26 evening all 13- I spent big money buying expensive seats for Les Mis when it came to the Bass Theater in Fort Worth-hubby had just come home from Iraq, and he had enjoyed the musical pre-me. I made him walk out. I got so sick of the communist theme to the songs, and the rise up against the man crap, when the man oppressing them was the Robespierrian mob. We will go see the movie because my kid wants to go, but I won't enjoy it. Give me Oklahoma! (Full Disclosure-I played Laurie in productions in Athens, so I may be a tad biased to that particular show.)

Went down to Union Station in downtown LA today and picked up the dadster, he took the amtrak up. It's such a cool building but, ew, ick, once you go back where the tracks are, it's kinda skeevy. And lots of people trying to hustle a few bucks. Real fuckin' festive, I hope I didn't catch anything.

This is not my most Christmas-y Christmas. In fact, it is my least so. I blame Obama. Really, I'm not just saying that this one time.

Yeah, but different era. That was a time when dudes had to pretend to like musicals. It was a law, or something. I'm a huge Cagney fan. He's one of my all time faves, if not #1. But, YDD, like Footlight Parade and all that stuff does nothing for me. The only one that's borderline ok is "Love Me or Leave Me". Because Cagney plays a no good, gimp rapist.

I really liked it - don't remember anything about socialism, I just recall Javert vs. Valjean as a sort of contest between non-Christian way of life (rigid, lifeless obedience to law) and the Christian way (love is the fulfilment of the law). But my one main impression of the whole show was this: I always thought that all the talk about "Broadway" was hyperbole. But when you see a show like that, you realize that it's not just hype; there's a level of professionalism and talent there that really does lift theater a notch - or several notches - above what you'll find in smaller towns. I'll bet the Metropolitan Opera is stunning too - wish I'd had a chance to experience it.
