Mark Wolfe declares in the NYT that he needs to get high in order to really enjoy his children:

I swear I am a more loving, attentive and patient father when I take my medication as prescribed. Perhaps this isn't surprising. You not only notice the subtle color variations in your cat's fur, you stare at them in loving awe for 20 solid minutes.

I submit that this can be enormously salutary to the parent-toddler relationship. Beyond food, shelter and clothing, what do small children need most from their parents? Sustained, loving, participatory attention. Thank you, Doctor.

Today's my 30 birthday.  I realized as I was sitting at work that there are soldiers in the class who were 7 years old when the attacks occured.  In another two years we'll reach about the limit of memory, and after that we'll have soldiers who cannot remember the attacks at all.

Yeah, Alex, I watched it. I think it may have potential. But, being an NBC show will most likely screech uncontrollably off the rails fairly quickly.

 

 

I got into a debate with a couple of guys about whether planes would actually tumble out of the sky in that scenario. I argued that we don't know what caused the power to go out so possibly they could. Plus I think they just did it for visual effect.

I was 8 months pregnant on September 11th. My soon to be 11 year-old knows all about that day. Her dad was in Boston, waiting to fly home. She knows about the attacks, the aftermath. The thing that she cannot imagine: no planes flying, quiet skies.  Interestingly, she, and most of her classmates are badass. When discussing terrorist actions at school, my older child's class talks about understanding, negotiations, blah, blah.. not my little one. Her class talks about tactics, ambush, attack. They have a different outlook - they have to.

I got into a debate with a couple of guys about whether planes would actually tumble out of the sky in that scenario. I argued that we don't know what caused the power to go out so possibly they could. Plus I think they just did it for visual effect.

 

A plane without power is a big glider, so I found the tumbling part silly.  It's possible that something could knock them down, but then you'd expect to see the effects elsewhere as well.

115 If the plane is fly by wire and an inherently unstable design that can fly only because of dozens of minor corrections the avionics make each second, then yes it could easily start tumbling and break apart if avionics control is lost at high speeds.

An inherently stable design wouldn't automatically go unstable.  There's probably mechanical failsafe systems that would neutralize the controls upon total avionics failure...at least that the way I'd design a plane

Actually it'll be sometime next month. Ron's advice is to "get what fits your hand" (which sounded *very* familiar) so I'll try whatever I'm allowed.

 

I was really nervous about asking him for help, if you guess wrong and it turns out the person's a gun hater it can ruin your future interactions, but he'd posted something positive about guns on FaceBook (guess it'  not  *totally*  useless after all). What's funny is,  our  senior pastor is also exLEO, and used to work for the Justice Department, but (according to Ron) Pastor *really* doesn't want anyone carrying in church, whereas Ron carrys most of the time.

 

We did also discussed  getting the kids enrolled in gun safety courses and what it would take to get me a (CCW?) so he knows what my overall plans are.

Steevy, thanks to you too.  Sheesh - sorry, but here's my take on Hillary's statement.  She idiotically - and typically - is so inept she apologizes AGAIN (that's what's implicit in here line about deploring denigration of religion - it's a slightly rephrased echo of both the despicable embassy statement and the despicable embassy tweet - BTW, WTF is an embassy "tweeting" for?).

 

Plus, no surprise that the embassy would disgrace itself with its statement.  There are some OK folks in the State Dept., but it's not exactly an impressive group overall.  And the dominant mindset is pure Beltway clueless.

 

I know, parody has been rendered stale by things done and said every day by US officials (and tolerated by US citizens).  I know, irony is dead.  But what to say about the claim, in both the idiotic embassy statement and the clumsy SecState follow-up, that the US simply adores religious tolerance?  From an administration that, for perhaps the first time in the country's history, is actually materially and aggressively (not to mention contemptuously) railroading a major religious institution in the service of its bizarre and absurd social engineering obsessions (birth control and the papists)?

 

But something on the political fall-out of today's various debacles.  I've likened the ongoing train-wreck of the current administration to velcro - the little hooks of each particular stumble or transgression probably latch onto someone who wasn't already repelled or at least troubled by one the zillion previous outrages. 

 

My model for November is called Coiled Spring.  For diverse reasons, I see a giant landslide in the making, as various loops of the velcro hooked by the endless and varying missteps and atrocities of the non-entity in the WH find expression at one time and place.  Anyway, it's seeming to me that today is another - and significant - velcro hook.   A Carter-esque vibe, reviving and emphasizing a critique that has had some traction all along - the "apology tour" thing.

