'1776': America, the Musical

Okay somehow I managed to get this far in life without ever being arrested or knowing about this 1969 musical (it was made into a movie in 1972).

Written by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone, it ran for 1,217 performances. It's hard to believe that forty-three years ago, it was still popular to write an unabashedly patriotic musical that openly celebrated American exceptionalism and painted the founding fathers not just as humans but as the intellectual and moral giants that they were. Because the 1972 film version is tantamount to a filmed version of the play rather than a Hollywood re-interpretation, its original intent and form is easily accessible to today's audience. It deserves a good look and therefore, on this July 4th, let's take some time exploring and enjoying this American musical about America:

...The brilliance of the drama in this show is not "will they do it?" since everyone in the audience knows they will. The drama lies in "how are they gonna pull this off?" The show uses a simple but very theatrical and dramatic device by showing a giant day calendar on the wall above John Hancock's desk. Each new scene shows the calendar page ripped away revealing what day we are witnessing.

Ah Those Dishonest Human Rights Hypocrites

IT'S AS IF ALL THAT HUMAN-RIGHTS CONCERN WAS JUST PARTISAN HACKERY: Liberals ignore Obama's Guantanamos: The same people who excoriated Bush's war on terror are letting Obama do as he pleases.

Let me be clear: All you people who were playing the have-you-no-decency card under Bush, but who aren't screaming just as loud now - which is pretty much all of you people who were playing the have-you-no-decency card under Bush - were and are miserable lying hacks. And I thank Obama for making that perfectly clear, at least.

Thomas Jefferson: Scientist, Inventor, Gadgeteer, and Politician

We were truly blessed that the political leaders of the US at the founding were men who were classically educated, curious and knowledgeable about the world, and had politics as just one of their many interests:

There is a story that on one occasion, while stopping at an inn, Jefferson spent the evening with an educated stranger from the North who was so charmed with his conversation and amazed at his learning that he inquired of the innkeeper who his companion might be.

"When he spoke law, I thought he was a lawyer; when he talked about mechanics, I was sure he was an engineer; when he got into medicine, it was evident he was a physician; when he discussed theology, I was convinced he must be a clergyman; when he talked of literature, I made up my mind that I had run against a college professor who knew everything." (Curtis, 1901)
Monticello, Jefferson's home, was filled with examples of his scientific philosophy. An inventor and gadgeteer of great ingenuity, Jefferson's practical innovations or improvements on others inventions included: the swivel chair, the polygraph, letter press, hemp break. pedometer, mouldboard plow, sulky, folding chair, dumb-waiter, double acting doors, a seven day clock, and a wind vane on the eastern portico of Monticello that enabled him to see which way the wind was blowing on a raining day without getting wet. The entry hall at Monticello was made by Jefferson into a museum to display his many scientific interests. The displays included fossils and specimens from the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The Florida Policeman Who Can Not Be Fired

He has been investigated by police 40 times; has been accused of battery, car theft, boarding a plane with a loaded gun, and carrying drugs.

German Bosque is likely one of the worst repeat offenders in Opa-Locka, Florida - and he's a police officer.

Sgt Bosque, 48, who joined the force in 1993, has been arrested and jailed three times.

Sgt German Bosque has been arrested and jailed three times and has been disciplined, suspended, fined and sent home on full pay more than any other officer operating in the state

He has been accused of beating and stealing from suspects, ignoring direct orders and writing out false police reports, including one in which he hit himself to make an alleged fight appear genuine.

Bosque has been found driving with a suspended licence, with counterfeit money, and in possession of cocaine and crack pipes in his car. Girlfriends allege he has been violent.

Yet Bosque, who lives with his fiancée in North Miami, still manages to keep his job in one of the most notorious police departments in the state.

Well where there's this much smoke, I always figure there's a whole lotta fire that they just didn't have proof for. On the other hand: it's Florida.

Bosque must have friends on high and/or some amazing FOP Jedi powers.

Dr. Rob Schneider Compares Vaccinations to Nuremberg Laws

So California has a proposed bill, AB 2109,  which requires parents to obtain a note from their doctor before they can refuse to vaccinate their children. The purpose is to guarantee that they at least hear the benefits and true risks of the shots. But according to noted medical researcher Rob Schneider this is just like the Nazi laws:

"My wife is 5 months pregnant, and I'm for parent's rights, not government coercion to tell us what we can and can't do with our kids. There is no other mandated procedure. It's illegal. You can't make people do procedures that they don't want. The parents have to be the ones who make the decisions for what's best for our kids. It can't be the government saying that. It's against the Nuremberg Laws."

Oh well Rob's movies are still a guilty pleasure of mine but when it comes to anything other than making me laugh, he's a retard.

