Positive Early Thanksgiving Thread 2
— Ace

Because I really liked the last one. It made me happy.

There are other political threads here. Please, no damn politics. Politics can go in the fifteen other threads posted today.

A post to note all the ways in which your life is really pretty good-- and to remind yourself that, unlike the Other Side, your value is not determined by the percentage of the vote a political candidate gets in Ohio.

8 The last thread cheered me up too, Ace.

I like computer games.  I started a small blog on them last year.
It is tiny, and no one reads it, but it makes me happy to play games and then write about them.

I should really send some pieces in for the Sunday game threads.

10 4-- always a good answer. Here's something: If you're on Atkins, DaVinci makes an awesome eggnog flavored syrup. Just put it in milk (or, for a thicker egg-nogier drink with fewer carbs, a blend of half and half and milk), and it's a little glass of Christmas. I really eggnog.

11 Laura Ingraham did a "worst Thanksgiving experiences" bit on her show a few years ago.

A guy called in and said he and his wife transported the turkey to his m-i-l's to be cooked there.  His wife stuffed a can of Pam in the turkey's butt for transport, and forgot about it when they put it in the oven.  After about an hour, there was a huge "BAM!" and the oven door flew open and the can blew out a kitchen window.

I call "bullshit" but it's still funny.

I will go fishing on Saturday.

I will go to the range on Sunday.

I will love my friends and family.

I will pack for my yearly hunting trip

For Thanksgiving I will be making the long drive from the west coast for 10 days of deer hunting and bird shooting in South Dakota. I try to always hunt on Thanksgiving. It will be a good time with good friends. No news or TV, just simple pleasures and cold weather.

The beat goes on. Life really is good. I mean that.

30 I love cooking for Thanksgiving.  I miss my Mom and Dad so much because they loved to come to my house.  Now I use Mom's silver, along with my own china mixed with her things.  I literally feel her next to me.

Now, I cook for anyone of our friends who don't have plans or a family to go to.  I spend three days shopping and preparing all the sides, roast a nice turkey, and make three or four pies.

It's the one day my husband goes completely off Atkins and splurges.  I also make sure to send people home with plenty of leftovers.

I love Thanksgiving.

My brother got a new job that will bring him more regular hours and more of them at a higher wage. Since he has been struggling for the last year and a half to support his wife and two little daughters, this is a very good thing.

Setting records, that's positive right?

71 I'm reading Ffard and the Gray Mouser. I always wanted to read them. I think I like the idea of them more than the actual books. But there is some good stuff. "Lean Times in Lankhmar" is pretty funny. Ffarhd decides to get religion, and he chooses a cult with no followers at all just because he sees something he's never seen before -- the priest pats a boy on the head when *no one is looking.* (Well, Ffarhd was looking, but the priest didn't know that.) There's this fun description of the Street of the Gods where the cruddy no-account religions are on one end of the street and they move towards the other end as they increase in followers. Ffahrd's god is this kind of lame version of Christ, with a really weak back story, who doesn't actually do anything, and doesn't really promise anything to his believers, but Ffahrd starts singing Viking songs about him, using old Viking tropes, like how Issek of the Jug (his holy symbol is a jug, for some lame reason) has f*cked dragons and slaughtered Leviathans and rode giant eagles into battle and stuff like that. It's kind of a version of the "George Washington" song on the Internet. And then Issek's popularity takes off, and he begins moving towards the fashionable end of the Street of the Gods, despite his version of Issek having almost nothing to do with the "real" religion, except for the presence of a jug. It's actually very similar to Life of Brian, but I'm pretty sure this was written in the 50s. It's in Swords Against Wizardry, I think. Not sure. The other stories are so-so.

72 I'm engaged to a great lady, after a few years of frustrations, and getting to the point where I just didn't think I'd be serious about anybody, or trust anybody. Have a good job still. Have a great team, great boss. We work together, and while our personalities are different we get shit done first and foremost. Auburn's football season is almost over. Justified will be on again soon. I've been on a good poker run. My bowel movements have been reliable and productive.

