Speaking of meds, when I was in med school an undergraduate who lived in our apartment building rushed into my apartment and dumped a handful (50 or so) pills on the counter.  She wanted to borrow my PDR  (Physician's Desk Reference) to use the picture section to identify the "good stuff" she had scored from somebody.  Not a one of the pill ID numbers matched up with anything in the PDR. She probably spent a bunch of money on a handful of knock-off sugar pills.  She was pretty loopy, so I bet she took every one of them, hoping to get high. Weird!

Hey.

Fox will be replaying that Brett Baer Special...in 30 minutes.

It's like he stole Glenn Beck's notes, or something.

He lays out things....about the 'Green Agenda'....things I never thought I would see Fox allow to be brought up.

It outlined how Barky and the Prog's 'Green Agenda' is a cloaking device for all sorts of things that have nothing to do with the environment.

'Eco-feminism'

'Social Justice'

'Reparations'

The list is long.

Definitely worth watching, if you're still awake enough.

I could see them try to "harmonize" by restricting "First Sale" doctrine to domestic goods. There is an exception for bringing in foreign goods for personal use, but will the courts argue that if you resell it, the item is not for personal use, and thus excluded from the First Sale doctrine? Frankly, that law restricting import should be abolished. If it is legal to import, and you legally bought that stuff, you should be able to resell it, period. Oh well...

Cake is to pills as

Homework is to Sweet Peas!

Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at October 07, 2012 07:47 PM (/LkSO)

149 Why these pictures aren't random at all; they are a beautiful haiku meditation on the bittersweetness of life itself.

The cake represents the first rush of sweetness, pure and full of the sugar of promise.

The drugs represent the lifelong promise of relief from pain in life, the pleasure of which is mixed with high cost and unintended effects.

The boy represents the first promise of youth, the sweetness of which is marred early by the disappointments of the drudgery of daily living.

The oxymoron "sweet" peas represent the unmitigated lie that is our adult lives: the promise that doing what is good for us will result in happiness in this life (when in fact that gratification is generally delayed till the next) which is always marred by imperfections, and the generic can starkly underscores the point that no matter our hopes and dreams, there are always peas to eat in the end.

The dog represents God, the only fulfillment of our hopes and dreams of unconditional love which is guaranteed to us, both in this life and the next.

219 I just got my sample ballot (I'm in CA), and haven't yet gotten the info for propositions, and I'm already seeing a clear theme.

The county wants a 1/8 cent increase in the sales tax, because -- get this -- the Feds and State have squandered all the money you sent to them and you should vote to pay some at the County level to ensure vital services aren't curtailed.

The local water district wants a parcel tax to maintain what they knew they needed to maintain for a hundred years while they squandered the money on (among other things) a freakin' PALACE of an administration building.

The state wants a tax on EVIL millionaires to make up for the loss of tax revenues they've felt since so many millionaires decamped to Texas while the state squandered all the tax money from millionaires on idiotic pension plan schemes for state workers.

The Swiss have stayed out of the EU – one more thing the very prosperous Swiss are gloating about these days – and they certainly don’t want EU problems spilling over into their peaceful little country. That the Swiss military is adding four new military police battalions to the army, to be spread around the country, indicates that the threat they have in mind is more disorder and chaos than actual invasion.” Winter is coming.

These are the stated goals of the bill, why it was passed and what it hoped to accomplish with the CPB (NPR, PBS, etc): -Encourage the growth and development of public radio and television -Encourage diversity of programming on both local and national levels -Encourage public telecommunications services which will be responsive to the interests of people both in particular localities and throughout the United States -Address the needs of unserved and underserved audiences, particularly children and minorities -Address national concerns and solve local problems through community programs and outreach programs -Ensure that all citizens of the United States have access to public telecommunications services through all appropriate available telecommunications distribution technologies -Ensure maximum protection for telecommunications from extraneous interference and control -To avoid bias or political slant by creating a board which represents multiple viewpoints Now, aside from that last one, which is patently a failure, every single one of these goals has been met or surpassed. The CPB has outlived its usefulness, even if we weren't sixteen trillion in debt and counting. Sorry Big Bird, you're going to have to set out on your own with the hundreds of millions of dollars you have earned over the years.

Have not considered that. It's brilliant.

They tried it with the Articles of Confederation, but found that they states were quick to refuse to pay.  Nowadays, that's less an issue, since any plan would include a provision that says "You don't pay, none of your state documents are recognized elsewhere."  That means if California doesn't pay it's share of the national budget, then all those California license plates become invalid.  All those California DLs lose their official status.  Same with birth certificates, concealed carry permits, court judgements, etc.

