A WSJ Book Review: "Better Off Without 'Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession"
Travel writer and former Maxim editor, Chuck Thompson, really, really does not like the South (or even states that are just a little too adjacent to it). A better title for his book would be 'Rednecks in the Mist: Those Horrible Horrible People'.
Here is part of Barton Swaim's rather scathing review in the WSJ:
On the first page, the author wonders why the American electoral system must be "held hostage by a coalition of bought-and-paid-for political swamp scum from the most uneducated, morbidly obese, racist, morally indigent, xenophobic, socially stunted, and generally ass-backwards part of the country." You expect him to let up, to turn the argument around, to look at the other side of question. But he never does. For more than 300 pages, Mr. Thompson travels through the South observing customs, outlooks and people and subjecting them to an unremitting stream of denunciations.
And unshockingly he find the South to be a hellhole of racism where among other outrages black and white neighborhoods are <shudder> intermingled:
More disturbing is his refusal to take seriously any evidence that Southern racism has diminished, even when that evidence comes from African-Americans themselves. He is aware of reports in the New York Times and elsewhere that black Americans are moving to the South in record numbers. A black New York native living in Oxford, Miss., tells him, "I love it here." But Mr. Thompson dismisses what he calls "breathless predictions of a post-racial South." They just make him look harder for racism-and of course he finds it.
...He is outraged, for example, to discover the close proximity of poor black and middle-class white neighborhoods in Southern cities.
Oh and apparently Ohio and Illinois are now part of the South since some of Thompson's examples of Dixie backwardness are located there.
But hey how can you count on mere rivers to hold back such an overwhelming tide of Southern ignorance and iniquity - or a steadily growing stream of Yankee immigrants crossing the border into deepest darkest Dixie looking for a better life.
But the best summary is from this review blurb on the Amazon page:
"Thank you for the copy of Better Off Without 'Em, but I'm afraid it's New York and San Francisco that I think should secede."

Who gained the most from the euro?
Well based on this chart the net effect of the Euro was a massive gain for Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Finland at the expense of every other EU country.
Guardian Writer: "I Wish My Mother Had Aborted Me"
I wish she had aborted me because I love her and want what is best for her.
Which is basically a long-winded way for the author to declare that her life has been a complete waste up until now. But Beisner also covers that point as well:
The world would not be a darker or poorer place without me. Actually, in terms of contributions to the world, I am a net loss. Everything that I have done - including parenting, teaching, researching, and being a loving partner - could have been done as well, if not better by other people. Any positive contributions that I have made are completely offset by what it has cost society to help me overcome the disadvantages and injuries of my childhood to become a functional and contributing member of society.
But after she describes how fucked up her mother was/is, I'm not sure that having a child or not would have made much difference. Perhaps a better title would have been 'I Wish My Mother Have Given Me Up For Adoption' or 'CPS - Where Were You?'.
Oh and Beisner probably needs to get her depression and self-loathing treated - if not for her sake then for her husband's and children's.
In fact the actual number of 'swing voters' who can actually be swung is remarkably small:
In spite of clichés about Nascar dads and Walmart moms, the actual share of voters nationally who are up for grabs is probably between just 3 percent and 5 percent in this election, polling experts say. The Obama and Romney campaigns are expected to spend on the order of $2 billion, in part to try to sway this tiny share of the electorate.
"There's a very small slice of people who are genuinely undecided, but it's enough to win the presidency," said Rich Beeson, the political director for Mr. Romney's campaign.
Which is about $220 per undecided vote. And note that 'swing voters' only matter in swing states.
MST3K and the heavily anticipated return of Manos: The Hands of Fate, and RiffTrax
Yep Manos is finally back in theaters but this time in live MST3K/RiffTrax-style.
But we were able to find, on our own, a theatrical print that's very nice. It's better than anything that's out there, so it'll be nice. You know, it tamps the "creepy" down a little bit. But the reason to do it was that we'd all forgotten it. We really had, and we thought after 19 years, there's gonna be a whole bunch of people who haven't been exposed to the horror. And it's only fair that they should have to, since we've endured it. Luckily, we've forgotten everything, so it'll be fresh eyes.
Unfortunately the live national showing was last week.
But not to worry - there's something even worse coming:
We're doing a live showing of Birdemic coming up in October, I don't know if you've seen this, but it. it just makes me smile. Manos I find kind of creepy, but Birdemic is bad on that level that...you know, every single choice this guy made was the wrong one. Like every frame of the movie was a wrong choice, every actor was wrong, and yet, it's a sublime experience. The unintentional humor is there throughout, it doesn't really drag in terms of that. That's the one that is currently my favorite.
It's important that you realize that it's a serious attempt at making a good movie. That's something you need to get over, because when I first watched it, I was like, "Well, this is ridiculous, someone just tried to make the worst movie ever made." Then you look into and you realize, "Oh no, he was entirely sincere in every bit of it," and that makes it so much more fun.
Worst Hotel in the US: Executive Inn in Belleville, IL
But it's only ranked #8 out of 10 so you could do worse in Belleville. Here's one of the reviews titled, "Bring some bleach. And a weapon":
The window was broken, the carpet was stained to the point that it almost looked like old flannel, the beds were broken and crooked... the bathroom would have been too gross for an uncensored HBO special, I think that the walls in the actual room were made from cardboard...As we walked upstairs and through the hall, we were "greeted" by a man who burst out of his hotel room and looked a lot like a haggard BB King, fresh after a shot of "mace" directly to the eyes. After asking each one of us (there were 4 of us) if we had any cigarettes or anything to smoke, he let us go, but not before watching us take every last step into our 2nd room...
I would recommend visiting this place if you don't have any children to care for and want to shoot a documentary on the inner-workings of a drug ring.
On the other hand the on-site hooker is an amenity that not all chains offer.

