Poll: Romney Ahead of Obama in Texas Michigan
— Ace

Michigan?

47.66% - 43.88%.

Oh, and Scott Brown has gone ahead of Would-Be Senator Squanto.

PPPÂ’s newest poll on the Massachusetts Senate race finds Scott Brown opening up a 5 point lead, 49-44. This is the first time Brown has led in one of our polls since June of 2011. Our last poll, in June of this year, found a tie and the two before that had modest leads for Elizabeth Warren.

16 I think the shat is real in Michigan. This from Detroit Live. ]Republican Mitt RomneyÂ’s presidential campaign is bringing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to Michigan this week. Walker is expected to visit Thursday in Grand Rapids, although the Romney campaign had not yet released specifics of the trip. Walker also is expected to attend a fundraiser on behalf of Romney in Kalamazoo on Thursday. The Detroit News reports that another Wisconsin politician -- U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, the presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee -- will make a campaign stop in Michigan on Friday. The Romney campaign would not confirm that Tuesday morning.

Posted by: Dirks Strewn at August 21, 2012 12:28 PM (D9CxV)

46 I live just outside Detroit, and this poll doesn't surprise me all that much.  Obama has whatever black turnout there is [roughly, because I know more  personally more than a few blacks who won't say it publicly, but they support Romney], but that may be depressed for several reasons, *and* the relatively new city clerk in Detroit has done a decent purge of the voter rolls.  I don't see how there can be many more than 300K votes coming out of the D, and quite likely not that many.

The black suburbs are currently wildly roiled with budget problems, and the re-districting has pitted many long-time black Dem elected officials against each other.  Both will probably depress the black vote.

Outside Detroit and the college campuses, support for Obama is limited pretty much to teachers' unions [but not all teachers] and the UAW.  Still not that many votes.

The Tea Party is stronger here than most believe, and if the idiot Establishment GOP [is that too redundant] can avoid stepping on their own dick, Dems in general are in trouble.

109 ejo, Snyder isn't *that* Republican [although he's enough for me, since he really isn't part of the Establishment], and Granholm *really* left people unhappy.

Anyway, the Dem lean in MI comes largely from the unionized base, and there will probably be a constitutional amendment on the ballot 'preserving' union rights [mostly to big pensions and coercive collective bargaining] that may bring out a lot of Dem voters.

Having said that, even some retired union friends of mine are pretty fed up with Obama and Stabenow.  I've heard her called "Debbie Stupidcow" more than a few times.

Pete Hoekstra is pretty widely considered and *sshole, but at least intelligent.  Stabenow will have to hide and run a 100% media campaign or she can be beaten.  The woman is just dim.

Um, he doesn't. If Romney took PA, WI and MI without losing OH or FL (and wtf is IN even doing on that list?) you're talking like 350+ ev's.

Any 1 of PA, WI, and MI going red will probably call the election right there. It will never get to CO or NM, I don't think any of those western states have double digit ev's anyway. PA would render them all moot.

CARNEGIE, Pa. - Paul Ryan said today that President Obama "sort of drops his veil" at times, apparently suggesting the president doesn't always reveal his true beliefs.

"Every now and then President Obama sort of drops his veil, he's less coy about his philosophy. He sort of reveals his true governing policy, what he really believes," Ryan said to a crowd of over 2,000 people.

"Remember this other time where he was caught on video saying, 'People like to cling to their guns and their religion.' Hey, I'm a Catholic deer hunter. I am happy to be clinging to my guns and my religion."

Ryan also slammed Barry on his you didn't build that and spread the wealth around comments. Which has to piss the MFM off since they like to ignore these comments by Barry.

"You're going to hear a whole lot of distortions because that's all he (Obama) has to offer."

The line he crossed was basically saying women couldn't get pregnant from rape because of magic biology protection. So logically if a woman did get pregnant from a rape it must have not been a rape! It must have been consensual because otherwise her magic biology protection would protect her. This is the sort of thing the Taliban would endorse or our new "Allies" running Egypt.

140 Not that it matters, but if there were a ton of girls getting rape pregnant, then the left would be trotting them out all the time, instead of relying on their shock troop arm, like the Onion, to create fictional joke attacks on Akin.

The thing is, there is a line of thought that there aren't that many rape-pregnancy out there. ....

So then.....if a rape-induced pregnancy is so rare, then why the big objection to the exception?

This is what I have trouble with.

I am pro-life.

And by that I mean...a pregnancy that is the result of a consensual, loving act.

If some barely human scumbag raped me....and got me pregnant....forcing my genetic material to be combined with his, forever....then, you damn betcha I would high-tail it to have that abomination terminated.

And terminated with extreme prejudice.

The good Lord gave me a brain, and I try to use it.

Being forced to gestate against my will is something that I will never be onboard with.

I honestly don't think that's the case.  It's much worse.  Those with giant egos and a thirst for power can be persuaded; they can be bought or influenced by ego strokes and other powerful, behind-the-scenes positions.

