PPP: It's Down To 1 In Ohio
— Ace

Obama 49, Romney 48.

They push the idea that Obama has the whip-hand because he has more already-cast votes. Well, that's nice, but the poll also surveys such voters. All in all, it's still 49-48.

In addition, CAC has pointed out that the percentage of voters claiming to have already voted in polls is almost double the percentage who actually have voted.

The RCP average is down to 2.1.

BTW: An erroneous report from Sam Stein is making the rounds, but his update essentially says "Nevermind."

His report originally said that Romney was moving 60 staffers into Pennsylvania, and looks to add more, which is huge, enormous news.

It is now corrected to say that Romney already has 60 staffers in PA, and hopes to add more. Which isn't news at all-- it's just the campaign saying how many people they have there now, and have had there for months. Plus, an intention to move more there, but of course they intend that. I'm sure they hope to close down their VA, NC, and FL offices and move people into Obama-leaning states. Whether they will or not is the question.

So, as nice as this one is, it's not true.

9 Only 60% of eligible people register to vote. Only 40% of registered voters ever turn out to vote. But if you were to do a survey asking who a person voted for, I guarantee you'd get more than an 80% response that the person on the line voted for someone. Those people who say they've already voted, they're 60% full of crap.

16 Reposting what I posted earlier:

Just looking over the PPP crap Ohio poll. REALLY, REALLY good numbers for Romney in there.

He is now WINNING on both the Libya and the Economy. The poll has swung TEN points more positive for Romney with him winning a majority on the Economy. Romney is at a near majority support for trust on Libya and swapped the lead with Obama in last week's polling.

He is losing the overall vote by 1% to Obama (48% O - 47% R), but the poll is saying the DRI split is 42/34/24, BUT last week it was Obama +5% to Romney with a DRI of 40/36/24. The DRI went from D+4 to D+8.

If it was last week's DRI sample with the splits used today, Romney would be ahead by three with 50% to 47% Obama. With last week's samples, Romney wins on the economy 52-45. Romney wins on Libya 49-45.

Romney is going to win Ohio with these numbers.

D+4 will equal a Romney win in Ohio.

PS:

Mandel with last week's DRI of 40/36/24 is at 46% to Brown at 47%.

A LOT of undecideds in the Republican and Independent columns though. Not good for Brown as Democrats are crossing over in larger numbers to vote for Mandel and there is only 4% undecided at this point for him.

Best case for Obama is that he can announce that he has convinced the Iranians to drop all nuclear research (that will never happen). If so, how many people would actually believe it? Not many.

If Obama is hoping for an Iranian October surprise, he is a fool.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 20, 2012 03:59 PM (2b4yb)

20 So what can we conclude?

That those who voted early are twice as likely to respond to pollsters (and make it into the 9% sample) as those who didn't vote early.

Which tells us what?

That the 9% is not representative of the whole when it comes to the ONE aspect of their voting choices that we can compare to actual results.

Treat all polls with suspicion -- donate, volunteer, vote.

39 A "deal" where we give the store to Iran will not move anyone into the Obama column, but it may serve as a rationalization for people who like Obama but might not have come out for him to vote. Like, it may move some folks from Jill Stein and Gary Johnson into voting for Obama.

56 Report: US officials say Iran agreed to nuclear talks Agreement was result of secret exchanges between Washington and Tehran that date back to beginning of Obama's term, officials tell NYT day before final presidential debate; National Security Council denies report Yitzhak Benhorin Published: 10.21.12, 00:51 / Israel News WASHINGTON - The United States and Iran have agreed for the first time to one-on-one negotiations over the Islamic RepublicÂ’s nuclear program, The New York Times reported Saturday, citing Obama administration officials. The announcement could be an indication of a last-ditch diplomatic effort to avert a military strike aimed at stunting Iran's race towards a nuclear bomb. Related stories: Romney, Obama face off with jokes at annual dinner Khamenei: Iran won't give in to Western 'bullying' Iran denounces Beirut bombing, points finger at Israel However, a spokesman for the US National Security Council denied the report. "ItÂ’s not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," Tommy Vietor said in a statement. "We continue to work with the P-5 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally." A senior administration official told the NYT that Iranian officials have insisted that the talks be delayed until after the presidential election next month. It remains unclear whether IranÂ’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has signed off on the deal. The understandings have been reached with senior Iranian officials who report to him, an administration official said. Sounds like possible bullshit to me, but I would not put anything past these cock suckers the last2 weeks. Be forever vigilant.

