Swinging the 2000 Florida Vote

Either I never heard about this or it got lost in all the wailing and endless recounts.

How campaigns try to sway polling results: "In a close race, the operatives are trying to manipulate the turnout through their paid and earned media. The earned media includes lobbying and trying to skew the public polls. Historically the most egregious case was the 2000 Gore campaign's lobbying the networks' exit pollsters for an early, and wrong, call in Florida. This suppressed the Florida Panhandle and Western state turnout." (Polls close at different times in different parts of the state, because the state stretches into two time zones.) "In our post-election Florida poll, we found that thousands of Panhandle Floridians heard the call and although their polls were still open for an hour in a close national race decided not to vote. Panhandle voters went two-to-one for Bush. The CBS early wrong call nearly triggered a national crisis."

And what worked before will be tried again:

What Obama and his allies are doing now: "The Democrats want to convince [these anti-Obama voters] falsely that Romney will lose to discourage them from voting. So they lobby the pollsters to weight their surveys to emulate the 2008 Democrat-heavy models. They are lobbying them now to affect early voting.

Confused? Then use this handy-dandy guide to predict what time your polls will close:

Federal Judge Says No Right To Secret Ballot, OKs Barcoded Ballots

Arguello said activists had not shown the plaintiffs had suffered or would suffer any specific injury that could be remedied by a federal court. She said that even if a ballot could be traced back to a specific voter, it doesn't show that a person's voting rights were violated, saying there was no "fundamental right" to a secret vote in the U.S. Constitution.

This may sound wrong but she's correct - there's no mention at all of secret ballots in the Constitution. In fact they didn't become common in US elections until later in the 1800s.

Quote of the Day: Churchill on Appeasement

After the 1938 Munich Agreement:

[D]o not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigour, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.

Prager University: Adam Carolla on Luck

Well a lot of people rely on 'luck' by just letting things happen to them rather than acting - and pretty much anything that happens to you without your choice is going to be bad. Here Adam explains why you're better off just assuming that you're unlucky.

Magic and Piracy

There's a problem with piracy among magicians and Teller of Penn and Teller is unhappy about it. And even when Penn and Teller do reveal a magic trick, it's still a level two con.

Among his many works, Steinmeyer wrote Hiding the Elephant, his best-selling history of magic. In it, he writes that the best tricks are a "collection of tiny lies, in words and deeds, that are stacked and arranged ingeniously." Like jokes, tricks should have little plots with a twist at the end that's both implausible and yet logical. You shouldn't see the punchline coming, but when you do see it, it makes sense. The secret to a great trick isn't really its method; the method behind most tricks is ugly and disappointing, something blunt and mechanical. (When Penn & Teller have famously exposed a trick, they've almost always invented a ridiculously poetic method and built the trick around it; by making their art seem more intricate than it is, they force the audience to assume that the rest of their tricks are equally complex. Penn & Teller's exposures are really part of an elaborate con.)

5 Minor Chores That We Make into a Big Deal

Cleaning a toilet

This one seems dreadful but it's literally a 5 minute job.  I think people are just grossed out because it's a toilet.  Honestly just wash your hands when you're done it's not a big deal.  We're talking 5 minutes, once a week here.  Is that so tough?

Emptying a Garbage or Taking It Out

Everyone hates taking out the garbage.  I know I do.  I can't stand it.  But why?  It's a two minute job.   It's really not hard.  Replacing the bag is a joke.  And yet all of us just let crap pile up day after day to avoid having to actually take it out.  Man we are some lazy ass people.  At least I am.

For some reason Mrs. Maetenloch hates, hates, hates vacuuming but I don't mind since it's pretty easy. So it only takes me about 20-25 minutes to hit the full house and I still get major chore points/nag waivers for this 'horrible' job. Win-win baby!

