Evening morons. I'm at work so y'all enjoy your Friday night for me.
Have GPS Devices Taken The Fun Out Of Navigation? Man you gotta know the basics before you rely on the gee whiz electronic gizmos. It's a bit of work to do it old school but it keeps your brain active and it can be a check to see if the electronic gear you are using is running correctly. We truly are screwed as a country if the power goes out and people don't have their apps to do basic stuff for them anymore. WWII War Paint

How WWII Bomber Jacket Art Emboldened Our Boys. Interesting history on bomber jackets. Much of what was used then would not be done today with the PC police on the prowl.

From Pearl Harbor To Nagasaki
You know, I did this once in that old PC Game Aces Of The Pacific. Roosevelt, UT Pilot Saw The Beginning And The End Of The War In The Pacific. Impressive. He flew 220 combat missions in 122 different kinds of aircraft.
Ghost Detector

Attention all you fappin' morons, which is pretty much all of you. Are you still worried about ghosts watching you while you do the five finger shuffle? Well, worry no more. There's an app and attachment for that. Say hi to Mr. Ghost, The iPhone Electro Magnetic Field Detector.
Sock Puppet Shakespeare
The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets.
Soon, U.S. students won't know Macbeth. Schools in America are to drop classic books such as Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye from their curriculum in favor of 'informational texts'. Uh-uh. Informational texts. Probably ones that teach how to sign up for food stamps, how to vote Democrat, how to save the planet, how to qualify for welfare, blah, blah, blah.
Pop Quiz
So how well do you think You Know Military Operation Names? Take the quiz and find out. The first couple are easy and then it gets harder. I aced it of course.
Star Wars

How Much We Care About Star Wars Over Time. Seems about right.
Doggeh Video
It's only a matter of time before that thirsty dog figures out how to operate a beer tap.

The Washington Post's dividend payment also stands to benefit those with a significant stake in the company, such as Warren Buffett's firm Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire is its largest shareholder with an estimated 1.7 million shares, which means it could get a roughly $17 million dividend payment.

And when the red warning (Some roads may be unpaved, do you wish to continue) pops up, make sure you have a 4WD vehicle.

I predict that Zimmerman's lawsuit will go .......nowhere.
Really? A guy indicted for murder will sue and win against a major network because they told the news in a naughty way?
Not in the US of A. It is really hard to "prove" that sort of thing, even though the amount of malice and hate at NBC News is palpable.

My grandson, it has suddenly become apparent to me, does not know maps, as he depends on his iPhone navigation.
I had him driving with me to his friend's house (he gets his license next month) and he had me read the route on the iPhone map. Of course, Icould only see a section of the route at a time.
So then we got to his friend's house, and I realized we had taken a circuitous route and if we had gone by the streets I know from years of driving in the area and reading MAPS, we could have cut our time in half.
So for Christmas, one of the thingsI am getting him is a street map of Indianapolis. And Iam going to teach him how to use it.
I don't think they teach much map-reading in schools now. He's an honor student but had no idea how to navigate without the phone.

The Post's main problems are the following: (1) The printed product is available online for free; (2) A lot of the weekend articles are online by Thursday (and free!); and (3) The local coverage is terrible. If the Post wants to be a local paper it's failing miserably. It has to decide whether it was to be a Washington-centric paper or a NYT-clone.

The in-vehicle GPS is a rip-off and is easily surpassed by the cheapest aftermarket unit. You can buy the newest after market unit for about 50% of what a map upgrade costs for the in-vehicle device.

The coach had put together the perfect team for the Chicago Bears. The only thing that was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges and even the Canadian and European Leagues, but he couldn't find a ringer who could ensure a Super Bowl win.
Then one night while watching CNN he saw a war-zone scene in Afghanistan . In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Afghan Muslim soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand-grenade straight into a 15th story window 100 yards away.
KABOOM!
He threw another hand-grenade 75 yards away, right into a chimney.
KA-BLOOEY!
Then he threw another at a passing car going 90 mph.
BULLS-EYE!
"I've got to get this guy!" Coach said to himself. "He has the perfect arm!"
So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football. And the Bears go on to win the Super Bowl.
The young Afghan is hailed as the great hero of football, and when the coach asks him what he wants, all the young man wants is to call his mother.
"Mom," he says into the phone, "I just won the Super Bowl!"
"I don't want to talk to you, the old Muslim woman says."You are not my son!"
"I don't think you understand, Mother," the young man pleads. "I've won the greatest sporting event in the world. I'm here among thousands of my adoring fans."
"No! Let me tell you!" his mother retorts. "At this very moment, there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and I have to keep your sister in the house so she doesn't get raped!" The old lady pauses, and then tearfully says,
" I will never forgive you for making us move to Chicago !!!!

