Dream Team: The 10 Best Conservative Columnists
Okay I'm down with 8 of these but I just don't consider David Brooks or Peggy Noonan (post-2000) particularly conservative or all that great. Falling for Obama in 2008 ought to put you in the cornfield of conservative punditry for a good decade or so.
And frankly I can't recall a single memorable George Will column in years. According to hearsay he's focusing these days on the grandeur of baseball and why blue jeans and football should be banned.
The Election According to Amazon Sales
Even NY is only 56% blue while DC is the bluest in the country with 74%.
Tales from Development Hell: The Greatest Movies Never Made
For all the reboots/remakes/sequels being made these days there were many others that were eagerly awaited yet never got made:
This wasn't always the case, however. Six years passed between Aliens and Alien3, eight between Batman & Robin and Batman Begins -- and an unthinkable eighteen fallow years between Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and Superman Returns. So what was going on for all that time?...With my next book, Tales from Development Hell, I chose a variety of projects -- a few stillborn, others aborted, one or two with a particularly painful gestation -- which aimed to illustrate the kinds of problems which can beset a film, even when some of Hollywood's heaviest hitters are involved.
Why were Oliver Stone's and James Cameron's thrilling takes on the Planet of the Apes property rejected in favor of Tim Burton's unimaginative "re-imagining"? How come even the combined muscle of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven, at the height of their powers, couldn't get Crusade off the ground? How did Outbreak get a green light when Ridley Scott's The Hot Zone, set to star Robert Redford and Jodie Foster, did not?
When you're a Scandi stuck on a barren, arctic island, you get your jollies where you can:
Seven-year-old Jón Haukur Vignisson unexpectedly won the highest score among non-professionals in the annual national ram groping tournament organized by the Sheep Farming Museum in HólmavÃk, the Strandir region in the West Fjords, last weekend.
...Ram gropers are of all ages and walks of life. Among the prizes is sperm from the Insemination Center of West Iceland, which is much appreciated among sheep farmers.
How to Eat a Watermelon Correctly
You're doing it all wrong.
The Fork Cartel many years ago sort of brainwashed people into thinking they're supposed to eat a watermelon with a fork just in an attempt to sell forks.
The first problem is that the typical return on a bank robbery is pretty modest. Over a three-year period, one thing or another went wrong and 1/3 of UK bank robbers got away with no money at all. The average haul for a successful heist was around £30,000 (or about $47,000). Even then, about 1/5 of successful robbers were later caught, arrested and convicted, and in some cases the money recovered. The economists did discover a few ways that would-be Dillingers could increase their gains. Their data showed that each additional member of a robbery crew raises the expected value of the haul by £9,033.20 (~ $14,216 USD). "A larger gang may have spent more time on planning and reconnoitering," they write. "In short, it may be more professional, and the larger returns may reflect that." A large crew has one obvious drawback, though: there are more people that have to split the loot. If the crew divvies out the cash equally, "although the total haul goes up, the haul per person goes down."
They also found that packing heat has a positive effect on the take, and "the threat of firearm use in a bank raid raises the unconditional expected value of the robbery by £10,300.50 [$16,210 USD]," on average.
Given that you have a 50/50 chance of being caught by your 3rd heist, clearly you're better off running a brokerage firm and 'losing' a billion or two.
Interview with the Anal Tat Girl
So 22 year-old Maria Louise Del Rosario became internet-famous last week after she was videoed getting an anal tattoo at the Florida Tattoo Expo. And in this interview she explains all - and pretty much confirms every hypothesis you've ever formed about the kind of girl who gets anal tattoos.
On her first anal tat (the video is of her second third?):
"When I got it tattooed, he held my cheeks open while I was choking myself from the pain. Then we ended up breaking up because he said he couldn't see us getting married or starting a family."
On her fame:
Then she met Rockwood, who "hated seeing Vince there when we had sex," so she got "Rockwood" tattooed over her old one for his birthday. She claims Rockwood eventually got her thrown in jail for stealing.
...Now Del Rosario wants to take on a career in "modeling shit," which, according to her Facebook page, is a regular hobby of hers.
Currently the over/under for Maria's lifespan is 39.5 years.
Yahoo group. That is all.
And my Twitter spew.

