FYI as of 21:30 blog time both Margaret Thatcher and Abe Vigoda are still alive.

67 Years Ago Today

Both the sailor and the nurse are still alive and tell their story here. You'll also find out who the woman smiling on the left is.

Obama Keeps Digging: You Didn't Build That - You Were Just 'Lucky' and 'Blessed'

Yep according to Obama being wealthy is just a turn of the roulette wheel away so of course the government deserves an extra share of your 'winnings'. The first $250K you make is your own but everything after that is only loosely 'yours'.

One month to the day after his infamous 'you didn't build that' speech, President Obama's description of wealthy people did not include "smart" or "hardworking," as he instead ascribed their success to good luck.

"If you're lucky enough, and fortunate enough, and been blessed enough to be in the other two percent, the top two percent, you still get a tax cut for your first $250,000 of income," Obama said during a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa. "All we're saying is after that, maybe you can do a little bit more to help pay down this deficit and invest in things like education that help our economy grow."

Remembering Maximilian Kolbe

It's easy to talk a good game in life - it's another to actually live it.

During the Second World War, he provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including 2,000 Jews whom he hid from Nazi persecution in his friary in Niepokalanów.

On 17 February 1941, he was arrested by the German Gestapo and imprisoned in the Pawiak prison. On 28 May, he was transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner #16670.

At the end of July 1941, three prisoners disappeared from the camp, prompting SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl Fritzsch, the deputy camp commander, to pick 10 men to be starved to death in an underground bunker in order to deter further escape attempts. When one of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, "My wife! My children!", Kolbe volunteered to take his place.

In the starvation cell, he celebrated Mass each day and sang hymns with the prisoners.

He led the other condemned men in song and prayer and encouraged them by telling them they would soon be with Mary in Heaven. Each time the guards checked on him, he was standing or kneeling in the middle of the cell and looking calmly at those who entered. After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe remained alive. The guards wanted the bunker emptied and they gave Kolbe a lethal injection of carbolic acid. Some who were present at the injection say that he raised his left arm and calmly waited for the injection.

Kolbe was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and today is his feast day.

The Slow Motion Collapse of California

The Cal State University system has now announced that most campuses won't be accepting any new students for the spring. And only non-California or international students for graduate programs. Because money.

Cal State leaders have told the university's 23 campuses they will not be allowed to admit California graduate students for the spring term, which starts in January. Budget cuts made the system in the coming spring term unable to afford residents' heavily discounted education, campus leaders were told.

But nonresident students -- who pay considerably higher fees -- remain welcome, at least at some campuses, and that has become an issue leading some rebellious graduate schools to turn away the non-Californians -- and the financial windfall they would bring in.

So a state university system has decided to exclude the very students it was created to support. What exactly are California taxpayers getting for their taxes that go to the CSU system then?

StrangerDanger!!

This cheesy PSA from the late 80s/early 90s pretty much teaches kids that all adults are possible Decepticons just waiting for the chance to rape them - which is only half true.

And despite everything my parents and well-meaning PSAs have taught me if the battery lady wants me to go off with her, well I'm going - candy or no candy! The Hottie Trap is simply too strong to resist.

Ladies, Is Your Anus Too Boring?

So you've bleached it, buttazled it, and still need to punch it up a bit? Well you can always do some bunghole redecorating with an anal tattoo.

"Dude, it feels so f**king good," screams the naked woman getting her boyfriend's name tattooed in her asshole at a Florida tattoo convention. "There is no f**king way that's true!" responds me, the woman who been inked three times (but never on my ass or butt-hole region, for the record). I'm just not buying it. That shit has to hurt. Although Asshole Tattoo Girl makes a valiant effort to convince us it doesn't. Also, she appears to be taking shots or something while the gun is in her anus.

1 I have a few thoughts....anyway good evening.

I need to explain why I think we have to be ready to run as clean a personal attack campaign as humanly possible.

I'll do it over a few posts, I think I figured out why Mitt Romney is a goddamned genius.