The After School XXX Special Awards
The newest recipient of our After School Special Awards goes to Brittni Colleps, a married mother of three and teacher from outside Ft Worth, Texas, who is accused of not only sleeping with five student athletes from her school, but having group sex with four of them all caught on tape. Brittni made sure to do her homework though, as she made sure all the students she packed on top of her were eighteen. The prosecution was so confounded by how to prosecute her that they had to invent a brand new crime just to keep Colleps off the street.
Where the hell were these teachers when I was in school?! My female high school teachers ranged from anti-viagra up to meh at best.

So I went there, to see what it was like. From a friend of a friend's mouth, I did indeed hear the dreaded N-word, that is not uttered in polite company in the NE. But, like Chuck Thompson, I also saw white people and black people living and interacting together, far more closely than one sees in the rigid de facto segregation of the Northeast. I concluded that to avoid an entire population is far more racist than to live cheek-by-jowl with them, and insult them from time to time. Sort of like Britain and France. So you can keep your Southern racist stereotypes coming from the mouths of Northeasterners who live resolutely white. I am not buying.
The ultimate expression of this is Vermont. So self-satisfiedly liberal, so utterly devoid of black people.

One of our brats needs a copy of MS Office for school She conveniently did not load the program onto her computer before she left for college (660 miles away). So, after the panicked call from the brat, I called Microsoft to see whether she can download the program and use my key. I spoke with an extremely pleasant customer service agent who said that he could ship her a copy of my install disk, complete with an extra key and two licenses, and because it was such a hassle for me he would upgrade shipping to next day for no charge.
This was Microsoft. The evil empire. I have based my computing life on hatred of this company. I don't know what to do!

What Chuck Thompson clearly doesn't understand is that it isn't just a North/South thing, but it's more an Urban/Rural thing.
The South would only be too happy to accept his prescription for his imaginary problem. The south would also be happy to watch his ass starve in his overpriced Manhattan apartment.

They don't seem to get that most middle class Americans {b]WANT to be rich.

I suggest that Thompson go stand at the corner of Broadway and Castleview Terrace on Chicago's north side. Castleview was the street on which that noted lefty Studs Terkel lived: it's part of the aptly-named Gold Coast. Turn the corner onto to Broadway, and within a few strides you have walked from the top of America's economic ladder to the bottom. But that doesn't fit his prejudices, so the asshole won't even look.

If Chuckles and his ilk want a fucking divorce, I'm game. Let's draw up the damn papers and get it over with before we end up killing each other (again).
Either that, or we can return to living under the Federalism the Founders envisioned and let the States offer true alternatives to each other. If Mass wants to be a high tax nanny state - let 'em. If TX wants to be low tax with no social safety net - let 'em.

Their contempt for anyone living to the north of them is equally strong. Chicagoans ruined the western Michigan lakeside town where my sister once lived - she bailed out a decade ago.
That contempt is largely true of all denizens of large cities in the Midwest. When they lower themselves to come out among the hoi polloi, they are granting US a great boon.

