Publishers Porning Up Public Domain Works
— Gabriel Malor

Inevitable, wasn't it? First you put Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy up against zombies. Then you start to think wouldn't it sell more books if they just boned a lot?

Clandestine Classics is making all the implied sex in such classics as Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice and, yes, Sherlock Holmes explicit.

The publisher touts: “The old-fashioned pleasantries and timidity have all been stripped away, quite literally. You didn’t really think that these much-loved characters only held hands and pecked cheeks, did you? Come with us as we embark on a breathtaking experience — behind the closed bedroom doors of our favorite, most-beloved British characters. Learn what Sherlock really thought of Watson, what Mr. Darcy really wanted to do to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and unveil the sexy escapades of Mr. Rochester and Jane Eyre. We’ll show you the scenes that you always wanted to see but were never allowed.”

The company is releasing reworked versions of five classic novels as ebooks on July 30: Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet, Northanger Abbey and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (who knew that needed to be sexed up?).

Honestly, that's what Kindle is good for. You can read all the trash you want, pretty much wherever you want, and nobody will ever know. And, yes, I'm guilty too.

On a serious critical note, an interesting relationship is the one between Charles Ryder and Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited.  Are they ghey for each other?  Just bromosexual platonic best friends?  Waugh quite deliberately makes it vague and open to interpretation, and even the TV miniseries adheres to the ambiguity.

215 NORRISTOWN — Former Montgomery County Commissioner James R. Matthews was accepted Tuesday into a supervisory program for first-time offenders that could eventually clear his criminal record stemming from a charge of false swearing to a grand jury.

Matthews, a Republican who served as a county commissioner from 2000 to 2012, was also placed on probation and ordered to pay court costs and make a mandatory donation to an area charity.

A grand jury spent 18 months investigating allegations Matthews used campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses, steered county contracts to friends and conducted county business in secrecy. Matthews was arrested in December 2011, but the most serious charges against him were dismissed last year by a judge.

Chester County Senior Judge Ronald C. Nagle granted a motion Tuesday that places Matthews on probation for one year and enrolls him into the ARD program. Matthews was also ordered to pay costs of prosecution and make a $12,000 donation to the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, a nonprofit corporation aimed at helping students gain a greater appreciation of the principles of a free and democratic society.

Assuming he complies with all the conditions of the order, including successfully completing the terms of the Montgomery CountyÂ’s Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, MatthewsÂ’ record will be expunged after one year, according to Judge Nagle, who was brought in to preside over the case to avoid any conflict with judges presiding in Montgomery County.

Matthews, 62, a one-time rising star in county and state politics, is the brother of Chris Matthews, host of “Hardball” on MSNBC.

221 Hell, why stop at literature? Dig up a bunch of old black-and-white pictures and splice in some porno scenes whenever the camera pans to the fireplace or window. It'll be like the "missing" sex-scene reel gag in Planet Terror, but with immovable, lopsided tits and real money-shots. Maybe we can enlist Ted Turner to finance the project; he can finally colorize all those classic films in the process. Still, why stop there? Reprint old Marvel comic books with the characters redrawn naked. Doodle boobs on Sue Storm's chest! Paste Playboy centerfolds into issues of Highlights! How my ass taste, Goofus and Gallant! Christ, the singularity is near, but it has nothing to do with cybernetics. My theory is that all popular culture will eventually collapse into one lurid mash-up of postmodern tackiness.

258 Considering the sources, let’s file this week’s big Marvel’s The Avengers news under “Alleged” and cross-reference it with “Yeah, but there’s probably more”. The New York Post reported Monday, based on a rumor that the Sun published, that Scarlett Johansson is about to become the highest-paid actress on the planet for her role as Black Widow in the Avengers sequel.

The curvy superstar is set to pocket a record-breaking $20 million to reprise her comic-book heroine role in an “Avengers” sequel, according to a published report yesterday.

Her Black Widow was such a hit, “Avengers” producers are willing to break the bank, Britain’s Sun reported.

The most ridiculous thing about all of the reports of this rumor is the reminder that Angelina Jolie got $19 million for The Tourist to become the highest paid actress in Hollywood. THE TOURIST! Good lord, that movie was a diaper left in a Florida car.

Since we're talking about Chick-Fil-A, as we should, let me just say how much I love the one by work.  Last week I stopped in at lunch and I got there just as a group of 6th-7th grade boys who apparently were a golf team got there.  They were polite but still, herd of teenage boys.  The manager took one look at this and very politely asked them to let the nice young lady go first so she could get back to work.  Further ways I can tell I'm down South now, the response of the kids was not "fuck you" but was "Oh!  We're sorry ma'am, can we help you with anything?"

314 Shit. I do not want this guy: pbolyard Rob Portman: GREEN POLICE ALERT!. His bill to reduce greenhouse gasses & force energy efficiency is a hot mess! http://t.co/cMkYjT9o "Shaheen-Portman Energy Efficiency Bill Will Save Consumers $60 Billion, Help Businesses Create 159,000 Jobs Bipartisan legislation would also cut emissions by equivalent of 21 million cars, according to new study (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – A new study has calculated that bipartisan energy-efficiency legislation from U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) could save consumers $60 billion by 2030, help businesses add 159,000 jobs to the economy and cut carbon-dioxide emissions by the equivalent of taking 21 million cars off the road. The study released today by economists and policy experts at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) says homeowners and businesses will see a 3-to-1 return on investments made possible by Shaheen and Portman’s Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (S. 1000), which would establish an energy efficiency strategy to increase the use of existing energy efficiency technologies in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors of our economy. The bill passed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in September with strong bipartisan support by a vote of 18 to 3."

Got a sick kitten being kept isolated but he is being such an angel.  Curled up sleeping and not trying to sample my lunch.

318 @276: Yeah, but if you aren't endorsing gays as superior life forms that's "bashing" now.  Funny watching that yardstick get ratcheted.

Man, I always come in late to the best threads.

I can think of at least one book where you wouldn't have to change the title - Charles Kingsley's Westward Ho!

Hmmm. I'm trying to find a literary agent, for real, to represent my contemporary novel. Feels like I missed the trend. Sexed up 19th century storylines are in!

Maybe I should just send a polite note, on a nice piece of parchment, featuring flowered up language and pleasantries, all but basically asking "Would you like to have sex with me in exchange for helping me get my book published?"

Just tell the agent that your book IS a sexed up 19th century classic.  You think the guy has read that stuff?

333 But seriously, how different is this from the websites that show Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty feeling each other up while Belle and Snow White have a little scissor time?  Just search "Disney cartoon porn," and get ready for your jaw to hit the floor.
