Let There Be Light: The Censored Documentary on Traumatized WWII soldiers
Made by a young John Huston for the Army in 1946:
With no political agenda, and anxious to keep scrupulously to the task he had been given, Huston applied to the letter the principle of objectivity he had followed in the two previous documentaries. For more than three months, he filmed the daily life of former combatants hospitalized at Mason General, a military hospital on Long Island. The courage and sense of sacrifice of these men was clearly portrayed, as the Pentagon had clearly requested. But equally apparent was the fact that some of them were utterly destroyed: their fear, their shame, and their tears showed clearly, as did their contempt for military authorities.
But in 1946, and especially in military psychiatry, the most widely accepted view was that soldiers who became mentally ill were psychologically weak or malingering.
The fact that film showed US Soldiers, not as the glorified heroes the public wanted, but as disabled veterans, meant that the film would be a huge propaganda disaster - likely compounded by the fact that most people saw these conditions as character flaws or shameful faking.
Today the military is much savvier regarding the effects of combat and PTSD is treated as a hazard of prolonged combat itself rather than a character flaw. Statistically any soldier - no matter how strong and well put together - will get PTSD if they're in combat long enough without a break.
It's hard to watch some of these interviews as the soldiers speaking are truly suffering - and their pain is further compounded by the shame of suffering from non-physical 'fake' injuries. And the doctors seem rather harsh and unempathetic to the men in front of them.
Some of the commenters have pointed out that this was how Army psychiatrists of the time were trained to deal with patients and that given the sheer volume of patients and short 8-week treatment program it would have been difficult to have been more personal. Luckily we've come a long way and I hope we treat today's returning troops better.

25-Year-Old Shocked Shocked to Find Out that Taking Out Huge Student Loans Leads to Huge Debt
Katie Brotherton is unhappy:
I attended St. Margaret of York grade school and then matriculated from the reputable Ursuline Academy. After high school, I earned degrees from Miami and Xavier universities. Because of my local education, Cincinnati is more than my hometown - she is the mother who raised me into the woman I am now. I am Cincinnati.
My pursuit in excellent education is rooted in a value system that promotes progressive thought for the betterment of the individual as well as society.
At 25 years old, I have $188,307.22 in student debt, all of which is my sole financial responsibility.
That exorbitant number was abetted by easy lending with a co-signer, negligence and lack of awareness, over-borrowing and the exponential growth of tuition.
Along with never sweating the details on future income versus a debt repayment schedule. Apparently NOT a part of progressive thought.
But don't worry Katie - there's a new booming career opportunity for you.
Probably old to the blog but obligatory.
Why are Americans less stylish than Europeans/Japanese?
i mean style in clothing, but the same question could be asked about taste in architecture, interior design and other domains. (blog post by a fashion person: http://bangsandabun.com/2010/03/europeans-dress-better-than-americans-fact/)1. greater average distance to a major fashion center. both physical and cultural distance.
2. less urbanization [these points 1&2 were maybe more important in the past]
3. distance from europe and few of the relevant european style-leaders emigrating
4. different signaling aims (more internal cultural diversity and weaker class distinctions; male clothing needing to be less 'gay' and more conventional).
5. any relation to the late blooming of US visual art and music on the world scene?
6. american is more informal in style and has been an influential exporter of informal styles (this doesn't undermine the general point about the style difference)
There are some pretty good responses in the comments but fundamentally I'd say that this is a cultural difference - adhering to style is just not as important here. For one thing American society is more diverse with multiple sub-cultures so there's no single style to follow. And in general signaling or reading social status isn't nearly as important in the US as it is in other countries. Plus in many European countries there seems to be strong social pressure to dress a certain way befitting your age and status or be looked down upon.
I remember a friend from Germany being surprised to see old people in the US walking around in shorts, t-shirts, jeans, etc. - pretty much whatever younger people might wear. Apparently in Germany once you get to a certain age you're expected to dress in a 'distinguished' fashion rather than whatever trendy styles the 40-something kids are all wearing. Here we're free to be as stupid and goofy as we wanna be - which in the end is the only true freedom.
Damn: Police Bust Ends 'Free sex after nine car washes' Offer
Best rewards program ever:
Nine Vietnamese women, ages 18 to 28, believed to be prostitutes were arrested.Police learned of the unique partnership between the car wash and sex ring when they kept finding car wash loyalty cards in the pockets of alleged customers of the sex ring.
The Mail quotes Emmi Shah Fadhil, the officer in charge of the area's Crime Prevention Division, as saying: "To get the extra 'offer', customers must send their cars for washing nine times within a certain period. The 10th car wash will entitle them to free sex,"