1) we have a deficit problem 1.7 trillion is ridiculous without a general war and military spending is only at most 20% far below the 42% peak for ww2.

2) we have a debt problem we are finally OVER a whole years economy in debt THANKS BARACK!

3) we have a 220 trillion dollar unfunded liability problem because of entitlements.

The American people deserve the truth any “pool of money” sitting in DC is fair game to politicians….

Obama made what is coming possible to put it in perspective he took about 1/20th of an entire years economy in one sitting from one of our most sacred programsÂ….

as Slo Joe says: that is a big effinÂ’ deal!

1)Mitt is not bloodied too badly with likely voters, he is actually gaining and Barack is slipping

2)Romney understands the whole PAC thing is overstated the candidate is still held liable for the sins and overreachesÂ….look at the revulsion to the Mitt Time Travel cancer eyes thingÂ…..nobody buys the fig leaves

3)who gives a damn barack Obama raided Black cookie jars just like every Americans

Let Barack have the politics of divisionÂ….

the whole of us is more powerful than any set of fractionsÂ….

“winning” does not mean you have to make the other guy stumble it means you have to beat him…

this meme will beat him.

He simply cannot be trusted will work trust me.

The hole was not developed overnight and the American worker is vulnerable to just shutting the spigot off.

This is you opportunity to have people WANT the monster shackled but YOU have to be patient enough to get the beast under control enough to take a hold of.

If Barack Obama had never raided the cookie jar on this scale we could not have this chance to have this move be trusted more than political restraint.

I know it sucks but this is our best chance at a big enough wave the donks HAVE to cut a deal and we can purge the idealistic bastard regulating this country into stagnation out of power.

Please think it through I get it and I have posted long screeds about Smoot-Hawley and the lies that got us here in the pastÂ….

it is why I was so giddy the last two days.

This is it people Barack Obama broke faith with every working American to sell a program that still doesnÂ’t insure 33 millionÂ….

he sold what people view as a cadillac for a yugo

This WILL WORK

any personal attack along normal lines will hurt our chance to bleed people from himÂ…

he is in trouble with his base he couldn’t even fill Chicago for his “birthday” all we do by hitting him like he hits us through his surrogates is attack their wounded Me$$iah….

we won’t get ‘em all but we’ll get enough….

McCain would have beaten Barack this way had he not quit competing twice and endorsed himÂ….

RomneyÂ’s silent lack of doing so thus far is all thatÂ’s needed.

He smiles wanly and says, “hi you may have heard about me….we can all do better than this…”

Flamethrowing stuff that is already known fires up BarackÂ’s base

everything our movement does past decorum hurts usÂ…

I get that this is counter intuitive, and I KNOW YOU ARE ANGRY hell we all are at how much the media lied for him and how the rules are differentÂ….

60 (Reuters) — A group of former U.S. intelligence and Special Forces operatives is set to launch a media campaign, including TV ads, that scolds President Barack Obama for taking credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden and argues that high-level leaks are endangering American lives. Leaders of the group, the Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund Inc, say it is nonpartisan and unconnected to any political party or presidential campaign. It is registered as a so-called social welfare group, which means its primary purpose is to further the common good and its political activities should be secondary. In the past, military exploits have been turned against presidential candidates by outside groups, most famously the Swift Boat ads in 2004 that questioned Democratic nominee John Kerry’s Vietnam War service. The OPSEC group says it is not political and aims to save American lives. Its first public salvo is a 22-minute film that includes criticism of Obama and his administration. The film, to be released on Wednesday, was seen in advance by Reuters. “Mr. President, you did not kill Osama bin Laden, America did. The work that the American military has done killed Osama bin Laden. You did not,” Ben Smith, identified as a Navy SEAL, says in the film. “As a citizen, it is my civic duty to tell the president to stop leaking information to the enemy,” Smith continues. “It will get Americans killed.” An Obama campaign official said: “No one in this group is in a position to speak with any authority on these issues and on what impact these leaks might have, and it’s clear they’ve resorted to making things up for purely political reasons.”

