For your drinking pleasure I offer the recipe for "The Bacon Ceasar".

Smirnoff Red Label Vodka and Mott's Clamato Juice, seasoned wiht steak spice, bacon bits, Tobasco and Worcesthie. Garnished with a slice (or 2) of crispy bacon and a lime wedge in a bacon salt rimmed glass.

And since I am 2500 miles and 2 time zones away from home: hell yeah!

250

NDH/others, a question.

Could be way off here.  Cannot help but think logically (yes, this is comically futile in today's America).

But why "common core"?  How did schools produce much better outcomes, with far less in resources (adjusted dollars per pupil), before MA's in Education were even heard of?  How did many of us get such a good (public) education eons before anything like "common core" was imagined?  Why - why - is there any need for a "common" anything?  When there wasn't before - aside from common basic content (all that K-12 is meant for) and universal/simple concepts about learning how to think and communicate?

Of all the self-inflicted damage, idiocy, lawlessness, rent-seeking, authoritarianism, ignorance, bigotry, and repugnant sentiment that constitute most of today's public policy in America today, the idea that somehow something "new" is needed in basic education stands out as perhaps the most offensively ridiculous.

What am I missing?

I live 2 hours south of Tulsa. There are 3-4 nice bedroom communities in The Tulsa suburbs.

Eastern OK is called "green country" because we have trees and grass and rolling hills in  this part of the state. Anything west of I-35 is mostly dust and flat land.I've lived in western OK as well, no insult intended.

There are daywalkers that live in Tulsa, can add better detail. If you decide to head this way, you won't regret it. If you want more details, let me know.

324 Just got back from seeing the movie Divergent, which is based on the novel by Veronica Roth. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but WOW is this a Conservative movie. Society is run, by all appearances decently well, by a group dedicated to the values of humility and charity (Christians?). A rival group, made up of intellectuals, is waging a propaganda campaign against them claiming they are greedy and are working to throw society into chaos (Progressives?) Any failing by an individual in the humility and charity group is cast as representative of the whole by the intellecuals. The protagonist is from the humility and charity group but feels constrained and leaves them to join another group that she feels is a better match for her, the warriors. However, she still values where she comes from and what they stand for. Needless to say, leftest film critics hate all this and are slagging the film and the author for it. There is a lot more but I should head for bed and not give away too much of the plot. I'll simply say that I enjoyed the movie and plan to read the book to see how the source material compares.

Thanks all for your replies re common core.  I already knew/suspected/guessed that a lot of vile motives (indoctrination) lay behind the whole thing.  Should have phrased my question differently.

What is the *ostensible*, advertised reason for common core, and how does anyone at any level not get hooted/laughed down for suggesting that content/methods that took us from a semi-literate country to the moon somehow - magically I guess - simply can't be used to make today's American kids literate and numerate?

A Union Army officer who graduated the 8th grade (big stuff in 1863) and the Hungarian immigrant physicist who helped invent the Bomb in 1943 and the late 1970s tech boom engineer ALL learned to read and do basic arithmetic the same way (basically).  As do the kids in China and the kids of refugees in apartment buildings in Baku today.

To quote PJ O'Rourke, WTF?  I mean, WTFF?

330 NDH, My mother left me outside in cartridge for a few minutes when I was a baby. A cat jumped on it & though I don't remember anything, animals always went after me.There was my mother, her best friend & her three kids, me & my younger brother Paul walking to either park or grocery store. Big mad dog jumped from a house on street & pinned me down. A total stranger in a green car rescued dog off me. Paul might remember which neighbor was with us, one down the street moved away at approximately same time one next door neighbor with three kids about same ages as we were moved in. Dogs always went after me. A big black dog , while I was terrified of them, put his paws on my tiny shoulders when I was going to or/from Sunday school. Another time one ripped my Bruins hat off my head in winter. A next door neighbor got a puppy & I always thought my Father wanted the kitten, but it was my Mother that told one one of my much older cousins that they would bring me & have me pick out kitten to take home. I never knew that until my cousin Marie told me it was Mother, not my Father. She wanted me to be fearless & I am now except for things in house.