80 --How does the Mengelberg compare to Bach's? Posted by: logprof at November 07, 2012 07:14 PM (jKE+Z) HA HA HA! Very funny. Actually it's a very good performance of old Mr Bach. Mengelberg did it every year for years in a church in (I think) Denmark, so he was very familiar with it by the time he made this recording, and so were his players. The result is an amazingly sensitive performance, in the Old Style (you know what I mean). Give me those Gypsy violins!

86 On the previous thread I mentioned I was thankful for the medical care that saved my father's life last spring (it was at Fairfax Inova hospital -- he lives in NoVa - probably the same ICU where Dan Riehl was the other week). And I know this is the no politics thread, but given the location and demographics of the staff who treated my father, they were most likely Democrats. The main doctor was south asian and the resident who I thought was the smartest, most effective was east asian (both were American born). So as much as I curse the Democrats. It is probably a 70% chance that a group composed of mainly Democrats saved my father's life.

88 Should add that I survived two different bouts of unemployment while under the first Obama term, never had to collect a dime from the government because I kept my nose to the grindstone and kept finding enough odd jobs to keep my family afloat.

It's not surviving.  It's thriving because your joy doesn't come from a president or a governor.  They can make your life more difficult, but they certainly aren't going to steal my joy.

96 I have a Lord who loves me, promises to be with all Christians ("Christ in us, the hope of glory), the solid rock on which I stand. I have a wonderful husband, a son whom I never thought to have, a home, good friends, an ability to do ministry and a pretty resilient temperment. Also, we got a new cat today after our old family one had died after about 17 years. She was an outdoor cat which came to the house of a friend of ours for food but now she has a new home and is already coming out from under the bed and allowing us to pet her, She is a lovely purring tabby with white feet

98 I posted back on the other thread but I remember what I'm most grateful for this year...getting the hell out of Durham, North Carolina.  That place is a Blue-Devil-blue pimple on the ass of a great state.  Now I live outside Charlotte in the charming little hometown of the sainted Dale Earnhardt, Sr.  There's redder places in the universe, but the people are nice, the town is great, Charlotte's a half-hour away if I feel like experiencing some heavy traffic and urban decay, and it feels a thousand times more like home than the God-forsaken shithole I called Zimbabwe With a Ballpark.

And no, I'm not a UNC fan either.  Chapel Hell sucks just as bad.

100 De lurking for a bit. Am having Thanksgiving at home with just us and the kids for the first time ever due to non-discussable reasons. So. Since I'm on Atkins (lost 30lbs since June. Woot!) I'm trying to figure out what on earth to cook. The Turkey is obvious as is some kind of green vegetable. But I'm kind of worried no dressing and no carby-casseroles are going to make my family a little unhappy with me. Any suggestions?

101 While our kid was home from A-Stan, between watching Fox News nearly non-stop, he watched an episode of Jerry Springer.

Heh.  When his dad came home from work, he said very seriously, "Dad, I think I know what I want to do when I leave the Corps.  I want to be a security guy on Jerry Springer.  I want to ho-wrangle."  My husband actually believed him for a second.

103 I have always been so grateful that it doesn't take much to make me really, really happy. That is a true blessing. My husband says that all I need is to be well fed, well read, and taken up a-gin the wall on a regular basis. I would add I need music, some perfume, gardening and the occasional pretty for the house....all very simple, achievable things. 'Tis the little things that make life rich, truly. Life is so so sweet. I am so grateful for everything I've been blessed with, and my husband is treasure beyond price.

I defriended a bunch of people on FB who gloated and posted shit, and attacked me...

That's positive...I am done with them.

Also, am an uncle again, which is nice. My brother and his wife are tall as hell, as she will be. I don't have kids, but it's fun to be around my niece and nephew, they are funny kids and the nephew is a genius. 10 and knows calculus and wants to learn more.

When I was holding him as an infant, I thought "I'll go through the multiplication tables" cuz I'm a nerd...as I did, his little eyes opened and looked at me.

Yep, he is destined for good things...but he's getting to the age where the teachers are fucking him up.

This whole entire mess starts in the schools. Where is the GOP? Oh yeah, Boehner.

