— Open Blogger 1) It seems to me that the only retail politics that have flown over the last five years have been the Oprah "Here's your free shit" stuff.
2) We seem to lack true believers among much of our professional political class on our side. And I don't mean you, Rick. I mean the folks inside the Beltway in particular.
3) Drew brought up a good point in a phone conversation during last year's NHL playoffs... there's a big gap between that which works in terms of getting elected to the House and that which works in the Senate and presidential runs. I think it's less a question of message and more a question of polish. Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock are shining examples of that.
4) We've reached a point that all of us dreaded- I question whether we can sell austerity to a country that has gone whole-hog for free shit. Depending on the outcome of the popular vote, that may be underscored further.
5) To my horror, the nation has decided that it makes most sense to punish producers. As you'll recall, the Bush tax rates expire January 1st. We're not France (yet), but watching John Boehner's track record gives me very little cause for optimism. At this point, the question will be more of who can manage entitlements better.
6) We're going to spend the next four years praying that the conservative wing of the Supreme Court stays healthy and hangs in there, in the faint hope that the Senate can be flipped (for all the good that did us this time) and that a conservative president can be elected.
Realistically, who is out there that can take on and defeat Joe Biden, Andrew Cuomo, Hillary Clinton, or someone not on our radar?
Will the House go after Obama on Benghazi?
Finally...
Where do we as a conservative movement need to do the most soul-searching? It seems to matter little that the movement has largely de-emphasized social issues, so long as the media still controls the narrative in the country. As long as we face that uphill battle (particularly with the execrable Fox as our standard-bearer), we're ice-skating uphill.
Krauthammer said last night in his postmortem that the message doesn't need to change, other than to chase the growing Latino vote. I'm not necessarily sure that's the case.
As a movement, having been rejected by the nation twice now in five years, it is incumbent upon us to do the introspection we accuse the other side of being unwilling to undertake. We have played strong retail politics, only to have our message undercut by a hostile media. That does not obscure the fact that WE ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG in communicating our message.
If we cannot communicate the rightness of our message, in a way that overwhelms the negativity of the left, then we will continue to self-marginalize. I do not see any positive message that came out of the opposing campaign; quite the contrary, it was purely a demonization of Romney. Despite the absolute lack of any positive agenda, the other side triumphed.
We may need a complete overhaul. We may not. But we need to have some serious introspective discussions- perhaps even fights- about what our priorities are going forward. Let it begin here. Let it begin now- not by pointing fingers at one another, but by starting with what we did not do in 2008... define conservatism in simple, sellable terms, and build from there.

Obama and Holder should NEVER have gotten a pass on Fast and Furious. They should have NEVER gotten a pass on the Black Panther shit. They should've NEVER gotten a pass on Benghazi.
Time after time we had the chance to bring things up and show the American public WITH or WITHOUT the media what was REALLY going on and we didn't.
Capitalism is dead. Conservatism is dead. America is dead.
Once the "free shit" crowd takes over, it gets bigger and bigger until we're Greece.
And WE will STILL get blamed for it. And we'll sit there and take it, just like we ALWAYS do.

Yes you are.
And you destroyed the greatest thing this world has ever seen. Congratulations.
The world hated us because they were jealous. Their citizens were leaving to come here. They are happy now because we've sunk to their stature and they're happy.
You killed the American dream. Be proud of yourself. You'll pay for it for the rest of your life.

I don't want to believe it, but the error in that diagnosis is thinking that our problem is with "communication". That presupposes that this is about rational arguments and not identity politics, pure & simple, Republikanhass drummed into young minds in the schools and reinforced through adolescence by the media culture.
How do you "communicate" with people who aren't interested in even considering that you might have a message they might be interested in?
If we don't make a dent in the schools, we will fail over and over. Why do you think all the lefties like Ayers and Obama stuck around in academia?

That is not the question. To find out who will be the next GOP presidential nominee, all you need to know is who placed second in the last GOP presidential primary.
That is who the nominee will be.
That is always who the nominee will be.

Only if the social cons learn to respect the 10th Amendment. But as of now, the SoCon standard bearer Rick Santorum has expressly disavowed the 10th Amendment, and believes all social issues should be resolved at the federal level, state sovereignty be damned.
So, no. As long as SoCons continue to embrace nationalists like Huckabee and Santorum, rather than FEDERALISM, there will be no bridge between SoCons and Fiscal Cons.

