Paul Ryan Editorial In The Onion
— Ace

Not really, of course.

It's interesting to get a peek inside the other side's mindthoughts.

Admit It, I Scare The Ever-Loving Shit Out Of You, Don't I?

By Paul Ryan
Candidate for Vice President of the United States
August 13, 2012 | ISSUE 48•33

When Mitt Romney selected me as his running mate, I knew the Democratic attack dogs would come out in full force.... But if we’re being honest with each other—if we’re able to put aside the talking points for a few minutes and say what we’re all actually thinking and feeling—I believe we can acknowledge the real truth here.

IÂ’m young, IÂ’m handsome, IÂ’m smart, and IÂ’m articulate. And that scares the ever-loving shit out of you. You can pretend like you have this thing in the bag, but you know good goddamn well that this race just got real interesting, real fast.

ItÂ’s okay to admit it. YouÂ’re frightened to death of me. It might actually be healthy for you to face your fears now rather than later, when Mitt and I are leading by a few points in the polls and it looks like this thing might end badly for you. Face it: IÂ’m not some catastrophe waiting to happen, like a Sarah Palin or a Dan Quayle. On the contrary, you have the exact opposite fear. IÂ’m a solid, competent, some might say exceptional, politician.

Did you get nervous when you read that last sentence? Is it because you know in your heart of hearts that it’s 100 percent true? Is it because, even if you strongly disagree with my beliefs on Medicare, Social Security, women’s rights, and marriage equality, you know my talent as a speaker and my well-thought-out approach to these issues—no matter how radical and convoluted you find them—might just be enough to win over independent voters?

Do you get chills just thinking about how strong my appeal actually is?

How Scary is Ryan? Scary enough that Kirsten Powers is throwing up embarrassment all over herself.

Here's the thing: They actually have to sell their product.  The legacy media takes pride in low ratings.  The WaPo and LAT are living off Ford Foundation grants. (WaPo is also living off of its revenues from Kaplan, which I'll bet you didn't know.)

Most newspaper companies lose money hand over fist and the networks have abysmal ratings.

They not only don't respond to market forces, they fight against them.

A perfect summation of leftist thought.  For the left, the deficit matters not one whit.  What matters is their cultural triumph.  I got dragged into a "conversation" with a lefty at a party the other night who was yelling about Ryan and how Romney had lost the election with his "extremist" pick.  She said that the Neanderthals in the Midwest and South would be the only ones who would vote for them.  "Have you ever actually met any?" All cultural hatred.  Nothing about how we are racing toward the financial cliff.  That part just doesn't exist for them.

55 Kirsten's point wasn't as bad as it sounds; she just couldn't articulate it.

Ryan-Wyden is a Medicare plan, by definition it will effect only people who are eligible, which per law are people 65 and older. Their plan's [much needed] alterations aren't phased in until 10 years hence, thus those currently 55 and older can, per the plan, NOT see any variation from the current system.

So, if she was trying to say it is about old people who just aren't old yet... and how these people plan for their inevitable post-age 65 life, then it is a major fucking concern and Ryan can make tremendous inroads into the Gen-Xers who basically realize we're fucked if we stay on our current Kenyan trajectory.

61 I think the liberals were really hoping to do to Ryan's Medicare plan the same thing they did to Bush's attempt at reforming Social Security.  They really pushed hard to hide that fact that there was no plan to make changes to Social Security for thos already on it.  And they're really freaking out because Republicans are able to bring up Obama taking away $700 billion away from it.

101 But there is a FB poster saying Ryan wants to ban popular form of BC --I seriously doubt that one has any basis in truth, but perhaps he once voiced approval for a stupid "personhood" amendment.    Oh and voting against the Lily Ledbetter act is anti-woman.   Of course wimmens should have decades to decide that an employer discriminated against them and every employer should have to fear a lawsuit until any jerk off employee they ever fired drops dead.

Anyone ever ask them why the Government won't refund their families that money if they die in their 50s before collecting any benefits?  If it's their money that they are entitled to, and Democrats are so concerned that they get it, why don't they cut a check to the widow or widower if a spouse dies before collecting?

But no. They just keep it, don't they?  Hmmmm

113 #97 - Barb - I don't know if this thread is still live, but if so, I did some searches, and I'm not finding any culture that would  use this particular set of elements magically (my first thought, sorry), unless there was a more representational figure associated as well; the political symbolism is actually a lot more common, but it's not particularly well-represented among northern Europeans. It's more likely to show up in various South American and Caribbean sub-cultures as a political statement.

What I'm not picking up is if there's a solid American tradition of political protest I can see this tying to.

