Based on his immense collection quotes I'm thinking Winston Churchill pretty much had the Middle East figured out a 100 years ago and we're just re-learning everything the hard way.
The Middle East is one of the hardest-hearted areas in the world. It has always been fought over, and peace has only reigned when a major power has established firm influence and shown that it will maintain its will. Your friends must be supported with every vigour and if necessary they must be avenged. Force, or perhaps force and bribery, are the only things that will be respected. It is very sad, but we had all better recognize it. At present our friendship is not valued, and our enmity is not feared.

This is the damnedest thing actually.
Opposition to unlimited immigration is the majority opinion in much of Europe, and yet the "right wing" in Europe is indistinguishable on the issue from the left wing. The only group that is taking the public's side on the issue are the national socialists in various countries.

The real problem is that we, as humans, tend to take things to extremes.
There IS a place for Nationalism... but since it was taken to extremes with the Nazis... now we go the other way and throw out with disgust what is a good idea IN MODERATION...
Its like the Environmental movement.... which started as a good idea (pollution and trash were bad) but have been taken to such an extreme that it is partly to blame for ruining our economy.

What correction factor is used for 81% of the people the pollster wishes to interview declining to be interviewed? Is there any reason why a ~9% response rate would consistently oversample Dems?
Well, a lot of us would say something like: “conservatives think it is all BS anyway so more of them don’t do the poll.” Maybe, but it probably projects sentiments onto too many people that really aren’t like folks that follow politics. So, I would say the effect of that exists, but in the overall scheme of things is not numerically large.
So, my next thought – I don’t answer phone calls from people who block their identification, unless I recognize the number. Are lots of people doing that now? If so, who are the 9% who actually take the call? Do they skew older? Do they skew bored as hell? Who is leading a robust, busy life and decides to spend time on the phone with a pollster? I don’t have a clue about the answer to these questions.
Barone also pointed out that pollsters are applying corrections for cell phone only households. Based on what? He implies that the corrections assume the household will skew younger and more liberal. Is that a reasonable assumption? If so, how much should it affect results? Is it true that younger people didnÂ’t learn a damn thing over the past 4 years? Do they know if they are unemployed, or if their wealth is dropping, or if they can pay their loans? Are they all locked into thinking that the only thing that will help them now is Uncle Sugar sending them checks? Or, are they thinking that something else would be better than where they are now? How would a pollster know if they donÂ’t actually talk to them?
Finally, have independents really changed, or will they vote pretty much like they always do? If so, no one wins with less than 50% of the independents. Why would any pollster think this year will be different?
Insty had a link to Zombie where he did a follow up where he asked people why they don't participate. I don't participate cuz I want politicians to say what they think rather than try to figure out the best way to tell me what they think I want to hear.

That's part of it, the appeasement impulse and weird fears. But the other part is the leftists' reflexive insistence that anything that man does in his role as scientist, or businessman, or doctor, must be perfect, or it should not be done at all. Anything natural, anything done by savages, well, stuff happens. But better 10,000 kids die from a disease, than that 10 are injured from something created by man. It's sick, but how're you going to fix it?

There is the distinct possibility that Mitt Romney will win and the pollsters will be very angry and embarrased.
My intuitive sense on the ground is that Romney will win in Ohio. People are angry about his shit, and there is not the childish swell of enthusiasm for Obama today as there was in 2008.
It's just possible that some politicians will actually come to the conclusion that you stated, and actually start trying to explain to people where they stand and stop pandering.
But then again, who am I kidding. At least about the politicians.

The line-in is on arc fault, so the kitchen side receptacles wind up getting both(which is perfectly legal). The whole mess is above and beyond preexisting code minimums, so I'm free to do whatever I want as long as it conforms to location constraints (like AFCI/GFCI).
This pipes down to a quad down by the floor and two switchs in another box. so I'm using line and load on the GFI receptacle, and there's a AFCI/GFCI protected blk/wht going back up the pipe as spares incase I want to drop another kitchen/bathroom/outside receptacle in somewhere later on

Well, Dad's doing okay, but his brother just died, so we are looking at a possible bit of setback. He isn't very happy about having to fly to Seattle again for yet another funeral. I'm thinking that's probably the worst thing about getting old and being in relatively good shape--your best people are getting planted and there you are.
OTOH, his running buddies are mostly younger and keep him pretty active. He was up to two miles a day walking again, not running, but that is huge compared to a month earlier.
I'm back to the Lower 48, missing AK and wishing I was up there shoveling the snow off Dad's driveway. Oh well. Maybe once we really lose the house we can find a dollar or two to move. It sure was nice for the 5 weeks I got to stay this time.