59 Vacuuming is exhausting in this house. Three stories. Long pile carpet. Three pets. I have to clean out the beater roller a couple of times per session which involves cutting the long collie hair out of the brush roller. Laundry *is* easy, but the ironing takes a long time. I enjoy ironing but it is time-consuming. Toilets are not a big deal, especially with those chlorox disposable brush thingies. I do wish my husband would clean the toilet in "his" bathroom. Garbage is not a big deal except when it is empty the litter box night. Then it's heavy and I make my man do it. Dishes not a big big deal... except I'm neurotic so I have to load the dirty dishes into the dishwasher. My husband does it too haphazardly. I hate emptying the clean dishes for some reason so I try to get him to do that on occasion. Clutter is the bane of our existence. I'm not great about sorting/filing papers, he's got tons of sports cards and books he's half-read and junk from work. It's annoying, but we're both the same so it will probably never change.

69 The Learning Channel used to show educational shows, and had to change it's name to "TLC" because it became one of a near infinite number of "reality TV" channels. ------------------- Seriously. TLC is where you go to stare at people. It wouldn't be nice to stare at someone as hideous as that honey boo boo mother or a family with eleventy-kajillion kids that you see while out shopping or to gawk about your neighbor whose house is so full of crap the city needs to be called. So TLC steps in and lets people stare and talk crap from the privacy of their own living rooms. And somehow gets the stared-at people to be okay with it and answer startlingly personal questions.

Oh, jeez, I hear ya, Y-not.  I am never, as long as I live buying another "bagless" vacuum cleaner.  And I vacuum the shit out of my stupid little shithole apartment every single sunday of my life, due to the hair-production specialists who I otherwise adore.  I don't think my brush roller even really works anymore, I just shove the fuckin' thing around regardless.  Life is hard.  My main goal is to die with less than $1000 in the bank.

89 I hate vacuuming. Yeah, yeah, it doesn't take that long. Still sucks. I think I mostly resent it because I started out with that as a chore while living with my dad who is just thoughtless about where he puts things---the vacuum wasn't the worst part; it was the "Dad, your shoes. Dad your papers. Dad your books" or having to spend at least as long picking up and putting away. Then grown up and cleaning up after toddlers is the same deal, only slightly less annoying because it's toddlers. But even living with older, neater kids it still blows. The noise bothers me, having to plug and unplug it bothers me, the whole bit. We put down laminate in most of the house last year and it's wonderful.

101 Yeah, I agree with Adam and logprof about the refs. I think the players and coaches are acting like pussies. Baseball teams have to put up with wildly different officiating over the course of 162 games. They adjust. Sure, the players sometimes say something, but they learn not to or they'll never survive at the plate. And, yes, the managers will do the arguing with the ump thing from time to time, but it's mostly for show and they get tossed. What we've been seeing are 300 lb guys IN ARMOR trying intimidate these replacement dudes who are doing their best under bad circs. And Belichek made a fool of himself yesterday imho. But the worst are the announcers who are so in the tank for the officials they are making the games unwatchable. We watched last night's game with the sound down and the New England radio broadcast of the game. They are ruining the product. Yes, it's annoying to have mistakes made, but what they are doing is compounding it many times. Rant off.

It has one, naturally, but the brushes seem less long, and less inclined to get into trouble, than any other vacuum I've owned. There are occasionally dog hairs that wind around the thing, but not that many. The thing is designed wonderfully in a lot of ways, including coming apart and back together really simply if you have an issue.

I don't know exactly why I have to pull entwined dog hair off the thing so much less often than with other vacuums, but I figure it's somehow because Dyson is a genius. I mean, the guy made a bathroom hand dryer that is actually a decent alternative to paper towels. He knows things about making airflows dance to his tune. Also, it's cool to watch the filth spin around in the chamber.

210 Romney needs to run an ad on Disney and programs popular among school age kids, promising if he's elected he'll get the gov't out of school lunchrooms.  Or maybe have Ann Romney say it.  Get the younguns to pressure their parents to vote R, so they won't have to go hungry any more.  Win for 2012, and good education for the voters of tomorrow.

