I was pleasantly surprised to be able to get most of these without having to think too hard. How many can you name?
(Answers below the fold)
Thomas Sowell on why redistribution always results in poverty:
You can only confiscate the wealth that exists at a given moment. You cannot confiscate future wealth -- and that future wealth is less likely to be produced when people see that it is going to be confiscated.
Is It Racist to Call Obama-Phones 'Obama-Phones'?
Yes - says the Atlantic's Elspeth Reeve (you may remember her from her fabulist husband, Scott Beauchamp):
Let's start by saying it's racial. The Obama Phone video belongs to a genre popular on conservative blogs in which poor people, usually black, confirm conservatives' worst 47-percent fears by saying they can get something for nothing because Obama's in office. The message is, "Here's what Obama's supporters really look like."
Well except that the term had become so common that even one of the providers referred to it as such in 2010 press release.
It's been known to drive some men to insanity but John Crace harnessed the vajayjay-crayzay to produce art:
As I began my research - I cannot recommend the findings of Dr Pfaus's MRI scans of the cervix too highly - I began to make some remarkable discoveries. A vagina that is neglected can easily fall into a deep depression; indeed, I encountered several that had self-sealed in an act of suicide. Meanwhile, a pampered vagina is capable of acts of great creativity. It is a little-known fact that Edith Wharton wrote the House of Mirth with her clitoris. And while it is true that the vagina may sometimes become addicted to her own happiness, this is something society ought to celebrate, rather than control with a strict 12-step programme that insists on submission to a male God.
...I had experience of this directly when a male friend, whom I shall call Neanderthal, offered to host a party in celebration of my vagina. "I've made some vulva-shaped pasta that I've named cuntini," he laughed. I gasped as I noticed he was also serving champagne out of deliberately phallicised bottles and had not even had enough respect to circumcise the sausages. My vagina went into a three-year spasm during which I was unable to do anything except write to Ban Ki Moon and insist that verbal insults to the vagina be considered a war crime.
And Florence King delivers some classic snark on Wolf's giney as well:
Naomi Wolf's new book makes going back to the womb sound more like going through a car wash. We are knocked down by streams of gushing hormones, we slip and slide on slick layers of lubrication, we are thrown to the floor by violent throbbing, we collide with G-spots, we are challenged by a clitoris demanding "Who goes there?" and yanked in by a cervix with a strength more often found in bar bouncers.
...Far from saying anything new, this oleaginous mess of a book is a reprise of the feminist heyday of the Seventies, which Wolf calls "a pretty good decade for the vagina." Much of it reads like The First Sex (1972), by Elizabeth Gould Davis, who claimed that in the era before recorded history, people worshipped goddesses, matriarchy reigned supreme, and women, the dominant sex, dropped their babies in birth buckets during pit stops at the chariot races while passive, adoring males chewed on umbilical cords like beef jerky.
Oh Goody: Code Pink Going To South Waziristan To Protest CIA Drone Strikes
Seven Members of Veterans For Peace are part of a 40-member delegation organized by Code Pink and planning to be in Pakistan between September 28th and October 10th. VFP members Leah Bolger, Dave Dittemore, Bill Kelly, Jody Mackey, Rob Mulford, and Ann Wright will meet with drone victims' families, elected officials, tribal elders, and residents of South Waziristan, where U.S. drone strikes have killed thousands, while injuring and making refugees of many more. Code Pink's Medea Benjamin is an associate member of VFP
Well I'm sure hilarity will ensue followed by a growing understanding on both sides that we're really not all that different under our pink floppy vagina suits after all. Or maybe not:
Yeah, the Taliban just love them some more so called NGO's necks to saw off, before they rape/sodomize them. Hell, they may even make it onto YouTube in a hostage video. Canadian and owner of Jihad Unspun, Beverly Giesbrecht (aka Khadija Abdul Qahaar), WAS a Taliban sympathizer. She died while in their captivity.
Mona Eltahawy: It Was Civil Disobedience - Not Free Speech!
So now she admits that spray-painting over public posters is actually against the law - but that's okay because she's civil disobediencing:
Some New Yorkers have called 311 to complain about the racist ad, some engaged in civil disobedience. Find your way to say #FuckRacism
- Mona Eltahawy (@monaeltahawy) September 27, 2012
And Aaron Worthing talk about what civil disobedience really means:
In Dr. King's case that seems reasonably applied. I mean technically, the law wasn't unjust in the way it was written, but it was being applied unjustly, but I think people can consider that a reasonable application of his principle. But what is the unjust law here? The law against defacing property? The law against graffiti? Because that is what she is being charged with violating. I asked her this question:
You are claiming civil disobedience now? okay what unjust law did you refuse to obey? are anti-graffiti laws unjust? @monaeltahawy
- Aaron Worthing (@AaronWorthing) September 27, 2012Oddly she has chosen not to answer me.
Why Aircraft Carriers Still Matter
Every few years some analyst declares them obsolete yet they keep on sailing because they're so versatile and effective:
Moreover, governments find a way to use aircraft carriers that doesn't involve high intensity combat against peer opponents. However expensive they may be, U.S. carriers have proven infinitely more fungible than the array of missile boats, short range submarines, and advanced missiles that the PLA has deployed to counter them. A U.S. carrier can show the flag outside the Strait of Hormuz, support relief operations in Haiti, or kinetic military operations in Libya, while an armada of DF-21D ASBMs can do little but sit and wait.
This is why states continue to build (and buy) aircraft carriers even at great trouble and expense. A carrier may never run the risk of an anti-ship missile during its long lifespan, but it will likely contribute to the national interest in some fashion.
Nothing quite focuses a person's attention like a hostile air base parked just off-shore.
More human than human: AI Game Bots Pass Turing Test
You may have been pwned by an AI:
For five years, the annual BotPrize competition has been using a variant of the Turing Test known as a "Computer game bot Turing Test" to challenge programmers, researchers and hobbyists to create a bot for Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2004) that is indistinguishable from a human player. Fittingly, in the centenary year of Turing's birth, not one but two teams have finally claimed the prize by achieving "humanness ratings" of over 50 percent. In comparison, human players received an average humanness rating of just over 40 percent.
Well us biologicals do have creative and repetitive cursing on our side...for now.
Well this sure seems like one. On the left is a picture from Mars and on the right is a stream bed from Earth.
The 1982 Victoria's Secret Catalog

