Coming Around to Mitt

Here Andrew Ferguson, never a fan of Mitt, points out that Romney is one of the few politicians that you end up liking more the more you find out about him:

Almost every personal detail about Romney I found endearing. But my slowly softening opinion went instantly to goo when The Real Romney unfolded an account of his endless kindnesses-unbidden, unsung, and utterly gratuitous. "It seems that everyone who has known him has a tale of his altruism," the authors write. I was struck by the story of a Mormon family called (unfortunately) Nixon. In the 1990s a car wreck rendered two of their boys quadriplegics. Drained financially from extraordinary expenses, Mr. Nixon got a call from Romney, whom he barely knew, asking if he could stop by on Christmas Eve. When the day came, all the Romneys arrived bearing presents, including a VCR and a new sound system the Romney boys set up. Later Romney told Nixon that he could take care of the children's college tuition, which in the end proved unnecessary. "I knew how busy he was," Nixon told the authors. "He was actually teaching his boys, saying, 'This is what we do. We do this as a family.' "

...To this touching kindness and fatherly wisdom, The Real Romney adds other traits that will continue to grate-he's a know-it-all and likely to remain so, and his relationship to political principle has always been tenuous. Which makes him a, uh, politician. But now I suspect he's also something else, a creature rarely found in the highest reaches of American politics: a good guy.

10 Myths About Conservatives That The Media Just Know Are True

3. The GOP doesn't believe in community. President Obama likes to say that Republicans want everyone to be "on his own." In fact, conservatives, as Romney put it in a speech at Liberty University this year, believe family, communities, churches and other civil institutions are critical building blocks in society. They favor investing authority in the level of government closest to the people (locales and states), which they believe is most responsive and governs best. Republicans look upon some liberal statist schemes as both ineffective and destructive of those critical civil institutions.
5. Republicans have a problem with women voters because of abortion. The pro-life and abortion-rights divide is not gender-based. Moreover, Republicans tend to do fairly well with married women. (In 2004 President George W. Bush won married women by 11 points.) It is among single women that Republicans struggle. The reasons are complex, including Republicans' unwillingness to promise "Life of Julia" cradle-to-grave support.

NYT: OMFG Americans Are Supporting Russian Gun Companies!!!

Basically American buyers are keeping the Kalashnikov factory (Izhevsk Machine Works) afloat and that's horrible or something.

In an eerie postscript to the cold war, American gun enthusiasts have been buying Kalashnikov rifles and shotguns by the tens of thousands, helping the Russian arms manufacturer stay afloat in a global market oversaturated with its AK-47s, long the weapon of choice among the world's insurgents and armies. American sales of single-shot civilian versions of the Kalashnikov rose by 50 percent last year among buyers impressed with the automatic model's lethal accuracy in the world's trouble spots.

Can you spot the four inaccuracies (minimum) in the above two sentences?

A damned smart essay on Last Action Hero

Yup I only saw the Last Action Hero on cable a year or so after it came out and I had heard what a flop it was, but I enjoyed it and thought it was pretty clever. And if it had come out in say 2003, I think it would been much more successful.

25 August 1942: Milne Bay, Australia's Forgotten Victory

In late 1942 the Japanese Imperial Army had never been defeated and was poised to begin an eventual invasion of Australia - once they finished taking all of New Guinea.

But starting in August 25th a hastily reinforced garrison of Australian soldiers (along with some American engineers) defending the Milne Bay airstrip at the very tip of New Guinea managed to hold off and then eventually defeat a numerically superior Japanese force in what became known as the the Battle of Milne Bay.

Australians have rarely fought to defend their own land. Our Diggers have shed most of their blood fighting far from home. At Milne Bay it could be fairly said that we had our backs to the wall. (For those uncomfortable with the metric system, 900 km is about 550 miles.)

The Japanese were moving in to take control of the airfield. They had the numbers, and they were battle-seasoned. Against these odds, Australian soldiers and pilots successfully defended the strip. The battle lasted lasted more than a week, and by the end of it the opposing sides were fighting hand to hand.