But I guess racial harmony eludes those folk in the South like it does in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Detroit, Newark, and Chicago.
Elitist pukes like Chuck Thompson and Thomas Frank want to live in Europe, but they hate the individual tax rates there. Besides, it's full of white people who'll lecture you on racism in America and then throw bananas at African soccer players.

My sister had a great story about northerners finding out just how racist they were when they came down south. Sis was a vet student at Mississippi State and had her friend and fellow student from Jersey in the car. Friend made a habit of remarking about how racist the South was since she was still fairly new and hadn't left campus that much. They stopped at a convenience store in some small MS town that was majority black to get some drinks for the road.
My sis, without a second thought, jumped out of the car to go inside and turned to talk to her friend who was still sitting petrified inside the car.
Sis walks back and says "Aren't you coming in?" Friend says "No." Sis says "Why not?" Friend says "There's nothing but black people in there!"
Needless to say, her friend's sanctimonious northern hectoring ceased after that day.

Then, in a carefully planned operation, a Tea Party-inspired militia occupies the city hall in Darlington, South Carolina, disbands the city council, detains the mayor, and disarms the local police and/or "turns" policemen to its cause. The story continues:
With Darlington under their control, militia members quickly move beyond the city limits to establish 'check points' -- in reality, something more like choke points -- on major transportation lines. Traffic on ... [major roads] and commercial and passenger rail lines are stopped and searched, allegedly for 'illegal aliens.' Citizens who complain are immediately detained. Activists also collect 'tolls' from drivers, ostensibly to maintain public schools and various city and county programs, but evidence suggests the money is actually going toward quickly increasing stores of heavy weapons and ammunition. They also take over the town web site and use social media sites to get their message out unrestricted[.] ...
The article goes on to explain how true Americans will expect the military to efficiently kill, dissuade, and demoralize the "enemy" as effectively "as if it were acting overseas."

Years ago I ended up working in Chicago on a long-term contract and was looking for place to live. And pretty much all my co-workers - even black ones - told me that as a person of pallor I should never consider a place east of street X or south of Y. There was basically just a safe-zone rectangle where racism wouldn't result in my premature demise.

Not really. DOS kinda mimic's some of the low number Int21 FCB call functionality for porting ease reasons, but the guts of the systems were quite different.
IBM actually looked into getting in bed with DRI when the MS relationship was strained, but the DR-DOS code base was such an incompatible mess it didn't work out.

Just for starters, their welfare and unemployment benefits are draconian and heartless. Not a drug rehab, PP clinic or LBGT resource center anywhere to be found. ...and they're damn near Nazis when it comes to their treatment of undocumented Americans. When you throw in the fact everyone is armed to the teeth and halfway into a bottle of Jack by noon, it's only a matter of time until they all kill each other.
Why anyone would ever even dream of leaving the North or the West coast and moving to this hellhole is a complete mystery.

The other thing I saw for the first time in the North was entire towns full of nothing but white people. We didn't have that in the South. Any given town in any Southern state has both black and white people (and probably a bunch of Mexicans, too). So now I know that all-Aryan towns are non-RACISM because that's a Yankee thing, but towns with a mix of different people are RACISM.
I went to school with black kids, asian kids (including some south Asians, a rarity in those days in the US), and a multiracial girl. That was in the South in the 1970s-80s. Thirty years later my kids are in school in Massachusetts with nothing but white kids. So all-white schools are non-RACISM, and schools with kids of all colors are RACISM. Who knew? We could have saved all that bother about school desegregation back in the 1950s if we'd just had this guy's wisdom to guide us.

The license dispute is what motivated IBM to look at DRI.
MS said the DOS 6.0 compression and memmaker weren't part of DOS and were part of a separate product called "enhanced tools". They actually used the "enhanced tools" nomenclature on the product media to try and make the distinction.
MS withheld functioning code for the compression driver load, so IBM did a clean room reverse engineering of it and contracted with AddStor to make a MS compression interface compatible compression driver. That's what shipped in the 6.1 and 6.3 IBM releases. The IBM DOS 7 release switch to Stacker, but the stacker driver was also moded to use the reverse engineered MS compression driver interface.
The MS interface loaded the compression driver prior to processing config.sys so the compressed drives were visible to subsequent config.sys processing by the DOS kernel/loader. All the prior schemes that had to work without kernel support were a lot clunkier.

