Watch a Plane Crash From Inside the Cockpit

Don't worry - everyone survived and is recovering but this is still rough to watch.

Apparently a group was flying in Idaho and had their Gopro cameras running as they took off...and then crashed.

After flying up into the mountains for a morning hike in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness we were planning on flying to a small mountain town for dinner. Due to warming temperatures there was an increase in density altitude and we had a hard time getting adequate lift. After taking off we hit an air pocket that made us rapidly loose altitude, pushing us down into the trees.

Now I'm no pilot but I have skimmed a ground school course, stayed at a Holiday Inn right next to the airport that one time, and done a fair amount of Flight Simulator, so...when they were barely gaining altitude at the end of the runway, I would have been thinking about an abort.

And when they started approaching the tree line and weren't at least double the height of the trees, I would have maybe done a circle of the field until they had some altitude and speed.

But hey I'm just a caveman who can mostly pass for homo sapien - what the hell do I know about magical flying devices?

Oh and if you're wondering, the weird propeller effect is due to the rolling shutter on the digital camera.

The Entire Set of Milton Friedman's Free To Choose

Is now on YouTube. I happened to catch part of this series as a kid and it ended up having a major influence on my thinking. Everything Friedman pointed out - seemingly counter-intuitive at first - turned out to be obvious in retrospect.

Quote of the Day

Jonah G. on sooper-genius Joe Biden:

Yet another argument was that Biden would offer sage counsel on foreign affairs. This was an interesting theory given Biden's record. He opposed Reagan's defense buildup, hailed Mikhail Gorbachev's "pragmatic" leadership almost until the moment the Soviet Union disappeared, opposed the first Gulf War, supported the second - an interesting fact given the central role opposition to the war played in Obama's election - bragged about being the real author of the PATRIOT Act, and has always and everywhere claimed credit for successes whether he had anything to do with them or not (one notable exception: He opposed the operation to get bin Laden). "For all Biden's twaddle about doctrines and concepts," Andrew C. McCarthy wrote in National Review in 2008, "there is a simple technique for divining this foreign-policy solon's bobs and weaves: Consult the polls and the calendar."

Meet the Insta-Fort

Even the Roman army would be impressed by this:

The IDF is planning to purchase new mobile forts that can be erected independently by small military units and protect them during operations inside enemy territory.

Called Y-Fort, the new system was developed by Y-Fence, an Israeli company that is also involved in constructing the security barrier along Israel's border with Egypt.

The fort is built like a Lego set and consists of small mesh cubes that can be folded flat for easy transport and then open to hold around one ton of dirt.

The 1X1 meter cubes are then connected to one another to form a 40-meter fortress that can hold around 50 soldiers.

The fort can be built within four hours.

How To Track the Rich and Famous

If you know the callsign of their private plane, you can track them at openbarr.net - even if their flight plans are kept private by the FAA.

The Chicken Chronicles

Last night a long dormant neuron sputtered to life briefly and reminded of this movie that I happened to catch one late night in 1980 or so a wee wee lad. At the time I thought it was really funny and based on the trailer it probably is still decent. I believe this might have been Steve Gutenberg's first real movie role.

Meet Your New Japanese Gundam Sexbot Overlords

Okay this is an odd turn that I didn't quite see coming but in retrospect it was inevitable.

35 Well, I got a call from the Romney campaign, asking if I still wanted to be a poll watcher. I had given the local RNC office my name and number last April, right before the primary, and had sort of figured that I had been forgotten, but it looks like the machinery is working after all. My answer, of course, was yes, though being unemployed makes it hard to plan ahead. So, it looks like I will actually be doing my small part to end the SCOAMF's reign of misery instead of just hanging out on the interwebz being angry at him.

43 When you don't have enough runway in front of you, aborting isn't an option.  He likely didn't have enough room to turn around, and since turning increases load factor (and stall speed, consequently), he likely would have fallen straight out of the sky had he tried it.

The best option is to try to pick the best path in front of you and aim for spaces between the trees.

Here's the thing about flying airplanes, everyone on board is depending on you to save their ass, once they're strapped in they have no say in the matter. This guy in the video should be sitting in jail for the same amount of time as any drunk driver that killed someone. He's was lucky he didn't kill anyone.

98 >>>To me, it looked like the pilot had an incredibly long takeoff run, almost like he was overloaded. His takeoff run could have sufficed for a 727, he took off and lost altitude which should have been his clue. He didn't hit a downdraft that wrecked him he hit hot air. Which means his plane just had insufficient lift to fly through it. Yeah he was overloaded. In a classic scenario I heard at least 5 times while I was learning to fly. Fly to the mountains in the morning, it heats up, air thins out, suddenly flying out is beyond the performance of your plane. He should have aborted.

128 His takeoff run could have sufficed for a 727... He should have aborted. Posted by: MikeTheMoose Lite! 98% Anger Free! at August 15, 2012 11:11 PM Exactly. The takeoff run was painfully long; I expected the crash to be within seconds of getting off the ground. That takeoff run was longer than what I experienced last month on a 737-300. He's bouncin' all over the goat pasture and I'm all S.Jackson-like: "Rotate, MotherF'ckr. Do it"

137 69 "To me, it looked like the pilot had an incredibly long takeoff run, almost like he was overloaded. My butt was puckering before he left the ground." I'm no expert, but I've got a 1,000 hours in helicopters and I'll say I suspect the same, but add it was likely due to a failure in performance planning(applying forecast weather conditions to known power numbers). It's possible a downdraft was the final straw that broke the camels back...but departing without enough power to recover means they took off with little to no power margin(extra power above required takeoff power)whatsoever-evident by the lengthy takeoff. So in short, they were likely overloaded, and if they were, should have known it. When I fly I've got very handy quick reference charts to ensure this doesn't happen. They've saved my ass countless times, and possibly could have prevented a crash here. Now, don't get me wrong...I'm no expert and have made plenty of mistakes myself. I've just had a few really experienced guys next to me when I did...and a few times just got lucky.

