Rasmussen: Romney 48, Obama 44

Both FoxNews and Rasmussen have been very disappointing this cycle -- for rightwing make-it-up wingnut polling operations, they sure have had Obama ahead an awful lot.

Well, FoxNews showed Romney's 2nd-ever lead on Obama yesterday, and Rasmussen shows now a Romney lead too.

(Both Fox and Rasmussen have lower figures for Obama's Job Approval than anyone else, though.)

I haven't been mentioning polls, because 1, this is an atypical period (bruising primary, no rallying effect yet) and 2, it's so far off and 3, they've been bad for Team Red.

I'm mentioning these two because lately the meme has spread like wildfire, even among Republicans, that Obama is going to win in a walk.

Um, what?

Either these people are crazy or I'm crazy. I don't think I'm crazy, so I'm going to say "them." But I do not see how you preside over the worst recession since the depression -- four grueling years of spirit-crushing joblessness -- and say "Let's have more of that!" and then win an election in a walk.

I just do not see how that is possible.

I thought 2000 would be close because even though Gore was a bit of dickbag, the economy had been good previously. It was close.

I thought 2004 would be close but we'd lose, because the economy wasn't booming and the public began showing signs of War Fatigue. It was close, but we won.

I thought we'd lose 2008, and not closely, because the economy was now in recession and we had a financial crisis and War Fatigue was now a majority complaint. We lost, and not closely.

I know "Campaigns matter," as political professionals are especially eager to tell you, and so do candidates, but basic underlying facts matter too.

The underlying facts of this election do not favor Obama. If they did, he'd be talking about them. But he's not. He's talking about everything else, but not The Question.

Reagan's question -- are you better off now than you were four years ago...? Obviously we're not, but he can't even offer a plausible Hypothetical Future Scenario where things are going to get better under his leadership.

And he'd better offer a really strong, very plausible Hypothetical Future Scenario. Because he offered a grand one up in 2008 and we're about as far from that as a monkey is from building a Saturn V.

He needs to answer The Question. He can't dodge it forever.

The public is giving him every last chance, but at some point, they're going to need reassurance and not just this ridiculous game of Winning the 24 Hour News Cycle.

Obama can win every news cycle from now until November 6th, but people will still vote against him if he can't answer the only question that matters.

21 I had a very disturbing FB conversation on my post about being glad Santorum had dropped out. The two sides were conservatives who, like me, were ready to support and vote for Romney. Honestly, we'd vote anyone but Obama. We were discussing our hopes for Veep when the other side showed up... Those conservatives who are claiming Romney won't win because he's Mormon and who aren't sure that they as Christians can vote for a Mormon. Some attention will have to be paid to that group, alleviate their worries, so they don't stay home in November.

It's probably going to be a close election. We have no way of really knowing how well Mitt's campaign will resonate or what degree his programming upgrades can mimic a likeable human being that people can relate to. It seems baffling that Obama even stands a chance, but then again it's equally baffling why his approval ratings aren't in the mid-30's.

Although I would have preferred a more conservative Republican to Romney, I see him playing well with independent voters. Obama is not going to be able to paint him as an extremist, an idiot, or being incompetent.

I Dubya can win two elections in this country, Romney should be able to win in a cakewalk with 8% unemployment and $4 gas.

I don't think the economy will have to get even worse for him to lose. If it remains stagnant, Obama is going to look weak. If it shows signs of improvement- even modest gains will be heralded by the MSM as 'booming'- Romney is going to have a tough time.

But yeah- incumbents have the advantage. For many people it's easier to vote for The Devil You Know (and who they voted for once already) than the one you don't.

85 It's a good poll for Romney. Anything at 48 or over is probably winning once those undecideds come around. However, Rasmussen's poll from April 10-13, 2008 showed McCain ahead of Obama 49/42. It's a different election, but we shouldn't be comfortable.

And the legacy Media will start painting roses on Obama right around June. They'll be a little critical now, so they can claim they're objective; the Media voters will believe it. I'm not sure that scenario will hold, but that's what I think folks are looking at when they say Obama will win.

Yes, but: unlike 2008, the 2012 election does not involve the unprecedented one-time historical event of electing the First Black President. The USA's been there, done that, got the t-shirt. If Obama were to contrive a rosy Hypothetical Future Scenario that his tried-&-true leadership will surely bring about if only American voters will grant him a second term: he would severely damage his already very difficult prospects for winning reelection.

Obama and his team know this. It's not just that he can't sell those tickets. It's that if he were to even try: Romney, the GOP at large, the Tea Party, and even the cast of Jersey Shore would ridicule him endlessly. And the whole nation would laugh because everybody would recognize the derision was in order.

Team Obama is pursuing the best strategy currently available: Obama is the compassionate populist protector of the weak; and Romney is the rich bad guy who will leave the little guy out in the cold to fend for himself.
- It ain't much. But it's all they've got.

Obama really only has a few hopes of pulling a second term out of his ass. From least likely to most likely:

1) The Romney campaign explodes in some unforeseeable way. His second and third wives finally step forward. Or those Super-8 movies shot in the 70's showing his passionate love for Disco are leaked. Etc.

2) Unbeknownst to the experts who poll and track such phenomena: the demographics of the country have finally crossed the Rubicon and it is all but impossible for a non-Nanny State Republican to win national election. The ranks of the Welfare State Takers combined with the ranks of Grievance Identity Politics Constituents have finally (and quite suddenly) swollen to such a size that their math can only rarely be overcome by facts and commonsense. That is essentially where Europe has been for decades.
Unfortunately, we too are heading in that direction. And while it is possible that we are already there, the 2010 elections indicate that it is very unlikely. And, as said, we would have expected Michael Barone or someone with his skill set and sagacity to have warned that the demographic micro-data are beginning to indicate that we might currently be on the cusp of such misfortune.

3) Some time in the next several months the economy shows unambiguous signs of robust growth.
Not: the numbers have gotten a little better than they currently are. - That would just indicate that the stink-ass economic "recovery" was just a little better than it was back in April.
No one's buying those tickets.
Obama needs something like: 4.8% average GDP where unemployment has fallen to at least 7.6% or less. And even then, he wouldn't be a lock.

But all bets would be off.

Would the American public believe that after four years of shit, that a few months of a pretty good economic data clearly moving in the right direction is worth giving Obama a second term? They just might.
Then again, they might not believe the numbers will hold. Or maybe they see the numbers, but they don't feel the recovery yet. (In part, that's what happened to Bush 41 against Clinton. Although, Perot was the larger factor.) Or Americans may have already made up their minds about this president, his performance, and the overall long-term shittiness of the economy. Even with the media cheerfully singing "Happy Days Are Here Again" based on unambiguously good economic numbers: the election could still go either way at that late hour.
Remember: Obama has a lot of other political liabilities slung around his neck. From scandals (Solyndra, Fast & Furious, GSA parties, etc.) to the hugely unpopular Obamacare to the harrowing Deficit/Debt Crisis to his all-but-naked politics of class-warfare divisiveness.

A pretty good economy starting to take shape a few months before the election might not cut it.

Anyway, there is currently no reason to believe that any of the above three scenarios is likely to play out for him. Though any of them could.

But if none of them do: it's bye-bye Obama, baby.