Dog/cat piss will turn wood floors a black color that penetrates the wood deeply and won't wash off. Caught quick enough you may be able to rent a floor sander and sand the black stain out if it hasn't progressed too far.
There's really only one floor suitable for pets - cheap linoleum. Even 1' square vinyl is no good because the piss will seep between the seams and get into the subflooring.

The problem with that is most states have laws that forbid obscuring the plate in any manner. It's only a hop-skip from that to a judge ruling that anything that changes it optically is verboten.
Better, just lobby your local poli-turds to remove the fuckers. They are getting bad press and end up costing more than they take in because of judges asking the city/muni to present a witness.

I have tried Magellan, Garmin, and TomTom. I almost did not try a TomTom because the name was so asinine; however, it is the most customizable of the three (at least for the vintage I tried). The TomTom let's you pick what is displayed from a menu of options, while the others were much more constrained. This may no longer be valid, but I now have two of them and both are still cranking along just fine.
My wife's used vehicle came with a factory GPS and it is a piece of crap (clunky interface and needs a $700 dealer map update), so there is now a TomTom on the windshield.

The following songs are banned from my household at Christmas:
Christmas Shoes
Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
And So This Is Christmas
Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime
Feliz Navidad
None of these put me in a Christmas mood, and instead make me feel like punching people.
Well good. You didn't ban our version of Jingle Bells.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCBhQCCyhTo

I didn't include my most-hated religious carol, "Go Tell It On The Mountain."
Yes, I know it is a spiritual and I am racist for hating it. I hate the sing-song beginning, and I REALLY hate the part that takes the last word of the stanza before the chorus and goes a complete octave swoop in one word!
When I was still a Protestant, I had a pastor who used to have that carol sung almost every week of Advent. It flat-out put me in a bad mood.
So, because I am picky about music, I am now punished by being a Catholic and listening to bad music almost every week. I figure it is that suffering with Christ thing that we Catholics admire. Oh, and we will get a large dose of "Go Tell It On the Mountain." I will be lucky to hear "Adeste Fideles." Suffering is my middle name.

Frosty the Snowman (whom I portrayed in my kindergarten Christmas play)

Yes. It's a losing battle. I have what is supposed to be a serious stainproof carpet. Apparently they didn't test it with dog piss.
There's really only one floor suitable for pets - cheap linoleum. Even 1' square vinyl is no good because the piss will seep between the seams and get into the subflooring.
Laminate flooring is the bomb, if you have pets. I love how easily it cleans up. Looks better than linoleum, too. Tile is fine too, but $$$.

Now that I no longer host Christmas Eve, I am down to one small tree on a table (due to the 3 dogs who like to snatch ornaments or get tangled in the cords and pull the whole thing over). I still put up the old nativity. I buy live poinsettias and greenery for the mantle, so that they can be thrown away.
I bet I have 25 plastic tubs of decorations in the basement storage room. I probably could have an auction.

We also sang something for our Hebrew fellows. I don't know Hebrew, but this is still in my mind from those days (using "cch" for a sort of sound you make with the roof of your mouth, like in L'Chaim or however you spell that):
Some of this may have deteriorated over time and is probably very inaccurate. Can someone identify it anyway?

Words have meanings and impacts. Remember in Egypt, one way to destroy the deceased was to erase their name from everything. Which is why Pharaohs put their name cartouche in secret places. Without a name they are doomed to wander forever. So archeologists by identifying the mummies are doing the deceased a great service, restoring the Afterlife to them.

I've done some drawing and painting as well, but don't practice enough to be very good at it. It's one of the reasons I *don't* want over-arching government funding for the arts since such money usually goes to graphic and dramatic art productions and I'm at best a third-rate graphic artist. I'd much rather the government took out less in taxes so people can buy my awesome scarves, shawls, etc.

The people that bitch about WMT knocking out the "little guy" never mention that WMT actually allows you to buy food and power tools in the same place, because little grocery stores never offered food, power tools, and maybe an internet router...
...AND do it in the middle of the night when there's less maniacs on the road trying to kill you.

Charmed life. Imagine how weird and awesome modern comedy would seem if all the not-funny giggle-of-recognition referentiality it relies on was just surreal nonsense to you. Everything would be like if Rick Shapiro made it.
(Rick Shapiro is a legendary but not famous comedian whose bits are mostly improvised streams of hollered bile and nonsense and snob references that only other comedian/know-it-all/assholes enjoy--like if Dennis Miller was a coked out psycho with no jokes, but still really funny.)