Whether or not Tokyo intended a full-scale invasion of Australia, the importance of the win is hard to understate. It had a profound psychological effect upon the morale of all Allied troops. Sir William Slim, leader of British forces in Burma, later said:

"Australian troops had, at Milne Bay in New Guinea, inflicted on the Japanese their first undoubted defeat on land. If the Australians, in conditions very like ours, had done it, so could we. Some of us may forget that of all the Allies it was the Australian soldiers who first broke the spell of the invincibility of the Japanese Army; those of us who were in Burma have cause to remember."

35 Inaccuracies:

1. Civilian model of the AK-47 is semi-automatic, repeating rifle, not a single-shot;

2. AFAIK, the AK is renowned for it's ruggedness, simplicity of design and ease of repair, not accuracy (although I've never heard that it's necessarily inaccurate, though - just not that accuracy is its chief merit.)

3. "the rifle of choice among insurgents and armies".  My impression is that it is the small arm of choice for commie armies (got 'em at a discount from the USSR) and also in guerilla (sp?), which was a function of the fact that they were cheap and they stood up to a bunch of abuse.  But they certainly weren't the rifle of choice for any Western nation or any Eastern nation that allied itself to America.

4. Kalashnikov makes a shotgun?

Anyway, those are my guesses.

95 86 72, even an M2 can be surprisingly accurate Posted by: Jean at August 28, 2012 11:07 PM (WkuV6) Vietnam snipers (including Carlos Hathcock) put scopes on them, converted them to single-fire, and used them as sniper rifles (on occasion). Also the sighting guns for artillery (also .50 cal, but not M2s). Ultimately if the mechanism is solid and things don't move much, and the barrel is well-made, there's no reason a machinegun can't be accurate. Most of the problem is recoil-generated movement, either of the person or the mechanism.

Yay driving!

101 Don't get me wrong, they're not sniper rifles or anything.

Watch a slow motion video of an AK firing and you'll see where the reputation (regarding accuracy) comes from. It's like a fat woman doing the funky chicken.

R. Lee Ermey's Roll Call had a comparison for the AK and an American M-16.  The AK was of course easier to field strip and reassemble, but the accuracy bit at "full auto" was just silly.   The AK guys only were doing three shot bursts and you could tell that even in a three shot burst they didn't have much control.  Ermey was able to do actual full auto with the M-16 and was must more accurate.

Never to disappoint, the venerable liberal tone setter EJ Dionne said henexpected more from the speech and then nicely segued into the newly minted meme that Christie is setting the bar for Mitt.... In order to of course carry the meme to it's logical liberal progression that Mitt failed expectations. And the coup de Gracie of the just minted meme is that it took a real long time for the key note speaker and others to mention "Romney" in their speech. What will dear media say about an out of touch former disbarred president who levers his influence in less than 10 years to make 100M? Will they say anything about that?? And how incongruent and out of touch Clinton is??? Because that is the subtext NPR is continuing with along with their fresh "expectation" meme.

And there's also a lot of guys who prefer not to take a stand on the issue as a whole (making them nominally pro-choice) because they don't feel they have a right to prohibit it when they aren't the ones who'd be in a position to make the decision. That's how I felt at one point. I'm pro-life now, though, even in rape and incest cases.

They not only take care of  fellow Mormons. When my mom and dad's house was flooded in the "Great Flood" of (can't remember the year, but within the last decade), the local Mormon church brought them fresh water and other supplies. They didn't have to do that, they just did it. They have a lot of things going for them that most of us aspire to, but are too lazy to actually do.

225 Hey Ace,

Im with you on the bit about "Last Action Hero". I too caught it on cable shortly after it came out and thought it was terribly original. Also, the casting Arnold in the role of the brutish cop was easy and perfect. It harkens back to the old adage "If you cant laugh at yourself...". And ditto for the directors and producers that decided to make this.

I thought the timing of the movie was perfect as well. Action movies were at a point where there seemed to be scenes so common that a young kid could tell you what was going to happen next. And that is exactly what the kid did in the film. It wasn;t long after this movie was released did we start to see more creativity go into action films with more original plots (at least for a few years)

Got one just down the street.  I don't go in Publix or Winn-Dixie much anymore.  The everyda non-promo prices at the WMT seem to be a minimum of 20% less than the competition on average.

