Fat Is Officially Incurable (According to Science)
Yep that's the bad news:
Here's a much larger analysis of every long-term weight loss study they could find. They all find the exact same thing: You can lose and keep off some minor amount, 10 or 15 pounds, for the rest of your life -- it's hard, but it can be done. Rarer cases may keep off a little more. But no one goes from actually fat to actually thin and stays thin permanently.
Well except for a few lucky freaks who do maintain major weight loss. And how rare are these people? Pretty freakin' rare:
Well, this person did the math, and as far as they could tell, two out of 1,000 Weight Watchers customers actually maintain large weight losses permanently. Two out of a thousand. That means if you are fat, you are 25 times more likely to survive getting shot in the head than to stop being fat.
But, but, but what if I cut out processed and junk food, avoid corn syrup, work out, stop watching TV or drinking alcohol, stay active, and basically live like the Amish do - I'll be thin then right??
Nope - it turns out that even the Amish who do all the 'right' things lifestyle-wise still get fat:
Among the Old Order Amish, the adult women had an average BMI of 27.8 - about 162 pounds for a 5'-4" woman - and the men had average BMIs of 25.7 - about 180 pounds for a 5'-10" man. "The prevalence of overweight and obesity in [Amish] men was 54.0% and 10.1%, respectively, and in [Amish] women was 63.7% and 30.5%, respectively." They are not thinner than the rest of country, despite untold amounts of physical activity and healthy living.
And it turns out that all that physical labor that they're famous for has a relatively small effect on weight:
for a man of average Old Order Amish height and BMI, working out 16 hours versus 12 hours a day would equate to about a 15 pounds difference; and for a woman, working out 14 versus 10 hours a day would correlate with a whole 12 pounds difference in body weight. These nominal weight differences would still not transform someone naturally obese into someone thin.
Okay, but they get sick just like regular American slobs too right? Nope:
The Amish don't diet and the ideal of slimness is foreign to them, according to the German researcher. Stoutness and robustness is considered an asset for hard field work among the men and childbearing for the women. Yet, the Amish have lower rates of heart disease and rates of type 2 diabetes that are only about half that of the general American population.
So they're heavy but not necessarily unhealthy.
The goal here is not to depress you but to point out that losing and keeping off a lot of weight permanently is really, really hard. And since genes and biology are involved, there's likely no magic diet or behavior bullet that will ever change this. So if you're kinda big, odds are that you'll never become a long-term thin person - but you can be a thinner and healthier version of you.
How ObamaTaxCare Will Really Work
Even after passing it no one really knows exactly what's in it. But here Veronique de Rugy breaks down some of the nitty-gritty to give you an idea of how it'll work.
- The penalty/tax will be phased in from 2014 to 2016.
- The minimum penalty/tax in 2016 will be $695 per person and up to 3-times that per family.
- After 2016, these amounts will increase at the rate of inflation.
- The minimum penalty/tax per person will start at $95 in 2014 (and then increase through 2016)
- No family will ever pay more than 3X the per-person penalty, regardless of how many people are in the family.
- The $695 per-person penalty is only for those who make between $9,500 and ~$37,000 per year. If you make less than ~$9.500, you're exempt. If you make more than ~$37,000, your penalty is calculated by the following formula.
- The penalty is 2.5% of any household income above the level at which you are required to file a tax return. That level is currently $9,500 per person and $19,000 per couple. The penalty on any income above that is 2.5%. So the penalty can get expensive quickly if you make a lot of money.
- However, the penalty can never be more than the cost of a "Bronze" heath insurance plan purchased through one of the state "exchanges" that will be created as part of Obamacare. The CBO estimates that these policies will cost $4,500-$5,000 per person and $12,000-$12,500 per family in 2016, with the costs rising thereafter.
And here's how much will be coming out of your pocket:
- Less than $9,500 income = $0
- $9,500 - $37,000 income = $695
- $50,000 income = $1,000
- $75,000 income = $1,600
- $100,000 income = $2,250
- $125,000 income = $2,900
- $150,000 income = $3,500
- $175,000 income = $4,100
- $200,000 income = $4,700
- Over $200,000 = The cost of a "bronze" health-insurance plan.
And if this seems rather regressive to you, you're correct:
Even a quick look makes it clear that 75% of the taxes to be paid will be paid by those making $120,000 or less. That, my friends is a middle class tax increase of epic proportions- something this president promised wouldn't happen on his watch.