Usually you just pull the turn signal towards you to turn on the brights. However my parents have a chevy malibu that you actually push the turn signal towards the dash to turn on the brights. Oh and I really hate it when they do shit like that. Activating your brights should be standardized because it should be a natural action while driving that you don't have to think about how to do it.

I sold cars for a "living" for a couple of years, first Honda then Nissan. Honda was standardized across the entire product line on the operation of everything. Nissan, with a much larger line, had five or six different control locations or methods of operation for every damned thing. I spent fifteen minutes at the gas station trying to figure out how to open the fricking gas door on a Murano. Turned out you had to press it and it would pop open. I can't even imagine how much money Nissan wastes on design and inventory for all that crap.

Definitely NOT a lot of teeth in these here parts. No money for dental care. Not as bad as my Daddy's people in WV/KY, where I really do think there is some kind of genetic issue with bad enamel.
Heck, most poor white Southerners are overwhelmingly of some sort of British descent and we all know how great those teeth genes are.

Here in western Virginia there are medical "fairs" throughout the region several times a year done by local doctors, dentists, and optometrists. Those greedy bastards spend weekends giving away their time to help these people for no cost, then they turn around and get some of their suppliers to donate products to help these people like lenses, dentures, and medications.
Still doesn't even put a dent in the problem.

I honestly think there is a gene for enamel and many of those in Appalachia didn't get it it. The common belief is that well water is the culprit, but some of it has got to be genetic. And the issue far predates Mt Dew, which is also blamed for it, and no doubt adds to it, but I think were so few other groups to breed with for so long that the bad tooth gene got deeply embedded

I'm nowhere an expert on this stuff, but I see problems. First, the shape of the bullet tip makes it hard to feed in a semi-automatic. Most semi rounds have smooth blunt round tips. Also, the round is long, whereas most acp pistols use much shorter ammo.
The second issue is the gun frame. The .30 cal round is pretty powerful, so you need a frame that can take the pressure.

Old army joke, but for the fact that they also have a template (like draftsmen used for making ellipses, fancy letters, etc) for measuring distance within grid squares.
Either way, like being told to get yourself some new chem-lite batteries or a bucket of poon-tane from the motor pool.

I'm only kind of here.
And a little embarassed. I ordered as a Christmas goft for my eight year old niece a very nice coat that was on clearance from JC Penney. And man alive but JCP.com is run for shit. I was so annoyed since I ordered it last week and had it shipped to the store to save on shipping but never got anything beyond an order confirmation. Nothing listed in my account. No shipping confirmation email. Nada. I write them last night on the order's status, no reply. Check my bank balance and I've been charged. So...what the fuck? I'm sending this stuff overseas, I'm in a rush and pressed for time. So tonight I sent them an email asking to cancel and refund the order and saying JCP.com sucks (I was actually polite, don't get me wrong).
Turns out the damn order arrived at the store today and they left me a message.
Dammit...
Well...that's awesome? I guess? It's a very lovely coat and I'm glad I can send it now. But the JCP website is still run for shit.

To You Our Fallen
The barracks are now silent
Where once your laughter rang,
The steel guitar is broken
Where around your bunks we sang.
As the stars give way to morning
In Oahu's cloud-swept sky,
Old Glory's proudly waving there
Seeped in heroes' crimson dye.
Can you hear us there in heaven
As the dawn patrol takes flight?
On silvery wings your memory soars
In holy freedom's fight.
The kona wind blows softly now,
The palm trees whisper low,
But all America will remember
Whence came this dastard's blow.
Let the Nipponese remember this,
As they cringe beneath the sky,
At Hickam's flaming vengeance
For you, the first to die!

The pawing the ground thing means that any good woman wants a man who has some spirit, some spark of life and passion. The quiet "nice guy" who's afraid to initiate contact, who doesn't know how to pursue her and sweep her off her feet every once in a while won't appeal to her. She wants someone who gives her the since that she is around something powerful that she can't simply push around and control.

Well, the massive infection (one of many) was kinda the last straw. There's also many broken bones in ankle and foot due to RA. She's not an old woman either, only in her 40's, but she's one of the small minority of women that developed extreme RA after a pregnancy, and it brings a slew of complications and auto-immune problems too.
At this point, the amputation looks like the best chance for survival and a prosthetic should improver her mobility considerably over what she's got now.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at December 08, 2012 01:12 AM (08zV/)
.30 Carbine is a very long case for a semiauto pistol. The frame would have to be along the lines of something chambered in .50AE in order to handle the chamber pressures of a (somewhat weak) rifle round, and the length of the cartridge would make the grip dimensions uncomfortable for those without giant hands.

