Is The Housing Crash Over?

Well certainly not everywhere - Florida and Vegas still have a long ways to go - but this chart does suggest that home prices are finally getting back to where you'd expect them to be based on long-term averages.

Basically we're back to 1998 levels. So it's as if the entire real estate bubble in the 2000s never happened. Well except that it did - leaving some people winners and many losers.

Obama: If You Slander Islam's Prophet, You Forfeit Your Ownership of the Future

Geraghty tries to apply some logic to Obama's speech and finds all kinds of disturbing and unanswered questions:

First, notice the trademark Obama passive voice. What does it mean, "the future must not belong to" a particular group?

Does it mean these people won't be around in the future?

That in the future, their viewpoint will be marginalized? Out of style? Unpopular? Suppressed? That sometime between now and "the future," they will have changed their mind? That at some point in the future, no one will feel like slandering the prophet of Islam? Is the First Amendment still in effect in this envisioned future, or has it been rewritten or modified on this topic?

...Another helpful hint: in a Hollywood movie, if you see a character who emphasizes that he and his kind are the future, and those who are different no longer matter, that character is probably the villain.

Quote of the Day

So, remember the old Milton Friedman/Ronald Reagan joke about how if the Soviet Union took over Saudi Arabia after a few years there'd be a shortage of sand?  Well guess what?  Venezuela, which has one of the largest proven oil reserves in the world, is having to import oil and petroleum products because their socialized oil industry is so corrupt and inept.  Couldn't happen to a more loathsome bunch of socialist twits.

Dirty Jobs' Mike Rowe Endorses Romney

...Today, we can see the consequences of this disconnect in any number of areas, but none is more obvious than the growing skills gap. Even as unemployment remains sky high, a whole category of vital occupations has fallen out of favor, and companies struggle to find workers with the necessary skills. The causes seem clear. We have embraced a ridiculously narrow view of education. Any kind of training or study that does not come with a four-year degree is now deemed "alternative." Many viable careers once aspired to are now seen as "vocational consolation prizes," and many of the jobs this current administration has tried to "create" over the last four years are the same jobs that parents and teachers actively discourage kids from pursuing. (I always thought there something ill-fated about the promise of three million "shovel ready jobs" made to a society that no longer encourages people to pick up a shovel.)

Joe Biden as a Waiter

Well he'd probably be an entertaining one - if you don't mind the occasional unintentional insult and screwed up orders.

Got your friends here, party of six. Lady in the hat. Great to see you. My name is Joe Biden and I'll be your server tonight. Lemme tell you a story. (He pulls up a chair and sits.)

...I get . . . I get emotional talking about José. This is a guy who-José gets here at ten in the morning. Every morning, rain or shine. Takes the bus here. Has to transfer twice. Literally gets off one bus and onto another. Twice. Never complains. Rain, snow, it's hailin' out there. . . . The guy literally does not complain. Never. Never heard it. José walks in, hangs his coat on a hook, big smile on his face, says hello to everybody-Sal the dishwasher, Angie the sous-chef, Frank, Donna, Pat. . . . And then do you know what he does? Do you know what José does? I'll tell you what he does, and folks, folks, this is the point I want to make. With his own hands, he sprinkles fresh house-grown rosemary on those potatoes (raises voice to a thundering crescendo), and they are golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside and they are delicious! They are delicious! They are delicious!

2 See, all of our problems go back to the very beginning of this country: The American Revolution. [large annoying wall of revisionist text snipped here] It was only after an unprovoked Colonial attack on Canada that the legitimate royal authorities began a naval blockade and dispatched large numbers of troops to reassert control.

21 Reposting my earlier burst of anger. If the Senate could stay Saturday to pass the continuing spending authorization, Obama could have made the time to sign it. Wednesday was the cutoff date. Now it's too late, contractors are already getting furloughed as of Sunday night, and I'm unemployed as of Monday. Regular Federal employees are furloughed too.