The East St. Louis mayor, Alvin something, has decided to search everyone everywhere and to ban red and blue as gang colors. He was vehement about needing no particularized suspicion. When asked about the Constitution he went sort of Charlie Gibson.
I like the goal. But I'm pretty sure Alvin didn't stick the landing, legally speaking.
And would it be importune to note that a Cracker-American mayor who did that would be flayed alive in the media as a racist?

That remains to be seen (I hope you're right).
But if he doubles down on this, and wins, then really, all bets are off for any kind of hopeful future.
My intuitive sense is that Romney will win on Nov. 6, but this is surely one of the screwiest elections I've ever seen.
My intuitive sense of elections has been right every year since 1976, when I first starte voting.

Horseshit.
Romney is leading consistently with independent voters, but you're going to tell me Obama's base is going to be so fuck crazy EPIC that it will overcome that and produce an Obama landslide greater than 2008?
Really? What's the assumption, that being unemployed for 4 years will give them plenty of time to get to the polls and vote for Barky en masse?

Let's start by saying it's racial. The Obama Phone video belongs to a genre popular on conservative blogs in which poor people, usually black, confirm conservatives' worst 47-percent fears by saying they can get something for nothing because Obama's in office. The message is, "Here's what Obama's supporters really look like."
----------
The only person I've ever heard use that term was a welfare recipient. The inventor of the term was probably someone at the welfare office. I don't use the term, or even type the term as I haven't typed SCoaMF's name since he won the election, and the couple of times I've been forced to say it was quite digusting.

Latest outrage to be ginned up on NBC (not MSNBC) is that the Army and Marines are full of rapists and every other woman who served in Iraq was raped while in uniform. Even the fat porky homely ones. Saw a clip on NBC about this before I turned off the TV for the night.
Whatever, it's the media plan.

Medved was talking about the polling skews today, and I think that's big. His show is big with independents, and he has credibility with them. Anyways, he pointed that the polls are also assuming about 20-25% lower turnout among evangelicals in comparison to 2008. I hadn't seen that pointed out here, but does anyone believe Romney will get less values voter turnout than McCain did? Why, the Mormon thing?

The loss information voters tend to split the difference over public debates.
So if Obama calls you a racist and you say "That's not nice" the undecided voters you are at least a bit racist.
Calling Obama out as a liar works the same way. In fact, Republicans should stop pussy-footing around in general.
Every Democrat should be getting tagged as a failure for the $16T debt and depression that we are in. And rather then trying to clarify the point to be fair, KISS - Obama + the Democrats destroyed the economy with hand outs to their friends. Leave the lefties to argue it isn't fair.