Study Says Women Don't Date Unemployed Men

As if losing your job doesn't suck enough, a recent survey conducted by online dating site It's Just Lunch found that 75 percent of women wouldn't even go on a date with an unemployed man. Well, 42 percent of women would consider it. But 33 percent said there was no chance, while the other 25 percent said they would go on a date with a jobless guy.

Well ladies do prefer a guy with a jay-oh-bee but on the other hand I've always had the best success at meeting and dating women while between jobs  or contracts. But I suspect that's mostly because I had more time than usual plus plenty of irons in the fire besides a job.

2 Rob Schneider -- dumber than a rock, and undoubtedly a hard-core liberal on all other issues.

This is what pisses me off about the vaccination issue. The anti-vaccination crowd does not have the facts, yet they insist upon claiming that it is a private matter between them, their children and their physicians.

Fucking idiots.

I've loved 1776 ever since I heard the soundtrack in Junior High; the movie is fantastic!  And the guy who plays the gentleman from South Carolina is John Cullum - I had no IDEA he had such a magnificent singing voice.....

18 FWIW, I haven't seen 1776, mostly because it already put a bad taste in my mouth.  I have a buddy of mine, fairly liberal, who saw it as a kid and his impression of conservative vs. liberal was deeply colored by that movie.  In his mind, because the loyalists in the Continental Congress were referred to as conservatives, modern conservatives are of the same ideological lineage, and if independence were an issue today, libertarians/conservatives would have opposed breaking away from Britain (as well as preserving slavery, denying women's suffrage, etc.).  I pointed out to him that technically, Washington, Adams, and Hamilton were the conservatives then, and they weren't exactly Tories.,but apparently I didn't make an impression, because I saw another such comment from him recently.  I would make comments disparaging intelligence, but I'll just say I'm a little suspect of people forming political opinions based on Broadway musicals.

My side of the argument: The "anti-war" Left will go silent with Obama in office.
***
The left has only one moral principle - that which empowers the left is good, that which weakens it is bad.

Attacking Bush 43 for being mean to jihadis? Weakens a moderate president and conservatism as a whole.

Attacking Obama for summarily executing them? Weakens a hard core leftist and liberalism in general.

I do have to say, if I was that soldier who just got court martialed for summarily executing a jihadi bomb maker in Iraq, I might ask how what I did is different from what Obama is doing..

@CBD,

I'm presuming he means the "Nuremberg Code."  Which only dealt with research.  The ability of the governments to legislate public health issues is well established. (Although the WHO expansion of public health to include fricking everything is another story entirely.)

In either case, I've done some thinking about the vaccination issue and I'm convinced that what we have here an interesting case of overcompensation for the madate of vaccines.  When mixed with the american standard of rugged individualism, the backlash becomes extreme.  The very fact that government mandates vaccines becomes evidence that they're harmful.  Of course if I'm right then the answer is to remove that bullet from the anti-vax moment's chamber, which would likely result in immediately fewer vaccines (but a huge outbreak of formerly contained diseases would end that shit really fast.)

The poli vaccine had actual risks (not 1 in a million risks or completely made up risks) but it didn't need no stinking laws, because polio was bad.

When my oldest sibling picked up chicken pox the pediatrician recommended letting her infect the rest of us and getting it over with. The first vaccine was still over 20 years away from use and it was considered inconvenient but harmless for small children.

I was so young I have no real memory of it.

But in 1991 I'd been working in a Crown books store for just a few months when we heard the guy who left the Assistant Manager position I filled to take over as Manager of the Ventura store died of complications of chicken pox. He'd been to the ER but was told to tough it out and sent home. A few hours later he started coughing up blood and died before his wife could get him help. He was 28.

A few years later and he might have been vaccinated. A doctor would likely have strongly urged it for an adult who had never been exposed as a child.

178 #189 - Darth Randall - To be fair, they're not proposing to give houses to deadbeats. They're thinking of stealing the mortgages of underwater but paying homeowners, paying the investors what the City thinks they're worth (call it a half to a quarter of the loan), then offering the holders of the mortgages much reduced 30-year mortgages and selling the reduced mortgages to investors.

This is in San Bernardino and Fontana; neither city is exactly a mecca for high income housing. If you've lived in the area, you know why.

If any court agrees to this daylight robbery, we're doomed. But it's not quite giving houses to dead-beats.

Daylight robbery? Yes. No argument there. I just don't want you to think that Fontana and San Berdoo are even more criminal than the story makes them out to be.

Okay, we played by the rules, but Joe brought about 50, no exaggeration, staffers with him, and they were handing out Joe stickers to everyone. Assholes. So on Wednesday, we're in another parade with him, this time with no rules like that. He brIngs about 20 staffers and they have the same lame stickers. We brought a red Jeep decked out with flags and our signs, a banner, American flags to hand out, and we gave all the kids on route Steinhof toothbrushes. We busted out the new t-shirts and handed out the new push card warning people that we broke away from a monarchy, and don't vote for another one. Oh, and we had a whole teenage dance school with us. We brought our own fucking parade. You should have heard the little staffers complaining! We owned joe Kennedy on the 4th.