It took her at least 20 minutes during which she cried and yelled and told us "I'm bad at math! My brain doesn't work this way!" Plus the right to wrong ratio was 50/50. On the right is the paper I asked her to do. It took her 3 minutes and the only one wrong was the last one where she had to carry the one. No crying, no yelling, just blew through it. Notice the difference in the two papers. I can't imagine why she was so frustrated and getting them wrong.

If it's what they were doing in the vaunted St. John's County school system with my boy when he was in elementary, they're trying to teach shortcuts without teaching them the foundational methods first. They didn't really seem to give a shit that the whole fucking class hadn't learned their multiplication tables. Why? Because they weren't really teaching that. Took me a summer of teaching him the old ways to get him mathematically functional. Sadly, getting him to that level got him placed in AP math the next year. 370 I'm surprised, usually with all the slamming of Common Core we usually get one or two apologists for how all these problems aren't actually the fault of Common Core. Posted by: buzzion at March 30, 2014 12:30 AM (LI48c) Most of the problems are with the incompetent materials, incompetent teaching techniques, and incompetent teachers. There was probably a good amount of material which at one point might have made sense, but has been so incompetently handled as to scratch out any possible benefit. It's like the "new math." There is sound logic behind the techniques, but the incompetence just made it worse.

371 173 Common Core strikes again. This isn't just bad, it's unacceptable in every way. The print is tiny, but try to read it if you can. http://t.co/OiVQ6VR8Ux Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at March 29, 2014 11:53 PM (DmNpO) The frightening thing about this is that, as far as I've ever heard, when schools adapt new learning materials or textbooks, there is a committee that reviews the materials that are being considered. So it is likely that a number of people probably went over that material. In addition, all of the people at the publishing company, from textbook authors to editors.

389 I see that the defenders of Common Core (and we have them here, too) say that these are all local interpretations of the guidelines. So when there is a bad example brought to light, "local". It's not that I personally suffer through the media indoctrination shitstorm, because I don't feed them, but that so many proles ARE infected with their crap.

So yeah, I agree with the poster above that suggests that we designed the atomic bomb and went to the moon on not much more than a slide ruler and carry the one math, but now our kids and grandkids must find 'the friendly numbers' or get points off even with a correct answer.

393 Well, to pick up the pace a little, here's another dead guy, Richard Newell, aka King Biscuit Boy. doing a song that's NOT House of Blue Lights, despite what the Youtube title says. The band with him is one of the editions of Crowbar, fronted by Kelly Jay, the guy playing piano here. The sax player, Sonny del Rio, is from Hamilton, Ontario, as was Biscuit, and he once worked in the Studebaker plant there.

Crowbar had a gig at the hotel in Canmore, Alberta, many years ago, and I drove out there in my '63 Studebaker Wagonaire, which was my daily driver back then. On a break between sets, Sonny took it for a spin around the town, and told me, "You know, it was probably me that put the dome light in your car." Still have it, too.

399 "The opposite, in fact. They're making it needlessly complicated and confusing with extra steps. Extra points at which a mistake could be made." That's what I noticed with my kid. He was making 8-10 relatively simple calculations on a problem that should have taken like 4. They were trying to teach him how to break down numbers to more manageable parts so that theoretically he could perform faster. The issue is that that doesn't always work with every problem. So instead of developing his math ability by teaching him a traditional technique and then teaching shortcuts with the intent of getting him to the point of identifying which method is more efficient, they had him breaking down relatively easy 2-3 digit multiplication problems into these giant addition exercises.

And I was pissed at the teachers for wanting me to show my work. I got the right answer WTF do you care how I got it? Then came Algebra and geometry. And because I never understood the reasons my earlier answers were right I was fucked. I eventually learned how to do algebra and geometry but trying to skip the basics earlier slowed me way down later.

415 "Common core, at least as far as math is concerned, seems more like a way to teach them to memorize rather than teaching how to calculate."

Some of basic mathematics _is_ memorization, and nothing more.

Times tables, for example.

Beyond that, this is more rancid crap from the "professionalization" of grade school education. There once was a time when the typical person teaching elementary school had, at best, a high school degree, and perhaps not even that. Yet such teachers all across America did a good job with that modest foundation. By today's standards, a superb job.

