— Gabriel Malor G'morning from sunny California! I don't have anything like the thoughtful book threads that Monty does, but I spotted this interesting piece in the Financial Times this morning and it seems to be right up our alley:
Show me the money
By John Lanchester
The author of a bestseller on the economic crisis asks why the literary world is wary of finance[...]
You can assemble an entire canon of the greatest English language poets from men who had lengthy professional careers in the world of money and administration, from Geoffrey Chaucer (customs) to Edmund Spenser (government and administration) to John Milton (ditto) all the way through to TS Eliot (banking and publishing) and Stevens – and this entire pantheon barely touches on the world of work and money. If it seems unreasonable to expect poets to write about practical matters, well, it can be done: bear in mind that Virgil’s Georgics had the explicit ambition of being a guide to farming, as well as an account of the pastoral year – an ambition picked up by Ted Hughes in Moortown Diary poems.
The gap in the canon of fiction is even more conspicuous. Novels, as Iris Murdoch once observed, “are full of stuff”. She meant stuff as in things, objects, places, but also in the sense of information, events, coming and going. The “stuff” in novels touches on every aspect of the world and people’s lives. That’s what makes it so remarkable just how little there is in the novel about the world of money. Take Jane Austen. Her work is astonishingly fresh in almost every respect, and its psychological insights are as applicable to the early 21st century as they were to the early 19th. Part of what is so bracingly contemporary about her is her complete lack of self-deception about the importance of money to her characters’ lives, especially their love lives. But there’s nothing about money in and of itself; nothing about how this central aspect of the world actually works.
It's long, but worth the read.

And as far as books, I should finish "The Forgotten Man" shortly as I wait for some Bach discs so I can more fully enjoy "Godel, Escher Bach" per the advice of a fellow moron. Isn't there an old line about gentlemen never talking about money?
Anyway, yeah, money seems to come up obliquely, like in The Great Gatsby. The characters have it, but you never see it being used.
Some movies deal with money on a "higher level"-- I'm thinking of Wall Street, and of course, the Oscar-worthy classic Weekend at Bernie's, whose plot is set into motion by the protagonists finding evidence of embezzlement (though their boss, Bernie, convinces them that they've found a huge mistake that'll make their careers, and then hires a hitman to kill them).
But, um, books, yeah. Word-tomes. Textvolumes. I got nothing, so instead I'll threadjack a bit and point out that there's been a shift since, like, the Victorian era that crime in fiction was almost solely the province the the lower classes, whereas now, most villains are Filthy Rich. I think part of that is due to the Sherlock Holmes stories, which often featured upperclass-types commiting crimes.
(Since this is a pseudo-book thread, I figure I have license to be pseudo-coherent.)

"The Andrians were the first of the islanders to refuse Themisticles' demand for money; he had it put to them that they would be unable to avoid paying because the Athenians had the support of two powerful deities, one called Persuasion and the other Compulsion, and the Andrians had replied that Athens was lucky to have two such useful gods, who were obviously responsible for her wealth and greatnes; unfortunately, however, they themselves, in their small and inadequate land, had two utterly useless deities, who refused to leave the island and insisted on staying; and their names were Poverty and Inability. With the support of these, no money would be forthcoming; for however strong Athens was, she could never turn Andros' 'can't' into 'can'...."
Just change 'Athens' and 'Themisticles' to 'Democrats' and 'Obama', replace 'Andrians' with 'American Taxpayers' to get our present day situation. Talk about history repeating itself....

The problem is that you can do everything right and still get ass raped by cronied up markets. At least, that is the case lately. Little investors routinely get killed. Safe investments pay next to nothing. There is no market anymore, it is all rigged by the big boys.
Posted by: navybrat at March 04, 2012 10:22 AM (XWDcH)
I just skimmed the guys article but I disagree with him.
He misses the point that money is situational and there have been hundreds of novels written on how one aspect of how money worked in a given situation.
There is no hard and fast rule for how money works, it changes with markets, government and innovation in the financail world. How it works can change with what the price of gasoline or real estate happens to be. How money works for a hedgfund or a venture capitalist is far different from how it works for a bond trader or a long term investor.
It would be a very long book that tried to capture the different ways money works.

