Pre-ONT Movie Review and Open Thread
— Guest Blogger

Vince Mancini reviews Les Miserables to the tune of Smash Mouth's All Star.

HEY now, youÂ’re a French dude, kill some French dudes, sing, GAAAAY

HEY now, ValjeanÂ’s there now, lifeÂ’s unfair now, get, SLAAAAAIN

And ALL those PEOP-LE are DEEEE-heeeeee-yeeeeead, Jackman in the SEW-er, saved Eddie RedÂ…

Funny stuff.

I've seen the Broadway show twice and can't wait to see the movie.

What?

Don't judge me.

And no you most certainly can not see my man card. There's guns and killin' and explosions 'n' stuff, so this one skates by on a technicality.

I made him walk out. I got so sick of the communist theme to the songs, and the rise up against the man crap, when the man oppressing them was the Robespierrian mob. We will go see the movie because my kid wants to go, but I won't enjoy it. Give me Oklahoma! Think of Andy Roon's voice as you read this.

Newsweek is dead.  Actually it's been dead a long time.  It's been more of a NewsZombie as it losts it's soul long ago.  Now that a stake has been driven thru that newsrag can we look forward to Time Magazombie going the same way?

Has Arby's ever sold a sandwich that looks like the ones piled high with roast beef shown on the menu board?

Anybody notice malls are relatively uncrowded for this time of year.  Hell, even Walmart isn't crowded.  Maybe I'm the only one who waited till the last minute to shop.

Has there ever been any male successful in news media that had a more annoying voice than Andy Rooney had?

105 "BLAZING SADDLES" certainly does count as a musical, and was briefly considered for the stage.

The bar scene with Madeline Kahn singing "I'm Tired" is a musical triumph.

Yeah, but different era. That was a time when dudes had to pretend to like musicals. It was a law, or something. I'm a huge Cagney fan. He's one of my all time faves, if not #1. But, YDD, like Footlight Parade and all that stuff does nothing for me. The only one that's borderline ok is "Love Me or Leave Me". Because Cagney plays a no good, gimp rapist.

184 I've seen Les Mis a couple times in NY. I will not pay to see or hear Anne Hathaway screech out one of the best songs ever. That movie trailer with her "singing" should be enough to convince most to just stay away from the thing. Nails on a chalkboard and all that.

Posted by: laddy at December 24, 2012 04:14 AM (QmNJC)

185 I saw Les Mis once, on a trip to New York.  I really liked it - don't remember anything about socialism, I just recall Javert vs. Valjean as a sort of contest between non-Christian way of life (rigid, lifeless obedience to law) and the Christian way (love is the fulfilment of the law).  But my one main impression of the whole show was this: I always thought that all the talk about "Broadway" was hyperbole.  But when you see a show like that, you realize that it's not just hype; there's a level of professionalism and talent there that really does lift theater a notch - or several notches - above what you'll find in smaller towns.  I'll bet the Metropolitan Opera is stunning too - wish I'd had a chance to experience it.
