When the Moon Sets Over Afghanistan
The Taliban may be ignorant but they're not stupid. And more and more we no longer completely own the night there.
It was no coincidence that the Camp Bastion attack happened on a moonless night.
A key realization: the enemy uses cheap night vision gear in the form of cameras that have night functions. When our IR lasers, our IR strobes, our IR illumination or our IR spotlights are radiating, they can easily be seen using cheap digital cameras. I recently told this to some Norwegian soldiers, who were as surprised as our soldiers to learn it. I learned this from the enemy, not from our guys. The Taliban even use smart phone cameras to watch for invisible lasers. The enemy in Afghanistan has been caught using cameras for night vision. It is just a stroke of common sense: I have been doing it for eight years since I noticed an IR laser one night in Iraq.A Norwegian trooper explained that one dark night in Afghanistan, they got ambushed with accurate but distant machinegun fire. When they turned off their IR strobes, the fire ended. When they turned the IR strobes back on, the fires resumed. When they turned them off for good, it was over.
Many of our people believe that the enemy does not use night vision. There was a time when this was true, but the war has matured and this is now false. If your firefly is strobing on your helmet, or if you are carrying a cracked IR chemlight, do not be surprised if you take accurate fire during a black night. When JTACs mark targets with IR lasers, or when aircraft such as Predators lase for Hellfire shots or for target ID, they look like purple or green sunbeams through night vision optics and they are crazy bright. You cannot miss them.
Pretty much any digital camera is sensitive to near infrared light (NIR) - so much so that manufacturers usually add on an IR cut filter to block most of it out...but most is not all.
You can easily check this by looking at a TV remote with any smartphone camera and you'll be able to see the IR pulses clearly. Likewise it's quite easy to see anyone walking around with IR strobes, lasers, or night-vision illuminators.

So Who Really Owns the Senkaku Islands?
Here's a good summary of of the history of the Senkaku islands and the claims of Japan and China over them. On the whole I'd say Japan has the stronger claim due to exercising actual control over the islands for most of the last century or so and the fact that the US returned them to Japan in 1974. Oh and we have this to look forward to if things get all shooty:
The United States occupied the islands after World War II from 1945 to 1972 and even though they do not have an official position on the validity of the competing sovereignty claims, the islands are included within the U.S. Japan Security Treaty. This means that if Japan needed to defend the islands, it would be likely to compel action by the United States military.
How To Save the Planet: Buy an AR-15
"It's like the health benefits of red wine or coffee. Is there anything an AR can't do?" No home or redoubt is complete without one.
I remember getting into it with Armstrong supporters who swore that he was absolutely pure and had never doped or used any chemical enhancements ever. But based on people I know and everything I've ever read, I've always assumed that everyone at the pro level in most every sport uses something - whether HGH, IGF, boutique steroids, exotic blood treatments, or things we haven't even heard of yet - all of which are difficult if not impossible to test for at the moment.
So of course Lance cheated - but then so did every other competitor and he was still able to beat them all. But according to a recent book Lance was also a champion of cheating as well:
The drugs are everywhere, and as Hamilton explains, Armstrong was not just another cyclist caught in the middle of an established drug culture -- he was a pioneer pushing into uncharted territory. In this sense, the book destroys another myth: that everyone was doing it, so Armstrong was, in a weird way, just competing on a level playing field. There was no level playing field. With his connections to Michele Ferrari, the best dishonest doctor in the business, Armstrong was always "two years ahead of what everybody else was doing," Hamilton writes. Even on the Postal squad there was a pecking order. Armstrong got the superior treatments.