I've been seeing these Amazon booksales charts and maps lately, and I have to wonder - are sales always conservative leaning, or do conservatives just have more recent books out.

Speaking of delving after dingleberries, I seriously doubt that Cameron or Stone could have delivered a better movie than Burton managed. Cameron would have given us noble-savage nonsense. Stone would have at least given us some gory chimpy face chewing and orang rape, but... actually, that's all he'd have done. The movie would have been disgusting.

The two good Alien movies both had a corporation as the villain, in effect. It was the Left's caricature of Halliburton / Blackwater.
After all the horribleness that Weyland-Yutani got up to, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a reaction and that by the time of Alien 3, Earth had gone commie.

Twenty years ago I had a mild crush on Peggy Noonan. She was pretty and a little winsom. Sometime in the middle of "The Bush Years" something snapped inside her. The combination of the shock of 9/11 (she lived pretty close to that) and then the incredible visceral hatred of Bush by the Left (and a lot of people in NY City) drove her around the bend. I really kind of loathe her these days. She has lost whatever it was that she once believed in, back when she wrote "What I Saw at the Revolution".
Her ex-husband, Richard Rahn, is quite a smart guy and a behind the scenes thinker for the Republican Party.. He only has one eye and wears a patch. So he's a bit of a pirate. ARrrrrrrgh!

This is a core problem with socialism.
You cannot effectively centralize all decision making in a modern economy in an insulated and unaccountable group of "experts".
And every year it gets worse as government acquires more power and the economy gets more complex.
This should be the era of freedom - especially with the fall of the Soviet Union - but liberalism has grown, basically unstopped, since the late 90s.

I'm always amused by the focus on evil corporations in the State Media, considering how at odds it is with actual history.
The worst corporate action* I can think of would be the Bhopal gas tragedy. Through criminal negligence, Union Carbide killed something like 10,000 people. Horrible indeed.
But the list of governments that have murdered more then that is long. Rommel estimates fifteen in the 20th century that have killed at least a 100x more. Interestingly, in only 3 of those cases has the State Media shown any significant interest in covering them - National Socialist Germany, Imperial Japan, and Communist Cambodia.
*Actually the state government had its hands dirty too...

Why is this such an improbable issue? I thought we were done with Commies when the wall came down, the USSR and Yugoslavia imploded, and the Chinese decided to work their butts off to flood the West with cheap DVD players....and, yet, here we are with Valerie Jarrett in charge of the US of A.

There were a bunch of people on the right (including her, Brooks, Charles Fried, Chris Buckley, Doug Kmiec, etc.) who went over to Obama, either 1.) because they saw the Republicans as being on the wane for the foreseeable future and wanted to jump on the bandwagon while they still could or 2.) because saw his academic pedigree vs. Palin's as a more important factor than their stated principles. I never want to hear from any of these people ever again.

#97 I didn't read it but Drudge has a link about the Marine having been released or, at least, ordered released by a judge.
He was released. One of the psychiatrists threatened him with "brainwashing," which was interesting as well. The video of him being taken (in his shorts, and not allowed to change) is on The Blaze. His sister filmed the whole thing. He and his lawyer are now suing the gubmint. Virginia has 20,000 civil committments annually, but it's a nationwide thing. Only a handful of states have laws against it.

As for the 2010 movie... well, in 2012, I suppose we are in a Cold War with Russia, in which one side supports the rights of Christians worldwide and the other is playing footsie with the forefathers of Hamas.
So, the 2010 movie got that much right.

A lot of leftists will vehemently swear they aren't commies. But if you're giving aid and comfort to those who fly the banner, how are you different in anything but name?
The only reaction she nailed was her own. That she remembered she was a Republican a few days before the election is cold comfort int he face of what was widely viewed as a pro-Obama stance from someone famous for writing Reagan speeches. This mislead a lot of people who took Noonan's approval as an OK to give in to the feel-good gesture of voting for a black man, regardless of who and what that black man really was.
This same sort of thing got us eight years of Clinton and the continuing annoyance of Mrs. Clinton. Those who were really paying attention tried to warn the country who and what this guy was, while those who lacked the will for a fight interpreted his lack of any real stance on an issue as making him agreeable. Then he turned out to be exactly the guy we were warned about, whose only saving grace was being easily rolled by a Congressional majority.
You'd think the electorate would start to notice that the guys raising the alarm have a pretty good track record in the last few decades.

