— Maetenloch End of the weekend for some, just another day for others, but all are welcome at the ONT party.
Who's Got Power and Who Doesn't?
Find out where the power is off with Blackout Tracker which shows both the duration and number of people affected.
Put together by Eaton, a company that makes products that help utilities manage different parts of the electric grid, this little web app shows you where the electric grid has recently failed, and why. The Blackout Tracker doesn't claim to include all blackouts, but it gives you an idea of the number of blackouts that happen, and the wide range of causes blackouts can have. For instance, in the picture above, you can see that Wichita, Kansas, had a blackout earlier this week that was related to a heatwave-hot weather meant more people turned on their air conditioners in the middle of the day, and, for whatever reason, there wasn't enough electrical supply available to meet that demand.
And one thing that most people don't realize is how delicate our electrical distribution system actually is...well until the lights go off.
First, the grid doesn't have any storage. (At least, none to speak of.) Second, the grid has to operate within a very narrow window of technical specifications. At any given moment, there must be almost exactly as much electricity being produced as there is being consumed. If that balance is thrown off, by even a fraction of a percent, you start heading toward blackouts. There are people working 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, making sure that balance is maintained on a minute-by-minute basis.
And contra recent hysteria we have more to fear from an angry sun taking down the grid than we do from hackers and terrorists.
California Decides to Steer into the Crazy
They're bankrupt and being forced to cut basic services so of course Gov. Brown and the legislature have decided to sink billions the state doesn't have into a high speed rail system that most Californians don't want.
California is going for broke, and the country's most dysfunctional and badly governed state, enmeshed in debt and unable to manage its yearly budget, has voted to borrow billions of dollars it can't afford to begin a train project that it may never be able to finish - and that it may not even need....Californians must now scrape together tens of billions of dollars more - and hope that the federal government, despite the huge fiscal problems descending on Washington, will pump tens of billions more into a rail line that most Americans will never ride.
Large majorities of Californians tell pollsters that they don't want this train; the cash strapped state meanwhile is slashing funding for schools, colleges, parks and other basic services.
Bill Maher Living the AoSHQ Lifestyle
Well he is open-minded and likes hookers of all colors and sexes:
In 2010, Bill Maher said he wished President Barack Obama was less like Brady and more like Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight... In response, Brady said that just because Maher likes black prostitutes, doesn't mean he understands the black experience, adding that he wouldn't appear on Maher's show...
..."Now, Bill Maher would call the cops and he would have his lawyer - I'd get sued and lose my house and it's not worth it for me," he continued. "But the black man part of me would be so satisfied to slap the s*** out of him in front of Cocoa and Ebony and Fox, the three ladies of the night that he has hired . . . and Fancy, who also happened to be named Tyrique at one point."

So a guy find a grenade in the forest and the thoughtful netizens at 4chan offer suggestions on what to do with it.
Seven Insane Ways To Get Drunk Without Drinking
Did you promise to never allow alcohol to pass through your lips? No problemo - there are plenty of other orifices and membranes available:
Not so long ago, there was a European invention called Alcohol Without Liquid, or AWOL (that should be your first red flag). You pour in a shot of your liquor of choice, the machine turns it into a vapor, and you inhale it. Insufflated alcohol goes into your bloodstream much faster than drinking. Also, the amount of food you have eaten doesn't affect its potency because, again, it bypasses your digestive system. It advertised a calorie-free drinking experience and promised no hangovers.
Apparently pro-ana and pro-thin websites do not approve of Kate Upton for promoting eating for pleasure and 'fat-pride':
[Kate Upton] has become the target of pro-anorexia website SkinnyGossip following her participation in a burger commercial. Despite shooting sexy images for Carl's Jr. a few months back, the website has suddenly decided to slam the blonde star now by calling her a "cannibal."
..."Guess who?! Yes, it's the lovely Kate Upton, confidently lumbering up a runway like there's a buffet at the end of it," they said, before adding: "She looks thick, vulgar, almost pornographic - and she is a solid 30lb too heavy for this outfit."