George, I still remember a great post you wrote during the 2008 season. When those two jagoffs at a TFG rally went up to the mic and basically asked him for a free car and a job. One black woman asked for a car and another kid who was doing oddjobs while a frycook asked for a DJ job.
You said something that I still remember:
These people who want free stuff are like raisins in a cake. They are baked into our society and there is no escape from them. They are everywhere.

the more I think it about, the whole abortion issue is a red herring. Anyone who was basing their vote on "reproductive rights" was not on our side to begin with.
The real issue is that we are fighting a battle with demographics. You cannot win a national election getting 30% of the Hispanic vote, which will be growing piece of the electorate. It is time for our side to come with a sensible plan for comprehensive immigration reform.
Let's face it Lyndon Johnson was an advocate for the Great Society programs because he realized that blacks would be beholden to the Democrat party for the next 200 years (if I remember the quote right). Let's be the champions for immigration reform, and hope the Hispanics return the favor at the ballot box.

Economic collapse is assured, and Obama will own it. That's the only possible silver lining I see, sort of in a let-it-burn sort of not really silver way.
There's going to a debt crisis soon. The only thing holding it together is the pyschological belief that the US can't fail. Once the realization kicks in that it will fail, Bondzilla rages. If Helicopter Ben just flat out prints to keep the Federal govt going, then we go Weimar. If not, we deflate big time. The result either way is economic collapse. Only question is if it's death by fire or ice.
Some good advice given to me: Get yourself in shape. The days of expensive pills and treatment to keep lard asses going will soon be over. The medical system (federal health care spending growing at 9% per year) is the biggest bomb that will go off in this economic collapse.
It's going to be Zombieland soon, make sure you can outrun the Zombies. Read up on the Argentine collapse. That's about what path we'll take.
The electorate made the wrong choice in the most consequential election since 1860. America fucked up. And thus we are fucked.

Conservative message needs not only to be delivered, but to be explained. Most people on the Left believe that being a conservative is someone who approves of the KKK and hates women.
That's because they only listen to the MSM. Also public schools. Isn't that in the Marxist plan?
Posted by: katya the designated driver at November 07, 2012 10:09 AM (DoZD+)
Conservatives have an image that may not be fixable. To the empty-headed product of a liberal education system shaped by decades of exposure to leftard media and entertainment, "conservative" equals superstitious uneducated hicks, humping our cousins and driving cars with rebel flags on the roof while ranting about the blacks and the spics and the homos. It's a ridiculous caricature to be sure, but what a great foil for an unaccomplished nobody who wants to feel superior to someone. Its even better when all your cool friends share the same set of values. Win win! You've got to have a real backbone today to be young and openly conservative.
I've seen a suggestion that conservatives ditch that term and leave it to the evangelicals. "Constitutionalist" has been floated as an alternative. Maybe "Classical Liberal" would be better. It probably wouldn't matter; the media and entertainment industry will bring all of its forces to bear against us no matter what we call ourselves.
It galls me endlessly that a dynamic political philosophy, based on the thinking of heavyweights like Smith, Locke, Hayek, von Mises and Buckley is so consistently denigrated by an establishment that considers "Let's Take Other Peoples' Stuff" to be a legitimate political agenda. But that's what we've got.

Obama ran a campaign of fear and ostracism. It worked. Perhaps nice guys do finish last. Maybe the path to victory is to point fingers, demonize, ridicule and hate.
Then again, maybe the path to victory is just more free stuff. Better free stuff. Not free stuff like tax breaks and keeping your own earnings. But free stuff like private school vouchers, work-to-citizenship programs, internships with guaranteed hire agreements/contracts and community college tuition.
God, I feel dirty for typing it. But it seems to be what the people want.

There are three ways people learn: revelation, observation, experience.
Revelation is when a knowledgeable source tells you something, you apply to what you know, and learn. Conservatives and Liberals have been fighting this battle for a long. We say "tax and spend won't work, pro-growth policies will" they say "socialism works and the rich are parasites on the working man!"
Observation is learning by watching others. So conservatives say, "socialism hasn't worked anywhere it has been tried. Ronald Reagan made the other work." Liberals say "other socialists didn't do it right, like we will, Reagan wasn't all that great, and you are not a knowledgeble source. Hence, you are wrong and my revelation is correct."
That is the impasse. Like I said in a different post. We have to stand aside and let them have at it. We are gonna have to touch the fucking stove to see hot things burn us. We have to. They can't learn any other way. They can only learn by experience.
So what to do? 60 pounds of rice and 120 pounds of pinto beans = survival rations for 140 days.
Let them fail. We will rebuild it when they are done with their lessons.

I am going to make some short term changes that will benefit me, but, will not benefit the economy. I always go out for lunch because it is a break from my nutty Liberal co-workers. Now, that will be once a week or once every two weeks on payday. I am a good tipper, so restaurants and wait staff--sucks to be you. I like to cook, so no more convenience food. I like to shop for shoes and clothes, and had a plan to buy certain things on this Saturday during the Veteran's day sales. No more movies, I am cutting back my TV channels on Uverse. Books have always been an indulgence, but, no more, so NY publishing industry--sucks to be you. I disagree with the Latino solution, had Romney gone full bore amnesty like McCain did, it wouldn't have mattered. Latinos make up a very small part of the swing states, and in places like Florida, it's not much of an issue. Romney honestly would have perfromed better in states like Ohio had he been a border hawk. latinos vote Democrat because they usually come here impoverished. They could care less about gay marriage or abortion, they just want free stuff.
Also, Reagan gave a blanket amnesty, and it was quickly forgotten. How many Latinos do you know are Republican because of Reagan's amnesty?

