Peter van Uhm: Why I Chose the Gun

Here General Peter van Uhm, the Netherlands' chief of defense, explains why he made the gun his chosen tool and the military his career: Because he loves peace and hates evil.

Those who know the saying si vis pacem, para bellum will now doubt find many of his arguments familiar but you rarely ever hear them so forcefully and eloquently expressed - especially to a European audience who are prone to pride themselves on being 'beyond war'.

To put this in context remember that there is a non-trivial minority of the Dutch who would like to do away with their armed forces entirely so Gen. van Uhm is targeting those who have a stereotyped view of the military as mere war-mongers - an audience who are able live their lives woefully ignorant of guns only because of men like him who sweat the details 24/7 to keep it that way.

How Skewed Are the Polls?

Well this skewed. Pretty much everything showing a Dem sample advantage  - i.e. every poll on the right - is just wishful thinking by the media.

120915-obama-media-polls

Plus Betsy of Betsy's Page has first hand experience with the kind of clown questions you get from PPP:

I was polled on Sunday by PPP about politics in NC and, for the last question, they asked "Who was more responsible for killing Osama bin Laden, Obama or Romney?" I was just flummoxed. I couldn't figure out what it was doing in a poll of standard questions on whom I was going to vote for or if I approved or disapproved of certain politicians. Well, now it's clear what the purpose of the goofy question was - to generate stats so they could make fun of Republicans. Well, I'll confess - I answered "not sure." That wasn't because I wasn't sure but it was my way of registering how ticked off the question made me. As I tell my students, one problem that we can't account for in polling is that people lied. So I lied. Now my answer is part of a Comedy Central gag.

China Now Entering 'Interesting Times'

The communist government has longed used nationalism as an escape valve for tensions in the country but events and nationalistic passions may be getting out of their control.

Before Jiang Zemin stepped down, a book was published of his selected speeches translated into English. In one speech to party cadres, he said that Japan's past must be used as a weapon against the country "forever".

They do not have elections. They are subjected to daily barrages of political propaganda so strident as to be numbing. Product exhibits in stores selling ordinary consumer goods are arranged in displays of militaristic chauvinism. Corruption is endemic and rampant, especially among the oligarchy. The work of sociopolitical engineering must be enormous. Their financial engineering is failing.

The largest country on earth, a nuclear power, is having another serious spasm. The people don't know what to do with themselves, nor what they can do with themselves. The People's Liberation Army is the country's largest interest group, and it is aggressively pursuing its interests, both at home and abroad.
This photo appeared on Weibo, the Chinese Twitter. Photographs such as these don't last long on the Net in China. It reads: Chinese people! What should we oppose? No wage increases. Public officials make large profits from illegal land transactions. We can't buy a home. We die because we can't go to a hospital. We can't die because graves are too expensive. We use all our assets to graduate from college and still can't get a job.

There are 30 grievances in all. I don't see any about the Japanese.

17 Euphemisms for Doing The Deed From the 1800s

3. Bread and butter

One on top of the other. "Rumor has it he found her bread and butter fashion with the neighbor."

4. Brush

"Yeah, we had a brush once." The emphasis here is on brevity; just a fling, no big deal.

5. Clicket

"They left together, so they're probably at clicket." This was originally used only for foxes, but became less specific as more and more phrases for doing it were needed.

6. Face-making

Aside from the obvious, this also comes from "making children," because babies have faces.

7. Blanket hornpipe

There is probably no way to use this in seriousness or discreetly, but there you have it.

8. Blow the grounsils

"Grounsils" are foundation timbers, so "on the floor."

The Real Gender Gap

Is in throwing:

Around the world, at all ages, boys throw better - a lot better - than girls. Studies of overhand ball throwing across different cultures have found that pre-pubescent girls throw 51 to 69 percent of the distance that boys do, at 51 to 78 percent of the velocity. As they get older, the differences increase; one U.S. study found that girls age 14 to 18 threw only 39 percent as far as boys (an average of about 75 feet vs. about 192 feet).