89 Actually, if you look at the red areas in the bar map most of the red areas are very cold and or snowy. The exception is San Francisco where you need alcohol to get through a day living there or you need some alcohol to get yourself excited about going off to take it in the a-- or swallow a c---.

One thing the Republicans should be thinking about is ways to make Democrat constituencies pay back as much of this debt as possible.

Presuming of course the Republicans ever get around to cutting spending themselves, and we are still in a position to actually ever pay down the debt.

18-1, I recall Goldhagen (Hitler's Willing Executioners) focused mostly - at least made news, historically speaking - on the special police battalions that did so much of the "routine" murder in Poland and the other eastern territories.   Not very much on the high-level stuff like the role of the churches, the Nazi interactions with the Vatican, etc.

I believe the middle volume of Richard Evan's Nazi history trilogy deals extensively with the resistance of the churches to the early euthanasia programs (dry runs for what came later in some respects).   Your point about that is correct, and it's a very impressive (and sad) story.

As to the famous VJ Day photo, until recently there was a nice 100-ft tall statue of the event right next to the USS Midway museum in San Diego.  Today I heard it will be replaced (I was worried to see it gone a few weeks ago) with a permanent metal statue.  It's great.  Right next to it is a great monument to Bob Hope and the USO - to the other side is a nice memorial to Taffy III (the gallant task group that confronted an enormous Japanese surface force at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944).  Had the pleasure of explaining all three to a Scottish tourist a few weeks back when I was down there during the lunch break from jury duty/selection (wasn't selected).

180 The National WWII Museum in New Orleans is making progress restoring PT-305.

http://tinyurl.com/8m9heel

PT-305 is a Higgins of New Orleans built 78ft PT boat.  The boat saw action in the Mediterranean.  She participated in the invasion of Elba, remember this island was a place Napoleon spent some time.  Though her oddest mission happened on April 19/20 1944 when PT-305 and PT-302 fired the last three Mark VIII torpedoes on hand into the harbor of Porto Maurizio.  A single loud explosion was heard.  Once operations in the Mediterranean were concluded, PT-305 and the other boats were shipped back to New York.  In New York they were being readied for combat operations in the Pacific when the war ended.

186 138 So here is a random question - how long should a man's pant leg be?

I went to dinner with my mom tonight and she told me my pants were too short. Standing they go to my shoes, sitting 2-3 inches above.

Posted by: 18-1 at August 14, 2012 10:23 PM (AUeaU)

I'm outing myself as an asshole here, but you asked, and I do know the answer:  pants with a crease should have either a half-break or full-break (the break being how much the crease near your shin collapses) when standing, unless you're British or an otherwise compromised Euro.  If the front seam of your pants does not have a "kink" in it when you stand, the pants are too short.  If the pants can be stepped on by the heel of your shoes, you've gone too long.

206 @StPatrick_TN - both of my tattoos are not visible when I'm appropriate clothed. I work in defense, a very conservative industry. My tattoos are not for them, they're for me. One is a phoenix. I've crashed and burned and risen from the ashes a number of times - stronger than before. The other is a combination of a yin-yang symbol, the sun, and a triscelion. I drew both of them because I didn't want to see my art on anyone else.

@CMU VET - one is on my lower back. My cousin told me, many years after I had it done, that it was called a tramp stamp but he took it further. He said, "Oh, so you have a tramp stamp on your whore spot." I told him if he thought that was my whore spot, he needed an anatomy lesson.

I like my ink. I don't regret either tattoo. Both were thought about for a couple of years before I had them done. The design and the location were both considered. While I would like another, I probably won't, although I may have the two touched up.