Nice the see the circular firing squads still have ample ammo.
The problem I see is this: We, the conservative movement, have won the popular vote exactly once since 1988. Once.

It's easy to snicker and sneer at Boehner, but he did his job admirably last night. And his track record has everything to do with it. Thank you Speaker Boehner. You are the last hope for a sane America. The filibuster is gone. Good bye. Sianara. Adios. It's all in the Speaker's hands now. God speed Speaker Boehner!

It may be that the only way the GOP can win is the way Dems do it now: racist/sexist identity politics. Dems are constantly saying "The GOP is against blacks/Latinos/gays/women!!" and promising them all kinds of special favors, and as a result they get huge wins from those groups. But you never hear the GOP say "The Democrats are anti-white/anti-male!" and promising those groups special treatment.
I'm not sure the GOP *should* be doing that, just that perhaps it cannot win *without* doing that -- that seems to be where we are now as a country.
Instead, the GOP has been running on principled equality of opportunity, which happens to favor whites and males because they happen to be more productive (except for some Asians). It's the right thing to do. And it's why we lost yesterday.

iow, assume that no one has misundertood your message. Assume that the other guy is smart enough to understand it...and reject it on its own merits.
iow, it's not about sales and marketing, product placement or ad buys. It's about the product. You're in the wrong business, or you've got a bad product. Fix the bugs in the product, or replace the product entirely, and have another go at it.

But we have to recognize that the culture is hostile to us right now. Short of buying out Comcast or Disney and replacing the newsrooms of ABC or NBC etc. we're not going to win if we keep fighting the same way.
We don't have cultural capital. Our ideas have become foreign to the majority of citizens. That has to change. You can blame the So-Cons, or the Ronulans, but the reality is conservatism isn't cool. Yes its rational. Yes it actually works. But it isn't cool. And in our Pop culture obsessed society, being uncool is the kiss of death. No one relates it to the young. They're indoctrinated by school and pop culture against us to begin with.
Barry went to those who held the levers of our culture and sold himself to the people through them.
As distasteful as it might seem, our future leaders will have to master the levers of the culture in they hope for victory in the future.

I am wrecked for all the vets, war dead and their families who all kept the freedom flame burning, and handed it to us on a f*cking platter while we slept. And slept. I am eternally grateful for your service. We blew it. Not you. Us.

Liberals will continue printing money and giving away free shit until Europe collapses which will finally force us to confront the disaster that results.

I was in a bar one time and this guy goes berserk. Starts punching people and everything. I try to get out the way but he latches on to me!
There we were, he much larger than me, trading punches at the top of the stairs, and I was losing. Then, same as now, I came to the conclusion: sometimes the only way to resolve the standoff is to ride him down the stairs.
We need to just get out of the way. Let next year's Derby winner The Grand Bargain carry their liberal flag afield as far as the horse will take them.
What this election tells us is that the only thing that will stop them is the failure that their policies will bring. For my part, Obama needs to hurry up and finish futzing up North Africa so I can fight that war instead of my children and we need to hit fiscal rock bottom as fast as possible so we can set about fixing it before it ruins our children's generation.

Slama attended the evening's festivities with a group of Chicago businesspeople whoÂ’d all known and supported the president since he was a state senator in Illinois.
“I’m hopeful,” said Slama. “He’ll try to play to the middle, but he’s got the Tea Party to deal with, and he can take out his baseball bat and wail away and he won't have to worry about the implications of reelection.”
With the election of progressive Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts and Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin, Obama’s longtime backers feel the liberal spirit inside the president could be unleashed: climate change, gun control, and immigration reform perhaps heading to the top of the agenda. (After, that is, the “fiscal cliff.”)

Both sides have equal opportunity to suffer from foot in mouth disease. Like Ace said in an earlier post. We've reached a critical mass where the majority of people like their "Free Stuff" and have embraced the politics of envy.
There is no cure for this using rhetoric, models, clay figures or pictures drawn in crayon.
The only cure, that I see, is reality crashing down upon the country, the Gods of the Copybook Headings, if you will.
Only when people stand around, looking at the smoking ruins of their lives amidst the carnage of a broken society attempting to be corralled by power mongers, then the clue bird will arrive for some. Not all by any stretch, but some.
Do I sound pretty apocalyptic? Meh. Perhaps. I prefer perhaps a little hyperbolic. I don't think the world is ending tomorrow and we will all need to build an Ark to survive.
But the ending will not be pretty. The ship of state is going a direction, the people are happy with what appears to be their own self interests, and the inertia is built up. Hard to impossible to shift it...