As far as MN, we are getting some ads here in the Twin Cities for Romney Ryan and TFG.  I think it is mostly for the Western WI crowd who listen to Minneapolis StPaul stations.  But it would not take much to convert it into a full out campaign.  Ads in the rest of the state have to be cheap.

But I Think the money would be wasted, If they win here, it is a blow-out.  And unfortunately there is no way Sen. Klobuchar loses to Bills.  If the senate race was close, I'd want R/R to campaign here and pull Bills across the line with their coat-tails.

97 Can anybody recommend a site that lists the sports on TV (on any channel) for the day? USA Today used to have a great one. They called it "Sports on TV" or something. Great one page that listed everything categorized by sport - NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, soccer, weird sport. If it was a sport and on TV that page listed the time and channel it was on. But USA Today has reformatted their whole site to be iPad and tablet friendly. And the Sports on TV page no longer gets updated. Too bad, cause it was perfect.

101 The point is JEF is playing defense everywhere now. Romney's 262 EVs are locked. JEF knows this . R/R knows this and are trying to expand the map. Too many places to defend and not enough resources to defend it. JEF has one route to victory now and that includes hoping that bogus Ohio polls come to fruition. JEF will see unicorns before he sees reelection.

So Romney's going to beat Obama on the strength of white voters.

How is this possible, Rovists?

If we can do this much damage with 60% of the white vote, then we'd never lose another national election in our lifetimes with 70%.

And though he's pandered very little, some polling suggests the Hispanic vote may be cleaving in the face of Romney's looming win, so as not to leave the brown vote totally isolated and at the mercy of the victors, a la the black vote.

Oh yeah, you better believe Hispanics took to heart Odinga's little line about 'punishing our enemies', considering which end of the stick they're holding right now.

Just as some of us predicted, to much moralistic Rovey type snorting.

Black and brown votes:  be nice to have 'em, dont need 'em.

129 @115.  Exactly.  The polling my firm did for our client weeks ago in Ohio showed Obama losing and Brown losing (although more narrowly).  So much hype has been expended in the media about how critical Ohio (and it is) that it would be devastating to Obama's minions' morale to see Ohio taken off the "swing" column.

Democrat voters are lazy voters.  If they think their guy is done, they won't show up and down-ticket races get hammered.

Assuming Mitt continues to be Mitt an Obama continues to be Obama on Monday, this thing is all over but the shouting.  It is a logistics exercise and has been that (and nothing more) since the first debate.

131 Speaking in Green Bay this morning where he was giving a talk to the Big Ten VFW Conference, Retired Army General Tommy Franks talked about why he is backing Romney for President.

http://www.jsonline.com/newswatch/175073331.html

“We can stay with what we’ve got or we can make a change … When you find yourself in a hole stop digging.”

Franks is among more than 300 retired officers who comprise Romney’s “military advisory council.” Franks led U.S. Central Command and oversaw the U.S. response in Afghanistan and Iraq after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

“I’m a pretty serious independent,” Franks said, noting that Bill Clinton gave him his promotion to general and that he served under George W. Bush.

In explaining why he seeks change, Franks said, “I think our troopers and military and veterans deserve to have the best equipment in the world, best manpower, best training in the world. They deserve respect and love at home and they deserve to be feared abroad. It seems to me that is what military leadership is all about. It seems to me leadership comes from the front, not the back.”

141 Only 60% of eligible people register to vote.

Only 40% of registered voters ever turn out to vote.

But if you were to do a survey asking who a person voted for, I guarantee you'd get more than an 80% response that the person on the line voted for someone.

Those people who say they've already voted, they're 60% full of crap.

159 About New Mexico.

It's called NEW MEXICO. Get it. It's not really part of the United States.

It's part of what we took from Mexico but the people already there stayed anyway after it became the US.

The other border states either kicked out all the Mexicans or shoved them against the border or they moved because the gringoes were a pain to deal with. (Arizona doesn't count as there was nothing but Apaches, lizards and snakes there at the time.)

Then the artsy fartsy crowd from the other area full of Mexicans (Cali) decided they could get away from the earthquakes and taco stands and Mexicans (indians) that don't make good servants and moved to Taos. The air is dry and clean and the sun actually freakin' shines during the day instead of the haze you get in Cali.

So New Mexico isn't part of the United States. It's part of artsy fartsy land. They like the Mexicans in New Mexico cause they're more spanish than indian and make good servants/maids/gardners.