364 @340 uh, let's not forget that this is an ont where MODERATORS jump on the bully bandwagon and abuse their power to selectively censor the long posts of those who are unpopular -- long-time members with clearly conservative views (i.e., not "trolls" by the usual definition) who may feel differently about a couple of nonessential issues -- and *only* those who are unpopular, while self-righteously hiding behind a smokescreen of excuses about "following rules" that are apparently not applied to any other commentor. picking on folks who hold minority viewpoints and abusing positions of power to selectively target them for abuse is *precisely* the kind of double-standard-ridden hypocrisy that the members of the ont crew (rightly) vociferously decry when it's applied to their viewpoints by media or other authority figured. ace is no cj by a *long* shot, but when you consider moderators ganging up with a crew of regulars to attack someone who isn't popular, you might see how the lgf comparison is mildly appropriate.

This place is very fair to people with views that deviate from the mean (I should know), but it is equally quick to deliver a bitch slap to those who mewl about being mistreated. You are not being mistreated, you are being tested. Can you figure out how to be heard and play by the written and unwritten rules?

Govt fucking import taxes on foreign produced commercial vehicles.  This is the same reason VW never tried to sell their outstanding line of diesel light commercial vehicles here.

The old pickup truck form factor for the VW hippie van was awesome - flat bed, flip down sides, rack/stake bed, it was infinitely configurable and tool boxes under the bed, where you could actually reach them, were standard.

Not sold here.  Had to go to Canada or Mexico to find one.

Govt intervention SUCKS.  It forces inferior products on people

What's the catch? Well, he paid legal tender for it, got a receipt, and his registration is based on it.....but it was $1500 in pre-1964 quarters. Solid silver, worth $6 and change each....which puts his car at over $36,000 in value. The guy met the dealer and the coin dealer at the lot and the deal was done.

Only problem I see is if he totals it in an accident.

491 I will tell the body design crew next time I meet them for lunch about your pickup bed issue. And that is serious.

Its not just body design, its that their whole mechanical paradigm is 100 years old.

Weight distribution is poor (ass end too light) resulting in substandard winter road handling and severe understeer.

Seriously, VW's commercial vehicles of 1968 (1st year of the CV/IRS suspension rather than swing axle) vintage had superior usability and handling characteristics.

My old 58' VW hippie van was a freaking mountain goat in bad weather.  Plows and police cars would be wallowing around and I'd blow right by them fearlessly into the unplowed shit...sporting a whopping 40hp engine.

495 And the side by side seating layout -- completely retarded for an actual commercial/trade vehicle.

If you go back to back seating w/half width "cab" and extend the bed through what would have been the "passenger side", NOW you can tote 40' extension ladders, 20' lengths of pipe, and long lumber without having that shit strapped to the roof or sticking up in grotesque ways, fucking your aerodynamics, and raising the C/G of the vehicle and promoting rollovers.

508 Jerry - here's the point that's been fucking pickup truck design in the USA for 100 years.

The presumption that engine forward with driveshaft to rear axle is the way to do it.  When you accept that as gospel, there's a whole "cascade of suck" that follows of necessity.

Light commercial/trade vehicles should allow the needs of the CARGO to determine the form of the mechanicals, not the other way around.

People buy a commercial/trade vehicle because they need to move shit, not because they want to buy some powerplant form factor with half assed cargo toting tacked on as an afterthought.

You're selling the ability to move shit effectively.  THAT is the product.  All the steel and plastic is just incidental.

Posted by: jimi ray at October 08, 2012 02:26 AM (79EF9) Yeah ... the poor Indians had a right to continue with human sacrifice, cutting beating hearts out of living beings, and general bloodlust festivities. Everyone knows that the sun-god needs human blood. The best part about Apocalypto is how it put the arrival of the Europeans, at the end, into a proper context. Most Indians died from disease - most of the ones who weren't killing each other, anyway. The Europeans had just had a huge die-off from the Black Plague not 150 years earlier, themselves. And the Indians sent back syphillis. I call that even on that account. the other funny thing is how tobacco is the worst evil to ever touch the Earth but the fact that it came from the Indians never seems to be discussed among the lefterati retards. They can blame Europeans for the arab slave trade (which went on long before and long after the Europeans) and can demonize Columbus and every company associated with tobacco .... but the Indians are never mentioned. It's a poser.

536 Short version, conservatives don't care enough about what our ancestors did 20 generations ago to screw someone over, because everyone was doing it at the time to everyone else that they could.  It's like the reparations argument, if you take it to reducto ad absurdum, and you'd have too without an arbitrary cutoff, everyone's got a claim against some government or heir.  Reparations always drives me nuts because every one of my ancestors came over on the boats after the Civil War, so I fail to see why my money or taxes should go to pay descendents of former slaves when I bear no direct responsibility, even if you applied blood libel rules.  Also, the whole "get over it already" thing.

The Incas weren't stupid or isolated, They couldn't have kidnapped a few Spaniards and plied them with wine, women, and cocaine until they knew all about iron and gunpowder. Why didnt the more organized North American tribes get some French fur trapper to draft up land ownership papers, and while they were at it use those "letters" to write stuff down.

