Rasmussen Wisconsin: 49-49
— Ace

I don't know what data we need to get these guys to make a major play for this state.

Only 2% are undecided in this poll. I suppose that's something that suggests you don't necessarily bother with a lot of ads. But GOTV personnel can be moved there, maybe.

Romney/Ryan are now outspending (by a fair amount) the Democrats across battleground states.

This week alone, Republican groups are combining to spend $59 million across 13 states. Obama and two other Democratic groups are spending a comparatively paltry $36 million across 10 states. Collectively, the Republican side has spent $115 million more than the Democratic side — $539 million versus $424 million, according to sources watching the advertising market.

But the big advantages in ad spending are in states we're now sort of assuming Romney wins (Florida) or where we already knew he was fighting hard (Ohio).

Not in Wisconsin.

12 Check that:  GOTV personnel with CCW aplenty, or whatever legally works in that state as a backup.  Combat-pay per diems might also be a thoughtful touch.  The news coming out of WI about the physical well-being of R/R supporters gives one pause to say the least.

The thing about Ohio is that McCain lost by 205,000 votes out of ~7 million.
THREE Percent.

Ohio has sent out something like 800,000 ballots that represent around
ELEVEN Percent.

Because some people may not mail them in early and they have

69 I have another theory presuming there's no malice, in that the pollsters surmise that the election will be razor close like it was in 2000 and 2004, so they see any poll showing a clear Romney lead as an anomaly and reweigh it so it either shows him merely tied or within the margin of error. The consensus is that Romney could only squeak out a victory if he wins at all because well, SCIENCE!11!!! Horseshit I say.

130 This one seems so simple . . . 1. Call Sigonella. 2. Call Seventh Fleet OPS 3. Launch the AC-130 Spooky, 4. Load the Marines into the Sea Kings or Tilt Rotors 5. Launch the Marines, and the F-18's for BARCAP 6. Hose the down the neighborhood with the Spooky - even the VC were afraid of the Spooky. 7. Bring the Tilt Rotors in over the beach 8. Bring the Spooky back in for the extraction 9. Everybody goes home 10. The FA-18s blow the place up. The OP happens as soon as the Spooky is on station. If I can figure this out with a 20 year old battle plan - I would hope that the current crew can get this from Go to Feet Wet in 120 minutes given that Sigonella is 400nm from Benghazi . . . from a commenter at Blackfive. And he is right. This makes no sense unless we were trying to put toothpaste back in the tube. We were trying to arm Libyan and Syrian rebels and ended up arming Al Qaeda, who then killed us with what we gave them Maybe thats why Dempsey and Patraeus are giving the JEF cover

i THINK (ymmv) that what was going on in Libya was our people trying to get hold of weapons stocks left over from the fall of Qaddafi, and put them in to the hands of rebels in Syria. Of course, this is sort of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' thinking which backfires more often than not. The attack on the Benghazi consulate has the potential to blow the roof off the whole operation. Obama may find himself in an updated version of Iran/Contra here, and he doesn't want that, so they have to cover up.

As noted above R/R are paying attention to WI with visits and ads.  Heck with the VP candidate and head of RNC from WI and with a successful governor race recently they know what they are doing

#37 agree a bit.  If they start saying Ohio is Romney's O can't win and people stop paying attention.  I think it was Rove who this week said internals show R up a few in Ohio and that R would take Ohio

Polls are polls.  I'm using the anecdotal evidence - R going into more states, big crowds, O acting small and desperate, endorsements switching to R, etc as a better indicator.

#79 - good point.  With the cautious businessllike approach R has next week could be like a guy who's already reached his goal taking a few long-shots hoping for a jackpot but knowing his already set

I think Romney is doing a rope-a-dope in some of these states.

Dems are good at early voting, and organization in general and very sgrong in tradional northern union Blue states.

Maybe Romney thinks by tipping his hat too early, he will just mobilize their sleeping giants. Wait until the last week, and let momentum and a sup-duper-major ad blitz carry over an extra 2% to 3% and maybe steal a MI, WI, PA before the Dems realize what hit them.

In the meantime, use all resources to secure FL, VA, OH and CO.

Seems like the plan to me.

It sounds like total crap but when:

(a) your ambassador's requests for more security are not only denied but his security is downgraded, (b) there are more than 30 people in the building, (c) the operators on the ground are denied permission to assist the people in the building and even worse told to stand down, (d) there was a drone in the area and the whole thing was being observed, (e) the operators were denied support twice;

it starts to make you wonder if there's any basis in the conspiracy theory. And furthermore, this is how conspiracy theories take root: debacles combined with shoddy investigations combined with a refusal to engage in discussion about the debacle or the shoddy investigation.

171 Someone asked accuracy during recall. Marquette came first. They found it O+1 last week. Rasmussen, AngusReid and WPR had it tied for 2nd. I rmemeber the best and the worst. PPP's final was tied with WAA as the 2nd worst Lake has the absolute worst poll- EVEN, missing it by nearly 7 points. If Rasmussen, Marquette and Angus say its within a point, believe it. They did well on the recall. If Romney carries the state, he does it with a decisive win in GreenBay-Appleton; and shores up rural independents in the West and Central parts of the state. WOW certainly is important- banking more votes than Milwaukee margin wise. But to offset Dane you need to win the regions above.