U.S District Judge Timothy Burgess granted Palin's request for summary judgment, finding that activist Chip Thoma failed to provide the evidence necessary to support his claims. Palin's attorney, John Tiemessen, said the ruling means that, as a matter of law, no valid claims stand, and it should lead to dismissal of the case.
Thoma's initial lawsuit was partly based on a leaked draft manuscript by Frank Bailey, a Palin aide during that period. Bailey's book claimed Palin aides "went into discrediting Chip overdrive" after Palin expressed frustration with complaints she took as an attack on her family being in Juneau. For part of her tenure, Palin had gotten flak for not being in Juneau enough, or full-time.
Burgess said excerpts from the book could not be considered in the motion for summary judgment for several reasons, including that the passages are inadmissible hearsay. He said Thoma lacks the personal knowledge to authenticate the statements made in the book.

I saw that thing about Reed having twice as many evangilicals' cell phone numbers as Obama had in 08.
Liberty University puts out a magazine about 3 or 4 times a year that is inserted in papers around Virginia. A couple of months ago, Mittens was on it and it detailed his commencement address. This month's has some sweet little honey on the cover. I have not read the article yet, but it may get treated like the Victoria's Secret catalog that I wore out in 82 and 83.
The MSM keeps pushing the "Mormon" meme, but forget that evangilicals might actually like a man that doesn't smoke, drink, cuss and is a family man in the White House.

Do you know where we got the term "fisking" from? It was from when Robert Fisk went to visit Pakistan and was surrounded by and brutally beaten by Muslim Afghani refugees He wrote a column all about how he had it coming for being a white man and they were just acting out their aggression on him for centuries of oppression. It was abjectly retarded.
Andrew Sullivan, back before the drugs ruined his sanity and he blew a gasket over homosexual "marriage," tore Fisk a new one, line by line, and it was so epic that the term was coined as a result.
These people don't learn. They're beyond it.

We need to have a frank and honest discussion about gun cleaning,
People do way, way too much of it.
Wipe the salty sweat from the weapon.
Wipe out the grime.
Run a swab down the barrel (once!) to get the crud and to lubricate it.
Oil lightly.
And that's it.
Stuff with gas operating stuff may need more, but I have never had a problem with any weapon because of under-cleaning.

People seem to be doing much less social interacting than they used to. Started getting that way in the 90's and has increased in the last decade or so. Up to and through most, if not all the 80's, there was a greater emphasis on gatherings, with social ettiquette etc. This is in regards to the "trend setting' acene, mostly, but it translates elsewhere through flow on.
There was more in the way of live music venues back, amognst other things and face to face interaction was a bigger deal. These days TV seems to be more of a dominant thing. There wasn't that much on TV back in the 1980's. Now, there's a lot of stuff on TV. Not much good stuff, but lots of it. The internet and whatnot, has reduced social interaction (real interaction). Reality TV, "urban" schtick and a bunch of things have combined to create a culture that is more about you, by yourself. This and a kind of whirlind of fashions where nothing really dominates (except "urban"), sos it's just sort of like... "fuck it".

Interesting. Is it because .22 is dirtier than center-fire?
I only have one .22, and it's a Colt from the 1990s. Weird pistol, but the grip is great. I don't fire it that much, so I don't know whether it is reliable.

No joke, and at 4 bucks per it gets kinda spendy. The Cobras were blue with white, but the Mustangs were white with blue. I love the story of the Cobras, him telling Ford "I've got bodies if you have engines" and telling AC "I have engines if you have bodies"

A bit droopy, but not too bad. We did 4 days of Disney, I drove home yesterday, and today I spent 5 hours in the garden trying to make sure everything will make it. Plus got the luggage back into the attic, laundered, caught up with the backlog of mail, paid bills, restocked supplies....
Truth be told, though, it's the 4 Disney days that really kicked my tuchis -- the drive and aftermath were just gravy.

I've found that instead of oil, liberal use of spray silicone does a fine job of lubing a weapon. It's inert so it doesn't react to anything, DRY, so you don't gather dirt if your hunting, etc. in shitty conditions. And it makes cleaning easier, seemingly.

The Republicans down there usually vote in full force, even though they know everything is hopeless. Henry'll probably win, but I think he's sweating a little. Interesting tidbit...in the President block of the form, Romney/Ryan are listed on top. I assumed they would list candidates alphabetically to avoid any controversy. However, my home state is Texas ....and they don't really give a shit about appeasing liberals in the state.

