What Makes America the Greatest Country in the World?
Well per Aaron Sorkin in The Newsroom: nothing
There's absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number 4 in labor force, and number 4 in exports. We lead the world in only 3 categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom are allies.
Okay a lot of these statistics are rather bullshitty and this is a classic example of liberals loving the America that could be rather than the one we have.
But of course what truly makes the US great is our overall score which include among other things the ideals we hold ourselves to, the opportunities and freedom available to everyone, the minor miracles of accomplishments that happen daily, plus a long-running stable, robust culture and government along with a certain coolness factor and joie de vie.
That's a quite rare combination and the reason why the lines to get into the US are so much longer than say Norway.
Update: Slate also gets in on the America-not-so-great bandwagon.Don't be these guys. Let your drunker, not-so-close acquaintances be these guys.

Pardon the expression, but when the guys got together to go to what they always called "t*tty bars." Weird, huh? It just bothered me. That's when I knew I was different.I just never got it. Those kind of places just never did and still don't "do" anything for me.
...If people want to judge me, talk about me behind my back ... there goes the guy who doesn't like big t*ts. Fine. Go for it. I don't care anymore.
I'm out. I like myself. The fact is, I like small breasts, always have, always will, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.
Well we're a big-tent party so I guess if we can accept the libertarians and the Irish, we can somehow accept the non-breast-men too. But just never, ever let them onto the entertainment planning committees.

About a week ago, I asked supporters like you to share your thoughts on how you want to see this campaign shape up. I'm thrilled to share that hundreds of thousands of supporters responded -- and I wanted to make sure you know it's not too late to add your voice.
The feedback we're getting from this survey is already helping shape the campaign. As we make important strategic decisions over the final four months, your input would mean a lot. Can you take a minute to answer a few questions?
Here are just a few things we've learned from the first respondents:
-- This campaign is made up of a wide range of voices -- one in five respondents identify as health care professionals, one in five as veterans or current military members, one in five as business owners or entrepreneurs, and one in four as students.
-- Of the various reasons listed for supporting this campaign, there was a clear standout: This election should be decided by everyday Americans, not by special-interest and PAC spending. (And we agree.)
-- More than 80 percent believe this will be a very close race.
Early results like this tell me a lot of good things about this campaign and our supporters. We're coming together to build something special -- and it's going to take all of us to get it done at the end of the day.
The stakes in this election are too high to sit back right now. This is your chance to have your voice heard and help shape the campaign:

>>"The President promised us our premiums would go down $2,500 per family per year if we passed his reform; family premiums increased 9 percent last year. President Obama promised us we could keep our plans and our doctors; as many as 20 million Americans will lose their employer-provided health plans. President Obama promised us he would “protect Medicare;” Medicare’s Chief Actuary says the Obamacare cuts to providers are “unrealistic” and not sustainable, and millions of seniors will lose access to Medicare Advantage plans and benefits. The President promised us he wouldn’t raise taxes on middle class families making less than $250,000 a year; Obamacare raises taxes on health plans, medical devices, prescription drugs, and employers, and 75% of the individual mandate tax will fall on the middle class. Over 20 million individuals will remain uninsured, and health care spending will be higher than it would have been if the law had not passed. President Obama campaigned against Hillary Clinton’s individual mandate and John McCain’s tax increase on generous health care insurance, and included both in Obamacare.<<"

It also include births of infants born below a certain weight. We count them in our statistics so if they die ours go up. WHO doesn't require it so many places like Cuba get to be ahead of us because they can just let underweight babies die without affecting their ranking.

Most of our illiteracy in Language and Mathematics is derived from the influx of illegal border crossers and visa overstayers and their progeny.
Remove those numbers and the US does quite nicely.
Which is another reason all those other countries do better; all their citizens are of one racial group with the same local ethnicity and mores.
The US on the other hand is a blend of cultures and races with language, mores ethnicities and religions mixed together intermingling and rubbing each other the wrong way.
It's one of the US's many charms.

The Framers declared their independence from a huge, efficient and all-powerful central government 236 years ago.
Alas, no. George III never had nearly as much power over his American subjects as our own government has over us now. As a matter of fact, the revolution started as a way of preserving the status quo, of keeping the colonists' existing rights as English subjects from perceived attempts to turn back towards absolutism, and only got into the grand, universal ideals stuff when we realized that we had to declare ourselves independent to keep what we already had as British subjects! It was an essentially conservative revolution, at least at the beginning, and in that may lie the reason why it never headed into guillotine territory and dictatorship.

When Sorkin and his fellow Hollywood elitist leftists are begging for change on Sepulveda Blvd, then America may have a chance to reclaim greatness
There's absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science
Yet we're number 1 in spending per student. What's Sorkin's flippant 60 minute solution for that?

