We hear the notion that paying more taxes is "patriotic".  Appeals are made to our "better nature" to not be "greedy".  Threats are floated of higher taxes being imposed to hold the productive sector of society to task to make up for the profligate spending of the big government faction in America.  What I'd like to know is why we don't hear appeals to the better nature of the huge portion of the population that is locked in to the entitlement society.  Where are the appeals to the patriotism of deadbeats? Where is the demand that public sector unions give their "fair share".  If we are truly all in this together, where is the outcry for accountability for welfare cheats? 
  The answer is, the political left does not really care about a sustainable future. They care only about buying enough votes to stay in the White House and continue down a destructive path. The mantra of "tax the rich" is nothing but moral greed, plain and simple. I call BS!

So a little anecdote.  Yesterday, I went to a lunch with a bunch of retired, old nurses I use to work with 100 years ago.  One of them (a wonderful, Filapina, hard worker, great nurse) has her hubby drive her (he is often the only man at these things).  He started talking about the Navy Seal who was involved in the Osama Bin Laden Mission on 60 Minutes.  I told him I hadn't seen that interview.  He said "Well, everything you think you know about that mission was a lie to benefit the President, and this guy wrote this book because his fellow seals wanted the truth to get out." 

 

He proceeded to ask me if I voted for Obama in the last election, and I kind of snickered and said "no!"  He said "I was the only one in my family that voted for McCain.  I tried to tell them all what this guy was about, but they wouldn't listen."  I turned to my former co-worker and asked incredulously "You voted for Obama?"  She looked really embarassed and nodded.  She has been a U.S. citizen for years.  She never voted before, and she voted for him.  I asked her if she is voting for him this time.  She laughed and very emphatically said "NO!" 

 

We had a great discussion about America and how our freedom under this president has been eroding away, and what an absolute disaster Obama and the Democrats are.  Apparently, she and her husband use to be Democrats, but not any more! 

 

He was a construction engineer and knows a ton of people who were small business owners in the construction industry.  He said "The unemployment rate is much higher than reported.  It's not just those who left the work force, but those who were self-employed, cannot collect it because they were the employer, and they are still without a job."  He is a really successful guy (was one of the engineers who worked on the WTC back in the day, his firm specialized in high risk buildings).  He also was a small business owner who employed 13 people.  They owned an appartment complex which they sold, and he said they paid $1.7 million in taxes on the sale.  He is still trying to convince his kids (one of which is an Ob/Gyn) not to vote for Obama.

He is making it his mission to inform everyone what a disaster Obama is.  At the end of our lunch, he asked one of the other ladies (a Japanese woman, who is also a naturalized U.S. citizen) sitting near us who she is voting for this November.  I almost fell off my chair when she said "Not Obama, he is a monster!"  I don't know if I've ever been somewhere (other than with my family or my hubby's family) where there were 4 Asian Republicans in one place!

Israel won't do anything unless provoked. What I was saying was that Assad may try to make himself the martyr for the cause. If it looks hopeless, firing some chemicals into Israel will bring a strike from the Israelis, and when that happens, does Al Quaida keep fighting Assad or start fighting the Israelis, their bigger enemy.

Saudi Arabia, they probably can't do it, but Iran would love it if they did. Who knows what the Iranians have given Assad in terms of some weaponry.

It made my day!  Out here in blue, blue Seattle, conservatives have traditionally huddled and whispered in hushed tones.  I am seeing people are finding a voice and are now not ashamed to come out of the right winged closet.  Even today at work, one of my co-workers came to me very concerned about the recent polls.  In another room I gave breaks in, the surgeon, another nurse and I were all Republicans, and we were giving our Physician's Assistant a hard time (because he's a Koolaid drinking Democrat). 

 

Things like politics (which weren't usually discussed at work) are being talked about, and some of the people who voted for Obama aren't so happy with him right now.  It warms my shriveled, little black bean heart.

In addition to party ID, I would also like to see the results if other aspects of the samples were adjusted to match the likely turnout, such as various demographic factors. For example, I've seen some of the polls not being outrageously biased on the party ID numbers but have disproportionate percentages of different demographic groups represented in their samples, with those demographic groups just happening to be expected to vote in larger numbers for Obama. I've seen some polls have samples with 60% women and others having people under 30 represent 30-35% of the total sample, which just happen to be two of the segments that overwhelmingly support Obama. Others have had disproportionate percentages of regions and states that everyone knows are going to support Obama overwhelmingly. This is how many of the pollsters play the game, as they will only be judged for accuracy based on how close the actual election results are to their final poll released before the election.

they vary in size and shape. her gramma is the size of a big pony. (if you are looking at my horses on bookface, shes the blazed face golden one with four white socks. Shes from russia and sometimes they were short on chow.  Ellie is a big racehorse full grown, 10 years old. that stallion is maybe three years old and only half grown. My studs not tall for the same reason, but his dad who broke his leg qualifying for the Pan American games was taller than Ellie.

I think almost everyone has relatives that think like your mom. For me, it's one of my grandmothers and an aunt. Why they think their loved ones who are Republicans would support a policy that throws disabled people out onto the street to fend for themselves is beyond me. Especially when I have a couple of relatives that are disabled and need the safety net. They never question their false assumptions, just keep spouting them like robots. It can be frustrating.

