— Ace About replacing Tim Tebow.
A reporter -- this is an odd citation; the source is a reporter -- says this:
“This has to be exciting for the average Broncos fan. Certainly, this puts Tim Tebow’s future in doubt here in Denver and the reports that we have heard were if the Broncos were able to land Manning they would make an attempt to trade Tim Tebow. So there’s no question the Broncos are all in on Manning. They want to make him the next quarterback of the Denver Broncos,” said Miller.“If things go the way they want, Manning will be playing for the Denver Broncos and Tim Tebow will be playing elsewhere. The Broncos are determined that Peyton Manning is the man they want to be their quarterback.”
Not sure why you wouldn't keep Tebow anyway, let him get some coaching from an all-time great like Manning. That's usually the way with younger talents. They pick up some fading star to carry the load while the young QB learns from him. The Giants did that when they picked up Kurt Warner; they had him for a year, then started Eli.
Peyton Manning may have a Super Bowl left in him, but are the Broncos on the cusp of being a Super Bowl team? Unless they are ready for the big game, except for the quarterback, it doesn't make sense to pick up a very pricey older star.

It almost never works out when a veteran is brought in to mentor a young player for the same reason it doesn't work in business. The older employee thinks he can still get it done, and is in competition with the younger one. Basically he is training his replacement.
Plus you have other bigger holes on your team that you are ignoring in favor of a band aid.

Really? I don't follow pro football any more (if it's not coming in from Netflix or Amazon Prime on my Roku, it's not on my television), but why? I know there is quite a bit of Tebow hate out there, but is that going to make up for the people who adore him getting pissy. I can see replacing him with a solid qb, but Manning doesn't sound that solid any more. I'm really curious on any insight on this. I'm a UF graduate and an evangelical, so I'm surrounded by people who love Tebow. However, I know that his offense isn't really standard NFL, and he's inconsistent. I'm not looking forward to having to listen to friends and family whine that he got sacked (figuratively speaking this time) because he's an outspoken Christian.

One problem I do see is that the personnel you'd want on the offensive line might be different for those two guys.

And this was only Day 1.
*****
The Broncos are merely one of perhaps a half-dozen - or more - clubs that are thought to be seriously interesting in signing Manning, even though he turns 36 later this month and is coming off a series of neck operations. He missed all of last season, and the Colts decided to cut ties rather than pay a $28 million bonus that was due this week.
********
Arizona, Miami, Kansas City, Seattle, Tennessee, Washington and the New York Jets all are considered possible destinations; Manning's former offensive coordinator in Indianapolis, Tom Moore, worked for the Jets as a consultant last season.

Sure, he'll bring Reggie Wayne along with him, but then all opposing defenses would have to do is keep Wayne locked down and it'll be Kyle Orton all over again.
And Orton struggled as much as he did with the Broncos in large part because the offensive line couldn't protect him. They gave out more sacks than a Kroger regional distribution center. Imagine that line trying to protect a quarterback who could potentially die from one bad hit.
But, yeah, Elway probably does see this as a chance to get rid of Tebow in a way that won't cause a fan revolt (at least, not right away).

Manning - 4x League MVP; 11x Pro Bowl; 6x AFC Offensive POY; 1 Super Bowl; Avg 10 Wins per Year over his entire career. Career completion % = 65%. Career QB Rating = 95
Tebow - 8 wins against 6 losses; Career completion % = 47%. Career QB rating = 75

It might've been a little unfair of me to call the Broncos' receivers lackluster, considering they had to get used to a new quarterback with an unusual style in the middle of the season, but they did drop an awful lot of passes that looked perfectly catchable to me.
Posted by: Genetic Tunder at March 09, 2012 06:15 PM (vQfJ3)
The dude might only weight 235. but he benches 350. If Tebow were to run to the left out of the backfield, it would be easy for a defense to make 60 yard mistake.

102 Doesn't make any sense to me. Mannings former team doesn't think he can do it anymore and they have no QB at all.
Posted by: Guy Mohawk at March 09, 2012 10:07 PM (yqRWu)
They had 28 Million reasons to cut him before today. So for them he was a bit of an unknown and if they are going to move forward might as well do it now so you have cap space for Luck and any other positions you want to shore up.
For other teams, they can look at Manning now, see if he's making improvement with his throwing arm. And it is his throwing arm not his neck that is the issue now. They can write up a contract that is heavily incentivized so if he winds up not playing up to his old standards they won't owe him as much money.
Also I don't think Indy could have hired him as a coach. Manning still thinks he's got something left in the tank and so he's going to want to play.

