Overnight Open Thread (7-29-2012) - Hasty Edition
— Maetenloch

Since I'm on the road with spotty Internet, tonight's ONT is going to be minimal i.e. whatever I can type into the iPhone.

Aspirin: What Can't It Do?

16 of the creepiest comic book scenes ever

Based on the scenes when it comes to Batman and Robin, there's no gay sub-text - it's pretty much just the text.

12 LOLz at Aunt May. I gotta say, there the comic writer made it too obvious. And by "too obvious" I mean, it looks like she put her hand in semen. From her own nephew's testes and prostate. By means of ejaculation.

I'm not saying I didn't laugh. There's times when hammering at the joke is, itself, funny - but only in an ironical meta sort of way. Here it's just uncomfortable. One panel would have done it.

----------

Yeah, well, I'm a bit annoyed at the NBC Olympics web page.

Figured I'd watch me some fencing action. Dialed up the women's fencing stuff. There are four "pistes", those rectangular box where fencing takes place. What NBC has done is pumped the entire day from each piste into YouTube. When you ask to watch a match, it sends you to one of the videos, *without* any indication of *when* in the video you should watch.

In addition, some of them are just plain wrong. There were six matches in the first round of women's fencing. Since there are only four pistes, they were staged in a group of four followed by a pair.

The video thingie for those extra two send you to the wrong video. The extra pair were played on pistes 1 and 3, but the video link sends you to the videos for pistes 2 and 4.

Pain in the butt.

I'm no fencing connoisseur, but the Egyptian wench that went up against the Libyan in the first round definitely did not look comfortable holding a pointed stick. Maybe she should have stuck with the loganberries.

54 Via WFB: A spokesperson for Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) defended and clarified the Democratic leader’s controversial remarks that Republican Jews are “being exploited” by the GOP during an interview Saturday with the Washington Free Beacon. Pelosi came under fire this weekend for telling Bloomberg’s Al Hunt that Republican Jewish voters are “being exploited” by Republican leaders who aim to turn U.S. support for Israel into a partisan election issue. Pelosi maintained that Republican officials “are using Israel as an excuse” to galvanize voters when “what they really want are tax cuts for the wealthy.” Nadeam Elshami, a Pelosi spokesperson, told the Free Beacon that the Democratic leader was attempting to highlight how Jewish voters of all stripes are “not getting the full facts” when it comes to the issue of President Obama’s relationship with Israel. “What she was referring to here is simply, some of these voters, they are not getting the full facts or are hearing one side only of the story,” Elshami said. “I think that’s the best way to explain it.”

55 What's the overall rate of cancer among those with autoimmune disorders? IIRC, in general, autoimmune disease doesn't increase the risk of cancer overall. However, there is a catch - certain cancer risks are increased in people with particular autoimmune disorders, such as the risk of non Hodgkins lymphoma in people suffering from coeliac disease.

78 #55, Coeliac/Celiac disease strongly increases the risk of various cancers and organ failure if left undiagnosed. 81 Via The Hill: Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and said he would seek to move the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv as president if the Israeli government ascents. “A nation has the capacity to choose its own capital city, and Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said in an interview on CNN, conducted in Jerusalem. “I think it’s long been the policy to ultimately have our embassy in the nation’s capital of Jerusalem.” Romney gave several televised interviews and delivered a speech in Jerusalem during a trip to Israel aimed at emphasizing his ties to the close U.S. ally and boosting his support among Jewish Americans and supporters of Israel. “I would follow the same policy we have had in the past, our embassy would be in the capital, and the timing of that is something I would want to work out with the government,” Romney said. During a separate speech, Romney made a point of referring to Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state. Its status is a critical point of contention in the long-running dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. As a result, recent U.S. presidential administrations have avoided the question and maintained the U.S. embassy presence in Tel Aviv, despite a 1995 law that declares Jerusalem to be the capital.

I have traveled to China and our company has a lot of Chinese employees.  I understand a lot of the problems with China, but I would hesitate to call that country "vile in every way".

I would hate for there to be war between us, as there are literally millions of Chinese that have little choice in what their country and government does, and just want to work hard and survice.

I have had indirect dealing with people in the Chinese government, and to say that they are sinister would  be an understatement.  They have, as a whole, little regard for the millions of Chinese who try to work and prosper in that country.  A lot of Chinese yearn for freedom, and the underground Christian church is growing rapidly there. The future of China is really unwrittem, and nobody really knows how it will turn out.