The lunchroom issue is a concrete example of how people know what's better for themselves (and for their children) than the government.  It is literally starving children in the name helping them.

Instead of simply mowing vertically one week and horizontally the week after I mowed in sweeping arcs and curves which required fifty percent more time and drove him effin nuts. He never said anything since he was not more specific in his intitial request and my 'solution" was more effective in preventing ruts than what he wanted. he would practically be in a purple rage when he stepped out of his car and found his lawn mowed in a circle around one tree. heh.

251 More on my special chore hate -- When we moved here 10 years ago, with an acre of grass it was time to buy a riding mower. I went out and dumped $1100 into this Troybilt POS (made by MTD) that I'm still using. Despite my always maintaining the engine, it blows enough oil smoke on start-up to fog the whole neighborhood for mosquitoes. It throws it's main drive belt at least once a year, destroying the belt every time. That's $45 a pop for OEM.

Let me tell you, I am the world's greatest expert in replacing that g.d. belt. Various parts fall off at random. It eats a new battery every 2-3 years, and always needs a jump in between replacements.

I'm getting my money's worth out of it if it kills me.

Ouch. Shivery bad flashback. I'm not a lawyer, but as native English speaker with more vocab I got pressed into a lot of "translation" stuff for my Mom, even though she was fluent. I remember having to read OUT LOUD TO HER her entire living will and trust setup. Pages and pages and pages. Interrupted with requested repetitions of paragraphs, attempts at clarification when asked and with discussions about notating what she wanted changed. My throat hurts again just thinking about it. I better get some ice cream from the fridge. BRB.

Dick Morris has been saying this for days...the polling is being weighted by Media Pollsters deliberately to suppress GOP turn out.  There is no question when you see NYT and AP slanting polls Plus 13 Dem it is ridiculous.  That is why people we must get away from polls from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, PPP, Q-Poll and others.  They are in every way manipulating numbers.  Read that post on the Florida 2000 and read the pollster discussing the 2012 Polls it is amazing.  There is no doubt when you see vote for the GOP reflecting numbers from the 1960s that is a MASSIVE RED FLAG!!

We all know in our hearts that we have the numbers yet the drumbeat since the DNC has been Mitt is in trouble.....BS!!  It has not been the case....like RUSH said the pollsters will continue to manipulate the numbers to always show Obama ahead!!  No matter how much they must manipulate.  They only want the headline....NEW POLL...OBAMA UP 7 (never mind that plus 19 Dem sample...or record low GOP sample or oversample blacks or single women!!)  Ladies and Gentlemen the fix is in....WE MUST STAY FOCUSED...we have the NUMBERS VOTE!!!  We know we will win....Stop listening to the bias media...if this story does not tell you what is going on with 2012 then YOU ARE LOST!!

Goal suppress GOP and make us think Obama is Inevitable...LIKE HECK HE IS!!!  He is in Wisconsin for a reason....Nevada, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia and Florida as well...

Ralph Reed on TV tonight is being employed by Mitt to work with Evagelicals and this man is a MASTER OF THE GOTV!!!  He engineered Bush's defeat of Kerry when he energized the Evagelical Voters all over the place.  He mentioned that he has already mailed 51 million copies of the 10 most important issues and where Obama and Mitt stand....He has been lining up callers, door knockers and mailings....this GUY is the BEST!!  He shocked everyone in 2004 delivering states like Ohio, Florida, North Carolina and other for Bush.  Remember the MSM was stunned in 2004 but the turnout for Bush!! Who was responsible...THE EVANGELICALS!!

Reed said in 2008 McLame had over 8 million Evangelicals that STAYED HOME because they did not like him...and who lost???  McLame did not use Reed in 2008.  Reed said that will not be happening in 2012 and he said the overwhelming majority of Evangelicals have no problem with Mitt being Mormom....they are more concerned with Obamacare, the HHS mandate and the attack on Religious Liberty by Obama!