There are so many things wrong with this statement. Ranking is useless without knowing some details about the distribution of scores. 7th in literacy when you have 97% literacy and the 1st place has 99% is a lot less shocking. It's the same with the math and science scores. We score something like 50-60 points less than the 1st place scores, a difference of usually less than 10%. The question is do we want to spend the resources to move up in place, or do we want to direct those resources towards a better return somewhere else.

Yeah, fuckwad uses his (previously unknown in history) constitutionally protected freedoms to amass tens of millions of dollars in the free market of history's oldest democracy, protected by a fighting force and people that has borne the brunt of seeing off the world's various totalitarian movements, allowing the rest of the West to blow their wads on candy ass 'social goods' while America continues to lead the world in technological innovations which have lifted billions out of poverty and horrible suffering....but yeah, America isn't the greatest country in the world.

People, get over your acute funk. If we let this stuttering bumblefuck of a dork president buffalo this country with his band of incompetent goofs, then we are not nearly as tough and resilient as we thought we were. Brave men have given up all their tomorrows in far away places, far from home, that we might live in Freedom. I'll be damned if I let this blithering loser of a president and his ninny sycophants undermine that which was so nobly and terribly paid for.
When I was a kid, my Mom told me we never got as close to a dictatorship as we were under Franklin Roosevelt. We somehow survived that madness (although the damage he did to the Republic still is with us today), and shook a lot of it off. We will shake off this nonsense too. It is going to be painful and difficult, but this is not a job for weak willies. Some of us won't live long enough to see this corruption upended completely, but as sure as day follows night, we will overcome this idiocy of the Obama era, and this country shall see a new birth of freedom

It started back during LBJ and Medicare/Medicaid. That's when the 'crats interferred with the doctor patient relationship and started telling doctors how much they were worth.
The doctors thought it would be neat to have a secure paycheck until the government started screwing them on payments and being slow in paying and all the paper work but by then the system was entrenched and the distortion in the Medical Industry was too far gone to retrace the steps.
It will get worse under ACA and there' s limited time window to stop it. Trouble is it still will leave us with a distorted system that many depend on for their livelihood and for their life.
I don't have a workable answer and really, neither does either party.

We lead the world in health care innovation, which is why a lot of countries are expecting ObamaCare to be bad for them because their own nationalized systems produce few advances.
We also foot the bill for nearly all of the new drug development because we're just about the only place on the planet that doesn't threaten to violate patents if we don't get the goods for the same price as a generic of a drug introduced thirty years ago.
Say goodbye to both of those. Without a profit motive the business of drug research is likely to grind to a halt. Research is too easy to cut when the takers are demanding more free doses of the existing stuff.

Goes back farther than that. The wage freezes ordered by FDR turned medical insurance from an obscure little corner of the business into a very useful bargaining tool for convincing someone to leave a job for your company when it was illegal for you to simply offer more money.
Typical hamfisted social engineering from the FDR crowd. By the time the wage freezes were relaxed the growth in medical insurance had the insurance industry abuzz at the potential for a new growth sector. Naturally, the incumbents formed lobbying associations to conspire against new competitors. They also came up with new scheme to replace the wage freeze as a means to make medical insurance into a major employment perk. In 1953 they bought enough influence to get Congress to pass a law that gave a hefty tax break to large employers who offered coverage. Those big companies loved it because it in turn gave them another weapon against new entries to their respective fields.
This in turn gave the bleeding hearts, who'd long pushed for following the UK nationalization of medical services, a new approach to getting the government involved.
Not quite a march through the institutions but very similar.

Any nation dependent on another for its defense is a vassal. We don't exert our will over Europe overmuch but we don't really want to be responsible for them. It was simply a lot cheaper for us to take on the job of keeping the USSR in check than let Europe descend into war again. Especially with the knowledge that the oceans wouldn't serve as an effective barrier much longer as long range aircraft development continued.

I will try and recall some history of San Marino. If I recall they elected a Marxist government in the 1950's and then, after it went to hell, threw them out in a popular election. For many years that was the only Communist government overturned peaceably.
They are quite old, from the top of my head the 9th Century or so?

You can check just the regular wikipedia, and it makes it sound like the fascists gained power through the government so I don't know if that would be considered a break, since later on the Communists gained power there through democratic means as well.