Akin needed more "polish"? Delusional nonsense. Utterly.
You could have had the most brilliantly artful diamond cutter in the world spend a decade meticulously working over that turd with costly micrometric tools and trying to put a mirror finish on it and it would still have been a turd.
Akin's core message was that women have magic rape sperm detectors which prevent pregnancies from rape. And that if a woman becomes pregnant after being raped, the rape must have not been a "legitimate" rape.
Let me repeat that for emphasis. Akin's core message was that women have magic rape sperm detectors which prevent pregnancies from rape. And that if a woman becomes pregnant after being raped, the rape must have not been a "legitimate" rape.
Disaster. Total disaster.
The entire party should have risen up and unanimously ejected him within 24 hours of that statement. Romney should have flown directly to Akin's home state and had a tarmac press conference and demanded that Akin quit.
None of that happened. To the enormous delight of the Democratic Party.
Mourdock didn't say anything as openly boneheaded as what Akin did. He did not display a huge misunderstanding of elementary school reproductive biology, as Akin did.
But Mourdock put his foot in his mouth on that subject AFTER the Akin flap had already elevated rapebortion to a national level issue that was hurting the party across the board. That is unforgivable incompetence. Absolutely unforgivable.
Yay socons!

We are now seeing the result of the liberal educational agenda taught in our public schools since the late 70's/eraly 80's. There is an entire generation that has been vertically educated in social values and fairness to all. Emphasis on civics, classic literature, government, and most of all accurate history has diminished to the point of merely a footnote. Reading and writing skills are out of favor, verbal expression and creative spelling are in. Critical thinking is punished.

We most definitely are not communicating well. That being said, I believe it is because we allow the media to direct all political discussions. By doing so, they can aim any line of questioning to the left.
For example, when discussing abortion the media always turn the discussion to rape and incest or mother's health as if most abortions have anything to do with either. Most are simple the result of selfishness and convenience. Also they imply that Repubs want all abortions illegal. Not true most everyone has exceptions for such dramatic cases as rape and incest. But why do Repubs not re-direct the questioning back and ask the reporters (or the democrat, but I repeat myself) if they believe that it should be used as a means of birth control. Instead our guy always seems to fumble around until something stupid comes out that the media can spin.
Stop trying to play nice with the media. There has been a unspoken policy that says "if we are friendly with reporters they'll be good to us".. That never works. Treat them as the enemy because believe me they are.

You can't sell what people don't want to buy. Conservatism, at its core, depends on an acceptance that self-reliance and self-sufficiency are good things. I no longer believe that the majority of this country believes this is the case.
It is hard to take care of yourself. It is difficult to take responsibility for your actions. It is scary to know that you can fail. The majority of this country no longer wants to do anything hard, difficult or scary. There is no amount of messaging that can change that fact.

Just as 'Liberal' became an albatross and was changed to 'Progressive'
'Conservative' really isn't a one-word explanation of what we are, is it?
How about Republicans, the 'Liberty Party' ? I know, there's already 'Libertarian' -- not quite congruent but close.
Well, how about 'Classical Liberal' -- that one would give them fits.
I've no problem with 'Conservative' but to the Facebook dummies of the world, the word is already equated to fuddy duddy or uncool, man, or vagina police, etc.

It would seem that your time here on Ace of Spades HQ is coming to an end.
You're the worst sort of fake-conservative, BTW: you're in it not out of any principle, but only out of a desire for self-validation.
Oh, and by the way, you don't even get that because your thesis is actually wrong. You ask, "how much worse could Santorum or Gingrich have done?" and the answer is A WHOLE HELL OF A LOT WORSE. Imagine massive losses in the House, perhaps flipping it back to the Dems. Imagine losing states like MT, MO, and AZ on the Presidential level. Imagine Jeff Flake and Dean Heller losing their re-elects. That's what a massive top-of-ticket drag would have created.
You're not even considering the question rationally, because frankly you seem to care more about rubbing people's faces in shit so you can crow about how 'right' you were. But you're not even succeeding at that. We were ALL wrong about this election, in a very real way. But you? You were much, much more wrong than the rest of us.

>>>Oh I'm sorry. Are you forced to have a gay marriage now? Are you forced to partake in the burning of the marijuana?
1. I have to pay people to sit around and smoke MJ. When we are willing to let someone STARVE TO DEATH on their own choices regarding drug use, then I will whole heartedly support their "right" to recreationally use.
2. Marriage is a state sanctioned and administered compact. The only reason the state has ANY justification in defining, regulating and otherwise controlling human relationships is because of children. If the State cedes that children in fact are not the critical interest in marriage then the State has no business at all recognizing, regulating, incentivising or in any other way involving itself in marriage or any other human relationship between consenting adults.
This is why gay marriage is non-sequitur. To insist that gay people have the "right" to marry is also to assert logically that the state should have nothing at all to do with marriage.

