us exceptional.
The Republican Party wants a great turnout of voters to remove the Democrats from office. Yet the Republican Leadership (McConnell) are biding time, acting concerned, simply waiting the Republican turn to abuse office majority again. Whoever demands support must first prove worthy, producing at the very least constitutional "proof of life" upholding the Rule of Law.

Of the 42 people Hasan shot, 29 of them lived. There likely would have been far less survivors if he was using something equivalent to the standard-issue M9 pistol.

It's quite easy to modify the stock 20-round magazines to reliably hold thirty (30) rounds. Except for first-generation models, the slide accommodates a mount for a micro optic - I use the superb Leupold DeltaPoint Reflex sight. Aftermarket drop-in threaded barrels (EFK Fire Dragon) permit attachment of the Gemtech SFN-57 suppressor.
The high-velocity SS192 ammo was deemed to be "armor-piercing," and thus voluntarily restricted; however, it's still around (and perfectly legal).
The ammo is compatible with both the FNH PS-90 bullpup and the AR-57 upper receiver (which easily mounts to your AR-15 or M-16). Those both use easy-to-load 50-round magazines.

It would be far more accurate to say that if Hasan had used a 9mm he would have shot far fewer people.
As for the notion that a higher percentage of that smaller group then being killed, I refer you to Aurora with it's 12 of 70 ratio.
I lived with and by my 1911 and have great affection for it, but I am not so hung up on caliber that I would be willfully blind to the many benefits of a low recoil high capacity high velocity weapon.
Again, the facts are that people don't hit a damn thing they mean to when they find themselves in an unscheduled gun fight. Having lots of good rounds to send after the first flurry of bad rounds is *a very good thing*. (tm)

WRT the movie theater shooting, how many of those casualties are individual shotgun pellets (looks a lot smaller than 00 Buck too BTW).

Was surprised at the damage the ballistic and hollow point rounds delivered.
Not a big fan of small caliber.....like 45 and up....but this gun was great to shoot...super accurate....and delivered decent damage for the size.
Love it.

Looks like this thread is still alive, so I'll play too.
I saw the Chiappa Rhino some few months agoon GunBroker, and it looks neat. One problem though: the frame is alloy, so the barrel has a steel liner.
Since F=m*a, and assuming the pistol does not move when fired, the Force that propels the bullet is equal to the Force that tries to move the pistol ... that the firer (you) is (are) holding. A heavier (steel frame) pistol will Accelerate slower into the (your) hand than a lighter alloy one.
Effectively, the felt recoil is greater with the lighter frame. This affects the shooter, and with maximum loads, can affect both the gun mechanism, and maybe make the bullets jump their crimp.
I'd really like to see an all-steel version of the Rhino, something weighing maybe 48oz.