I know there a few NJ/NY morons here.  If you ever have the chance-make a trip to the West Orange, NJ 9/11 Memorial at Eagle Rock Reservation. it is both beautiful and over whelming.  The open book on the pedestal, the Firemen's boots and Hat, the Police hat-all in bronze- lead you to the retaining wall resurfaced in marble with each and every name, age and country etched along the length - All overlooking the NYC skyline.  I can not go there without feeling the enormity of what was done to us all the way into my soul. it is diffilcult to explain. It is so very peaceful - I know God hears the prayers.

I had a mother duck along side my house sitting on a nest of 5 eggs for a while now and they gotta be ready to hatch any day now.  Today she suddenly disappeared, apparently the victim of some other animal.  She had a lame leg so she wasn't the fastest duck around...

Will one of the other female ducks wandering around the yard notice the babies after they hatch and adopt them, or are they doomed?

Eh, in one of Pournelle's military sci-fi anthologies (I'm pretty sure it was one of the 'There Will be War' books) there was a story where aliens, worried about the rapid technological advance of humanity, 'seeded' the planet with a compound that would prevent high-pressure combustion (ie gunpowder, ICE's, etc) in the hopes that this would retard the growth of humanity. From the context of the story it was set in the 1950's (apparent Korean war soldiers). Didn't work, of course, humanity took another course and developed memetic warfare (not the term used of course) to use against the aliens.


I like the 'Dies the Fire' books.  Who was it that described science fiction as stories with one impossibility and following through the consequences?  epobirs probably knows. Anyway, Stirling does an decent job following that idea over the first few books of the series. It eventually becomes damn close to the pagan 'Left Behind' series though, I'll admit.

That's all that Europe can do. They have stripped their military down to nothing, and they rely on us to do the heavy lifting. France destroying Ivory Coast's air force probably took a few hours, and that is what France's air force can only muster. The Navies of Europe can barely get their ships out of harbor, and when they do, the ships can't do much.


It would be better for us to work with India to put a cork on this Islamic shit rather than hoping that Europe's balls finally drop.

PurpAv, good point about Hizbollah in Venezuela.  Don't forget they also have had a presence in the (somewhat lawless) "triangle" area of southern Brazil bordering Argentina and Paraguay for years, as well.  Not far from Iguacu Falls, which are truly amazing.  Not sure how things are there now, was there in 1985.

 

rabidfox, would be easy to look up (but I'm too lazy), but normally a post like Cairo is NOT a political appointee, if by that you mean a non-career, non-FSO type.  There are certain very senior FSOs who, through various paths, become somewhat like political appointees in that they get sensitive senior posts, and have some sort of association or favor from political factions outside State - but usually it's rather merit-based.  Like using Amb. Negroponte in Baghdad post-CPA.  He'd been in various very hot spots with high political profile before (e.g. Honduras during the contra/Sandinista thing).

Your dad is still quite early on his recovery path.  My dad stroked out maybe 15 years prior to his death and it took 3 years or so, but he got back to a solid 95% and was fully functional except for a few things he said tasted funny that he used to like.  Walking, talking, driving a car, memory/skills, he got it all back.

You dad's brain is busy rewiring/retraining itself right now.  I know its frustrating for him sometimes, but he'll work through it with time.

For those facepalming over the fact that the French responded appropriately to a dust-up in Ivory Coast (formerly a nice place), be advised the French have been very serious and fairly ruthless in Africa when needed.  Likewise, they don't screw around on the intel side.  Very aggressive and good and not that careful.  I refer here to internal and external (they don't have our legal or institutional separation between internal and foreign threat management, though they do have two intel services).  Can't recall it now - was it Bokasa the First in the sorely-missed Central African Empire? - who hung up the phone on Giscard d'Estaing and got straightened out by French paratroops toute suite?

 

Anyway, whatever their reputation based on May 1940 and occupation, the French have generally been extremely tough and pretty competent when it comes to African intel and military matters.  The despicable amorality of some of their foreign policy and the shenanigans of their political class (as with their secret oil deals with Saddam) are really a separate matter.  Their intel side is one to warm the cold ruthless hearts of AoSHQ afficionados.

How many people do you know who like being told what to do? It may sound cliche', and it did to me when I first tried it, but I can assure you it isn't to people who are willing to listen honestly. Secondly, outlets like PJTV, again, I'm NOT here to shill, but we need counter-narrative, quality productions out there and those guys do it hard. How are they funded? With small change subscriptions. Guys like Bill Whittle are fighting as hard as they can. I don't know much, but I know we have change the whole damn information paradigm. Print and television are enemy territory. Kill them off with an alternative. That takes money, attention, and word of mouth (web) advertising for us po' folk.

