Albeit a well meaning one showing the signing of the declaration of independence as it should have happened:
In fact, the oil-painting version of this event is wrong in almost every respect. The critical vote for independence actually took place on July 2, and John Adams wrote to his wife predicting that that date would "be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary festival." A copy of the final document was sent to the printer on July 4, but that copy is lost, so we have no idea who signed it-possibly John Hancock, possibly others, possibly no one at all. Some of the 56 signatories of the document we have today weren't even present in July, so most historians accept delegate Thomas McKean's 1796 account of the signing: it didn't begin until August 2, when a new handwritten copy, one that had been ordered back on July 19, was presented to Congress. Signatures trickled in for years afterward, and some men who had been instrumental in the declaration's creation, like New York's Robert Livingston, never got to sign. McKean himself didn't add his name until sometimes between 1777 and 1781.
So How Did Fireworks Become America's Fourth of July Pastime?
Because John Adams fucking wanted it that way:
Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed, he envisioned fireworks as a part of the festivities. In a letter to Abigail Adams on July 3, 1776, he wrote that the occasion should be commemorated "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." The first commemorative Independence Day fireworks were set off on July 4, 1777. The Pennsylvania Evening Post wrote that in Philadelphia, "The evening was closed with the ring of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated." The paper noted that "Everything was conducted with the greatest order and decorum, and the face of joy and gladness was universal."

Because you never know when these kind of skillz might come in handy. Note this is a training flight and that includes use of the venerable E6B flight computer.
Despite their age-they have been flying since the 1950s-the B-52 Stratofortress is still the backbone of the US Air Force's strategic bombing force. These jet-powered beasts can deliver up to 70,000 pounds of weapons to any target around the globe. That includes nuclear weapons, of course. This video shows an entire training mission, from pre-flight checks to aerial refueling. It even includes one of those crazy low pass flybys.
This B-52 belongs to the 96th Bomb Squadron, taking off from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, on April 18, 2012.

What I learned from watching the HBO "John Adams" series today. Early presidents had little in the way of pomp, pageantry and "perks" but acted out of concern for the Constitution and the Country.
By comparison, today's presidents are "Royalty in a bubble" and care far more about politics than country.

Slavery has been around for pretty much all of human history.
Or was. Until British, American, and French Christians decided to "enforce their morality" on everyone else and end it.
The places it has existed since the abolition movement are exactly the places where Christianity was not able to exert influence - in socialist and muslim states.

First, the trailers are misleading. It is NOT a kid's movie. It's hard R with profanity and about 5 seconds of breasts. It'a about a bullied kid who gets a big teddy bear for Christmas, and wishes that the bear could be real. Next morning, it is. They grow up together as best friends. The bear is, well, incorrigible, a profanity-spewing, non-PC riot

A man can always choose the right thing. Every single day he can change course.
There was no reason to expect Barack would be a great President, but nothing to stop him from leaving behind his narcissism and immorality either.
One side note, being president actually isn't that hard. Yes it requires leadership, judgement (especially of your appointees), and the ability to make the toughest of choices. But I daresay a significant portion of AoS, were they to throw their hats in the ring and win, would be an above average president...

Hey, its all good. But I have one question for you.
Are you going to finish that?
Posted by: Barack Obama at July 04, 2012 06:25 PM (AUeaU)
If Obamatax isn't overturned, is it ethical to drop your insurance coverage?
I have willingly paid for my own health insurance since I was 22, since it was the right thing to do, the grown up thing to do. I went without, so I could do this grown-up thing.
Maybe it's a character flaw, but if the government says I HAVE to buy something to be a citizen in good standing, that makes me want to aim to misbehave.
The tax would be cheaper than my insurance coverage, and I haven't had a need to see my primary care physician for 3 years.
Part of me feels that's cheating, but I didn't ask the government to force me to buy a product as a condition of being a citizen in good standing.

Blowing entire towns to Mars on live TV is not current policy. Given that the Inter-turban pressure has driven our irhabist enemy beyond deterability I agree with it temporarily.

Agree much with your comment about present-day slavery. However, much of the South of that era forgot about their country's founding, which was the reason there was a war at all. Also, that war wasn't the end of things with Americans of African descent. The end of things happened only in my life time (I'm 50).
That said, my step-dad said something interesting this morning when I talked to him on the phone. (I live in CA; Dad and Mom live in NM.) My parents turned 70 this year and Dad said that theirs was the first generation of black Americans who were truly free to do what they wanted. They could live where they wanted, go to school where they wanted, work where they wanted (mostly), and worship how they wanted.
Dad said that his generation of black Americans squandered their new opportunities, chiefly in the way of worship. He says that we forgot who got us through the bad old days: the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
I reminded him that I knew this to be true. My parents weren't Christians until they were in their 40s and neither I nor my sisters were Christians until we were in our 30s (our parents were, no doubt, praying for us).
Here's the thing: freedom didn't happen in 1863. It happened in 1964. And what you see from black Americans at present stems, for the most part, from two 1960s issues: the extension of real American freedom to her citizens who are black and America's turning away from God. Black Americans got free fifty years ago and we fucked it up. Certainly, we aren't the first to do that. (See: ancient Israel).
Thinkers, please try to remember that.

I guess the thing that grates is a multi-millionaire going on Twitter on Independence Day to whine about Teh Injustice. Did Chris Rock's parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents have it bad? Yes. On the other hand, Chris Rock has a life I will never have (and I don't begrudge him his money or his talent). I used to be an Irish Republican, and one of our annoying traits was to constantly bitch about the whole of British history, especially the famine.
I finally gave that shit up when I realized that the famine was 170 years ago, it did nothing to me personally, no one alive was to blame, and I got a better life than my Irish ancestors because they did get out of that hellhole during the famine.
I do like where you're coming from though. I just disagree with idiots like Mr. Rock, who believe that you can't love your country unless it is entirely sinless in nature.