Ouch. The BH and I know a guy who started with food poisoning (and underlying diabetes), went into a strange toxic shock thing in the hospital, developed an abscess in his arm where an IV was, and ended up losing a foot. It was like he was a ball in the pachinko game of suck. Nearly died in the process. Also in his 40's. Great guy, too -- we visited him in the hospital where he had a private room for the price of a shared one because he'd crack up the nurses so bad laughing all the time that his roommates didn't feel safe.
The world is a far less safe place than most appreciate.

Oh well, might as well do my appointed rounds as official closer of dead threads (hey, does this job include any AoSHQ stock options, or at least a cool logo-ed polo shirt, or a sceptre or something?).
GPS vs. old school navigation. Was interested to learn when I toured the newest USS San Diego (amphibious assault ship) pre-commissioning a few months ago that those on the bridge are required do old-school navigation calculations a certain % of the time to keep those skills sharp. (My father and I toured the previous USS San Diego, a fleet-stores/replenishment ship, just after its commissioning back in 1970(?), just across the same pier, in the place now occupied by the USS Midway aircraft carrier museum, so there was a cool and sort of heavy thing about all this).
weft cut and St Patrick, I see you've been discussing the 30 Carbine. I've got two (a current reproduction and a 1943 Quality Hardware), and love 'em. Completely fun plinking rifle - so small and light, and easy to shoot. Easy to see why they became so popular in some of the close-quarters and limited-visibility fighting in the Pacific (especially, when you lift a can or even a bandolier of Garand ammo, along with the rifle itself). Sure it doesn't pack that big of a punch, but at closer ranges and without built-up areas for cover, it's rate of fire and point-and-shoot qualities were quite appealing.
The cartridge is pretty easy to reload, too. Especially as the rifle was built for a specific load, which is easy to replicate (15 grains of H110, 110-grain FMJ bullet). I'm going to load a can full and have hopes of getting the freshly imported wife to get to like the little rifle, so I can buy myself some more range time while maintaining international peace.

Weft-cut was asking about pistols chambered for .30 Carbine out of a liking for the M1 Carbine, but had gotten some bad info regarding its weakness. Sure, it's weak for a rifle round, but it's quite fierce as a pistol round. If 7.62x39 and 5.56x45 are intermediate rifle rounds, . 30 Carbine would be whatever is between intermediate and magnum pistol, no?

I wasn't meaning to be cold -- I feel it deeply, myself. It's a horrible, horrible thing that each step along the cycle seems like it should be no big deal, except it leaves the patient increasingly off-balance for the next step. It increases a fruitless hope, and augments the inevitable despair.
And, yet, overall I am hopeful. I'd love to see Colonel Boyd's work taught in medical schools, as I fervently believe that it would lead to a significant improvement in healthcare. It'll never happen so long as med school is "preparation for the priesthood", and credentialism is king, but I have hope.

He was a fighter pilot whose theories about aircraft and about decision making in combat had a profound impact on the military. He worked with several others to develop theories about aircraft design that led to the F-16 among others. He also developed the OODA loop, which stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. The basic idea is to get ahead of your opponent in the OODA cycle, forcing them to continually react to your actions.

I don't decorate for Christmas, but that's because I live close enough to family that I always visit for holidays anyway. There's little chance of depressing snow down here, but at least when it comes, it's entertaining - the entire midstate craps its collective pants.

Good friend of mine works in logistics for TSC in Brentwood - great company. And yes, Williamson County was named the most conservative-friendly county in the US a while back: http://tinyurl.com/b54p38l . The "guitar-shaped pools" thing is a bit over the top. Most of the county's businesses (>50%) are start-ups in varied fields. Biomed is an up and comer down here.

I know a bunch of city boys from NYC who don't get this that lose their R/C planes out in the bush at the edge of the Glades. They'll stagger around for hours and come back saying they lost their orientation.

Ballistically, the .30 Carbine from the 18" barrel of an M-1/M-2 has the kinetic power at 100 Meters that the .357 Mag has at about 50 Meters.
And yes, the .30 Carbine is a long pistol cartridge, not a full bore rifle cartridge. I have three (all former M-2's reconverted back to M-1) and I love them. At realistic engagement ranges of 25-100 Meters, they are very accurate. It will shoot with my CAR-15 out to about 200 Meters then, it groups wider after that.

From what I've read, the "underpowered" myth can be traced back to two things - grunts scoring hits on an enemy who was wearing heavy clothes where rounds only hit clothing and not flesh, and performance issues with the powder of the day in subzero temperatures. Allegedly one of the additives in the powder which allowed it to function well in high temp / high humidity environments prevented a good burn at very cold temperatures, with muzzle velocities of 650 fps claimed. Since the results would be very difficult to replicate, I guess this will remain anecdotal.