That gave me a good snicker. But as for interesting fiction about finance, I can recommend a series of murder mysteries by Emma Lathen. They have a Wall Street banker as a detective, and I learned more about finance reading them than in either of my two miserable semesters of economics. Overall, I'd look at her older books from the 60s and 70s, the latest ones just seem to lack the humor and consistency of the earlier decades.
Sarah Hoyt also has a post today that touches a bit on the publishing industry's aristocratic dislike of corporations: http://accordingtohoyt.com/2012/03/04/eeeeeeeeevil/

Possible thread winner. Distinction needs to be made between "money" and "currency", as they are not the same. Not by a long shot.
Money keeps its value. That's why they call it money.
Currency, on the other hand, exists solely to fluctuate.

A large capacity, USB flash drive might be OK, but they're pretty "losable." I use 'em but not for serious backup.
You might consider the product line from IOSafe which comes in many different sized capacities and price points. They're very tough and can take considerable abuse. I know they have USB versions; they probably have eSATA for the higher-priced models but that's also probably overkill.
Your decision is going to depend on capacity and interface more than anything. Don't consider price too much. If it's worth backing up, it's worth having a reliable one.

Along these lines (not for backup, but for front-end) I've been using a liveCD (on USB - with persistence, to actually make it useful and functional) for my main system for some time now. I am very, very happy with it and wouldn't trade it for anything. Best major change in my computer arrangements in years. I wouldn't go back to a hard-drive installed system if you paid me.

Two separate issues: They were definitely head-hunting HOF Kurt (of whom I was a major fan; he might be my favorite of all time for various reasons) just like they did Favre the next game; but he would've gone anyway. I think the Saints were dumb to get caught on this but imo they're far from the only team that did this and the league was clueless not to know this was going on.

I think you'll like it. UNetBootin is an easy way to try some stuff out. The only LiveCD setups really worth using have persistence, so that only allows for a couple of Linux distributions. Otherwise the LiveCD is more of a dead system (like the original Knoppix stuff). Fun, but fairly useless other than for rescue and such. For real customization of the distribution you'd have to roll your own LiveCD but that's pretty easy to do.

That's nice - and pretty much the same way I stumbled onto LiveCD and actually started using them - but you can get a persistent setup and keep the whole environment on the USB which makes you fully transportable, then. I think Puppy works with persistence, but I'm not sure.

The only reason a company would advertise anywhere is that the advertisement works. Conservative media sells products like no other kind of advertising. Thats why most markets have two conservative talk stations and music radio is evaporating.
Those companies who don't advertise with conservative media because they don't want blowback if they ever stab the consumer of these programs in the face with a dagger of political spite will simply miss out on the benefit of supporting media which sells.
Oh-fucking-well, there's Adam Smith's pimp hand smacking down the Dodo bird again

So just curious Lesbian Segull, how long have you worked for Carbonite? I mean I must assume you work for them, because no one else would attempt to make a point this inane in a vain attempt to stem the tide of all of the business Carbonite is losing over this debacle.
Carbonite's CEO came out and made a very political statement about the whole affair, basically stating that he would no longer advertise on Rush because Rush called some left wing loon a slut - only after this left wing loon went before Congress and proudly proclaimed she was a slut.
On the flip side, this hypocritical piece of shit has no problem advertising one Ed Schultz, who called conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham a slut, even though Laura has never stood up before congress and proclaimed that she was a slut. Rush apologized, Ed never has and never will.
In short, Carbonites CEO is a fucking hypocrite.
So what we have here is a huge double standard, and frankly if Carbonite is still in business this time this year, I'll be very surprised. As it is I would never, ever do business with a company like this and I'd be surprised if anyone else would either.
So if you do work for Carbonite run into your CEO's office, and explain to this worthless pansy fucktard that if he wants any hope whatsoever of saving your company from bankruptcy, he'd better issue one huge fucking apology very quickly for his hypocrisy.
Otherwise, If I were you'd I'd brush up your resume and sell all your Carbonite stock. Kapesh?