Three years back when the govt was doing the 2010 census, we census takers had to get a GPS fix on the residences we were looking at, and send the data via hand-held computers to some collector orbiting upstairs.
In the end (or so the story goes) the system was so buggy they had to scrap it, but I often wondered if the co-ordinates were to be used someday to call incoming fire.

baldilocks, thanks for your comments and (IIRC), your service
That newspaper front page is teh awesome, thanks for posting.
And check out the date. June 12, 1942. Memory's suffering from cabernet syndrome, but I believe Coral Sea was early May. That's how long it took for news to travel then - of course it was real news, even censored, compared to today's toxic marinade.
Gotta check it, but I believe the Lexington sailed directly from North Island/San Diego to the Coral Sea engagement, which at the time represented an "express" approach, skipping Pearl Harbor. It was the first Pacific battle driven by code-breaking - we knew the Japs were heading for New Guinea as as a preparation for menacing Australia. Nimitz scrambled Yorktown and Lexington to disrupt.
Japan believed Yorktown was sunk - not unreasonable, but incorrect. The air wing from one of their carriers took significant losses, the other suffered some damage to the ship itself. These two seemingly minor facts contributed directly to the Midway victory. Tokyo did not believe Yorktown was available, as she was, and played a major role. Due to Japanese practice of inseparably pairing air wings and carriers, they kept both Coral Sea carriers out of the Midway fight (Shokaku and Zuikaku) - one without choice due to battle damage, but the other solely because the air wing was under-strength and they would not reinforce from the other carrier (no other carrier power would hesitate to have done so). Thus: four carriers at Midway instead of six, the full Dai Ichi Kido Butai (first mobile striking force).
As for the Fourth - couldn't get into it. Really not feeling much enthusiasm for the current electorate (a country is its people, not lines on a map or words on paper), and speechless beyond word at our collapsed institutions. Snaked a drain, did some gardening, studied more technical aspects of reloading for the M1 Garand, sold some luggage off of craigslist, did laundry, salted some lemons, and will sit on the back porch and puff a cigar while watching (more hearing) the many many fireworks displays just out of sight (all but one or two) in the distance on the coast.
Didn't put the flag out. Reminds me of the rules in Iraq, where we could never display the flag (but I have one that flew briefly over our temporary chancery in the Green Zone - a guerrilla operation a few of us pulled off specifically to generate souvenirs for ourselves). Fireworks are not like the sounds of fun in Iraq. Mortars were sharp cracks, rockets were almost all duds but more of a boom when they weren't, car bombs were deep booms echoing off buildings and across the river.
One election - though I expect it will be an epic blow-out - won't change much, either. The ignorance and ugliness I see in so many "educated" people - the envy, the greed, the racism, the lack of responsibility, the smallness - this has produced the current absurd regime and the lawlessness and collapse of institutions (OK, I'm in CA, which is jaw-droppingly stupid, at least among "educated" people along the coasts). Wine and cigars are nice, though.

220 I think the black churches lost their way when they became politicized during the Civil Rights era. I doubt it was intentional, but they gradually displaced real Christianity with politics. I'm not a big fan of Conservative politicians speaking in churches either, for the same reason. I wish they would stay away. Religion should remain unpolluted.
Posted by: rfichoke at July 05, 2012 12:01 AM (Y1c/9)
There is a lot of info available on the politicization of black pastors and churches with all-black congregations of that era up until now. Simply put: the Organized Left was extremely active there too; they posed as friends. The segregation that existed in the 1960s and before made it easier. Not blaming, just saying.

John Adams was the Man. He knew what America was all about and how to say it:
"The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If ‘Thou shalt not covet’ and ‘Thou shalt not steal’ were not commandments of Heaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society before it can be civilized or made free.”
Adams would have dismembered Benedict Roberts. What he would have done to Barky, many years ago, would have made the Aztecs cringe.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm gonna listen to the hot redhead in the black dress and hit the rack...to sleep, perchance to dream...
Later roonz and roonettez! Maybe tomorrow I'll get on the ONT rather than drive around with the top down...maybe...

it's not as good as I had hoped it would be.
well, I don't know how much to blame it on the edger, and how much to blame it on the fact that I've owned this place for a year now and I haven't done any edging at all, so things are a little overgrown.

What's to celebrate, eh?
Half the country are leeches sucking the life blood out of the other half. Most of the country are half-wit ignoramouses running from fad to fad bleating "baa, baa, baa".
For evidence I give you:
1) Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming and all it's spawn - carbon taxes, drilling moratoriums, killing the coal industry and the power systems that use it, The Smart Car - a death machine for certain, a royal edict that vehicles MUST get 54 miles per gallon - even if it's not scientifically possible, and ever increasing interferrence in our personal lives by an out of control watermellon government at every level.
2) Seven trillion dollars poured down the rathole of The War On Poverty yielding ... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, as the poverty percentage is now and has been throughout the 'war' at 15%, while generations of welfare leeches drain away money from productive folks to no positive effect.
3) Out of control ghetto zombies suffering from Lord Of The Flies Syndrome because we can't say anything "offensive" due to their skin color - it's not PC ya know. White folks are particularly villified as Teh Man Who Is Keepin' 'Em Down while paying the bill and wringing their hands in shame for being white.
4) AND FINALLY - President Obysmal, the crowning glory of PC non-think. Here's a man with zero qualification to be leader of the most powerful country on the planet who was elected because of his skin color while we have so many men and women of color who ARE qualified but not leftist cranks with a hard-on for destroying America.
So tell me again, why is it I should be celebrating...??
