Immortal image from MSNBC on the night of October 3rd.
Before the debates, people were saying "Debates don't matter." There's a reason for that -- they usually don't. In most debates, while someone is acknowledged as a "winner," it's really a close thing. I agreed with this guy on this, with the other guy on that. I liked this line, it made me laugh. This guy made a good point here.
It's a very even thing. Someone "wins," but, you know, barely.
So that's why it doesn't change numbers.
Now, obviously, that was not what happened in the October 3rd debate. The October 3rd debate was a demolition, or, as Jay Mohr called it, a "curbstomp."
The successive debates were like the usual sort of "debate." Someone "won," as usual, but without actually making an impression or impact.
The game was played over four quarters. Romney ran up the score 35-0 in the first quarter. The remaining quarters were (arguably) 7-6 in slight favor of Obama. (I actually think Romney and Ryan won all of them on substance.)
Overall, the game was still a decisive loss for Obama.
One thing that's been annoying me is the reaction by liberals. They understood -- they knew -- Obama got his head handed to him in the first debate. And they also realized, then, that Obama had to be said to have done the same to Romney in successive debates.
That's why you've seen this furious spinning from liberals that Obama (and even Biden!) somehow "destroyed" Romney and Ryan and later debates.
They knew they were destroyed by that debate; they were furiously trying to gin up the meme that Obama had done the same in return to Romney.
But no one believed that, not even they themselves. They understood the following debates were like the usual "Debates don't matter" situation; someone arguably came out ahead on debate points, but no one really "won" in any genuine way.
Even worse, they failed to understand that Romney and Ryan were winning the debates on the grounds they actually fought on. Understanding that they were actually ahead (or soon would be) based on the October 3 debate, their strategy from that point out was to reassure voters who were already beginning to incline towards them, to offer confirmation that their October 3rd hunch was correct.
They did just that.
Obama, on the other hand, hand a much steeper hill to climb: He had to attempt to prove that Romney's first performance was some kind of wild fluke, and that he was unqualified for office, no matter what that first debate suggested.
He failed at that. That's why he's continued to lose ground.
There's an interesting structure to this campaign that I think I'm the first to explicitly mention. It occurs to me just now.
It had been argued, previously, that Romney wanted a "Referendum" election, and Obama wanted a "Choice" election.
Romney wanted a straight referendum on Obama's performance, whereas Obama wanted people to only consider the contest in terms of Obama vs. Romney.
Obama's ad strategy -- a year of demonizing Romney -- was aimed at disqualifying Romney. And it was mostly successful -- after all, just before the debates, Obama had something like a four or five point national lead.
Obama's negative campaign actually changed the structure of the race so that it wasn't a Referendum on Obama, but in fact a Referendum on Romney-- and Romney was losing that Referendum until Oct. 3rd.
The October 3rd debate changed that. Suddenly, Romney was a perfectly reasonable, perfectly acceptable candidate, and so it became either a Referendum on Obama, which he loses, or a Choice between Romney and Obama, which Obama also loses.
Obama never had anything else but that negative campaign on Romney. Now that that's gone, he's reduced to Binders Full of Birth Control and Romnesia and a silly Big Picture children's book called "Obama's New Agenda for a 2nd Term."
In a way, Obama might have been hurt a bit by his Negative Ad blitz working too well for a while, encouraging him to rely on nothing but that.
At any rate. Obama lost the debates. This was obvious to any fair viewer, whether conservative, moderate, liberal, Republican, Independent, or Democrat.
I'm glad that the absurd spin over that fact will finally stop.

First debate....Barky looked like a sullen child who hadn't studied.
Second debate....He brought a cheat sheet and he was the Teacher's Pet.
Third debate.....Barky was full of petty snark and looked even smaller than before.
Romney, on the other hand, was the same even-tempered grown-up...in each debate.
It's heartening to see that enough people out there saw what was really going on.

"I'm nervous, don't like the polls being so close."
I'm nervous too. Especially when I hear people confidently talk about this election like it's in the bag for Romney. I've heard talk like that before and it's sometimes been a disaster.
Senator Al Franken was once thought by those of us on the right to be a laughable implausibility. We got cocky and let down our guard. Then, thanks to a bunch of felons and illegal aliens and corpses voting, and some very aggressive liberal lawyering during a recount, Senator Al Franken became a horrible reality.
Just as a second term for Obama could become a horrible reality.

I still love me some Rick Perry but I thank God Romney was the victor.
****
Perry could never have managed Obama and the debates the way Romney has.
Romney is one helluva leader.

I don't. It'll hide out for two or three days then show up denying that it ever said Romney was going to lose, just like it did with the Walker recall.

Or, as the hags at the View put it:
Before these debates, the general impression of Romney was that he wasn't too smart, and that he was very stiff, and that if he happened to be elected president, it would be a disaster. Now, you know, I don't give my opinions here. What you have after these three debates is that people feel, whether they want to vote for him or not, that this is a qualified man, this is an intelligent man, and this is a man who we now don't describe as stiff and totally out of touch. What is the most important thing for Romney is that he's a different person seen by the public now than he was before the three debates.
People - especially women - got to see him and he was an affable Clark Kent type, a sort of likable professional, who was capable, serious, well spoken, and on the job.
The fact that President Obama was so totally unprepared and coming down from a coke binge just made the contrast stronger.