189 The Flt 447 report boils down to pilot error.  Well really?  After listening to the CVR transcripts and one of the dueling co-pilots mutters just before impact asking how he got there, talk about a "Duh!" moment.

Pitot tubes froze up and the computers passed the buck to the pilots.  Thus removing many limits on the flight controls.  But the captain might have been in the rear cabin getting some nooky while the two co-pilots had no idea the stall alarm was actually a different alarm and the computers had gone on strike.  And when the captain got back into the cockpit he did not assert his authority so the co-pilots fought each other without knowing it because of an Airbus design oversight that allowed each pilot to yank on his side controller without any indication the other controller might be being yanked in a different direction.

And thus Flt 447 belly flopped into the Atlantic Ocean killing everyone.

199 I caught the TCM showing of 1776 half way through.  I was boggled and then captivated by the musical.  The argument with John Adams and Ben Franklin over the national bird was funny.  And the PA delegate who refused to vote Yea but walked out to serve in the Continental Army was a moment.  So too when the delegate from New York was informed by a dispatch from G. Washington the British had burned his house, but his wife and children were save - besides the four boys serving in the army.  That is one of the sobering facts how many of those men paid a horrible price, some did hang separately but they stood up against tyranny.

234 This line always rang true:

Take up the White man's burden -- And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better, The hate of those ye guard --
It was written as a warning to the US on the event of the Spanish-American war IIRC, the only time the US flirted with imperialism. We did it badly (we offered them independence when we had "freed" them from the Spanish) which caused T. Roosevelt to remark that America has no stomach for empire.

237 #244 - GGE - I grew up on Kipling (and some day, my fingers will cooperate and astonish us all), as my father was a Marine. It's one of those things, I guess.

When I first met my man (at a John Ringo book signing in Berkeley), he had no idea what to make of me. On our first date, he referenced "Tommy", and I finished the verse. We were pretty much doomed from there on.

He should have known, though, because John recited and line from The Young Recruit, and I finished it.

239 Are you planning to have separate schools for the children of those who refuse to vaccinate? We're talking about communicable diseases here. Posted by: epobirs If all the other children at school have been vaccinated, the unvaccinated children's viruses would not cause them to get ill, so what is the problem? I chose to expose my children to chicken pox and have them get the disease rather than the vaccine, on the advice of my friend who was the head of one of the regional FDA labs. He did the same thing with his children. Of course he had the actual data of the safety & efficacy of the vaccine, rather relying on the statement of the American Medical Association. Many vaccines have produced wonderful results and have vastly improved health around the globe. However, several have more of a potential than other (attenuated, or live, but altered; vs inactivated, or dead vaccine) to producing the disease in a person, rather than immunity. And some, are just vastly over-marketed. For example, yearly influenza vaccines, are produced by projecting a year ahead of time, what strain of influenza will be problematic the following year, after going through what projected mutations globally... and if they happen to get all that correct, it only covers you for 4-6 weeks. So, if you get your vaccine in September, and the influenza doesn't hit your area until February... SOL. There is a great deal of money made in the vaccine industry.

Are you going to have a lottery for which family gets to have the unvaccinated kid? Is that kid going to be barred from sports that might bring him in contact with his counterpart on another school's team?

Chicken pox is not the big worry. The diseases that kill and maim kids are. We've already seen them make little comebacks when measures became lax. Polio for one is making a big comeback in certain parts of the world.

257 You don't have to be anti-vaccination to oppose the government's insistence on its methods. Government mandates one rule, one size fits all. How is that right? We did not follow the gummint's timetable. We worked with our doctor on what we did when to minimize the impact of the vaccinations. Of course, we didn't have them in school, either. Outside government's narrow range of proper purpose, there's just nothing good that government involvement can't make worse. But that Schneider guy sounds like an idiot. I hate it when bedfellows are that strange. So to speak.

I might also add that there are two flu vaccinations -- the shot and the snort. Quite apart from my phobia about being punctured, I've supported the flu snort as long as its been available because it is produced in a different fashion than the shot and in a much shorter timeframe -- making it much more accurate in the flavors of flu it protects against.

326 And despite the advanced state of drone technology, it’s still impossible to know if every strike is a success. No matter. As The New York Times described the administration’s rationale for drone strikes, “people in an area of known terrorist activity, or found with a top Qaeda operative, are probably up to no good.” Can you follow the logic? Putting a known terrorist mastermind in a box with a “harmless insect,” a method approved by a Bush administration assistant attorney general for use in the interrogation of Al Qaeda’s Abu Zubaydah, is “torture.” Killing people who “are probably up to no good” is what Nobel Peace Prize winners do.