He didn't crash the plane until he made the unrecoverable decision not to abort takeoff though he obviously couldn't fly. If you want to trace back his original mistake, it was not properly planning his trip. I'm sure the days temperatures were available; and the day before, since he was planning a morning trip, he should have run all his altitude performance metrics, and made his wind calcs, CG etc. If he would have done that it likely would have likely seen making the trip was a bad idea.

Commercial flying is safer than driving.  Private aviation is much more dangerous than driving, statistically.  I remember that some life insurers won't even insure private pilots, or they exclude deaths resulting from air accidents.

168 "When I was flying, the V-tail Beech Bonanza was know as the "doctor killer." It was notoriously difficult to handle in rough air."

It isn't difficult to handle. They got the name doctor killer in the late fifties because of the extraordinary amount of fatalities associated with them but it had nothing to do with the difficulty of flying the airplane. When the Bonanza came out the highest performing single engine airplanes were Cessna 190's, 195's, 180's, Howards, the Staggerwing Beech, etc., high powered but high drag airplanes. The Bonanza on the other hand was the first low drag airplane on the market, most pilots were unaware how fast they could pick up speed. This resulted in pilots getting situations, mostly IFR, where they lost control of speed and pulled the nose back to fast, thus over-stressing it and folding the tail in. There was nothing wrong with the airplane, it was just to much airplane for most pilots at the time.

Naa, at sea level he'd have been fine.   The difference in air density at sea level versus say even 5k MSL is palpable.   Above 10k they want pilots on Oxygen for any extended period the air is so thin.

Flying a parachute, I can feel the difference in density between sea level and 2k MSL.

No, the V-tail may exaggerate the yaw/pitch oscillation but it's nothing dangerous, it just takes a little getting used to. It's the fact the airplane can go from 150 knots to 200 knots in a heart beat if you aren't paying attention that gets people killed.

163 ... it's a little-known fact ...

Aircraft have a number of parameters. Among them are Empty Weight, Fuel Capacity, and Maximum Take-Off Weight.

The first 2 are known to a good degree of precision. And since the Fuel Capacoty is known, and the fuel is either hi-octane gasoline or jet fuel, depending on the engine(s), the maximum fuel weight can be calculated.

The Maximum Take-Off Weight, well, it's clearly a number that Should Be Believed, Always.  Altitude, ambient temperature and other things affect it, for example, at high altitude, where the air is thinner, and engines make less power, ...

In very many aircraft, carrying maximum fuel gives maximum range, but it also forces the plane to carry much less payload, to avoid going over the Maximum Take-Off weight. OTOH, Maximum Payload (however it is calculated;:will it fit, will it puncture the skin or deform the structure, etc.) reduces the fuel allowed.

The guys in the video seem to have miscalculated, as previously posted ... too much payload for the engine hp available at that particular time.

So they were not "topped off" with full fuel, they had burned off enough to get there. The pilot should have had a keener eye on the atmospherics and used his charts and checklists

My understanding is that it's a recommendation.  I haven't seen any changes to the 30 minute rule that sets in at 12,500' MSL.

On a different note, it wasn't just the fact that the Bonanza was a faster aircraft back in the day that caused all the accidents.  More than a few of them separated the tail and only after a period of retesting did Beech and the FAA realize that the tail structure needed to be beefed up (namely a bracing cuff at the leading edge of the stabilizer next to the fuselage).

265 Yea, a 195 is pretty old.  I think there's only 3 with that upgraded engine configuration airworthy anymore.   A few more of the stock engine ones around.  The one I flew a lot in was 1949 vintage.

266 Cicero, losing the tail can cost you a dogfight and your life.

I remember stumbling across some of the safety directives for P-51 Mustangs.  The B/Cs were suffering complete tail plane failure with resultant loss of pilot and plane.  It was finally tracked down to the fuselage fuel tank.  When that tank, which was first fitted with the Merlin Mustangs to give them more range, had more than half a load of fuel, the CG was shifted too far back and if the pilot tried any abrupt maneuver the plane would porpoise and sometimes rip the tail off.  So the rule became to use the fuselage tank first, then the drop tanks, and then fight and return on the wing tanks.

With the exception of the (easily fabricated in theater) steel overhead, it's nothing but stacked 4' and 8' Hescos, both of which I've either seen or done. Which is not to take away from the idea! I spent four months building Hesco bunkers AROUND CHUs (think shipping containers with a window, outlet, and an air conditioner crammed with Soldiers or Marines), while this plus the addition of some extension cords and a genny could have saved everyone a lot of time and money

I have the consumer preview release of Windows 8 as a VM on my mac.

I really don't know what all the bitching is about.

It boots and shuts down faster than any version of windows I have ever run.

It is different in a lot of ways but, c'mon how long have we been using computers?

So what they put things in different places and created a fancy wizbang interface, people can learn, they will adapt

You can switch to a more traditional windows view by hitting the windows key on the keyboard.

"Metro" Applications can be run on the metro screen.

It is pretty interesting.

When the full version comes out, I will definetly run it as a VM alongside Windows 7 on my mac.