The Return of Debtor's Prisons
Debtor's Prisons are supposed to be illegal in the US but with many cities and towns desperate for revenue they're making a de facto comeback.
Even minor offenses now come with many fees and charges tacked on whether or not you're convicted with failure (or inability) to pay leading to escalating fees (with high interest rates), penalties and even jail time. And of course you'll be charged for your jail time too.
Three years ago, Gina Ray, who is now 31 and unemployed, was fined $179 for speeding. She failed to show up at court (she says the ticket bore the wrong date), so her license was revoked. When she was next pulled over, she was, of course, driving without a license. By then her fees added up to more than $1,500. Unable to pay, she was handed over to a private probation company and jailed - charged an additional fee for each day behind bars.
For that driving offense, Ms. Ray has been locked up three times for a total of 40 days and owes $3,170, much of it to the probation company.
The KA-BAR knife became famous during WWII but Union Cutlery was making knives long before then.
Of course you do:
A business named Drive-a-Tank offers drivers the chance to pilot surplus military tanks and other armored vehicles around an old limestone quarry and smash junk cars like an action movie hero. The ride is loud, grinding, hot and dirty - ideal for satisfying one's inner Rambo.
...A basic package that includes driving a tank and shooting a machine gun costs $399, with more expensive options for driving several models and shooting other weapons such as assault rifles. Drivers who want to smash a car pay an additional $549; for about $3,500, a customer can drive a tank through a trailer house.
And for those playing double-post bingo this also appeared on the sidebar so it counts.
One of the Mothra Twins Has Died
Sad news - Emi Ito, one of the two fairies that sang lullabies to summon Mothra, has died at the age of 71.
The identical twins were perhaps the most memorable human characters in the Godzilla series, and Emi and Yumi Ito were the two actresses who played the roles. They recorded hit albums in Japan going by the name "The Peanuts" and were one of that country's first pop sensations, one of the few that became well known internationally.
...In 1961, they achieved international immortality when they appeared in the movie MOTHRA as fairies, or pixies, called "shobijin" (small beauties) who had telepathic communication with Mothra, giving The Peanuts a somewhat supernatural aura.
Even now there's something still mesmerizing about the Mothra song.

However, obesity was extremely rare prior to the modern age.
So the issue is not genes and it is not biology - we didn't evolve to get fat in the last 100 years or so.
You are left with four possible reasons for modern obesity;
1) It is a disease of some sort
2) Calories goes up...and so does weight
3) Calories going out (in exercise) goes down and weight goes up
4) The type of diet we eat has changed and we metabolize it differently

Never before in human history has food been as plentiful or varied as it is today, at least in 1st world countries. Combined with the lifestyle shift from agrarian to more urban / suburban modes and modern work involving hours of stasis, it should come as no surprise that we're fatter. I can live with it. Fat and sad beats starved and dead every single time, in my estimation. My apologies to any of the horde fighting weight issues - I haven't done it, so I can't understand, but the above is my conclusion.

3) Calories going out (in exercise) goes down and weight goes up
4) The type of diet we eat has changed and we metabolize it differently
Unlikely to be a disease - or virus that has just appeared.
We are a richer country now than 100 years ago, and the diet is a lot richer. More sweets, more meat. So I would guess that the caloric per capita intake has gone up.
We are a much more sedentary society now than 100 years ago. We were really just starting to mechanize. There was a tremendous amount of horse-drawn work done 100 years ago - and working horses is hard work. More people lived on farms - more hard work. And factory work was also much more physical. And life expectancies were shorter too.
Fer shure, diet has changed. I'm dubious is has that much to do with sugar versus "high fructose corn sugar" just by itself. But many people are compulsive, and eating can be a compulsive behavior to mitigate stress. I think a lot of the morbidly obese people you see have a compulsive eating disorder that makes them eat more than they should because they do it to mitigate stress. And it's not just eating, it's what they eat - pleasure foods, too much sugar, etc.
Smoking used to be one kind of compulsive behavior, and it suppressed the urge to eat, so a lot of smokers (compulsives) were thin, rather than fat. Now a lot of compulsive people are fat, because they eat too much.