How about we expect that motherfucker Obama to actually do his job and sign one piece of paper? Oh, wait, I'm a racist. Preznitin' is hard, and I don't understand his struggles to survive on a VIP trip to New York. Fuck this motherfucker. He won't do his job, so I'm losing mine "temporarily." but the more they keep "saving" all these homes, the longer they keep the prices DOWN, the longer the value of homes stays DOWN, the longer it takes to sell one at a price that is anything close to what it should be . . . dammit, just let the market correct itself, quit pumping stupid money into it, further distorting the whole damn thing - STOP IT!!!!!!!!

152 Oh man, that sux NDH. Where do you work?

****

Big downtown icon.

I was hit with heart failure three years ago and never slowed down. Then I literally worked myself into the hospital three times earlier this year. My first hour back at work after my second hospital stay following my second Transient Ischemic Attack and the new boss calls me into her office, along with an H.R. rep, and writes me up for being out of the office.

The fact that I had the laptop in the bed with me while in the neurology ward meant nothing. I was on notice. After stepping it up and putting in even more hours... 7 days per week.... checking emails at midnight... forfeiting vacation days... all in an attempt to catch up from my absences, she called in H.R. and wrote me up for not having the skills to complete my job in an 8 hour day.

Now, I've been with the company for 18 years and haven't had a single mark on my file. Over the years I have been put in charge of multiple projects and had managed to work myself into management despite not having a degree. I had never been a clock watcher and had earned respect from many in the organization over the years. When I was discharged from the hospital following my diagnoses of heart failure three years ago, my docs told me to go home and rest, and I did. I took precisely one day off and then returned to work and worked a 12 and then a 14 hour day and was packed for a business trip the following day when my old boss called H.R. and told them that I was sick and wouldn't go home. So, H.R. is well-acquainted with my dedication.

Following the meeting with new boss and H.R., the stress and the exhaustion and the betrayal hit me and I ended up in the hospital a third time. My first day back in the office the bitch called me in and told me that I wasn't cutting it. I went to my office and snapped. Now, I had been having chest pains ever since the bitch started with the company, and everyone in our department was stretched thin, but it was those of us with health problems that cracked first.

So, at H.R.s encouragement, I took STD, which was a blessing but, in the meantime, they filled my job. Now, as of October 3rd, I go into LTD, so I'm blessed to have it but, once I am released, although still technically an employee of big icon, I won't have a job to return to.

They are cleaning house there as they've learned that, in this economy, they can hire kids with Ivy League educations and no experience and pay them less than they pay us and provide considerably fewer benefits.

I wasn't the first to go and won't be the last.

When it happens, $1100 a month in unemployment isn't going to go far.

I know a lot of people with more resources than I on government assistance , though, and that angers me. If you fuck up in life, take responsibility and make the best out of your situation. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.".”

I know the Founders invoked a "creator" but that "creator" cannot be the Christian God because nowhere in the Bible does He "endow" us with "inalienable rights". The Constitution enshrines plastic "rights" which are used to divide and conquer us. We placed man over God, and we are witnessing the inevitable consequences.

184 God forgive me, but:

My point is that parliament most certainly had the right to tax the colonies, and it's illogical to act as if they didn't just because they weren't "represented".

If you're implying something else, feel free to mention it, but the justifications for the American Revolution were hardly limited to taxes.  When Britain revoked Massachusetts's charter, it eliminated a democratic government that had existed, with some brief interruptions, for 150 years.  If they could do that to Massachusetts, they could do that to anybody and, whether they had legitimate legal grounds or not for doing so, the Americans were looking at the possibility of becoming a colony that was much more similar to Ireland if they didn't act while they still could.

Read the rest of the Intolerable Acts.  Those were justified grounds.

"Mr. de Lamartine once wrote to me thusly: "Your doctrine is only the half of my program. You have stopped at liberty; I go on to fraternity." I answered him: "The second half of your program will destroy the first."

In fact, it is impossible for me to separate the word fraternity from the word voluntary. I cannot possibly understand how fraternity can be legally enforced without liberty being legally destroyed, and thus justice being legally trampled underfoo."

My mom was a high school graduate, so who cares that she was there for so long and everyone considered her one of the most valued employees there?