This one is plenty deep enough for the GFCI. Its a 2.25" deep 4-square with a 1/2" mud ring. The mud ring added 5.5cu/in which was just enough additional volume to make the scheme legal. I could have passed on the outbound AFCI/GFCI spares going up to the attic if I needed to, but I didn't when I added the mud ring's volume into the calculation.
Even a deep 4-11/16" box wouldn't have added any extra depth, just a bit of volume, and I didn't have any of those in stock anyway. Part of this exercise is about using up misc materials on hand.
The box isn't going to be packed with wirenut splices. Its looking like two yellows or reds for pigtails, and a greenie.

Racing up and down the side of the tank isn't terribly unusual -- they're probably bored. If you introduce a large, predatory fish, they'll go back to cowering in "safe zones". Also, fish can see what's going on outside of the tank -- so they may be swarming around when they see you because they think you're likely to feed 'em. Mbuna (rock-dwelling cichlids from Lake Malawi) are famous for doing this -- they'll follow your hand from one end of the tank to another and back.

The first had OBAMA (O logo) BIDEN running together on the first line, which made the type in comparison fairly small scale. I couldn't actually read the names until passing in the next lane got me close enough to the bumper. I couldn't read the second line at all - probably the website address.
The second was the 2012 with the O logo standing in for the zero (how appropriate!)
The third was "I'm Proud of My President" (not "our" President, note), directly above and abutting an old Obama '08 sticker. I think the "O" was once again the logo but it was hard to tell.
It was the '08 sticker that made me realize -- none of the new crop I was seeing was designed in such a way that the Obama name was instantly recognizable at a distance, as the 08 variety did.
Mind you, you couldn't mistake them for anything but a O campaign, what with the color and font and logo choices. And everybody knows his name by know, there's no need to spread its familiarization.
But a little googling shows that there are comparable LARGE-TYPE NAME bumper stickers for 2012 available. I just haven't seen any of them on a vehicle.
Doesn't it suggest that these motorists, though eager enough to show their support for TFG, are now leery of blaring the actual name? That they're more comfortable being seen pledging their allegiance to the Brand Logo than the actual person?

None that makes any diff. You can see my attempts to use the unicode sequence, decimal and hex, as well as a hack at escaping the glyph with itself (don't ask) here.
You just have to turn off scripts from minx.cc. That kills the Rich Text Editor.

Here in Washington State, during the 2004 election kerfuffle, the lady that "reconciles" the counts of "paper sheets on hand" versus "people that voted" admitted under oath that the way she reconciled the two was to "Take the paper count, subtract the spoiled ones, and there we are: people that voted!"
She's supposed to be adding up the signatures, etc.
"We'll never have that problem again!" Solution: Eliminate that check entirely Now WA is 100% absentee now. The 'signatures' are exposed and trickle in for weeks before-and-after. We're listed as a 'require ID state' IIRC, but bills count as "ID".

I think that might actually have more to do with the crapfest polling these days than anything. Yes, they're playing with the numbers but it seems likely that they are getting so many more Democrats than Republicans they can't GET better numbers. I've read several pollster interviews that say exactly that: we're doing the best we can with what we get.
If that's the case, there's going to be a lot of really shocked, weeping people on TV news shows come November.

Huge fraud is NOT out of the question. In past elections there have been mid west cities where the total vote count EXCEEDED the number of registered voters. Given that turnout is never even close to 100% except in the smallest of burghs, that sort of thing is prima facie evidence of massive vote fraud.
The media and legal system was singularly incurious about these anomalies, which tells you which side was doing all the fraud.

Ralph Reed says that the polls are simply not picking up on the fact that Evangelical Christians are participating this year in record numbers.
Back when Grumpy McCscrewup was running, a huge number of evangelicals stayed home. Turnout for that group was at an historical low.
Also, Obama is bleeding support from his two biggest, tightest blocks: blacks and Jews. Sure, they still support Obama in the high 80's, but both groups are down from five to seven percent. Probably more among Jews, thanks to the last few weeks.
Among unions, it's mixed. Many UAW Auto Workers are afraid they'll lose their jobs if Obama loses. (Not the folks at Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, and Kia plants). Coal and Steel workers *know* Obama is killing their jobs, so they are voting for Romney.
So look at all the close states from 2008, and think about those percentages Obama has lost since then. Ask yourself what group has he increased voters in, besides possibly illegal aliens and the dead?
Screw the polls.