BMI is bullshit (I'm assuming that's where the 170 number came from). I'm 6' 185, and doc says I should be 175 or less. In my opinion, I should be 185, but ought to redistribute mass from the beerguttal region to other more needy areas in the form of muscle, and maintain or gain weight. I used to carry 205 when I was in good shape, so his recommendation carries zero influence with me.

This is the key: expectations. They do hard physical labor, but eat accordingly. If they dialed back the chow, boom. They'd lose weight. Thermodynamics, bitchez. They don't, because they don't see the need. Quite the contrary: they think they need to fuel up, and they're probably right.

When the BMI bullshit started taking off one of the fitness magazines pointed out that, according to the BMI scale, many of Hollywood's most fit leading men, including Tom Cruise, were considered obese. Only measuring weight versus height and age...even considering bone mass... does not tell the entire story. When I was in my 30s I wore a size 4-5 but weighed about 20 lbs more than my gal-friends who wore the same size. Muscle weighs more than fat.

Honestly I agree it is a combination of 2-4 also - more food, less exercise, and too many carbs.
And not having to face hunger as a serious issue in our society is a positive thing. But I am concerned by the whole industry that seems to have cropped up to validate obesity.
I do not at all deny losing weight can be hard, that Hollywood sells ridiculous images of what people can realistically look like, and that food tastes damn good. But in the final analysis if you are overweight (yes baring some rare medical issues, at least for the young) you are making a choice to stay the way you are.
It is your choice to make, well until Obamacare comes into it, but don't pass it off as someone else's doing.

They account for a lot of the scary skinny people in third world places where food is in decent supply.
Anecdotal: Back in my computer store days, there was a customer who didn't come in for almost three months. Then one day he shows up and of us were stunned. He was pretty trim before but now was into serious concentration camp territory. Except for still having the same hair and beard.
Said it was a parasitic infestation that took a course of anti-biotics to kill off that were almost as bad as the parasites. A year later he looked a bit better but was still noticeably underweight. He got really fed up with people assuming he had AIDS. Especially when he was with his wife and kids.

2) Calories goes up...and so does weight
3) Calories going out (in exercise) goes down and weight goes up

#1 is bullshit. 'Nuff said.
#2 and 3 are on target.
#4 is half on target, half off. We eat a much richer diet, but metabolize it in exactly the same way people 500 years ago would have metabolized it, had they had it. Evolution doesn't kick in on the decade timescale.

Your weight is a matter of your willful intent. I weighed 265 pounds when I graduated high school. Lost it down to 175 pounds in three months. I am 59 years old and I weigh 180-185 pounds. Like I said, a matter of intent.

Fond memories I do have of living in a big city. Out here in the sticks speeding is not something a lot of people do. Today on the way home from work I found myself behind a guy going 40 on the state highway where the limit is 70. This is not uncommon. My only wish is that someone puts me out of my misery when I get too old and blind to drive half the speed limit.

Taubes would go with #4. He's described it as (paraphrasing) "we are in the midst of a multidecade experiment of eating predigested food."
The idea is that food that is highly refined and super-easy to digest makes your blood glucose spike, which causes insulin release. Fat cells respond to that by going into storage mode; they grab glucose out of the bloodstream and package it up, leading to more stored fat, and yet lethargy because your blood sugar was depleted by the process so you're tired and hungry. Of course you could fix that by eating again...

Then I hit a plateau and kicked in some daily exercise and continued with the water replacing soda and beer, and did the healthy shake for breakfast deal. Eventually got down to 204 at my lowest point, now back to about 220. Time to get back on that horse, goal is 195.
It took a lot of commitment to stick with it, but once I got started I weighed in on the scales every day and could see that I was losing about one pound per day. That was motivation enough to keep with it. Best wishes to those who are trying, it's difficult but YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Five minutes ago, I was reading "Eat. Stop. Eat." which outlines the health benefits of intermittent fasting. I was interested in this because I have done fairly long fasts in the past and have actually enjoyed them.
You never hear about fasting, even though it's a part of most religions, because there is no profit in promoting fasting as a way to lose weight (aside from the author of this book...) Every diet, nutritional supplement, etc that is sold for weight loss, financially benefits some company.
The beauty of intermittent fasting is that you can do a 24 hour fast twice a week and still eat everyday. You end your supper at 6:00 PM one day and then eat again at 6:00 PM the next day. If 24 hours is too much for you, there are still benefits to a 16 hour fast for men and 14 hours for women.
You can still eat your favourite foods because you're still restricting your overall calories throughout the week. And since you're not obsessing over meal preparations as people on regular diets do, you can usually get more done on fasting days.