Not strictly true. Remember that Republicans got the the "Bush Tax Cuts" extended without either the Senate or the Presidency.
This is what's so frustrating. Look at the facts- when Democrats actually try to pursue their goals, they require super-majorities in Congress AND the Presidency to get them. 60 Votes needed to "get anything done" in the senate? Only if your "anything" is more Marxism. GW never had a supermajority in the Senate, and was still able to get a lot done (of course, not all of that was good but the point stands).
We still have the house, which still has the purse strings. Let taxes go up. That'll suck for everybody- but it will suck for EVERYBODY. The free-stuff crowd will look around and realize they've been hit on two sides- they're getting less in Government Subsidies, and those evil corporations will be hiring even less than they are now.
But, ultimately, I think we're doomed. Reality won't be denied, but >50% of the Republic wants to try it.
Maybe when the smoke clears we can try again. Or maybe Texas will actually secede. I'd take either, at this point.

The belief that Americans are "undertaxed" correlates positively with the believer's *taxes paid.*
Understand?
Taxing people doesn't make them want to be less taxed; it doesn't inspire resistance. It makes them want OTHER PEOPLE taxed more. People with "skin in the game" want to see other people GET SKINNED.

The desire for coasting through life on meager allowances of free shit distributed by intellectual betters (as judged by hip media personalities) according to race, gender, and sexual preference is what rules American life today. And that will not change.
Unless the GOP can one-up the Democrats on playing Santa while appealing to a young hip demographic that hates being told "no", they'll never win another Presidential election.

Let me repeat that for emphasis. Akin's core message was ...
Yay socons!
Ummm. No. That wasn't Akin's platform or "core message" that was a horribly misinformed opinion combined with a terrible approach to pro-life.
Pro life doesn't sell when you talk about forcing rape victims to carry to term.
the same way pro-choice doesn't sell on babies that are ready to be born or *shudder* have already been born.
Ultimately if we take the road of "freedom and privacy" above all. A whole bunch of interesting arguments arise. Murder doesn't become legal when you do it in the privacy of your home. The same way many abortions should not be legal just because it involves a doctor.

Agreed. It was instant pain and penny pinching in '09 and do not expect things to improve, but why should welfare class be exempt from worries? Only way they could lose the roof over their head and get kicked out of public housing is to commit a felony.
If more lower income and middle income workers have taxes increased from the expiration of Bush tax cuts, more will justifiably resent the welfare class.

no matter what, I refuse to believe America is mortally wounded. Yes it is dire, but I believe in liberty, limited government, and republicansim as established in the Consitution. Those principles have inertia that cannot be stopped by a stupid JEF and an electorate that wants to be provided for.
In the end, either here or in another manifestation, the world will have a place where individuals are free to succeed without limit and where government is constrained by the consent of the governed.

Yes, you sir are a political mastermind!

The Democratic strategy was to 'kill Romney', a man with a pristine personal life and a professional life filled with accomplishment. Fill in the blank with the primary candidate of your choice. Newt would've been laughed off the national stage, so would Santorum. Perry would've been competitive, I think, took himself out of the game with his embarrassingly bad debate performances (which are now understandable given the amount of medication Perry was using to combat pain from a recent surgery).
So no, it wasn't our choice of candidate. It was a combination of media bias (worth billions in its own right if translated to political ads), smart messaging aimed at targeted support groups and low intelligence voters (WAR ON WOMEN! GET YOUR FREE SHIT HERE!), and a singular focus on achieving the desired swing state results using whatever means necessary; that is, they cheated like crazy in selected urban areas already within their control, places where even the most blatant fraud would not be discovered or--if it was--investigated.
So if you want to blame Romney for anything, it was his McCain-like unwillingness to get down and dirty with the Chicago Machine. Romney considers himself a gentleman, a decent, God-fearing man who plays by the rules, and if you wanted to pinpoint the moment Mitt lost the election, it was the surprised look on his face during the foreign policy debate when Obama outright lied on national television and the moderator immediately sprang into action to cover for him. I saw it happen and recognized it for what it was. I think Romney was shocked to the core and never really fully recovered from it.

Well, actually I had an idea for a Reality Show that would do just that. Take two people. One wildly successful and capable person, another down in the dumps. Take everything away from the succesful guy (even the shirt off back), see how long it takes them to make it back to a middle class status (caveat is that they can't use education or experience on resumes). Meanwhile you give one-million-dollars to the guy in the dumps and see what he makes of the opportunity.