Oops: Wells Fargo Forecloses on the Wrong House, Destroys Elderly Couple's Possessions

Well this seems to be a pretty big fuck-up:

Wells Fargo mistakenly foreclosed on a home that had no mortgage, sending in a crew to steal all and throw out all the elderly homeowners' belongings. Alvin Tjosaas helped his father build the family home in Twentynine Palms, CA when he was a teenager, and the couple raised their own children there. The Wells Fargo crew destroyed their entire lives' accumulation of personal possessions. Wells Fargo says it is "deeply sorry" and that it is "moving quickly to reach out to the family to resolve this unfortunate situation in an attempt to right this wrong."

I'm guessing Wells Fargo will settle rather than risk this ever going before a jury.

The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.

My eyes started to get tear up.  When I told her that I wasn't going to be able to support her all of her life, I just lost it and bawled like a little baby.

She comforted me and assured me that things will be OK.  Oh.

Industry, thrift, character, cannot be conferred by act or resolve. Government cannot relieve from toil. Do the day's work. If it be to protect the rights of the weak -- whoever objects -- do it. If it be to help a powerful corporation better to serve the people -- whatever the opposition - - do that. Expect to be called a stand patter, but don't be a stand patter. The Romney quote is that most of Obama's supporters will vote for him because they feel entitled to a house, health care, free food, free cell phones, etc. Um... If you're an Obama voter... Why would this make you feel bad? You DO feel entitled to those things. That's why you're NOT going to vote for Romney; he's threatened to take those things away. If you're an undecided voter (and if you are, I spit on you and your whoreson progeny), then you need to take a hard look at that quote and ask yourself why it makes you feel uncomfortable. Is it because you think Romney's being extreme? Or because you know it's true? In other words, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Romney quote for 85% of the electorate. The remaining 15% are worthless.

156 My two cents on Wells Fargo--the fact that there apparently have been no arrests proves we live in a world where the powers that be can get away with almost anything. The intent to steal might not be there but there was negligence, and there was a breaking and entering. Weakening the breaking and entering laws because"some company said I could do it" is only going to lead to abuses. And ignores the law in the first place. This nation is in many respect but a shadow of the America that once was. We are throwing the common law down the drain. The King of England may not enter your home, but Well Fargo damn well will--and not face any criminal liability, apparently.

If they're going to start fatwa-ing everyone in the world who insults their precious pedophile "prophet," they're going to find themselves stretched a bit thin. I have no problem with that. Let them bring it over here and they can come face to face with our Second Amendment. Or, failing that, a good old Louisville Slugger to the kneecaps, followed by a swift kick to the balls.* *It's hard to find the balls on a filthy Jihadist, because their penises are so SMALL and their balls have a tendency to retreat into the body when they're faced by an angry woman with a baseball bat and a carving knife.

He slipped it in, in his impromptu press conference in CA...a few hours ago, where he clarified what he meant in those "captured" remarks.

He also asked that, whomever taped that and released it...would also release the full conversation that took place in that question-and-answer session.

Because then, he said...people would be able to see the context of his answer, in relation to the question he was asked.

Ha.

I am in my mid-forties. My WHOLE FUCKING LIFE I have been hearing news stories about Muslims getting so fucking offended by some goddamned thing that they just have to go on some uncontrollable murder-rampage. A book, a film, a fucking cartoon. I am simply tired of Muslims.

I can go a month without hearing the word "Taoist" or "Confucian." I can go for weeks without hearing "Buddhist." If Romney wasn't a candidate right now I could probably go a year without hearing "Mormon." But I hear "Muslim" every fucking day. And it's never anything good. I never hear that Muslims pitched in to rebuild a church, or Muslims score well on tests, or Muslims report greater personal happiness in their lives. No, it's always Muslims seething with violent rage over some goddamned thing.

Here's a thought: how about Muslims try not killing anyone just for a change? Maybe try it for a month: spend a month doing something other than murdering people. That means no lobbing rockets at Israel, no gang-raping Coptic Christians, no burning animist villages, no sectarian violence against other Muslims, no shooting rampages through India, none of that.

Think they could manage it? For just a month? How about a week?

How about one fucking day?

I would be happy if just one fucking day in my life I didn't hear about some revolting atrocity committed by Muslims because somebody somewhere said something that hurts their fucking feelings.

That was precisely the argument former liberal columnist-turned-CNN political guru Ron Brownstein made tonight. It's worth noting, and then dismissing. Romney's point was 'lower taxes' isn't going to be a winning message for people who don't pay them. Seniors who vote Republican will support Romney regardless.