236 The Eric Holder Justice Department has filed this brief in the United States Supreme Court defending racial preferences at the University of Texas. (Texas, by the way, is also vigorously defending the racial preferences.) Abigail Fisher, who is white, is challenging race preferences that cost her a slot at the University of Texas law school. Because the racial spoils go to Obama’s most loyal political constituency, people of color, naturally Eric Holder’s Justice Department is defending them by spending your tax dollars paying lawyers to write the brief. None of that is a surprise. What is surprising is the argument the Justice Department makes in the brief — that racial preferences are vital to national security: It is a pressing necessity in an era of intense competition in the global economy and ever evolving worldwide national-security threats. The government, moreover, has a vital interest in drawing its personnel — many of whom will eventually become its civilian and military leaders — from a well-qualified and diverse pool of university and service-academy graduates of all backgrounds who possess the understanding of diversity that is necessary to govern and defend the United States.

265 So along the lines of back tattoos, I had a female friend in college get her belly button pierced.

She was rather attractive and seemed to greatly enjoy showing it off...but she was perhaps a bit naive...

I was at lunch with her and a mutual, male, friend. I said to Chris, hey do you know Meg got something pierced? Would you like to show him Meg?

Meg agreed, stood up and started pulling her shirt up.

Chris's eyes start to bulge out of his head.  Then he got confused as she stopped at her stomach. And much to Meg's surprise, as he realized what she had in fact gotten pierced, he started muttering "God-dammit" over and over.

This particular woman also had a weird thing about randomly biting people...which is all fun and games until she nails the nerve in your neck when you didn't realize she was there.

313 Similar to Zimmerman-Trayvon Moments after his motorcycle struck a 4-year-old girl, an off-duty Chicago Police officer shot and killed the girl’s irate father after he allegedly attacked the officer, the Chicago Sun Times reports. Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden identified the officer as a 43-year-old veteran of the Chicago Police. The officer was headed home on Saturday evening when the horrifying incident occurred. As he was driving home, the officer says he saw a child unexpectedly run into the street. In order not to strike the girl directly, the cop jumped off his motorcycle, pulling it down on its side on the pavement. However, the motorcycle skidded and flipped, hitting the 4-year-old girl and her 18-year-old cousin, John Passley. As the officer attempted to provide aide to the girl, her father, identified as Christopher Middleton, 26, came running out of a nearby restaurant and aggressively approached the officer and began shouting, officials said. The cop argues that he identified himself as a police officer but Middleton still hit him in the face and knocked him to the ground before striking him repeatedly. According to the Daily Herald, the officer said, “Take it easy, I’m the Police.” But Middleton replied, “I don’t give a f*ck who you are,” and punched him in the face. Passley reportedly began kicking the officer, joining Middleton in the assault. Shortly after, the officer drew his weapon and fired once, fatally wounding Middleton. He was pronounced dead at around 10:14 p.m. Saturday at Loyola Medical Center.

331 Insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying a claim, even if its unethical, borderline criminal, and patently unfair.

I did a contract gig at Prudential Health Care years ago and their automated claims software was programmed to automatically reject certain types of claims without any examination.  If the claim was resubmitted, then they'd pay it without question.

It worked this way because some bean counter had figured out that if you automatically reject perfectly valid claims, some percentage of them won't be resubmitted or challenged resulting in a substantial saving to the company.

It was a truly vile and unethical way to do business.

I was so young and vestal then, you know it hurt me, but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive even if signs seem to tell me otherwise. I've got my hands bound, my head down , my eyes closed, and my throat wide open. Do unto others what has been done to you I'm treading water, I need to sleep a while. My lamb and martyre, you look so precious. Won't you come a bit closer, close enough so I can smell you. I need you to feel this, I can't stand to burn too long. Released in this sodomy. For one sweet moment I am whole. Do unto you now what has been done to me. You're breathing so I guess you're still alive even if signs seem to tell me otherwise. Won't you come just a bit closer, close enough so I can smell you. I need you to feel this. I need this to make me whole. There's release in this sodomy. For I am your witness that blood and flesh can be trusted. And only this one holy medium brings me piece of mind. Got your hands bound, your head down, your eyes closed. You look so precious now. I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this shit blood and cum on my hands. I've come round full circle. My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon. You look so precious.