$1.28 for a bottle of Dew vs $1.79 at Publix.  Paper products, meats, veg, everything is less.  They got a Cott bottled cola that's cheaper than the Sams at $.68/2L and its actually drinkable.

My local one is as clean and well maintained as you can expect in a high traffic grocery store.

260 In re. Dallas Fed. Just google Fed Working Paper No. 126. It in sum indicates that continued monetary expansion through Zero interest rates and QE coupled with what is termed the "shadow banking system" in taking advantage of cheap money, creates malinvesments by inflating equities and commodities which will create a huge Frankenstein that will eventually yield to a system that becomes illiquid wrought with toxic debt that won't be able to be serviced. The shocker is the fact one of the Fed Banks is even publishing such. As most of you know or should know, the entire system is on clock to implode. It was never designed to be self sustaining. For those with ears who can hear beyond the din, fortify yourself with prayer because a reset is eminent. I would never lie to you.

The asian girl was cute but not model class and one other woman was OK. The black woman might have scored well but did not actually go topless, so is disqualified for the purposes of the judging.

What really ruined things was outright repugnant woman and gamma males. You aren't making a good case for your cause when passersby are shouting, "Put it on!"

I have never lived in a house with a dishwasher in use. Several of those places had dishwashers but my mother developed a dislike of them long ago, probably before my birth. In most of the places I've lived the dishwasher served as storage.

I can't speak for the siblings who've escaped into entire separate homes but around here the dishwasher is me.

393 I have seen a couple of references to Ryan being a musclehead, the "dumb jock" who gets to nail the Homecoming Queen, but Americans as a whole don't hate that sort of guy. Jealous outcasts do, but they already vote Democrat.

And if you listen to Ryan talking about, well, pretty much anything, it becomes obvious that he's really very smart. In a polite, non-threatening way. He doesn't condescend. It's no wonder he has the best approval ratings of all four guys on the presidential ballot.

399 So the panel on Greta is really down on Christie's speech.  Especially York.  I thought it was rock solid.  Their big hangup was he really didn't get around to mention Romney by name all that much.  Well, he didn't name Obama by name at all.

He made it clear that Romney is ready to get serious and that the Dems are ready to do anything they can to distract, distort, and scare.

I didn't see a big problem.  Ann Romney was great, but I could at least see where people would think her play to women was too transparent.  I didn't think Christie would receive a negative reaction from the right unless you were hoping for a ton of red meat to gnaw on.

Re Milne Bay - yes, an awesome accomplishment of arms by Australians, one of many in WWII.  Australia - America's constant ally for nearly a century (haven't missed a game by our side since before WW I).

But ...... wasn't the annihilation of the Ichiki Detachment on Guadalcanal at Alligator Creek on August 21, 1942?  That is, just days before the Milne Bay denouement?  That, I believe, was the first defeat of Japanese land forces by an Allied force.

OK, I'm not counting the abortive first Japanese attempt to take Wake Island right after Pearl Harbor, which was driven off with air and artillery action.  And led to arguably the best, and most American, short message of WWII (stiff competition there), when the beleaguered island commander responded to an inquiry as to his needs with "send more Japs".

(apologies if I'm repeating something above - sick of taking the time to scroll through all the comments and then have only a dead thread to comment on - curse of the late-night left coast morons, I suppose ....)

Happy thought for the evening:

Obama must be seriously pissed off tonight.  Two reasons:

1)  The main speakers tonight, didn't make it about Obama. Some say he wasn't even mentioned, except in some oblique, indirect way.

2)  I heard a reference made to the American Dream (not necessarily) - which is to say, people starting off with almost nothing, and building a great life for themselves.  This is sentral to what America is all about, and exactly what Obama repudiated with his "You didn't build that" speech.

I think by October they'll be yelling about killer saints and the odder aspects of Mormon theology in a desperate attempt to frighten voters away, because its just not working to stop R&R.
The last thing I want is for Romney to have some massive landslide though, what's his mandate then? Don't be Obama? Its not like he's promoting a strongly conservative agenda.

To my eyes Romney's expression came across as gentle smiling tempered by a slight humble embarrassment, as if he felt it were gauche to appear too pleased at people singing your praises. I inadvertantly just caught a few minutes of Conan. They were telling a series of jokes, where three celebrities answer questions.  Classic liberal crap.