I live fairly near a large Amish settlement (Holmes County, Ohio) and have interacted a lot with the Amish over the years.
1) They eat a lot, and eat a lot of rich foods. Meats, cheeses, pastry (pies), potatoes.
2) They are generally not thin. They all carry a good amount of muscle mass, so they are not fat. They live as most Americans used to live about 150 years ago
3) They also come from a rather limited gene pool. I would bet their genetic predisposition to weight gain is constant across most of their group. And overall as a community, their diet is very consistent.
4) So what I would guess is they have intuitively adjusted their diet to meet their physical needs and their gene types, and they have a stable society, where sloth and self-indulgence and compulsive behavior is somewhat frowned upon, and hard work is a virtue.

Here's a simple prescription for losing weight: eat less, exercise more - and harder.
Want to lose a pound a day? Easy. Nothing to it. Spend 40 minutes a day in the outfield, sprinting hard after fly balls. I went from 180 to 175 lbs. in a week (at 6'1", so I didn't have a lot of blubber to lose), and I wasn't even trying to lose weight (furthest thing from my mind), just needed to get in some practice before a tournament.
I was amazed.

They certainly both exist, though work in radically different ways.
Hollywood, and even more so the fashion industry, sell ridiculous images of beauty - if you are a 6 ft 120 lb woman you are not an ideal, you aren't even attractive. This encourages some women to descend into anorexia and the like.
On the other hand, people who argue that being 5 ft 240 lbs is just your genetics, and you go girl!, and not a result of choices you made (again baring unusual medical conditions) are doing just as great a disservice.

Wow, so touchy. I guess your Prius hypermiling is more important to you then the people behind you. :-p
You know, people should treat other people in a rational and fair manner.
If you can get over safely to let someone pass, it is the right thing to do. And your Obama '12 bumpersticker doesn't make it ok that you don't.
If the person ahead of you is doing 65 in a 55 and can't get over you drive behind said person at a safe distance and wait.
This is how driving is supposed to be done.
And again, how do you justify a "law" that the majority breaks daily? Either the police should be hauling the 95% of the productive class to prison immediately to break our nefarious ways, as we are endangering everyone else apparently, or the laws should actually be used to encourage safe driving, not revenue enhancement.

The key for me is to deprive yourself until you stop feeling hungry and then eat small servings. Exercise helps but isn't mandatory, ditto on doing away with carbs. A typical diet meal for me is to prepare half a hot dog. Cut that into thirds and give two of them to the dog.

Amen. My first job after college was working in an OR, so all the latest dietary "science" was a constant topic among the docs and nurses. We all took the test one day, and it did identify the fat people as fat (a fairly easy accomplishment, you could have just asked them and gotten the same result), but I found out I was obese, which came as a shock. Back in those days, I was a trim 205, and significantly more fit than today, but according to BMI, I'm better off today, despite poor CV conditioning and higher body fat level.

Even when I was managing my diet daily, I'd give myself one or two days a week to get hammered and eat a burger or steak and go off the managed diet. Then it was easy to go back to the maddog theory of starving yourself to get back on track! That worked for me too, though doctors and Jenny Craig probably frown on it.

for my situation the order of importance is carbs ( sugary drinks, breads, beer
then calories, and making sure to exercise every day, I try to walk at least 4 miles a day. 57 yrs old, lost 30-some pounds in about 4 months, then backslid for a couple weeks. Count the calories and expend the exercise to account for them. Ride a bike ( I ride for 30 minutes every other day in a cemetary with some hilly roads ) walk to the store a mile away to pick up one thing. Walk to get a v8 juice for lunch.
The backsliding comes about because of the hunger :-)

1) Greater variety of diet choices means more stuff that our bodies aren't adapted to eat.
2) Increasingly sedentary lifestyles mean that people are less physically developed. Walking or riding horses everywhere, working a farm, and the general day labors that most people went through would have put muscle onto people which helped keep people thin, or at the very least gave them enough muscle underneath the fat that it didn't matter.
3) Parasites have gone away. Diseases that killed off much of the unhealthy population are no longer a threat.
4) Perception changes. What we consider overweight nowadays would have been considered normal in past times, and even a sign of being healthy (since you weren't starving). As a result, we perceive more fat people today.