You know what irritates me about the student loans fiasco? Speaking from firsthand knowledge based on a couple of nieces and a nephew, these damn 20 somethings took out way bigger loans than they needed to because they were using the money for clothes, food, movies, new Apple products, booze. Because they could. And now they whine their asses off about having to repay these monster debts when they should have had more effing common sense in the first place.

And while there are numerous beautiful old buildings in Europe (as a whole) a lot of the newer building are really ugly, in a barren sort of way.

I went to school in-state. I majored in something that had at least a passing usefulness. I joined the Army to pay off my debts and pursued a career path that would offer me opportunities outside of school. I took advantage of opportunities in the Army to improve myself through additional schooling. When I deployed I used the money that I made to pay off the last of my loans instead of spending it on toys.
I've done everything that I should have, lived within my means, and acted like an adult. To hell with this little bint.

Miami of Ohio tuition NOW (2012) is about $31K a year. It is a "select" state school (more expensive than most other state univeristies). Most state uni's in Ohio are about $17-19K a year (tuition, room and board).
Was all her tuition and room and board on loans? Wasn't she smart enough to get some grant or scholarship money?
Xavier is a private school and is about $48-52 K a year (undergrad). If she went to Grad school there she should have gotten some kind of stipend as a grad student/teaching assistant.
$188K in loans. Unless you went to an Ivy or Stanford, that's just nuts.

This was in large measure because of some substantial academic scholarships.
Not the answer for everyone certainly, but part of the problem is we send so many people to college. There aren't enough non-government dollars. But that is merely an effect of having too many slots in college.
A realistic education program would start by cutting federal aid to college in general, and more tightly pointing it to majors we need - referencing the H1B list should give a good idea of what those are.

I don't disagree with you. All I'm trying to say is that traditional education is pushed on these kids until they think it's an entitlement. And, when they discover it actually costs money in their early 20's after having the 'rents pay everything, some of them may wonder why they weren't educated on the cost in the first place instead of being pushed into school anyway. Plenty of kids learn better beforehand, but lots don't. That's all.

Why?

Sweetie, that's how taxes work in this country, ever since the socialists took over. What do you think medicare, medicaid, AFDC, subsidized school lunch programs, and all the rest of it is? Fixing others' mistakes. If it weren't, it would be very temporary aid, like, a couple of months. Instead, we have whole generations who couldn't get a job if it were forced on them.
The idea is to keep yourself above all that crap, hold your nose and pay the taxes so you don't end up in jail, and find a decent shelter when you have enough to hide.

And yet, they're incapable of understanding that most taxpayers consider college students to be privileged in a sense. Getting advanced degrees makes you a a 1%'er in comparison to most of the population.
Again, I can't pay my bills. But I should subsidize college students. Fuck that.

The problem with college costs is administration and overhead. They are not paying faculty more, they are not providing better product. They're just charging their customers more because--like with medical costs--those paying and those consuming are not the same people.
The idea that college is an investment is true only when you invest in an education that produces someone capable of paying back the cost of that education. Otherwise, it's a rat hole.

My mom worked customer service...sales, basically. She had twenty years experience. But, hey, credentialism. We must lift the new aristocracy over the working class. So, even though no degree should even be needed for her line of worked...it became essential.
You'd think , with lots of students not even graduating HIGH SCHOOL, that requiring degrees for labor that isn't highly intellectual essentially leaves large segments of the populace unemployable. Especially minorities, that drop out at higher rates. So, college credentialism=racism.