Colorado Alex, that's exactly the thinking behind the standard requirement for the Navy bridge personnel to demonstrate their proficiency with traditional methods on a regular basis. And damn right, I would think infantry/mobile land units would be required to be able to operate like it's 1944 at the drop of a hat. There are mental skills and confidence that come from "older" techniques that are very useful in all situations.
St Patrick, I did read your exchang re 30 Carbine in semi-autos. Of course there is the Blackhawk revolver in 30 Carbine. Got to fire one once at a local pistol match - very mild and fun to shoot, with factory ammo. Kinda think I'll go with 45 Long Colt when I get to my own Blackhawk some day, though (something about those huge, old-school-looking cartridges that appeals to me, and I hear they're fun and easy to load).

Agree, I think .30 Carbine from a revolver would be a blast, in both a figurative and literal sense. I just can't see a pistol chambered in that cartridge being successful (there was one, once). I don't reload, but the guys I know who do suggest starting with straight-walled pistol cases, so .45LC is perfect, especially since if you're making cowboy loads you won't have to worry about overpressure, assuming you don't drop two loads of powder in the case. You can also cast your own bullets and save even more money if you're of a mind to. IIRC, .45LC can be reloaded for $0.05 / per if loaded light and casting.

Perhaps one last joyous hurrah before DOOM?
Posted by: The Political Hat at December 08, 2012 02:46 AM (sZTYJ)
As far as joyous hurrah's before DOOM, I'm reasonably pleased with my progress to date. There's a new Schwab Global account, and I'm trying to liquidate all my ADRs and repurchase selected amounts in actual shares on foreign exchanges. It means a 1% currency-changing fee now, but forever liberation from $20/year ADR charges -- and, you get liquidity (if 1,000,000 shares trade each day on the equity's home market, you'd be fortunate to see 20,000 shares of ADRs trade in the US). Besides which, there are far more companies with shares available through Schwab on foreign exchanges than companies with ADRs traded in US Markets.
I'm trying to shift all my foreign stocks into taxable accounts and US stocks into IRAs. Yeah, that's dumb -- just give away foreign tax credit.
I'm trying to take a bunch of capital gains....being that the favorable tax treatment for them was part of the Bush Tax Cuts that are demonized by the left. Take 'em now at 15% or eat 'em later at 39.6%.
Clean up some of the "dust bunnies" in the corners. For example, I own (somehow) 256 shares of NGGTF.....which are "ordinaries" of National Grid PLC of the UK that trade in the US on the "pink sheets" OTC market....and had trading volume of -0- today. That's right, zippidy-doo-dah. Bupkis. But you can also get the ADR, NGG, which traded 201,350 units where each unit is 5 ordinaries. Or, perhaps, if you like the regular ordinary shares, you could trade em on NG:XLON at 7.07 pounds in London where 4,124,745 shares traded. With my new Schwab Global account, I'm repatriating those bad boys to the London exchange.
And, finally, I'm converting some standard IRAs to Roths. Problem is, you pay tax on that now -- and the time-honored rule is "a tax deferred is a tax avoided" -- but here's the thing: (1) there is no "income-averaging" any more, and (2) the curve for taxes being progressive is about to get steeper, and (3) worst of all, they're floating the "seize the private pensions to bail out Social Security" meme again. So it makes sense (in my case, YMMV) to do a chunk of conversion in any down year.....to prospectively do "income averaging" instead of retrospectively doing so, and to enable someone to snag the Roth IRA from the pension-grabbers if they get closer to their goals.
Anyway, it's keeping me from panhandling on the street, or wearing a sandwich board and parading around the Federal Building downtown, so that's probably enough of a good thing. And steady progress is being made.

Are you the guy who programs and integrates all the sensors / inputs for a particular system such that they all "talk" to each other?
Posted by: StPatrick_TN at December 07, 2012 11:48 PM (lJJMb)
St Patrick, that's what I recall about the 30 Carbine power issues in Korea as well. Especially the cold temps affecting powder ignition and consequently velocity. I believe the story was that ammo produced for the Pacific in WWII was configured for long shelf life in tropical conditions and this resulted in sub-standard results in extreme cold.
In any case, the paper targets I shoot seem to be quite vulnerable to my 30 Carbine reloads. It is a fun little rifle with historic flair (who can forget Col. Bat Guano waving around his carbine while conversing with Group Capt. Mandrake in Doctor Strangelove).