He sounded great when he talked about Freedom and Dependency on the Government....and sorry it is soooo true that majority do not pay TAXES!!  And do not give me this sales tax and property tax BS!  The 47 percent can move to where there is no sales tx...the Federal Taxes follow you everywhere!!

He showed backbone and you know he was smart to get out in front for himself...not let the press set the narrative in the morning.  He did....I like that!! Conservatives will increase their support for Mitt here!!  He will shore up some base...I like it...and many Independents know the 16 trillion in debt is from unsustainable entitlements and people living off the govt.

Mitt hit a good theme here....everything happens for a reason...the Mother Jones people have slingshot or boomerang!  This is going to smack back at them and Obama!!

One thing people who work hate is FREELOADERS we all know it and we talk about at work, home and play.  Yes there are lazy people but I think Mitt hit a nerve that gels with many people's personal feelings about those that work and those that leech!

Someone on a previous thread said we should send that POS Blind Sheikh back to Egypt, because he never directly did anything in the 1993 WTC bombing.  He is right, the blind guy did not make the bomb or deliver it.  He just provided the fatwa saying it was OK and helped put together the murderous crew.  But if it was not for him, the six people that died would have not died on that day.  Not to mention all those killed at Luxor.

As an analogy, he is sort of like Charles Manson.  Old Charlie never killed Sharon Tate or any of the others, he just told his psycho bastards to go do it.  another one is (Godwin alert), AH never killed any of the jews directly.  He only ordered it done.

And IF or when the blind sheikh gets back to Egypt, his hateful ass will be happy to issue fatwas for murder and mayhem against any one in western civilization.

Someone signed off on that job order.  They should be under arrest for at a minimum burglary, and every one involved can be hauled in for conspiracy.

But no one will, because the local cops and prosecutors do not want to rock the boat.  The bank will make life tough for them and the city or county elected officials.  Better to make consoling noises and wring their hands.  But like Alex said, one way to stop it is to make sure they know they are going to be hurt directly.  Even 30 days to one banker would be enough.  With a misdemeanor or felony on his record, he/she would be fired under the new banking rules.

You know, it would be awesomely easy to agree with that. Banks DO suck, when they are in a position to fuck everyone else with little or no penalty.

When Clinton repealed Glass-Steagal, the most effective banking sector regulation ever conceived, that's when it truly went back to shitville.

Let's spread it around, too. Greenspan pushed it hard, the fucking fraud. So did a bunch of GOP fossils STILL in Congress. They all bought into the bullshit notion that banks AND state/local gov'ts wer pushing (property taxes, morons. never forget pension fund liabilities): Real estate always grows, so risk is always low.

Banks are a manageable evil. The fuckheads took the chains off. Welcome to the modern political class.

Posted by: IdowhatIwant at September 17, 2012 11:06 PM (a4CUi)

Lighten up Francis. What happened with Wells Fargo had nothing to do with repealing Glass Steagal. If GS was still law, this would have happened because it was a mortgage, and banks made mortgages before, during and after GS.

And that thing about the electricity being...'turned off'...and 15 years later, they still can't turn it on again?

A worldwide EMP would fry everything.

But you could still repair things, and eventually get electricity again.

312 Posts like @296 are precisely why I do not drink anything while checking posts. I don't want to short out my laptop with a spray of lemonade while laughing. Nicely done, sir. Regarding television, the only television shows that I watch with any regularity are Mentalist and Falling Skies, and by regularity, I mean that I drive to my parents' house to watch them on the appointed days. I don't pay for television, haven't for years - thought about it a couple years ago while SGU was on but... I'm still a little bitter about Stargate Universe going off the air. -_- This country doesn't know what's good anymore, but that's not terribly surprising, I suppose...

338 319 I remembered,American Thinker. Here's an excerpt. Apparently, Secretary Clinton has flexible standards. The Associated Press reported soon after The Book of Mormon's opening that "he show has been greeted not by protests but rhapsodic reviews and standing ovations from crowds that have included celebrities as diverse as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, actor Jack Nicholson and composer Stephen Sondheim." Indeed, the show has been the biggest hit on Broadway these past two seasons, winning nine Tony Awards along the way. True, when the show premiered in 2011, the media were shocked. NPR accurately called it "blasphemous." The Washington Post called it "acidic." The New York Times called it "more foul-mouthed than David Mamet on a blue streak." But the media did not stop there -- not at all. In context, NPR called The Book of Mormon "blasphemous, hilarious and oddly endearing." The Post called the show "one of the most joyously acidic bundles Broadway has unwrapped in years." And the Times called it, foul-mouthed or not, "a newborn, old-fashioned, pleasure-giving musical."