Aiken, I think, honestly thinks he's being selfless in his stubborness. He's convinced himself that it's not about him, it's about a larger principle - political fallout be damned.  He's going to build that ark not because he's proud of it or because he wants the attention - but because he thinks God told him to.

He's dangerous, but not for the usual inside-politics/thirst for power reasons.

245 The problem with his comment (sadly) wasn't the "legitimate rape" part.  That's actually a fairly benign gaff that could be explained away with an "I sacrificed clarity for the sake of brevity" excuse.

The problem was the whole comment itself.  It's not like it's new that the media is going to ask "but what about rape/incest?" whenever you oppose abortion.  As a politician it's your job to be prepared for those obvious questions, and Akin simply wasn't.  What's his excuse for that?

We already have a Joe Biden, he's in the other party, we don't need one of our own.

I've made it a few times for Christmas Eve, and it's really not that bad. You can make the duxelles the day before, so that when it's time to cook you really just have to assemble things. Only problem is the bottom of the puff pastry can get a little soggy. I've read that if you put thinly sliced ham on top of the pastry and under the meat, it won't get soggy. But I've not tried that yet.

I feel the key issue for me at least is that there was never an exercise of any sort of choice. If you have consensual sex then too damn bad. Live with the consequences. With rape there's no decision by one of the parties to engage in the behavior which leads to the pregnancy. One party is essentially the other as a petri dish. With the life of the mother, 1 dead person is preferable to 2 dead people. It does sometimes happen that women choose to die in child birth so that they're babies live but such a noble decision should not be forced. Self preservation is too powerful an instinct for most. Just my opinion. Keep in mind rape, incest, life of the mother= less than 5% of all abortions so it is sort of a small issue in the grander scheme of things.

283 Angler, at this point its all they can do.  I think Mitt's strategy was to get out of this early by applying enough pressure to Akin with the hopes that he would resign.  And everyone played along (even the talk-show hosts). The money guys threatened to withhold money.   Unfortunately, they did  not expect Akin to be crazy enough to say screw it, I'm all in.  Sometimes you lose because the crazy guy  calls your bluff when he is holding nothing but an ten.  Now it looks like a big-overreaction.  We will see how this works out.  It provides some inoculation, but it may come at a steap price, and now you have lost control over the guy.  They could have told him, look we will back you, but here is what you will say and when.  I don't know.  The plan almost worked perfectly.

Most Freepers are somewhere between Joe Biden and Moldy Bread on the IQ scale.

I tried to grow moldy bread that was supposed to make penicillin as a grade school science project. All I got was stinky black slime that was way more intelligent than the average Freeper.

There's a good reason why it's nicknamed "The Kook Star."

293 The plumber is here. After 30 minutes of consultation and poking around, we've pretty much decided to stop trying to fix the old stuff and just replace it with all new stuff. From the old copper and galvanized and lead to new pex and "tool-free" fittings. Now just waiting for the estimate (and for my wife to stop asking questions). My mind is already made up. rip it all out and never tell f-i-l we undid all his 'help".

No rape exception is a tough sell.

But you know what's an even tougher sell.  A grown man who until yesterday thought that sperm has to sign a consent form before it can make a baby.  A grown man who until yesterday thought that every single woman who got pregnant from rape 'secretly wanted it.'

That's a tougher sell.

259....But would you be gungho to terminate the 'abomination' if he were 3y.o.?

3 yrs old? ....Wtf are you talking about.

I wouldn't let it get that far.

It is a tough issue. No one wants rape victims to have to suffer for 9 months but as a rule we never ever blaim children for anything that their parents have done.

This is circular logic, you know.

Bottom line....this is an extremely personal issue.

Like I said, if I were empregnated by a rape....I would terminate it.

Other women might not.

I think that the option should be available.

Personally I do not think the morning after pill constitutes abortion so I have an easy out - take the damn pill ASAP if you're raped and don't get pregnant to start with.

Posted by: entropy at August 21, 2012 05:05 PM (TULs6)

Well, if I am able to see straight, through the bandages....and walk....or crawl....or by some means get myself to a drugstore after being brutalized, to get the 'morning after pill'....then I would do that.

Because that's not a substance that I keep on hand.

"take the damn pill"....is a really flipant and dismissive attitude, btw.

312 "take the damn pill"....is a really flipant and dismissive attitude, btw. Well that's basically my complaint, 'terminate the abomination' seems like 'a really flipant and dismissive attitude' toward the reality of the situation. But don't try to take me the wrong way, I have an easy out. I'm not telling anyone what to do, I think the pill should be legal. If you are beaten up and can't get to Walgreens, they will (and should in my view) offer it to you at the hospital.

313 It would be a great week if it wasn't for Fundie SoCon nonsense. You can tell mainstream conservatives have finally had it with 700 Club wing of the Party, I really don't care if these people sit out elections, at least we can have candidates we're not ashamed of and we can discuss REAL issues. Just remember, if you're daughter or wife was raped, SoCons like Akin would throw a doctor in jail if they were offered a morning after pill.