However, it isn't possible to justify fat paychecks and pensions with that level of training. So education became "profesionalized" and "scientific", and curricula came to be designed by people with doctorates in education. Education itself. A field which previously had not existed, and for which no need had been apparent. (Other than the justification of the fat paychecks and pensions.)

Allow me to commend to the attention of parents with young pupils the excellent Singapore Math materials. From a country which routinely tops the international league tables in mathematics attainment, from early primary school on through university level.

Answer is 44. The way my daughter was being taught was with sticks and circles. Say, circles = 10 and sticks = 1. So she would draw 3 circles and 2 sticks for 32 and then 1 circle and 2 sticks for 12. Then she has to add the sticks and circles. 2 sticks and 2 sticks is 4. 3 circles and 1 circle is 4 circles which equals 40. Extra, pointless steps where more mistakes can be made. I don't know if you saw it, but I linked to a picture of the result upthread.

434 The goal of Common Core is simple. Make the kids learn their math this way so that when the standardized testing is done, the kids take too long to do the test and don't finish. They fail, school gets put on probation, eduction pros decide that more teachers are needed and smaller classes, so classes are downsized, more teachers hired, more dues to NEA, more political contributions to Dems.

442 "How are our CA morons after the quakes?"

What's alarming is that these are wussy little quakes.

Some bottles fell over and smashed! Oh noes!

Much worse is in store, and California is not ready.

Far be it from me to speak well of L.A., but actually, L.A. did make some needed building code reforms after Northridge in '94. It's just that this has not gone far enough. Enforcing tough new code on the new-builds and retrofits is not sufficient. A whole lot of the building stock does not fall into either category.

And, individual level preparedness is terrible. Both in SoCal and in NorCal. I keep walking into people's kitchens and pulling open cupboards to assess how long they can self-sustain. Typically not very long at all.

Also: you have got to love people who live in quake country and have an electric can opener with no manual fallback. Have fun opening that can of Campbell's with a dull paring knife.

443 A skill that is atrophying in me is writing longhand. Really, the only time I use it any more is writing checks, which I do very rarely. One or two per year; I pay shit online.

So when faced with writing longhand one thousand, two hundred ninety-three and 96/100 I'm likely to screw it up the first time.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at March 30, 2014 01:11 AM (DmNpO) One of the many reasons why I refused to live in Duval County. Like I told my wife, there's always a screw up. Books don't show up till two weeks into the school year. The company that provides 85% of the buses and drivers for the county? Yeah, most of their drivers are legally proscribed from being bus drivers. It's always something. Not to mention the quality of the education and the overall bureaucracy is just poor. The principal for the school my wife worked at skirted the line in the hiring process. She asked my wife what the grade of the school my wife worked at in MD was. "We were an A school. We were also the Autism and ESOL center for Prince George's County." "Â…Â…..oh." "Why? What is your school?" "Oh. WellÂ….we're a B school." Which was true. At that exact moment. Those were the previous year's scores and the current year resulted in the school receiving a D. And the becoming a "takeover" school. Heh. My wife through monitors out of her room on several occasions.

476 The common core method likely works fo people that picture things in their head. Kinda like some people are learn more easily through aural vs visual.

When we had to do 3D orthographic projections in drafting class. I could see it in my head and found that part easy, others in my class struggled with that part of drafting class. But they usually had some other skill that I was lacking in. Point being Common core is trying to teach things that come to some intuitively and for those that don't see it it is fucking them.

DDR, if I remember right, Kim Mitchell used to front a band called Max Webster.

Here is a band that was known as The Collectors, back in the '70s, when i was a young Peon growing up in Vancouver. They reinvented themselves as "Chilliwack" (a city about 70 miles east of Vancouver, almost touching now, heh), and hit the big time. I always loved this song. Nice dynamics between loud and soft, and tasty guitar, too:

Back in the Nineties, I would come across people on the right who were absolutely rock solid convinced that Bill Clinton was a Soviet agent of influence. And, to be fair, there was some evidence which leaned that way.

I used to laugh and say, "Oops. Too little, too late, comrades!"

Because while I never thought much of Clinton, I did basically just figure him for a greasily corrupt horndog with a smooth line of patter.

In retrospect, though, I do at times wonder.

I bought a somewhat similar one early this week and was so impressed with it (except for the tuners, which weren't responsive enough for my taste) that I decided to return it and buy one of the next series up scale from it rather than pay for new Grover or Schaller tuners to be put on it.