When they got to answering the Question of "What do the American people want from a President, they had Obama answering something like "A strengthening of the middle class" (as if that's got anything to do with Obama), and Romney with a statement of standard conservative principles.  Paul Ryan was their punchline, with his answer being,  "The cold lifeless eyes of a serial murderer."

Wow. Paul Ryan, who's young, healthy, fit, likeable, and practically a female heart-throb described that way?  These a-holes truly live in a hate-filled world completely divorced from reality.

You want to actually be FUNNY, Conan?  Try finishing a joke like that with an ACTUAL quote - by Joe Biden.

'421  Not to mention all the references to "we did build that" or, "they built that".

I think that little "slip up" is going to haunt the SCOAMF. What a shame.'

My favorite, all-time politcal ad, is one I saw recently that featured Obama from beginning to end.  It starts off with his "out of context" ad, and then it plays the full context - audio of his own words - with video showing the glaring eyes of the people whose entire lives he has denigrated.

That ad tells a voter everything they need to know:

1) The President will lie to your face, and spend millions for an ad just to make sure you see it.

2) The President has complete contempt for the whole concept of the American Dream. It shows his viewpoint of "people of, for, and by the government", vs the American idea of "government of, for, and by the people". In that respect he is literally anti-American, and nobody who is familiar with is background is surprised by this.

That ad should be brought out over and over again.

488 The first thing president Romney needs to do is address the public in a nationally televised speech and level set expectations.  The public has had enough Unicorn bullshit from Obama that they might be more receptive to some hard reality this time.

People need to understand that we're insolvent and tough measures are called for if they are to maintain anything even remotely resembling the lifestyle they've become accustomed to.

They need to understand that there's no quick fixes left and all the usual cheap accounting tricks have been tried and used up over the past 40 years or so.  The only options left that will provide for the continuity of the United States as a nation are hard ones.

They need to understand that we're so badly damaged, real recovery will take decades, not years, and will span many administrations.

Under-promise/over-deliver and you're a hero.  Over-promise/under-deliver and you're a shitheel like Obama is.   I think having Ryan give a periodic 4 or 6 month public status report would be a good thing too.

And fix the fucking unemployment reporting so its not so fake and contrived.  That should be one of the first things out of the gate so the public can have an accurate read on jobs progress.

492 Both unemployment and inflation reporting needs to be fixed to be more accurate, and that should be right out of the box. A report of the last, say, 2 years of proper numbers to set the stage would be good.

505 A few small changes would make a gigantic difference for the economy right off the bat. Rolling back the EPA, blocking Obamacare until it can be dealt with by congress, and making it clear this administration is not the bitter enemy of business would unleash all those companies too afraid to invest and hire but waiting for a hope. Just Romney winning in November would make a big difference there, really. I'd expect a big time Black Friday and Christmas shopping season with a change at the Oval Office.
By Christmas 2013, the economy should be turned around... assuming no more Democrat-planted bombs go off in the mean time. But the work is just beginning then.

If this was Ronald Reagan II or some heavy duty conservative, yeah. WIn by 15% of the popular vote, and NO states for Obama. Crush them and watch the news guys shoot themselves on camera.
But with Mitt Romney? He's not the guy. 525 By Christmas 2013, the economy should be turned around..

A lot of the engine of job creation has been destroyed outright though...not slowed down and capable of ramping again , destroyed, gone, kaput, sold off for scrap, employees and long term wisdom and institutional knowledge thrown to the wind.  Companies that had been around for 30-50 years and employed hundreds/thousands of people are just gone.  Business owners are packing it in and retiring in droves.

It takes decades to recreate the business infrastructure that has been totally vaporized by this depression...and we won't have a world war to spur it along this time, nor will we have the "last man standing" effect from winning WWII to keep it going.