Go online.  Learn five basic figures.  Practice.

Seriously, in a social setting you won't need more than five or six figures for any dance.  Nothing fancy, but the basic, underarm turn, cross body lead, fifth position breaks, and one other should do it.

You shouldn't be dancing with her all night, you should dance with lots of women and she should dance with lots of men throughout the night.  You get first dance, last dance and a couple in between.

367 I really liked Romney's defense of his comments. I just don't see this being that big of a deal, though I know it's going to be spun to hell, so Romney will need to stay on it all week. While he's at it, he can defend his comments from last week too. He's proven to be on the mark with those already too. The spirit of what he said here is dead on too. I don't agree with the 47%, at least not exactly as he said it. Some of those that don't pay income taxes don't see themselves as perpetually in that class. Still, every one of those is offset with a wealthy liberal. So, yeah, Obama's floor is probably about 47%. That's evidenced by his approval ratings even after 4 years of economic disaster. The right leaning talking heads better just stand in there and argue on this ground the next few days. No candy ass pants wetting on this one.

So for a week, the O admin has been running around telling us this was about a "movie", but now they're going to release the Blind Shiek because it was really about him... the American who was stupid enough to believe O/MSM that this was about a movie will feel blindsided by this turn of events and probably disagree with the decision that much more.

Funny thing is, O would finally be telling the truth if he says this was in part due to the  Shiek. It's also about the #2 AQ guy O took out witha drone in June, but then it would be O's fault so we won't hear about that.

392 Interesting how all of Romney's "gaffes" seem to point in the area of American exceptionalism, defending the constitution, and the importance of self-reliance, no? Meanwhile, every time Obama goes off script he's talking about the virtues of government and collectivism. As far as people leaching on society, this is the argument I make often to people on the fence. It's the argument my fiancé makes to her apolitical younger brother (who is working 2 jobs) to try to get him to turn out.

394 So,they just keep lying.Forcing our intel services to lie on their behalf. Asked if the timing of the Benghazi incident - the eleventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks -- was simply a coincidence, the senior U.S. official said on Monday: "It is coincidental. All evidence we have points to this video being the spark of these events. In all of the intel and traffic, there was no one out there saying, 'Oh, it's September 11th, we must avenge...'" The senior U.S. official added that this is "the consensus view of the U.S. intelligence community at this point," and that Rice "was not out there volunteering her own opinions." The official also discounted as "not accurate" reports that staff at U.S. embassy in Egypt warned the State Department -- in a cable purportedly sent on the afternoon of Sept. 10 -- about the effect the anti-Islam video was having, and the likelihood of violent protests in Cairo, but received no response from Washington.

Today, all I saw were Romney bumper stickers, and Romney yard signs. Not seeing any Obama stuff except at a couple of true blue Dems that I know. They are the only ones. The Romney stickers are "single" bumper sticker cars, and the Obama ones have been the typical lib 250 bumper stickers on their cars types.

402 394 From the beginning of the same piece, notice the parts that don't fit. FoxNews.com, September 17: An intelligence source on the ground in Libya told Fox News that there was no demonstration outside the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi prior to last week's attack -- challenging the Obama administration's claims that the assault grew out of a "spontaneous" protest against an anti-Islam film. "There was no protest and the attacks were not spontaneous," the source said, adding the attack "was planned and had nothing to do with the movie." The source said the assault came with no warning at about 9:35 p.m. local time, and included fire from more than two locations. The assault included RPG's and mortar fire, the source said, and consisted of two waves. The account that the attack started suddenly backs up claims by a purported Libyan security guard who told McClatchy Newspapers late last week that the area was quiet before the attack. "There wasn't a single ant outside," the unnamed guard, who was being treated in a hospital, said in the interview. These details appear to conflict with accounts from the Obama administration that the attack spawned from an out-of-control protest. The Libyan president also said Sunday that the strike was planned in advance. U.S. officials, in response to the claim that there was no demonstration at the time of the attack, told Fox News there was a small protest earlier in the day -- but they did not dispute that there was no significant or sizeable demonstration at the time.

