Does the US Really Have an Out of Control Shooting Problem?
Well that's always the justification from the Left for yet more gun control laws but when you look at this chart, the absolute number of shooting deaths is actually rather low compared to all the other methods of killing available to even a minimally competent murder-death-killer. And is basically the same as it was in 1976 despite the US population growing by almost 50%.
As Bruce McQuain points out "in 2010 more people were beaten to death by fists ( 758 ) than were killed by "other guns", aka rifles of any sort". So perhaps some kind of fist licensing is needed before another assault weapon ban.
And when you divide 8,775 shooting deaths by the US population of 312.8 million, you find that statistically you have a 1 in 35, 714 chance of being killed with a gun handgun. By comparison here are the odds of dying from other causes:
Chance of dying from any kind of injury during the next year: 1 in 1,820
Chance of dying from intentional self-harm: 1 in 9,380
Chance of dying from an assault: 1 in 16,421
Chance of dying from a car accident: 1 in 18,585
Chance of dying from any kind of fall: 1 in 20,666
[shooting falls here]
Chance of dying from accidental drowning: 1 in 79,065
Chance of dying from exposure to smoke, fire, and flames: 1 in 81,524
Chance of dying in an explosion: 1 in 107,787
So you can see that being shot to death fits somewhere between falls and drowning as a cause of death. Not good but not necessarily a crisis suddenly requiring new Constitutionally-questionable laws.
Swedish Leftists Suddenly Discover the Utility of Bourgeois Marriage
So Swedish author, Stieg Larsson, who wrote the popular Millennium trilogy died in 2004 right as his popularity was taking off. He and his long-time companion old lady, Eva Gabrielsson, had rejected marriage as a "bourgeois morality" thing since they were committed leftists. But when he died he left no will and Sweden doesn't have the legal concept of common-law marriage, so now Eva is battling his extended family over ownership of his estate which is now extremely valuable thanks to book and movie rights. And odds are that she will lose.
So I guess those bourgeois were on to something after all. And not to go full-on Burkean here but maybe, just maybe social traditions aren't just arbitrary rules set down by the elite - but are solutions to common human problems that have been worked out over millennia. But hey progressives always know better than everyone else who has ever lived.
If You Want To Enjoy An Artist's Work...
Never find out their political views if you can help it. And that applies to George R.R. Martin as well:
Martin, an avowed Democrat from Bayonne, N.J. who has described President Obama as "the most intelligent president we've had since Jimmy Carter", doesn't often write about politics on his blog, but when he does, it is usually to speak about something he feels strongly about, be it TSA screenings or the Affordable Care Act.
Should You Ignore Your Oven Dial When Cooking?
Well take any listed cooking temperature with a huge grain of salt.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that 350 on the dial means 350 in the oven. You'd be wrong, though. When you set an oven to 350 degrees, there isn't a single spot inside of it that stays at 350 degrees for the duration of a bake session....The 350-degree instruction is often just a default, anyway. Around the time that manufacturers put temperature dials on ovens, cookbooks had to convert their old terminology into degrees. A "moderate" oven became 350 degrees, and few writers bothered to test if 350 was really better for an individual recipe than, say 360 or 380.
Mark Bittman, New York Times food columnist and author of How To Cook Everything (the Joy of Cooking for our generation) agrees that "oven temperatures are a convention."
To say this reviewer hated Chris Brown's latest album would be an unrealistically optimistic view of it.
Le Horreur: Pictures of VS Model Doutzen Kroes UNRETOUCHED!
Kroes posing in various VS swimsuits -- do reveal the unmistakable idiosyncrasies of natural beauty: a veiny hand, lighting imperfections, stray pieces of hair. You can also spot glimpses of the flesh-colored thong that Kroes is wearing underneath each suit, which we assume is for sanitary reasons if different girls are modeling the same suits.
Prepare yourself to see a lot of sharp elbows and veiny hands.

One core problem with the left - they consistently destroy traditions that stand in the way of acquiring power without ever asking WHY the tradition exists.
Tradition certainly isn't always right, but a rational person would stop to analyze what the functional point of the tradition is first...

million, you find that statistically you have a 1 in 35, 714 chance of
being killed with a gun." Note also that the 8,775 omits "other guns" and is just "handgun." Finally, on the graph at least, other guns looks much higher than 758--although it also appears to end before 2010, when the 758 was cited by McQain. Still, hard to believe it would drop that far from around 2,000 that quickly.
I support the Second Amendment, but nevertheless there's a lot of loose shit in those statistics.
Posted by: Nicholas Kronos at August 13, 2012 10:07 PM (qyQRd)
1. 'Other guns' includes shotguns, rifles, plasma rifles(<50W), zip guns and every other type. Per the FBI only 758 people were killed with rifles in 2010.
2. I changed the label to make it clear that 1-in-35,714 only applies to handguns.
3. You try summarizing a whole body of statistics accurately without just listing out all the data - it ain't easy.