Tupac wasn't a big part of Digital Underground and wasn't with them long. Think of it as a side gig (though more like to keep him out of trouble) as he tried to build a solo career which definitely payed off for him (never a fan of his)

i had a friend who did that too. it was pretty awful. most of them were more interested in me. their life stories were frankly horrifying and had a child wrap itself around my ankle and beg me to be her mommy. i felt so bad. I had been a really strict mean babysitter that day. and i guess i still seemed nicer and made the kid feel safer. i often wonder what became of that poor child. Those were some screwed up people there.

The worst experience I ever had a guy's house was when I visited a gamer buddy at his home. His three little kids were there, and they had that big eyed silent stare like starving third worlders. I had some fries I'd eaten most of on the way over and sat down eating them and they all gathered silently in front of me staring at my food without a word like squirrels. I didn't want to give the kids any food without their parents' okay and was starving so I ate it all.
I didn't say a word to them, but later on, the youngest girl curled up against me and went to sleep like I was a security blanket. I got the sense that their parents treated them horribly and they were desperate for anyone who'd not be that way. I never went back, and never saw the guy again. It still makes me think back and feel sad.

The university founded by President Thomas Jefferson in 1819 beat 100 other colleges nationwide for the top honours, NBC reported.
Runner-up was the University of Southern California, followed by the University of Florida.
Rankings were based on scores in three categories: sporting life, nightlife and sex life, Playboy magazine said in a statement.
University of Virginia ranked 16th, third and second in those categories, respectively, WTVR reported.
While students at UVA are likely impressed by the ranking, university administrators are not happy and they are demanding a recount.

So we're over at his house, and he introduces us to his wife (young, really pretty, sad seeming) and his daughter (maybe 13, cute, and even more sad and wouldn't look anyone in the eye). He then proceeds to basically hit on his daughter, pulls out a penthouse and goes into graphic detail about how cool a position of a woman is in there and what he'd do, and so on.
I was dead certain he was molesting that girl, but I didn't know what to do, that time I really should have called the cops.
Worst part of the story: that guy was accused of rape by a messed up girl, and he got off because he was at work the day she said it happened. Did he do it another day and she just screwed up the calendar? Probably. I never went back to that guy's house, never talked to him again and he lived a few blocks away.
That girl... I only hope she's okay. I guess the wife divorced him eventually. I hope he's in prison or in hell.

I live in a swing state and I Just watched an Obama ad that was effective. He used the 47% quote.
Why wonÂ’t Romney make one in kind?
He has all the raw material.
Obama laughing at “shovel ready”
Obama saying “You didn’t build that”
Obama promising to “cut the deficit in half”
ThereÂ’s moreÂ…
STRING ALL OF THOSE CLIPS TOGETHER AND RUN THAT AD ALL OVER PRIME TIME.

Soreness goes away after a while, especially if you are getting enough water to keep the lactic acid from building up.

The salty tears of orphaned children!>>
Well I hope that the rest of us can start working out after Nov 6th then. Since if things go right salty tears will be washing over the nation.

Variety is the spice of life -- if you're not feeling the burn enough on one set of exercises, change it up a bit.

The gym we go to is kind of a dive. It's not a Gold's or any place like that cause the ones around here are, judging from what I've gathered through various places, kinda crooked and eager to rip off their customers. I picked this place cause my buddy goes there and cause the owner takes cash.

even better. avoiding injury. check. avoiding the pay for year at a time shit. check.
just make sure you take time to work your trunk/core with all those horrible crunches and other boring shit. get some cardio, too and you got the whole works together. then all you have to do is stay with it. after a few months your body will adjust and you won't ever want to miss a day.

"flight risk" the judge says. He's NOT being detained over the video...or so they say.
Flight risk to where? Staying in the US is probably his best chance to stay alive on the planet, unless he could wrangle a gig at the south pole. Where the fuck would he go?

Bare structure, no piping, no wiring...but it looks beautiful from the outside. They should start renting rooms to "urban campers" interested in a "rustic elegance" ambiance.

"Interest levels on France's debt are currently at a record low as investors look for safe havens away from Spain and Italy."
France, run by a commie, is a "safe haven". Wrap your head around THAT.

It's all about what bonds are next to be monetized by central banks. MBS yields are about to drop below Treasuries now that the Fed is buying them.
We can talk about the moral hazard of workers on the dole, but that's only half of the problem. Investors are also on the dole.
In a healthy economy, investors and workers team up to create productive businesses.
In our centrally planned economy, workers collect unemployment/disability or take government make-work jobs, while investors angle for Fed bailout money.
That's why we're fucked.
