Okay here's my last minute hasty 22%-assed mostly duct-taped together ONT.

What 3 Weeks of 'Gaffes' Have Done to the Romney Campaign

And note that this is just Gallup's registered voters - likely voters are probably trending even more for Romney.

Was Everything the White House Said About Benghazi a Lie?

Well we did have a consulate in Benghazi and envoy Christopher Stevens was killed - but anything beyond that was mostly a collection of ever shifting falsehoods.

Jonah Goldberg on Islam, the First Amendment, and Yelling 'Fire'

It's really quite amazing. In Pakistan, Egypt, and the Palestinian territories, Christians are being harassed, brutalized, and even murdered, often with state support, or at least state indulgence. And let's not even talk about the warm reception Jews receive in much of the Muslim world.

And yet, it seems you can't turn on National Public Radio or open a newspaper or a highbrow magazine without finding some oh-so-thoughtful meditation on how anti-Islamic speech should be considered the equivalent of shouting "fire" in a movie theater.

It's an interesting comparison. First, the prohibition on yelling "fire" in a theater only applies to instances where there is no fire. A person who yells "fire" when there is, in fact, a fire is quite likely a hero. I'm not saying that the people ridiculing Mohammed - be they the makers of the Innocence of Muslims trailer or the editors of a French magazine - have truth on their side. But blasphemy is not a question of scientific fact, merely of opinion. And in America we give a very wide legal berth to the airing of such opinions. Loudly declaring "it is my opinion there is a fire in here" is not analogous to declaring "it is my opinion that Mohammed was a blankety-blank."

You know why? Because Muslims aren't fire, they're people. And fire isn't a sentient entity, it is a force of nature bereft of choice or cognition of any kind. Just as water seeks its own level, fire burns what it can burn. Muslims have free will. If they choose to riot, that's not the same thing as igniting a fire.

How To Break Up Without Faking Your Own Death

Trust me it was hard enough to fake your death back before the Internets and Facebook - today it's much, much harder and hobo corpses with appropriate matching dental work are few and far between.

Yes, I think that is a problem,” Clinton said. “That’s why I supported welfare reform, to change it from an entitlement system to a work-based system, to an empowerment system.” He said that U.S. entitlement spending is “not out of line with other advanced countries.”

Considering that the last study done a couple of years ago put Virginia as a +3 GOP state, and Obama in 08 had a +3 Dem turnout, the media polling has the state as +6 Dem, I have a gut feeling Virginia will be about +1 GOP this election, and Romney will win Virginia.

149 Charlie Brown's Dildo- as a general rule if there is an optical sight issue for an AR, Aimpoint is the answer. Unless you're building a long-range stick, something in the Mk12 SPR family tree, in which case a Leupold MR/T is the answer. Either way, put it in a Larue mount, zero it for quality ammo, and rock out. Pick up a copy of SGM Kyle Lamb's book Green Eyes and Black Rifles- A Warrior's Guide to the Combat Carbine. If you don't have the time or cash to get to a good carbine class (EAG, VTAC, Trident Concepts, whatever), it's a good start.

I know you weren't talking about me, and to answer your question. When looking at polls, the numbers that are "the bottom line" numbers are not always the right numbers. You have to look at the internals of the polls, i.e., the partisan split, age groups, etc. The Virginia polls are showing a +6 for the Dems in the partisan split, but Virginia is a +3 GOP state, so when you take that into consideration, Obama doesn't lead in Virginia, but actually trails. Another thing to look at is how the Independents are breaking, and they are breaking towards Romney. He leads in polling for the Independents, and has the same percent of GOP voters voting for him that Obama has Dem voters voting for him. That tells you that all things being equal, Romney leads.

@181

If Romney continues improving in the national polls, he will improve in the swing state polls. He can't be tied nationally (or even up on D+2-3 numbers) but down 5-6 pts in states that would fall GOP this side of a loss.

The swing states are swing states because they're a microcosm of America overall. There's nothing to suggest they'll behave differently to the national vote.