Hey that's #6 on my list of absurd things we've been asked to believe since 11SEP2012! :
1) Ambassador was killed by"spontaneous" protestors with RPGs, mortars, and machine guns.
2) "Low profile" security in Benghazi was OK (in an area where random people allegedly walk around with RPGs, etc), despite recent attacks and warnings, and in no way reflects on Hillary, who is responsible for security there, even though sensitive intelligence information was also compromised.
3) The Egyptian failure to provide security, which resulted in our Embassy being breached, is not a reflection on what they think of the US or its President.
4) The President is not responsible for embassy statements, even though representing the US is literally their job, and he personally appointed the ambassador. Obama apparently heads a different US govt than they do.
5) Crowds screaming "Death to America" in 22 countries does not reflect an anti-American sentiment that would imply that US standing in the Arab world is the same as before or worse.
6) The existence of a short, amateurish, and obscure video clip is a reasonable reason for rioting, and said rioting is the fault of said clip's author, not of the rioters.
7) It is complete coincidence that it was 9/11, despite said clip being out for months.
8 ) There is a timeline for disputing US statements disrespecting free speech, and not following it is a "gaffe".
9) It's OK for the Pres to head off to fund raise in Vegas, and have his national security briefings mailed in, after the killing of a US ambassador, and during multiple attacks on US soil at various US embassies.
10) Bringing a guy in for questioning after midnight, surrounded by a dozen law enforcement officers and multiple news crews is a perfectly reasonable way to look into a sudden interest in possible white-collar parole violations, it is a complete coincidence that said individual had just appeared in the news for doing something that was completely legal, and it was no way an attempt to bully or intimidate anybody out of their free speech rights by the very same authorities who are supposed to be defending them.

The night vision thing was inevitable. Cheap IR sensors are becoming more and more common, and computing power in small devices is becoming increasingly powerful.
What's frustrating is when people complain about US military spending and say "The US spends X times our nearest rivals." The truth is that our rivals benefit from the very technology that our society develops and allows to flourish, and the gap between our capabilities and theirs quickly diminishes. I can recreate much of the Army's command and control capability with a netbook and a ham radio. It wouldn't surprise me if in a decade or two you start seeing miniturized ad hoc radar systems that allow insurgents early warning against UAVs and helicopters all run off a laptop computer and a couple of car batteries.

By that time, hopefully, we'll have the genetically engineered velociraptors with lasers attached to their heads. They'll recon and lase the target for the predator drones...then eat any survivors.

I was looking *very* closely at their LR-308 line when I came across RRA's LAR-8 which had a few advantages that edged it out for a slightly higher price (primarily the ability to fire both .308 and 7.62 NATO which, counter-intuitively, the LR-308 cannot reliably do) . So far as I know, DPMS is generally considered good quality, though, and isn't a fly-by-night operation.

The "copy" part works fine everytime, as far as I can tell, but sometimes when I press-and-hold to bring up the "paste" box all it brings up is an edit box instead. Is there some technique I'm missing, or is it just an annoying thing I'm going to have to live with?

I picked up a lot of followers by retweeting their stuff. I don't really follow-back, except for the Horde, because it gets to be too much to keep track of pretty quickly. Especially because you don't get just the tweets of the person you follow but their retweets as well. It can get overwhelming.

Picture a 30-second TV spot thus. Image of the idiotic "Obama flag".
Voice-over: "this is the flag the president and his party want you to rally to on November 6".
(fade to black, return slowly to image of Old Glory flapping the breeze .... then fade to photo of flag-draped casket at Arlington ... then to an old veteran and his grandson at attention/saluting a flag .....)
Voice-over: "THIS is the flag most Americans, my party, and my team want you to rally to. If you give me the privilege of serving as your president, I will defend and honor that flag, and the republic for which it stands,to the utmostof my ability. I am Mitt Romney, and I approve this message".

Amazon free app-of-the-day has been mentioned, but I'll second it - you can get some pretty decent apps that way. I've used the Dolphin browser - works well on Android. Battery Widget is a good visual battery tracker. WiFi File Explorer lets you see all your smartphone files on your PC, in a browser page. Makes it really easy to copy and paste stuff to and from your phone. And I use Handcent SMS for text messages - works better for me than the standard text program. I could go on and on, but there are some basics.