Reed said tonight...the MSM will be waking up the day after the election this year stunned by the turnout for MITT!! He said the same in 2004 and he was spot on!!  This guy is a GREAT ASSET to MITT....very smart to see Mitt employing Reed....I very much like!!

Reed said ads will not change the game...stories will not change the game...what changes the game....GOTV!! the ground game, calling, knocking and taking people to the polls....and Reed is the BEST!!

285 Al Gore hopes to show links between climate change and the effects of extreme weather worldwide with an online and social media-fueled event built around the idea of “dirty weather.” Gore’s advocacy group, the Climate Reality Project, announced Sunday that its second multimedia “24 Hours of Reality” event will occur Nov. 14-15 and bear the title “The Dirty Weather Report.” “We are in a new era where the ... extreme weather that is occurring is not fully caused by the natural cycles of time and natural events, but by dirty energy, so it is really important to articulate that and name it more precisely,” said Maggie Fox, the CEO of the Climate Reality Project, in an interview Saturday. Organizers call the November event part of an effort to counter the lobbying and financial power of oil and coal interests by using social media and other tools to engage people directly.

290 Obama has given up all pretense of being a leader, serious, intellectual or courageous.  Any MSM not calling him to task over his choice to go on the View while failing to meet with world leaders who have traveled to the US, following the terrorist attack murders of Americans, should be publicly shamed.

It's getting fascinating, really, to see how far the media will humiliate themselves and their profession for him.  I believe many reporters are hamstrung by their organization when it comes to reporting truthfully about O, but I'm surprised there aren't more renegades, people who will report anonymously just for the sake of being different or independent. Rebelliousness is human nature.  Undoubtedly many are earnestly in the tank for O but not 100%.  O is forcing the press to humiliate themselves on his behalf and some of them have to be resentful about that.

Quibble: there's no mention of the Internet in the Constitution, but I don't think the federal government can (constitutionally) force you to 'Like' TFG on Facebook, either. If the secret ballot is a necessary part of maintaining a 'republican form of government,' it should be constitutionally protected, the same way the right to bear arms or the freedom of the press now include objects and concepts that did not exist at the time of the founding.

328 Washington, DC – (Sep. 24) JunkScience.com announced today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been sued in federal court for conducting illegal life- and health-threatening scientific experiments on human subjects. Based on information uncovered by JunkScience.com publisher and public health consultant Steve Milloy through the Freedom of Information Act, the nonprofit American Tradition Institute Environmental Law Center (ATI) sued EPA in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Among other things, the lawsuit asks for: EPA to be barred from conducting illegal life-and health-threatening experiments; a formal investigation of EPA’s human experiments; and for regulations based on the illegal experiments to be suspended pending an investigation. “EPA has broken every law and violated every standard established since World War II and the Tuskegee syphilis experiments for the protection of human subjects in scientific experiments,” said Milloy. “That EPA administrator Lisa Jackson permitted this heinous experimentation to occur under her watch shocks the conscience,” Milloy added.

489 That EPA thing is fucked up. But weird. Looks like EPA wants tighter regs on exhaust fumes. So they want to say they are killing people. Problem is there's no evidence of that. So the EPA has been going around for years saying exhaust fumes are deadly, have to have tighter regs. But no evidence. So the EPA has recruited sick old people with asthma for studies that have them breathe in car exhaust fumes. They've been doing this for years. EPA is hoping the old people will get sick and die so they have their proof they need tighter regs. If the fumes really are deadly then this is Tuskegee Airmen level evil. They lied to sick old women to trick them into the study. There's no benefit to the sick, old people. Just the chance of illness and death. EPA's defense will be, hey, this stuff is safe. So EPA is playing both sides. Evil motherfuckers.

Mass hysteria in Seattle MNF tonight: a game was decided the wrong way because the refs made a mistake.