Anyway...

And Michigan, where I live, is home to some fine breweries...bad for my liver, but good for my ability to destroy consciousness.

140 My garden keeps getting bigger and better. It was awesome this year. I ate many meals from the garden and wish I had frozen all the stuff I was too lazy to pick.

As it is, I'm still eating the produce from months ago and will have plenty into the Winter. I almost doubled the garden's square footage this Autumn. I can hardly wait to pore over seed catalogs before the fireplace this Winter and plan my next year's garden on some graph paper. This is a traditional seasonal pleasure for me and it is so good to have things like that to look forward to.

One trick I picked up over the last couple of years in gardening is to take control of the bad things as soon as you notice them, but be somewhat lax or permissive of good things.

Like; certain weeds have to be eliminated just as soon as you see the tiniest piece appear. But let's say you have some unknown squashes sprout out of some old compost, in a part of the garden you have other plans for. Maybe you change your plans, instead of treating this healthy thing like a weed. Let it go. You might end up with...fourteen butternut squashes setting in your windowsills, like me.

158 A guy called in and said he and his wife transported the turkey to his m-i-l's to be cooked there. His wife stuffed a can of Pam in the turkey's butt for transport, and forgot about it when they put it in the oven. After about an hour, there was a huge "BAM!" and the oven door flew open and the can blew out a kitchen window.

Hah.  This reminds me of the time I was first getting to know my former neighbor and former friend (whose politics do not mirror mine).  We were making tacos in his apartment; I started cooking meat on his gas stovetop, preheated his oven and went next door to my apartment to get the taco shells.

I got back and handed the shells to him to put in the oven.  He pulls open the oven door and there's a huge explosion which blows him damn near 7 feet across the room into the opposite wall.

This being 2003, I didn't realize he had an oven that was so ancient it had to be manually lit.   My "preheating" had caused a huge gas buildup which was lit from the flame on the burner upon him opening the oven door.

Good times.

I'm thankful for my loving wife and very proud of the fine woman and mother our daughter grew to be.  And thankful for the three grandkids -- they really light up our lives.

Grandchildren are God's way of rewarding you for not selling your teenaged kids to the gypsies.  (I've told my daughter that I didn't have any grey hair before she turned 16!)

180 Have you seen my little boy? He is the embodiment of cute. When I get home, even yesterday evening in a dour mood, he is all the excited, running around the coffee table while making toddler noises. I've got a great family who repeatedly goes the extra mile for my home. My MIL actually comes over and babysits 3 days a week so we can save on daycare. My mom drove three hours on Monday to come down and pick up the slack while my MIL was gone watching NASCAR in Arizona.

You know my wife totally expected me to pick up Diablo III? And was disappointed when I told her that the game didn't measure up to its predecessor and was a waste of time because she had played a large portion of DII with me. She plays LOTRO with me all the time. She totally supports me, makes me lunch every day, dinner almost every night. Whenever I get a wild hair she is totally behind me.

186 Oh!

While I wasn't around, Mark Leyner put out a new book that's *like* the old AOSHQ-inspiring books he used to make. It's called "The Sugar Frosted Nutsack." That's disappointing. But it's a solid, competent, this-is-a-book-by-Mark-Leyner performance after what feels like decades of unbearably shitty professional-writer garbage. Not a true classic of the stuff-by-Mark-Leyner genre (top six!), but you should give it a look. It has some jokes you'll like (Dennis Miller with a poetry PhD style) and the form is neat (but not surprising, if you know what sort of things Leyner likes to do).

211 I apologize ahead of time for bumming any- and/or everyone out.

I used to post semi-often, especially on the evening and overnight threads, especially if I'd had a beer or two (which may or may not be the source of that Professor Marius von Totenkopf silliness; he's now plotting his inevitable return on Twitter).  I've been lurking for the past couple or months or so.  This past year has been a roller coaster personally, and, to quote Slu (I think) on Twitter last night, it doesn't end on Hoor Island.