Back in the 60's, doctors used to have huge jars full of diet pills they'd hand out...they were basically Bennies and Dexies. They worked too.

I think it is obvious that your problem is indeed your problem.
Liberals think of other people, when they are of immediate use to them, and say "fuck them".
Conservatives think of others as independent people who should be treated with a certain level of decorum.
I would no more intentionally block someone in a car on the road then I would on foot on the sidewalk. Why would you?

You can, in fact, lose weight permanently. The only solution is to reduce caloric intake.
I exercised all my life, and I always had a weight problem. After I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease on Octboer 7, 2011, I had to cut out all junk food, all restaurant food, and all food with a label, due to the sodium and MSG. I also had to go on a low-fat diet.
All I eat now is fresh vegetables, beef, chicken from a Chinese butcher shop (all American-made chicken and turkey have MSG in them), fresh fruit, and two slices of whole-wheat bread a day. My daily caloric intake is about 1200-1500. I have to do 20 minutes of aerobics a day, to increase my circulation, which reduces the symptoms.
At age 50, I've lost 60 pounds. For the first time since I was 19 years old, I'm down to 180, and I'm six feet tall. I have abs again. Since Meniere's is permanent, I'll never be able to go back to how I ate before, so my weight loss is permanent.
You can lose weight, but you simply can't ever have cheeseburgers, pizza, fries, chips, Chinese cuisine, Mexican cuisine, Thai cuisine--all that good shit.
I had to choose between food I loved and rotational vertigo that made me projectile vomit.
Not a hard choice. I don't even miss the stuff I used to eat.

It was about a buck forty up there by 1:00pm. Sweat wasn't dripping off, it was running off in rivulets.

Two weeks I replaced a fence, and spent several days digging post holes in rock hard ground. It was exhausting. My wife was concerned that I wasn't eating enough to sustain that level of effort, and urged me to eat more to keep from losing too much weight.

I was chubby until I hit puberty, then I was skinny for a couple of years. By age 31 I was almost obese. Lost 90 pounds in 3 years and people either didn't recognize me(that was cool) or thought I was on meth or dying. Too skinny.
Gained 40 of it back while still keeping in top physical condition. Here are a few words of wisdom from a formerly fatass--but current moron:
1) Food intake is way more important than exercise for weight control.
2)Buy a calorie book. Cook and weigh your food portions. This seems like a hassle at first- but it will save you time and LOTS of money while you shed pounds.
3) Find out how many calories your body needs in sedatary mode and eat that amount.
4) Don't buy any equipment you don't need.
5) HFCS is pure EVIL.
6) Don't deny yourself the goodstuff, i,e don't buy fake cookies or other crap like that. It's a waste of time.
7) Eat whole grain and unprocessed foods.
Carbs are way worse than fats.
9) If you eat food you hate and do excersies that bore you , you will most likely fail.
10) Cardio programs are always going to be uncomfortable at first. Learn to Embrace the Suck!
11) The BMI index is worthless( it has my ideal weight at 173 pounds, I would look like a Qtip.)
12) 99% of diet fads are garbage. The people that pimp this sh!t should be beaten on sight.
Eating right and exercising WILL make you feel great. I never worry about gaining a few pounds now because they are so easy to lose once you learn the basics.

>>True, because your body starts to tap into the aerobic energy pathway after the first due to depletion of the anerobic pathway.Gotta be hard on the knees tho. <<
Not really. Knee problems tend to result from poor conditioning, I suspect. I blew out a knee in high school (sports are good for you!), but found that doing high rep/light weight squats really helps a lot. That, and running up and down a six story series of outdoor steps nearby has worked wonders. The blown out knee feels better known than it did 30 years ago.
The key is good running form: running on the balls of the feet, not slamming the feet into the ground (no slapping). If you can't run up behind someone without them hearing you, you need to work on your running form.

Ever taken a look at family pictures from just the last generation? The "fatsos" of their day seem on the slim side of average by modern standards. Its most noticable when comparing teens and children of yesterday with the upsized youth of today. We've got at pets, for crying out loud.
All this mass isn't being generated out of thin air. Nutrients input has increased while activity output has dropped, its just a unintended consequence of prosperity. Blaming food enemies is kind of silly.