408 367  I really liked Romney's defense of his comments.

Dutch general:  spectacular.  The conceit and illiterary moral narcissism of Europeans - esp., say, Germans - leads directly to war, death, and the failure to stop evil.  It's amazing that a region capable of quite a bit historically is generally utterly idiotic as to what war is, and about, and why it happens.

Throwing: one of the great all-time riffs of PJ O'Rourke (and that's saying a lot) was in an essay about the 1987 Palestinian "intifada" (famous for its rock-throwing yutes).  Something about if this situation had taken place in, say, Panama, the IDF woulda been driven out in days.  But unlike Panamanians (baseball country), Palestinians threw like girls.  Brilliant observation, extra nice for the, uh .... "inside baseball" cultural references.

Beirut:  through personal connection heard about pre-crisis prep last week; but it was about personnel, and not until October.  Betcha things have been accelerated a bit.

China/Japan:  China is a pretty vile operation in many ways, here's to hoping Japan doesn't lose its nerve.  Chinese and NoKo bumbling bellicosity the last 15 years have helped move Japanese public understanding quickly back towards normal (generational change helps too - and of course the Japs had a US-approved heavy dose of official idiotic pacifism installed after 1945 - unlike many Euros, who arrived at their disastrously naive de facto support of evil and genocide all on their own, in cases like the Netherlands).

Poll samples and questions:  Ras' methodology has fared pretty well, though apparently 2010 threw him a bit.  For now I choose to interpret that as a very good sign.  Unless something changes, I can't shake the feeling that 2012 will make 2010 look like a day of big storm surf vs. a huge tsunami.  The (well-founded, thought-through) near panic and increasing disgust of so many different sorts of voters at the mind-boggling stylings of the incumbent and his toxic clown posse just cannot foreshadow a "normal" election cycle.

My college-age daughter and I went to see Karl Rove talk a few hours ago.

If that makes you jealous, it should. He was, at various times, funny, informative, sobering, and downright moving.  He was at all times very well-spoken. The tales of patiotism he had witnessed would bring you close to tears. His assessment of where we might be headed might keep you awake at night.  His insight about George W were inciteful.  His description of how it works in the White House did not take intentional digs at Obama, but made it glaringly obvious why the government is completely disfunctional right now.

There was only one audience member who was a problem - kept shouting out seemingly hostile questions.  That was not the format - questions were written - but he took a couple anyway, and then respectfully proclaimed that the person was "not more important than everybody else in the room", and that they also have questions.  There were a very few protesters outside; I coudn't even tell what the hell they were complaining about.

We didn't get there early enough to be in the main auditorium, but they had an overflow area that was OK.  Even in the People's Republic of WNY, ol' Karl packed them in.

One thing Rove mentioned that struck me was about the intelligence reports.  He described those as when "W" learned how many people that he had sent into harm's way had been killed that day.

Kind of puts a new spin on the stuff that Obama is having mailed in.

I had forgotten, if I had heard it, but "W" met with virtually every family of the military who died over there.  Rove said they made sure it wasn't ever before events, so they wouldn't ever have to cut it short due to time commitments.  He said he would take notes, and just try to keep his composure.  Sometimes the families were just mad at the world; sometimes they took it out on the President.  You can imagine how ugly it must have gotten, but he kept doing it anyway.

Rove's talk was meant to be educational, and they had asked him to keep it fairly apolitical.  His focus was on how things change when you're campaigning vs. being in office.  He said you like to think you're just going to throw yuor weight around, and try to get things the way you want, but that it just doesn't work that way.  The key thing is that compromise is critical, that compromise must start with the most powerful person in the room, and that's the President.

It was left to the student [my interpretation] to contrast that with "we won", and then ask yourself why - for the first time in my not-especially-short lifetime - we haven't seen a budget in over 3 years.

Optimizer, that bit about W meeting families of the fallen rings very true.  And word in the military about things like that spreads far, and fast.  Probably one of several reasons behind the reaction to W's presence I witnessed first-hand in one of our war zones back in 2006.  I have never seen a large room (ballroom) like that erupt with that much enthusiasm.  And of course W took the time to greet and shake hands with about 90% of those present - making the whole thing late.