Absinthe was banned by the Feds (and in France) for years. Someone eventually wore the bureaucracy down. I think it was Ted Breaux, who people think of as the father of the return of Absinthe. It really helped that the thujone that everyone was so worried about isn't really present in large quantities in normal (read: not from Czech) absinthe. So there's a strict limit on the quantity of thujone, which is no problem.

They even found some old bottles from absinthe's original heyday, and tested them -- turned out they would have met the original standards too. So the original ban likely stemmed from drunken Frenchmen, or, more likely, a French market flooded with shoddy absinthe, including with methanol; also getting the green color right is a challenge, so some just threw toxic copper compounds in there and called it good.

A big part of the resurgence, beyond the legend, is that absinthe is hard to get right, so the challenge has energized enthusiast distillers. No coincidence that Leopold, for example, also makes gin, which is another "botanicals in booze" distilled treat.

Swimmers have a lot of upper body muscle and work away a lot of fat. Breasts are largely fat, and women that swim a lot turn that fat into muscle and build up their upper body muscles.  Broader shoulders, slimmer hips.

Yes, very plausible. Absinthe took off when the vines in Europe succumbed to the phylloxera louse. They got some American (immune) rootstocks, and grew some new vines, and in the meantime, the French drinkers had gotten hooked on absinthe. Wouldn't be shocking to learn that the winemakers were less than scrupulous in wrenching the market back.

128 Doug Giles famously did his 10 commandments for dating my daughter.  Mine had a date last night.  I thought I'd write my own.  Did I miss anything?

I. Thou shall understand that your presence doesn't make me happy. And know this: youÂ’re on a short leash. I am watching you constantly. IÂ’m investigating you. And judging you.

II. Thou had better have a life plan. I have worked my butt off providing a good life for my daughter; therefore, youÂ’d better have a clue. You may not know exactly what your career path will be, given your age, but you will convince me that itÂ’s more than sufficient to support my daughter and any potential children.

III. Thou shall not touch my daughter. My daughter has been raised to be a lady. She is my blessing and the jewel of my life.   If you touch her inappropriately, my wrath will rain down upon you so that youÂ’ll wish you were dead.  IÂ’m willing to die to defend my daughterÂ’s honor; are you willing to die to defile it?

IV. Thou shall look me in the eye and shake my hand like a man.  IÂ’m the father of the young lady you want to date. When it comes to my daughter, immature perennial adolescents need not apply.  Act like an adult.

V. Thou shall understand that you are a boy talking to a man.  The law may consider you a man.  I do not.  Even if you have no evil intent towards my daughter, you know nothing.  Wisdom comes from life experience; I donÂ’t care how many stupid philosophy courses youÂ’ve taken.  We are not equals.

VI. Thou shall know that my beliefs are old school.  I am a traditional, God-loving, gun-owning patriotic American conservative.  Do not even think about trying to inculcate my daughter with Marxist, socialist, collectivist dogma.  It wonÂ’t end well.  Capitalism is the greatest system ever invented.   Stop bitching about the “inequities in the system” and go get a job.

VII. Thou shall know that you must respect your body.   Anyone who dates my daughter will dress in a proper manner.  When you show up at my door, you will be respectfully attired; no cut-offs no  flip-flops.  If you show up wearing a wife-beater, IÂ’ll be the one doing the beating.  Tattoos are an unacceptable indication of emotional immaturity to which I will not subject my daughter.  Unless itÂ’s a military tattoo (acceptable), youÂ’d better hide it.  Unless youÂ’re a pirate, men do not wear earrings.  Men, however, do have a respectable haircut and, although a clean-shaven look is preferred, well-groomed facial hair may be acceptable, although youÂ’re pushing your luck.  Oh, and no fatties.

VIII. Transportation matters.  I will not allow you to transport my precious child on a motorcycle. Ever.   Your car doesnÂ’t have to be the latest and greatest, but it must be clean, safe and well-maintained.  I will inspect it.  And donÂ’t even think of showing up at my door in an El Camino or conversion van.  YouÂ’ve got to be kidding me, son.  I was your age once.

IX. Substance abusers R NOT us.  I will not allow my daughter to become involved with a drunk, hype, or stoner.  I know all the signs, and I will cut you off at the knees.  Keep walking.

X. Financial Basket Cases need not apply.  IÂ’ve worked hard to secure my daughterÂ’s financial future, and I will not allow a financial leech to attach himself.  And you know what?  I control the funds, not her.

My boss visited a couple of factories in China that were run by Norinco, which is a front corporation for the PLA.

The company used slave/convict labor.  He said of all the factories he had visited in China, this was the only one that the general manager was almost terrified because there was an agent of the government looking over his shoulder all the time.