After losing about the same amount of weight at nearly the same time as he, I committed to some strenuous sports which provide the competitive drive that dodges any tedium of regular exercise.
There have been minor fluctuations in weight over the years (10 - 15 lbs.) because I sometimes forgot to reduce caloric intake immediately following any injuries or off-seasons. But long weekends of playing have dropped 10 lbs. of sweat in those instances.

I know cycling is the go-to cardio activity of choice for aging guys these days, but IMO its got nothing on swimming. Its easy on the joints, offers resistance for muscle development and is second only to full on track work for cardio load. People can not believe just how beastly someone can get just from swimming alone, much less combining it with weight training. Besides, since its draining as hell, you don't have to live in mortal fear of dinner rolls, corn flakes, etc.

The local city government here got slapped by a federal court several years back for locking people up unable to pay fines. They behaved for a while, but they did not give up. They just came up with a different justification -- contempt of court. You see, they weren't locking you up for failure to pay but for ignoring a court order. This is the same legal logic they use in locking up 'deadbeat dads' (and no, I am not defending deadbeat dads in general but the system is rigged against fathers as a separate rant).
This new wrinkle of charging you for your confinement closes the loop and practically guarantees that many can never escape. Remember the old oaters where the judge would say "Ten dollars or 10 days"? Yeah, but those were the old and busted days or something. In the new hotness, there is no way out. Even the local courts have recognized, once again, that this is a problem. In some jurisdictions, they are allowing people to work off fines through community service at a rate of $5 per hour or so. Hey, what are minimum wage laws, but it least it's a possible path out.
In summary, I'm with the ACLU on this issue. Ouch.

I wish I knew exactly how to make it, but my Dad used to cook a tuna casserole using the following:
One can of tunafish
One small jar of pimentos
One can of cream of mushroom soup
Crushed potato chips
He'd mix those ingrediants in a casserole dish and then put more crushed potato chips on top. I'm not sure how long or at what temperature to cook it.
May have been my favorite food in life.

Yep. Raised in Middleburg when there were so few people we only had to dial the last four phone numbers to reach someone in town.
Yes. Hoe cakes! Or, as we called it, cornbread. Proper cornbread is cooked atop the stove, in a cast iron pan, and is as dense as wet cement.

Both locations are now occupied by fufu restaurants.

My first sighting was in Calcutta. Gigantic!!!
Having just an hour before seen some poor guy lying by the side of the road with what looked to be walnuts hanging all over his body (I think it was a type of Elephant Man disease), I was totally freaked.
But don't forget that "June Bug" beetles here can be pretty big. Still, they don't look like roaches, and some are very colorful bright blue and green. And being beetles they are utterly harmless.
Just another of God's creatures --- only someone once said God must have loved beetles, because He made so many of them. 600,000 species and counting.

The solution offered in return, but that fell on deaf ears, was that those people shouldn't work in smokey places if they don't like smoke, dammit.

I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told Bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

Hi, Night Owls! -
Here's something to burn your bacon, and not in a good way. I caught the first episode of a new show a few hours ago. I forget the name, but it has that girl in it who was the girlfriend on the show Psych, for about a season. This show seems to want to cash in on something that has similarities to Psych, but (unlike Psych) has some messaging issues.
The show is about a professor with special insights (this time into how the mind works), and the big part of his character is that he's mentally ill - that he literally has delusions, where he sees people who aren't there, and has conversations with them (and this proves to be helpful). The main bad message is that he lectures at some point about how sometimes mentally ill people (obviously like himself) are really just better off staying their naturally crazy self. What can one say, but ... OMG!!!
But the really annoying spot was where they used a mental patient as a "human lie detector" - a person with the uncanny ability to detect minute variations in speaking patterns that expose the lie, and then the person (due to some made-up malady) would giggle as they witness the lie. OK, that's just lame, so far, but where they crossed the line is that they show the guy just happening to watch a clip of "W" as he speaks his famous line about yellowcake - which is supposed to demostrate this guy's ability to detect lies as his giggles after W's line. Again, OMG. These idiots probably don't even realize that you have to be living in the liberal cacoon to accept that as a quintessential lie. (As a pretense to balance, they also showed him giggling at some clip of Clinton later, but I'm not sure that one was even audible.)
You know, when my liberal buddy made that accusation way back when, I looked into it with an open mind (politicians lie!) and quickly learned that the whole sentence was demonstrably true. Anything that has come out since then (notably during the Plame bit) has only confirmed it. What a bunch of liberal a-holes!