By chance I know that the current vastly inferior incumbent has met at least some of the families.  I ran into one last year, the mother, a few days after it happened.  The only decent thing I've seen from him since he was absurdly launched into an adult job without merit, preparation, or reason.

Wow, Model, that kind of thing can really shake you up!  I was driving home from work one day and hit a kid on a bike who was riding across the street and had come up out of my driver's side blind spot.  I wasn't going very fast but the kid hit my car and rolled over the hood of my car.  I stop the car, jump out, and in my excitement and panic I'm yelling at the poor kid, "Are you okay?"  The kid pops up. grabs his bike and takes off.  I stayed to give a report to the traffic cop who showed up, and good thing I did.  Kid goes home, apparently Dad sees his bike all torn to shit and the kid gives him a story that it was a hit and run.  The cops called me later that evening to tell me that the dad had taken the kid to the emergency room, told them it was a hit and run so the ER called the police and they were able to tell them that a report had been filed.

Can I ask how the US media works?

What i mean is, here in Australia, the Canberra Press Gallery and public broadcasters are 110% in the tank for the Left. But really, apart from political and government junkies, not many people are exposed to them.

Joe Average the car mechanic from suburban Melbourne doesn't watch 24 hour public broadcast news or read left-wing broadsheets. He reads his NewsLtd tabloid daily, listens to right-leaning talkback radio, and grabs a minute of politics on commercial TV while waiting for the footy scores.  Conservative political junkies get worked up about the bias of the "serious" press, but the reality is that they wouldn't be moving a single vote.

Presumably it's the same over there? Joe Average from Cleveland or Kansas City is reading the local tabloid and watching his local TV network news? So is it like Australia, the bias of the "serious press"  is strong but irrelevant?

I was cruising through a green light and from my left this dude comes flying through the intersection at top speed.   I think he only saw me when I locked up the brakes.  I was going about 25-30, he was going slightly slower.  He hit the drivers side corner.  Hard enough to break the frame of the bike in two.  His head hit the windshield hard enough to put a hole in it...tufts of his hair stuck in the glass. If his injuries are 'only' a shattered leg, arm and massive head injuries, I'd be amazed.  Like you said, it happened out of the blue, and the second I hit my brakes,  I knew he was toast.

@488

Rove's most moving story was a small project he took on right at the end of his time there. (BTW, he described his departure as having made him "broke", and had "broken his wife"; another staffer, described as important for national security, had also stayed on until their financial resources were exhausted.)

One family had lost one son, and their other son was there in uniform, having signed up.  The father stayed silent the whole time, until the President asked if there was something he could do for them.  The father said that he was an orthopedic surgeon, and he wanted to serve, but that they would let him because he was 61. Could the president please waive the age limit for him?

Karl looked into it, and learned that he was not only an excellent surgeon, but it great physical shape.  To make a long story short, he made it through boot camp and was sent on two tours in Iraq.  He was unhappy there, because he was just treating sports injuries, and they sent him on to do two tours in Afghanistan as well.  They had boarded up their house and basically given up everything to serve.

I guess that story is in his book.

I could listen to that guy all day long.

On Bush, he mostly said that Rove would get all uptight and angry at the various writings in the media, and then Bush would laugh at him for it (in a sort of "life is too short to get worked up over those guys" way).  There was also the story of "8 reasons for not picking Chaney", and his reasons for sticking with Cheney were similar.  I think that story is pretty famous.

502 The essential flaw with leftism is that it sounds good at first, but has horrible ramifications, e.g. --

2: Dude -- check him out -- passed out, tracks on his arm, a paper bag with a 40 sticking out, and a pipe and lighter hiding in his half-closed hand.
1: We should give him money so that he eats tonight.
2: We should mind our own business, but -- failing that -- we could steer him to a Salvation Army shelter where they'll try to sober him up. On no account should we give him money to enable his issues.
1: Heartless asshole!!! See, I gave him $20.

Later that same night, walking back --
2: Dude, I think that's a coroner's truck where the bum was....
1: At least he didn't starve.

Catching up on the Romney thing, having been away for the last six or seven hours.

I'm not as cavalier about it as our esteemed host, but it's certainly not the silver bullet the Obama camp (and by that I mean the media) thinks it is.  I fault him for an oversimplification, and inaccurate (I think) numbers.  Probably the 47% number IS the non-taxpayers, and I wonder whether that's "hopuseholds" vs "voters", but I don't think that's the fraction of people who would never vote for him, which is probably in the 30s or low 40s.