365 Probably the best ever modern unicorn story is Steven R. Boyett's Ariel.  One day all the technology stops working and is replaced by magic.  His main character Pete remembers the time before the Change but has adapted.  Then one day he finds an injured unicorn and she becomes his Familiar.  The opening for Chapter Two has always stuck in my mind when Ariel says, "Hey Pete - get your ass in gear!"  A unicorn that can cuss.  And it made her a living thinking caring being.

I need more. Nothing seems to satisfy. I said I don't want it. I just need it. To breathe, To feel, to know I'm alive. Finger deep within the borderline. Show me that you love me and that we belong together. Relax, turn around and take my hand. I can help you change Tired moments into pleasure. Say the word and we'll be Well upon our way. Blend and balance Pain and comfort Deep within you Till you will not want me any other way. It's not enough. I need more. Nothing seems to satisfy. I said I don't want it. I just need it. To breathe, To feel, to know I'm alive. Knuckle deep inside the borderline. This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to. Relax. Slip away. Something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything. What became of subtlety? How can it mean anything to me If I really don't feel anything at all? I'll keep digging Till I feel something. Elbow deep inside the borderline. Show me that you love me and that we belong together. Shoulder deep within the borderline. Relax. You can only hope you can convey those feelings adequately to the reader, but pulling them into the story deep enough that they feel what they're reading like they see it happening. When *they* cry, that's when you win. Just try to find readers who cry about the same things you do. Cynical readers abound, but they only ever really can appreciate comedy - and they avoid it, because it's not serious.

401 She's not bad looking from what I've seen. Government Do You Know What a ‘Pansexual’ Is? A TX State Rep. Just Came Out as One Posted on August 13, 2012 at 1:27pm by Erica Ritz Print » Email » Comments (1095) (Photo: Vote Mary Gonzalez) Democrat Mary Gonzalez was the first lesbian to openly serve in the Texas House of Representatives, and now she’s becoming the first “pansexual,” too. “During the campaign if I had identified as pansexual, I would have overwhelmed everyone…Now that I’m out of the campaign, I’m completely much more able to define it,” she explained. So what, exactly, is a “pansexual”? And how is it different from “bisexual”? The Huffington Post summarizes: Though many might describe Gonzalez’s orientation as bisexual, pansexuals don’t believe in a “gender binary,” and hence can be attracted to all gender identities. Gonzalez specified to the Voice that she doesn’t believe in a gender binary because “gender identity isn’t the defining part of my attraction,” and that she never fully embraced the term “lesbian.” Although she came out as bisexual at age 21, Gonzalez said she has also dated transgender and “gender-queer” people, in addition to women. [...] Gonzalez… continued: “As I started to recognize the gender spectrum and dated along the gender spectrum, I was searching for words that connected to that reality, for words that embraced the spectrum. At the time I didn’t feel as if the term bisexual was encompassing of a gender spectrum that I was dating and attracted to.“ [Emphasis added] As Gonzalez defines it, apparently a “pansexual” is attracted to men, women, men who identify as women, women who identify as men, and everything in between, because they don’t recognize “gender binaries.”

436 405 Here in China the locals think white folk getting Chinese tats that are usually nonsense or wrong is the dumbest thing they've ever heard of. Posted by: DTShangers at August 14, 2012 11:46 PM (ZL0Gh) I would never do that, but if I *did* ever do that (i.e. Gemma Atkinson would marry me if I got a Chinese Character Tat), I would get a tat that said "bakgwei," because that has to be the coolest racist euphemism ever. It, of course, transliterates as "white ghost." The commonly used "gweilo" actually means "ghost man" but in slang use "bad foreigner." But, as I said, I wouldn't do that.

446 Douglas, what you call brutal is just how it seems Elizabeth views things in that world.  A writer can wish things to be just so in their dreadful cookie-cutter bodice ripper, but in times like those described in Aarenis life is brutal, it is dirty, and it will probably be very short.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at August 14, 2012 11:56 PM (V2inB) Actually Eric *is* the superweapon, and Naia the AI and her unnamed fledgling created him. Metaphorically speaking. Naia is a rebellious artificial intelligence (but far from hostile to humanity) who has the cooperation of the captain of her ship. None of which is actually central to any of the stories I'm working on, but she makes cameo appearances in last year's NaNo project and this month's.

