Peggy Noonan: Anyone Notice How Boring and Unappealing This President Is?
— Ace

Uh, yeah-uh!

Worth reading in full. An optimistic take.

Republicans feel an understandable anxiety about Mr. Obama's coming campaign: It will be all slice and dice, divide and conquer, break the country into little pieces and pick up as many as you can. He'll try to pick up college students one day and solidify environmentalist support the next, he'll valorize this group and demonize the other. He means to gather in and hold onto all the pieces he needs, and turn them into a jagged, jangly coalition that will win it for him in November and not begin making individual demands until December.

But it still matters that the president doesn't have a coherent agenda, or a political philosophy that is really clear to people. To the extent he has a philosophy, it tends to pop up furtively in stray...

But—and forgive me, because what I'm about to say is rude—has anyone noticed how boring he is? Plonking platitude after plonking platitude. To see Mr. Obama on the stump is to see a man at the podium who's constantly dribbling away the punch line. He looks pleasant but lacks joy; he's cool but lacks vigor. A lot of what he says could have been said by a president 12 or 20 years ago, little is anchored to the moment. As he makes his points he often seems distracted, as if he's holding a private conversation in his head, noticing crowd size, for instance, and wishing the front row would start fainting again, like they used to.

...

He's raised a lot of money, or so we keep reading. He has a sophisticated, wired, brilliant computer operation—they know how to mine Internet data and get the addresses of people who've never been reached by a campaign before, and how to approach them in a friendly and personal way. This is thought to be a secret weapon. I'm not so sure. All they can approach their new friends with is arguments that have already been made, the same attacks and assertions. If you have fabulous new ways to reach everyone in the world but you have little to say, does that really help you?

...

This is the problem of the world now: Big mic, no message. If you have nothing to say, does it matter that you have endless venues in which to say it?

...

There is a growing air of incompetence around Mr. Obama's White House. It was seen again this week in Supreme Court arguments over the administration's challenge to Arizona's attempted crackdown on illegal immigration. As Greg Stohr of Bloomberg News wrote, the court seemed to be disagreeing with the administration's understanding of federal power: "Solicitor General Donald Verrilli . . . met resistance across ideological lines. . . . Even Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the court's only Hispanic and an Obama appointee, told Verrilli his argument is 'not selling very well.'" This follows last month's embarrassing showing over the constitutionality of parts of ObamaCare.

All of this looks so bush league, so scattered. Add it to the General Services Administration, to Solyndra, to the other scandals, and you get a growing sense that no one's in charge, that the administration is paying attention to politics but not day-to-day governance.

She ends by asking a series of "Are you better off"" type questions.

I really think it's as simple as she says. Ultimately this election is about the question: "Do you want to try something else, or do you think the last four years are the very best we can do?"

If you've Defined Expectations so low as to give Obama high marks, well, I guess you're unteachable.

But I don't think most people have decided Obama is the Very Best We Can Do.

I think they've decided the last four years are the best Obama can do, but not the best America can do.

12 Well after her general wobbliness in the last few years and her endorsement of Obama in 2008 I downgraded Peggy's columns to the FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY category and don't take anything she says seriously.

Perhaps in 5 or 10 years I might revisit that judgment - if she hasn't been an idiot in the meantime.

Why, New York is a city of the utmost sophistication and we rubes in “flyover country,” as the urbane coastal denizens call us, could never understand the trenchant badinage of such worthies. We should just stand back and gaze upon their work with slack jawed admiration and not concern our silly little heads with intangibles that we can’t really appreciate.

Glad that there's finally at least one person in the MFM pointing out that the entire democrat party hinges on breaking people up into little victim groups and convincing them they need democrats and government to protect and provide for them, it's all they have, without that faux victimhood they're nothing.

I'm done with berating Noonan for her silly crush on the dogeater because if she has given up on Barky, she's effectively telling other Obama voters that it's OK to change your mind about him. That will win over a lot more voters than people like us calling them dipshits and saying "We had his number all along." Rubbing people's noses in past mistakes is not the way to win them over.

However, he has a secret about the way that he votes that only his close friends know. He publicly talks like a Democratic Party loyal. But he actually votes Republican. A lot. 100 I don't care one hoot about Peggy Noonan.  I do like the fact that columns like this give other columnists cover to start trickling out little unpleasantries about Obama.  Like, he's boring.  He's got no vision.  He's divisive.  He's distant.  He's unappealing.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Peggy has made it okay to talk about disillusionment with a certain set of people.  People who write newspapers.  People in the M f'n M.  This is a good thing.  Has nothing to do with Peggy No One herself.