"There's absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number 4 in labor force, and number 4 in exports. We lead the world in only 3 categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom are allies."
Right. So if we are going with junk statistics, I'll stick with junk confirmation sources. According to Wikipedia:
The U.S. is tied at 10th in literacy with several other nations. Above us are such nation as . . . Kyrgyzstan? at 99.3% Funny though, the individual article for Kyrgyzstan lists its literacy rate at 98.7% - for a nation of semi-nomadic herders. Top of the list of course is Cuba, with a literacy rate of 99.9%. I'm sure. Hmm, what's that note? "Data refer to national literacy estimates from censuses or surveys conducted
between 1995 and 2005, unless otherwise specified. Due to differences in
methodology and timeliness of underlying data, comparisons across countries and
over time should be made with caution. For more details, see Unesco.org." Oh. So basically they pulled some numbers out of their butts for a bunch of these countries and figured nobody would notice the difference.
Right then, so essentially the U.S. is in a tie for first for literacy with a ton of other nations at 99%.
As for math and science, we may be 27th and 29th, but it looks like we are 2nd in patents applied for and granted, and 1st in patents in force to Japan. That's not particularly awesome given relative population, but we still manage rather well.
For infant mortality, that was covered in an article recently. It seems Sorkin read the chart wrong, and the U.S. is 178th from the bottom, that is around 35th overall. Of course it also seems that most of the countries above us on the list quirk their reporting for premature and low birthweight babies, not actually counting them as "live births" unless they survive 24+ hours depending on the country. How much of an effect that has on the overall standings is difficult to tell, but it would also have an effect on overall life expectancy rankings.
Looking at median income, it seems we are actually tied for second with Norway, with Luxembourg beating us both out by $3K. How horrible that a pocket nation in the Alps is doing 10% better than us.
The next two are particularly fun. We are 4th in labor force - well, Wikipedia says we are 3rd - and 4th in exports - though Wikipedia says we are 2nd. So that's two errors to begin with. What is more important is that we are . . . 3rd in population. Gee, you think the country with the most people would have the largest labor force, wouldn't you? And that would mean it would have the largest exports. Hmmm . . . No, that would make sense. Note: we do drop a rank in labor force and exports if the EU is considered a single country, but then we also drop a rank in population. Further, it should be noted that the countries with more population that us, China and India both about 4x our population, and the EU at about 1.6x our population, have generally proportional labor forces, but with exports, China has about 1.2x our exports, India has about 1/5th, and the EU has about 1.4x our exports, so on a per capita basis we easily beat them, though of course we are beaten by a host of smaller countries, including various "constituent elements" of the EU, and even by Puerto Rico when treated separately.
Now for the bad.
Yes, we have the per capita number of inmates. We also have the most excessive drug laws without execution, which pretty much everyone acknowledges is the cause of that. I'll leave rants on legalization to others.
For number of adults who believe in angels, I call outright lie. Islam has angels, and we know the survival rate for heresy against Islam, so clearly Islamic countries have a much higher rate of people who believe in angels. That would almost certainly mean that Indonesia, which has about 2/3rds our population but is heavily Islamic almost certainly has a greater raw number of non-atheists who believe in angels or other spirits.
As for defense spending, yes we do spend several metric buttloads. There has also not been a major international war in 67 years. Especially, there has been no European war in 67 years, particularly among those nations that our military spending has supported. While I'm sure it is a horrific thought to proper "progressive" idiots like Sorkin and his Eurotrash cohorts that said massive American spending has maintained a worldwide Pax Americana for 2/3rds of a century, and indeed even irks quite a few reasonable Americans that so much of our wealth goes for ungrateful Eurotrash, the general benefits of said Pax Americana are hardly to be sneered at. And of course that leaves aside that we can spend so much in the first place, an achievement not to be casually dismissed.
Meanwhile . . .
We are 1st in number of immigrants.
We are 1st in giving humanitarian aid.
We are 1st in giving private humanitarian aid.
But then far be it for "progressives" to think those might make the U.S. the "best" at something.

Men who prefer smaller breasts usually just prefer smaller women, period. A fit, tight-bodied little thing isn't as likely to have a huge floppy rack as a chunkier girl (though there are nitable exceptions to the rule.) There's nothing unusual or queer about it.
PC-era "body acceptance" bullshit has given rise to the supersized ghetto booty ideal. Just ask your grandfathers if they ever chased girls with beerguts and divergent udders. Femininity had changed.

--I have not the time even to scan the above 465+ comments but it's worth noting in passing that libtard policies (e.g., mass immigration of illiterates, shitty teacher unions) like the ones Sorkin adores are part of the reason those stats are depressed.

Are you kidding?
'Deep Impact'.....centered around liberal news caster, Tia Leone, dripping with lots of liberal, touchy-feely people, showing them dealing with "omg we're going to die".
Versus...
'Armageddon'.....centered around all-go-no-quit Harry Stamper, Bruce Willis, and his roughnecks, with great meteor scenes tearing up shit, great gadgets, tech gear and strippers on the side.