Maybe, but allow me to suggest a possibility that outcome would be unlikely. First, there was nothing particularly impressive about the Colts O-Line for all those years. Second, part of the process is to shift the O-Line to set up the proper blocking scheme and to pick up the blitzes and stunts. I think Peyton can teach more O Coordinators a thing or two about that. Simply put, I think it would be an apples-to-oranges comparison.
Posted by: Brock O'bama at March 09, 2012 07:00 PM (/WZ6r)
Tebow has just the right mix of factors to fit right in with the Broncos, and make them a good team. If the Broncos continue to work with him, and build the team around his strengths, he has the potential to make the team great.

Respectfully, I'll continue to disagree. Tebow played the softest schedule that Denver could play when they started him. He only beat sub-.500 teams during this run to the playoffs, and he had to come from behind to do that because he was simply terrible. His win against Pittsburgh in the Wildcard game was awesome, but the SS for Pittsburgh simply forgot how to play football. But, it was a good win nonetheless.
Posted by: Brock O'bama at March 09, 2012 07:20 PM (/WZ6r)
But, I suspect that's exactly what Elway's planning to do.
Bringing in Manning to help train Tebow? Great! Elway was planning to work with Tebow, himself, but Elway's a busy guy with a lot of responsibilities.
If they decided to bench Tebow and start Manning, I wouldn't mind. But Tebow should remain a part of this team.

Isn't mediocre better than "simply terrible"?
And yet, when the Broncos benched the mediocre Orton in favor of the "terrible" Tebow, it took Tebow thirteen games to rack up more losses than Orton had in five games.
The Broncos were able to pull together and win with Tebow in a way they couldn't with Orton. That kind of leadership is worth far more than a completion rating.
A Tim Tebow can learn to be a better passer, but a Kyle Orton can't learn to be a winner.

Send Tebow to Jacksonville. He's already a hero there and would actually fill the stands. And its obvious that Denver management really doesn't want to deal with the "phenomenon" any more.
And, oh yeah, Elway sucks.

Manning wouldn't just the QB, he'd also be the offensive coordinator. And while the current offensive coordinator might be happy draw up schemes for Tebow, I suspect that Manning isn't going to want to mess around with that. He's going to want to throw the ball out of the pocket the say way he did in Indy.
Tebow might be a slightly expensive TE, I he wouldn't make as good a backup QB to Manning since the entire offense would have to be so different for him. The question is, where does Tebow go? It's not like there are teams drooling at the prospect of signing a 47% passer. Maybe no one will be interested, in which case he might as well stay in Denver.

And undersized (height-wise) in reality...

"Well, it looks like from now on the safeties and corners will have to play the pass and stay deep even when they see it is a run. That should open up the Denver running game a bit. And the defense is already having trouble playing the pass."
"That's right. Manning has all day to throw. It seems like Denver can do anything it wants to on offense right now."
"I guess that's what happens when your Tight End is also a Running Back who can throw the ball."
"Yes, Tebow can throw the ball, but he still looks like someone throwing a burning saucepan into the sink."

Anyway, Orton didn't face a much tougher schedule than Tebow.
http://www.nfl.com/teams/schedule?team=DEN
The Orton-led Broncos lost close games against the Raiders, the Titans, and the Chargers (and the Chargers game was only close because that's when Tebow jumped in). Orton won a close game against the Bengals. He got blown out by the Packers (the one "good" opponent out of the first five).
Tebow later beat two of the teams that beat Orton, and two other teams that were just as good as the Titans and the Bengals (The Bears and the Jets).
I think with Tebow, the Broncos would've prevailed in those three close losses. When the score's been close, Tebow has consistently found a way to win (the one exception was, rather ironically, against the Orton-led Chiefs, and both QBs stunk up the field that day). Conversely, the games Tebow lost, Orton would've lost just as badly.
Now, I do realize we're comparing the merits of Tebow and Manning, here, and I feel that Manning's age and injury just make him too big a risk to uproot the whole system and go all-in on him.
And you can't build an entire team around a quarterback whose days are numbered like that. There's just not enough time. The Broncos would need, for example, new receivers and a new offensive line, or all Manning's gifts wouldn't amount to a hill of beans.

Everyone knows Peyton is going to Houston. They have the best defense in the league, great running backs and wide receivers, and are the best bet for him to get to another Super Bowl in the shortest time.
And I say that as a Broncos fan who'd love to have him here

Are they even interested, though? They've already got a really good quarterback, with a lot of years left in him. They've got really good everything, actually, including the kind of receiving corps and offensive line Peyton would need.
I'm not sure how Schaub would feel about being benched, but it'd be smart of the Texans to try to keep him around, just in case.