The histrionics and self-flagellation of the Frum/Brooks/Noonan wing of the party and the Luap Nor Kult swearing they are going for the idiot jr. party has me in awe. We face a group of sociopaths who will happily march lockstep to feed babies actual bullshit in the form of barack obama WRT non-apparent ability on the job because "unity" and every asshole with a keyboard and butthurt over not getting perfection from the GOP feels emboldened to wet the bed in crisis.
When one engages in civil war, or more likely in our case enforced rebellion you die if you screw the pooch. Hard enough to win when all gins point out of the FOB and into your lane, even harder when members of your fireteam shoot randomly out of their lane across the fob "to keep things real." It is hard to entrust such loyalty with matters of life and death in the extreme case.

Got a question for you all though. I have not been shooting for long. When I started it was with glasses with the right eye stronger and was doing ok. Recently switched to contacts with both eyes equal and now am shooting way left. I am assuming I have to learn to shoot with borh eyes open, but it feels so uncomfortable.
Thanks for your suggestions and BTW the preezy is TFG

I actually really like Nealon but I dug Macdonald. His "more funny" replacement of Colin Quinn didn't make much sense.

The story behind Norm being fired from SNL had to do with the guy who was head of NBC entertainment not being a fan of Norm's. He made Lorne Michaels replace him, but Lorne didn't want to because he didn't think anyone else could do it. The NBC guy said that Colin Quinn was funny, so he should host it. Lorne said OK, so he put him on until the NBC Entertainment guy got shitcanned. Supposedly, the guy didn't like Norm's OJ Simpson jokes because he was buddies with OJ.
Funny thing was several years later when he had his show on ABC, he was asked to host SNL and joked about getting fired. Here is the audio portion of the monologue.

chaos. The starbucks crowd will be some of the first to have their

Do they hear themselves?
--
Greta mentioned this too, saying the O administration wants people to know there was security in place. The smoke inhalation I suppose means they're saying the Amb did not die from direct crowd violence. These facts (if true) just raise more questions.
Although I don't think the admin has admitted publicly that the two dead SEALS were not part of the security team, I read that somewhere earlier today. So, if 3 people in addition to the Amb died, and two were the SEALS, then at most one of the five security guards died and 4 must still be alive.
Why are they alive and the Amb is dead?
Where are they now what do they have to say?
If he died from smoke inhalation instead of crowd violence, how did the 5 guards allow that happen?
Why didn't they too succumb to smoke inhalation?
Did they protect the Amb at all, or flee, or were they allied with the attackers?
Even if Hillary and Obama are counting the two SEALS as part of the 5 guards, that still means at least 2 guards lived.
So many questions. I guess we have to wait another week for the admin to come up with BS answers to these obvious questions. We still don't really have a timeline of events, basic facts about what happened.
These people are spectacularly bad at crisis management. I'm not even talking about their incompetence and deception. For their own selfish political survival and reputation, you'd think they'd handle things better.

Reports I've seen elsewhere say the SEALS were Spooks, not part of the security det.... as was the Ex Air Force guy.... they got caught at the site...
the Security det was run by a Brit company, who is trying to stay out of the limelight... because they agreed to the Clinton 'no bullets' rule.... or to paraphrase, they were worthless as they were unarmed contractors...
No bullets? no way for the security Det to stand up to people armed with automatice weapons, and RPGs (which are evident in pre attack pictures).

Oh that's right, I forgot about the no bullets (or rubber bullets?). Which negates the idea that they're trying to push now, that there was adequate security in place.
Still though, what DID the guards do? It was their job to protect him. Did they flee during the attack and leave him on his own? If it really was smoke inhalation why didn't they get him out of the building?
The continual lies and half truths are an insult to those who perished. I really feel for the families of those who died. I've never been a fan of Hillary's, but I thought she was more competent than what has been on display since 9/11.

"If you want to know who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize."

Whether fake or genuine it's incomplete. It's the enforcers who have the real power. Presently in Western societies the media are the enforcers. They decide whom to champion, what is acceptable and what is not. If anyone steps out of line the repercussions are massive.
What we are seeing now is the media's primal scream that we are not following their lead. In retaliation they are perverting news stories and doctoring polls.