After 4+ years of trying to have kids, including 2 of stalling out in the adoption process, my wife finally got pregnant.  Everything was fine until about 23 weeks or so into the pregnancy when my wife started having symptoms of preeclampsia.  After a couple weeks of frantic hospital visits, she was admitted for monitoring for the duration with the expectation that the once she got to 34 weeks, the baby would be delivered, stay in the NICU for about six weeks, then go home with little to no problems.  The symptoms got bad enough that after only 2.5 weeks in the hospital, the doctors decided to deliver my daughter by c-section at 26 weeks, 5 days in mid-September.  For the first couple weeks, she actually was doing relatively well (lines removed, ventilators scaled backs, etc.), but lingering PDA issues and organ immaturity eventually snowballed.  One day my wife and I came to the NICU, and the doctors were crowded around her, and we were warned how bad the situation actually was. Within 36 hours, my daughter passed away, having lived 19 days.  That was a month ago last Saturday.

My wife and I are managing.  As you could probably guess, it ain't easy.  Thankfully, we've been blessed that both our families have been very supportive, and things are slowly getting back to normal, as much as they can, though they'll never be the same.

Prior to everything going down hill, I had been volunteering as the social media coordinator (read: running the Twitter and Facebook accounts) for a state senator running for reelection here in Delaware, doing my bit to help the cause.  I had to drop out as things started to get worse, and, thankfully, he still won last night.  Despite how crappy last night went overall, I'm disappointed by not despondent, wailing and gnashing my teeth over politics.  There are harder things than political losses.

I'd like to thank everyone at this website for keeping me distracted and my spirits up over the last few weeks.  You guys have all kept me relatively sane even though you didn't know it.  You're all like a weird second or third family with whom I can vent and be generally socially unacceptable.  Once things normalize a bit more, I hope I'll have the chance to post, argue, mock, and flame more regularly.

PS: I happen to be Facebook/Twitter friends with a few of you.  Any sentiments are appreciated, but please do not bring any of that up on either site and keep it on the HQ.  I'm trying to keep this stuff to a minimum outside of immediate family and close friends.  I just felt compelled to put something on this thread.  Again, I apologize for bumming anyone out.

235 Jane, yes to raised beds. When I start a new section, I usually do it in Fall. Turn the sod, pour on some compost, and seed it thickly with Rye. In Spring I turn the whole thing over again, flipping the rye down. A couple weeks later I carve out paths down to below the topsoil, and turn that topsoil onto the beds. Top off with compost, and plant in about a week or so.

The beds need to be topped off with compost, manure, or chopped leaves and grass clippings at least once a year to maintain good fertility, if you leave the soil uncovered most of the time.

A permanent straw or hay mulch a la Ruth Stout method will give you a layer of spongy black topsoil full of worm castings, just like what you find under heavy leaf litter in a forest.

But it's not a good strategy for areas that have a lot of shad and slug damage.

I don't bother double-digging beds anymore with this technique. The worms loosen up the subsoil enough for me, and plants can't really use that hard clay underneath it anyway.

I have a cousin who went through virtually the same situation about nine years ago.   He and his wife have been a great deal of help, especially for my wife.  Seems for now like time is going to be the biggest factor in helping process everything.  We've kind of ruled out the silly ways of dealing with what's going on (moving, changing jobs, getting a second dog, etc.) and instead coming up with more positive ways of moving forward.

Also, the news (aside from this site, Insty, and what I have to read for work) is on blackout.  TV is pretty much limited to British Top Gear or Sherlock on Netflix and Red Eye.  Oddly enough, this seems to be helping quite a bit.

I love Thanksgiving and I live in America's hometown, Plymouth, MA.  Lots of activities starting up here for Thanksgiving and they are all fun so I am grateful to be able to participate in them.

Thankful that I just got my power back after 4 hours being without today ... which makes me feel bad because of all the poor people still suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Thankful I have a job and can pay my mortgage and bills and still have a little fun and give to charity as well.

Also very thankful for white wine

House was 40 degrees. Funny thing is my boys were little and have fond memories of the sofa pushed all the way up to the fireplace hearth and sleeping with us under five blankets I am thankful for HEAT!