My brother was threatened by a coworker, and then she (and her boyfriend) claimed he tried to attack her and got her fired. And then, they denied him unemployment because he was "violent". Fucking bullshit, but what can he do? Prove a negative?

232 Increasingly, even those who sympathize with the basic elements of the administration’s Middle East policy are connecting the dots. What they are seeing isn’t pretty. It’s not just that the US remains widely disliked and distrusted in the region. It’s not just that the radicals and the jihadis have demonstrated more political sophistication and a greater ability to organize and strike than expected and that the struggle against radical terror looks longer lasting and more dangerous than thought; it’s that the strategic underpinnings of the administration’s Middle East policy seem to be falling apart. A series of crises is sweeping through the region, and the US does not—at least not yet—seem to have a clue what to do.

Now, stupid, a real Christian might remember Christ's "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." Thus the idea of separation of Church and State has an explicit scriptural origin. Far from Christianity favoring some kind of authoritarian theocracy, the Son of God specifically separated the idea of secular authority from religion.

That is probably some of the best advice ever proffered here on the HQ, Niedermeyer. You should copy and paste it into a place you can look at it in the cool light of morning and then contact your state bar association for some references. A decent lawyer would be all over that shit.

While on STD my cardiologist ordered me to see a therapist to deal with the stress and she, in a very sweet way, said essentially the same thing.

The company did hold my job until FMLA expired, but I would never have had to take FMLA had I not been so brutally harassed at work in the first place.

Last week, one of my teammates, perhaps the nicest man and most skilled employee I've ever worked with, was let go. They are taking us down one-by-one and he, too, was killing himself trying to keep up. So, they changed his job just enough to reclassify it and then claimed he was no longer qualified for it. He got a severance package but my heart breaks for him because I already know what it's like to deal with the second-guessing and the doubts about your own performance and skills. It's awful. Throw in the sense of betrayal and it's just brutal.

He doesn't deserve it and my heart breaks for him. Now, the bitch has moved on to another of my past teammates.

Fire the old folks (not really old) and hire the yungins.

The sad thing is that they walk in thinking they are going to conquer the world and we old-timers know that in no time flat, they will be as beaten down and disillusioned as the rest. And without fail, they are.

Reality Check, you seem to assuming there's some shared assumptions between you and those you're debating--Namely that:

1. You and we know what God intended for a country's laws.

2. You and we agree on what God intended for a country's laws.

3. Despite Jesus's "render unto Caesar..." line, God wants the state and religion joined as one.

4. There is a God.

These are not shared assumptions.

Oh yeah, and 5. dumping a shipment of Tea into Boston Harbor is sufficient grounds for revoking Massachusetts's entire government and instituting the rest of the Intolerable Acts.

281 "Now, stupid, a real Christian might remember Christ's "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." Thus the idea of separation of Church and State has an explicit scriptural origin. Far from Christianity favoring some kind of authoritarian theocracy, the Son of God specifically separated the idea of secular authority from religion." That actually proves my point. Jesus said to pay the taxes. The Founders advocated the complete opposite. Before the American Revolution, no government in the Christian world practiced separation of Church and state. And besides, everyone knows that "separation of church and state" means the constant marginalization of religion on Constitutional grounds. In reality, the separation is just a means to pave the way for it's destruction.

2. I'm stating my opinion.

I disagree with your opinion.  So what do we do about that?

3. Every government in Christian lands before 1776 did not see fit to separate church and state.

If you want to say were not "entirely secular," okay, but barring that, again, the Dutch Republic and Switzerland allowed freedom of religion to an extent before the U.S.

4. If there is no God, where does the existence of things come from?

Dunno.  That proves there's a god...why?

5. It wasn't just the dumping, it was the whole lawless agitation that preceded it as well. The government repeatedly showed it was incapable of enforcing basic law and order, so it had to be taken under more direct control.

Again, I disagree.  Outside of smuggling or taxes, law and order existed just fine in Massachusetts.  It was those two areas that were a problem and those two aspect which they were justified in remedying (which they took steps to take care of through the Boston Port Act).  For that matter everybody knew the main players in the Tea Party and you could say they would have been justified in acting against them.  You can that without revoking the entire government or instituting the rest of the Intolerable Acts on every other colony.

