Like Lying Husband, Like Dishonest Wife

Remember Scott Beauchamp, the soldier in Iraq who published a diary, "Shock Troops", in The New Republic and then was found to have made almost everything up?

Okay do you remember that his wife, Elspeth Reeve, also just happened to work for TNR (as a reporter and a fact checker(!) until it became clear that her husband was fabulist)?

Well she's still kicking around - now at The Atlantic Wire - and apparently just as reliable as her husband. Here is her account of a recent statement by John Boehner:

House Speaker John Boehner is the most prominent Republican to admit, out loud, that his party's strategy for winning in November doesn't suppose that the GOP can win over some black and Latino voters, but hoping they won't vote at all.

But here's what he actually said:

What about those Latino and African American voters that polls show voting against the GOP by record margins? Republican have found a great way to "recruit" more of them than usual - or at least keep them away from the polls. It's called the economy.

"This election is about economics," Boehner said. "These groups have been hit the hardest. They may not show up and vote for our candidate but I'd suggest to you they won't show up and vote for the president either."

Well sure - those are exactly the same. In the bizarro world. Here they're just proof that dishonest hacks do flock together - and will always find a home in the MSM.

Obama - An American Tory President?

Okay here I think WRM for once gets something fundamentally wrong (one giveaway is that the idea came from Andrew Sullivan's brain). Clearly he doesn't truly understand Obama's nature:

But optics aside, Sullivan is right, I think, that President Obama is in many ways the Tory candidate in this election and a small 'c' conservative. He wants to preserve the status quo in the United States: the Great Society and the New Deal. He wants to push them along incrementally (that's what the health care program is about) and he wants to fight attempts to roll the welfare state back (which explains his decision to allow states to junk the Clinton welfare reforms).

Like the classic British Tory, our current President believes in a strong state that advances a moral agenda for the nation, collective national guidance through the Great and the Good, and he is an instinctive believer in compromise and "one nation" solidarity between the rich and the poor.

Um that doesn't sound like the President Obama *I* know. Is someone now ghost-writing for WRM? Should we request a drug test?

A Slogan To Retire, From Both Parties

Having thought about it I'd have to agree - we use this phrase freely here but in most places it's a prelude to civil war or genocide.

Please retire the slogan "We want (It's time to take) our country back."

It's un-American. Who is the "we" in this formulation? Who will we be taking it back from? Do we really think any group or team can own America in such a way that the country no longer belongs to other groups?

"Take our country back" is the type of construct you'd expect to hear in a tribal, riven state like Serbia. It's not fitting for America.

I don't know who started this ugly trope, but both parties use it these days and it's time to stop.

Saint Pancake's Parents Get Nothing

An Israeli court has ruled - reasonably - that lying down in front of bulldozer is a self-inflicted accident.

An Israeli court on Monday rejected a lawsuit brought against the military by the parents of a U.S. activist crushed to death in 2003 by an army bulldozer as she tried to block its path in the Gaza Strip, ruling the army was not at fault for her death.

The bulldozer driver has said he didn't see 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist who opposed the military's demolition of Palestinian homes. The military deemed her March 2003 death to be accidental, but Corrie's parents were not satisfied by the army investigation and filed a civil lawsuit two years later.

Explaining the district court's ruling, judge Oded Gershon said Corrie "put herself in a dangerous situation" and called her death "the result of an accident she brought upon herself." He said the military conducted a proper investigation, and rejected the Corrie family's request for a symbolic $1 in damages and legal expenses.

How The Apollo Astronauts Insured Themselves

Since normal life insurance was unavailable to them the Apollo astronauts with NASA's assistance created their own insurance in the form of signed first day covers:

But without a traditional life insurance policy, how could that be possible?

The answer was provided by NASA in the form of 'Insurance Covers', as seen here, a number of which were given to every crew member and subsequently signed by every astronaut involved, as close to launch as possible. Its value would instantly be high, but would no doubt sky-rocket (no pun intended) should the astronauts never return; the deceased's surviving family then at least safe in the knowledge that in future they could cash-in their makeshift insurance policy if required.

Luckily for all involved, the Insurance Covers were never needed and instead they now exchange hands for relatively modest prices amongst collectors. The practice continued from Apollo 11 through to Apollo 16.