I know we are all cynical about our government some times, but as a teenager I actually got to talk to my congressman one-on-one as he was walking the disrict to talk to people.  By himself. He was an extremely bright but very down to earth guy (a Republican, go figure).  I just can't imaging an operative of the Chinese Communist Party being close to the people or openly walking around to meet people.  I've walked the streets of Beijing, and the wealthy and powerful have security guards  outside their houses.  The governor of the State of Ohio lives a couple blocks from me, and while there is always a State Trooper there, he goes out in public all the time (we were at the same restaurant a few months ago).

168 This is...not really surprising.Enjoy the Olympics London! Via The Telegraph: The Foreign Office is investigating reports that British citizens are among Islamist fighters who kidnapped a British photographer and his Dutch colleague in northern Syria. John Cantlie and Dutchman Jeroen Oerlemans were held by the group for a week after they accidentally came across their camp while crossing the border from south east Turkey to report on the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. During their time in captivity they were threatened with death unless they converted to Islam, and both were shot and slightly wounded when they attempted to flee barefoot. They were freed on Thursday night after a group of Free Syrian Army soldiers turned up the camp and angrily demanded that they be released. Mr Cantlie has not yet spoken of his ordeal, but Mr Oerlemans told Dutch media that some of the gang, which is reported to have been between 30 and 100 strong, had “Birmingham accents”. A source close to the incident told The Sunday Telegraph that there possibly at least six men with British-sounding voices, including one with a heavy south London accent. “Nobody is quite sure yet how many, but these people generally travel in small groups of about half a dozen,” the source said.

Sounds like oxidation. What's the color like?

Might be that adding sulfur (not sulfur, but whatever sulfur compound winemakers use) would have prevented that. Also, what sort of grapes? If not vitis vinifera, ten years is a heck of a long time.

Hmmm. There are no pink chardonnay grapes that I know of. Commercial "pink chardonnay", if such a thing exists, and it probably does, is, I imagine, made by mixing in just a bit of red wine, for color. Either your grapes are wine grapes (vitis vinifera) or they're something else. If they're something else, you can make wine, and you may like it (I usually don't, because of animal-fur flavors), but aging is asking too much.

Amber color is easy -- that's oxidation, for sure.

Skyrocketing alcohol is not so easy, within my limited knowledge. It's easy to say that it indicates continued fermentation, because what else would produce alcohol? But if that happened in a sealed bottle, the result ought to be fizzy. Where else would the gas go?

I especially like the way it's not supposed to be tyranny if the nice government functionary merely shows up to give you a lecture every time you ask for the forbidden thing. But it's your choice, really.

If Bloomberg had his way, we'd each have an in-home nanny when we woke up, asking us: are you sure you want that bacon? Really sure?  It's your choice, but...

273 splunge ---wine

It's an unusual story, my sister grew the grapes, I have no idea of their origin, tho I would guess they were vinis vetifera, ordered from a catalogue.

My sister passed away suddenly, and I collected the grapes from her place, and started looking into wine making, for sentimental reasons. We were close.

It makes no sense that once the wine was bottled, that it could still be absorbing enough oxygen to continue fermenting. Or I would have bottles of old wine vinegar.

I'm no wine making expert, but the little I do know is that this is a rare occurence, from all I can surmise.

It re-affirms that we don't know how much we don't know.

350 @128 That is a fine list that is guaranteed to make you feel very manly.
It's sure to succeed. My dad had a similar one, and my sister is a lesbian.
You should expect at least that good a result.

On mangoes, sugar, and yeast: The trick with any fruit that has tasty skin (and with a lot of grapes in the Midwest) is to get a brisk fermentation going before airborne native yeasts can infect the wort. Some cause vinegar (beware -- accidentally tasty vinegar is an OK spice, but its acidity is unpredictable and it's not safe to use for pickling or marinade); even more destructive is white-film "bottle mold," that feeds on your alcohol and slowly turns wine back into watery juice.

I've had good luck using the much stronger distiller's yeast, started in sugar and yeast nutrient, with the fruit washed in Campden-tablet solution, cut up and gently crushed. Add the sugar in stages to keep the yeast going, and don't stop until it does. It will taste fierce at first, but after settling out (and settling down!) yields a nice dessert wine with a lot of brandy character. Plums come out almost like Slivovitz, worth aging in wood.

Just keeping your fermenting vessel lab-clean is not enough when you work with real fruit instead of canned juice. You'll usually have to find a safe way to "sterilize" the fruit too, or lost a lot of batches to wild bugs.

373 So this is bullshit.

Some lawyers are suing Netflix. They offer me the option of dropping out of their class action lawsuit if I ask them, nicely.