Green Bowl Packer DB had far more possession of the ball than Go Tate did. One ref says touchback one ref says touchdown and both refs missed the offensive pass interference against Seattle. Groan.

This is the nightmare scenario NFL wags have been worrying about: A Game was decided the wrong way because of one or more mistakes by replacement refs that Roger Goodell and Jerry Jones think are just fine.

Not.

When he calls in to Mark Levin's show they almost never talk politics, just sports, and I think it helps to establish that even high-profile guys like Mark are human and not the monsters liberal media caricature them as.

551 Yeah the Florida 2000 thing. I read that article and I recalled how the TV guys called the election for Bush, based on Florida results... then reversed themselves. Why? Well a call from Clinton apparently, telling them to according to that story, and it sounds all too plausible.
Whats really funny is that MSNBC recently did a story about how things would have been different with Al Gore had won. Which means they basically admitted that Al Gore lost. I know its been hard for them to get there, but they finally are getting to the truth.
Al Gore tried really, really hard to steal the election and failed. He was the world's worst sore loser. If there was any justice and any balance in the world, "gore" would be a verb for poor loser. Man, that guy really was a Gore. He sure Gored that up didn't he? Don't be so Goring.

I only use the premix stuff. The problem with a hand mix, even using a drill mixer head, is lack of sufficient shear force. That leaves agglomerates, or lumps if you prefer, in the mix. Even small lumps cause streaking and drag lines.

I never mix more than a small cereal bowl worth when patching up after electrical work.  Usually I start mixing it very loose, then sift in a bit more powder to get the right consistency.  Starting with a real loose mix seems to cut down on the clumping.

The NFL is much more entertaining with replacement refs. It makes the game...a game. Bad calls always happen, even with the regualr refs. They just happen more with the replacement refs.

Now, if it happens to my team, that's the luck of the draw. Games are won and lost on the tiniest of things each week. I'll take my chances.

I watch games I would usually ignore (like tonight) just to see the refs. What will  they do next? They hit the heights tonight. Great entertainment. That's what it is supposed to be, entertainment.

So imagine if the announcers didn't call out the refs on that play, and neither did any of the talking heads tomorrow, and instead everyone on TV and radio talked about Seattle's great play and how the Packers lost fair and square. Every football fan's head would explode, right? Yet that's the kinda crap we put up with thanks to the MFCBE every single day. It's amazing how sane we manage to stay regardless... Posted by: Adrian at September 25, 2012 12:23 AM (F4Szr)

Well, not every football fan's head would explode. There are fans here who are perfectly fine with an obvious rob, because their team won (or the team they hated lost). They're pure Democrat when it comes to football.

Vedic astrology shows that SCoAMF will very likely lose.

He entered a 19 yr. Saturn period of his life right around the time of the "you didn't build that" kerfuffle (mid-late July.). He was in a Saturn subperiod of his life when he experienced the only political campaign loss of his career, to Bobby Rush.

Other good astrological omens for November 6th (you could see that in the above image if you could read charts): Neptune (the planet of Marxism) and Pluto (the planet of Fascism) are both well-aspected by Saturn (which is literally a "restraint" on those planets.) Also, Obama and a whole bunch of people associated with him have a real shit transit around 1-20-2013 -- they're not gonna be happy to say the least.

Posted by: cm9000 at September 24, 2012 11:41 PM (vfB2N)

713 well that'd be good. NH always seems like a PA-type situation though where the GOP thinks it might have an opening but never wins in recent times (though obviously not quite as big of a gap compared to PA.) unless i'm forgetting something there was a recent poll showing Mittens up in NV and CO no, dunno what the source was

714 So I'm crunching my weight loss numbers and I think my wildest fantasy might actually occur.  I could very well hit my ultimate goal by election day.

Ho.  Ly.  Shit.