The reason the debates mattered this time is because usually the most articulate candidate with the most to say is perceived to be the best candidate who is winning the campaign. This then carries over into the debates where they win there as well and, thus, the debates don't really matter, they just reaffirmed everyone's perception on the race.
But this time the person who had been perceived to be the best candidate with the most to say wasn't even close to being that because of how badly the media was spinning for Obama. So when the debates occurred, it finally brought the perception back in line with reality, and people realized that the better candidate was Romney. That's why the debates mattered this time, they broke through everyone's incorrect perceptions of Obama and of Romney.

"Obama's negative campaign actually changed the structure of the race so that it wasn't a Referendum on Obama, but in fact a Referendum on Romney-- and Romney was losing that Referendum until Oct. 3rd.
The October 3rd debate changed that. Suddenly, Romney was a perfectly reasonable, perfectly acceptable candidate, and so it became either a Referendum on Obama, which he loses, or a Choice between Romney and Obama, which Obama also loses."
Maybe it just remained a Referendum on Romney, but instead of losing he started winning. This is giving me a headache.

My thinking lately has been that Mittens knew Barky was going to go negative all the way, so Mittens decided to conduct his campaign in such a way as to appeal to those who already were inclined towards him, and wait for the debates.
He had to know the obvious slant of the media. He had to know about the negative ads, and he hd to know he'd bankrupt his resources running useless countring ads in the swing states. So he waited, gritted his teeth, picked a very competent running mate and waited for those debates.
When the debates came along, he had one chance: knock Barky down and rough him up, in public an before an unedited, unfiltered audience. And that is what he did. The man started and ran a financial powerhouse, ran a state under less than ideal conditions and saved an Olympics, for Heaven's sake...he knows about strategy, timing and how to win. He won't cheat but out- thinking and out-maneuvering someone is fair game.
Southside Chocolate Messiah is getting his dirty tricks clock cleaned by Donny Osmond due to one, just one public appearance, which cost a fraction of what even one counter negative ad buy would have cost.
Romney beat Chi-town Hayzoos at political gamesmanship, and will most likely win going away. He let it become a Mitt referendum and then won that and made it into the Barky referendum he wanted all along.
There were stumbles and I was for more blood-letting along the way, but dead is dead politically speaking, and Hayzoos without his teleprompter and trappings is just a thin, over-rated race-baiting demagogue.
And Mittens has proved it with just skilled counter-punching.
Well played Mister Clean Politician Guy, well played.

I would like for everyone to wear RED on Tuesday November 6th. You can't wear anything political, but this is like the secret moron hand signal at the FEMA camps. A sea of red voting. Red for conservative states in the USA. Tired of being part of a red fiscal cliff. Seeing RED in anger at the current administration.
How can we get this to go viral---for conservatives to wear Red on election day? Are y'all with me?
I will be the aging supermodel in the red sweater crawling over broken glass to vote Romney/Ryan here in Floriduh. I could vote early but want to wait until the day.
P.S. Have you seen the Clint Eastwood ad yet? My husband swears that is me in line behind the guy at .04 seconds. It is said that everyone has a doppelganger. I think I found mine in this ad. He says she has "that" look I have when I am in airports checking for terrorists (we travel a lot and I am always on alert to swing my purse and get a reward from the FBI for that one guy who is worth five million). I have asked him to send the ad to his liberal family to flip them out that I am now hanging out with Clint Eastwood in Romney ads. They are so stupid they will believe it...and they also know, in addition to my being a red Republican conservative that I am a redneck, so it would not surprise them that I somehow did this.

I have been watching Romney closely. He is a skillful tactician who has dominated Obama; lived in Obama's head rent free. Kept his powder dry while Obama annoyed everyone with his stupid ads and his fawning press; both with approval ratings in the 40's. Romney's taking this in a walk. He has been showing us that is Obama an empty suit; always was and always will be.
John McCain was beaten by a mirage.

The final debate was the closer for Romney. He left Obama scratching and scraping to win a debate while he serenely proceeded to winning votes. It is as if he had planned the series of debates to set his opponent up to focus on the wrong thing each time.
After mixing it up in #2 Romney sat back and waited for Obama to bring a pile of rehearsed attacks then sat there with a "golly, you sure say the strangest things sometimes" grin on his face and watched the guy talk himself out of a job.
If you're debating to see who should be in charge of the military and your opponent is making snarky comments illustrated with zoomy hand motions about airplanes and submarines, you win.

Some top campaign staff have been floating the story that Clinton advised them to drop the "waffler, flip-flopper" angle and tie Romney to his own declared "severe conservative" positions from the primary. Of course, Obama, having already beaten the vaunted Clinton Machine in 2008, would not have been swayed if unconvinced.
But that is irrelevant. The problem always was the same: they were going to go all-in over-the-top from the start, using exaggerations and outright lies, no matter which tack they took. And Romney was always going to get his chance at unfiltered time in the debates.
So the old adage applies: "If you set out to kill the King, kill the King." Because any rational observer could see that Romney is so much better qualified to be a leader, he had to be crushed to the point Obama could safely avoid debates.

RE: Jeep/China. I'm in Toledo-Home of Jeep. When I and others posted that story... instantly we were bashed by some Union bozo's who were convinced WE had made it up. I point out to them that if Crysler would have gone through a normal bancruptcy instead of a forced sale to Fiat. Jeep would likely be a stand alone Brand, Headquartered right here and that the Union could have been MAJOR stockholders. They could OWN their own future...too late.