Oh Noes: Calorie Restriction Doesn't Extend the Lifespan of Monkeys

So it probably won't work for us either.  Which means all the scientists starving themselves have some catching up to do.

For 25 years, the rhesus monkeys were kept semi-starved, lean and hungry. The males' weights were so low they were the equivalent of a 6-foot-tall man who tipped the scales at just 120 to 133 pounds. The hope was that if the monkeys lived longer, healthier lives by eating a lot less, then maybe people, their evolutionary cousins, would too. Some scientists, anticipating such benefits, began severely restricting their own diets.

The results of this major, long-awaited study, which began in 1987, are finally in. But it did not bring the vindication calorie restriction enthusiasts had anticipated. It turns out the skinny monkeys did not live any longer than those kept at more normal weights. Some lab test results improved, but only in monkeys that were put on the diet when they were old. The causes of death - cancer, heart disease - were the same in both the underfed and the normally fed monkeys.

This Probably Won't End Well

Look fire, speaking, and metal-working are about all we have over the apes - let's not be giving away one of the big three here without getting something worthwhile in return.

14 In any case, Sullivan is right that Obama is much more in touch with the mainstream of modern British political and social thought than is Romney. What he needs to reflect on is whether or not that is a good thing.
***
Europe is indeed farther down the socialist road then we - and probably terminally so. As, unfortunately we may be as well (time will tell).

This is one serious problem with "moderate" analysis of Obama. The man is not slightly more liberal then the average American, he is a full on socialist. He has been the most thoroughly leftwing ideological president...ever.

Of course the larger issue is that Romney would fit into the current British political elite just as well as Obama would.

53 Sorry, we really do need to keep the 'take the country back' slogan.  Because there are two utterly incompatible political philosophies warring for control.  For want of better phrases (oh hell, who am I fooling, I love the formulation) lets call them 'Progressive' and 'American.'  You can't really compromise between the two, that gets you the crap we have now where things go to hell only slower than outright Socialism.

Right now 'compromise' is defined as our side agreeing with their side.  Screw that.  Lets let THEM compromise for a change... defined exactly the same way.  I.e. we win, they lose.

If there is a year to run a "fark off State Media" type campaign this is it.

You know what I would love to see a Republican do one of these days - the next time you get a question like, "Do you hate raped women a lot or a little?"

Respond with, "Do you know what percent of the populace is unemployed in Obama's America?" When you get the official, BS figure, school the talking head on U-6s numbers, and then add, "Shouldn't you be covering important things in this election instead of following the lead of Entertainment Tonight and People?"

Via AP (h/t Samuel Keck in Tip Line) A three-judge panel in Florida has ruled that a former neighborhood watch leader charged in the fatal shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin should be granted a new judge in his case. FloridaÂ’s Fifth District Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday that Judge Kenneth Lester should enter a motion to disqualify himself in George ZimmermanÂ’s second-degree murder case. ZimmermanÂ’s attorney Mark OÂ’Mara asked the court earlier this month to overturn a previous ruling by Lester not to leave the case. One of the three judges dissented in the ruling.

234 Having thought about it I'd have to agree - we use this phrase freely here but in most places it's a prelude to civil war or genocide. In Fiji a bunch of assholes walked in one day a few years back and took over the government. They are still there. Most Fijians want their Country back. Taking the Country back is quite correct in some instances. In America a minority of Communist/Socialist?Fascist leaning assholes have taken power with help from a sympathetic lying press that holds no position and numbers, numerically, a tiny few. But for God's sake don't use that "take back.." phrase here because it really doesn't make complete academic sense in a democratic sort of way or something.

Wow. He just exceeds all expectations of tin-foilness, doesn't he?

I was really glad to see that he's got ads going on his site - the first and most prominent one was for cat litter.  A little sideline pimping litter in case his day job goes pear shaped. So he's got that going for himself, which is nice.

I was glad to see the Cox & Forkum illustration gone (it's been a long time since I've been there).

He's still as bile spewing, hate drenched and invective hurling as you remember. He's stirring the masses about the alleged comments to a CNN cameraman, and commentators are comparing the GOP to Nazis and supremacists as a result. They're also claiming CNN is 'protecting' the identity of the perps because they are 'afraid'. Get that? MSM is afraid of the GOP! Complete-reality-disconnect. It's like being in a bad Total Recall memory.

So spare yourselves, I took one on the chin to-night in the name of investigative reporting so you don't have to.