The goals of the lawsuit?

In addition, Netflix will pay $9 million into a Settlement Fund to:
• Make donations to Court-approved not-for-profit organizations, institutions, or programs.
• Pay notice and settlement administration expenses.
• Pay attorneysÂ’ fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
• Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs.

I am so glad I don't have TV...haven't for 3 years now.  Wonder how many thousands of advertisements I didn't pollute my mind with. I might go back to TV with the digital broadcast thingy, but I'm in no hurry.  These days I've been tearing down the back porch of my house to make room for one bigger and better.  You'd think the one they built way back in the day (poorly at that) was a refuge for spiders, wasps and the occasional squirrel.  And apparently there was no such thing as building codes then, either

There have been plenty. Consider Talia Al'Ghul, the mother of Batman's son Damian, the current Robin.

It's a nice twist. Traditionally, the role of Robin was to keep Batman human rather than becoming something like the Punisher. But Damian was raised from birth to be a super-assassin, the family business on his mother's side. So instead Batman has to work on keeping Robin human.

And what was he supposed to do? It isn't like he killed some innocent person. (B and R #7) This was somebody who'd done Batman some serious harm and had seriously injured Damian. He then declared that he would be back to finish the job if he wasn't stopped then and there. So Damian punched a couple fingers into his skull.

Plenty of others in a similar situation would done the same and Batman understands his personal ethos is regarded as insane by many who are otherwise on his side. How many has the Joker murdered because he can only be captured and never put down permanently? At what point is an ethos instead a psychosis?

Batman doesn't want Damian to be a casual killer and especially not his grandfather's heir but was killing Nobody something he could really defend as utterly wrong?

402 Damian went into the sewers and hacked a guy's head off to prove himself to Batman. He showed the man's head to him. Batman said "don't do that again" and shrugged, basically. I stopped reading it after that, it was so blatant they were just rewriting the entire character so they'd have Damian around as a 'badass' Robin. Batman would have hauled his murdering ass to prison, not shrugged.

The BH can't be an emancipated woman unless we have a cleaning service -- so I do about four hours of prep each month, the service comes in for an hour and a half, and domestic tranquility is maintained. Go figure.

The BH's diet has run its appointed course, and she's trying to transition to real-life. She's lost a solid chunk of weight (inside baseball -- I had a staffperson working for me at my last gig who was a diminutive Philippina with the same name as my BH....the joke was that I'd work with "Little BH" telling her what to do, then go home to "Big BH" and have her tell me what to do. Big BH has now lost more weight than Little BH actually weighed.) She's looking better, feeling better, on about 1/20th the perpetual medications she'd been on, and gets antsy if she doesn't run me up and down the local mountain trails every weekend.

My take is that there will be a certain amount of residual paranoia for a while, but that she's got the tools and will to maintain this new weight indefinitely.

Back in the 90's, my dad worked downtown and lived up in the Santa Clarita area. One day, on his way home, he started feeling weird pangs in his chest. Channeling Fred Sanford, he was thinking, "You hear that, Elizabeth? I'm coming to join ya, honey! [N.B. -- my mom's name is not Elizabeth]" -- so he pulled off in the Valley and went to the big Kaiser in Northridge. True to form, they let him wait for hours and sent random tests to him in no particular order. After significant time had passed, a doctor came in and said, "Mr. Oldcthulhu, I'd like you to begin this morning and tell me about every cup of coffee you've had."

"Well, the alarm went off, and I got up and turned on the coffee pot.....and I got stuff together and had a cup, then went in and took a shower. Then I had another cup with breakfast and filled my thermos......" By the time he was relating his drive home, he'd had 23 cups.

The doctor looked at him silently for a while, then said, "don't do that" and left.

438 Problem with coffee is it's ubiquitous -- and people have it for social reasons. So you can start getting into wild amounts very quietly and without noticing. If anyone had told my dad, "hey, we're going to feed you 23 cups of coffee and see if you have a coronary!" -- he would have declined.

Don't recall the event. Was that while Bruce Wayne was believed dead and Dick Grayson was being Batman? If it was before the reboot it may not be part of the continuity anymore. The event I referenced was just a three or four months ago. It has a big role in the current storyline in which Damian and the previous Robins are in conflict.

Which gets into another complex situation. Damian is Bruce Wayne's biological son but they've only known each other a short time. As far as being the son of Bruce Wayne the man as opposed to Bruce Wayne's gonads, Dick Grayson has a much better claim. While the other Robins had a less parental relationship with Batman, they each knew him better during their tenures.