I mentioned Chuck Thompson a week or so ago and I'll say again what I said then. I'm fine with the south seceding as long as they agree to take the inhabitants of Atlanta with them.
As for the Guardian writer, someone else commented several days ago that "she loves abortion more than she loves life" and I think that about sums it up. Pretty fucking pathetic IMO and the arguement she uses about keeping people out of poverty is just asking to be turned into a China-esque policy where people who make under a certain amount of money should be forced to abort pregnancies.

Found this...
Christopher Colleps, Brittni's husband, said that he was working to forgive his wife for what she did. Though the couple had engaged in legal group sex with other adults together, he felt wronged by her actions with her students, he said.
Fuck this guy. $20 says he and her planned it as a thrill, and when she got caught he has to play the wounded husband in order to prevent CPS from getting involved. I feel sorry for the kids: at best they have a father who is a weakling and a fool, or at worst two parents who are scum.

Of course Mexicans & African-Americans support Democrats. Minorities in this country would probably starve if not for the selfless devotion and actions of compassionate and progressive Americans such as yourself. It's amazing that in this day and age there are still racist Southerners in this country who continue to spout the same tired rhetoric that Mexicans & African-Americans have the intellect, work ethic, and character to succeed "on their own"....without necessary affirmative action programs and mentorship by progressive Americans such as yourself.
Without visionary founding Norheners & Democrats such as George Wallace, Woodrow Wilson, William Fulbright, Sam Ervin and Al Gore Sr., blacks would still be stuck on plantations.

Hotel AC was a big part of the magic of Summer vacations in Florida when I was a kid. Walking into that ice-cold hotel room after a day-long drive(no car AC either, just vent windows and mom smoking) is something I'll never forget. My sister and I used to crank that hotel AC down to frosty, and mom and dad never objected. Those ceiling fans, especially the wobbly ones, used to alarm me when I was little. I would try to position myself in the space that was not directly under them.

Never, and I mean never, have I seen the overt racism I have seen since moving to Chicago.
I never KNEW a person who so casually used the N word, so casually talked of "shines" or "shitheads."
I love Chicago and don't mean to paint with a broad brush. The South has problems just like the NE and the West and the SW and everywhere else.
I don't intend to move again.

Maybe they should have fed the eagles in the study whole fish instead of fish filets and then their shells would have been thicker because of adequate dietary calcium. But, that would not have delivered the desired result of banning DDT. If you want to ban a pesticide, you have to expect a few million deaths in Africa.

You left out the crystal meth, moonshine, and oxycontin. Yep, we have problems in the red states, and we know exactly what they are. So go ahead and keep those high tech jobs, and we in the energy producing states hope those high tech jobs can keep on keeping on being powered by unicorn farts and Barack's magic light. Oh you didn't know that almost all of your energy comes from those nasty red states? Well they do.
As for you education system, hey we will be more than happy to make sure that none of our students go to your schools, now would you please make sure that your kids don't go to any of ours.
As for us being obese, got us there also. But don't you worry about that, when we stop shipping all of our nasty food to everyone in the blue states, you all will be much thinner, we will be much fatter.
But hey, we in the red states are much more charitable than those in the blue states, so we probably would send some bags of food to all of you. Hell, we will probably even stencil the sides of the bags like the UN does in 3rd world shitholes!

The self-hating, suicidally nihilistic left in all its gory depravity.
As I say, this self-hate the leftist hold is their only reasonable position. It's a shame they don't act on it and take themselves out quietly instead of holding on so that they can bring their private misery to everyone around them. The self-hating left only stays alive because they see others who don't hate themselves and they feel it's their duty to make life as miserable for those others as their own are. Pathetic ... but the left already knows that about itself.

I've lived in the South, I've lived in the North.
I had actual honest to goodness not white people in my neighborhood in the former while in the latter, excluding Asians, segregation is the rule of the day.
I knew some bigots in the south, and they were loud and ugly - but they weren't respected. I've met many people in the North who have told me they are the most racially tolerant people in the world - and then gotten their ugly version of the "truth about the races" after a few beers.
And the worst bible thumping busybody I ever met in the South has *nothing* on the average environmentalist I've met in the North.