Now to burn all my protective gear and shower... again.

Blech. What a vile man he turned out to be.

Sounds like somebody needs some serious schooling on why the infrastructure gets built in the first place and who pays. Important hint: those industrial parks don't happen because some federal bureaucrat thought of it.

There's also the fact that rhesus monkeys, although intelligent, are instinctive animals. They are not human and lack the capacity to rationalize that their 20+ years of suffering were for a greater good and damn well wouldn't get the idea that it might be in their own best interest. 503 When I was a little kid, my brother and I eliminated a huge hornet nest by shooting it full of these rolled paper blowgun darts we used to make and shoot out of 1/2" copper pipe.   The paper darts had an effective range well over 100' and easily penetrated the nest's outer shell at a safe distance

Once it started raining, with the outer shell compromised, the nest fell apart like soggy cardboard and the hornets moved elsewhere.

The paper darts were great fun in school too.  Today, we'd be arrested as terrorists for doing that kinda shit in school.

Can you get the steel screen to completely cover the nest (or completely cover you)? The wasps will really want a big slice of you ... If not, I'd consider buying some netting at Home Depot, and a roll or two of duct tape. Are you sure about using gasoline? Instead, perhaps a bug bomb duct-taped to the entrance ... think of it as forced ventilation. Sounds slightly safer.

"I have a nice large section of steel screen and some heavy leather gloves...I'll trap them and let them taste gasoline. Then comes the fire!"

544 If the mystery guest is Clint Eastwood I guess it would be cool. His current wife and two daughters recently participated in a reality show about their life which was awful. Wife is a band promoter, girls are just plain awful. Kardashians without the porno tape. During the show one daughter set fire to a 100,000,000 dollar Birkin bag by Hermes for "art". Not well received. Show was dropped after a couple episodes altho they have more in the can. Hollywood is going to kill him for this.

All nations in currency crisis try to keep money from leaving.  Some states, like CA already extract an ~10% exit tax on people moving out of the state with any appreciable assets.  The only way to leave CA whole is to cash out in state, then physically drive the cash out using low traffic roads without huge checkpoints.

Even then you gotta be careful about redepositing it somewhere else and spread it out over time.

I admit I wanted to write about this the other night. I got so fed up with the open hatred from these idiots, who love to crow how "tolerant" they are, that I actually wrot to the female (her name is Sasha Stone), 'put another line of coke up your nose and STFU.' I increasingly feel Joe McCarthy had the right idea and would be better remembered if he'd kept sober. Hollywood makes out the black list as the most horrible thing that ever happened to anybody but neglects to mention the black list is alive and well. It's just used against conservatives instead of commies.

Obviously, the first time I cried was on Nov. 2, 2008. Went to gyno the next morning. She asked if I had watched the election returns the previous evening. Told her, "No, I couldn't take it." To which she replied (aghast), "oh, you must have voted for McCain!" Never went back. Scrunt!

583 Well, I'm headed back up into my attic.  This job of wiring the whole Purp-crib for phone/LAN/CATV everywhere has been a ball buster.  I'm doing a neat, tidy, unobtrusive job in the attic, which takes a lot more time than tossing cable around like it was spaghetti.

About 12 new phone jacks, LAN/CATV ports, plus the electrical wiring work downstairs to tuck the various switches/routers/TV boxes in out of the way places in closets where there were no receptacles.  I want to be able to plunk a All-in-one LAN printer down anywhere without needing extension cords, power strips or anything more than a 5' Cat5 patch cord.

594 Hollywood as a power center for the entertainment business is living on borrowed time. Like the Big Six book publishers they are being overtaken by new technology they cannot control.

Location shots are going out of state at an accelerating rate. More and more productions have their primary stages outside the TMZ if they're still in Los Angeles County at all. (Several major TV shows like NCIS and CSI are produced just a few miles from where I live in Castaic. There is a big below the line community locally.)

The cost of capturing very high quality images is dropping like a rock. The level of equipment you can own for less than $50K is amazing and the prices just keep dropping. Even the HDCams you can get for a few hundred bucks are amazing value. That is just one piece of the equation but it is a big indicator.

The sooner Hollywood's power is dissipated the better for everyone, except some assholes in Hollywood.

