The GOP: Forever Lurching Right?

At least according to the NYT which declares the 2012 Republican platform to be the most extreme ever especially compared to the 1980 platform. But of course if you actually read them, there's almost no difference on the issues.

While the 1980 platform may have been different from the 2012 platform in tone and detail, that may have had more to do with the format of platforms at the time, which has evolved since. Over the years, the GOP platform has been quite consistent on the issues, particularly abortion. Obviously there will be minor differences from year to year, but there's little evidence for the notion that the Republican platform has lurched far to the right over the last 32 years. The only way to argue otherwise is to cherry-pick quotes and ignore context, as the Times did in its article.

The Obama administration announced strict new vehicle fuel-efficiency standards Tuesday, requiring that the U.S. auto fleet average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, an uncontroversial move that, unlike other administration energy policies, was endorsed by industry and environmentalists alike.

The new rules, announced by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa P. Jackson, expand on existing standards requiring American-made cars and light trucks to average 34.5 mpg by 2016. They will significantly cut U.S. oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by the time they are fully implemented, according to the EPA.

Well fame, money, looks and too much free time are the devil's premier R&D laboratory.

Frankly, this is how I think of Prince Harry:  He's an Australian sheep dog, and perhaps with the same level of narrow intelligence:

Australian sheep dogs are wonderful animals, provided that you keep them busy doing the task for which they are born.  If you do not keep an Australian sheep dog busy, it becomes destructive, both to itself and to its environment.  It will chew up a house, break its teeth on the cages meant to control it, worry its skin to death (truly), etc.  Give the dog a job, though, and it just chugs along cheerily.

Prince Harry is exactly the same.  He loves the military and, from everything I've heard, when he's on duty, he's good at his job.  Keep him busy, and he's happy and productive.  Once the down time starts, though, Katy bar the door.  That's a boy who's going to get himself in trouble - especially because trouble, in the form of wine, women, and song, finds him so easily.

Chinese dude and definite Stevie Wonder fan Hu Seng wanted to show his girlfriend how much he loved her, so he mailed himself to her. The only problem? When his girlfriend finally received the package, Hu Seng had passed out from lack of oxygen.

The Trabant might meet CAFE standards since usually only one of the four nominal cylinders was actually firing. Smog standards are another issue though, since they smoked badly when Ivan drove it home the first time.

I'm sick of these phony patriots on our side demanding surrender in Afghanistan. We are in Afghanistan because Afghanistan was used as a base of operations for terrorists during the Taliban's rule. This led to 9/11 and 9 out 10 Americans approved using force to eliminate that safe haven, including 75% who said they would support it even if 5,000 Americans died. This policy has been a complete success. There have been no major terrorist attacks against this country since 2001. If our troops were withdrawn, the terrorists would be back in business just like before, except they would have the additional prestige of having defeated and demoralized the world's sole superpower. Everyone who died in both 9/11 and the subsequent war would literally have died in vain. But what do I know. Apparently the highest form of patriotism on the right today is trashing the current President at all cost, just like the left with Bush. And believe me, he deserves criticism but too often that legitimate criticism is just being used as a pretext by people who want us to lose the war.

Haha! In all fairness, it's good to hear they are trying to enforce compliance.

Having helped a bit with clinical research, I can tell you getting valid data out of self-reporting is a black art. It's not as easy as it sounds and as much as we conservatives like to fuck with pollsters, having solid numbers are going to be key as the guys in Boston start to turn Chicago into 1945 Dresden.

Molecular work is much nicer, your subjects don't try to fuck with you as much. :-)

364 I live in Okinawa so I've just now seen the speeches of Eastwood, Rubio, and Romney. Both Rubio and Romney were excellent. In fact, I think only Ryan's speech surpassed Rubio's during the convention. I think the GOP was smart in making Rubio the guy who introduced Romney instead of making him keynote. Simple fact - more people saw his speech as opposed to Cristie's (which was way too self-centered IMO).

I said Romney's was "excellent", not because it was a truly incredible speech (it was decent) but because it accomplished exactly what it needed to do - bring him down to earth. The only thing Obama has over Romney is the likability gap. It'll be fun watching that disappear in the upcoming week.

Now, as for Eastwood's speech...not so hot in my opinion. In fact, I stopped watching after a few minutes as it seemed he was rambling incoherently. To those who watched the whole thing, did it get better? I sure as hell hope so.

371 I thought Eastwood was great. He was funny, informal, and kept the crowd entertained.

He was brutal toward jef, covered enough of the conservative points, but also (mostly) hit on the points that even the left and moderates can agree with -- saying he was going to close Guantanamo and giving a timetable for leaving Afghanistan. He was vague enough that no one could disagree with what he was saying (except jef,) and yet made it clear that jef was not up to the task.  Tested and found wanting.

I think the audience here, more so than maybe any of the other speakers, was the moderates and young that may only watch one speech. To them he made it clear that jef was a failure, not such a nice guy, and he needed to find a new line of work. Oh yeah, he started out saying that it was OK to be conservative and that there were a lot more in Hollywood than is apparent.

When he said that 23 millions unemployed Americans made him cry, that "We own this country" and that "politicians are employees of ours", everybody got it. The MFM is going on about it to avoid talking about Rubio and Romney. Was Clint terrible? The JEF tweeted a pic of him in the oval office saying "This chair is taken". Why?