Yeah, the term "liberal a-hole" has a certain redundancy to it, and I noticed that, but it seemed to help to emphasize it.
The thing that really got me about it is that this there FIRST show - where they're trying to win people over to hopefully get a good start on a long series run. To throw stuff in on Day One that could piss people off is just stupid. So - like I said - I think they just don't even realize that they're even saying something controvertial.
On the whole, the show was generally well-done, and entertaining. But the part about it being OK to be crazy (and there were other places where they defended other crazy people in the show and "just because they're crazy, it doesn't mean they're wrong) is too much, and the anti-Bush swipe was outrageous.
My wife's bipolar cousin is currently in jail for getting drunk and beating his wife in front of the kids, in the wake of years worth of spouting crazy nonsense, so I'm not in the mood to hear about how unfair it is to "stigmatize" the mentally ill. Nobody would even bail the guy out, because they all knew he would do something crazy, and their bail money would be forfeit. One of the kids wakes up creaming at night because she's afraid daddy will break out of jail and try to kill her.

"NPN or PNP?"
You're killin' me guys; I studied EE, and my kid is in college studying the same. I'm aggravated with myself at not know when one is used vs. the other, but I digress...
You know Psych has their stupid Green thing, but they do it right, keeping it very low-key. The worst they ever did was have Carlton sneer about Global Warming, while the "correcting" him that it "is real". Carlton is like the American Eagle on the Muppets, or Jon Stewart's alter ego - caracatures that make fun of the law-abiding and patriotic. Ironically, the whole theme of the series makes a complete joke of government bureaucrats.
Another case I remember was a little different. Somewhere in one of the X-Files movies, Mulder and Scully pause, look at a picture of "W" on the wall, and the X-Files theme is played. There is no connection to the theme of the movie, whatsoever, and I guess you have to be a SEVERELY whacked-out liberal to even GET whatever the joke supposedly is. It just doesn't make sense to alienate a part of your audience for no reason.

Yes, it occurred to me also that they were actually being somewhat cruel towards the mentally ill in doing this show. (Naturally, these are the SAME folks who are always claiming to be so caring and compasionate toward their fellow man that they're willing to take other people's money by force to apply to charity).
To make it MORE outrageous, they literally advertised something on their web site that give a futher in-depth discussion of one of the maladies that was part of the current episode. So they're putting lipstick on that pig, calling it "education" - so it's OK!
But to elaborate, the hallucinations the guys sees are protrayed as manifestations of his ingenious subconscious mind, who appear like ghosts in other shows to give him hints and clues to send him on the right path to solving the crime. You could say it's less offensive what it's made-up crap, like ghosts (although I find that stuff to be pretty stupid, myself). It wouldn't be so bad, except for the lengthy lecture on how the meds are "a miracle" for many people, but for a few they're just keeping people from being their special selves (he explains that he can't think straight on his meds.) Wow.

Your comments apply in general - and are especially evident with the unbridaled narcissism and arrogance of our current president, but the TV business is extremely competitive, and all about ratings. You show's gonna get cancelled if you turn away potential audience members.
I think the best theory is that nobody in their little world ever questions them when they spew this crap. It is normal, accepted discourse. My liberal buddy thinks of himself as "just normal", and gave us this line of BS (that he probably beloeved himself) that he was all about fiscal solvency. Naturally, now that Obama is the king of deficits, he's an Obama supporter anyway, last I heard. I've really lost patience with the guy. He even came up a reason for supposedly registering as a Republican that was so bizarre and nonsensical, that I can't remember. It disturbs me, because he was among the few mathematically competent people there, so you would think there would be some sort of intellectual rigor to the argument - even if based on bad axioms - not chaotic nonsense.
Well, I better sign off, myself. 'Night all!

IF I work out every day, become muscle bound, look like, say, Barry Sanders (3% body fat), I'd be considered "obese" by the BMI.
So when people do physical labor, they might lose fat percentages, but they'll pick up muscle mass, and our government will consider them "fat" -- and instruct them to lose weight.

They would agree with the premise of this post. Compulsive overeaters can't stop without extra help, just like alcoholics were considered hopeless cases before AA (in fact, with a 100% recidivism rate, alcoholics were not even allowed into hospitals back in the day).
Google the phrase "Is OA for you?" and you'll find the short quiz with traits of compulsive overeaters (IOW, the hardcore).