285 I just finished an A2 to A3 upper conversion due to the whole scope issue.  A2 scopes are WAY off the barrel centerline and thus have parallax problems as well as being bulky and in the way.  Still, they have scopes and scope mounts available... check Amazon... or you can usually get a new A3 upper for about $60: slickguns.  That's what I did... course you do have to buy some special tools to change them out but you might want to do that anyways

327 You wingnuts need to stop dumping on the msm for their coverage of Romney and Obama. Be fair now. Of course their coverage of Romney is more negative. When that horrible incident in Libya happened with an ambassador and 3 Americans being killed, Romney made a gaaaafe. The fact the Obama state department had a half-assed security that led to the deaths, and was completely unprepared for something bad happening on the anniversary of 9/11 in a Muslim country that is so volatile they had a coup a short time ago, none of this is as important as Romney's gaaafe.

The only good part of these shows is when you see presenters who are supposed to be good actors screw up reading 2 lines off a teleprompter. That's pretty entertaining.

Its not a tactic, its just the truth. The left controls the media, the entertainment industry, politics, the judicial system, the popular culture, and academia. They're the establishment. If someone wants to be really edgy and push the limit, they have to go right. I'm not trying to trick them into becoming conservative, I'm trying to open their eyes.
You want to have a really shocking piece of art? Paint a scene from the Bible. You want your movie to be really edgy? Show a happy white married couple that goes to church. You want to be a shocking comedian? Check out what guys like Nick DiPaolo do. You want to shock your parents? Dress nice and study hard; don't get a tattoo, get a Bible.
That leftist stuff is dull. Its played out, its establishment. Stop pretending that mocking conservatives and Christians is in any way new, interesting, or cutting edge.

It's amazing that leftist journalists don't appear to read a variety of writings, if for no other reason than to gather intelligence, to know what their opposition thinks.  This is why in the end, the right will always win.  We know our enemy much better than they know us.

442 Barney is a gay Jew. Just think of the guilt relief for voting for a gay Jew! Also, he is excellent at constituent services, and always appears to fight hard on behalf of the fishing industry and local unions. But the real issue is, the machine here in mass can generate just about any number of fraudulent ballots they need to. I have it on some good authority that in 2010, they were able to get their hands on over 40,000 unlawful votes for Frank. The new MA-4 is considerably more Republican. Over half of the republican reps and senators in the state legislature are from districts overlapping the new 4th. That's why they told 8 viable democratic candidates for the open seat to sit down and shut up, and moved a Kennedy in to steal it. As it turns out, I believe that Jo.Ke is going to run for Kerry's seat in 2014, so we'll have an open race again next cycle. My biggest decision before the new year is whether to run Olivier Kozlowski's SecState race for '14 or Phil Dann's county commissioner's race. kozlowski winning would be an amazing coup that could open up Mass to Republican candidates and break the power of the Democratic Machine here, but he's got about a 35% chance to win. Phil is a good friend and almost certainly a win, but the money would be less and county commissioner is less important to the big picture.

449 Ok, some confusion here on my part.

Swapping a compete upper for a new upper is a simple job.

Taking apart an existing upper and changing stuff on it, like, say a barrel swap, requires a vice block and a barrel nut wrench/multi-tool. I just c-clamp the vice block to a workbench, rather than use a vice.

I just wasn't sure which you were referring to.

As for NCStar, I wouldn't trust one for anything more than airsoft replicas, sorry.

450 I'm fairly confident that Romney will win, but I'm just a little terrified at the prospect, given the wholesale misrepresentation of the situation in the Establishment media. O's 47%, when confronted with the reality of President-Elect Romney, will surely feel the election was stolen. Things could get ugly.

478 My biggest decision before the new year is whether to run Olivier Kozlowski's SecState race for '14 or Phil Dann's county commissioner's race. kozlowski winning would be an amazing coup that could open up Mass to Republican candidates and break the power of the Democratic Machine here, but he's got about a 35% chance to win. Phil is a good friend and almost certainly a win, but the money would be less and county commissioner is less important to the big picture. Posted by: Truman North, iPhone moron at September 24, 2012 01:17 AM (I2LwF) The reason why the Dems always have candidates for higher offices that are actually viable is that they make sure that they have candidates who can win in lower elected offices. Work for the county commissioner, that is how we get candidates that become 50/50 for the higher offices.

Whenever I've had staff people working for me, I tell them this. If you have never replumbed a sink, how can you tell if the plumber is doing a good job or duct-taping that POS? You cannot effectively manage projects without having rolled-up your sleeves and worked through something similar.