If they had a problem with John Hancock, they could have acted against John Hancock.  If they had a problem with Boston, they could have acted against Boston.  Instead they revoked the entire charter of Massachusetts and acted against every other colony.

366 The NFL reached an agreement with the NFL Referees Association late Wednesday to end the referee lockout and are working on the paperwork now, according to a league source.

The league later confirmed the agreement.

A high-ranked referee told NFL.com and NFL Network's Jeff Darlington earlier that the officials are prepared to immediately begin work, noting he and many others have gotten access to all of the videos from the last three weeks of games that were distributed to the replacement officials.

While the referee said his colleagues would have liked to work a few preseason games, he says it isn't necessary to do their job.

370 What is "liberty" in practice except the right to ignore the one true path set out by God? Is liberty ever pro-religion? It seems to me it's always anti-religion, unless we're talking about strange cults. Posted by: Reality Check at September 26, 2012 11:16 PM (ELEDJ) It is my practice, my lord, to refer to you all matters concerning which I am in doubt. For who can better give guidance to my hesitation or inform my ignorance? I have never participated in trials of Christians. I therefore do not know what offenses it is the practice to punish or investigate, and to what extent. And I have been not a little hesitant as to whether there should be any distinction on account of age or no difference between the very young and the more mature; whether pardon is to be granted for repentance, or, if a man has once been a Christian, it does him no good to have ceased to be one; whether the name itself, even without offenses, or only the offenses associated with the name are to be punished. Meanwhile, in the case of those who were denounced to me as Christians, I have observed the following procedure: I interrogated these as to whether they were Christians; those who confessed I interrogated a second and a third time, threatening them with punishment; those who persisted I ordered executed. For I had no doubt that, whatever the nature of their creed, stubbornness and inflexible obstinacy surely deserve to be punished. There were others possessed of the same folly; but because they were Roman citizens, I signed an order for them to be transferred to Rome. Soon accusations spread, as usually happens, because of the proceedings going on, and several incidents occurred. An anonymous document was published containing the names of many persons. Those who denied that they were or had been Christians, when they invoked the gods in words dictated by me, offered prayer with incense and wine to your image, which I had ordered to be brought for this purpose together with statues of the gods, and moreover cursed Christ--none of which those who are really Christians, it is said, can be forced to do--these I thought should be discharged. Others named by the informer declared that they were Christians, but then denied it, asserting that they had been but had ceased to be, some three years before, others many years, some as much as twenty-five years. They all worshipped your image and the statues of the gods, and cursed Christ. They asserted, however, that the sum and substance of their fault or error had been that they were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively a hymn to Christ as to a god, and to bind themselves by oath, not to some crime, but not to commit fraud, theft, or adultery, not falsify their trust, nor to refuse to return a trust when called upon to do so. When this was over, it was their custom to depart and to assemble again to partake of food--but ordinary and innocent food. Even this, they affirmed, they had ceased to do after my edict by which, in accordance with your instructions, I had forbidden political associations. Accordingly, I judged it all the more necessary to find out what the truth was by torturing two female slaves who were called deaconesses. But I discovered nothing else but depraved, excessive superstition. I therefore postponed the investigation and hastened to consult you. For the matter seemed to me to warrant consulting you, especially because of the number involved. For many persons of every age, every rank, and also of both sexes are and will be endangered. For the contagion of this superstition has spread not only to the cities but also to the villages and farms. But it seems possible to check and cure it. It is certainly quite clear that the temples, which had been almost deserted, have begun to be frequented, that the established religious rites, long neglected, are being resumed, and that from everywhere sacrificial animals are coming, for which until now very few purchasers could be found. Hence it is easy to imagine what a multitude of people can be reformed if an opportunity for repentance is afforded.