Posted by: mama winger in Paul Ryan's district at August 13, 2012 09:10 PM (P6QsQ) The very first thing everyone needs to be clear on: the politicians stole it. It's gone, there's no fund, there's no mountain of money, it's all gone and then some (to the tune of a trillion a year at this sad point). From there, we need to keep repeating that we're not talking about "preserving" anything, we're talking about how to fix the system so we can stop going broke and start paying back on what was stolen. Because if anyone thinks there's something to "preserve," (and you know they're out there), that plays to the liars claiming to protect them, mostly the same ones who stole the money.

Exactly.  The Dems aren't concerned about making sure recipients get their benefits.  What they are concerned about is the possibility that all that sweet money might stop flowing their way if the automatic Medicare payroll deductions are decreased.

I was going to ask about this; I saw this announcement and yes, Mitchell was absolutely terrible.

But she somehow brought up Sarah Palin and there was a lot of noise in my living room at the time, but I thought I heard her say something like "Palin, that hick" and then looked embarrassed like she had just blurted out a huge faux pas. But I don't know for sure. I didn't see anything about it on Newsbusters, which would pick up something like that. That's why I would like to see it again.

anyone doubting the GOP on Medicare or Soc Sec....

"Why did Barack Obama steal 700 billion of Medicare withholdings to add to the debt and make seniors care less stable"

if they start in on "I am owed mine"

the instant reply is,

"We know you were lied to, and we intend to make sure the people trapped in the bad system are protected, but you cannot trust ANY politician with that much money or power of your healthcare if they can steal that much from us and mislay it.  Let's protect you and let younger people start wortking for a better system for us all and future generations."

134 Sorry but I lived through "support of 'personhood' amendment with life begins at conception means that support of 'personhood' equals against BC pills because some pills *might* cause shedding of a fertilized egg."     That little thing probably caused Ken Buck to lose to a poor politician in 2010.    The race was quite close.    So yes I do think "personhood" amendment petitions are damn stupid and not the way to advance a pro-life agenda.  They play right into the liberal stereotype that neocons just want to keep all wimmens barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

135 lol - I'm on the email list for ProgressNow Nevada and the email they sent is hysterical - as in they are freaking out!

"We've just gotten word that Mitt Romney's VP pick Paul Ryan is holding a public event in Las Vegas on Tuesday, August 14 at Palo Verde High School.

This is one of the first public events for Paul Ryan since being picked as the VP candidate and his first in Nevada.

Come show Nevadans and the rest of the country that the Romney/Ryan plan to destroy Medicare and cut taxes for the richest 1% will not fly in Nevada!

Here are the protest details:

WHEN: 3:30pm

WHERE: The sidewalk outside Palo Verde High School (333 South Pavilion Center Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89144)

It will be HOT so we will be providing water at the protest site. Hats and suncreen are always good ideas to help beat the heat too!

Here's a link to a Facebook event for easy sharing with friends:

http://www.facebook.com/events/484486274895172

And if you're wondering who this Paul Ryan guy is and why he's such a potential disaster for America, here are the top five things you need to know about Paul Ryan (via ThinkProgress):

1. Ryan embraces the extreme philosophy of Ayn Rand. Ryan heaped praise on Ayn Rand, a 20th-century libertarian novelist best known for her philosophy that centered on the idea that selfishness is “virtue.” Rand described altruism as “evil,” condemned Christianity for advocating compassion for the poor, viewed the feminist movement as “phony,” and called Arabs “almost totally primitive savages. “The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand,” Ryan said at a D.C. gathering honoring the author of “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead.” “I give out ‘Atlas Shrugged’ as Christmas presents, and I make all my interns read it. Well… I try to make my interns read it.”

2. Ryan wants to raises taxes on the middle class, cut them for millionaires. Paul Ryan’s infamous budget — which Romney embraced — replaces “the current tax structure with two brackets — 25 percent and 10 percent — and cut the top rate from 35 percent.” Households “earning more than $1 million a year, meanwhile, could see a net tax cut of about $300,000 annually.”

3. Ryan wants to end Medicare, replace it with a voucher system. A recent study found that had the Ryan Budget been implemented in 2009, 24 million beneficiaries enrolled in the program would have paid higher premiums to maintain their choice of plan and doctors. Ryan would also raise MedicareÂ’s age of eligibility to 67.

4. Ryan thinks Social Security is a “ponzi scheme." Also, since 2005 Ryan has advocated for privatizing the retirement benefit and investing it in stocks and bonds.

5. Ryan’s budget would result in 4.1 million lost jobs in 2 years. Ryan’s budget calls for massive irresponsible reductions in government spending, which the Economic Policy Institute estimates would suck demand out of the economy and “reduce employment by 1.3 million jobs in fiscal 2013 and 2.8 million jobs in fiscal 2014, relative to current budget policies.”

Join us Tuesday to protest Paul Ryan's first visit to Nevada!