604 epobirs: exactly, which feeds into (for better or worse) my desire to make a movie. With creativity, flexibility and elbow grease, you can make something that's barely distinguishable from a big-budget studio pic with today's digital filmmaking and editing equipment. Plus, more and more editing and SFX are do-able on affordable high-end PCs.

And, there's NO industry I'd like to see suffer and wither in terms of power and prestige faster than Hollywood. I would LOVE to see a Romney admin literally a$$-rape 'em with the IRS for the decades of billions they've hidden, all while whining about taxation (among other stupid pet whines) when it's more than an open secret that most of their "success stories" are the most cocooned, entitled idiots on the planet.

Sure, there's still talent there, but Hollywood wants to live forever in the 1955-1975 era, big-budget, star-turn, sniffing-coke-off-a-supermodel's-belly bubble forever, and that world is long gone, except for the moguls and "stars" (hi, Lindsay Lohan!) who are still trying to live that way.

speeches don't matter.

but republicans going to win cuz of economy, Obamacare, and obama's problems with catholic church, etc.

634 Yes, some of us were excited after the speeches in 2008. There are many reasons that Obama won and McCain lost. I won't rehash them here.

But there are major differences today. Obama has a record now..a disastrous one. Biden is increasingly becoming a liability, and Obama is stuck with him. Romney may not be everyone's favorite candidate, but it's quite obvious that he has the fire in the belly that McCain lacked. And as much as I liked Palin, the MSM pretty easily turned her into a joke. Good luck doing that with Ryan. Romney will now be able to unleash the bank account. And finally, the DNC has all the hallmarks of an impending train wreck.

Yep, there's still plenty of time. Winston Wolf rule in full effect. But it ain't 2008 anymore.

I had tagged Palin as someone to watch the May before she was selected by McCain. I was thrilled when she became the VP nom, and appalled by the relentless MSM character assassination.

I'm not buying into the "dead and buried" meme, though. She triaged her problems effectively, doing "the unthinkable" when necessary. She's backed a number of candidates who successfully overturned the status quo and conventional wisdom. She's spent the downtime sharpening her sword. And it's not like she's obviously past her "sell-by date" like Cankles. I'd suspect that we'll see Palin on the national stage again.

What? Palin won the debate with Biden and she did well in her convention speech.    She was also picked b/c she was popular with Democrats in Alaska too prior to being picked, she was like 80 plus approval.   She fits in well with McCain's more populist message at times.

She flubbed the Couric interview but i don't think most people cared about that except democrats.

652 The whole "I can see Russia from my house" nonsense started during the campaign. As did the weekly Tina Fey SNL mockery.

I think that it was almost inevitable that Obama (or Hillary) was going to win in 2008, Palin or not.

Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at August 30, 2012 12:04 AM (yJYwC)

653

Palin's' biggest obstacles are the fact she resigned, she's done things construed as "reality shows", she's on tv alot and that plays into the celebrity thing, and then she sort of looked like a tease when the primaries started up with the bus tour that seemed to have no real purpse.    She seems to play into all the negative talking points used again her.

I think she should have had a political future but her choices made that unlikely.

Posted by: Coward Robert Ford at August 30, 2012 12:05 AM (/w5Wy)

654

the reality is it's better to be a conventional politician if you want to win elections than an unconventional one.   Her advisers advised her to be this unconventional politician and i thin that was the big mistake.

can you think of any republican nominee who was not conventional.  Even Reagan was pretty conventional, although conservative.

Posted by: Coward Robert Ford at August 30, 2012 12:07 AM (/w5Wy)

655

well Palin ahd a point about the ethics compalints she was bombarded with in Alaska that she had to defend herself against with her own money.

My theory is that after getting a taste of national politics, Alaska politics just seemed kinf o mundane and boring to her.   She likes being a national player and I think she's ok just being a grassroots kind of leader on a national level.

I don't care about her other endeavors, personally.  She's got to earn a living too and she has people whio will read her books.

Take a look at what it does and tell me 1/2 of that shit isn't top priority.  If the republic is to survive, Interior is going to be one of the major players in enabling us to earn our way out of this economic mess.   Get rid of the foot draggers in Interior and we'll be selling the world energy and raw materials as well as supplying our own.