True story -- when we bought our house in 1997, one of our first projects was to replace our concrete-slab patio with pavers. The 4' x 8' concrete slabs moved during the seasons depending on the moisture in the soil and were sometimes level with one another and sometimes 4" apart. We figured with pavers, there wouldn't be such a trip hazard.

So I looked into all the options and measurements and decisions to be made, and took notes, finally compiling everything into a 14-page document (with illustrations). And we went to find a contractor. Found one who had good references and a good bid, and gave him the job. When he showed up to do it, I gave him the 14-page document.

At which point (he told me later) he nearly quit on the spot. But he figured I was just a control freak but no different from some of the other egotists he'd worked with before. After about four hours on the job, he came to me and said, "how much base do you want? 2" would be enough to where you could drive a truck over it."

I riffled through my copy and replied, "page eight".

He worked a little more and, came to me and asked, "how do you want this side handled? -- there should be a bit more patio than the size of your door." -- and I replied, "page 2".

He did the rest of the job without asking me anything. Told me afterwards it was the smoothest job he did that summer -- even though he'd almost walked out on it at first.

549 if you don't care about the wood grain, just paint it and be done with it.

but if you have a nice door, you might want to bring it out.  a lot of grains raise a lot when they are wet.  so, as you neutralize you stripper you may find the grain raising.  if you sand the raised grain while it is a little wet you should get a really great sanded finish.

I fix dings by selecting the right color glue and mixing it with the dust I get by sanding the piece.

I like linseed oil as a base and artist colors in the little tubes for the tint.  you can make any color you want that way.  but one has to be careful with the rags -- linseed soaks rags will spontaneously combust.  I often put them in a jar with water and seal the lid.

I am a big fan of water-based polyurethane for a top coat.  for small projects I sometimes use spray cans of urethane for a top coat.

550 You cannot effectively manage projects without having rolled-up your sleeves and worked through something similar. The hubby got a new boss recently. All of her experience is with a completely different type of project so he is ... concerned ...

552 as you neutralize you stripper you may find the grain raising water dampened rag or water + murphy's wood soap damped rag or ???

Posted by: Adriane at September 24, 2012 12:16 AM (/OhbZ)

553 BTW -- you can get a good "instant print" of what your grain can look like by swabbing the wood with rubbing alcohol -- they higher % of alcohol the better.

554 we have some rubbing alcohol ... best use it before all of the world's rubbing alcohol goes to the new Chinese machines ...

I use a lot of water to neutralize.  I could probably use less but I am paranoid about making sure all the stripper is washed away.

Republican poll analysis: Romney winning with middle-class families

In fact, on every measure it is Romney who is winning the battle for the support of middle-class families.

Overall, Obama leads Romney by just 3 points on the ballot (50 percent to 47 percent) – which before we rounded up, is actually a 2.6 point lead and only up a half-a-percentage point from the 2.1 point lead for Obama in our last Battleground poll in early August.  In our latest poll  with middle-class families, which comprise about 54 percent of the total American electorate and usually split in their vote behavior between Republicans and Democrats, Romney holds a 14-point advantage (55 percent to 41 percent).  Middle-class families are more inclined to believe the country is on the wrong track (34 percent right direction, 62 percent wrong track), are more likely to hold an unfavorable view of Obama (48 percent favorable, 51 percent unfavorable), and hold a more favorable view of Romney (51 percent favorable, 44 percent unfavorable) and Paul Ryan (46 percent favorable, 35 percent unfavorable) than the overall electorate.  These middle-class families also hold a majority disapproval rating on the job Obama is doing as president (45 percent approve, 54 percent disapprove), and turn even more negative toward  Obama on specific areas; the economy 56 percent disapprove; spending 61 percent disapprove; taxes, 53 percent disapprove; Medicare 48 percent disapprove; and even foreign policy 50 percent disapprove.

578 I'm going to re-post that in the morning headlines.. it's too sweet!

I was arguing sampling on a lefty blog yesterday..  they feel they have Colorado sewed up.  But I got to looking into 2008 exit polls vs 2004.  It looks like evangelical Christians voted in smaller numbers in 2008, but went for Obama in a higher percentage than in 2004 went for Kerry.

So.. I don't know how well Romney is doing with these voters, but I'm pretty sure they won't be voting for Obama again.  If we can get them and other groups to come out in large numbers, we've got this race won.. although it will still be close.

Politico  must have  been another D+bullshit job if all these factors are in Romney's favour yet Obama is still up.