Interestingly, if the British government had decided to cave to the Germans before fighting *officially* started Churchill and his supporters intended to fight anyway (against their own Vichy-like government as well). Fortunately, the King thought Churchill was right and funded them from his private money until the Brit government could be convinced that the Nazis*had* to be opposed.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Sep. 10, 2012 — A new kind of roof-and-attic system field-tested at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory keeps homes cool in summer and prevents heat loss in winter, a multi-seasonal efficiency uncommon in roof and attic design.
The system improves efficiency using controls for radiation, convection and insulation, including a passive ventilation system that pulls air from the underbelly of the attic into an inclined air space above the roof.
“Heat that would have gone into the house is carried up and out,” says Bill Miller of ORNL’s Building Envelope Group. “And with a passive ventilation scheme, there are no moving parts, so it’s guaranteed to work.”
The new roof system design can be retrofitted with almost all roofing products. The heart of the design is a foiled covered polystyrene insulation that fits over and between rafters in new construction or can be attached on top of an existing shingle roof system. Homeowners donÂ’t have to remove old shingles, which saves money.
The paper, “Prototype Roof Deck Designed to Self-Regulate Deck Temperature and Reduce Heat Transfer,” was published by the National Roofing Contractors Association. Authors on the paper are W. Miller, Stan Atherton and Russell Graves of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Billy Ellis of Billy Ellis Roofing.... it's amazing what you can get for $1.34 trillion a year.

A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, the mainstream Islamist group and the sponsor of Egypt’s first elected president, Mohamed Morsi, urged the United States government on Tuesday to prosecute the “madmen” behind the video, according to the English-language Web site of the state newspaper, Al Ahram.
The spokesman asked for a formal apology from the United States government and warned that events like the video were damaging WashingtonÂ’s relations with the Muslim world. He also emphasized that any protests should remain peaceful and respect property.

total student debt after four (4) years. Paid it off early.
worked 40 hrs a week all through school. Plus grants, workstudy, scholarships you name it. No social life and zero parties; too busy working and studying. 4 yr accounting degree and I've been without a job exactly two months in my entire career and that two months was my choice.
This student smugly congratulated herself on her "progressive" cred for four years, racking up the debt for a shit degree and now she's moaning.
I have a terrific life now w/ lots of options and no student debt.
As my dad used to say: you can pay now and play later, or you can play now and pay later. I made my choices and this progressive cosmopolitan citizen of the world made hers.

bemoaning the way Americans dress after a trip to Germany about 15 years ago. I'm sure it's only worsened since then. Baggy tees and sweatpants, shorts, sox-n-sandals...
Here we go again. As an older person, I, for one, appreciate the freedom to dress casually in public. When I'm spending hours in the car/in the airport, standing in line and hauling around luggage/in an airplane\repeat in reverse order, I want to be comfortable and able to breathe. I draw the line at weddings and funerals. I do get disgusted with people showing up at weddings and funerals looking like they just rolled out of bed or stopped by on their way home from work.

When I worked for the Japanese and someone would say something like this the exact words they would respond with would be "that has no meaning" and then they would continue on like no one had said anything. I think it was their way of acknowledging someone had said something embarrassing and everyone should not dwell on the stupidity that just took place.

Consider that Sledge fought in two of the most Godawful campaigns of the war: Pelilu and Okinawa. If you read some biographical information about him it's clear that he suffered from PTSD for most of his life, though he didn't let it control him.
PTSD is probably a normal reaction to highly stressful & dangerous situations like war. When I returned from Desert Storm I (along with most everybody else) had PTSD symptoms to one degree or another (reactions to loud noises, etc.) The funniest example was when my unit returned to Ft Hood and we went from the airfield to Abrams Fieldhouse for a quick welcome back ceremony. As we marched into the gym a ceremonial salute was fired (this was about midnight, we had been in transit for 30+ hours at this point). All of us hit the dirt and started to reach for our weapons (we had already turned them in at the airfield). As we started to get up the NCO's had to stop some of us from attacking the ceremonial unit that had fired. Ahh, good times.

It's like saying "I enrolled from Shitbird Prep". Even if you had context around it that made it partly understandable, it would still be wrong.
Katie obviously thinks "matriculate" means "graduate".