I think they will try. But there is an election coming up, in 4 months ... and most of the clowns really want to keep their jobs.
I foresee most California Ds looking back at November 2010 ... wistfully ... the good old days. I think many are starting to realize that Gov. Moonbeam tied them to the tracks ... and those that spend money on HSR will be railroaded in November 2012.

Maher probably wishes she had "tranny-surprise"; but, no, she's a she. If she were a he I'd think "she'd" be taller. Also there's the shape of the lower jaw, the thinness of the arms, and the narrow waist. And no adam's-apple (although that's in shadow).
The hands are large, but that doesn't mean much. I have small hands and I'm male.

Or maybe just die in a fire. Either one works for me.

Maher believe in anything good?
Maher believes in himself and only himself. A self-centered egotistical little homonculus of a human being. There is nothing profound to be learned from him. If Maher represents any kind of culmination of the human spirit, it is a cramped, dark and malevolent spirit.
He will someday disappear from human society and virtually no one will really care. His fans are largely the same kind of semi-human trolls. They have the appearance of a human being, but lack any warmth, generosity of spirit, charity or ability to have a mature relationship with other people.

Speaking of grenades, that was also on an episode of 1,000 Ways to Die. As the story was told, an Italian man crossed the Mafia, was captured, and then taken somewhere out in the Italian countryside to die his own grave. Before the grave-digging was completed though, he inadvertently dug out a pineapple grenade, which then exploded near the two mafiosos overseeing the digger's execution.
Dunno how true the story is, but it certainly made for captivating TV.

They are still pulling live rounds out of suburban Maryland and NW DC left over from WWI when it was a simpler, more rural area.
The rounds from France and Belgium are mostly from WWI. The volume of shells fired in a relatively concentrated area along the trenches are staggering.
In a single morning the British suffered 50,000 casualties at the Somme, and the carnage went on for years.

When Edward and Mary Weidenbener went to vote in Indiana's primary in May, they didn't realize that state law required them to bring government photo IDs such as a driver's license or passport.
The husband and wife, both approaching 90 years old, had to use a temporary ballot that would be verified later, even though they knew the people working the polling site that day. Unaware that Indiana law obligated them to follow up with the county election board, the Weidenbeners ultimately had their votes rejected — news to them until informed recently by an Associated Press reporter.
I'm not linking their horseshit story but suffice to say it will be news tomorrow. Much wailing and gnashing of gums is a comin' folks.

The rumor is that Barack's "real father" was Frank Marshall Davis, who was also a seminal influence on young Barack in Hawaii.
Frank was a bit a of self - proclaimed Marxist - Communist, and talked the party line; which is what he probably fed the young Barry. Frank was also big into pornography at the time.
If you look at Frank Marshall Davis, Barack Obama Sr., and Barry Hussein Soetoro Obama - frankly Barack looks like Barack Obama Sr., his polygamous Kenya daddy. A DNA study with Barack and his half - brother George would be.......fascinating!
The guy has had a really weird life, which frankly is not all his fault (his mother and grandparents were pretty weird, which doesn't even get into his father's family), but he also has no place being President of the United States. He's not that smart, not qualified, and frankly hates a lot of what is typical and normal for this country - and his antipathy for American life comes out every time he tries to make some kind of speech. What kind of family would let someone like Frank Davis around their kid?
In 50 years people will start writing books about this and they will look back and wonder how this ever happened.

Second, how did they get to the voting place? Did they DRIVE? If one of them dove the car, then either they had a license and were too stupid to show it to the poll officials, or they drove illegally.
Third, to get an ID in Indiana is no big deal. Unlike some states, our BMV is a streamlined, businesslike operation with a maximum 20-minute wait as long as you have birth certificate or some other acceptable ID to get a photo-id.
Fourth, if you cannot afford an ID the state will let you have one for free.
How do we know these people weren't democrats? All we have is their comment that they voted for Romney. How do we know they are telling the truth?

Requiring ID to vote could be a rough and ready, very low standard IQ test. If you're too effing stupid to show up without a driver's license, no vote for you.