It's like Connecticut with out the New England accent and the New Yorker arrogance and impatience.

Just mentallly push the state down into a line along the border and you'll feel a lot better. Works for me.

Now, how to explain Minnesota.

Same here.  I want to wake up November 7th, say a prayer of thanks for President-elect Romney, and never hear about an election again ever in my life.

Fat chance.  When Romney wins, Ryan becomes Vice President.   Which means we get to have a special election to fill his seat.  Yay.

I have been going to the polls for some primary or recall election or Supreme Court election or some special election on average about every 3 months for two bloomin' years.

194 @150  No prob.  It's interesting seeing the differences between what is published by media people and what goes on in professional telemarketing/polling/market research companies who do it for the money.

We all know intellectually that the media polls are for other interests than actually informing the public but it is still a bit shocking when you see it in black and white.

My company does what it does for the money and our clients don't pay unless we get them as close to the real numbers as possible.  That leads to a lot less bullshit.

We work for anybody and are working on various projects for both sides of the aisle this season, as we have in every election for going on thirty years in business.

I've seen days where Romney was down and I've seen Obama down for many weeks now, long before the media polls started swinging over.  We did NH and CO over the last couple of days.  As I said a few days back, after MI was so rough on Obama, that I'm interested to see where we go to find any good news for at least one of our clients.  CT, maybe.  NJ, possibly.

I'm serious.  If we start polling Cali, I'm gonna pudding dip in the office.

The bottom is just falling out for Obama. The top-line, headline, numbers are holding-up because they are being propped-up by sample reweighing, but underneath he'd all fucked up.

Obama needs a dramatic event to reset this because the current glide path is headed back to the South-Side of Chicago.

197 By the way, did you know Lutefisk is designated as an Indoor Environmental hazard?

www.indoorweb.com/toxic.html

"...

To understand the relationship between aquavit and lutefisk, here's an experiment you can do at home. In addition to aquavit, you will need a slice of lemon, a cracker, a dishtowel, ketchup, a piece of lettuce, some caviar, and a Kit-Kat candy bar.

1. Take a shot aquavit.
2. Take two. (They're small.)
3. Put a bit of caviar on a bit of lettuce.
4. Put the lettuce on a cracker.
5. Squeeze some lemon juice on the caviar.
6. Pour some ketchup on the Kit-Kat bar.
7. Tie the dishtowel around your eyes.

If you can taste the difference between caviar on a cracker and ketchup on a Kit-Kat while blindfolded, you have not had enough aquavit to be ready for lutefisk. Return to step one..."

Well of course there's that but there's also something to do with the freakin' inhuman amount of cold and snow. And flat land.

The square heads didn't have that much cold and snow back in the old country. So when the moved here and found something close to the homeland they took the extra cold and snow along with it.

They thought it was no big deal but I think over the years the flat broad expanses of SNOW and the freakin' COLD and the WIND may have sprung a screw or two loose in the average Minnesotan.

I know I can't watch Fargo without shivering. (yeah, yeah it's not Minnesota but it's damn close.)

And I was brought up near Chicago on Lake Michigan. Google "lake effect snow" and you'll find out what I mean.

Plus you know Chicago's called the Windy City and that freakin' winds' got to go somewhere. Yeah, right next door is Indiana. Snuffling up all the wind and old sewer gas from Chi-Town.

Did I mention it's freakin' cold in Minnesota.
Being raised in snow and cold and wind country has made me immune to the cries of the Global Warmists.

Me, I say: Bring it On Bitches. Send me some Global Warming.

I'm still cold from a couple winters in the '50's. Hell in the '80's I LIVED in Chicago and the winter temps got down once to -60 wind chill. Yes you heard me freakin' -60 degrees below zero. Fahrenheit.

So don't go teasing me with tales of Global Warming cause frankly I'm hoping for hell when I die just for the temperature being above 60 most of the time.

Michigan? eff' Michigan. Buncha knotheads cutting down trees or building lousy cars. Give them to the Canucks.

249 The problem with an October Surprise is that everybody and their uncle knows what an October Surprise is and is not impressed with one anymore, particularly if it is widely out of phase with what they have seen of the actual candidates.

Nobody is going to believe Romney had an affair, for instance.  People have seen the real guy and don't believe he's the type.

Secondly, so many states do early voting that you have to pull it out sooner and hoep it has legs, rather than dumping it the last weekend as in the old days.  So, it had better be able to be credible and stand up to multiple days of challenge.