I looked up the voting totals a few months ago and surprisingly, McCain equaled the vote total that Bush had in 04. NoVA totals seemed to be in line with 04's also. It was in the traditionally "red" areas of Virginia that Obama seemed to get his added votes, and those were the ones that disappeared in 09, 10, and 11 elections. I do believe some of those voters were, what is a delicate way to phrase it, oh yes, ACORN voters.

Its almost like the local dem party is distancing itself from itself. Most local Dem candidates aren't putting party affiliation on their campaign signs.

The 'dreamy' vampire, Edward, says...."We matriculate a lot".....in response to Bella [the lead girl] noticing a huge wall-hanging made of dozens of mortar board hats....as he is showing her through his house.
The way he said....'matriculate'....made it sound like he meant 'graduate'.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY DO YOU APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR STATEMENT?
It is often noted that the Media is corrupt, and their pathological sycophancy towards Obama is evidence of that. The devotion of the Media to Obama astounds, as by all accounts Obama is a cold and solitary figure.
If Obama is re-elected it will be the work of the Media, as he could win by no objective standard, and all the sorrow to come will lay fully on their hands.

"507 Obama was the worst- didn't have any emotion at all talking about 4 Americans who were brutally murdered.
That's his NPD speaking. What happened wouldn't bother a narcissist at all."
I "second" that assessment. Practically all of Obama's behavior can be explained by (1) severe NPD, (2) socialism, (3) anti-colonialism, and (4) cronyism, in that order. Although the last one is kind of redundant.
I especially remember when he was asked about national security leaks (the ones that only could have come from within the WH). Every other president would have assured the public that he would investigate the matter and make sure any violators would be punished (and then not do it). A lot of what passes for humor these days is just stupid, trite, and rote. Real humor is hard and often fails because the audience is too Neanderthal to get its subtlety or even recognize the clever word play that makes something funny. Half the time you wind up failing at it 80% of the time.

Eliminate every living soul, then leave.
It'd be a serious disincentive for allowing ambassadors to be murdered. You wouldn't even need Marines. The local constabulary would be jumping on grenades to assure ambassadors' safety. Hell, local criminal syndicates would be knocking off anyone who mentioned the ambassador's health.
The UN would scream, the lefties would faint, anyone whose plans included knocking off an ambassador would switch its funds from "operations" to "PR"......and the end result would likely be a significant decrease in violence against Americans.
Hmmmmm.....
How about, "every American killed in your country needs 10,000 honor guards to Valhalla"? It ain't fair, and it's designed to be disproportionate -- but would it be effective? In the early rounds, a regime would sacrifice those who it desired to be gone, anyway.....but by labeling this as a payback for American deaths, would the regime gain or lose credibility?
My general feeling is that "proportionate response" is a greater evil than "wildly disproportionate response" because malefactors can calculate a cost-benefit that may lie in their favor. In the first move, proportionate is better. In the long run, wildly disproportionate may be a runaway.