Thats what is called democratic tyranny. Its a stupid way of thinking, and it has lead empires to collapse before. I live in a small country in Europe, propably your idea of hell (Norway) and up here we have learned that that way of thinking usualy ends up with one guy caving the other guys head with an axe. The majority should decide the framework, but the minority should be allowed as much room as possible. And there must be civil communication. Otherwise it all falls apart.

Eric Holders' boss Choom King is best buds with a guy who wanted 25 million capitalists killed "to get the point across".  I take such things seriously.  That sought after body count gives me at least the moral high ground you give Saint Pancake, who oddly enough is a product of Bambi backers.

The leftoids are trying to enslave my nation through hyperregulation and use the EPA and DoE as agents for evangelical moonbats to thwart economic recovery to keep the poor poor and hurt the middle to allow the rich to be devoured one day soon.

The time for negotiating anything other than their metaphorical political last supper is long past.

698 (Damn, you should have an edit function here, Ace)

Yea, Ed Anger, Norwegian SF has joined the Talebans. Sorry to say, we have disrupted NATO and joined the Haqquani network. Happy hunting.

699 Wasn't that a Cole Porter song? Rachel Corrie got home last night and put a bulldozer through her head

700 Sven, You write his:
"The leftoids are trying to enslave my nation through hyperregulation and use the EPA and DoE as agents for evangelical moonbats to thwart economic recovery to keep the poor poor and hurt the middle to allow the rich to be devoured one day soon."

In my best proper english:
May I say, in the spirit of the rough and tumble jocular tone of this netsite that this is just not true? Check up on the amount of the taxburden that rich people are carrying now compared to the 50s. The whole crack of -08 should learn us somthing about fiscal responsibility, but no party is better than another in the US. You republicans want to not face the need to cut the military (and war with Iran!) while the democrats wont face the need to cut buerocracy. So its a gridlock, and youre all getting fcked by capitalists who earn money from the Taxes.

701 704 Fnord,

There was nothing unsustainable about our spending in 2005 other than entitlements needing fixed and removed form the cake.

You don't get to "correct me" on the influence of the Gaia cult when one of Ogabe's first actions was giving Van Jones a 68 Billion dollar "walking around money fund" for venture socialism in "green jobs"....

Gangrene jobs more likely.

703 706 lolwut,

Yeah it is sorta low hanging fruit....

the US debt mess can best be solved by becoming an energy exporter again and building refineries for shale.

704 Ah, youre down to nick-stealing, that last one wasnt me.

Seriously folks, I thought that was the inteligent analysis of the clever Tea Party people, that the system is the problem, not wich part of it is accentuated. The whole system of privileges and old party hacks and chains of friendship has become like a dinosaur .

Now, we can discuss ways forward or we can all hate each other and never communicate except through napalm. We in Norway just had us a anti-islam terrorist. It made us all adults when it came to communication.

707 OK, trying to read your english, I decipher that BAM! may be Obama? But what is occutards? Please elucidate.

708 711 Fnord,

Really?

DoJ is openly helping the Occupy Wall Street crowd at the RNC gathering and you don't know what the combination of occupy and retards denotes?

Allow me to reiterate, this DoJ led by Eric Holder working for Barack Obama has armed mexican drug cartels to undermine our liberty, given black Ku Klux Klansman knock offs a free pass to call for murder, and is now aiding anarchists in political warfare using federal assets and you admonish US to "calm down and be reaosnable".....

"okay"

712 This is the playground that St Pancake chose to go play in: From the official summary of the court’s verdict: ” During the relevant period of time, the “Philadelphi Corridor” was the site of daily warfare, i.e. daily gunfire by snipers, missile fire and IED explosions directed at the IDF forces. During this period, unceasing efforts were made to kidnap IDF soldiers. Only soldiers who were in combat units fought in the region.” “According to the notes made in the IDF records, from September 2000 to the date of the incident that is the focus of this lawsuit (March 16, 2003), nearly 6,000 grenades had been thrown at IDF forces in the Corridor; there had been approximately 1,400 incidents of gunfire; and there were more than 40 occurrences of mortar fire. These aforementioned events led to the injury and death of many Israelis.” “The United States government issued a travel warning on March 16, 2003 to warn American citizens against visiting the Gaza Strip area or the West Bank.” “During the period pertinent to this case, there was a military directive in force declaring the “Philadelphi Corridor” a “closed military area” and forbidding the entry of civilians.” Flapjack was not misguided. Her evil actions were deliberate.