Posted by: fluffy at August 28, 2012 10:13 PM (z9HTb)

534 That's all true, but there are a lot of companies sitting on a lot of capital right now, waiting for a change so its safe to start up again. Its almost like the whole business community across the nation is holding its breath hoping the monster won't leap out of the graveyard as they tiptoe past. They have the resources to do more, but feel they dare not open themselves up to total collapse.
With a change at the top, that all changes too. I'm not saying we'll dig out of the hole overnight, but superficially at least, hiring would start again, unemployment would start to drop, and even the household worth might start climbing again.
You're right that things got messed up awfully bad, but we can turn it around pretty quickly, given the right atmosphere.
My problem is its all for nothing unless we get the debt turned around and the government backed off. It will just lead us to another crash in about 10 years or less, and probably a worse one. Ever since the great depression the US has gone from boom to bust every decade or so almost exactly on schedule. That's somewhat due to cyclical nature of a free market, but its also due to businesses being nailed by an ever increasing and powerful government, finding a way around it, getting nailed, staggering to its feet...
That has to change because every time they get up, they get knocked down harder. This time many of them never got back up.
But I'd argue a lot of the businesses, the old ones that went down for the count this time... were businesses due to fold anyway because of the change in the market. Montgomery Wards, places like that were great in the old days but with the internet the old mall/anchor store system just doesn't make sense any more.

"422 I can't figure out why "you didn't build that" is hurting Obama when all his previous radically socialist cant he's puked out didn't matter at all before."

I think it's two things.

First, it wasn't as obvious last time.  You shrug off a comment like the "Share the wealth" Joe the Plumber moment, dismissing it as "it's nice to share".  Most people don't know enough about politics to recognize that as a slogan for socialism. They apparently still don't recognize "You didn't build that" as the standard rationalization of the kleptomaniacal socialist whose making an excuse for nationalizing the businesses he's talking about, but they CAN recognize it as insulting and un-American.

Second, the hysteria over the so-called "first black President" has finally calmed down.  He hasn't lived up to most of what he promised, that everybody voted for - and I mean the EASY stuff that he has complete control over, like bipartisanship and transparency - and everybody's sick of waiting for the economy and employment to bounce back.  They're more willing to see things that are critical.

People probably don't recognize his class warfare rhetoric as standard marxist fare, either, but many are probably at least looking upon it as finger-pointing.  Another example would be his talking about more GM-style bailouts.  They don't recognize Obama's satisfation with having partially-nationalized a large industry, and his thirst for doing more of it, but they don't see why he would want to be doing more bailouts, when no ther major employers are in big trouble right now.

537 #527: That's another concern. I've been thinking much the same thing on foreign policy. We can make all the deals we want, but sooner or later a Democrat will be elected President, and he'll undo it all in the blink of an eye. Why would any foreign allies trust us in the long term after Obama?

Same with our business community. You can get a business started, and get it roaring in a Republican administration, but then a Democrat gets elected and your best option is to pack it in.

538 Tueday marked the day our US debt exceeded $16 trillion. It took less than a year to get from $15 trillion. The current ceiling is $16.394 trillion, a point we are likely to reach before Nov. 6th.

eh I am sure SCOAMF and Turbo Tax Timmah will use every accounting gimmick they can to mask the spending until after the election

539 I had to unscrew the entire back panel of the thing

Pro Trick: Do that once more.  This time take a metal cutting hole saw or saber saw with a metal blade and cut an access hole in the cover.  You can get a blank 4" electrical box cover (octagon or square would work fine) at Home Depot for a buck or so that can be used as an access hole cover.

Now all you need to do is loosen the cover screws, slide it over, toss the pellets in, then slide the cover back and retighten the sheet metal screws you're screwing it down with.  Some external foam insulation glued to the cover can be used to maintain the insulation integrity.

If you want to be able to aim and distribute the pellets around a bit, just shove a short length of PVC pipe through the hole and use it to aim the pellets.

542 Why would any foreign allies trust us in the long term after Obama?

They shouldn't and they won't.  Over the past 100 years the USA has proven itself to be a very unreliable ally due to the nature of its ever changing presidency and retard congresses.

Anyone who relies on the USA doing something is a fool unless its a very short term thing that only spans one administration.   I think half the problems in south america these days are because they took the Vietnam lesson to heart and realized they simply can't trust the USA.