Try rebooting into safe mode and run the malware scanner from there. You may also want to look into an offline scanning tool that runs from a bootable CD. A lot of malware is impossible to deal with if Windows is running 'normally' because the malware is running at the lowest level and treating Windows as a virtual session. Thus the malware is invisible to scanners because it lives outside the box Windows is limited to.

Okay. I have had to present my photo id in order to vote since I was a stupid, college, Democrat, which lasted all of one year because my poli sci profs had me working on Dem campaigns. (I got better)
But I knew I needed a fricking ID to vote TWENTY years ago. So how could these people not know they needed ID now???? Are they really that stupid, or are they plants, just trying to cause trouble?
Posted by: moki at July 08, 2012 10:43 PM (dZmFh)
Trying to cause problems. The media wasn't at all interested when I contacted them years ago to report that my dead father had voted in that election. This makes for a great story, a elderly couple having their votes thrown out because they didn't bring any ID to the polls, even though there are signs all around saying that you need an ID to vote, and the locality sends out voter registration cards for free every so often.

I don't doubt that some people didn't get their vote counted, but in each and every case it is their own fault. States run saturation public notices about new voter ID requirements. They allow affidavits, and they tell you right then what you need to do to get it to count.
Can't follow directions? Go hang a chad somewhere else.

57My fondest hope is that Maher has either or will contract some horrible venereal disease and die a slow and lingering death. Perhaps he already is suffering form syphilitic dementia.
I can actually remember watching Politically Correct on Comedy Central in the mid-nineties. Maher often came across as being right of center back then. He even described Hollywood as being mostly nutty liberals.
So syphillis could be an explanation for the horror of a human being he is now.

Mostly, not thinking about it in the evening works; also writing irritated letters to my congresscritters and following every story about the disenfranchisement of the military until it disappears (why do they disappear?!) with close attention does something to make me feel like I'm doing something. But it is outrageous, and it infuriates me.

Nothing short of genetic testing is really going to prove anything. If it were proven that Uncle Frank was really his father, then what? Is it going to change any votes? We know the man had a great deal of influence on Obama as a child. A genetic relation wouldn't change that one way or the other, so those who didn't care about Davis before would have no reason to change.
It would at least mean an end to the tiresome birther tirades.

Let's all cool off for a second. Everybody here is pretty much on the same team.
The problem or intrigue of our President's ancestry, while quite interesting in its own right, is less of a problem than what to do about this guy and getting him unelected in November.
A certain portion of the electorate will be impervious to any real truth about who this guy really is, but some people can still be persuaded to vote against him if we don't all come across as being obsessed about making a point that is almost impossible to prove under the present circumstances.

My mom, who had a baby that same year (1961), says there is no way they could have gotten from one side of the world to the other in the allotted time using the era's travel tech. So what else could he be hiding? (Yes, the new BC is a forgery.)

There is so much weird shit surrounding the life of Barack Obama, that it would be incredibly fascinating to really dig into it.
He is a monumentally weird and puzzling person. I think that even he knows less than he thinks about some of the formative things in his life. I think he has been manipulated and used by others to become someone else's political pawn, and the game has gotten wildly out of control. But that's just my little dark suspicion.
But having said that, bringing up the actual weirdness of Obama to the general public generally gets you tagged as something of a nutty "birther" and you are immediately marginalized (outside of the circle of your own friends and trusted compatriots, such as at AoSHQ). And that doesn't mean that anybody is nuts because they have strong suspicions about who this guy really is, because I have some strong but unprovable suspicions about what is really going on. It just means you get marginalized instantaneously by the Blah! blah! Blah Make Believe Media.
To beat this guy in November, we have to campaign on what he has objectively done wrong as President, and persuade people to vote against him on what a bad set of decisions he has made, and frankly what a poor and unqualified executive he is. Part of the population is just not going to listen to anything negative about Obama, part of the population is already convinced that we need to get rid of him. It's the part that is open to being persuaded that has to be reached.

Genetically, the people of Africa are the most diverse on earth -- they've had the longest to develop, after all. But each group may (or may not) be one of the most homogenous populations....depending on the circumstances of their history. If they were in some transportation nexus (e.g. Israel -- though that's not in Africa), they could be related to half the continent. On the other hand, if they were in a stable area that had periodic ecological crises, they could be nearly 100% interrelated to someone genetically suited to survive such crises. Add in some random European border-setting, and there's no easy way to know about a particular group besides asking someone.