Posted by: mama winger at April 27, 2012 03:36 PM (P6QsQ)

101 Nooner leans right, but at her core, she is a feeler/emoter.

She just couldn't help herself in getting caught up in Owaffle mania in 08, because it appealing to her emotional pleasue centers.  Now that Owaffle looks like a loser, particularly to even center right beltway folks, Noonan, like most women in her position are forced to try and figure out why those special feelings are gone.

She's fallen out of love and is now lashing out, angry that OWaffle could prove her initial feeeeelings to be so misguided. Boring is code for unsexy.

Rational folks sans tingle, figured this out 4 years ago.

... But Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan suggested that the president’s “incorrect or ill-thought-through” remarks were tarnishing his professorial reputation.

“Can I tell you something that I think is hurting the president’s reputation right now?” Noonan said.

“He has this reputation — he has for four years now that he has been famous in America as a really smart man. But he has said things lately that are so incorrect or ill-thought-through that people think, ‘He’s really smart. He must be being mischievous. He must be being deliberately provocative.’”

When I lived in DC in the '80's, I worked with and befriended a guy who was a staunch conservative who loved Reagan.  I was a lib in those days and we had some very heated debates, but I seriously began to rethink my views, in part because I had lived in a liberal bubble and had never had my assumptions intelligently challenged before.

Forward to 2010:  I called this same man, one-time owner of the collected works of P.J. 177 Funny statistic.  If something good happens to you, you tell 12 people.  If something bad happens to you, you tell 63 people.

So, here is my story.  My next door neighbor is old.  I made a deal with him that I would mow his lawn if he would lend me his riding mower.  I prefer my self-propelled mower because it has a mulching blade.  So I only use his mower on my yard in the really nasty heat.

The battery in his mower failed.  I looked on the intertubes for a replacement.  I saw prices around $43.  I went to the local AutoZone.  They wanted $83.  I said "No thanks."  I called BatteriesPlus.  $39.99 + tax.

I will NEVER darken the doorway of Autozone again.

178 Dear Peggy,

From the beginning, any one paying attention realized that el Jefe was a SCFOAMF.  My personal favorites include Chewy aka Michelle claiming that el Jefe's feet stank and screeching that "Barack can't run for president, he ain't done nothing yet." (That's the smartest thing Chewy ever said!!)  There was also the Wright tapes that shouted "Warning, Warning-- Danger, Will Robinson!" to anyone who wasn't stupid.

So, I propose the Bama Rule -- any one who actually BELIEVED el Jefe's BS is banned from the public square. I really don't want to hear from Peggy and her ilk anymore.  GO AWAY Peggy and take Bama with you!!

Thats about how many I spent there. From ages 13-24. I was the brokest ass mofo in the state the entire time, never once blamed anyone else or expected anything, but got tired of the high cost of living, coupled with the state fees on everything, and the traffic. You could not drive across town without almost being hit by someone, or being car number 10  in line at every stop sign. The only thing I noticed after leaving was if you needed to get over a lane on the freeway people would let you. Here in OH they speed up (pissed off) like you are trying to take something from them.

As for Noonan, it is nice to get validation about what we all know and have known for years.  Despite the fact that she purchased her Limited Edition Knee Pads, #277/1000, in the Obama Worship Gift Shop.  But.....but.....I do have to believe that she would not be voicing such criticisms (still wants to be part of the in crowd) if she was alone in her thoughts.  Something tells me that the inner circles are starting to open their eyes to the bubblefuckery that is the dogeater-in-chief.

Most doctors are appalled by performing abortions, especially when you consider that most doctors become OB-Gyn's to deliver babies. But they are usually quiet about it as a part of their professionalism.

And most nurses I have ever met are even more openly appalled by abortions, they are more outspoken in opposing them.

Most everyone that I know in medicine don't like abortions.  Most abortions are performed by a relatively small and motivated minority of doctors.

They are really reaching the bottom of the barrel if they want to certify nurse practictioners to perform abortions. And I'll bet that most nurse practitioners don't want to perform them either.

364 Since this thread refuses to die, I feel compelled to say that I feel a little bad for getting a little vulgar with my putdown of the Peggy upthread but I really do have to say that I feel she really let us down with her support of Obama for all these years. I accept the fact that there are low information voters who, if they had an ounce of patriotism in them would stay the f**k at home on election day and not inflict their stupidity on us, but Peggy? What was her excuse? A former Reagan speechwriter? Are you kidding me? How did she miss all the information out there, that while embargoed by the MFM and consequently from the LIV's but how did she miss it? Unless it was willful obtuseness and a repudiation of any principles she may have had. While I'm glad she's coming around, I have no respect for her. And will not in the future. There are mistakes AND THEN THERE ARE MISTAKES. Endorsing a closet Marxist - when you are an ostensible leader in Republican circles - is the latter.