Many of the people who will never vote for him are elitist a-holes and people who have simply been programmed by the educational system and the media for decades.  That sounds like some of the non-taxpayers might have been for him.

Also, it ignores the people who are not simply layabouts, and the people who are non-taxpayers because there aren't jobs for them out there, and it seems insensitive towards them.

So I don't think it's good, and not nothing, but he was bound to have a hiccup somewhere along the way.

522 That's too bad, Dude. I really like the series. I have a soft spot for romantic comedies, though, especially ones written for guys, which Japanese and Korean creators tend to do really well. The major downside will be the wicked nasty ads that have already been canned, depicting all 47% as "losers".  Mitt needs to address that and clarify the intent.

This is pretty close to my own thinking.  I'm not sure how much blowback there is going to be on the 47% number, and how much will be positive to Willard for standing on the principle versus negative to how he phrased and framed the original taped statement, but it seems like the JEF wouldn't want to stress the talking point that almost half the country doesn't pay any taxes.

Criminal negligence is not common, and is a misnomer. It actually requires recklessness, a component of which either is actual knowledge of danger.

What's with the fetish of sending people to jail, anyway? This wasn't done on purpose; no mens rea, as someone already correctly said. There is no possibility of deterrence here. And jailing a flunky doesn't hurt the company. You really want to put someone, likely a clerk, in prison for a clerical error? Come on.

It's safe to say Obama has 47-49% locked down and Romney has no real clue how to break through that blue line. Any talk of a landslide is delusional. Naked Terror

Struggling actress Cathy Clairmont wrestles with a difficult decision: whether or not to begin doing nude scenes to improve her career outlook, at least in the short term. 573 I can admit when I am wrong. Any talk of a Romney VICTORY is delusional with those numbers. No way he wins WI without also winning OH and no way he wins in CO without also winning NV and/or NM. Romney wins it will be over 300 EV. Obama wins it will be the 274-282 EV CAC projected last week. The unbreakable floor Romney hinted at in his video and in his post-release response is much more indicative of the close Obama overall victory. As an aside it seems to me Merica has given up the fight. No one is excited about this election on either side. I live in mormonland and hardly anyone here is even excited about it. My personal take is the new normal has taken hold. Too many people are beaten down by the economy and watching their world be shattered before their eyes to even give a fleeting emotion to this let alone their time or money. That's why the honey boo boo nonsense happened. Too many have already capitulated emotionally and it's to much effort to give much of a shit anymore. You can't shake millions of people by the shoulders and scream at them to wake up. Look around at people's eyes and you will see. It's thousand yard stares born from the broken promises, broken dreams, broken hearts and broken lives caused by this Presidents failure. That will be Obamas lasting legacy. Less a learned helplessness like the one that took over Europe and more a forced helplessness when everyone realizes that the best days and the best reasons for hope are already behind us.

583 567 Being as how I am the worlds only libertarian environmental sociologist I will attempt to break this down. The takeaway is that Romney puts that as the floor with 5% undecided. Even in Ras Obama is pulling half the leaners. So all Obama has to do is keep that floor of at least 47 and increase his take of leaners to just above half and with his EV advantage he is home free. The real concern for me is the range of 47-49% that shows there is an additional 2% who are begging for a reason to vote for Barry. Add those to the floor and the leaners and Obama gets to above 50% with very little trouble. I'm guessing that's why Romneys campaign has been so cautious and gun shy. Their support is much squishier than Obamas and they don't want to give them any reason to return home to vote for Obama. My second guess is maybe this ME thing had begun to soften Obamas floor and that's why this came out now as opposed to Halloween. If I was Willard I'd release the rest of the tape showing the context and if they haven't been filming every event for just this eventually well then he deserves to lose.

Excellent. I'm serious. The opener is important and very, very hard to get right. Unless you can do something that has a certain poetry to it, the less skillful, but just as effective route, is something that goes... bam!