Exploding ovens:

When I was in college I lived in a ghetto apt for a year. I called it The Ghetto. It was in a concrete-block structure with possible asbestos ceilings. Sort of like an old warehouse for nuclear materials in Western city. A fourplex near bus route. I was dating a guy and decided to cook for him. I had a "Betty Crocker Cooking For Two" cookbook and knew how to cook a few entrees from that source. I was making "Chicken Cacciatore" in skillet, and had "warmed up" the oven for bread. The guy, we will call him "Dumbstruck," was in LR finding music for the gala event. I was happily stirring sauce when BOOM!Eleventy!! then instantly deaf and smelling singed hair. You see, I grew up in an all electric house and was not familiar with pilot light thingies, which need to be lit before use of oven. Nor did I ever cook, as I survived college on cereal, milk, OJ, meals at hospital where I trained and worked, and beer. So I had little need for oven and had also never used it. "Dumbstruck" came into galley kitchen (after admiring me from couch while I cooked) asking "What the hell was that?" Half my hair had singed up to my shoulder (hair was down to waist in length) and I was deaf and saying "Huh?" He turned off oven, took wooden spoon out of my hand, and led me to couch where I sat in shock. I am not sure if we ate at all (I may have had a concussion?) and I never saw him much after that (romance went up almost in flames). I later had a huge hematoma the size of my fist on my thigh, as the oven door flew open with force, singed hair and hit thigh, and shut. Asbestos ceiling, by the way, fell down in little pieces so I may have mesothelioma (now that I think of it!) and may have to sue someone. I am not a fan of gas ovens to this day.

The next day I was talking to a few neighbors (one in fourplex and another on block) and they asked if I felt the "earthquake" the day before. I told them it was I, ChristyBlinky Supermodel, cooking and making the earth move.

My husband did not marry me for my cooking skillz, even though I am very gourmet now.

267 @213 I'm very sorry for your loss. I know your daughter is in a better place. This was one of my grandmothers's favorite Bible verses, and I think of it often: Mt 10,29-31. (I'm so old, this is how we talked when we were kids...) "29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows."

But I wouldn't give her away for anything and she brings profound joys every day. She is currently watching her favorite movie, 101 Dalmatians. I'm chatting with my beloved, with whom I am to be married to someday and some ways already am. I tell you, boys and girls, you will never find a greater combination of sweet domesticity and kinky sexuality than my woman. It bites that the election went so badly but we will cut our losses and fight on and enjoy our lives in the meantime. Bless you all!

285 This may be a little too specific, but I am grateful for metallic cartridge reloading. Be forewarned! The next thing you know, you'll want an apparatus to test barrel harmonics. Or, at least, the equipment to make ultra slo-mo video of the phenomenon and its variability. When optics fail us, we imagine a veritable plenum of wind indicators for a thousand yards parallel to the arc of trajectory. Get down on your belly, shoot perpendicular to the arc of Earth's rotation, and see how far the earth rotates during the time of flight.

I post less often than blue moons, but this is my first read in the mornings, and check in many times during the day. I am also thankful that even though I am on the short list for the next round of layoffs at work, I have been getting nice nibbles for my next adventure. Ever the optimist. After church I look forward to the book thread, I read the gaming thread (though I suck as a gamer and usually have less than a clue what's being discussed), I have also enjoyed the chess discussion thread. I don't play but the information interesting. Thank y'all for the laughs. I always feel proud when I catch and understand the "inside" jokes. Oh, and I have to say that two of my all time favorite threads were the Winnie the Pooh/Christopher Robin thread from a few years back, and the thread regarding the death of Roy Schneider. (commenting on the 100 acre "wood", and comments from Bruce the shark). Still makes me smile. Long live Brian Denehy.

297 Oh, Hoss, I'm so incredibly sorry. I keep thinking of things to say, axioms like "she's watching over you now," or "You'll see her again," but somehow they just seem trite. I'm praying for you and your wife, and your little angel.