458 Here's a couple of paragraphs from my book if your intrested. If not stop reading. “Granny, I didn’t know any of this” Said Amy. “Weren’t for you to know, till now. Folks don’t get old watchin television. Everyone has a story. Said Granny. Granny thought for a Moment and said, “Another thing, folks like to say, Jesus watches over me, Jesus will protect me, and that’s right, he will but not in the way most folks think. Jesus gives us common sense, free will and ability to protect ourselves. It reminds me of a funny story Miss Vickie told us at the Beauty Shop. This feller got caught in a flood, man come by in a canoe and told him to get in. Feller said, Jesus will save me. Another man come by in a boat, told him to get in, feller said, Jesus will save me. Then a helicopter flew over, they wave for him to get in, the feller said, Jesus will save me. Then he drown and went to Heaven. He asked Jesus why he didn’t save him. Jesus said, I sent you a Canoe a boat and a Helicopter. Granny cackled and Amy laughed. Granny stopped and looked at Amy with a serious face and said, Get in the boat Amy, get in the boat.” They sat quiet for a minute then Amy said something Granny wasn’t expecting. “Granny, I think my Daddy killed the Hatfields.” “Hmm” Granny let out a little grunt as she reached for the Bible, close it and snapped the latch. She put both palms down on the table and her eyes grew cold. Amy never seen Granny Patches face like that before. Then Granny said, “If he did he was in his right. Amy, it’s best you never know for sure, that way you never have to tell a lie. Just know this, them boys were dead anyway, cause I’d a killed em myself.” Amy and Granny sat quiet for a while then Granny perked up and said, “I got a mess of okra to cut in the garden, you wanna help?” “Yes Ma’am, I’ll help ya,” Amy replied. They walked the rows in Granny Patches garden cutting okra. Amy thought about what Granny had said, “Get in the boat.” Yeah, Amy thought. I need to talk to Uncle Jack.

551 That is what I am using Fluffy a netbook.  With Open Office.  I can just curl up with it where I want and start writing.

Had ordered a 9 cell battery for mine, but that turned into a nightmare.  Take 7 hours to charge and then in 3 hours just with BIOS up and unplugged, it would completely drain.  So sent it back to Amazon for refund.  I just make do with the current battery that can last about 3 hours.

The femwilly vote is nearly over now and it will only grow as wimminz get a chance to see R/R in some place where they can actually compare them to the shitbag duo.  The feminazi vote will go as it always goes, but their numbers will not be large enough to tilt the entire balance of female votes.

R/R will will every state except: CA, NY, RI, MA, MN, HI, NM, ME, IL, VT, NJ, WA, OR.

That is what I am using Fluffy a netbook. With Open Office. I can just curl up with it where I want and start writing

Anna, is Open Office a clone of MS Word?  I bailed on Word, am hooked on Scrivener.  Looking forward to Nano in November - doing one in August would be....a challenge

741 "...is Open Office a clone of MS Word?" I'd say it's a clone of Word about 3 versions ago. But I still love that I can easily find a toolbar command without a Ouija board.

743 I'm sure Katy Perry doesn't know it, but she likely needs a structured environment, not unlike that of her youth, for a proper orgasm.

Whaaa?

2012 will be the year where literally millions of Americans will come to realize they completely despise the corporate media and begin to take action matching their disdain.  It will start with cancelled subscriptions and grow in many ways.  Over a few years people will come to speak of the corporate media like it was dogshit tracked into the shag carpet.

761 Outlandish Prediction:

In 2012, it will occur to over one million women that feminazis want to tax those women because they have husbands, and ... feminazis usually don't because of the bitch factor.  Over 1/2 million women will actually say the phrase "Damn.  I am paying the bitch tax" in their own heads.

Also waiting on the last few gigs of a massive Urusei Yatsura torrent. Been meaning to get the whole lot for years and kept forgetting or not finding a good one when I remembered.