But they knew a guy who did, bought it cheap, finished up the hardware interface layer and presented it to IBM. That was DOS 1.0
DRI's problem was always arrogance. They thought they were the only game in town and IBM would have to come to them. They were wrong.
In the market is where MS had the huge advantage. CP/M had the name, but DRI wanted huge money for CP/M-86 and IBM was forced to offer it at around $400, while they could offer the MS product for about $79 (IBM also offered IBM branded UCSD P-system initially and Xenix after the XT showed up).
It was the huge price delta that decided who got the market share, not any particular treachery. By the time DOS 2.0 appeared, its architected driver interface, handle based I/O, and path/directory structure had it eclipsing CP/M-86 from a developer's POV.
MS was willing to do the IBM hardware guys needed too. Every DOS release from 1.0 through 5.0 was driven by significant hardware advances.

One thing I've been told by liberals many times is that it is the blue States that are the productive ones and the red states the parasites.
They often point to New York's large tax base, led by the very liberal New York City.
But the same liberals will tell me that Wall Street is to blame for the current depression. And Wall Street is the financial engine of New York City.
Odd isn't it?

Someone on here debunked the whole tax cut nonsense recently. He lowered the amount the gov't witholds from your check, not the actual amount you pay. So you either get less of a refund or you end up owing money.
The payroll tax cut, yeah that was brilliant. Let's bankrupt the entitlement programs even faster while not even acknowleding they're going bankrupt.

Sean,
re: "Alexandria isn't a county. It's not even in a county. It's an independent city."
Sorry, been frozen for last 100 years (In 1870, the independent City of Alexandria seceded from Alexandria County, and because of the confusion between the city and the county having the same name, a movement started to rename Alexandria County. In 1920, the name Arlington County was adopted)
Obviously didn't mean to say "Alexandria County"

There is a very dark place in the center of strongly political liberals.
If you look at someone like O'Rourke or Breitbart, you see men that loved life.
When you look into the liberal heart though, you often see the love of death. Normally it is pointed outward - too many brown people using too many resources, too many religious people stopping the march of science, too many archaic individuals who refuse to get with the program...and wouldn't we all be better without these types...really?
But it is nihilism ultimately. They've replaced religion with politics. And it has made them sick.

your ability to bring up a few mafia families in other parts of the country (don't pat yourself on the back too hard -- they are all over, after all!) does little to mitigate the absolute fact that, with few exceptions, the mafia have little actual centralised power in the new england towns that dot the NE landscape as they do in places like chicago and manhattan.
crime is lower in new england mostly because there are fewer criminals. there are fewer criminals in new england mostly, i'll posit, because there is a much stronger sense of community up there.
that's all i'm saying. if you weren't so encumbered by these visceral psychological reactions you have every time you read my name, maybe you'd be able to see that it's not really a particularly controversial point i'm trying to make (and it's a point that accords pretty well with christian social philosophy, for that matter!).

Bullshit on the "lower crime rate". It is a case of the crimes not being reported. Either the victim decides it is too much of a hassle, or the locality doesn't report it to the FBI. It helps to make the blue city politicians look like they have cut down on crime.

I grew up in South Dakota, where the dialect is very similar to Minnesota's, esp. in the eastern part, where we were. To this day, when meeting strangers on vacation or whatnot, we can identify each other as Minnesotans and South Dakotans, even though I only spent my first 14 years there. Been almost 3x that time that I've been in WA, but the accent is still there, according to my friends. But Chicago is even more pronounced, just admit it. "DA BEARSss!"
Michelle Bachman drove me crazy during the debates, because her 'sota accent is sooooo pronounced! She would always say "preznent of the u-nine-id states". GRRRR.

When I moved to Rhode Island I was appalled by the insanity on the roads. I loved how they would make left turns onto roads - pull out to stop traffic in the oncoming lane and then slowly inch into the far lane until you feel like giving it some gas. And keep your right turn signal on the whole time ... and for two more miles down the road.
There used to be major crashes all the time while I was there. I-95 was like bumper cars and traffic would snarl in both directions every other morning as everyone stopped to gawk at the latest wreck. I remember one of the first days I was there driving and I approached a yellow light. I was tentative about going through but finally did only to see 4 cars behind me all drive right through with no hesitation, at all. It made my jaw drop.
And the Rhode Islanders used to make jokes about how they drove in Massachusetts. I told them they were all crazy. They made Israelis look like sane drivers, which is something.