548 530 lol, are you guys *serious* on unemployment numbers? did you bother thinking it through, or are you just repeating something you heard somewhere? hopefully, it's the latter, so you'd have an excuse.

first of all, u-6, or whatever you want to use, hasn't been the official measure of unemployment in this country EVER, and it isn't even tracked anymore tmk. u3 tracks "jobs progress" well enough, and nfp is as accurate a picture for anyone who wants more resolved data as is publically available.

furthermore, no republican needs to be associated with either the confusion or the drop in national economic morale that would be associated with a switch to reporting u6 as the primary number. low-information voters (read: almost everyone in the country) would probably end up associating obama's u3 numbers with romney's u6, and even if the economy improves significantly under romney such that the figures become comparable, that isn't a comparison that we win on, by any means.

higher-information voters won't see the benefit in switching to such a number when it doesn't actually provide any further information that isn't easily accessible, and they may even, in the worst case, think romney is some sort of petulant permanent politician running a ridiculous republican rehash of the "blame bush" bullshit.

(>.> butterflys are making me crazy is why)

voters are tired of negativity and blame-shifting, and aren't likely to respond well to romney's decidedly negative focus on u6.

the highest-information voters -- those who know that the government has NEVER used u6 (and doesn't even officially publish it anymore) -- are likely to have similar reactions to fairly-informed voters who don't really understand all the different economic indicators as well: they're likely to wonder why romney has decided to start publishing a bleaker picture of the economy, using the hardest-core unemployment figure he can scrounge up (or at least harder-core figures than those used by every government in history that has published such numbers). especially since romney's campaign is running on a fairly-positive message of "putting america back to work", any Big News Move that emphasises the more negative aspects of our economic stagnation would seem to be retrospectively incongruent with the tenor of his campaign.

one doesn't have to be a doomsayer to paint a realistically bleak picture of our country's dire fiscal situation.

if micheal savage or mark levin or some other radio crazy is bleating about this issue, you ought to call in and set him straight. if, otherwise, you came up with it on your own...well, *surely* you just didn't think it through?

Posted by: jimi ray at August 29, 2012 02:09 AM (79EF9)

No, I have no idea if Savage or Levin are talking about it, but most business commentators and financial networks are talking about U6. We in the business world don't really give a shit what Rachel Maddow or the esteemed businessman Al Sharpton think about the economy, because frankly they are idiots. We care about the numbers behind the numbers. We need information on what the real strength of the economy is, and sunshine, it isn't strong.   Why do we use the U6 numbers, because that was what the libs decided to use when Bush was President, and U3 was in the 4's, so they kept pushing that real unemployment was above that.

When you get outside of the liberal enclaves in the tony sections of cities, you can see that people are hurting. Try going to a WalMart, and in the parking lot you will see all kinds of BMW's, Mercedes and Range Rovers. People know the economy is in the shitter, and the only ones who say all is well are too busy giving fellatio to the SCOAMF.

550 In an eerie postscript to the cold war, American gun enthusiasts have been buying Kalashnikov rifles and shotguns by the tens of thousands, helping the Russian arms manufacturer stay afloat in a global market oversaturated with its AK-47s, long the weapon of choice among the world's insurgents and armies. American sales of single-shot civilian versions of the Kalashnikov rose by 50 percent last year among buyers impressed with the automatic model's lethal accuracy in the world's trouble spots. Not reading any of the other comments: 1. Kalashnikov Shotguns? 2. Single shot? 3. Buying them by the tens of thousands? 4. The AK, for all of it's virtues, is not that accurate. My M-2, er,... um... M-1 .30 Carbines are more accurate. For all of it's faults, the M-16 family is more accurate.

@537

I was going to say roughly the same thing.

There is an unimaginable amount of capital, just screaming to be invested, and the really mind-boggling thing about it is that the US ia STILL the best game in town.

It wouldn't even take until November.  If Romney pulls ahead in the polls significantly, even THAT would be enough to give investors that confidence that they can invest their money in businesses without undo worry about the government coming in and either destroying it, or stealing their profits.  The economy has been dying to unleash a real recovery for a long time now.

As to the destruction to date, the new economy is probably not so dependent on the stuff that be lost.  My main worry would be getting the entrepreneurs past their PTSD.