No the tail didn't need to be beefed up, they made an effort to pretend they beefed it up because after thirty years people were still exceeding the speed envelope and setting up flutter and folding the tail in.
The A.D. addresses keeping the ruddervater in balance and 5/32 control cables to prevent flutter. The stabilizer reinforcement is nothing but a decoration to show they did something, that ain't holding nothing together.

I will not, absolutely not be using it.

Yes, but that is the whole point to what they are doing.

They are going in the same direction as mac in bridging all of their devices.

So that's why you get the metro interface, it's evolution.

I've used every single windows os, their best OS was Win2k and then XP service pack 2.

I wouldn't even use windows if it weren't for AutoCad, MS Project and Visio.

If you use windows your going to have to switch to it sooner or later, or you could just buy a mac and install and run it native when you need to or as VM in coherence and get the best of both worlds.

294 requires you to take extra steps at different locations to accomplish something in one step in a logical location on the present OS.

The corporate customers will demand a more conventional approach be available.  There's still enough of them that MS will be compelled to heed their wishes and/or keep the current license "downgrade" policy in place.  Apple largely doesn't give a crap about the corporate market, so they can get away with marketing to the unwashed masses who need a lot of hand holding.

The Metro/Silverlight controls model is a good one for a lot of low/medium complexity custom inhouse apps.  It relieves the developers of a lot of tedious UI organizational work that can burn time by the cubic fuckton.

He's pretty much unlistenable anymore.  I can't stand the commercials on talk radio anymore anyways.

Posted by: Joe at August 15, 2012 08:38 PM (+/VIS)

297 Exactly. If you're going to do anything but fart around with your computer, you need an operating system that's serious and works well in an office. Windows 8 does not. There's an enormous difference between what you do with a PC and what you do with a tablet, and Microsoft seems to have forgotten that - or doesn't want it to be true. Mac, sure, its basically a glorified tablet to begin with. But a PC is a work machine that can also do games and internet and whatever else you demand from it.
This OS is unserious, foolish, and lazy. It deserves to die harder than Vista and Windows ME.

298 I was just following along with some of Obama's recent attacks how Romney/Ryan just wanna make the rich people richer. Their sole motivation is apparently being evil. I get the sense that many liberals imagine Romney swimming around in his money bin filled with gold coins. They appear to lack the most basic understanding of economics and how money works. Which I guess makes sense, since they think we can spend ourselves out of debt and into prosperity.

301 I never liked Savage or O'Reilly. Savage is a hack, he's a poser whose show always consisted of loud music, deliberately provocative questions and annoying callers. O'Reilly was a populist who leaned someone rightward for a moderate, whose show consisted of picking a position then not studying it and talking over people when they pointed out he's wrong.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at August 15, 2012 08:42 PM (r4wIV)

302 @295

They will have that.

I am running Win8 right now, you hit the windows key, boom your in what looks like the familiar windows desktop sans the start bar.

You have My Computer and all the rest you have become familiar with.

What will be essential is for MS to make a corporate version that will default to the familiar.

The also have to take out some of the cutesy crap like having to lift the wallpaper that hides the login screen.

But I can see corporate customers liking the metro screen and being able to tailor it to their particular needs.

I think it's a compelling and bold move by MS.

I view it as a transitional thing, not an endgame.  A UI is just fluff and easily replaced (ex Android is just a new UI on top of a stripped Linux kernel).  The heavy lifting would be under the covers in making the kernel/services less interdependent and more modular than the traditional NT code base.

Yes, but Microsoft is just following Apples lead.

They are trying to unify the experience across their appliances the same as Apples is doing.

IOS features and functionality are creeping into Mac OS every release.

I fully expect future releases of IOS and Mac OS to be virtually indistinguishable.

Microsoft is late to the game and is in a tough spot because of it's position as the primary corporate and home desktop OS.

It's tough to be innovative when you have people who complain when you move a stinking button over here and bury a function one level down from where it was the last version.

I think MS is being bold and hopefully it pays off.

Ironically, I think it is ergonomics and user interface that is driving it more then processing power.

If I am going to go serious work I want two monitors (I could probably use 4 really), a keyboard, mouse, and maybe a headset.

And if I've got all that stuff, it doesn't matter if the actual computer is in a desktop or laptop or phone. So you might as well stick everything into the most convenient and efficient unit...which is a desktop.

Following the lead of another company (especially a rival, even if its only 10% of the market share or so) is not innovation, no matter how you paint it.

348 My personal macs are all holding out at Snow Leopard, but I got my wife an Air that shipped with Lion, and it always annoys me when I use it because there are a lot of pointless changes brought by Lion, especially if you use a lot of gestures and esoteric shortcuts. And the stupid touch scroll is backwards in Lion to ape tablet behavior.  I'm hoping there is a "classic OSX" mode hidden somewhere that I just haven't uncovered.

"O'Reilly was a populist who leaned someone rightward for a moderate, whose show consisted of picking a position then not studying it and talking over people when they pointed out he's wrong."

Well I agree with the "populist" part. If you want to know what O'Reilly's going to say about something, just take a poll, and that'll tell you most of the time. That's undoubtedly why he's #1.

Beyond that, he's got a bit of a dictator and "royal we" thing going on. Shades of his days as a teacher, I suppose.

But what I noticed about O'Reilly - vs Hannity, especially - is that when he has guests on, he really let's them have their say, and really does simply insist that they stick to the point. A lot of times he'll have no decent argument in opposition, and just say "I disagree anyway", but the opposing view does get a legitimate airing.