We do, we have a lot of them, in fact we have so many it's already pretty crowded underground. Then to add new ones you have to destroy everything that is built on top of where you want to put it or you have to bore tunnels. Both of which are very expensive.
Burying cable is extremely expensive. Expensive enough to double your electric bill in order to pay for, if that would even do it.

yeah I should get a generator, but the problem is, if I get a generator, I want to do it right, which means permanently installing it and hooking it up to the natural gas line (I imagine), which means it's staying with the house when I do decide to sell the house, which means I have to get my money out of it in terms of increased resale value... is that the case?

Well that's good you didn't have problems. You can't do that here though. You need a seperate conduit for each utility. Power cables usually cause interference with communication cables and besides the utility companies demand their own pipe. You have to have at lease 1' seperation between each utility as well.
The last time I bored underneath a highway for just enough utilities for 250 apartments it cost me $65,000 for 100'

You'd think...if we can run 5000-man floating cities, aka aircraft carriers, off a small nuclear powerplant for 20 years at a stretch, it's certainly possible for land-based power generation.
Smaller is also possible - you could set up a small scale reactor with nowhere near critical mass present, unlike naval reactors, and harness enough heat from natural decay to provide power to a small number of homes or business.

That is what happened here. It wasn't the local lines that went down, it was the lines feeding the substations and the substations themselves. The EPA forced ApCO to close a few coal power plants around here in the last 2 years, so now we have to rely on power being generated from areas further away.

I just helped my son in law install his. It wasn't a big deal. We built a doghouse next to his house to put the generator in and made it big enough to put 4-5 gal gas cans in then hooked it into his electric panel with a seperate panel they make for that sort of thing.
All in it cost about $600 including the generator and a days work.

Ohio Dan
What you did individually for your house is pretty straightforward, but you provided a lot of the labor to dig the trench, etc.
Where I live (a new neighborhood), all the house lines are buried, and there are ground level step-down transformers that were built and sit on pads and also cable and phone pedestals (a transformer sits in the corner of my yard). The power company still claims a right of way along the back of my property line, because there are a bunch of cables buried there. It was all done up front, but it was a little more costly than above ground poles. To do that as a retrofit would be really expensive - digging trenches and the new hardward while keeping the old hardware operational until it was supplemented.
And burying multi kilovolt transmission lines is REALLY expensive. The usually have to have concrete caissons poured to lay those kinds of lines in the ground.

It's more for aesthetics than anything else. It is cheap to do it before roads and other things are built. Plus, the builders are already laying pipe for water and sewer, so another trench for power, cable, and telephone is rather cheap and easy.

I think it depends on the type of disasters you're likely to face (which, thus, makes it a nightmare with the Feds involved). If you're likely to need a generator because of an earthquake, the earthquake is more likely to break your gas line than take your electric wires down. If you'll be hit by a hurricane, the contrary. If you have a flood, neither one would likely work for different reasons (if all your burners and plugs are submerged....), etc.

If you have the scratch for the natural gas/propane one, do it. Those can be installed so that they turn on automatically, and you don't have to worry about running out of fuel or refueling it. That is one thing that happened here was that enough gas stations didn't have power, so the stations that did have power, ran out of gas about 16 hours after the power went out. The problem with the natural gas/lp generators is that they cost a hell of a lot more than a 5-6k gasoline generator.
One thing you may look into is a whole home battery pack. These things charge up while you have power, then when your power goes off, it turns on. The charge should last about 2 days.

It would be very flashy but improbable. Most of the designs being proposed had to be magnetically suspended in vacuum to get the desired performance. Anything going wrong with those elements would be more likely to produce an elliptical spray of tiny flywheel shrapnel.
The articles in place like PopSci used to discuss the need for a pretty hefty little bunker for the flywheel to live it, to have the bit contained if it broke up.