Funny story, at least I think so. Back when I was active duty USAF, my unit in West Berlin had a particular picnic. Most of food (meat, corn-on-the-cob, beans) was already there and was cooked at the park we were in, but after that food was consumed, someone brought a couple of watermelons out from cold storage.
Know this: this was an intel unit and 95% of the unit was white. When the watermelons were brought out, my white compatriots stormed on them like there were never going to be any more of them seen again.
As I watch this, one of my black compatriots walked up beside me and said, 'so much for that stereotype. I guess the commander would frown upon me kicking all the white folks' asses to get some watermelon."
I concurred.

If you look at how far things have come since Babylon 5 was made on the cheap (I saw the sound stages during production several times and boy was it shabby compared to the Enterprise bridge on the Paramount lot; B5 put every dollar on the screen and used every trick to cut costs) a Robotech series is doable if you can get a $100 million production commitment up front from some venue like HBO. That may sound like a lot but compared to recent theatrical epics the cost per second of content is far lower. The last Transformers flick cost almost $200 million for 2 hours 34 minutes of run time. At least 5% of that was Shia LaBeouf. A TV series should be able to get through its first season with much lesser cost for actors. If it is successful it doesn't matter if the salary demands increase.
The real trick is convincing the guy who control things that there is a substantial market for this beyond anime geeks. Saying it was a beloved 80s cartoon is not going to endear you to the studio head after G.I. Joe did only so-so business on its $175 million cost.

They don't read but leftists do buy books! What better to accessorize those shelf thingies that came with the house?
Lefties bought Obama's books by the truckload, largely just to have them be seen in their homes. The election results make it abundantly clear that very few actually read those books.
Posted by: epobirs at August 23, 2012 08:09 PM (kcfmt)
LOL.
I couldn't begin to tell you why the political books skew Right. It may just be that the Left just has so many other books to read.
Certainly in the sci-fi section, the main authors are Left these days. The Dozois collections, for instance, have been getting more PC every year.
So, where it's not explicitly Right, I've been sticking with primary sources and really old books from Google.

And she was crap on that show, nothing more than a token conservative to agree with the democrats about how bad conservatives are. I think many of us were justified in our suspicions that she was only ever on the show in the first place because CNN knew they couldn't get a show on that had only Client #9 on as the host. It's always been true that most sci-fi stories are generally leftist. It's due, in good part, to the fact that leftism is stagnation and stagnation is leftism and it is near impossible for someone to create a truly dynamic world out of thin air that develps in any reasonable way. It's much easier to create a static world in which only a few things change here and there, which forces it to skew left in most ways even if the author doesn't intend it.
If someone could create a truly dynamic world that made sense that person would more than likely be doing something other than writing.

I think that anime has been released in the US several times with different names. Its like the opposite of Robotech which was actually 3 separate animes in Japan that they connected in the US to get a large enough episode run, and the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers which has actually used multiple japanese series for its source shows.

Can you confer with BBD and see which day would be best and get back to me this weekend? It'd be awesome to meet the famous Grim as well.....but "DL on a weekend" sounds a lot like "crowds" in the Common Tongue. We have a rough schedule and would like to firm it up soon and start having real days.

I bought the Kindle version of the first Dozois annual collection (stories from 1983) earlier this year, and since it was fairly good I bought the second one only to find that not only did the average quality plummet but there were several stories that seemed to have been included only for their left-wing politics. Does the series get better before again getting worse?