368 I guess I was "not present" during that vote. Posted by: Soap MacTavish at April 27, 2012 09:37 PM (vbh31) It wasn't so much a vote as a really long comments thread where multiple people expressed they were charmed by the idiosyncrasies of the blog, and that, while some changes would be good, it would be too easy to really fuck things up, so best just leave well enough alone. How representative those commenters are of general readership, I have no idea.

WaPo urges Odogma to stop $8Billion to bonus pay to insurance comps earning 3 or more stars

Medicare’s $8 billion advantageThe theory behind the change, according to administration officials, was to provide incentives to more plans to quickly improve their quality. It also had the political benefit of shielding services to seniors from being cut in an election year. But as both the GAO and the Medicare Payment Advisory Board have noted, the design and the national scope of the project make it impossible to measure whether it achieves better results than would have been obtained otherwise — that is, without spending $8 billion. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius should follow the GAO’s advice and cancel the bonus plan.

382 How did she miss all the information out there, that while embargoed by the MFM and consequently from the LIV's but how did she miss it?

Nothing was really embargoed.  The MSM couldn't stop most of the stuff from being discussed (which is why I hold Barky voters totally responsible for their America-hating votes) but they just squelched the discussion as soon as possible or provided an offensive diversion.  But all the info on Barky was out for everyone to see.  Nothing was hidden from anyone (except for actual documents and stuff, but we had to fight Noonan and the rest of the Vichy Right who thought we were too embarrassing in asking for what was merely required).

No, everyone knew.  Pggy knew.  Everyone saw Barky hold the biggest campaign rally of his anti-American campaign in a friggin foreign nation ... for friggin FOREIGNERS!!  This is illegal and about the most repulsive political act one could commit in our system.  This was not a secret.  Barky should have been tossed from the American race right then and there.  No one had any excuse for any support of the Indonesian Dog-Eating America-hater after that, if not doing the right thing and calling for Barky to be served charges and/or impeached for it.  It was the most serious political criminality in American history.  The most offensive, too.

And Nooner is still missing most of the stuff.  That article isn't even close to anything.  She's still two years behind (which puts her close on Krauthammer's heels, as he usually runs about a year and a half behind the obvious).

Nooner is scum.

388 Yes, the SCOAMT's Medicare bonus giveaway is illogical, just like SCOAMTcare. My mom is in the hospital right now, and please heed my warning: Do not, and do not let anyone else, trade their Medicare for some HMO with a low premium and limited network. She is more than going to pay the difference (I will) with the copays, and so few docs and hospitals and rehab centers accept it that it's been awful. Poor care. Much better to keep the Medicare and buy a supp.

Posted by: elizabethe at April 27, 2012 06:09 PM (Kc4zJ)

394 Elizabethe, there is more than one tradition.  In one, Mary died and then Jesus appeared later to call her body from the grave (100 years later).  Witnesses.

The CCC says: "Mary, when in the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the resurrection of her Son." paragraph 974. So, sort of. But, I'm pretty sure the Saints are still waiting resurrection, that's why there's all those relics and dead bodies lying around.

And yet in a week Gallup has had a 12 point swing in favor of Barry and Rasumssen now has him up by 1.  And even in Rasmussen Barry's at 48% approval.  Republicans need to fight back, hard, against Barry or it won't matter worth a hill of beans how much Peggy has turned on him.  Your average voter watches Lost and Sports Center and is more worried about JoePa's firing and Peyton Manning's new team than about the fate of the nation.  If Jimmy Fallon tells him/her that Barry is awesome, Barry can actually be a cardboard box and it wouldn't matter.  Your average voter bases his/her opinions on weighty matter on what he/she hears others say, not on what reasonable people who follow and think about current events would conclude.  So if the economy is in the tank, Republicans need to hit that theme daily, in Charlie Rose's face, even if he's asking them a question about contraception -- not let pathetic growth numbers be spun by the media with no response.  If Biden calls Romney a liar, Romney allies need to hit back hard and fast, and express outrage that a man of Biden's character, a man who would sell out his own religious faith, would dare question another man's character, and point out the miriad of lies Barry has told -- not silently let charges be leveled at Romney and stick to him with no response.  Boehner should be pushing for a contempt of congress vote to be held against Holder, instead of aiding and abetting the media in their wildly successful effort to bury Fast and Furious.  And Romney and his minions better start hitting back fast and furious themselves, on all issues, or all the thoughtful musings in the world by Peggy Noonan won't be able to save the country from the Republicans' reflex, fetal-position non-response to Democrat outrages.