It isn't that bad. I have a crank generator flashlight with a USB port for charging stuff and I've charged up a Blackberry in less than an hour of continuous cranking at low single digit RPM. Just to see what it would be like in an emergency.
I expect an exercycle and some vigorous effort would produce a lot more juice. Not enough to get off the grid but a good emergency means of charging up a battery array. Beats sitting in the dark.

Oh fuck you don't need 8KW. 3 to 5 is plenty. We put a seperate panel in his garage that let's him turn off and on different circuits. Like if you want to watch tv at night you can kill the refer and then turn it back on before you go to bed. 8KW would run everything in a 2,500 sq. ft. all electric house. You don't need that.
An 8 KW gasoline generator is about the same price.

chemjeff:
If you connect the generator to your natural gas supply the same way a NG stove is connected, and then connect it on your side of your KwH meter with a large plug to a utility-approved disconnect box (so the utility can disconnect you for work on their side, and so you don;t power the rest of the area), then your investment is mostly portable.
The (eco-leftist) magazine "Home Power" periodically discuses this sort of thing. They have a lead article on an off-grid solar house each issue. Politics do not show much, but they are Left ...

Do your design with the generator outside. Put it in a "jail cell" ... plenty of steel bars, concrete, and very good ventilation (12"+ clearance all around, add som more for sound suppression panels). This is likely to be a better choice, and meet code with less cost and work.

Put it in a doghouse next to your house. We built SIL's with a shed roof that lifts off so you can start the generator and maintain it. We put two hasps on the roof to put padlocks on. You can also take it with you when you move but I imagine your new owners would want to pay you what you had in it to leave it.

You want to put it next to your electric panel which I assume is in your garage. Then you just drill a hole through the wall and run a cable from your generator to the garage. They make a cable that plugs into both for about $20 for a 8' cable.

Seems that her son-in-law (or equivalently distant relation) actually owned a registered mining claim up along some Sierra stream, and they'd go up and pan for gold every once in a while, but were annoyed when they sometimes found that people had been mucking around in their stream. So, one day, the s-i-l was up there and this guy parks (in this remote area) and comes strolling along.
So the sil decides to do some preemptive strike action and says, "Howdy-do! Hope you're enjoying the birds and the fresh air! As for my lot -- please pardon me if I'm a bit cranky. I've got a registered claim to be mining this parcel, and it looks like someone's been poaching my claim. Under California law, if I catch 'im, I'm entitled to shoot 'im on the spot -- and I'm ready, willing, and eager to do so. But please enjoy the trees and butterflies."
Now, I have no idea whether such a law remains on the books.....California in the 1800's was a pretty straightforward place, and such a law would not have been unusual for the times..........and there could certainly be holdovers in seldom-visited corners of the law like mining claims. But it was absolutely a stroke of genius to inform the stranger of this "fact", 'cause he blanched, stumbled around for a while looking for invisible birds, then hiked back out to his truck and drove away.
But the upshot is -- nobody seriously relies on Sacramento to fix or maintain anything. Even the most graspy of the entitled doesn't have faith that Sacramento has eliminated "instant execution" penalties from mining law.

Along with the cracked garbage disposal, the lack of insulation around the window, and the not ready laundry room, we have a mouse in the kitchen.
Can not find said mouse after he/she/it went under the gas stove.
Proud owner of newly acquired mouse traps ... sans peanut butter.
Posted by: A cynical but rarely angry Adriane at July 09, 2012 03:08 AM (qmMAj)
Having discussed this with people who trap vermin for a living, the trick is to interfere with the impulse to take something away to nosh on later. So you want something whose scent says "nosh" firmly wedded to the trap's trigger. A 1"x1" square of terrycloth is perfect, snagged on the trigger and smeared with the bait. Peanut butter works fine.

It's just that I don't have any PB. So I mashed a piece of semi-soft cheese in the 'bait box'.
I remember reading that mice as a rule, don't like cheese; but that was all I had at the moment.
Posted by: A cynical but rarely angry Adriane at July 09, 2012 04:30 AM (qmMAj)
Again, from those who trap vermin for a living, the terrycloth is the key factor. Can't get the bait off the terrycloth; can't get the terrycloth off the trigger -- SNAP!