Speaking of NPD, please indulge me in a little group therapy.
My commie brother posted that stupid twitter story about Jim Cramer on FB, and I called it a "silly story" because the guy can just file an absentee ballot, and further pointed out that Cramer's update - which says that the PA authorites contacted him and took care of it (which means "false alarm - never mind") affirms that. It was silly to claim that his dad couldn't prove he was a citizen, and even sillier to say that the fact that he was too old to drive had anything to do with it, and the silliest thing was the implied suggestion that the father should simply be allowed to vote on the "honors system."
Just to be clear, by the time of the link, Cramer had already essentially admitted that he wrong - that his dad would be able to vote after all. Let's not forget, also that impulse control is literally part of this guy's schtick, and he has come out openly for Obama - which is where I stopped paying any attention to him). So putting this out there was pure partisan quackery and hate-mongering. Even the original author had admitted he was wrong.
Perhaps you all know how it goes - it always follows the same pattern with a hard-core NPD lefty. First they make some lame attempt to defend what is obviously undefendable (again, even the originator had essentially retracted!). The arguments get increasingly ridiculous (at one point he literally suggested that our late grandfather, who was born in PA a few year before they started birth certificates, would not have been able to vote under this law), and then the conspiracy theories that the "nepharious" Republicans just want to disenfranchise Democrat voters.
I had to throw in that I thought it was also rather silly to suggest that any Democratic cousins we have down there had some sort of inherent disability that would cause them to have a harder time with their paperwork than our Republican ones. Oh, and that it was silly to suggest that a state as big as PA was magically 100% devoid of voter fraud (when it's easy to do) based on the fact that they have never prosecuted a case.
Next comes frustration and anger, which invariably leads to ad hominums, various insults, personal attacks, and general verbal abuse. Usually most of that is via what I call "hate mail". I called him out on it, and probably have even more extreme hatemail waiting for me. People with NPD do not apologize, do not back off, and it is NEVER their fault.
I've pretty much decided that it would be self-flagellation not to dump my brother from my list. "Friends" don't act that way - hell, civilized people don't act that way - and being a blood relative of mine is no excuse for expecting a "pass".
In fact, I don't especially like pretty much any of my family members. My neices and nephews periodically spout hateful partisan propaganda, and none of them lead lives that especially lend credit to the family. My one nephew literally works for Obama's campaign, which is scandalous. Even my other brother - who isn't a libtard - is a scumbag who is getting divorced again, after having cheated on his wife for years.
I'm sure you all can relate to at least some of this. OK. Rant "off" now!

I had to figure out why people wanted to know about four dead Americans.
Four!
Out of 300+ million!
That seems a little unreasonable. A lot of you are still alive. Only four of you were murdered. What am I, my brother's keeper?
Wait, don't cross-reference that to what I've previously said. And how I've previously-treated my actual brother.
The important thing is: people were chanting my name.
In Las Vegas.
It appeared a little unseemly to concentrate on a mere four people, amid all that.
So I recited my speech, full of down-home homilies, with y'alls and dropped 'g's, to appease the degenerates, and inside jokes to appease the super-smart coastals. Like dhjimmi-ray.
Anyway, fortunately my Palace Guard (BPQB 1st MFM) stepped in to cover for me Not that I need cover, I mean. Being almost as awesome as dhjimmi-ray, what cover do I need?
But they sprang into action anyway.
For which I thank them. I thank the for not being quite as smart as me. A tip o' the hat, for being good enough to recognize their betters.

Declarations of war, while sounding appealing on the surface, have some major downsides. For example - they can result in other nations being forced into the fight due to treaty obligations. WWI was basically escalated due to an interlocking network of treaty obligations as various powers declared war.
Keeping a fight "off the books" gives unwilling treaty participants a fig leaf to hide behind.

"... If we project that kinda crazy people will stop fucking with us. ..."
You know, I usually take the claims about how our feckless rhetoric caused this stuff with a grain of salt - it's really kind of unprovable. It always sounded a bit like the "saved or created" kind of rhetoric, making blithe and self-serving assumptions about what WOULD HAVE BEEN.
But it this case I just ask myself, "Why do these people think they can just push there way onto US territory, and vandalize our national symbols, while simultaneously violating the most basic rules of civilization, and get away with it?"
Then it becomes clear just how right guys like Bolton are. They know we won't stand up for ourselves, because our president thinks better of those barbarians than he thinks of his own country - and it is all too obvious.

@615
To be clear, I'm not saying "Barky" was really running the show, I'm saying that he's responsible for what his people do, even if they don't clear it with him.
For what it's worth, there was a report that State, back in DC, ordered them not to transmit their messages, but they disobeyed orders. I'm saying they're reponsible for what their employees do, regardless of whether they followed orders.
But the puzzling part is that while they try to disavow what the embassy put out, Hillary and Obama said pretty much the same thing anyway, the way I heard it.

This hood is archetypical "ground zero" for the housing bubble. As the foreclosures slowly get worked through, its nature is slowly changing. The meth lab that blew up is being rebuilt as a much nicer place after someone bought the blown up shell/lot. Even in a shit economy, the scumbags/criminals are slowly being evicted and replaced with upgrades.
We got hit with a lot of the human debris fallout when the city of West Palm Beach leveled a bunch of slums to build its "showcase" City Place office/commercial complex.