Your story did make me think of one of the things I'm grateful for: that I was born when and where I was. I was born a month early, but had stopped growing around 20 weeks or so.... any nourishment I was getting went straight to my brain. I weighed 1lb, 9 oz when born and was only ten inches long (and five of those easily were my head). I thank God that I was born in the "modern age," and in America.... and that I don't have many issues from the circumstances of my birth. Yeah, I'm roughly the size of a hobbit.... and my eyesight is horrendous, and my lung capacity and motor skills leave something to be desired. But I have full control over my faculties, am considered halfway intelligent, and can move and breathe on my own. So I've got that going for me.

I also am grateful to live in America because even though things didn't go our way last night, we still go to vote in a truly free election, without fear of getting blown up while waiting in line. I'm grateful I could drive myself to the polling place and be seen out in public without a male chaperone and wearing whatever the heck I please.

I thank God for my children, who give me such joy every day. Especially now that we are one week into an eight month long deployment for my husband. I'm so proud of him and his fellow sailors, but I hate that he's got to leave. My son is taking it very, very hard/ All I can do is hug him, and give my daughter kisses from him. They brighten my days, and I know without them I'd be curled up on the couch each day, sobbing into a bottle of wine and eating myself into a coma.

And I know this sounds stupid but I'm grateful for Facebook. As much as it drives me crazy with the politics, it keeps me in touch with people that I love. If not for Facebook I could probably go weeks without interacting with another human being other than my kids for weeks. Which, God, sounds so much more pathetic when I actually put it to words!

301 I just read the NY Post re: the new storm. Those poor people still trying to dig out from Sandy, now with 23 degrees, snow, sleet and flying debris.

Oh, and Nanny Bloomberg has "ordered" out of state utility crews to stay. Can he do that? I am sure they would want to stay and help or they would not be there anyway (or try to help when the unions are not interfering and calling them scabs and stuff). The city gave out 1500 space heaters to the elderly. What a mess.

LI railroad closed. Bridges to close in high winds. Penn Station closed due to "overcrowding."

315 Hoss, I am so sorry for your and your wife's loss of your beloved daughter. I do believe with all of my heart that our world was richly blessed the 29 weeks and 3 days that she was in it. I prayed that you, your wife and all those who loved your precious daughter would experience a step towards healing the pain her loss has left. What a blessing she was to have left such a void. Godspeed.

316 Today was my little girl's seventh birthday, and we went to Chevys. Crappy food, but she and her 3 year old brother loved it. Then my wife and I took them to target, got her a big present, him a small one, and will have a birthday party and bounce house on Saturday with a dozen little girls running around screaming. I've got a good job, a house that is too expensive but really nice, and I've got options. Today I am fine, and will continue to be fine. I'll continue to miss my dad who went to his final reward and was buried on a May day in California that rained and was just like an Irish funeral. Buried my mom on a similar Irish weather day in normally sunny California. And I will pray for them and for our country. For the next year I'm not going to care... Going to enjoy the kids, my wife, and have some fun.

317 I'm grateful for my wonderful husband, without whom my life would have no meaning.  I'm grateful that he's brought me closer to my family and closer to God.  If we end up hiding in the woods with nothing but each other, I'll be OK.

318 My son will be home shortly from school for several days for Thanksgiving. He's in his first semester of college nearby and is the light of my life. I see TV shows that have scenes about very difficult kids and realize how blessed my wife and I are.

319 Better late than never to the thankful party. I am a "once in a blue moon" commenter but frequent lurker for the past several years. Love the posts and love the sarcastic moron commenters even more. Ya'll made me laugh some yesterday and I needed it. We all needed it.

I'm thankful for my life. It's not too shabby. Even though I am completely burnt out at my job, I am grateful I have one. Thankful for my wonderful hubby whose first words after we learned the outcome of the election were "as long as we're together we'll be fine." I am also thankful for my doggies - all 8 of them. It's like having 8 perpetual 2 year olds running around the house. Our house can be chaos, but I can't imagine life without them.

God bless ya and our Country. We're going to need it.

320 I just finished Bill Whittle's "A New Begninning..." on YouTube.  I'm not going Gault, but rather Common Sense Resistance.