542 The NA tribes were kinda isolated in that the south west desert was a natural barrier to significant interaction with the south/central American crew.

They didn't seem to have any interest in exploiting water as a major mode of transport.  I don't believe they even developed any primitive sails...which would have been a distinct advantage for coastal raiding parties.

545 Posted by: Jean at October 08, 2012 03:37 AM (74T7W) It's a cultural thing. There are cultures that hold people back and, unless they break away from them, they cannot move far forward. The arabs have had writing for a very long time but they STILL have no respect for written contracts. It's just not part of their primitive culture and will not become part. They just have no respect for the concept of individual private property and never will. They are tribalistic which means that all things are secondary or tertiary to the interests of their tribe and their warped conception of "honor". Contracts that bind their tribe will just not be enforced if they think they are shamed by it - which with arabs is constant since they are such monumental fuck-ups and hyper-sensitive dipshits who blame everything on everyone but their own pathetic selves.

"unprecedented in thousands of years of history". One anecdote that stood out was one of athletes growing their own food, because they might fail drug tests if they ate food from the market. Thought ye Morons might find that sort of hearsay interesting, considering recent news regarding China.

550 "unprecedented in thousands of years of history".

Not really.  Same thing happened here in the US as the transition from rural/ag to urban started in the early 1900's and factory processed foods started appearing.

Sketchy food quality seems to be quite common phenomenon during transition periods as factory processing is ramping, but widespread quality standards aren't implemented yet.

My gut says the Chinese are about where we were in the 1920's regarding quality standards enforcement.

I don't think Purp was claiming that it was the zenith of engineering--rather an example of how quality and intelligent engineering has been sacrificed in modern vehicles.

568 When we're pretending anemic shitburger air-cooled '58 VW vans were the apex of human achievement, I'm not sure whose dick is being jerked anymore.

It outperformed "modern" vehicles in winter situations, and did so with less power and only 2-wheel drive.  I claim no more than that.

The reason is obvious - its fore/aft C/G was better suited to snow than the modern vehicles.

It's 6V system sucked, the headlights were dim, and its interior was as spartan as I've ever seen, and its link pin front suspension was high maintenance.

If a modern vehicle can't exceed a 40 year old one in all aspects, then something is very wrong.  We're devolving.

You don't need work animals to utilize the idea of "wheel", in fact it doesn't even need to be employed in a transport manner.

"Wheel" is a pretty generic notion that encompasses anything that rotates and follows a path - from rollers on sliding doors, to Space Shuttle launch pad crawlers.

Its about as varied as the idea of "fastener", which could be anything from mud to high tech polymerizing glues, or folded over tabs.

Screws had been used as specialty parts (to hold things together) long before you mentioned and were also made from different materials before the cheap metal screws came into widespread use. Making a wheel, on the other hand, is a different deal. And there are no cheaper alternatives to the wheel.

Not having the tax is a subsidy to gays on 90% of their income. We shouldn't subsidize being gay at a cost of 100's of billions a year by not taxing it. Nothing wrong with being gay, and we wish everyone could be gay. I just don't think we should be paying for it by giving away all that money every year. How selfish of the gays! Poor people exist, and they're hoarding all that money for themselves. If after 10 years poor people still exist somewhere, we'll need to bump up the gay tax to 97% or so.

Romney's never advanced the CinC rescinding suicidal (Bush/Karzai) military rules of engagement, either. Supposedly, they were designed to "nation build". But even since Kristol and other neoconservatives have admitted the horrible failure of US compassionate-conservative "nation building" efforts transposing "democratic" jihad fundamentalist mob rule over strongman stability, the US military rules of engagement not only stay in place via Obama, but Republicans in office don't ask for or advance a repeal of failed policy. Meanwhile, aside from the skyrocketing US suicides, the Muslim sabotage of US training military personnel is the new combat zone, inside US military installations. Recall Ft. Hood and Major Hasan, still not prosecuted. Neither military intelligence nor DHS protected US citizens in Killeen at Ft. Hood. It isn't "over there so it won't happen here" as promised. No, we don't need more authoritarian powers augmenting the over-reach of the Patriot Act.

663 Henry KISSINGER. Former secretary of state. Current savant of the state of the world. Do not argue with Mr. KissingerÂ’s know-how. He already knows how.

Middle East horror. Democratic party dissing Jerusalem. DCÂ’s anti-Israel mentality. Obama, busy raising re-election funds, no time for beleaguered Netanyahu. The Oval Office attitude versus the Red Line. IranÂ’s oath to destroy our only friend in that part of the world.

Reported to me, Henry Kissinger has stated — and I quote the statement word for word: “In 10 years, there will be no more Israel.”

I repeat: “In 10 years, there will be no more Israel.”