Now my ultimate goal isn't where I should be.  That goal will take a bit more work.  But I believe the two aren't far apart at all.

Three months ago I would have told you I could hit my ultimate goal around February if I pushed it.  Two months ago I was ecstatic at the notion that I could hit it by New Year's Eve...if I pushed it.

Let me put it this way.  My goals are set in three week increments.  My goal is ten pounds every three weeks.  Usually I'm pretty much on the nose, BUT the past two periods I've exceeded those goals by three or four pounds (4.2 pounds this go around as a matter of fact).

Now I just started a new weight loss period.  Three weeks to lose another ten pounds.  Election day is six weeks away.  Should this period and the next period go as planned that would be 20 pounds of weight loss.  At present I stand 23.4 pounds from my ultimate goal.

I repeat what I said above...

Ho.  Ly.  Shit.

715 Oh, and I've said this before, but due to all these changes in my life the likelihood is high that not only does Obummer win but it guarantees that the Mayan Apocalypse occurs right on schedule.

Sorry, guys.  It was this or diabetes.

716 They should really adjust all poll opening hours to a single time span so they open and close at the same hour GMT across the entire US.  I realize this might (shock! horror!) actually inconvenience some people, but it seems to me voting for the god damn president of the United States is kind of a big deal and people should be willing (and in fact, required by law) to put up with some damn inconvenience, like, say proving who they are.

717 Good work Rob. It is easier to lose than to keep off. Keep at it.

718 Danke schoen, CM.

Yeah, I'm pretty expert at gaining weight.  I've got this weight loss thing down pat.  Soon I get to learn a whole new thing!

But when I hit my goal I'm celebrating with a pizza and a Mexican Coke.

Cause by golly I want me a pizza and I want me a Mexican Coke.

719 Are the replacement refs really that bad? Or might we be seeing some measure of sympathetic guild-ism from the players and coaches?

Posted by: cm9000 at September 25, 2012 12:21 AM (vfB2N)

720 I don't see how the replacement refs could be so awful. After all it is still football. So I suspect the NFL version of office politics, and money are at play, but mostly money.

Posted by: cm9000 at September 25, 2012 12:30 AM (vfB2N)

721 Yes, a dead ambassador is unfortunate but you can't make an omelet without bustin' a few eggs. Am I right? Fist bump!

722 @720 geez man, you can't take one for the team??

Posted by: AussieMarcus at September 25, 2012 12:41 AM (RstsB)

723 There probably is a set of circumstances where a President calling a murdered Ambassador a "bump in the road" would be troubling, but we really think any right now.

724 725 I don't see how the replacement refs could be so awful. After all it is still football. So I suspect the NFL version of office politics, and money are at play, but mostly money. yeah it is still football but yea the replacement reds are pretty bad. some of that is just the length of time they have had to learn the rules which isn't much. and then there's the substitute teacher mentality a lot of players are using with them. And when they fuck up it eroded confidence in them and that accumulates. then there was the replacement that they had to pull in week two because he was a lifelong saints fan right before he was about to officiate the saints game.

732 politco poll just noticed on FOX: Romney leads O 55-41 among middle class voters. No wonder the left alsways seems to propose things that reduce the middle class.

733 Taking any supplements to help? Posted by: Navycopjoe (iphone5 snob) at September 25, 2012 05:52 AM (5tiWJ) Do ciagrettes and cocaine count? KIDDING! No, just cut out soda, beer, bread, potatoes and limited how much fruit I eat...ya know, all the good stuff. Alcohol was limited to wine but then further limited to the odd small serving of bourbon (probably saves money in the long run). It's all meat and veg, man, meat and veg. And walks. And some running. And a few other odd exercises I do quite poorly. Anyway, gotta do some work around this joint. Good night, ONT! Good morning, Vic!

734 "It's all meat and veg, man, meat and veg."

Whole grain carbs won't harm you, man - just sayin'. It's mostly added sugars and processed carbs that kill you.