I banged a girl with dreadlocks once, in my post-divorce phase. It was serviceable, like all drunken conquests.
So, I wake up in her apartment the next morning and she has a couple of decent Martin guitars, so I pick one up and start playing, muted, just to kill some time.
She wakes up after a few minutes and starts yelling, "Put it down!"
"Are you serious?" I asked her.
"Nobody touches my guitars but me! Nobody!"
So I put it down carefully and tell her, "You know, if you treated your vagina with as much respect as that guitar, your daddy wouldn't drink himself to sleep every night, trying to forget that it's too late to have another little girl that isn't a whore."
Since I was already dressed, I just left

Do you see that one awful book of his (I'm too lazy to look up the title) in which he gave up on humans and made up a race of aliens that were communists at a genetic level?
The same guy screws Baen authors by refusing to sell e-books through Amazon and Barnes and Noble, because he cannot accept that the venue deserves a piece of the action for creating a high quality environment in which to present your product.
I wouldn't recommend Baen to any writing looking to enter the field. Which is a shame considering what Baen once represented for the SF and Fantasy genres.

I loved his Sword of Truth series, right up until the final book, which was just horrid. I think the biggest problem I had with it is that he suddenly veered away from the anti-communist tone of the first eleven books to go full-on anti-religion. I suspect, now that I no longer agreed with the basic political thrust of his prose, that the flaws in his writing really jumped out at me.
But that wasn't the only problem. Characters who'd been around since the beginning underwent drastic personality changes upon realizing The Truth. And Richard lost all his eloquence when he was speaking out against religion instead of communism. He went from making poignant speeches on the virtues of profit that would make Ayn Rand proud, to having nothing better to say than, "I can't believe a grown man would believe something so childish!".
I understand Goodkind has started a new series about Richard and Kahlan. I'll pass, thanks.

A record-breaking giant Burmese python, an invasive species invading Florida, was captured in the Everglades.
The big female python weighed in at 164.5 pounds, was 17 feet and 7 inches long, about a foot wide in some places, and was cultivating 87 eggs inside her oviducts.

The Treasury Department expects to lose about $25 of the $85 billion used to bailout the auto industry, which is 15 percent higher than previously estimated, The Detroit News reports.
“In a monthly report sent to Congress on Friday, the Obama administration boosted its forecast of expected losses by more than $3.3 billion to almost $25.1 billion, up from $21.7 billion in the last quarterly update,” according to the Detroit News article.
“The report may still underestimate the losses. The report covers predicted losses through May 31, when GM’s stock price was $22.20 a share,” it adds.
Indeed, considering that on Monday GMÂ’s stock fell 0.3 percent to $20.47, the losses may be greater than the latest report estimates:

Bull crap. During the Bush vs Kerry election, Martin jokingly threatened to delay the release of Dance With Dragons for another year if everyone who read his blog didn't vote for Kerry.
This, of course, was before he decided that his "prologue" for DWD needed to be a separate book, and then decided that separate book was too long and that he would have to split it up into two books- A Feast for Crows and DWD.
In the meantime, he's been flittering between one cos-play-saturated-convention after another, doing comic books, author signings, roll playing games, oh- and yea- an HBO TV series. And people wonder WHY it's taking him so damn long to finish. And what the hell is up with the last two books, nothing happens, damn you Martin!
Not that I'm bitter or anything. Bastage.

I gave up when one of the books seemed to be a bunch of sex scenes with a vague suggestion of a story that she forgot to write. Obsidian Butterfly, maybe. I just remember thinking the title character could have been eliminated and it wouldn't have changed the book much.
I tried to read several China Mieville novels and never felt rewarded for the effort. Strange worlds, strange people, doing strange things but none of it interesting.

In such faraway places like New Guinea the natives would see these magical birds drop out of them strange objects. Naturally the natives would go investigate what these packages were if they fell nearby. When they found things like Bully Beef and Spam in them, it was a Eureka moment for the locals.
So the natives would create in clearings effigies that resembled the magical birds and would perform ceremonies calling upon the gods to grant another miracle. A miracle of more packages falling from the sky to feed the people.
Thus the Cargo Cults were born.

. . . but we're a distinct minority. And the active fans who run conventions are pretty uniformly liberal, too -- see the Wiscon fiasco involving Elizabeth Moon, for instance.
And more importantly most if not all of the editors in the field (other than the ones at Baen) are solidly liberal. Is there a conscious bias against conservative writers? No. But it's harder to build those important personal ties with people whose politics you despise.