630 Concern troll=right but I can't emotionally come to grips. Listen to the video Romney says you have 47 48 49 percent who will vote for obama no matter what. Ya think he pulled that number out of his ass? Its actually higher than what most poli sci types had been assuming i.e. 45%. The reason he stopped at 49 is if he said 50 then he would be finished. It's actually worse than what i said before that as Ras currently has Leaners breaking 3:1 for Obama. That gives Obama 50% easy and with the trouble Gary Johnson is gonna cause especially out west you are looking at Obama at 320 or so. All this bloviating for four years and we trim off less than 50 EVs. Demographics are how I know. The rust belt states are similar but WI MI IL skew more Liberal than OH IN. If your not winning a more conservative electorate in OH you're not winning in WI I don't care how big your biceps are. Same goes in CO and NV. If Romney can't swing the victory in Mormon heavy NV hes not swinging it in medium Mormon CO/NM. Night kids.

687 From the middle of the Nation's website, in the comments section about the Romney video. She got a lot of flak:I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth and I do not begrudge Mitt Romney his lifestyle. I was born into a family of 11 and grew up in a two bedroom home. I am a Hispanic American citizen (born and raised in the US) whose first language is Spanish. I learned how to speak English in school where there were no Spanish speaking teachers to help me. I sat side by side in the same classrooms with kids who apparently didn't get the same education that I did. The difference is that I valued my education and I worked hard and believe it or not, I excelled in English classes. Some of my classmates went on to have three or four kids from several men and are now living off their fellow taxpayers. My family was on welfare very briefly because it was a humiliating experience. Instead we all started working at an early age and we all worked together to support ourselves as a family. We all contributed 50% of our earnings toward the household bills. We did not have a vehicle so we either took the bus or walked to work. I went to school during the day and worked evenings doing the books for a small cleaning business. My story was published in "Who's Who Among American High School Students." Amazingly enough, I always felt that my intelligence and hard work were enough to get ahead in life and lo and behold it was because I never felt the need to trade on my heritage via affirmative action. I was never one to begrudge others their lot in life or blame them for mine. At one point, I worked two jobs. I worked at a retail store from 8 to 3:30 and a computer company from 4 to midnight five days a week and still I didn't feel sorry for myself or feel the need to stick my hand into somebody else's pocket. I worked some of the most miserable jobs and for some of the most vile people out there but I never gave up or felt sorry for myself. In fact, my family still helps eachother out when one needs help. There are enough of us that we can do that and we would prefer to do that rather than expect our fellow taxpayers to do it. This is not to say that we are all well off but we can certainly work together to pool our money to help eachother because that is what families do (or at least what they used to do). We are also able to help others around us when need be because at this level we know what they need. We can put gas in a car or buy groceries, medication, etc. Mitt Romney spoke the truth. He said what a good majority of us already know and I am voting for Mitt in November.

If its the same sharon sweet from brevard county....and there aint a lot of them there...lolol.

Criminals teaching at community college harrassing our youth to vote for the biggest criminal thief the country has ever seen.

691 Damn....i rarely read the comments at Hot Air anymore because i got tired of the concern trolls and the eeyores.

Its like fucking eeyore city over there now a days

I am pretty sure the one day a year they open up registration the DNC hires a full time temp staff to make sock puppet accounts.

Couple that with their shitty decision to open up to facebook comments and every thread has that obama campaign office sockpuppet Kunta Kinte commenting on every story.

Hot Air used to be my favorite site last election, this time, not so much...its like being in a room full of menstruating cramping woman who neeeed a maaaan but cant get be bothered to put down the tub of poor me sympathy ice cream get up off their fat asses to bath, slap on some makeup, a pair of control top pantyhose, take the curlers out or atleast cover them with a hajib, hop on the bus and go find one at the local prison on community outreach day.

692 It was the same dream, a dream of a shambling horror with a thousand eyes and hands.  In each hand was a different weapon; a flail, an axe, longbow, crossbow, spear, and other even more horrifying weapons like three foot condom were spied.  And like other nights he could not move, all he could do is look as the monster crawled closer.  His heart pounded in his throat while spiders of terror ran across his nerves.  Just as it reached him, he was wrenched away by someone shaking him.  He opened his eyes in the morning light streaming from the windows to see someone looking down at him.  Then he finally screamed, it was Michelle above him.

714 Forgot to say they received 40 applications so... Two things, well three going for me- Background analyzing hazardous waste High marks from supervisors at previous position Personal recommendation from friend who is a doctor and teaches there occasionally as well as listed as a professor. Against me, the interview questions that almost everyone uses anymore, I have a hard time with. Probably because I see them as stupid.