Hannity, in contrast, will invite someone on to talk about something, then cut them off about it, insisting that they submit to being cross-examined about ad hominums that are tangential to the issue.

I remember in 2005 or so when there was an analysis of the relative wealth of the EU and the US, and average EU-nik came in at about equal to the average Mississippian (47th in the US).

Europe is poor, at least compared to the US, which is indeed the reason they are "less materialistic". Basically in Europe the liberal elites don't let the plebes have the lifestyle average Americans enjoy.

Gratuitous version incompatibilities really piss me off.  Seriously, what does say...a browser do that couldn't be done with the core Win32 API that appeared in NT 3.1?   Not a fucking thing, that's what.

I can understand moving to a newer toolset for TTM reasons, that was the whole reason behind the first stone knives/bear skins MFC releases, and introduction of various common controls and such...to leverage more existing code.

People are introducing gratuitous version incompatibilities for retard reasons now though.  Maybe its because they don't want the testing impact of supporting a few OS versions?

Perhaps you're unaware but the footprint for Windows has been getting smaller. They've made a big effort in reducing the amount of unique info needed by each device driver. This was driven by an expectation that SSDs will become common as the boot and primary operating volume. It's especially critical for the mobile market and ultralite tablet and notebook market where optical drives have already been relegated to external device you only attach as needed.

Yeah, I was pretty skeptical of the body language girl (who IS kind of cute, sort of), but she doesn't overdo it and it seems like some of it has merit. Most notably, she doesn't seem to suck up to O'Reilly especially, when she analyzes him. She doesn't criticize him, but she doesn't really criticize anybody else, either. For the most part she's telling you what you can already sense, anyway. So it's not so bad if you don't expect too much, or take it too seriously.

378 Like security updates. Wanna reboot now? How bout now? How about now? How about now?

That's so the ring 0 system loader and memory management can be kept (relatively) simple.  It is possible to replace kernel and driver code on the fly, the big iron S/370 architectures do it all the time without full system reboots, but you need a system that's architected from the ground up with that as a capability.   Rebooting a mainframe with thousands of users/task running is a costly/painful experience.  Rebooting some COTS PC not so much.

Of course, I've also crashed Macs, Solaris, and Linux systems (which in non-administrator account). My main problem with Windows 7 is the inability to drag a folder to the side of the screen to dock it. I used it all the time for dozens of programs I use. Aside from that, I can generally get it to feel and act like Windows XP... though forcing that machine to let me access all the guts of the program files, application data, &c. is a pain... especially when you are transfering game save info, browser configurations, and e-mail (I still use ye olde Eudora). Oh well, at least I can make my 64-bit machine run programs originally written on punch-cards. The backwards compatibility is one of the nice things about Windows.

It isn't. You just aren't aware of the times when it runs. The high-end third party defraggers did this for quite a long time but Microsoft has long been constrained from improvements that could be perceived as putting third party utility makers out of business. (Remember when we used to pay for a defragger, not just a better one?)

This is why they got rid of the elaborate display we associated with defragging before Vista. Properly implemented, defragging is something that happens without the user needing to know. Even the drive where all of my torrenting activity, something almost tailor made to induce fragmentation if you don't pre-allocate disc space, doesn't need manual defragging under Win7. It used to be a monthly ritual on the predecessor XP system.

That's because drives are larger and W7 is scattering shit all over the drive because it can.  Its not "fragmented" per se, but its physical locality to other files isn't that hot.

Machines with more memory mean the page file isn't growing incrementally as fast as it did in years past too.

My Core 2 Duo machine that was first built for Vista testing, and went through every Windows version since, gave me all kinds of trouble when I switched to 64-bit. It turned out Intel had a major bug in the BIOS and updating that fixed everything. Since then I haven't had a BSOD that wasn't a hardware failure.

On Windows 7, drag a folder to the task bar and pin it to Explorer. (Not IE.) This adds it to the jump list and gives you easy right-click access.

" 372 "...I think Biden off the Democratic Party ticket is a push, my guess is Palin is trying to end run any attempt to do so by making it seem like they're doing her bidding if they dump him now."

I'm not sure what you mean by "a push", but it seems like Obama could do a lot better with a different running mate, and the Democratic Party in general would benefit from an obvious successor (they wouldn't really consider Joe, right??).

I presume it's Obama's call, and this may be where his unbridled narcissism becomes our advantage. First of all, he might not want a "real" candidate, because they would make him look like the empty suit he really is, in comparison. Secondly, he might feel that it would be an admission of having made a mistake.

If Palin is suggesting a change in the hopes that they won't - just to show they're not going to follow anything she would suggest - that might sound really silly, but it's actually brilliant. Because Obama and his goons REALLY ARE that small and petty.

But another reason they may keep Biden is because they may be beholden to his network of contacts. I'm totally speculating, but ol' Joe has been around a very, very, very long time, whereas Obama is still the new kid in town.

405 Here's what I mean by a push:
If Obama dumps Biden, it means the choice sucked and is hurting them. Losing your VP candidate (especially this late) means you are doing badly and admitting you're panicked. It looks like poor leadership and worry, not confidence and strength. And while Biden leaving means you don't have uncle nutjar out making an ass of himself all the time, that's not a real big gain. Biden is as loopy as he's ever been but it didn't hurt Obama at all last time around.
I think people seriously overestimate the value of a vice presidential candidate, and the damage it can do, but maybe I'm off base.
I just don't see it helping more than it hurts, or hurting more than it helps.
And I just don't get this fear of Hillary. She looks awful, sounds like a screeching harpy, has done a terrible job as Secretary of State, and she's frankly disliked by a large number of people in the country, particularly women over the age of 30.
Plus, I'm pretty sure the Clinton camp despises Obama. I am confident that Bill Clinton actually likes Romney, as they aren't all that terribly far apart on most policy issues anyway.