I live in blue territory. I have heard several times, as I'm sure a buncha you have too, that the media is actually - i shit you not - biased against OBAMA, and waaaah! never calls Romney out on his lies!!!! This is in addition to the frantic belief that he and Ryan would outlaw abortion and contraception and rape Big Bird and never order a terrorist leader killed and punch homeless kittens just for the lulz
I mean.....Ho -Lee - Fuck balls.
This is what we're up against. Not just a different interpretation of facts and reality, but a different reality altogether. Insulation and stupidity so massive it could blot out the sun. As the saying goes: you can't reason someone out of what they were never reasoned into in the first place. I have to agree with those on here who feel it's not our message or candidate, it's the now-majority of the fucking American people!
If we want the electorate to move from "Free Shit I Deserve from Evil Rich People!" to anything resembling common sense, we have pull a Breitbart: infiltrate the culture/education. Retreating only makes it worse! When nearly every major media, academic, and pop culture outlet 1) sucks your dick instead of challenging you and presenting you with uncomfortable, inconvenient facts (now known as "lies!!!!") and 2) anyone with a different view from yours is presented as just another Strawman McCaricature that's easily swatted down, is it any wonder you'll vote a certain way? or hiss like a frightened cat at any dissent?
I really feel that Romney was the best we had, whatever his flaws. The real, and biggest problem is that way too many people see conservatives as either stuffy old rich white guys in suits who hate uppity gays, women and minorities, or backwoods rednecks that hate them uppity gays, women and minorities. Way too many people are slavishly loyal to the democratic party and prog mindset (you could call it "cultlike"). Way too many people are *never challenged* in their beliefs, and then at some point those beliefs become nearly unbreakable. We could have the bestest message and candidate evah, we could get an endorsement from God himself, but if a majority is predisposed to covering their ears instead of listening because "REPUBLICANS ARE EVIL AND THEY LIE AND THEY'RE SUPER UNCOOL" has been drilled into them since birth, how much good will it do?
Then there's the whole issue of voters sympathetic to us staying home for whatever reasons, but that's a much more complicated topic, in my view, and now I'm exhausted and ready for a nap.
I must also concede that I've never felt as sympathetic to the "fuck it, let it burn and swallow them all" mindset until now.

I'm still scratching my head as to how Obama took a popularity revolt to the chin, the Republicans fielded the most business, economics and math savvy candidates ever, yet 14 million few voters turned out and he still survived to win. I'm left only to think that Americans are so entitlement oriented and self-centered that they make the French look like Jesus and it will take a catastrophe greater than Pearl Harbor, 9/11,the DotCom/Housing/Wall Street implosion, and Hurricane Katrina combined to awaken its citizenry from their slumber. I agree 1000% personally (to eleventy), and it can be framed as a 10th amendment let the states do what they want issue, but I'm not convinced politically it is a winner.
I argue that the GOP could be the party of gay marriage, abortion, mj, and we still would be out of power because we arent about giving away free shit.
Yes the social issues are used as a wedge to drive some voters away, but if you cave on those issues you will lose part of your base. What would be the net result?
I fear the bottom line takeaway is that the electorate wants a bigger government to provide them stuff. Not sure how to square that with conservative principles.

2. Educate your children as conservatives. That is, don't enroll them in public schools and acquaint them with conservative thinkers rather than leaving them to the mercy of a crass mass culture. Throw out the television while you're at it.
Steve Sailer is right: demography is destiny. That's a lesson that conservatives should be taking to heart in the wake of this disappointing election result. At the end of the day, if you want to have the Republic back, then you need to have a population that actually demands a Republic.