Somebody else already mentioned Terry Goodkind, and I do like his work... in moderation. I wish he hadn't stuck to the one series for so long.
Neal Stephenson seems to be genuinely neutral in his books. His military, christian, southern and/ or conservative characters are not your average stereotypes. (like, say, Stephen King is likely to depict) That, and he's a damn good writer. Definitely worth reading if you have the stamina for long books.

No no tradition and wisdom teach us nothing, we must all throw it out and never look back. We've evolved past those white European male phallocratic rules, anyway. History will teach us nothing, didn't you listen to Sting? You aren't the boss of me, fascist!!!!
The truth is, the biggest problem we ran into as a people is when we stopped passing down WHY we believed in and did certain things and just started living them by pattern and tradition. Then when young people asked why, parents had no answers.
When you combine that with a generation (cough*BOOMERS*cough) that refused to trust wisdom and tradition because they weren't given an answer they liked, well disaster results.
The truth is, some things you just have to trust people who've gone before you on. Some things can't really be explained rationally but have been experienced and the knowledge painfully gained. Kids hate that, and they're all taught every day to ignore authority and doubt parents to begin with.

I think their raison d'etre is more old fashioned. It goes back to the whole good verses evil, God verses Man thing. Mass murder is just the by-product.

Hi, Lou! Liberals like to hold people who don't march in step with them to standards they cannot possibly meet themselves. That word "hypocrisy"? That's the reason the word was invented.
Went to a local pub with another Cowboys fan and 2 Raider fans tonight. Bo-ring game, so we just drank, rolled dice and played cards.
I think the first preseason game, Saints vs Arizona, ruined the rest of preseason for me, as I thought it was overall a pretty good game.

Plus discipline! Lord knows I wouldn't be worth two shits as a writer because I'd always be gettin' distracted and do the following sequence:
Fold 3 garments
Wash 2 pans, 3 knives
Dust blind on one window where the morning sun highlights the cat hair
Wash the blender
Grind coffee
Scrub toilet
Visit AOSAQ
rinse, repeat

It's like it always is, the GOP gets small donations from middle-income people and the big money unions, Hollywood types and most of Wall Street fund the party of the "little guy".
But that cover isn't even meant to persuade anybody. It's 100% sour grapes. They're already lining up the excuses for failure.

Let's see. An elite world class athlete who has been in training for years to peak at this moment, decides to have an egg McMuffin and is criticized for it. A young woman who has been on a regimented diet for years to lead up to this. A young woman who probably eats twice the number of calories the USDA recommends because of her training regimen. A young woman who is athletic and an inspiration to all young women regardless of race. Criticized by a woman who has an ass the size of a Yugo, who couldn't walk her size 15's across a balance beam. A woman who probably thinks her brick shooting choom head of a husband is a real athlete because he is a jock sniffer. A woman who criticizes what everyone else eats while she eats backstage at Paula Dean's show like a frat house at an all you can eat pizza buffet on the night of Homecoming.
I always thought that the Dems said that eating those things once in a while was okay, I guess I actually believed them on that shit, not anymore.

I worked with Pro athletes years ago, those guys are damn machines. Gabby is on par, if not higher, in terms of discipline than those guys. Everything about her life has been regimented, including how and when she eats and trains. She has discipline that Michelle could never understand. A discipline that a 16 year old girl has to train 7 days a week for years, a discipline her husband doesn't even have, a 50 year old man who can't quit smoking fucking cigarettes. And that fat ass bitch has the nerve to criticize a 16 year old girl for eating an Egg McMuffin. Eff her.

Wouldn't you like to think? I'm sure MO thinks she was being "helpful" or something. Although it's pretty clear that it was her inate spitefulness breaking through. How does it hurt her (and notice in her world it's about *her*) that some kid has a treat to celebrate an achievement? Leaving aside the fact that this particular kid almost certainly works like a dog and generally is very careful of what she eats.

Liberals are fine with containing intensely contradictory modes of thought. Look at how many Hollywood types will make movies where they heroically gun down a zillion bad guys but want complete and utter disarmament of the proles in real life.
Just like actors, comic book writers fantasize for a living. They rarely place any rigorous testing on their ideas.