178 I will say this: Even when the cover-up in Libya is this bad and should, understandably, cause disgust in the hearts of every American, the fact the Obama can still win (or make it very close) is a sad reflection of our electorate and the demographics problems facing the Republican party.

Romney's scheduled to have a big rally at the Wisconsin State Fair Park on Monday night, so he'll get a lot of free media in Wisconsin early next week, including probably all day attention from the local talk show hosts (Charlie Sykes and Mark Belling are the two biggies).   I expect that he'll start a big media push in the state after that.

Put Wisconsin in the bank.  The enthusiasm by Republicans in the state after the Walker recall election is sky high.   It's going to build over the next ten days.

197 It'll be close folks. There's a scenario in which it breaks 269-269. Mitt HAS to get Ohio or the best he can do is right at 270. That's still a win but we'll be up until noon on the 7th waiting for it. If you're in OH or know somebody in OH, vote or get that somebody to vote.

Romney is multi-tasking.   They know that as of now they've got FL, NC, VA, and CO in the bank.   That puts them at 257.   So Ohio would be the easiest route to 270, but they can also get there with any combination of any two remaining states, so long as one of them is Wisconsin:

Wisconsin-Iowa (10+6+257 = 273)

Wisconsin-Nevada (10+6+257 = 273)

Wisconsin-New Hampshire (10+4+257 = 271)

Or, they could just use the Regular Guy's plan, which is to win a whole shitload of states, including PA, MI, MN, OR, as well as all the swing states, and then we go to bed early after throwing back a river of top shelf Scotch.

Whoopee!

215 According to the National Journal, we're outspending the Dems by $3.3 million in Wisconsin, compared to our $5 million advantage in Florida and $4 million in Ohio.

I wouldn't say we're not fighting for Wisconsin.

Posted by: Clint at October 26, 2012 09:10 AM (IJDTs)

216 Don't stress, Ace.  Romney's always had a rope-a-dope strategy, because he knows the longer he waits to move the bigger his war chest advantage will be when he does.  I expect there will be massive ad buys in WI, MN, IA, NH next week, and probably MI, NV, and MI as well.

Meanwhile Benghazi is really blowing up.  It looks like Romney is putting Obama away this next week.

Posted by: TallDave at October 26, 2012 09:15 AM (/s1LA)

217 Wisconsin should be Plan B if Ohio doesn't work, forget expensive ventures like Pennsylvania or Michigan.

I think Ohio WILL go Romney, but when you have opposing billion dollar campaigns focus like a laser on a single state, anything can happen.  All the other national numbers look great for Romney, I think the popular vote is in the bag, but Ohio has been VERY stubborn in the polling.  I'm not sure any of them have actually shown a Romney lead ever (although I agree with people like Dave in FLA that the models oversample Democrats, but it's still worrisome)

If the polls are to be believed, Romney looks just as likely to win Wisconsin and he is Ohio, and the recent events there show Wisconsin has a conservative electorate that's energized and organized.

I just don't want Romney to make the mistake of putting all his eggs in one basket.  The thought of Romney winning the popular vote 53-47 but losing the Electoral College is a nightmare scenario of mine.

218 "Or, they could just use the Regular Guy's plan, which is to win a whole shitload of states, including PA, MI, MN, OR, as well as all the swing states, and then we go to bed early after throwing back a river of top shelf Scotch"

Well, Ras and Gallup now both see the electorate at about R+2, meaning Romney wins by about 5 considering his lead with indies, meaning he probably takes all the swing states and a couple Obama leaners like WA/OR.  If things break well next week, he might even take a couple states like CT that are considered safe for O, much the way O took IN in 2008.

Posted by: TallDave at October 26, 2012 09:19 AM (/s1LA)

219 BTW, isn't it about time for another O'Keefe video?  At this point I wouldn't be surprised if he has Obama trading national security secrets for coke.

Posted by: TallDave at October 26, 2012 09:21 AM (/s1LA)

220 According to folks in the know on Twitter, Obama has been forced to make a $1 million ad buy in Minnesota. The head fake has been successful. Remember, Romney has money to burn. Obama does not.

221 TFG has a TON of freakin' radio ads in Madison right now.  Not  a peep from Romney though.

Posted by: GMan at October 26, 2012 09:56 AM (sxq57)

222 Even people who are not undecided can be swayed. I would get behind a significant "Democrats for Romney" effort and at the same time work to expose the actions of this administration that we are seeing coming out today re: Libya and reinforce that with the hundreds of Mexicans killed through Fast and Furious. Point out the stalling, obstruction, "executive privilege" etc. I believe there are Democrats who could be swayed and the way to do that psychologically is to provide a "Democrats for Romney" movement that validates the notion that they can still be Democrats and vote for Romney in this election. What Obama has done is shameful, or should be for any American of any political stripe.

224 @209: none of those four states are "in the bank," except *maybe* NC. In FL we lead, but just barely. And VA and CO are pure tossups at this point.

Sorry, but Greg's right. We haven't led in any Wisconsin poll since August. As of right now, I want my money in the four states above, plus more competitive states like NV, IA, NH, OH. We're losing in the Electoral College - just barely, but we're losing. I agree with Romney's strategy - we've got to get to 269 electoral votes, and that's the most likely path to doing so. I don't want to screw around with pipe dreams like WI, MI, and PA. I don't care how much we're leading in national polls. I want a Romney win.