I was also talking about drive space. What do you think the majority of a Windows install is besides drivers?

The driver set shipped with Windows has grown substantially with each generation. But disc capacity per dollar has grown far, far faster. It wasn't until Windows 2000 that putting all of the drivers and other files on the hard drive became standard, because the convenience finally outweighed the concern for space issues. (Remember when copying over all of the CABs was part of the install ritual?) And that is when 40 GB drives were considered big. The percentage of a typical hard drive a Windows install consumed shrank a great deal while including more.

As I mentioned, expectation of SSDs taking over has made this a long term priority. There are a number of other good reasons for standardizing large portions of common device drivers. This has been in the works for a long time. I attended a WinHEC session back in 2007 devoted to the subject.

Yeah, I can remember fun games on my Atari 800 that fit on a 16 KB cartridge. Now a single texture in an Android game is much larger than that. The world has moved on. I spent several years of the 80s in the game business and it was always a big hassle trying to figure out new tricks to reduce a game's size without ruining it.

We went through a huge hassle trying to get 'Defender of the Crown' to fit on two floppies for the Atari ST version. The problem was that while the version was somewhat smaller on the art size than the Amiga version, the ST only supporting 16 colors from a palette of 512 where the Amiga offered 32 from a range of 4096, the Amiga has double-side discs as standard holding 880 KB each. The Atari ST had both single-sided and double-sided drives (using essentially the MS-DOS format) storing 360 and 720 KB respectively. You couldn't ignore all of those single-sided drives sold in the more price sensitive markets like the UK. But having another floppy in the package meant a significant dent in margins.

We (really meaning Randy Platt, who sold Orson Scott Card his first computer before turning pro game programmer) ultimately implemented a homegrown version of ZIP, which was still under very pricy licensing terms, and decompressed a lot of stuff in RAM, where the ST had the advantage over the Amiga in most cases. (The base Amiga 1000 shipped with 256 KB RAM but Atari produced so few STs with less than 512 KB we felt safe in ignoring them.) It added a significant delay tot he start of gameplay but the product was a success.

426 "Yeah, I can remember fun games on my Atari 800 that fit on a 16 KB cartridge. Now a single texture in an Android game is much larger than that. The world has moved on."
And are the games better? I mean they look prettier but are they BETTER games? Because they have gotten insanely huger but the game play is either the same or actually worse. I had more fun playing worms on my PC in 1997 than I do playing Diablo III now.

There are some very specific areas they could branch into that would make me happy but they seem to be actively avoiding it for some reason. This is one of the reasons I have Atlantis, even though Word 2010 is hugely preferable for the bulk of the work. I only use Atlantis at the later stages but could live in it if I had to. It's one of the more obscure WP apps out but has been around forever.

It has one huge glaring deficit in its lack of tables. The company has been promising tables for over a decade. Yuo can actually look on their forums and finds messages where they promise it was 'coming soon.'

I suspect the whole operation is just one guy with maybe some part-time help. The book functionality is the big selling point for me and I wish he would expand more in that direction. Right now, it still lacks some vital functions that I perform in Sigil. I've suggested that the e-book area is his one real shot at a growth market but it's a complete unknown what is really happening with that operation.

@406

All very well put, and well reasoned.

One could reasonably change a VP, simply because of changing political needs, and that sort of thing used to be done (but not in my lifetime), but it is kind of late in the game, and the independent voters would be asking themselves, "Why? What's wrong?" and "Who is this person?" I DID throw out the idea that this could be helpful as a distraction from the economy for a while, but it does seem like it would be a net negative.

Unless it was a big name! But what name would be big enough? Really only Hillary, but - as you say - "She looks awful" (nobody seemed to care about the "screechy" stuff, or the "being the first 1st lady with her own scandal" stuff, doesn't qualify you to run much of anything. They DO despise the Obamas, but I still haven't figured out why the hell she's Sec State anyway.

"I think people seriously overestimate the value of a vice presidential candidate, and the damage it can do, but maybe I'm off base."

That's usually true, but a unique individual can make a difference. Palin bumped up McCain's ticket right up until the economic meltdown. Ryan might make the difference in WI, in a purple state where Republicans have been energized in recent years to stand up and say "Enough!" to the abuses of creeping socialism. 10 EVs one way instead of the other could make all the difference. Ryan can also make a significant difference in raising awareness regarding the daunting financial disaster that is in progress, because he's such an expert in it. In a close race, it doesn't take much to win or lose.

Oh, and they say he's excellent at gathering campaign donations, too. That can make the kind of difference that you'll never really be able to know.

444 decompressed a lot of stuff in RAM

Sophisticated swappers/paging systems do this kind of thing.  A lot of pages scheduled for page out are in fact quite sparse and can be regenerated from a small compressed local cache more rapidly than doing a media I/O.  A clever system uses idle time to perform this kind of trickery.  If you get around to doing it, its a win, if not you just take the usual path and do the physical I/O

447 There have been exactly 5 vice presidents who took office by election after their predecessor served a final term: John Adams Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, Richard Nixon and George H, W, Bush. Of those, Nixon had 2 presidents between taking office after Eisenhower, and 3 were before 1900.
Being VP just isn't a realistic step to becoming president. So Hillary becoming a VP candidate doesn't mean she gets to be president. It means she gets to be a do-nothing funeral visitor to a man she probably can't stand. Its a no-power job with no real public appeal.