2nd rule of driving in MA - a minimum of 4 people are allowed to run a red light. If you pull into an intersection before that's happened and get hit, its your fault.

When I was in school in the U. P. (Marquette) in the 60s & 70s, there were two, count 'em, two African-American families in our town. They were both affiliated with NMU and contributed a grand total of four yoots to the public school system.

Well that's the only thing you've said so far that makes any sense to me. I went to a private academy for middle school and while there were no problems with the curriculum, the teachers weren't very good and they were very totalitarian when it came to their authority.
I was seriously threatened with suspension in 8th grad because one of my teachers saw me and some friends at the movies and we were going to see one of the matrix sequels. It didn't matter to them that my mother had bought the ticket for me because seeing an R rated mvie was against school rules. Just check their accreditation and make sure to go over school policies before sending your kid to one.

Once you get 60 miles or so north of the NYC clusterfuck its pretty much like western MA or VT. At the time, the little town I grew up in 20 miles outside Albany was pure Norman Rockwell indistinguishable from any small town in MA/VT/NH.
NY is really two states. NYC/long island and on up to about Putnam/Orange counties, then everything else. Eastern Rensselaer county where I grew up was pretty rural and redneck, and still is to this day...the whole 1960's/hippy thing never really made it that far...or if it did, it was promptly shot and dragged out into the woods.

I have spent a little time in Clay county and Hazard. There are places where there are satelite dishes on really run down shacks and trailers. Big fucking deal. Public schools "teach" more bullshit PC lies than any religious school could even think to. And the public schools come down harder on any students who don't toe the bullshit PC line harder than any parochial schools, too.
So they taught you about a young Earth. Who gives a shit? Your parents are around for a reason. School is not the be all and end all of knowledge. It's only the public schools that have demanded that status and they are the ones that force the most ridiculous, clearly untrue bullshit on kids.
There is nothing in this world as twisted and demented as a public school curriculum. Nothing.

NCVS may be more accurate for broad aggregate data. Its not based on crime reports like the UCR is, rather an extensive household survey, so it can pick up a lot of the more petty shit that never gets reported to the police. Its still a sample, but they try to do a better job than most political pollsters and the sample size is huge.

Again I'll mention that the northeast has a much lower number of minorities then southern states do. This is important when it comes to crime statistics because according to the DOJ, African Americans have been responsible for 52% of murders in the past 35 years and other violent crime statistics are similar.
I'm not trying to sound like a racist, I'm just stating fact. When 13% of the population is responsible for over 50% of serious crime in the country and a large of that 13% lives in southern states, it's going to skew the numbers a bit.
This is what happens when the so called leaders of the black community are still living in the 1960's and believe that racism is still the biggest issue facing their community instead of the fact that black people are killing themselves off more effectively then racists could ever dream of doing.

"last time i checked, south was a direction. but you learn something new from these southern-educated folks every day, i guess."
... such as "The South", when referring to the U.S., has a specific geographic meaning. It specifically does not refer to any state west of Texas, and everyone who had graduated high school in the US knows this.
"as to MN, minnesota isn't part of new england. being as the point i was making was that THE STRUCTURE OF NEW ENGLAND SOCIETY was partially responsible for the reduction in per capita crime, ..."
Your data does not support your claim
"... i don't know why you think i should have to explain a deviation from the pattern of a NON-NEW-ENGLAND STATE.
try thinking these things through on your own. "
Ahhh, "Moving Goal Posts" ... weak.
"furthermore, whether the states are west of texas or not, the fact remains that the population of states in the south are relatively less educated, relatively more criminal, and relatively more divorced than the population of new england states.
that point still stands."
No. Plainly no. Read previous response.
"i'm sorry you all seem to hate so bad that a blue state can be good at something....but the world doesn't work in black and white, regradless of what your preacherman told you."
... except that we're starting to see that "blue" states have some real ugly problems, just like "red" states ... except with generally higher crime rates.
"it's ok that red states aren't the best at everything.
nobody is perfect; ...
children. you're really like children, psychologically."
"I know you are, but what am I?" ... really, this is it??