568 "In retrospect, give me back the last 6 years and put BJ at the helm. As long as we're going back and all."

I keep saying: Democrats just *love* to pull Clinton nostalgia strings. So, Republicans should go them one better.

The GOP control the House, and the House controls the purse.

So have the House send a budget over to the Senate which contains just as much money, corrected for inflation and corrected for population growth, as Bill Clinton had to work with. (Which is a LOT less money than Obama has been getting.)

And shove it right in Obama's face. "Clinton managed to produce a strong economy and vibrant job growth with this amount of money. What is the matter with you that you can't do the same? Are you not as smart as Clinton?"

For the Narcissist in Chief, those sorts of comparisons really sting. Infinite egotism will brood and brood over the tiniest of slights.

Okay, now let's get down close to where that Malaysian passenger jet drank the big gulp. Yep, I'm talking about Australia.

The Masters Apprentices Wars or hands of times

A song in the form of a letter from an Aussie GI to his sweetheart back home.

If that one is a bit to intellectual for you, these guys got one right up your, uh, driveway

The Masters Apprentices Undecided

640 Conservative Crank, My neck has been acting up for over a month. It's time for me to go see neck pain doctor for injections. I tried to make an appt a few months ago, with it being a nasty winter, I wanted one in a few days & couldn't get one. He left Newton Wellesley Hospital Spine Clinic & would do injections in Pain Clinic or vice versa. I received two letters shortly after that. He's gone to his own practice & left hospital. I am calling to make appointment tomorrow. I took two Valium's last night & night before to knock me out & they didn't work. I do not think I slept at all tonight. Living I with chronic pain sucks! Meds used to do trick but I have been taking same for almost 15 years. Valium is only muscle relaxer I could take in 1999 without side effects. Others made me see double or in bad mood, I tried all available at the time. When is your baby due?

Carol, sorry about your neck.  Valium is a hell of a relaxant, if 10 mg isn't doing the trick then you need to change your approach.   Have you seen a DO who does manipulation?  Thearapeutic massage?

Baby is due June 11?  We're not sure of the exact date because different ultrasounds have given us different targets.  Mrs. Crank is thinking she's going to go early, so we'll see.

Y-not, prayers.  I went though that with Mrs. Crank's father before we got engaged--got his permission to wed on his deathbed.  According to her, I've passed the "getting through sh*t" test several times over.

666 Conservative Crank I took two 10 mg Valiums ,so it was 20 mg. the pain I'm having now is mostly nerve pain.you are a doctor & should know there aren't many meds that work on nerve pain. I took 25 mg of Elavil for 3+ years. I hated that pill. It made me too thirsty, eye & throat were burning. I started cutting it in half after a year. I had surgery to relieve hand pain & coordination in November 2004. As a unexpected bonus it got rid of nerve pain. I hope June comes soon. It's been a very long, cold, snowy winter. What is a DO? I tried acupuncture in 1999 for several months. Then nerve pain began & the cost wasn't worth it. I had given Anne sone hosta plants because I was removing everything but roses. Anne was acupuncturist & called me a year or so later. I asked her about nerve damage & pain & she told me that it was a long process & she didn't think it would help. I'm glad she was honest about it. You are having a boy, correct?

668 Four a.m. I wake, know it's early, roll over to go back to sleep, when... A huge coyote howl goes up. We have woods or river on three sides, hear them all the time. Maybe out was just the quiet of the hour, but they sounded closer than I've ever heard them, sounded like a whole lot of them, and a really lot (rough estimates) of pups. Went on for quite a while. Naturally, when Defender Dog woke to the ruckus, he began running around the house barking. Even pawed at the door, which he usually never does. From bed, I just told him what a good dog he is. Don't usually encourage the barking, but I'm glad to let the coyotes know he's here. Dog finally settled back on his bed, but kept barking with practically every breath, until it became a quiet little arf, then finally stopped. Good dog. So, if the coyotes are thriving, I'm wondering if maybe I ought to start thinking about maybe arming up. What do you think? I'm not speaking metaphorically. But I could be.