HereÂ’s the response from NRO editor Rich Lowry:
And this is where you come in. If Mann goes through with it, weÂ’re probably going to call on you to help fund our legal fight and our investigation of Mann through discovery. If it gets that far, we may eventually even want to hire a dedicated reporter to comb through the materials and regularly post stories on Mann.
My advice to poor Michael is to go away and bother someone else. If he doesnÂ’t have the good sense to do that, we look forward to teaching him a thing or two about the law and about how free debate works in a free country.
HeÂ’s going to go to great trouble and expense to embark on a losing cause that will expose more of his methods and maneuverings to the world. In short, he risks making an ass of himself. But that hasnÂ’t stopped him before.

For one thing, they still have the issue upon them -- the historic triumph they don't dare mention but which Republicans happily do.
Second, were Obamacare no longer the law, we might be seeing an uptick in hiring right now. Instead, that will be deferred until after November (and then possibly only if Romney's elected), and unemployment is rising in 44 states. Unemployment rising in 44 states is not what you want when just ten or so states will decide the election and unemployment has been 8 percent or higher for 41 months.
Third, had Roberts done otherwise, they might still have the issue of Medicare, which at this point they do not. When Paul Ryan was chosen to run with Mitt Romney, liberals planned to rip him to pieces over plans to trim Medicare. Somehow, they forgot that their own health care plan did much the same thing, covering 30 million new clients by draining millions from providers of Medicare. Although these cuts will not directly lead Medicare clients to pay more or lose coverage, they will end with many doctors and hospitals refusing to treat them at all.

I wonder if it has ever occurred to him that there would not be a single scientific instrument in orbit or beyond if not for the deep interest in blowing up our enemies and staging PR stunts against same? Without the non-scientific interests in launch capability, the funding would simply have never existed to develop the technical expertise and infrastructure that made instruments like Hubble possible.
Personally, I don't approve of taxpayers footing the bill for Apollo. But nor do I approve of the taxpayers paying for Hubble. And I'm a guy who enjoys reading the results of pure research. But I cannot give pretend an astrophysicist is any more entitled to pick his neighbor's pocket than a crack ho with ten kids, none of them with a father in common.
My preference would be to do away with NASA entirely and hand over what functions can continue to be justified the DoD for the Air Force and Navy to fight over. DARPA would be expanded to include those technology pursuits needed for advancing the launch systems and other things, as DARPA already does for a variety of military tech interests. That these often find very useful applications in the civilian sector is a happy side effect.
Humans may never do anything of value beyond this planet. This may even extend to human minds embodied in forms better suited to the larger universe. But this fate is guaranteed if we don't even try.

Yes, she did but it was a youthful cuteness that didn't transition into a mature beauty. I'm sure it came up here a few nights ago, that I was surprised how good Belinda Carlisle looked in post-GoGos career. I knew her distantly in her high school days and I'd have expected her to just keep getting chubbier and then go the full Mr. Creosote once she had a kid.

In a rational world there wouldn't be any large surpluses to apply to such stuff. Whatever was kept in reserve would be solely for dealing with the unpredictable but inevitable, such as natural disasters.
The vast bulk of funds that come under government control would instead stay in private hands. If some wealthy guy wants to launch and operate a Hubble, good for him. It's a gift to all mankind, even if some would complain they saw better uses for the capital. Let them whine. It's his money to do with what he wants so long as he isn't directly inflicting harm on other citizens or citizens of nations whom we're not currently peeved at.
Manned space flight is something I support but the way our government conducted it was just dumb and effectively sabotaged the whole concept ever since. We went to the Moon before we'd really gotten a handle on getting to orbit. Access to orbit had a lot of value for things beyond the military and scientific, as seen in communications.
Letting the military pursue reduced launch costs would have huge benefits for everything you might do in orbit, be it military, scientific, or industrial. Everything follows from what it cost to get a pound of anything to orbit and beyond.
I'd have been perfectly happy to delay setting boot on the Moon for a decade or more if it meant a much better developed ground to orbit capability with a well established civilian infrastructure. Imagine how much cheaper a commercial endeavor like Iridium could have been, and thus more viable with greater availability to more people.

Last year I tried to explain to some co-workers that Johnson sold the Space Program to the Southern voting bloc by packaging it as Civil War Reparations. Their minds were blown because they couldn't process the concept of reparations in any other context than gifts to the descendents of slaves. They couldn't comprehend that there was plenty of residual anger among Southerners, especially the middle-age men in government in the early 60s who had parents and grandarents who'd lived through the Civil War era.