There are two major possibilities I would entertain here:
-You are earnest in your statements, and simply have no fucking idea what kind of site you are commenting into.
-You are a shitty troll who still thinks the subtle sarcasm that most of us shed in puberty is just amazingly hilarious.
Either way, you have no idea why people around here call themselves Morons. One reason is that anyone trying to act otherwise will instantly have ten people who are *actually* way smarter than them jump up and *prove* the offender doesn't know shit. You are proving this by example.
If you actually paid attention, Professor, you might also notice that in general people who regularly post to these hallowed halls don't engage in the obnoxious drama queenery of eyerolling, stupid emoticons, and acting persecuted. You really need to make an effort to smell less like prissy cat piss and more like hobo-blood to fit in around here, whether it's to enjoy the Moron lifestyle or troll the fuck out of it.
It's probably against the rules to smarten up a chump around here, and I'll probably lose a corner off my recently issued Moron card, but seriously- either figure out who you are talking to, or troll harder, noob. The quality of troll that originally hooked me on this site is really starting to slip, and we are all expecting you to STEP UP YOUR GAME.

Yep it was Iowahawk that demolished the argument that WI had better schools than TX -- it came up because of the Scott Walker reforms and the howling of the union teachers in WI.
jimi ray, I still think you are a troll but a fairly polite one that is trying to engage. So I will give you the benefit of the doubt for the moment and point a few facts to you that you seem to be trying to avoid at all costs. @PurpAv has been trying to steer you to them, but I'll boil down a couple for you.
VT is over 95% white, with a touch over 1% blacks.
MS is almost 58% white, with 37.3% blacks
Those are 2011 census figures.
Now take a look at this analysis of crime by race:

Yes, this is a 2005 report, relying on government provided statistics and heavily footnoted with sources.
If you have any honesty in you, you check out this report and then quit comparing the apples and oranges of your beloved NE states with the rethuglican rest of the planet. Or something like that.
I'll check back here in a bit. It's a long report.

"last time i checked, south was a direction. but you learn something new from these southern-educated folks every day, i guess."
When I grew up it pretty much was. We didn`t care where you were from as long as you fit in and did not try to change us to your way of thinking. Then Hollywierd and the politicians decided to bring back old prejudices, and portray Southeners as backwoods hicks. I have had to fight an accent being associated with lack of intelligence since the early 80`s.
So.... fuck `em, and if you want to throw down IQ`s, I`m good to go.

We bought this house in 1997, it was built in '55, but has been substantially remodeled by every single cotton-pickin' owner since.....whether justified in his self-assessment of remodeling skills or not. One of its original features is a crank-out window in the bathroom.
Now, we've hated this thing since before we moved in, but we had another remodel done right when we bought it and discovered that the interior door frames were really odd. As in, they probably had been scavenged from a contemporary hotel project that fell through -- because they were made of thick steel and had tabs that extended about 10" into the wall. To move one doorway, we came very close to nuking the entire house from orbit......just to be sure. This crank-out window was made of steel and was embedded in a stucco wall, so we were cautious.
The BH, however, had a 3-week work assignment out-of-state, and my favorite insane handyman guy was available, so I figured we'd try it as soon as she flew out.
I measured the size of the window, compensated for the thickness of the drywall, and ended up with a somewhat standard size (48" W x 24" H). To get that with obscure glass is a special order that took 2 weeks. No problemo.
BH left, I started tearing into the wall and.....er.....there was no drywall, they'd skimmed over studs. The window opening was, like, 46-1/2 inches wide. No way to special order that in time, so I got creative. 3'Wx2'H windows weren't special order -- grab one of those. Then fill in the extra area with glass blocks.
Things went pretty well for a while there, until it became obvious that glass blocks, the interior wall, the exterior wall, and the window were not even close to lining up at the same depth......which led to another improvisation. I grabbed $100 of red oak in 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" and started to piece together a vaguely Arts-and-Crafts melange.
So, that I can say "Last coat of polyurethane on the window today, and it looks maaaaahhhhvelous!" is the end of a "tightrope without a net" experience.....oh, which BTW got gobsmacked when the BH's project got torpedoed a week in -- on Thursday, she was saying that things were going well enough but she might need to stay for an extra week to work out the bugs; on Friday, she told me she was flying back the next day.
OK, let's see how far behind I've gotten while typing this......

DC, I'm not seeing the disaster here. Are the 4x4's straight? If so, why not drill 1" holes in each leg, run a piece of 3/4" pipe through both holes, and cap both ends to hold it in place?
Posted by: Scobface at August 23, 2012 03:09 AM (IoNBC)
Pretty similar to my thoughts.....but I was thinking more of cut wood block, drill 3/4" hole, then saw block in half. Screw 1/2 block to 4x4 below pipe, insert pipe, screw other 1/2 block to 4x4 above pipe.