452 Bruce Meadows Airport U63. Elevation: 6370 ft, On a warm day that could easily translate to a density altitude of 10,000 ft or more. Hazard listed as "200 FT TIMBERED RIDGE AT 2000 FT ON CNTRLN". Those trees are on a rising slope. The plane just didn't have enough climb rate to clear them. A man has to know his limitations, and a pilot needs to know the limits of his airplane's performance. There appears to be slightly lower terrain off to the right, but he never had enough altitude to really maneuver. He should never have tried to take off. He should have aborted while still on the runway. He would probably have been better off ditching in the swampy meadow off the end of the runway, rather than crashing in the trees. 20/20 hindsight can always find a better course of action.

Of those, Nixon had 2 presidents between taking office after Eisenhower, and 3 were before 1900.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at August 16, 2012 02:12 AM (r4wIV)

If you want to get technical, Adams and Jefferson were in opposite parties and ran against each other twice so really just four.  Or three if you just count elections after the passage ot the 12th Amendment.

Honestly, yes. They have gotten hugely better. Only a minority of developers make the best use of the immense resource now at their command but that was always the case. Sturgeon's Law.

We used to play a conceptual game with a storied history: How would you implement game X on platform Y and what would it look like? You may have seen the recent Atari VCS-ish version of Super Mario Bros.

It's little different from making movies. A movie director today has amazing capabilities available to him compared to earlier generations or even that same person working tens years earlier. (The lead software guy for ILM on Terminator 2 remarked that once the production was complete he could do the same thing for a fraction of the cost and a fifth of the time. The former due to the software development costs and the latter due to how much better the available hardware had gotten since the production began.)

Peter Jackson was a good choice for LOTR not just because he was very good at working with the technology but because he had the right vision. Given a decent budget he would have mad good versions twenty years earlier. They would be a bit different and some of the effects might not age well.

Some creators blow their wad on stupid flashiness but others instead use the ease of doing things that used to be terribly hard to focus on the non-technical stuff that is just as hard. Some of the stuff people used to sweat blood to squeeze out of old machines is trivial today. But which games are remembered? The ones that were solely notable for their technical achievement or those that were good games supported by good coding?

"Being VP just isn't a realistic step to becoming president. So Hillary becoming a VP candidate doesn't mean she gets to be president. It means she gets to be a do-nothing funeral visitor to a man she probably can't stand. Its a no-power job with no real public appeal."

Fair enough, but let's look at it again. In the last 32 years, we had Reagan succeeded by his VP, Bush41. After he was defeated, Clinton had Gore as his VP, and who was at the top of the Dem ticket? The VP. Who was he defeated by? Somebody closely associated with a past president. Cheney was great, but if they had a viable successor instead, things might have gone better last time.

Being the VP can be a nothing job, most of the time, but it gives you name recogniion, and "national stature". Ironically, Cheney elevated the stature of the office, because Bush43 put him to work. Historically, the job was a joke, and nobody even could tell you who the VP was, but these days it puts you first on teh short list.

"... Who knows, I'm often wrong. The world used to make a lot more sense to me in the past."

Oh, you are SO not kidding!!

None of that was really an option on a 512K Atari ST running the original single-taking TOS. It was a simple RAM disk arrangement. Doing a big  bunch of decompression to that at the beginning was the best alternative to having a game that took time out for decompressing files constantly.

I really like 64-bit and never want to go back for desktop purposes.

Posted by: epobirs at August 15, 2012 10:39 PM (kcfmt)

486 Cheney was a huge throwback, more like the VP back in the days of Washington and Jefferson. He was much more than just a guy to sit on the bench in case the unthinkable happened, but really nobody has been like that for centuries. President Bush the younger really broke the mold for that.
Being the VP always put you on the short list though. It just didn't turn into anything except a very small handful of times, and most of them before 1850. It seems like it really ought to set you up for the presidency, but it doesn't really. If it wasn't for dead presidents we'd almost NEVER have a VP take the office. Five out of 44 is pretty bad odds.

If you're still up, "lou's a girl", I really wouldn't be concerned about them taking Palin up on any good ideas. If anything, I really think they really would tend to reject an idea JUST BECAUSE she had suggested it.

As to Hillary running, there's all kinds of talk about her & Bill longing for the Oval Office, but I just don't see her "walking the walk" for that right now. Maybe she just wants to see that asshole fail, and get ready for next time around.

They might benefit greatly from having her on the ticket, but they could have last time, too, and they didn't. Unlike the Clintons, they seem to do things for personal, rather than pragmatic reasons, and perhaps that will (finally) be their undoing.

491 The way the Kos Kids are reacting is surprising to me, maybe Palin is working a serious Jedi mind trick on the idiots.
Someone brought this up a few threads back this morning but have you seen Hillary lately? She barely combs her hair. They suggested she's just given up, she seems to be three sheets to the wind most of the time and looks godawful. Maybe she's just decided none of it matters, certainly the Obama administration barely pays any attention to cabinet level people (prefering czars and advisor types).
I wonder if she's just realized she's not as great and smart as she always believed, that the Secretary of State job is beyond her, and that the people she speaks to despise her.