Act of Valor is great; even if you know zilch of the background it's a fun action movie and patriotic (but of course if you know the background, it is 100x the awesome).
Also saw for the first time an all-time Hollywood Golden Age epic: Qvo Vadis. Awesome performances, and I was laughing aloud (and not just solely because of my buzz) at the stark similarities between Nero and a certain contemporary SCOAMF: accusing the mob of ingratitude; whining about lack of privacy; wrecking the Eternal City to realize his grand vision; and on and on. Damn, I was not even alive when Hollywood stopped making 'em like they used to.
Happy Independence Day, y'all!

The infant mortality stats are b*llshit. There is a huge difference in how infant mortality is counted in the US versus other countries.
For example in some countries if a baby is born live but dies within 48 hours it is not counted as a live birth. Or if the baby is under a certain weight and dies. Instead it is listed as a stillbirth. So it doesn't show up in the infant mortality statistics.
The US counts babies live at the moment of birth. Aggressive neonatal care in the US skews the statistics even more

Even though it felt like the earth shifted beneath our feet last week, with Roberts doing what he did.....I still have hope, that we can get things back on track.
It will take a while, though.
And if we can't.....and things go even further down this dark path that we've been put on....into chaos and anarchy....

I offer Amchitka. We could remove everything except 5 quonset huts: one would be painted white - the whitehouse -- the rest would be ladies barracks, gents barracks, assembly hall, and mess hall. Your choice on indoor/outdoor plumbing, cuz I don't care.
The only other amenity would be gun emplacements to sink the lobbyist yachts.
Even if we had a rule that the bastards could not leave until they passed a balanced budget, I guarantee no legislative session would last over 3 weeks. Preznit JEF would be required to spend 50 weeks/year in the white house, or ....tweezer/stapler time!!

There was a link from that "Best sword reviews" to a list of photobombs, one of which was at the Duomo in Milan. That got me googling the Duomo in Florence, where I was on 9/11, literally, as I got drunk and hung out on the steps of the Duomo that night with a friend and some random Europeans. Florence and Tuscany in general are awesome.
Beauty isn't everything, but it can make some of the rest less painful.

Melt about a pat and a half of butter in a small skillet over lowest heat. Add a shake of savory, two shakes of dill, three shakes of parsley, a goodly spinkle of garlic, and ample black pepper. Crack in two eggs and stir until (a) uniform and (b) bottom is solidifying.
Turn heat up to high, and start running a turner under the edge to separate. Insert a pat of butter under edge. When omelet slides freely, turn heat to low.
When bubbles at edge turn brown, flip. As soon as possible thereafter, sprinkle on shredded cheese and, if you're lucky, bacon. When cheese melts, fold in half over melted cheese and serve.

Reddi-Bacon (1964) was precooked and there was very little extra fat involved when the foil packets were heated. However, there was occasional slight leaking from torn or damaged foil packages, and that undoubtedly caused some smoking and ruined toasters.
The problems with the packaging was vexing enough to the company that Reddi-Bacon never really made it out of test markets before the product was pulled from the market.
This is why I never heard of it before.

The problems is we have too many bleeding heart liberal dumb asses in congress. That started because in the early 1800s states started removing the requirement to own property to vote. By the 1850s I think all had completed it. I think AL was the last state to remove it (and they had not been a state long).
This allowed the looters to vote. People who had no stake in the system cold now vote themselves bread circuses.
But still this didn't have much impact because the states still jealously guarded their authority vis-a-vis Washington. It wasn't until after the states were eviscerated at the end of the war of 1861 and the start of the progressive era that this folly became the rule of the land and we began the long torturous slide into socialism and now communism.
And we were no longer protected by the court because Adams and Marshall started destroying it in 1801.

His NCO buddy has retracted his letter and demanded it be removed from the website. He has also apologized to his fellow soldiers, saying that he trusted Aden to have told him the truth.
Aden has said nothing but insists that the designation is accurate.

For instance, they decided to have an Orion ship as the only realistic way to reach the comet in time to do anything about it. All well and good. But the ship was a long narrow spindle, the exact opposite of what an Orion ship, propelled by nuclear bombs, would look like.
www.up-ship.com/apr/michael.htm
When the astronomer first detects the comet and plots its course, he does it with far too little data to make any useful analysis. A quick montage sequence could easily have covered that, taking place over a lengthy period as he gets increasingly anxious. This in turn would have made his death by poor driving more believable.
It will always piss me off that the genre owes so much to 'Lucifer's Hammer' and Hollywood will never make that movie. Recall that the climax is a battle to SAVE a nuclear power plant from a horde of former urbanites turned into a nihilist cannibal cult. Some critics have taken this to mean the horde was all of a certain ethnic derivation and pointed their fingers and shrieked like a pod person from the 70s remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers ever since.
Armageddon was a fantasy action movie that made no apologies for being ridiculous. It was a far better movie for its honesty with itself.