The GOP is the party of Losers. This is accurate and true. There is a term for people who consistently, and by their own doing, lose. That term is “Loser.”
Mitt Romney – a man with, perhaps, 1/4 the charisma of Ronald Reagan – tried to use the Reagan “shining city on the hill” approach. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, Romney forgot that Reagan also was a master at having his minions bury Carter in mud – as Carter deserved.
We have never seen an opponent more vulnerable to negative campaigning. They used a “war on woman” approach, to incredible effect. “You’ll be back in the fields!” they lied – but it worked.
Romney?
War on religion? No, we can’t say that – that’s mean. True, but mean.
War on our soldiers?
Apology tour? Said it once, but letÂ’s not get too dirty. ThatÂ’s oooky.
Upcoming fiscal cliff? Obamacare? Revenge? Let’s take a “I’d rather
vote for Love of Country” approach, instead of calling Barack a jerk –
which is what he is.
Goody Two Shoes got his ass kicked, just like Goody Two Shoes always do.
Karl Rove… what a loser. Hey, Karl, did it ever occur to you that the women and minorities in the GOP are largely viewed as tokens? It doesn’t matter that they’re not – the truth has nothing to do with this. What did the GOP do, 3 years ago, to build a base in the female, latino, and black communities? How much longer do you think “Angry White Men” can carry the water?
Many – perhaps most – Latinos are conservative. Where was the concerted effort, going back 3 years, showing where this was being cultivated?
“I had folders brought to my office.” Well… if THAT doesn’t make women feel as if they are foundational to the party, I don’t know what does. I know: let’s toss Condi Rice out there, again, to show that we love women. Yeah, all seven women actually WATCHING the convention were deeply, deeply moved.
Karl Rove, our genius chessmaster yoda, had a problem with the Tea Party. Our opponents took a vile counter to it – the occupy movement – and turned it into gold. Heaven forbid the GOP actually LEVERAGED the Tea Party – used it to cultivate Latino, Women, and Black votes.
Blacks are well known as having issues with gay marriage. So are Christians. And black Christians? Bonus. I like how the GOP worked that angle. We will *mention* black unemployment, but let’s not spin up some serious ads that highlight it. Let’s not get people screaming “racist,” because that makes us uncomfortable… even if it is, in fact true – about them, not us.
Well done, Karl. Nice Job, Mitt.
And Benghazi? Ignoring that after the first debate was Genius. Sheer Wile-E-Coyote Genius. Sort of like how Reagan gave Carter a pass on the hostages. We wouldn’t want to be offensive now, would we? When Mr. President said “I take offense at that,” heaven forbid you go for the throat and say something like “how do you think the families of the men you let die feel, Sir?”
That would be *negative,* and NEGATIVE IS BAD.
It works, butÂ… please, letÂ’s not even discuss it. ItÂ’s too filthy to discuss.
Pinkies up when you hold that tea cup. Keep that shirt unwrinkled and your hair combed.
Let’s pretend that the internet doesn’t exist, that the attention deficit generation is a fantasy. Let’s not hunt for votes there – it’s not civil. We’ll just post nice, “city on the hill” web pages and YouTube videos.
Barack Obama is a lying snake. His campaign was 100% lies and mud and personal attacks.
HeÂ’s also a Winner.
Mitt Romney and Karl Rove, OTOH, are Losers. Capital L Losers.
“This isn’t a defeat of Conservatism,” Mark Levin will be saying in about 90 minutes. Bullsh*t. Of course it is.
We got the message out. What we didnÂ’t do is remind the world that the man who is now getting 4 more years is a lying snake. A SCOAMF if ever there was one.
Good thing we didnÂ’t remind them of that. Now we get 4 more years of it.

For the free shit crowd, the vast majority of people who get free shit don't even know what free shit they get. Many of the people who don't pay income tax work hard for their money and many don't get free stuff. They may not pay for others free stuff, and they probably do not want to. They also don't draw the distinction between paying no income tax and paying social security and medicare. Thus, they believe they are paying for stuff, and would generally oppose the free shit crowd. These are the generally white working class households that did vote for Romney in pretty good numbers. Romney's 47% comment hurt badly here, but hurt more with working class Latinos.
I love Paul Ryan. the problem is he is too wonkish. He needs to connect it back on a fundamental way to WHY liberty is important and WHY it is important for you to rely on yourself. He can get lost in the budget numbers. The numbers are too big and too abstract for 99% of the country (and I do mean that percentage literally). Romney could have closed, but always seemed one step away from that. I think he did not want to appear condescending, but on some elemental level you need to constantly come back to FIRST PRINCIPLES. Brought out articulately and frequently, they will start to sink in. These were minor problems, but they are the same for McCain as well. Palin believes in the first principles, as do Ryan, Romney and McCain. She was a a better messenger for them because she only spoke in first principles. Thus, the media killed her credibility.
The other issue is somehow we decided that we needed ideological purity on every issue despite reality. As one of the earlier threads on the Senate races and abortion noted. Even if we get a clear majority in the future to repeal Roe v. Wade, there will NEVER be a majority that would outlaw abortion in the cases of rape, incest and life of the mother. PERIOD. I understand the logic that in cases of rape or incest, there is a philosophical reason to distinguish between those and life of the mother. However, that distinction is too fine for a pluralistic democracy. Mourdock proved that.
What killed us was the ideological purity on immigration as well, probably much more so. Obama's economy may successfully stop most illegal immigration, but it will NEVER stop ALL of it, and a rebounding economy, even a weak one, will drive it back up again. First, we need to vastly increase the amount of legal immigration. That is simple fairness. People see the illegal gardener or neighbor or relative, they don't see the poor schmuck sitting in Guatemala or Mexico or Ireland who played by the rules and still sitting in their country rather than waiting tables or working here. If explained, they will intrinsically understand that. Second, people will not stand for watching 15MM or 20MM people, or whatever the right number is, deported involuntarily to satisfy some crusade. It will not seem fair to them, even if they understand that it is wrong that they are here. Amnesty WILL happen, it just needs to be on terms that balances the unfairness to the person who stayed behind and that does not overly reward the law breaker. This is especially true for the children who were either born here or were brought here at a young age and only know this country. Personally, I would double the new number of visas, force every illegal to register. If they do so, they will be in a lottery and we work through the backlog over time. If you don't commit another crime while you wait, you get a green card.
Part of the problem is also the campaign itself. As someone pointed out, Santorum would in theory be next in line. That won't happen. I have met Santorum, he is very personable. He will NEVER be President. If he won the nomination, he would lose to someone as bad as Biden in a McGovern or Mondale fashion. He might not even carry a state. However, that is not the point of this. The more moderate candidates have to pass muster ideologically by our media. Talk radio. Bloggers. Many of whom have the luxury of being able to throw stones and not worrying about winning elections. They want purity; they DEMAND purity. PURITY LOSES ELECTIONS FOR CONSERVATIVES. Neither McCain nor Romney were pure conservatives or to use Romney's phrase 'severe conservatives' (an truly egregious and self-defeating choice of adjective). Thus, they found themselves without an ideological rudder. They needed to court the base, but in doing so were not true to themselves. As has been pointed out, including by Santorum, Reagan could not pass through the purity gauntlet set out by talk radio and the blogosphere. He compromised and took what he could get always. However, he was always guided by FIRST PRINCIPLES.
We need to get back to those. Articulate them well. Articulate them constantly. Tie them back to the people constantly. Make them understand why those principles matter to them. Give the same speech 500 times. Big deal. The idea that conservatives want to make you freer and richer are things that WILL SELL. People have to be made to understand that wealth creation through redistribution does not make the SOCIETY or the WORLD richer and doing that makes everyone less FREE. If you work for what you have, it is yours. If it is given to you, it can be taken away. Remember that the number of people who are dependent and know it is quite small, Simple stuff really.
For 2016, I want someone who understands these principles and who can communicate them effectively and happily to everyone. I don't care if they have compromised somewhere in their life in the execution of these principles. The most effective advocate for them should win the nomination and the election.
Choosing Rubio, Martinez, Rice, Ayotte or Haley (not meaning to leave someone out) simply to superficially appeal to a relatively small, but growing, demographic would be an obvious ploy and would be shot full of holes. One or more of them may meet the substantive test, and if they do, great; if not, the MESSAGE pounded over and over again, not the MESSENGER will matter more.