Or you could just isolate things at the MPOE and go to whatever form of networking you favor from there.
When I first got DSL in 1999 (I was the only subscriber in the entire neighborhood for almost a year because they were really bad at telling people it was available and non-geek weren't inclined to ask for it yet) it was in a house where my sister and her husband formerly ran their business, so it was well set up for multiple phone lines with separate jacks for the business lines in certain locations. So it was really easy to isolate the DSL with a single filter at the MPOE in that case. The jack once used for the business line near my desk became the dedicated DSL inlet where the modem and router connected.
I used HPNA back then for connecting the downstairs. That wouldn't work in the current place because there is only a single jack on each floor, so powerline was the solution until I finally got permission to get to run some Cat 5e while fixing the horrible coax install.

There's a coax/twisted pair patch panel on the back, alarm system to the left, networking hub to the right (cablemodem, wireless router, gigabit switch, 2T NAS), and clear boxes of patch cords in the middle.

The LG BP-220 ($75 at Best Buy) cannot match a good HTPC but it is something my mother and sister can deal with and can even just pull the plug if they get too confused and need a blunt instrument to get them back to the main menu. Handles all sorts of burned discs, USB devices including NTFS volumes, and networks.

if I lived by ya, I could give you an old HTPC to give to them. It's a bit of a frankenstein of old parts left over from cannibalizing a few of my parents' HTPC. Just need blu-ray software and setting it up and it's good to go. Also think I have an old boxee in one of my closets
Posted by: The Dude at August 24, 2012 12:13 AM (tw6Ar)
If it was just me I'd use one of my old machines with a gpu that was strong on the decode but passively cooled. (My first DVD playback setup was a Quadrat decoder board and a 1x drive of the early generation that couldn't read CD-Rs. This was replaced with a far better Creative Labs kit that they sent multiple units of to Chaos Manor and I volunteered to test. So I'm used to playback systems that lack a bit of polish for the average user.) The real trick is getting something I can set up for the other people in the household. It remains to be seen if my mother can handle the LG deck but at least my sister is able to work it. With an HTPC setup she would inevitably paint herself into a corner the designer never anticipated. So it really needed to be an appliance that can be forcibly rebooted with little or no trauma.
Plus the LG was so dang cheap. That was the big surprise after the general crappiness of the various boxes I'd tried without an optical drive that cost as much or more. All of them tended to be very easy to crash if you fed them a file just a little different from what they expected. Since my content comes from a wide variety of, um, sources, that was a big problem. One of them locked up so badly I couldn't even do a factory reset. Which should have been impossible but it was returned to Fry's in an inoperable state.
For my mother the ideal thing would be a server that pulled down the requested file and put it on a VHS tape very quickly. She was young enough when VHS became big that it got into her brain before she ran out of neurons to use for new concepts. DVDs can get her flustered if they make the menus too elaborate. Her ideal computer would be like an Atari VCS that did 1080p. When she wanted to check her messages she'd plug in a cartridge that was labeled MAIL. She have another cartridge for Free Cell, and still other for each web site she is inclined to visit.

I just want to be a ticket to help the attendance tally and give some money to D'Souza, who though he is a bit incorrect (Barky doesn't get his anti-colonialism from trying to emulate his father) is still on the right track as Barky's anti-Westernism from growing up muslim in Indonesia with that insane cast of characters around him and his own limited pea-brain. It's still good to have D'Souza, who knows about anti-colonialism from India talking about his point of view, anyway.

A movie that will never be made?
How about an epic encompassing a Nephilim timeline? The scope could be an incredible escape. Antediluvian civilization, Solon & Atlantis legends, the building of the Great Pyramid, Enoch, all the way through the ages to include Alexander the Great and his UFO sighting, Columbus and his sighting, Nazi Germany and their pursuit of human hybridization until the present day UFO sightings and abductions. Portray the "aliens" as the fallen angels seeking to claim that they created us and people would have a new angle to consider.
History of the world through the eyes of Genesis 6:4, assuming the Sons of God were angels.