507 The first Presidential election to include neither the incumbent President nor the incumbent Vice President on a major party ticket since 1952 came in 2008 when President George W. Bush had already served two terms and Vice President Cheney chose not to run." So 2008 was actually quite the anomaly in the last 60 years. Posted by: Optimizer at August 16, 2012 02:58 AM (As94z) IIRC, Truman's Veep ran for the nomination, but didn't get it. So to get an election where neither a President or Vice-President ran for election/re-election, you'd have to go back to 1928. Then, you'd have to go back to 1920, and therebefore to 1884.

He ran on a cult of personality in 2008 just how he wanted it, and he's running on class warfare and bitter anger at being questioned this time around. For this guy to fire Biden would mean he was wrong all this time, that he showed poor judgment and Nothing about the man's pathology fits making a decision like that.
Maybe Valerie Jarrett can get him to do it but I honestly doubt they'd even think of it. The more the GOP says "what a bozo" the more the probably like him.

One koskiddie thought the only reason the MSM was making a stink about Obama going so negative (cancer ad) was because, get this, Obama has the election in the bag by such a large margin that the MSM needs the race to be closer or their ratings will suck.  So, the MSM is trying to manufacture something bad about Obama to give Romney a fighting chance, to help their ratings.  The poster was dead serious, unless of course that was one of us doing what I'm contemplating.

547 Actually my Dad is doing really well, considering. He can't go running any more, which is driving him a bit stir crazy, but he still walks about two miles a day even with his right leg dragging a bit. He is also getting his right hand back slowly, and I think it will do better once he gets the swelling down. Not too bad for an 83 year old mountain runner. I think they would not have treated him so aggressively if he wasn't in such good shape. They aren't the least concerned about his prostate cancer, either. That sounds bad, but anymore, hardly so.

Now, if I could just get my mom to back off and quit pestering him, he would probably be well on the mend. Probably never be a mountain runner again, but he could probably do a few 5ks and such.

sadly, I find that we have had productivity losses with upgrades.  a lot of software makers just scramble their menus and sell us programs we already own -- but now are slower cuz we can't find the damn commands.

other programs have become so complex in the quest for extended capability that they are practical unexplainable to novices.

570 #561 Depends on how you measure such things. It may play badly politically but I know of several situations where positions were eliminated because newer, better technology enabled ordinary employees to accomplish things that were once specialist tasks. When I was a kid it was normal for a big office to have an army of secretarial school grads just to produce all of the documents needed daily. Nowadays you have to be fairly high ranking to need or want such a person. My sister had a typesetting business in the early 80s. Stuff that took her a week using her leased CompuGraphic gear ($20K more if you wanted the WYSIWYG display option) she can now whip out in a couple hours. Though she doesn't do it full time anymore, as running the accounting (and much more) side of my BIL's company is her primary work. We so easily forget how hard some stuff once was, or the things we now do that simply didn't exist for individuals just a few years ago. Look at some of these videos: http://tinyurl.com/8ukxwon Then think back, if you go back that far, to how hard it was to create a GUI app in the early days of the Mac or Windows. Then try to claim we haven't had any productivity gains.

Posted by: epobirs at August 16, 2012 12:07 AM (kcfmt)

571 If you "shop around," you can put together a suite of relatively tiny, fast apps for most tasks. Lightweight apps, portable apps, etc. You can turn off a lot of services to speed Windows up, or run a light interface or CLI for Linux. Most people don't because they either don't know or want the bells and whistles. If you really focus on your task, don't let yourself be distracted, and stay coordinated, you can get an enormous amount of work done. Especially if what you're doing depends on computing horsepower, which doesn't match most user tasks. Most software could be more efficient, but so could people. Most of what I do waits on me, not the computer's horsepower (except games).

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 16, 2012 12:08 AM (bxiXv)

572 jc: Thank you. That's my point. The point is, we're trying to do business. These are supposed to be business systems. Since processors speed stopped increasing, and since most software doesn't utilize multi-core processing, anything beyond dual cores doesn't help much. Some older processors if combined with new boards, might acually be faster. We've flatlined for the last three years at least.

577 epobirs: No argument. But almost none of that has anything to do with hardware past the 486 level. There's a 20 year gap between when a solution is introduced to full adoption improving things, depending upon the industry. The medical industry is even slower.

581 #567 Sturgeon's Law, once again. But plenty of people simply cannot deal with change. Look at the Ribbon hate. If I had to train newbies on Office type apps I'd far prefer it be the newer versions. The amount of digging for an obscure command has been greatly reduced. There is still improvements to be made, some of which can be seen in the 2013 preview but it never comes fast enough compared tot he furious rate at which those apps gained capabilities in the 90s and completely overwhelmed to UI designers. They're still catching up. There have been some experiments in apps that only expose a small subset of their features and open up more as the user demonstrates proficiency. But there has always been a big ego problem with these concepts. People who regard themselves as power users want to see every possible thing they can do, even if it only serves to keep them from actually doing anything. I'm blanking on the name but Kai Krause in the 90s had a graphics app that was an example of this. It awarded stars as you showed proficiency and each exposed more menu items. Another current example is Vuze, which is mainly used as a BitTorrent client. It's menus have three levels. Most people don't need to see anything in the two upper levels and can do a lot of damage if they don't use the setting correctly.

582 #579 The medical industry has a good reason: they might kill people. Interestingly, the military has the exact opposite reason for not jumping on every seeming new advance at the first offer: they might fail to kill people. You have to have goals.