Carol, DO = Doctor of Osteopathy, the other type of medicine doctors from MD.  Part of their curriculum (which is one thing that I would have wished to go to a DO school for) is they learn skeletal manipulation, which is the sort of stuff that chiropractors do, except they are also real doctors and aren't going to tell you that aligning your spine will cure your cancer or other such bullsh*t.

20 mg of Valium is insane.  I suppose it might be OK with long, long term use and under management by a pain specialist, but I'd slap one of my ER patients for suggesting I give them a dose like that.

Yes, it will be a Son of Crank.

VIA, you have no idea.  Eternity is 10 minutes before shift change when the horribly unstable patient gets wheeled through the front door and needs the doc right the f*ck now, because then I get stuck 2 hours past the end of my shift stabilizing him and trying to get him admitted/transferred/explaining to the family why he didn't make it.

Then, 10 mins before shift is over, another blistering 2 hrs punctuated by "nothing else we can/could do". 684 Crank, If there was a way to do it privately, I would paste pain doctor's website here. He is pain specialist. He uses the MRI to decide where to inject me in my neck. He does two injections in same disc two weeks apart. It really helped with deep inside pain in late 2010. I was able to stop being able to tell time by the last time I took painkiller. My left shoulder started as a twinge in one muscle & escalated to hurting so much I couldn't lift left arm without horrible pain. I asked him about it & he picked up my arm & said that there is nothing wrong with it or my shoulder, pain was from my neck. He told me he'd be able to see what to do for it before I left after having second injection. I believe he said C7 from left side of my neck. That lasted from January 2011 until December of 2013. His specialty is neck & back pain. He's very good.

I do recommend upper cervical adjustment (if you need it) as done by Dr Brooks in Tulsa. Simple, gentle, effective, and, once it "takes," permanently effective, or at least it was for our many family members who have been to him. Mrs Webworker had this (NUCCA) recommended to her by her med pro sister ("nurse" doesn't quite cover it). Went first to a quack who was trained by Brooks (we later discover) but "Christ" revealed to him a better way... thank Christ that jerk did no lasting damage to her. After that, we found the real deal. A lifetime of migraines (the Mrs's; I had other probs) eradicated forever convinced me. Carol: NUCCA - it's the sound Curly the Stooge made while doing that thing with his fingers. It's a specific, specialized type of chiropracty, much despised by many regular chiro docs because it actually works, and m/l permanently, which makes the regular chiros and their next-appointment industry look even worse than their already poor reputation. Involves the gentle (hardly feel it) re-seating of the Atlas bone, the "free-floating" top vertabra that holds up the head, to a position where it is not pressing on the spinal cord. A tiny action with a universe of relief. If you needed it. I should put all this on a web page so I can just say, look here. Sorry for the lecture length. Take all recommendations at your own risk; I am not worth suing.

He is one of 49 governors who should, at a minimum, be permanently disqualified from running for president. Or anything else.

Make that 48. I'd love to see the gov. of Idaho in the White House, just to see his name on the official stationery....

692 I sure do find myself cringing in anticipation of blowback on med thoughts. (Good I didn't bring up homeopathy, eh?) 706 Well, Carol, maybe it's not for you. I like to try what doesn't involve surgery and drugs first, if possible. Then, if it doesn't work, no great loss. Brooks says, he just wishes folks would come see me before they go on fir surgery; sometimes after, he can't undo the damage. Tried to get Mom in to Brooks. years ago after she had a blow to the head and developed typical symptoms of Atlas mis-alignment. Instead of just going to find out first, she had a vertebrae snipped in the spanking new spinal surgery hospital with the bestest spinal surgeons. Did not a damn thing for her, but no money back guarantees with the butchers and drug peddlers unless you get litigious, of course. Mom listened to the "smart" kids who dissed Brooks without researching him. The same ones who voted twice for O'tyranny. Pain free beats pain management.

719 I never did learn that olde wisdom about give advice only when asked. Nor the Chinese adage about not giving advice because you'll be responsible for the outcome if they take it. There's the flip side, remaining quiet when you might have just the clue someone needed to hear. Knowledge behooves us to transmit it if It might be worthwhile, if we are inspired to live a life of service to our fellows. Seems there has to be a balance somewhere in between. Probably would require wisdom and graciousness, two qualities of which I've never been accused of having an overabundance.