Taking 2 of the league's worst franchises to 3 Super Bowls is reason enough to put him into the HOF on the first ballot imo. Plus I think he still holds the top 3 SB passing yards records.

I rarely catch Limbaugh, but that would be a bit of a marketing coup particularly if it was a small, up-n-coming online backup company. Could you imagine the advertising boost and word-of-mouth it would bring if Rush played it up just the tiniest bit? A molehill could become a mountain.
Plus, the company could joke around with it a bit. Ask, "Do you want your backup handled Liberally? Of course you don't. You want it safe, no risk, in conservative hands. Reliable. Affordable. And alRight."
Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at March 04, 2012 12:04 PM (eHIJJ)
Ok, first.. you might notice this isn't the Rush Limbaugh show.. or the Rush Limbaugh Blog, or in any way shape or form associated with Rush Limbaugh whatsoever. Maybe if your upset with Rush you can go take it up with him, rather than us.
Second, if you were really a "Dittohead", or a republican, or even somewhat conservative, you'd realize that none of this has anything to do with reproductive rights whatsoever. That's a lame smokescreen used by libertards that only a complete and total idiot would buy into. So I think we can safely say your not a Rush fan, your certainly not a republican or a conservative. Nice try, but no cigar.

For sure, but a persistent setup allows you to store state information on the USB, too. Ubuntu uses a "casper" system (which I have not really been able to find much real documentation on) for its persistence. It does this either by allocating a file (which an ext2 file system resides on) which holds your new data or it looks for another partition on the USB (or anywhere) called "casper-rw" (which you can customize easily, though no one tells you). This allows you to modify your desktop, add packages as usual, save stuff, etc. and it all stays as part of your LiveCD/USB setup. No ned for any hard drive anywhere. That's how my main set-up is. 100% USB.

I recall many, many years ago that a certain restaurant business dropped its advertising on Limbaugh due to pressure from the usual suspects. As a response, Rush actually encouraged his listeners to patronize said business and give them the reason why. As a result, they resumed their advertising on his show.
This time around, though, the Ed Schitz advertising hypocrisy is a factor.

I see where your coming from, and I'm not normally a huge fan of boycotts either, but in this case my thought process is, fuck carbonite.
If they were standing on the moral principle that they would not advertise with anyone that made statements like "Slut" on the air, ok great - I could see that. I may not agree with it, but I could see there point and I'd move on.
But they are not, this is a two-faced, hypocritcal standard. Apparently Carbonite thinks if you call a liberal a slut, that's wrong and they'll pull their advertising, even if you apologize for it. But if you call a conservative a slut, then thats fine.No repercussions there.
Truth is they are taking a lot of angry phone calls from the looney left - people who don't subscribe to their service, and they caved under the pressure. They really should have thought a moment about that fact that it's not these non-subscribers that keep them in business, it's the people that actually pay them for service that they should have concerned themselves with.
Obviously any company that is run in such a slipshod, idiotic fashion is not one I'd care to do business with, and certainly not someone I would trust with my most valuable data.
I think maybe if the CEO pulls his head out of his ass, apologizes quickly and maybe even considers stepping down then they might be able to save themselves for Chapter 11.
Otherwise I'd give 2 to 1 odds that Carbonite goes belly up - within the next couple of years. Just my 2 cents worth of course.

Off-site backup exists for a reason. Not everybody needs it but if you do you need it very much. (I always regarded the lack of offsite backup in Terminator as a huge plot hole.)
Think about those place hit by tornadoes recently. Myself, I live in an earthquake zone. Protecting critical data goes beyond drive failure. It also involves issues like losing the entire building where the data is located. If your business can be wiped out by data loss, you really need to consider off-site backup. At the very least, burn DVDs monthly and put in someplace like a safe deposit box in a bank.
There are plenty of options out there. We're a Mozy reseller at my main job.