President Obama's biggest problem with Blacks is turnout. More than a few are going to just blow off voting. Sure, they'll still vote for the "brother" by 95% or more, but a lot, lot fewer will vote this time out. Same with the youth vote.

would I be out of line to assume that someone with your nic has some grasp on stats? OK. the word was that as late as 1996, poll participation was ~37% (? from memory). Now, it has dropped to ~9%.
So, what in heck would anyone do to plot error bars on this rascal? Pollsters are locked into their concept that 800/1000 entries means a margin of error under 4%. Is that gaussian every time? When the mice refuse to play, how could that hold? What could you do to correct? If people won't be interviewed, you sure can't ask them why they won't be interviewed.

I think it was Patterico but someone recently did a great job explaining why the margin of error doesn't work when you put humans into the mix. Its fine with numbers or patterns, but humans are irrational and often random. You have to poll more people to get a reasonable sample, but they figure under 2000 people is enough in a nation of over 300 million.

413 Given the massive tide of workers away from private sector unions, they're pretty much a non issue in elections except for the cash. How they vote isn't very significant any more.
Aye, true enough.
Problem is...the cockaroaches moved into the juicy govt jobs.
Now, we have Govt Unions sucking off of us...and constantly wanting more.
And they can't be fired.
I heard the statistic, that "41% of govt workers are unionized".

That the 43/42 comes from a 9% response rate introduces chaos. The data in these polls is hopelessly corrupt and their conclusions unsupportable.
The 91% who aren't responding are the legendary "silent majority" of the Nixon era.
I think Romney has figured out how that 91% is going to go and he's not worried at all. Obama's reckless moves and obvious desperation says he's figured it out too.

I was actually trying to help you. Somewhere in your education someone must have told you that "communication is what the receiver assigns." Like it or not, you insult people and they insult you back. It does not matter whether you intend to or not.
Suggestion: you can either lighten up and make it funny, toughen up and stop being offended by any of it, or gain a little empathy and see accurately the actual message people (not me, cuz I just don't care) around here receive from you. A combination of the 3 would probably be your best bet.
Tell you what, I won't join in picking on you anymore. I'm sorry that I did. But, I won't be defending you unless you start to catch on a little.
Is U.S. english your first language? Maybe you just don't get some of the nuance. You don't have to kiss any asses, but it sure seems to me like you want to be respected while being disrespectful. My guess is that will never work out for you -- here or anywhere else.

My parents had an Unabridged, Illustrated, Websters Dictionary...when I was growing up.
It was about 6 inches thick, and had it's own stand.
I was a weird kid....and used to sit and read it like a book.
The times I've used that 'merriam-webster dot com' site...I've been disappointed in some of their definitions.
It's like leftists have tried to re-define a lot of things.
Slant them.
Bad thing is...a lot of people don't know the difference, if they're using that as their sole source.

There are an infinite number of "logic systems" that can be defined (from a mathematical POV). Its a mistake to presume that what is a sound conclusion in one translates to a sound conclusion in another in the absence of a meta-system above them all that could be used to draw conclusions that were valid in all lower systems.
A logic system is just a set of rules used. The rules for any system can be relatively arbitrary and still produce a system that's capable of making conclusions that are valid within that system.
A religious person would generally take perfectly logical actions within the rules of the logic system they're operating in.
Your problem is that you can't accept that multiple logic systems can exist.
I wish I could remember the name of one of my theoretical computing profs at UCSD he was a real expert on this kind of logic system stuff and wrote a decent book about it we used in class. Patrick Connor maybe? He was an Irishman. I know his first name was Patrick.

Yeah.
It's also the office that is in charge of Launce Codes.
But...not to worry.
Our intrepid Obots in charge, also said:
"“In this instance the attack was identified, the system was isolated, and there is no indication whatsoever that any exfiltration of data took place,” the official said.
The official said there was no impact or attempted breach of a classified system within the office."

why do I have trouble believing that statement?

The Chinese don't see Obama as an honest agent in getting the world's collective economic mess sorted out and would rather him gone than have that advantage (which is essentially useless to them)
Its a message to the American voter.

(which is essentially useless to them) --- too big of an assumption for me.
Its a message to the American voter. --- not a crystal clear message by any means. The obummer voter is a rather special breed. But, could be I guess.

I like this.
So I hope you're right about that, PurpAv.
Let's hope they've already changed the Launch Codes.
I could care less about them knowing about Barky's travel schedule.

654 DAve,
Then have at it. Engage him in some discourse. Be sure and apply duct tape to your head first; you're gonna need it eventually.

Africa for the Africans, Greece also for the Africans? That makes no sense if you like Greeks and want them to have a future.

The "racist!" accusation is used to shut people up, and effectively deny political representation to White people who are rightly afraid of genocidal levels of mass immigration.