Wow, the stupid is strong in this one. You are of the opinion that only those special people can have a gun for security, the proles cannot. Fuck that. I have been around firearms my whole life. Back when I was 8 years old I was shooting a fucking 22 at summer camp, while being supervised by a kid who was probably 16 years old. No one died. I walked around our house in the country with a 22 at 9 years old. We were taught how to use the gun, and how to respect them.
If you read the Constitution of the United States of America, it says that our rights are "God given", not man given. I am not a liberal, I don't believe that Barack Obama is a god like you do. So I will continue to advocate for the private ownership of firearms, and yes, I would love to have a javelin missile.
Also, our thanks to your boyfriend for his service, and our sympathies to him for having to crawl on top of you to give you a mercy fucking. Now get the fuck out of here, and go home and get your shinebox.

Correct, rights are part of being human. It is innate in all human beings to have the right to life, to liberty, to property, to self defense, and so on. You cannot take rights away, you can only restrict their free exercise.

One of the main problems I have, when trying to converse with libtards, is this. "Well, what about Catholic priests?" "Well, what about the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition?" Always the same... They just don't use logic, and they never generalize except when it's irrational to do so. (Generalization, of course, in the good way. Like my kitteh generalizes humans. She lies supine for hubby and me, and darts away like a rocket if it's anyone else. Seems like it might be a survival instinct or something./) Sorry if this post seems irrational! The pain meds are making me loopy, but alert! I am sure you morons are astute enough to cipher my meaning.

Right?
So why aren't a million+ Americans a year dying from an assault by a firearm?
Oh, that's not what you said? Ohhhhh. you said 1/320 DEATHS result from firearm assaults.
You said it right here:
"the nsc, whose mandate it is to research such things, offers this impelling [sic] alternative: ONE IN THREE-HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (1/321) deaths is from assault with a firearm."
So.....according to you...roughly 3/1000'ths of all deaths are caused by firearms.
Right ?? RIGHT??
So...Americans are 320 times likely to die from other causes than from firearms...and you think this is a "problem"?
You want us to get upset by this....why???? Did you flunk math in high school?

the core philosophy behind leftist ideology is exactly what it has always been and always will be -- slavery. once people figure out that they are mortal they start to covet the time of your life, and then start scheming up ways to confiscate what you produce with your time. slavers used to be honest, now they have to mislead, lie and cheat -- but their goal of confiscating your time has never changed.

JMS did a LOT of animation writing work. Has a ton of stories. Like Superman not being allowed to smash through a giant robot because the BSandP guy said it was shaped like a man and therefore had a soul, making Superman's action murder rather than destroying some equipment.
There was a battle over the use of the title Necronomicon because a BSandP guy insisted it was a real book and kids shouldn't be exposed to it.
Script with a Star trek ghost ship parody (We're dead, Jim.) referred to a Janice Rand-ish character as having a basket-weave hairdo. Korean animators drew her to appear she had an actual basket growing from her head.

@709 If you read the Constitution of the United States of America, it says that our rights are "God given", not man given.
Point of Information: That's the "Declaration of Independence", and the exact words are "by our Creator". Reasonable people recognize that this meant of the supernatural variety, but that's the way Deists (who were writing it) talk about things.
The Constitution is remarkable in that it has no appeals to a diety of any kind, something highly unusual for its time. It started with "We the People", in big letters to underscore the point that this was a man-made entity. Lincoln later put it succinctly as "Government of, for, and by the people."
It seems like the discussion here is about guns rights. The point is, the Founders - and the people - weren't talking about making sure your buddy Joe could carry a gun so he could go hunting on the weekends or hang out at the gun range for kicks. It even goes beyond defending ones personal safety, and beyond defending ones own property - it was a matter of local citizens having the right to defend their community.
Beyond that, the Founders knew that when any government throughout history was ready to start some serious tyranny, the first thing they would want to do is disarm the population, so they would be defenseless against the government. So it was a tacit defense against the government as well.

There was one murder in 20 years in the rural NY area I grew up in, which equates to about a ~1/100k 20 year average (very enviable). And that murder was a strangulation and the perp wasn't charged criminally. She was packed off to the loony bin.

And 1 in 163 are from falls. Twice as many people fall to death as get shot?
I think they are including being beaten to dath with a gun in that stat ... and maybe even falling on one.
And intentional self-harm is at 1 in 109? Three times more likely than your handgun fear? You have more of a chance of being caught in some suicidal idiot's spastic self-killing attempt than being shot to death ... as per your stat people.
Your numbers are very funky, anyway ... just like you.

A few years ago there was a terrific crime map of Los Angeles County. It showed you could cut the major crimes rate by over 90% just by bombing a few square miles out of existence.