The likelihood that Obama has something like that and hasn't yet used it gets slimmer and slimmer every day.  Pretty soon he will be beyond the point of no return.

MN is interesting.  We have a long history of actual democrats that tried to do the right thing like Humphrey; and a bunch of populists.  Humphrey led the fight to throw the commies out of the Democrat party in 1948.  If he tried that today, he'd be on the curb next to Joe Lieberman.

And there were real card carrying Stalinist Line toting Communists in the Democrat party.  Do not let the McCarthy BS fool you.  They were Communists, and they wanted to overthrow the US.  A lot of the older ones still openly exist on the Iron Range.  Their kids and their ideological brethren have infiltrated the Education Industry and the "Charitable" Foundations.

There is some fine living there, caviar and champagne.  None of the hard scrabble commie organizing like their grand-parents.  Life is good, but they still believe capitalism is evil, and they will overtrow it when the time is right.

What we are witnessing is a tipping point where Obama has become so saturated in the public's mind as a fraud.  This is both interesting and at the same time dangerous for a republic whose current president has set his own treble hook of self-beclownment.

The new and growing wisdom  now running up and down the spectrum inside and outside of the MSM and our beloved new media is that Obama is an intellectual hollogram but a very real person flawed with a severe pathological ethos.

When the public begins to mock the very one who whose glass house is also built on a floating slab, the failure is gonna be magnified.

Everyone is now hip to the behind the scenes construction of a hollogram that's flickering like a 15 watt bulb.

They nailed the final result in 08. You don't like their poll now because it shows Romney losing. Well, Romney is losing in many national polls (PPP, Reuters, IBD/TIPP to name some), and trails in the RCP average.

Posted by: RomneylosesOhio at October 20, 2012 09:10 PM (luJ3e)

Sure thing, asshole. The accuracy of IBD/TIPP was truly "spectacular" in 2008:

Overall Score: 66%
Grade: D
Accuracy: 77%
Consistency: 34%

http://tinyurl.com/9lndj2u

If history is any guide, IBD/TIPP (and those other pollsters you mentioned) will surely adjust their samples to something more reasonable than the ridiculous Democrat oversamples and Independent undersamples they're using now when they complete their final polls before the election. This way they can pretend they are always accurate.

BTW, dumbass, trailing by 0.1% is laughable considering there is a little thing called margin of error. God are you an effin' idiot.

Posted by: RomneylosesOhio at October 20, 2012 08:56 PM (F9Eu1)

That's not necessarily true two-plus weeks before an election, dipshit. The only reason Obama's even up by the statistically insignificant 0.1% in the RCP average is because three of the polls included in that average are assuming a Democrat advantage this year that exceeds what they had in the wave election of 2008. Puh-lease. Using those assumptions, they shouldn't even bother doing polls because they are pretty much determining their findings before they even collect their data.

This is why RCP should do a meta-analysis with the different polls (i.e., combine the data into one giant poll) instead of simply doing the averages. Usually there would not be much difference between the two but with some of the polls showing such absurd party splits in their data, a meta-analysis would even it all out. They could then report the results from their meta-analysis according to a series of different turnout models using different D/R/I splits. I could do it but, although this may be hard to believe, I actually do have a life away from this site ... unlike that pile of crap RomneylosesOhio/Greg.

The candidates are heading to Iowa and Nevada now.

One caveat, Romney could royally screw up on Monday and let Obama back into this. But that is very unlikely. If Monday is equal to last Tuesday, then this election is over.

Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 20, 2012 09:30 PM (dX4hn)

Romney won't fuck up. With Romney you don't get the highs and lows like you get with Obama. He is steady, calm, and focused. He doesn't get off his game. Look back at the past year, whenever the candidate of the moment ran out to a lead, Romney kept on his gameplan. He never did panic, didn't run around changing his strategy, he kept calm and followed his plan. He is doing that now, and that is why he doesn't get rattled. He has already game planned whatever comes up, so when it does, he already has a plan to deal with it.

In short, he will do what he did last week, and in the debate before that.

However, they don't have anything like that.  What they had was the 47% tape, but they had to play it early.  If they had anything else they would have used it in early October.  They went with Big Bird instead.

I actually hope they try something like Romney counseling someone not to get an abortion.  Romney is still a little weak with evangelicals, and that will improve his support.