372 FWIW, I haven't seen 1776, mostly because it already put a bad taste in my mouth. Posted by: Hoss Fuentes at July 05, 2012 09:54 PM (rO1vw) TCM has been showing the unedited version. Jack Warner, who independently produced the film, showed it to Richard Nixon, and Nixon asked him to take out the song about the "rich conservatives" singing/arguing against independence. Jack Warner, took it out in its original run. Overall, it's a good film. 375 Quick note of trivia, Jefferson was responsible for the Library of Congress.  I believe that some time after he had left office he was in debt, and one of the measures to get himself out of debt was to sell his massive collection of books.  He ended up selling them all to Congress and that's how the LoC was formed.

380 The Amazing Spider-man (2012) A brief review Well wasn't that nice. Okay, you can stop reading now because that about sums up my review. Anyway... I have maintained that a reboot, as they call it, was completely unnecessary. From a box office perspective this movie will perform like the a fourth film since most movie goers aren't going to keep up so much they'll realize it's a "new number one". Finally seeing it, I think my opinion was confirmed. We'll see how the BO looks later. Emma Stone is really really good. She's too damn old for the role of a 17 year old, but she was great. She plays Gwen Stacy. Not exactly my first choice for Gwen Stacy but she did really good. Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, also very good. Dude's 28, really much too old to play a 17 year old and then oversells it at times. But overall, he did good. Tobey Maguire he weren't, but I can't really complain. As a small aside, the humor that the fans were hoping to see return to the character? Yeah, it's just that one bit in the trailer. Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard, Dennis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May...Rhys' character was underdeveloped, Dennis Leary plays Dennis Leary, Sally Field was sleep walking through her insubstantial role and Martin Sheen...okay, guy might be a noxious pinko but he's always good. Thing about the May and Ben parts is I think you're supposed to watch this movie already knowing who these characters are. It's a new part one (kinda sorta*) but these characters are essentially breezed past. We all know Ben dies, but when it happens it feels more like a box being checked. Consequences are not delved into deeply. *I say kinda sorta because the producers, and I think Avi Arad in particular, was saying this wasn't going to be a strict reboot and would be more complimentary and would flesh out the story more. In a way, if you ignore all the changes, sure. But not really. It's a new number one but I think they want audiences to make those mental connections so the weaknesses are minimized. In other words, director Marc Webb depends heavily on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films to have defined the characters for him even though they don't share continuity. (But there is a mid-credit sequence that I could swear has a voice that sounds a lot like Willem Defoe.) As a spectacle, the film is...pretty damn good! There's lots of cool visual ideas that the writers come up to add some excitement. One bit with a flaming SUV hanging off a bridge that was super cool. Another with Spidey building a big web in a sewer junction and using the vibrations from the web lines to detect movement. Cool stuff. Lots of little ideas that you're kind of surprised weren't someone worked into Raimi's films. But there are lots of flaws. The film seems smaller. Characters aren't fleshed out. Some important emotional moments lack weight. The story itself is pretty stock. It's a very good movie. It's just not a a great movie. And it's certainly not going to replace the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies as the gold standard of Marvel films. But overall it's a very entertaining and enjoyable movie. I can't say it bowled me over but I can't complain either. 3/5 stars

It would take me at least 20 minutes to even figure out how to tune to an open C. Outta be a law.

395 Plus it would be a hoot seeing her and Slow Joe going at in a primary debate.
--
Even Palin beat Slow Joe.

To Condi's credit, she could wipe the floor with Hillary, Jarrett and Pelosi in trio. She could face off Raum.

That Condi said "absolutely not" better mean that, or her word's worth no more than another convenience lie. She might truly prefer her role as Sec. of State, or UN Ambassador.

Obviously, Ms. Rice would provide Mitt's deck with the "woman" and "black" cards for obnoxious bets based on identity politics. For the intellectuals, she speaks Russian and wouldn't repeat the Hillary/Barack "reset" faux pas wrong choice of word.

But admit, she would ensure the Bush III 2012 administration. Given that the Republican Leadership and RNC want more Big Government, eschewing truly constitutional governance, trampling (Tea Party) "vigilantes" under federal abuse, white washing themselves with kinder-gentler lip service, the Bush endorsement carries weight, and matters to Romney who supposedly has a choice.

On "absolutely not" -- Christie changing his lyrics illustrates the Republican Leadership meaning of "Just Say No" until you give it up.

397 1776 is quite tolerable as long as I fast-forward through the songs, which are godawful and jarring in context.  PIIINS, JOHN.  Dear God.

398    27  22 The BEST part about 1776 is that Mr Feeney's in it, and he's brilliant. Any 90's kids know what I'm talkin' bout?

Boy Meets World. Of course you would be better off mentioning him as the voice of Kip in Knight Rider.