756I don't understand. People use Facebook to talk to each other? I thought it was just a place for entering contest drawings. That is all I've ever used it for.
There's a chat feature, I guess, but I don't think anybody really talks. There's the kind of sanitizes, feel-good newsy stuff ("Hey, my friend got married!", or "Oh, no - poor Sally is in the hospital!"), but actual discussion is practically considered bad manners, from what I can tell. There's also a lot of cutsy mind-numbingly stupid humor, and pictures of cats and what I ordered for breakfast.

Ahem, I was going to reference the "Tottin/Ellis" report from 2005 and join their conclussions to the 2012 findings of Neighbert. There is some leyway in the chartographs that might suggest that Neighbert was atuned to the scaled difference of the Polyomegliatherm layers first found in the Colton diggs in or about 2001 in the Dartoo riverbed exploartion. The detailed collection of sandstrat by team Colton showed for the first time that multi-invertabrates were indeed present far earlier than had been docummented by Tottin/Ellis

Shooter has often said that his ideas for New Universe wound up serving as the basis for Valiant.

I don't worry about it on threads like the ONT, but most of my daytime links will have preview and a reference to the link source.

What? Are you kidding? That is when it got good! It also helped that they got rid of the painfully dumb book that had a group of pro football players being adventurer/superheroes in their spare time. That one was just painful. Kickers, Inc. I now recall. (Meaning I looked it up on Wikipedia.) A prime example of why Tom DeFalco should be an editor and not a writer, if he has to be in comics at all.
The real problem was that the entire line was intended to appeal not to existing comics readers but to kids age 8 and up who could get started without being overwhelmed by continuity backlogs decades in the making. This to me is always a huge mistake. When I was that age I preferred to struggle to understand comics aimed at older readers, whatever few existed. Some of the attempts by writers who went on to do much better work are surprisingly bad. For instance, the original Deathlok is nearly incomprehensible. You couldn't tell if it was taking place right now, a few years in the future, or several decades hence. But it was far more adult than nearly anything else in the main Marvel line back then.

"690The core philosophy behind leftist ideology is anti-Christian, its from the other side, to put it bluntly. Yet people have always been able to rationalize and compartmentalize parts of their life. Like the guy that comes to church and seems upright, but he's molesting a daughter or cheating on his wife. Sinful humans are messed up that way."
Actually, the two aren't as incompatible as you'd like to think. They both call for the individual to sacrifice themselves, the real difference is whether it is for the benefit of "society" (which is a euphemism for "the government authorites") or "for God" (which in practice is essentially means "obey the religious authorities"). The Bible's description of the form of government that the apostles established was startlingly communistic - everybody was required to surrender their land to THEM, so THEY could decide how it would best serve the community. You were even required to fink on your spouse, and the penalty for non-compliance was "giving up the ghost" (a euphemism for "suddenly turning up dead").
The real problem with the "core philosophy behind leftist ideology" is that it is anti-American, which is to say that it is counter to the rights of the individual. As Obama so eloquently explained in Roanoke, they believe - quite literally - in "people of, for, and by the government". Lincoln eloquently described the idea of America as "government of, for, and by the people," so it's clear that Obama and the left are COMPLETELY anti-American.
When a conservative wants something, they form a company and make it. When a liberal wants something, they form a gang to try to terrorize and intimidate others into giving them what they want, and the government is the best possible tool to use for that, if you can seize control of it. There is an inherent thuggishness about them.

The big difference being that Byrne can actually write. His FF run was pretty good.
McFarlane by his own admission is borderline illiterate. He doesn't know that when he steals from Byrne that Byrne was referencing Moby Dick or some such. He thinks when he steals from another comic book writer that it's a first generation copy. Spawn was one big mish-mash of shoplifting.

It's worth torrenting just to see how things evolved. Some of the concepts were quite advanced for the day. But the narrative was really clumsy, seeking to achieve things the writer hadn't enough practice in and held back by the terseness of the medium compared to a prose storytelling effort. Doug Moench used a lot of the same idea in his Electric Warrior for DC but had grown hugely as a writer. That series was was cancelled just as all of the elements came together. It isn't clear if the ending is a highly compressed version of what he always intended or something he whipped up on short notice when told he had X number of issues left and no more.

This is radically and fundamentally false. There is no place in the Bible which says that the proper way is to live in a commune of Christians, and in fact they were told by Christ to get out into the world and reach out to others, not cluster in Jerusalem and live in a group. Eventually they were forced to leave.
The example you're speaking of died not because they didn't share with the commune, but because they lied about how much they were sharing and made a profit off the people. They were under no Biblical compulsion whatsoever, of any kind, but were voluntarily donating to help each other out.
This is one of the most annoying and blatantly false myths the left tries to impose on the Bible and it infuriates me. Its a combination of Biblical and historical evidence that does horrific violence to Christian theology.