557 Vietnam snipers (including Carlos Hathcock) put scopes on them, converted them to single-fire, and used them as sniper rifles (on occasion). Also the sighting guns for artillery (also .50 cal, but not M2s). True. They did use the M-2HB in this capacity on occasion. The butterfly trigger is easily manipulated for single shot. Hathcock rigged a pistol grip mechanism to make it semi-auto. They used to pull those .50 spotting rifles off of the 106MM Recoiless. My old, grizzled, extraordinarily salty Gunny said they pulled a few off of ONTOS.

566 The biggest challenge we face is government interference in the markets leading to misallocation of resources.

This manifests in a wide variety of ways. For instance, there is talk of "tort reform" in medicine....but it's not that excess and obscene tort awards popped out of nowhere -- it has been a clear government policy to run the court system like a lottery, where anyone aggrieved gets to spin the wheel to see if they "get lucky" and extract millions from a business. Under EMTALA, you can spin the wheel again -- if you're a pregnant drunk illegal alien on meth and can stumble across our porous borders, hospitals cannot deny your infant care that can run to a couple of million dollars. Under the Community Reinvestment Act, banks have to disregard factors that change the possibility of actually getting repaid when they make loans.

In all these cases, and thousands more, real resources.....real time and money and equipment and people.....are diverted from where they could do the most good into government-sanctioned clusterfucks. And then the bureaucrats and statists scratch their asses and wonder why real work isn't getting done so they can tax the crap out of it.

The M-16 series, with practice, is not too bad at all. One can get quite good with it on full auto given a stable body position. The M-2 Carbine is similar, but has a very high rate of fire. Magazine jams are a bit of a problem with it. The Thompson takes an expert to blast away on full auto accurately, but it's a fucking BLAST. I love that weapon. Heavy, but puts people down permanently. Pre MP-5 and the other ultra-moderns, the Swedish K (9MM ......yawn) was seriously controllable, I'm sure due mostly to the pussy 9MM round. Smith and Wesson had one around that time (late Vietnam) that was very good, but limited issue. Surprisingly, the M-3 Grease Gun (A1) is not too bad, but they are all very worn out.

According to the police, there is now one gun for every 14th person in the country - totaling 700,000 legally-held guns.

U3 is fake and has always been fake.  Its based on unreliable survey data and a broken business creation/extinction model that never worked.  It has no basis whatsoever in reality because no hard data is used at any point in its calculation, which makes it subject to the whims of whatever regime is in power.

We need a metric not subject to political manipulation that is based on hard data.

If you prefer fiction over non-fiction, then stick with U3.

Geez, the media is treating a TS the same way a hooker goes down on a politician.

Doesn't this happen every year?

The topless ginger looked out of place in that crowd. She was waaaayyyy to hot (I have a weakness for red heads). They must have rented her.

603 Holy?! I think the reporter on Fox, Phil Keatimg, who is on the scene for the storm is drunk. Very slurred speech.

604 553? "When you get outside of the liberal enclaves in the tony sections of cities, you can see that people are hurting. Try going to a WalMart, and in the parking lot you will see all kinds of BMW's, Mercedes and Range Rovers. People know the economy is in the shitter, and the only ones who say all is well are too busy giving fellatio to the SCOAMF. Posted by: MrCaniac " Yep. First I saw the pawn shops going out of business- then the liquor stores.

606 Thanks for the link on the Milne Bay post AoS.
Our Diggers did a sterling job there, and we're rightly proud of them. Or would be if we actually knew about Milne Bay. A lot of us still don't.

612 435 The last thing I want is for Romney to have some massive landslide though, what's his mandate then? Don't be Obama? Its not like he's promoting a strongly conservative agenda.

In '08 Romney was the "conservative" candidate and favored by many on the right.  I've been a Romney supporter for a long time and I am shocked that there is still this leftover BS from the primaries.   Mitt has been moving openly right for a long time.  I suspect he has always had a conservative heart - got love a kid who shaves the head of hippie student, and in college protested the protesters.

With that said - Mitt crushing Obama would send a HUGE message.  Not just that conservatism is on the ascendency, but that America hates that out of the closet socialist/commie.  Moving left is not the way we want to go.  BUT NOOO you don't want a big win, you want a tiny win - because why?  Mitt is not good enough... you fell for the propaganda during the primaries about who Mitt really is.