IllTemperedCur, I can't contest what you say.  I just wanted to point out that France had not tread lightly with assholes in Africa since WWII (and often they have been stomping on people really needing a stomping).  People get caught up in the French surrender-monkey thing and it's fun but not quite accurate.

 

PurpAv, seems to me the Pakistan thing is entirely geography, not Cold War inertia or connections.  Just no other way to sustain even a small operation in Afghanistan.  And as you well know, it's really so bad it's stranger than fiction:  a substantial faction in the Paki intel/military establishment is our very active enemy, not just hosting OBL but of course supporting the Taliban.  But the Afghanistan thinggy is a whole 'nuther long discussion in itself.

He told us that “Islam is a religion of peace.” He allowed both countries to enshrine sharia law in their new constitutions. We also got the TSA. Because of politically correct dogma, we couldn’t single out Muslims for special scrutiny. That would be discriminatory. No, henceforth, our own government would have to treat each and every American as a potential terrorist, up to and including toddlers and old ladies with colostomy bags. I predicted this in an e-mail about a week after 9/11. Bush could have slammed the border shut after 9/11. No better excuse or opportunity ever existed. He didn’t do it because he didn’t want to do it. He was an open-borders internationalist. I was willing to give Bush the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I was being a hothead, and it was better to try it the nice way first. Besides, we couldn’t afford to anger the Saudis, on whom we depend for access to their oil. He openly said that he did not seek “victory”. The rules of engagement became even more restrictive. Afghans who we’ve been training are now turning on us and are killing our troops. Radical Islamists are taking power all over North Africa and the Middle East. They’re now attacking our embassies in Egypt and Libya. By any rational measure, we are losing to the Muslims. How many mosques have been constructed in America and Europe since 9/11? How many new Muslim immigrants? Muslims continue to seek converts among the worst violent sociopathic dregs of society in our prisons. They are rising to influential positions in government security agencies like the FBI. In Europe, native non-Muslims are facing criminal punishment for criticizing Islam and their nations’ immigration policies, as did Mark Steyn in Canada. More than ever, I’m convinced that my first reaction was correct. We should have nuked Mecca on 9/12/01. At the bare minimum we should have dropped nukes on Tora Bora in October 2001. Cork, thanks to you and your son.  And as you surely know, in almost all cases the Marine security detachment's job is not physical security of the embassy perimeter, but security of the classified information and systems (typically involving controlling access to secure sections of the embassy cojmplex).  In Baghdad, for obvious reasons, we had a very augmented detachment at the embassy annex (palace), which DID have a physical security role - but that was an active war zone.  Used to love seeing the squad being relieved from the check-point in front of the palace walking back in near my office, Ma Deuce .50 cal on a shoulder and belts of ammo swinging.  Used to think:  "there's ANOTHER warm-fuzzy-inducing thing I've never seen in my previous desk jobs".

 

Not sure what the deal is in Cairo - but I assume Marines there are primarily in the usual classified-protection role.

 

But Cork your point is key, and hasn't been mentioned much.  No way this sort of thing happens without a galactic fuck-up or de facto connivance of the regime in Cairo.  In all but the most extreme cases, foreign embassies and esp. US embassies do NOT get abused this way without host-government connivance. 

 

And even with the clearly dramatic changes in Egypt the last year, I think it's difficult to over-state the alarming nature of this incident.  Hard to believe the regime can't control this, equally hard to believe they would deliberately allow it.

587 Just checked again...mother duck still gone, eggs still alone.  If there's a duck heaven, I suspect she's there. 

She had a pretty good run.  Even with the gimp leg (broken in some previous attack and healed at an odd angle), she managed to rear probably 15 babies over the past year before something got her.

Years ago, there was a 3-legged gecko that hung by the front door at night.  One leg had been reduced to a stump by something gnawing on it and she was pretty beat up when I first noticed her.  She healed and cranked out a bunch of gecko babies over the next couple of years.  She vanished one day too...

We obviously need Obamacare for animals.

The British did inform us, as a matter of fact.  Further, the British have a policy of not turning over criminals to countries where they are likely to face capitol punishment.  


Even after the invasion of Afghanistan the Brits publicly stated that had they caught Bin Laden they wouldn't release him into US custody without gaurantees that the death penalty would not be pursued.  It was a minor controversey at the time.