Let's not rehash all this.  Joe Paterno was a great man who made a mistake as a 72 year old football coach.  He was not indicted by a grand jury because he did what was legally required of him- but he didn't follow up when the people who should have acted on it didn't.  The argument could be made in hindsight that he should have done more, and I can understand, and I, frankly agree.  But that does not negate all the good the man did for Penn State football and for the thousands of kids that came through his program.   I was there.  Again, criticize him for his failure to act, but he is not the equivalent of Sandusky.

IIRC, the DWI thing tightened up the race a bit and probably cost Bush II the popular vote. The corruption scandal with Bush I, quite frankly, I don't really remember it being that big of a deal, but back then you had Perot running on an anti-government vibe, so it probably got a lot of the votes that could have gone to Bush in 92. Funny thing about that was corruption was what finally got rid of the Dems control of the House 2 years later.

438 I'm willing to concede California, Maryland, DC, Delaware, Illinois, and Vermont to Obama. Nothing else. I wouldn't spend money in Rhode Island, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it fall to Romney. The rest of Maine, economy is really bad and there isn't a minority base to support Obama's turnout. Connecticut is looking competitive, Barry is going to have to spend some money there and Mittens can ride on local dollars. I've seen some ugly NY polls, and I wouldn't put it past Cuomo to jack with the ground game to ensure his path is clear in 2016. NJ elected Christie, why not. Western WA and OR are thick with Mormons, I don't think the pollsters have any idea what the turnout will look like, especially if it is over and the coast just packs it in. Then there is HI, can Lingle pull it out? Notice I didn't even have to discuss any states in the heartland, the midwest, or the south!

The pollsters have to adjust their samples to fit reality at some point because the inaccurate sampling could be problematic for the country if Obama loses. The cries from Obama's supporters about the election being stolen from the first black President, followed by riots in various cities across the country would not be pretty. I definitely think there will be some civil unrest if Obama loses, but it will be even worse if the polls are still skewed on Election Day and Obama's supporters believe that he was cheated out of the victory (and have various polls "proving" their complaint).

The DCCC has already pulled money out of PA 6, 7 and 8, which are all congressional districts in the collar counties surrounding Philly.  Does that sound like things are going well for the Dems in PA?

477 463 someone mentioned Walsh's October Surprise against HW Bush in 1992. If I remember right, Bush had caught up with Clinton prior to Weinburger indictment. I think it definitely hurt Bush on election day.

Posted by: tofer732 at October 20, 2012 09:52 PM (m5Iwq)

Yep. I remember Bush pulling to within 1 point of Clinton in some polls the final week of the '92 campaign but then came Lawrence Walsh' October Surprise and the rally was over. I don't know if Bush would've won, but that made it virtually impossible for him to win as his momentum stopped immediately.

BTW, did you know that Lawrence Walsh is still alive? He's 100 years old.

Posted by: elizabethe loves a brownie at October 20, 2012 09:53 PM (p6h9x) Dyngus Day is the Monday after Easter, when the men throw buckets of water on women. The kids get nerf water guns and spray the heck out of passersby-I guess it's burning off the energy of eating all the foods you have fasted from during Lent, and then gorged on during Easter dinner, and many hours in church. It's okay when Easter is late, and warm, but if it's early-say March or early April, it's vicious-the temps will still be in the 30's and 40's. Getting splashed with water then is rather chilly.

I spent ten years on active duty all over the south. I will happily eat lutefisk cold before I eat grits or collard greens.

I'm a Northerner, but I developed a liking for grits when I lived in the South. Can't find them up here unless you go to grocery stores in black neighborhoods. Lately, I've been making a breakfast recipe I came across in the WSJ a few months ago. It's a recipe from a LA chef whose parents are Korean. At first reading, it sounded quite weird to me, but hell, I'll try anything once - cook quick-cooking (but not instant) oatmeal on the stove for a minute, toss in a few ounces of soft tofu, 1 raw egg, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the egg is cooked than add Sriracha chili sauce to taste. (I don't add a lot, but you need some because the oatmeal, tofu and egg are so bland). It's good and extremely filling because of all the protein. If you have it for breakfast, you're practically good til dinner.

I thought they were talking about some variety of round peanut you couldn't get up North. Boiled peanuts are one Southern specialty I don't like. The texture puts me off.

Greens are great, but be careful. I once had greens as a side at "Hogs on the Hill" in DC and found a garden slug in them. I nearly puked, but the manager was very nice - the barbeque was on the house and I got a couple of 50% off coupons as well. Never ordered their greens again though.