I hate those frigging door frames. I ran into those quite a few times, depending on what development I was working in. That shit was standard in some houses, so yours isn't actually unique, and yeah, removing one requires orbital mass drivers.

One of the funny things about growing up near LA is getting all the earthquake-drill stuff. They keep saying over-and-over that you should stand and brace yourself within a door frame.....and, yeah, that made sense after we built some houses -- you wouldn't be in the middle of some clear span that might collapse, but it's still just framed a little better. But these fuckin' metal doorframes wouldn't just be the best place to take shelter if there was a quake, they'd be the last things standing if SF got nuked.

Alternatively, if they'd like to relocate to SF and get nuked, that'd be fine also.
Or if they'd like to build a new HQ on the San Andreas fault using ecologically-sensitive building materials like recycled glass, I'd say that was also fine.

New Yorkers have such a distorted view of where they live. "It's so fast paced." No, it's not. People rush from one long line to another long line and wait their asses off for almost everything. Waiting is a lot of things, but fast paced isn't one of them.

It's only 70's if it's paneling veneer (or vinyl print) over particleboard. If it's actually pieced thin oak boards (as mine is), it's more 1900's (Gamble House, for instance, finished 1909).
In this case, the real problem is a lack of standardization. If current standard techniques had been used, the 24x48 window would have worked. Or, using a 24x36 window and glass blocks, they'd have been the same thickness. Or the drywall had been there, or the whole damned thing been square.....so going retro solved very practical problems. For instance, the glass blocks are about 1/2 inch depressed from the drywall (they're similarly depressed from the stucco outside, so it isn't like I could borrow from the one for the other). I did a "picture frame" of oak strips to make up the difference. The fact that this complex structure is visually interesting and shows off the woods is a nice bonus.

After moving in, we discovered that one wall of the LR/Dining nook (the one with the fireplace) was paneling over studs. No insulation, no drywall, nada. Tried to hang a picture, went right through. Some genius in the intervening years had floated it flat with drywall compound and applied a weird seagrass wallpaper.Tried to strip the wallpaper, and had chunks coming off that had traces of original paneling grooves, finally figured it out.
I'm sure you'll all be shocked to know that it now has insulation and drywall.

yeah not back then. Wall studs were rough cut and it was up to the plasterer to actually make straight walls, and they seem to size the windows according to the space they could shove them in. 90% of the work I did were in houses built between the 1880's and 1930's. Mostly kitchens and baths, but a lot of times it was whole interior remodeling. It always involved a long list of problems to be overcome. I'm not shy about saying the old houses have charm, but they totally blow ass to work on.

yeah when I gutted the family room I found out the assclown before me used old suspended ceiling tiles for insulation for the front wall. The dude who had this place was the original owner, but he did an endless amount of stupidity in it. Every time I go to do something I find hidden surprises. Some people just need their ass removed.

1) Sanctity of life
2) Rights of the minority
I do not believe the 51% should impose their morality on the 49%
If you don't like abortion, get you ass off the couch and convince people to eschew it.
It should not be a matter of law.

On the other hand, there were several less-successful ideas -- putting in cheesy Home Depot cabinets, then laying tile to meld them in. Can't pull the cabinets without leaving a gaping hole in the tile.

Gotta ban abortion incrementally.
How will any fetus be safe while wire hangers are still plentiful throughout the land?

Pro-life folks are doing it wrong. They should spend all their time trying to recruit from the few surviving sons and daughters of the pro-choice folks. After all, it's not like they'll be outnumbered.

I know, I just don't have the time even though it would help immensely with furniture making

I have lived all over the country, North, South, East, and West. The most racist person ever met was a guy in the Navy from North Dakota. The first black he ever met was in the Navy and he soon learned that the cat IV blacks in the Navy were not the "best of the bunch".
The only place where I have ever seen a live KKK march and parade was in MD. In fact, the States with the highest KKK membership are IL and IN.
Sure there are bigots here, there are bigots in NY, and there bigots in CA. And This Thompson SOB is a biggot as well. My word for him is he can kiss my redneck ass.

Forgot who said it but it's worth repeating:
"North, east, and west are directions. The South is a place."
The most prejudiced place I've ever visited was upstate New York. They even hate each other.