585 #579 I would greatly disagree. It isn't about the core functions which haven't changed much in all that time. It's about all of the stuff surrounding that that makes the coders able to include more stuff that deals with problems sooner than later. I can fire up my old NEC Versa 486 laptop and write in AmiPro (later known as Lotus Write) but a lot of stuff I take for granted in modern systems would be painfully missing. Much of the formatting would take hours for stuff I set up in a few minutes and reuse. So much of the changes aren't about sheer processing power. It's about poverty. When we up the base line specs for what we code to, it can mean allowing some techniques that are wasteful because the optimization is worth less than fast delivery in many case. But it also means not worrying about whether we can keep this or that item because of drive space or RAM. It may not seem like much has changed in twenty years but I think it's far too easy to forget what used to be hard just because it got done at all. I would not want to go back to the best that was available in 1992, other than firing up an old SNES game in an emulator.

That's because most so called productivity apps are human or external bandwidth bound.  Its been this way since around the appearance of the 486DX2-66 and first generation Pentium chips.

and as a gamer, a CPU still isn't used as effective as it could. Only things that really use it is something like Space Engine which isn't a game (and uses more ram than anything) and ArmA 2 and that more because the ArmA engines frankly suck (more noticeable when you're in a massive multiplayer game as the CPU chugs on all the math)

Posted by: The Dude at August 16, 2012 02:00 AM (tw6Ar)

601 I'm at a complete loss to explain it.

She probably believes, perhaps correctly, the learning curve on something newer simply isn't worth the effort.  If what you have does everything you want/need to do, there's no compelling reason to move.

Some of the older stuff is blistering fast on the newer hardware too.

Posted by: @PurpAv at August 16, 2012 02:00 AM (/RS2M)

603 and as a gamer, a CPU still isn't used as effective as it could.

I think TTM issues probably keep the game writers from really bothering to tweak up the code.   Their customers will buy newer/faster hardware if they say they need it.

As a stable core code base develops over a few years, it can pay to start performance tweaking it, but if you're still in chaos mode, performance work other than at the architectural level is usually unwise.

There's exception of course, like when something is an unacceptably slow POS and launch date is looming.  Then you gotta do some nasty low level turd polishing because its too late for higher level optimizations.

605 #603 It's an early Windows word processor. The learning curve for a more recent WP app would have been roughly nil. She has never been able to demonstrate what it is that is so appealing about it, especially since I used to use it too, way back when. It isn't as though anything else in her systems is a museum piece. My BIL used to remark that he never had to drop a penny on jewelry, so long as she could spend at least five grand a year on new technology for the business and household. OTOH, he would still be watching a 19" tube TV in a semi-furnished house if left to his own devices. But the surrounding landscape design would be magnificent because that is his profession. He needed to marry my sister to be forced to enjoy his own success.

617 This is a harrowing live video of a small plane crash in which there were no survivors. The videotape was found in the wreckage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzDSq6m2zV4&feature=related I don't remember where I first found this; it was probably here.

618 Denser tree-line and those guys are having coffee with St. Peter.

101 is to check the weather conditions as they apply to the local environment and basic precepts of flight like, umm, I don't know- lift?

You are absolutely correct. Even if you do takeoff, after assessing the weather, have a plan to say- "gee, I might not get adequate lift in this weather environment. If at the end of the runway conditions are suspect- the camping trip is off." Especially with a aircraft whose power can not compensate for those adverse conditions.

Better to be disappointed and live another day. Lucky they had angels on their shoulders to miss those trees until the speed decreased.

619 Late to the dance but...  Weather was a minor factor in that crash really.  Clearly that plane was overloaded with 4 guys and all that gear.  Looks like an older Aeronca Chief which would struggle with just 2 souls and gear.  He should never have attempted take-off with such a load in the first place.

620 Wow! Okay, I hadn't seen more than the video on Fox News. Didn't realize he had that much time and space to figure it out. Once he got out of ground effect and couldn't climb, he should have set it back down.

621 There are several runways in the Rockies that are built at elevations which are at or exceed the alititude limitations of prop planes in summer temperatures.

622 Not a pilot (but an aircraft enthusiast since I was a kid) but, looking at the "back seat view" video out the side window... Doesn't look to me like his flaps were down.

The point of flaps being to generate additional lift, especially during takeoff and landing where airspeed is too low to generate enough lift.

Anyone with 1:1-scale piloty experience see the same thing from that shot? or is the wide-angle lens distorting the view too much?

623 As a former pilot (not current for economic reasons), I was astounded at length of time it took to clear the ground. YES, it was probably overloaded. My guess is that the pilot had taken off overloaded before, so this ground roll wasn't different enough from previous ones for him to realize his problem.

624 If anyone is still looking at this thread, a few more thoughts. The airplane does appear to be a Stinson Voyager/Station Wagon, as someone mentioned earlier. Performance is comparable to a Cessna 172. Standard engine was a six cylinder Franklin of either 150hp or 165hp. It will fly with all four seats filled as long as the passengers are not too fat. It doesn't have much left over for carrying baggage and altitude performance with a full load is not great. One notch of flaps might have helped the takeoff. Anything more would have been a bad idea on takeoff, but is useful for landing. Another important factor in maximum climb performance is choosing the proper climb speed. Either too fast or too slow will reduce climb performance. Pilots get in the habit of climbing at a higher speed than max rate of climb. That works at lower altitudes where there is climb performance to spare. What the pilot needed in this situation would have been max angle of climb speed which is generally a bit slower even than max rate of climb. Pilots who live in the Midwest rarely get that type of aircraft above 3,000 to 4,000 feet and may not realize how to get maximum performance out of the plane at higher altitude. Those guys are lucky to be alive. Luck is not something one should rely on in aviation.