447 Just as well I never got into the coffee habit. I never saw the attraction of a lot of things that supposedly marked maturity. Never cared for booze. Tried tobacco and wondered what the hell was wrong with these people.

I was always too cheap for drugs and pot. I tried them a fair amount in my teens but the desire was never stronger than my other financial goals. (Bad enough what I did spend so much money on, in retrospect.)

Just as well I suppose. With my inclination to depression I would likely have been a spectacular drunk or junkie.

Wieber did fine.  She was fucked by the anti-competitive Olympics.  Only two gymnasts from any country are allowed in the individual finals, so even though Wieber easily beat every single gymnast from all the other countries (except for one) she is out of the finals because two Americans did better than her in the prelims.  Wieber came in fourth in the prelims but is out for the finals so we can "spread the medal wealth around".  Fucking sports marxists.

As I have maintained, the Olympics is a bullshit pseudo-competition that has very little to do with athletic excellence and seeing who is actually the best in anything.  It's a Eurotrash, tribalistic raft of shit that should be flushed down the toilet.  Eurotrash assholes destroy everything.  It's all they can do anymore.  They are like the plague.

Sfter I saw the headline that Wieber had missed the all-around finals, I went to the olympic site to see how poorly she had done.  All I could get was a list (over and over) that had her in 4th (Americans 3 of the top 4 prelims).  I figured I must have not been able to find the rest of the prelims.  But each list had the same team scores and same list and I figured that it was just a shitty web site.

Then I find out that the web site was fine and it was just the olympics that was shitty - even shittier than I had originally thought.   I hated the restrictions on nations only sending a certain number of athletes to events, even if others might still be among the best in the world, but I hadn't even imagined that they would cull down from prelims based on nationality, again.  WTFFF?  My already low opinion of the Olympics went down 3000% from already being at ground level.  Add all the official cheating in and it's ... I don't even know what it is.  A Bulgarian State Washing Machine, I guess, but without a tumbler or a door.

The storyline where Damian kills spook was when Morrison first started writing the character and when he was still in full League of Assassins mode. Batman decided he was not irredeemable.

Later, while driving the Batmobile, he knocks an ambulance off a bridge but the only person in the ambulance was the Joker.

The bit with Batman and the baby is an emergency tracheotomy to save the baby's life. The thought captions show Batman's concern over the inadequacy of the instrument he is using.

474 Remember when DC used to do 'imaginary stories' about imaginary characters way back when? Elseworlds is a high falutin' version of that.

Much of them seem to owe a lot to the old SNL sketch of 'what if' scenarios, especially the one about baby Superman's ship landing in Germany and Dan Ackroyd portraying the grown Ubermensch.

One of the Elseworlds was a Superman raised in the USSR called 'Red Son.' Another had a vampire Batman. And so on.

Marvel has of course done their own version of this with their 'What If' series. And the Exiles series. And just sidetrack stories like the recent parallel universe story that that tracked the history of one one of the numerous Reed Richards duplicates. This one from a world where Germany won WWII. This Reed lobotomizes a young Victor Von Doom to add that bit of brain to his own as an enhancement. For starters.

Posted by: a cynical but rarely angry Adriane at July 30, 2012 03:20 AM (qmMAj) I loved the "the plan" game in Farscape. It started with John C.'s "I got a plan," followed by people arguing over who got to make the plan, followed by just accepting that the plan sucks whoever came up with it. Finally, Crichton announces is "cold war" plan, one of the warring parties accuses him of being crazy, and Aeryn Sun said "Isn't it fun?" The series was so awesome because it was Mad as a Hatter. It almost entirely failed to make sense in the most sensical way I've ever seen.

Tony Stark by a huge margin.

Bruce Wayne started on his obsession at a very early age and the playboy Bruce Wayne was always a manufactured image to make sure nobody would believe this guy was Batman.

Tony Stark never pretended to be Tony Stark. The Iron Man job was a matter of circumstance that occurred well into his adulthood. If he'd stayed away from personal visits to war zones the hookers and blow every night might have gone on for decades. Even if he still invented the Iron Man he would have sold it to SHIELD and never piloted it himself.

Speaking of which, Tony Stark was supplying SHIELD with technology before Nick Fury was brought on as Director. In fact, in the original story that launched SHIELD in the Marvel Universe it was Tony Stark who first brought Fury to the Heli-Carrier and offered Fury the job. And Stark has a demonstrated ability for prosthetics, having built a powerful replacement arm for Misty Knight.

So why did Stark never make a replacement for Fury's lost eye? Lack of depth perception must be a serious handicap for the guy.