Posted by: model_1066 at September 27, 2012 12:49 AM (yYKoR)

One word: triage. Make a list of issues, and prioritize -- and not just namby-pamby "whatever" stuff....prioritize *hard*. Your health and safety should be paramount -- fix the truck to the point where it is safe....street legal would be nice, but is secondary to safety. You might consider mothballing the basement remodel until you have a secure source of uncommitted funds (e.g. -- a job). You're not going to get a  job unshowered, so move the water-heater up the list and the walls down.

What frequently happens to people is that they fail to get in front of their issues and set themselves up to be bulldozed -- they lose their job and don't cancel their Netflix and cable, and that sucks up money that was needed to keep their car from being repossessed. Make the evaluation up-front, and be brutal about it, and you'll have the resources you need when the second-order ramifications come through.

454 I'm what's sometimes called a "birthright Catholic". Baptised yes, but that's the extent of it. Wasn't brought up in it, religion not even talked of in the home, didn't go to church except maybe a handful of Christmases, and even then mostly for the singing. And I'm agnostic now as I ever was.

But because our family came from that cultural background, I cannot help having Catholicism as a point of reference when it comes to thinking religion. Even if it was barely background noise, it still was what noise there was.

And the fact that I had so tenuous a connection to it lent it a certain romantic aura. Distance, as they say, lends enchantment.

So TFG doesn't have to "be" Muslim, or even have an acknowledged "soft spot" for Islam. Nothing about "what he believes" matters. Just because that's what he was exposed to, at that time, means his brain has and will always have an Islamic shaping when it comes to religion. And since to a Muslim religion impacts everything, then ....

Cthulhu had some great advice there.  I'd add one thing to it, that I learned from my OCD parents when they were fixing up their house.  Put together a "house book" that separates each room into its own project.  Then put together a plan for each room that you can work on your time.  They can be little projects and/or big projects but the ultimate goal is to make progress in each room every day/week/month.

Unfortunately I'm failing miserably at following my own advice lol.

What's the rule outside the ring? I always wondered how someone could body slam an opponent through a folding table.

Posted by: ErikW at September 27, 2012 12:50 AM (p5Smc)

In a regular match, there's a ten-count outside the ring with disqualification and match loss as the penalty.  But part of the act is that the referee has wide leeway on that.  And the referee's most important skill is to avoid observing bad behavior at key moments.

There are such things as tables matches, where victory is awarded to the wrestler who is able to break a table by propelling his opponent through it.

That is great advice, both of you!  I don't have many expenses to trim, and don't need to drive much at all to get the basic stuff done because of my location.  I have enough socked away to get everything done with the remodel and keep the bills paid for quite awhile without touching retirement money, but I guess my problem is that with everything happening seemingly at once, I'm kind of overwhelmed.  Especially since it's hard for me to put that accident out of my mind...I need closure (hate that word) so I can concentrate on other things.  I mean, I don't feel guilty per se, but still really awful because this guy will never look the same or walk the same.  And here I am whining about front end damage and making my house nicer.  Sorta like survivors guilt?  I don't know....

I should have been clearer -- it's not just about trimming expenses, it's also about trimming your attention, your worries, your peace-of-mind. Make a list, pick the three most important things on it, make #4 "update this list", and don't fret about #5 and below until you accomplish 1-3. Having 20 "super-important" things is a recipe for being freaked-out and ineffective. Slash! Burn! Drive your concerns before you and hear the lamentations of their women!!!!! When you finish three things, you can review the entire list and pick another three.....but there will be fewer then.

562 Problem with the Brady call always has been that Brady had pulled the ball back and was holding it in both hands against his chest when he fumbled.  All the photos confirm that (see Google images).  NFL just circled the wagons like they did last week.

Working on it -- up to 380 on the parallel "catch-up" tab. How goes with you? Ride any TPAKTOPs lately?

564 "And besides, everyone knows that "separation of church and state" means the constant marginalization of religion on Constitutional grounds. In reality, the separation is just a means to pave the way for it's destruction."

Sorry but the facts in evidence contradict this.

565 Zakn - here's a virtual $20 from me, bet on the Vikes to win the SB.  Should be pretty long odds = PAYDAY!.  Really, have fun.  It's like a circus for adults.  Good times in small doses

568 I think Howard the Duck ruined what little career Leah Thompson had.

569 While I loved much the first sparkly stabbin' heel pair of boots, I own the second pair, or ones close to them.

Leah Thompson is one of those actresses who I can never remember.  I get her confused with Mary Elizabeth Somebody and Mary Louise Somebody Else.