That same grandmother had a loud political argument with me at a family get together during Clinton's first term and said that all Republicans want to hurt old people. So, I asked her if I had ever hurt her. After all, she's an old person and I'm a Republican. She sputtered something about me not being like other Republicans. So I said, "You mean actual Republicans or the caricatures of Republicans that you and Bill Clinton have invented?" Over the years, we went through this same routine with various other favorite talking points of the Left, such as Republicans wanting dirty water and wanting Americans to die from lack of health insurance. To this day, she doesn't see how over-the-top her arguments are. Although not often said aloud, we all have our favorite and least favorite relatives. You can probably tell where she rates on my list, though my wife and I still do a lot for her ... though we usually try to avoid political arguments now because her ignorance and irrational love of liberalism is exhausting.

No, your not wrong. This is the age of Skype and a multitude of methods for instant communication. Having at least the representatives stay home would both save money and prevent what I call the "critical mass of stupid" which occurs when that lot get together (and it doesn't much matter which individuals make up the lot either).

 

This would also greatly reduce the influence of the beltway insiders (which is why it will never happen) and also decrease the chance os a tactical strike on DC being worthwhile.

Lots of leeching off of grandma's savings. It's infuriating to us all. My fiancé shows him some of his aunts Facebook postings, and asks him if he really doesn't think it is important to cancel out her vote. I think it's her most effective tactic yet. Are these actions in anyway what we would call sane?  No.  But look at the PRC.  The PRC is facing some serious internal issues.  The weaker the US currency gets, the less attractive the cheap products of the PRC are.  Which means companies like Foxxcon might get outbid by places like India to make all those Apple products. Then there is the issue of their aging population and 30 million men who will never marry, that is pushing them to a demographic cliff.  There is also endemic corruption in the bureaucracy that has alienated many.   And of course we have read the reports of all the bridges suddenly collapsing in their country. 

So in order to prop themselves up and distract their populace, Beijing is acting like Argentina.  Bang the grievance drum against Japan over some islands. 

If Japan and the PRC do get in a shooting war, the PRC has already discounted Obama from doing anything.  After all, due to Beijing objections, Obama cancelled the sale of 66 new F-16s to Taiwan.  So would owning all this debt, which Beijing stopped buying US Treasury bonds two years ago, really stop a ruling elite who feel their golden rice bowl is about to be spilled?  There is a good chance no, better to try to ride the tiger than face a firing squad is what they are thinking.  Now add in their ego of being the Middle Kingdom who has been denied its rightful place on the world stage.  The recipe is there for a nasty event that could get millions killed.

Put yourself in the shoes of South Korea or Taiwan if their oil supply lines are blockaded.  South Korea just has to be told, behave yourself.  Align with Beijing and North Korea won't invade.  And you will get oil again.  Taiwan is under a similar gun, after all Beijing calls them a breakaway province.  Beijing just has to say surrender, be like Hong Kong SAR and get your oil again.  And if the US is unwilling to stand up for these countries in a forceful manner, then the US is finished as a Pacific and probably a global power.

So that whole area is very unstable.  Am I being very pessimistic on this?  Yes, the only thing I have not addressed is the actual use of military power - ie shooting things and sinking ships.  If Beijing does things smartly and quickly, there won't be any shooting.  And as I said, the US will look impotent and no longer a super power.  Which in Obama's worldview would be fine, the US as the world's sole superpower is something he does not like.

The staff are very lovely, telling her what they are doing and taking steps to keep her comfortable. I'd rather have less fuss since this is not going to be long term but they earnestly mean well and its not like they are disturbing mom's rest.... Seems like better care than she got when she was just sick and not dying; maybe this is just a better hospital.

So sorry, palerider... Lost my mom last fall after a week in ICU.  It was the hardest day of my life, and I doubt I'll ever get over it.  But the ICU staff was amazing and very caring - I'll always be grateful to them.

Here's an analysis of who doesn't pay, why they don't pay and what they do pay in Federal and State taxes.

Perhaps we shouldn't be playing the class warfare game that the Democrats love to instigate.

I would love to see the country make it easier for folks to be employed at a wage that would afford them the basics and also allow them to get healthcare when they need it and not when it's too late.

So far everyone seems to think that by dumping all those who don't pay off of the government rolls that suddenly we'll be solvent again. This is a mistake and poor thinking. Understand that most people are on the government rolls for a reason. Yes some are there for bogus or borderline reasons but the majority are there because they either can't find work or can't work due to illness, age and other problems. Those problems won't go away by removing those people from the government rolls.

One has to think of what will happen to those removed. They're not going to disappear and in this economy and the regulations imposed on business, they aren't going to be able to find any work even if they could work.

There are no easy solutions to how we got where we are today. To think that changing the tax code to force more to pay what little they have on taxes as being reasonable or fair aren't thinking with their brain.

Couldn't be simpler to understand. What makes the government the government? -- a monopoly on the legal use of coercion. What form of redistribution is good, even laudable? That which proceeds from people's best natures and is voluntary. That's why charity is laudable and government redistribution loathsome -- an entity dealing with coercion cannot just pretend that its actions aren't coercive.

Exactly. Because of this obvious bias, the pollster with the most rigorous approach in order to achieve accuracy (i.e., Rasmussen) is considered the outlier (and biased to Republicans). The party affiliation weights are the most aggravating but the Left-leaning pollsters can support the overweighting of Democrats by saying that they are just following the margin that existed between Democrats and Republicans in 2008, as if nothing has changed since then. Of course, many of these same pollsters also undersample Independents, when virtually all polls show Romney has a solid lead with Independents. Gee, I wonder whey they're doing that, huh?