Fuck Florida. I have friends and family who are practically begging me to move to Clearwater because it's dirt cheap to live there. I love the beach and all but if it's that cheap, crackheads and whores tend to move in and ruin everything.
I'm happy here in Ohio.

There's a lot of decent neighborhoods where you can get a decent place for cheap. Clearwater doesn't have that bad a rep. The west coast of FL tends to be somewhat less sketchy than the east coast. Central FL maybe 40 miles south of Orlando and away from the coastal areas is quite rural and nice.
North of Orlando up around the DeLand area is pretty nice too. Daytona is a shithole. Get 25 miles north of Dayona though and it gets nice again until you hit J-ville.

Night temps down into the 20's are pretty common up there. Here in Palm Beach it goes into the 40's bur freezing is rare.

See here's the thing. I don't know that I can separate myself from Ohio weather. I get pissed if I'm not snowed in with at least six inches of ice and snow for three or more days in January.
It's an excuse to take a mini vacation and build a nice fire in the fireplace.

Oh, people can easily consider it someone else's fault, if they're suitably inclined to delude themselves. They'll just toss around the words "big oil" and "obscene profits", and when they get to the pump they'll rage at evil corporations trying to take advantage of a bad situation for a buck.

Unfortunately they aren't dead they are alive, mostly wealthy, and well. The spectacle we saw where Obama's disaster was turned into an attack on Romney, was a sad reminder of the latent power of the Media.

on the fashionable reference, i find it fascinating that European fashion is the standard we are measured by. isn't it a progressive assumption that, by definition, Europe is more fashionable and there we are less.
also, i thought we were to celebrate diversity, well i guess that doesn't apply to fashion, where we should all emulate Europe.

That age must be about 90. I was in Germany last summer and if by style, you mean any mismatched piece of fabric you can lay your hands on, then yes, the Germans have style.
I'm a scientist and *I* was better dressed.

Today we have gathered in a public school to talk about some very pressing issues that we are going through as a people. My fellow presidential candidates often question me, saying my speeches are about dreams and do not stand a chance, but we know what we can succeed in. We know what we will succeed in. There is no question hope can succeed. We have seen what so-called 'experience' does. It sends us to war based on lies. It weakens our resolve. It fills us with bitter rage. These are not accomplishments; they're signs that we need to change.
We are facing a weakened economy, but our leaders are looking away. They fumble around with speeches written by others and we suffer. "Address the issue," we demand, but our voices have fall on deaf ears. Today that changes! We come here full of inspiration. We come here to create unity. I stand here before you, my ears open, my heart pleading. I ask that you join me; join me in this gathering of hope. Join me in making this country better than it has ever been. Join me in making it a place we can be proud of, a place in which pride thrives rather than starves, a place known for humanity and goodwill, a place that pushes the expectations of chivalry. United, we can make this a country in which patriotism means being willing to hold government accountable, upholding our need to improve, helping all people, and progressing toward a greater future. The America I know was hurt by 9/11, hurt badly, and still wants to see Osama bin Laden brought to justice. The America I know dropped everything so we could help one another after Katrina hit, despite that our leaders were all on vacation. The America I know views our sale of arms to Saudi Arabia as a mistake that will only further disrupt the Middle East. The America I know spoke its mind during the 2006 elections and the voice was loud and unified. We need change. If we stay the course, rising fuel costs will lead beyond just a recession, our international reputation will die, and our deficit will ruin the future for our children.
I've been accused of being not being grounded. The people gathered here today know the truth. It does not take a white person or a black person to bring change. Nor does it take a man or a woman, a Christan or a Muslim. It doesn't even take an American. It takes a connected and empowered society that can agree on our need for progress as a united people; our principles of honesty must guide us whether they come from our religions, our science, or our fellow citizens. It will take an America that not only agrees political divisiveness weakens our unity, but an America that does something about it.
My opponents question my resolve. They ask if we can really accomplish all this. I tell them, "Yes, we can!" Thank you, America.