575 Brad Parker dies with his sticks in his hands...and the band played on.

Oblivious. That's real ensemble, Esmeralda. "Live" concert in Brazil.

They didn't notice the percussion was missing. Even the deaf feel the percussion.

Disco "revival" -- hopeless even with a defibrillator. RIP whoever he was.

578 Damn....check out the pic. How does the band not see this? ...unless this guy regularly gets sloshed and passes out on stage. John Bonham would not approve. http://alturl.com/9f5tz

579

Ah. The band probably just kept going, under the usual rules on stage and didn't see what happened. You've usually got your hands full, playing something and with cursory glances at the drums, they might have thought he was just ginning around with the kit, for some reason (broken pedal, etc). At least he went out on stage. Too bad it was disco, I suppose.

Posted by: otho at September 27, 2012 01:26 AM (yBF/9)

580 Just can't see how that simple, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 disco beat with the constant hi-hat missing wasn't noticed immediately by the band.

581

Posted by: Icedog at September 27, 2012 05:32 AM

They probably did.  You just play on if someone drops out completely and the drums are (usually) behind you. They probably didn't see him collapse and when looking back to check, might have thought he was dealing with a major kit malfunction when he was slumped like that. They likely just glanced at him, then turned back to the audience, in order not to draw attention to the drop out.

Posted by: otho at September 27, 2012 01:42 AM (yBF/9)

582

The position he's in shown in the photo looks pretty close to the usual thing when the drummer is fucking around with the pedal or stands.

583 "Howard the Duck!" Yay! That film is like a guilty pleasure for me -- I know the movie is terrible, but if it's on I have to watch it.

584 Talk about the obvious. Mention food to kids and their brains light up anticipating pleasure. And people "like" their habits. As if that's anything new. So Dr. Bruce wastes funding to rediscover the wheel, and brands her rediscovery with a catchy line -- save the children! pfft

"The brains of children are 'imprinted' with food logos," said Dr. Amanda Bruce who led the study. "Without the necessary inhibitory processes to aid in decision-making, youth are particularly susceptible to making poor choices about what to eat."  -- "I'm Lovin' It" by Makini Brice @ medical daily

"The necessary inhibitory processes to aid in decision-making" is called responsible parenting. But then, the State intervenes when parents exercise parental responsibility, the authoritarian Statists claiming first rights to our minds, bodies and lives.

Moochelle's kid's school menu raw broccoli sticks without Ranch Dressing gag anyone who isn't craving broccoli. You know who answers the White House calls at 3 a.m.? The White House Chef: MORE FRIES for Moochelle on the double! She'd tell you that potatoes come from Fries she orders planted in her garden.

587 "SPAIN must now contemplate the real possibility that its plurinational state, which replaced the suffocatingly centralist Franco dictatorship with highly devolved regional government, may break up."

David Gardner, London, Financial Times

Would Gardner willingly admit that Britain is a plurinational state?

As if the Basques in Spain pose a greater threat of secession than the Irish in Britain.

Anyway, vilifying the emphasis on local governance is exactly what to expect from a London financier. As if what Spain and France really need, and the world needs, is the British Constitutional Monarchy to set things right. So fall in line.

True enough, our initial American experiment realized that "balance" between Sovereign States and the Federal union of States required "balance" in order for mutual survival. And since, to the extent that the Federal has become authoritarian, completely dismissing States Rights, America has lost its balance, becoming top heavy. And the heavier the top gets, the less balanced stability, ironically for those who never believed in the endowment of Natural Rights in humans, top feeders choosing abuse of power "because they can" and bottom feeders conversely choosing slavery "because they can" get those so-called "entitlements". And the middle class is the Forgotten Man, unconsulted, disregarded, the Forgotten Man who pays the taxes to fund the entitlements that the taxpayer is himself denied, the taxes that fund the pirates on top.