The problem is that the other side's message, based in greed and free stuff, is simply more appealing to a depraved electorate.
Conservatism cannot win against that.

This man is and was loathsome.
Mitt Romney and Karl Rove just don't get it. Obama should have been savaged.
Negative campaigning works. Bush 1 had his Willy Horton. Bush 2 had his Swiftboats.
Obama is scum. Mitt Romney didn't want to remind the American people of that, so now we get four more years of it.
Goody Two Shoes got his ass kicked - just like he always does.
Fight to win, or stay home. Duchess of Queensbury rules is for imbeciles

America just stepped off of the world stage--and fell face first into the orchestra pit.
No, we're not France--yet--but we ARE Great Britain. Where once we had an empire of sorts--we were exceptional--now we're just has-beens, a bunch of rusty customers. Think I'm exaggerating? Ask me again when the debt tops twenty trillion (in three years--assuming we haven't first crashed into a full depression.
We know how to build nuclear power plants, we're sitting on top of caverns of hard black coal, we let moose drool trump our oil drilling intersts in Alaska, and we elect as president a lisping thin-skinned fop whose idea of power is the wind blowing across pond scum.
When we're all working thirty hours a week at Red Lobster and getting our medical care administered at the DMV (no, you can't have a new hip--but you can have a gender-preference abortion), half the country will remain so stupid as to be satisfied. Benghazi? What's that? Seven-point-nine percent unemployment? The new norm! Five trillion in new debt? So what?
Your problem is not you; it's some rich guy--that's it, some fat cat is fucking you over! Free shit! Get your free shit!
This nation once held a free election in the middle of a civil war.
Today, morons cite Hurricane Sandy as the TOP reason they voted for the president's re-election. In other words, the last thing they saw on TV drove their whole decision-making process. Elections now are just like American Idol.
We will not recover from this. The republic is finished.

You're right about the Senate and it's time to undersatnd that doctrinaire conservatives can only win statewide races in a few States, unless they are really exceptional candidates a la Rubio. But even ina smallish State, a statewide race is much tougher and draws a different kind of scrutiny than a Congressional race, or a race for State/Local office.
Akin and Mourdock--what can you sat about someone too stupid to just STFU and stick to a well-thought-out script when asked such obvious questions? Akin was just an idiot, Mourdock less so, but he phrased it poorly and why the hell was he extemporizing over a question he had to know would come? Not ready for prime time.
Look at the Tea Party darlings who knocked out sure winners in 2010 and 2012 and the GOP should have at least 50 senators. We've had a lot of talk about getting the most conservative person who has a chance, and well, all that gets is Majority Leader Reid. How about the person with the best chance of winning and then voting for Majority Leader McConnell, and then we can be irritated with the Collinses and Snowes but the GOP will control the agenda, at least.
